MARI2006's SparkPeople Blog MARI2006's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Older and Heavier So, it's true. Your metabolism does slow down as you get older. I knew that. Every few years my weight creeps up and stays there most of the time. After returning to work full time early last year with a somewhat stressful job, of course, I have gained! Am I going to give up? No. Have I been singing this same song for years? Yep. Let me just say... I know for a fact that even though I struggle to reach or stay at my ideal weight, if I had given up all these years, I would be ten time... Sun, 14 Feb 2016 08:40:33 EST OFF TOPIC: Need advice! Son wants to move out. Some parents I have talked to said their child moved back in once they realized how expensive it was to live on their own. I have no problem with my son moving out. He's 24, graduated from college, started a fulltime job in February. My husband and I felt he should save more money, get his masters, then move (or at least save more $). He is a smart kid but I don't think he has thought this through. When he mentioned it to me, I was "careful" in my response which was... "sounds exciting..... Wed, 24 Jun 2015 06:45:44 EST I'm back! Wow.. it's been over a year is I've blogged. How is everyone? Did anyone reach their goals? Still struggling? I just updated my intro here at SP and yes I am still struggling with the 20+ lbs. I want to lose. I get so inspired by those that lose so much more - good for you all! :) I was just reading my last blog and not much has changed - just older! lol... Would you believe that home project (bedroom) is still not done?? We just finished priming the walls - now it needs to be paint... Sun, 7 Sep 2014 07:23:09 EST I failed! As mentioned in my previous post, I joined the Spark's Spring boot camp challenge last week and was not able to even finish week 1. Why? Well, life happens. I left the challenge (team) and plan to re-join and start again. I have been very active though. I actually took this week off to work on a home project that has been neglected for years. I could not stand it anymore. I actually don't know how other Moms do it while working full-time. They either have $ to pay someone to do such t... Fri, 3 May 2013 14:09:57 EST Spring may just show up tomorrow!! We've had a couple of nice weather days here in NY but it keeps going back to cold temperatures which is unusual for April. It was freezing this morning! Spring time usually gives me quite a boost when it comes to being active... spring cleaning... walking... doing all the right things cause no more coat wearings! Well, forecast starting tomorrow is 60s all week so I am looking forward to that and plan to walk walk and walk.

I started Spark's boot camp challenge just yesterday. ... Tue, 23 Apr 2013 17:15:27 EST Happy New Year! Happy New Year! ...and I'm sure many of you are saying... "here we go again..." lol... A new year is refreshing... a chance to reflect... and chance to start anew... set new goals... (or re-set them). Last i posted was in October 2012 asking about Ballroom dancing shoes. Due to the Sandy Storm, the wedding had to be postponed. The catering hall in New Jersey would not be ready for her wedding. Last I heard it would take place in April 2013. So much has happened... the storm.. the horri... Sun, 6 Jan 2013 09:10:50 EST Ballroom dancing Shoes!! help! ok... call me a dummy but i didn't know. I purposely bought ballroom dancing shoes because I heard they were very comfortable. I bought them for a wedding coming up in November. I just bought them yesterday. I now realized that these shoes should not be worn out in the street and should not get wet due to the suede sole on the bottom of the shoe. What if its raining? Perhaps i won't be walking on concrete that much -- from the car to the wedding ceremony. But this may mean i may have t... Sat, 13 Oct 2012 10:22:47 EST I am now a size 6! I can't believe it. No, I actually i do! I noticed my clothes feeling big so i got out some piles of size 6 jeans and they freakin fit! Not even tight! I am so excited! I still have some top muffin (bulge around the waist - sorry did i need to explain that? lol...) which hopefully will vanish as i continue to eat smart and stay active. I'm guessing if i lose this bulge i will get to a size 4 which is probably right for my body frame and i will finally have a sexier look.. a smaller wai... Sun, 7 Oct 2012 07:02:00 EST WW Lifetime member! Hello All, Last Saturday, 8/25/12 i became a weight watchers lifetime member! Very exciting! Although I've reached my goal weight, i would love to lose another 5 lbs or at least get that slim look where i can wear clingy clothes! No more muffin top! My muffin top has shrunk but still there. I've been walking/jogging and trying to be as active as i can.

