MAGMAN's SparkPeople Blog MAGMAN's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Why I Walk I suppose this is really a reminder to myself that although I need a healthier diet, it's not my only goal, or even my most important one. That distinction belongs to overall health, and regular exercise is perhaps its most important component.

For me, it may also be the most difficult. I really don't like exercise unless it's a team sport or group activity. Other than kayaking, I'm not involved with team sports, mostly (I tell myself, anyway) because group members are always mu... Sun, 28 Nov 2010 20:05:01 EST 30-day 10-minute Exercise Challenge: Perfection is not the Goal The beat goes on...

I did 4 walks in 4 days, but skipped yesterday as my still recovering broken toe began hurting. Initially I felt bad about yesterday, but I'm putting things in perspective: Today my toe feels better, and I'll be putting in another 10-20 minutes, even with the rain.

It's important for me to not get too perfectionistic about the walking, as this tends to eventually become self-defeating. That's why I gave myself the goal of 5 days a week of walking... Sun, 7 Nov 2010 11:28:59 EST Why I Shouldn't Skip a Meal Stayed late at work, so that I could go straight to a movie with friends. I didn't budget my time properly, and had no time to buy a dinner. After watching the fist movie, I was so hungry, I had to eat something, and a movie theater is one of the worst places for a vulnerable tummy. Result....3 serving equivalent of chocolate truffles, and over 69 grams of fat with 25 minutes. No, not good at all, and feeling sugared out. Another lesson learned. 493 Sat, 30 Oct 2010 01:59:39 EST Taking Time Out for Myself at Work I work in front of a computer all day (hey, it beats the meetings and some of the presentations I go to as well). I feel pretty fortunate: Since it's my own office I can listen to music (except when I really need to concentrate, which is most of the time), I can be as cluttered as I want (I know, bad habit), and I have sanctioned times for lunch and breaks.

So what do I do? I keep things too disorganized (even for me). and--worst of all--
I work through breaks AND lunch. ... Wed, 27 Oct 2010 18:43:32 EST Grocery Shopping Not big news here, but a nice new behavior: I went to the store today to get some ingredients just for a recipe I saw here. Bought some brussel sprouts (yeah, I used to hate them too, but began liking them a few years ago) and some walnuts, each of which has some excellent nutritional benefits. A gallon of non-fat milk to mix with my morning EZ protein drink, and that was it!.

Yes, it did help that I was doing something which placed me one street over from the store! But, I saw a... Tue, 26 Oct 2010 22:17:02 EST Tradeoffs: Gained Some Weight, but Eating Healthier After a stunning (to me) decrease of almost 14 pounds in 3 weeks, it was not surprising to see some weight gain this week: Almost 5 pounds a week is not sustainable. Still, I would have liked to at least maintained my weight.

On the positive side, I am eating so much better than before. By tracking my food, I can see how--if I don't make an effort--this fish-only vegetarian is prone to insufficient protein, iron, and B-vitamins. No wonder I had an anemia DX last year! As I track t... Sat, 23 Oct 2010 16:15:27 EST A Slip and A Recovery
Yesterday I ate more (but within range) calories and fat, because I was "under" in these categories.

Surprisingly, I had my first "slip" that night! I felt very hungry around 10:00pm, and, although I knew better, my food craving resulted in going way over everything. OK, maybe not way over--it's not like I had an entire Chicago-style pizza, but PBJ sandwiches, cheese, and a tortilla (or 2) blew what had been a good day.

Not sure why this appetitive increase, esp. ... Sun, 17 Oct 2010 13:12:25 EST My First Blog Not just my first blog here, but I think my first blog anywhere.

I'm very pleased with the results the past three weeks. Having almost reached my goal, I may just change it! However, I am concerned how well I'll do once I reach maintenance.

I've learned some surprising things about some of the foods I eat, and very valuable information about deficiencies in my diet as well. My doctor suspected I was getting enough of certain nutrients, and he was right. (My former do... Sat, 16 Oct 2010 23:34:06 EST