Hope all are doing well. Will try and post more often. Be well. Spark! :) Thu, 30 Aug 2012 08:36:43 EST Wedding Anniversary Today is my wedding anniversary (28 years!) Got up this morning and my husband had already left this morning to go fishing. However, he left a beautiful bouquet of flowers and two cards in the kitchen for me! We have plans to go out to dinner at the restaurant where we had our wedding reception. I am looking forward to that. I am a really lucky gal. Sure it hasn't been all rosey these past 28 years. All relationships take work and can easily get on your nerves... lol... However, I am... Sat, 11 Aug 2012 08:13:18 EST weigh-in Saturday, 8/4 WW scale said i gained 1.2 lbs. which is no big deal unless i keep gaining right? The scale will go up and down... I imagine that once i start gaining muscle (hopefully soon), the scale will go up. The weather here in NY has been very humid. I did manage to get my 40 minute walk in today early this morning.

My walking buddy has been unavailable due to family obligations (her Mom's ill) so i do miss our daily walks together. I usually will go out on my own but this humidity la... Sun, 5 Aug 2012 17:31:16 EST Weigh-in I went in for my weekly weigh-in and actually lost another couple of lbs! Total loss to date: 14.6 Making a decision early on (and planning is key). For example, today i am going to a bbq. Therefore, light breakfast and lunch... and will choose wisely at the BBQ. I am actually bringing a spinach salad. I did buy a fruit custard pie which looks delicious and am sure has a lot of points but i know i will have a small portion. Enough to enjoy and not feel guilty about it.

... Sat, 28 Jul 2012 10:33:26 EST Reached my Goal! :) Last time I blogged was in February. Time sure does fly! I am happy to share with you that I reached my goal (about two weeks ago)... total loss of 12 lbs! I may go for another 5 lbs. I am ecstatic cause i was able to fit in my size 6 jeans and other clothing that would not fit before! People have noticed too! I can see it in my face and in some recent pics taken. woo hoo! When i started with weight watchers I did lose 10 lbs within a few months but it took awhile to actually lose ano... Thu, 26 Jul 2012 21:03:49 EST Trip to Puerto Rico - help! ok this is off-topic. I am planning a trip to PR for March (yes that's next month). The trip is really for my Dad. He wants to visit family. I need to do this now before it may become even more difficult for my Dad to walk. He uses a walker now. My sister and I are planning the trip. I haven't been there in many years. The plan is to book a decent hotel on the beach and not too far from the airport (Luis Muniz). We are hoping to have some beach time besides visiting relatives. We want ... Sun, 19 Feb 2012 16:15:44 EST Is it over yet?? lol... As you can seeee... haven't blogged for awhile... like the song says... "it's the most happiest time of the year..." yeah right... if you're drinking! I don't particularly enjoy this holiday but I try to focus in what exactly we are celebrating. The birth of our Savior! It's funny how we send cards out to people we hardly see. Yes, it's nice but geesh I would rather donate the cost of this card/stamp/time to a charity. I just haven't the guts to do it. I do have one relative that doe... Sat, 17 Dec 2011 10:12:02 EST Still back on track! Read me :) Yay! This is a quick blog entry. I overslept! Weigh-in last Saturday says I need another .8 (point 8) to reach my 5% goal and this is Thanksgiving week! Ugh! What to do? Decide and Commit! I will be good all week so I can enjoy Thanksgiving. In other words, save my WW extra points for that day. This does not mean all hell breaks lose on Turkey Day! Eat a good breakfast, light lunch, drink water before you have the meal, plan, portion, pick healthy as best you can. You'll enjoy the me... Mon, 21 Nov 2011 07:32:01 EST Back on track! All I needed was to lose .2 (yes, point 2 lbs) to reach my 5% goal. I was excited and what did I do? I errr started to celebrate! Celebrate by "not planning". soooo i gained about 3 lbs. Silly me!

I am back on track now. I have lost most of that weight gain. Now, I just need to lose 1 lb to reach my 5% goal. Total loss to date is 6 lbs. HELP! Okay, I am whining! I am lazy when it comes to weight loss, my motivation is out the window, and planning special meals just for me and meals for my family is exhausting! Who has the time?

I know I should plan some activity! Treadmill! hello! Lifting weights! hello! Do the Wii Fit! hello!

okay... on the positive: I only drink water, tea or coffee, glass of wine once in awhile. That will make me smile! 30 (My target goal is 120/125!) Right now my weight is 137.2 (total loss to date is 5.6 lbs). The weather is starting to get cold so I did not do much walking this past week; plus lots of overtime at work so i was and am exhausted!

I did walk with my Buddy, Michelle, to this morning's weigh-in though! Hope everyone is doing... Sat, 22 Oct 2011 11:01:07 EST Weigh-in Thurs, Oct. 13th - oh no! My buddy and I usually go on saturdays for the weigh-in/WW meetings but we couldn't this week so we went today. Did I want to? Nope, I knew I wasn't very good these past few days and was hoping that the next 3 days would help me salvage that. BUT I went anyway, and of course, I gained! :( Was not surprised but am disappointed. What to do? Well, move on... Just last week I reached a point (as mentioned in my previous blog) that I just needed .2 to reach my 5% goal. I guess you can say ... Thu, 13 Oct 2011 20:36:33 EST Weigh-in Oct. 8th - another .8 lbs! I really thought I lost a total of 1 lb this past week but the WW scale said .8 That's okay.. it's a loss! Total loss to date 6.8! I am just .2 lbs away from meeting my 5% goal! Yay!

I am doing good with portion control, not as active every day as I would like but I have been feeling ill with a cough, am eating my fruits, need to eat more veggies. Weigh-in was yesterday and I lost .8 ! I believe this is my 7th week. Planning to track my food, and watch my portions and of course plan activities (like walking)! I have to start losing a pound or more per week! Sun, 25 Sep 2011 20:10:24 EST weigh-in was Saturday, 9/17 - 6th week Gained 1 lb! :( WW leader happened to mentioned that you shouldn't have chinese food the day before a weigh-in cause all that salt adds up and it did! I had chinese food the night before (i was sick so we ordered in). Anyway, hope to lose it and more this week! :) Mon, 19 Sep 2011 21:48:32 EST WW - end of my 5th week hello all! Just ended my 5th week with Weight Watchers. I lost 1.6 lbs this past week. A total loss of 5.4 lbs so far. Although I believe I could have had a larger total number loss by now, I am not going to negate the fact that I am still losing! It's a lifestyle change, right? One day at a time! By having some "mindful goals" every day (water, fruit/vegs, food planning, walking!), it all goes well. I recently tried a low impact Zumba class near my home and I truly believe that if I ... Sun, 11 Sep 2011 13:08:42 EST WW 3rd week - a .2 loss! yes "point 2" lol Weigh-in 3rd week was last Sunday, 8/21. I wasn't sure if it was going to go a bit up or down. Sat, 27 Aug 2011 14:44:07 EST WW - 2nd week (3rd meeting) 1.6 lb loss! Weigh-in this past sunday at Weight Watchers and lost 1.6 lbs on my 2nd week. Up to a total loss of 3.6 lbs. I was hoping for a 2 lb loss on my 2nd week but I can't complain. I went out last thursday with hubby to celebrate our anniversary which meant I only had fruit for lunch. I enjoyed my anniversary meal - i actually decided to eat only half of it which was wise because i was satisfied with just half and did enjoy a glass of wine and dessert! I also did have the pasta but requested t... Wed, 17 Aug 2011 17:26:19 EST WW - 2nd meeting - lost 2 lbs in 4 days! hello fellow sparkers! As I mentioned earlier, I joined Weight Watchers last tuesday with my walking buddy. We decided that Sundays would be the best day to go to meetings instead of tuesdays, therefore, we went today. Our first weigh-in: I lost 2 lbs in 4 days! My buddy lost 1.8 lbs! I sincerely hope I can keep this mindset continuously. I am tracking, planning, and walking every day! I was hesitant to join again because I felt we could not afford it. However, my husband said to give it a go. He feels we can afford it for now (he recently retired). I believe the WW week starts on a Sunday? Monday?

Words of wisdom are appreciated! Thank you! Hope all of you are doing well in your journey! Sun, 31 Jul 2011 14:48:51 EST Nothing new... There's not much to say. I am enjoying the summer. I try to get some type of activity in but am eating what I shouldn't be eating and at times not stopping when I should stop eating! It's kinda sad that I have no discipline! Some days I do really well but it doesn't seem to last. It's like I tell myself.. oh well, I can start again tomorrow. Sun, 17 Jul 2011 16:10:45 EST Day 1 (again, again), actually Day 3 today! Well, i finally did it! I've almost reached my highest weight ever! No, I am not smiling. Last time I hit the 140s I was pregnant 20 years ago! Even my knees are starting to yell at me! Every year, my weight would go up and down... lately, up, up and up! No more fooling. I can't stay like this. Started walking three days ago (monday) for 30+ minutes and am watching my calories. Was at 143 on sunday. This morning's scale said 139.50! this is motivating! The weather in NY is finally... Wed, 27 Apr 2011 06:22:42 EST Day 1 (again) Since I am back to 140 lbs, I decided to start again. Therefore, today is Day 1. I did do the treadmill for 21 minutes and lifted some weights. I did not do so great with eating. I went to a birthday party (she's 90!) and did nibble on some chips and cake. It's almost as though I am two persons. I turn my back to the voice that says, "what are you doing??"

Sun, 27 Mar 2011 20:25:55 EST Day 11/12 Well, as you can see I didn't blog yesterday (Day 11). Little Karla slept over and she kept me busy. Very active, sweet little girl. Luckily her aunt supplied me with coloring books and some toys. She loved the "Polly Pocket" we picked up at the supermarket. She loved changing her clothes... within 3 hours, she changed her outfit 4 times! Luckily she only had a few outfits! lol... My son helped out by playing board games with her. That was very helpful and she enjoyed it!

T... Sun, 27 Mar 2011 07:34:10 EST Day 10 - Babysitting My son is almost 21 - an only child. Took her everywhere with me to day to do errands. She didn't mind. She even got me to buy her a toy! lol... We are finishing off lunch and will take her to the park for awhile.

No treadmill today. It's important I keep my eyes on her. She touches every... Fri, 25 Mar 2011 13:42:34 EST Day 9 - Treadmill Well, I woke up a little achy but had decided the night before to JUST DO IT! ...and I did! Got up early this morning, had my cup of coffee and did 21 minutes on the treadmill and was feeling more tired than normal. At least I did it! This morning's weigh-in was 140.50. I had cereal "smart start" with sliced bananas but ran out of skim milk so I did use regular milk. Had some leftover chinese food for lunch (sesame chicken, broccoli & brown rice), a banana, water. Of course, got home v... Thu, 24 Mar 2011 18:54:54 EST Day 8 - Not today! Not getting on the treadmill today, simply too achy! Will try and get in a nice walk later today. Slept alot too! Only 20 minutes again though. Got up early, had a cup of coffee, checked my emails, then hit the treadmill. Then showered, got dress, had cereal with skim milk and bananas and left to pick up my Dad to take him to his dr appt. Busy day.

I am starting to feel achy. Tue, 22 Mar 2011 21:58:14 EST Day 6 - Treadmill (and today is My Birthday!) Today is the 6th day that I have been consistently getting up a bit early to get on the treadmill for at least 20 minutes every morning. My goal is to keep this up and eventually mix it up with other stuff (like exercises CDs). In other words, make this a priority (me!) every morning!

Today is my birthday! Got myself a french manicure and pedicure, did a little shopping and eventually my husband and I will go to our special restaurant for dinner! I plan to order fish and perhap... Mon, 21 Mar 2011 16:42:46 EST Day 5 - Treadmill Sunday, March 20th -First Day of Spring! Yay! It is Day 5 of me going on the treadmill every morning. Did about 21 minutes but today I got on it after some breakfast. Perhaps that is why I did not run as fast? hmmm... Anyway, I do want to point out that besides the treadmill, I am constantly moving doing chores. I started spring cleaning yesterday... i must have gone up and down the basement stairs to take care of laundry, etc. about 20 times! Today, i walked a bit outside, then did th... Sun, 20 Mar 2011 19:54:54 EST Day 4 - Treadmill & Weights Saturday, Day 4 - Yes, I got on my treadmill again today - first thing this morning right after a cup of coffee! --Yay! I hope I can continue to be consistent! Did the treadmill for 21" and each day it shows that my distance has increased. I also lifted weights. I had the time so I made sure i did those today. If I get some muscle in my arms and my legs, it will help burn more calories steadily and quicker! My morning weigh-in was 137 which is a bit disappointing but I won't let that sto... Sat, 19 Mar 2011 16:22:31 EST Day 3 - Treadmill Got to admit. Once I made the decision last night... and all through the night that I was going to get on that treadmill no matter what, it was easier! I fell asleep late which meant I was not going to get enough sleep. Plus I knew I had to get in to work early. My treadmill commitment is now a priority! Since I didn't have time this a.m. to deelee dalee, I did not empty the dishwasher (which is my usual to do in the a.m.), just scrounge (sp?) my hair after my shower (no time to blow-dry... Fri, 18 Mar 2011 14:54:00 EST Day 2 evening - comment I plan to hit the treadmill again tomorrow morning. I really am enjoying doing the treadmill now that I own an Ipod Nano. Listening to fast, enjoyable music makes it fun and fast! I even downloaded a couple of audio books from my library's website for free! Good night! Thu, 17 Mar 2011 21:56:56 EST Day 1 & 2 Treadmill Yesterday morning's weigh-in was 136.50 41 . Hitting the treadmill again this a.m. (right after I blog this), I MUST KEEP GOING AND MAKE THIS A PRIORITY IN MY LIFE! I know what to do... i just need to JUST DO IT! Have a great day!
Thu, 17 Mar 2011 07:03:04 EST nope.. didn't follow through...(again) Well, as you can see, after about a week (back in Nov.), I lost focus of the Atkins! I have gained since then. I am so looking forward to Spring... that is when I truly get motivated cause I get to be outside. The weather here in NY has been just awful this year... snow snow and more snow! Not making excuses... just sharing my feelings. Today I went to check out a new recreation center and signed up for their Challenge Program. I do better when I am held accountable. At my job they are... Fri, 4 Feb 2011 20:37:15 EST Atkins? Started the Atkins Phase I (Induction) on Nov. 7th and lost about 3 lbs. Today is Day 8. Although I was hesitant to try it, I thought I would give it a shot and see how I feel and how it goes. Still not finished reading the Atkins book I just bought yesterday. (I am making mistakes though... not supposed to have milk in the first phase!) Live & Learn 24 Sun, 14 Nov 2010 13:35:25 EST making exercise FUN!
Okay i get bored easily. Weather is starting to get cool over here which means I am not walking every day and find myself looking for snacks! Gotta get back on track! I bought myself a jump rope. They are cheap and I bought one that is adjustable. I read somewhere that 10 minutes of jumping rope is like 30 minutes of jogging. Doing something is better than doing nothing.. right? The more I use the rope, the better I... Thu, 28 Oct 2010 21:40:11 EST It's just 20 lbs! I just finished reading some of the success stories at sparkpeople where many lost over 100 lbs EACH! Very inspirational and motivating! There is no reason for me to continue with the struggle of losing 20 lbs! If they can lose 100+ lbs, WE, I, can reach my goal too! I know I can do this. Why haven't i done it YET? I know why... because I do not make the daily commitment that is needed to succeed! Yes, daily! I was doing so good... and now... grrrrr

(...picking myself up..... Fri, 15 Oct 2010 21:21:00 EST Stuck! This is not good. I am stuck at 132. It is not necessarily a plateau.
