LYNETTEMOM's SparkPeople Blog LYNETTEMOM's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Canada's capital is under attack I am parked in front of my tv watching the events in Ottawa unfold. Please pray for us as we deal with this. At least two Canadians have been wounded and one gunman is dead. My dd's friend who works on Parliament Hill is safe but the situation is still in progress. Wed, 22 Oct 2014 13:16:55 EST it's not just lipstick on a pig I have been getting lots of tasks done around the house and it is very satisfying. As I've lost weight, I've been motivated to make my surroundings look better as well.
But here's my aha. My brother pointed out that paint is not just for looks. It also protects what it is on. It occurred to me that our bodies need to be cared for in the same way. We tend to focus on appearances but the underlying strength or health is so important.
So I'll keep working on my self and my home. Bo... Mon, 8 Sep 2014 12:58:04 EST make the best of it A new team that I've joined has a member who makes it a point to be happy and say so frequently. That is so inspiring.
Honestly, being a pessimist and grump has not worked for me in the past! I'm really trying to look on the bright side and consciously do all that I can to be joyous and grateful.
Attitude is everything!
224
Fri, 18 Jul 2014 01:51:09 EST Boing, boing! I have discovered that even when my feet are painful, I can bounce on my exercise ball and the FitBit reads that as taking steps! So, I got my steps in today 211 I think it will be great exercise for my thighs. Wonder how sore they will be tomorrow! Thu, 12 Jun 2014 00:02:52 EST summertime I've often wondered if I suffer from SAD, which is widespread in this country. I just know that sunshine and warmth is SO appreciated. This time of year causes me to feel like I have a whole new life! It's tempting to consider moving to a place that doesn't have weather extremes but for now, I'll just be grateful that IT"S SUMMERTIME!!! YAY!!! Mon, 9 Jun 2014 00:44:24 EST spring has sprung It is so wonderful to have nice weather at last and I even include this refreshing rain that has been cleaning the earth almost nonstop for the previous 24 hours. Trees and shrubs have burst into bloom, not to mention my tulips. I tend to feel much more motivated to move when the weather is great. Lovin' it!!! Thu, 29 May 2014 10:42:33 EST musings on mortality We are all on SparkPeople to make our lives better. In the past few days, I have been feeling somewhat pessimistic and wondering if the struggle is worth the effort.

A woman I have always known, 3 years older than me, sister of one of my best friends, class-mate of my brother (who has had health challenges this year), died of cancer. She was always thin and fit and her diagnosis came as a surprise. In a matter of months she was gone.
That same morning, local news repor... Thu, 17 Apr 2014 15:00:25 EST my secret weapon is more like a super power! I am very pleased with my new habit of drinking 4 cups of water first thing in the morning. It is working very well and it is now a no-brainer part of my routine. This is one Spark Streak that I think will be pretty easy to maintain as long as I can be sure that there is a bathroom available! Mon, 17 Mar 2014 00:47:28 EST So easy secret weapon Athough I am not fully into the program I read about, I am simply starting my day with 4 ---yes four full cups of water. I have 2 hot with lemon, then the next 2 warm or cold. With my belly full of water, I don't eat for awhile, as suggested. I seem to be able to keep up water intake for the rest of the day. I'm guessing I have at least 10 glasses/cups of water each day.
The weight is going down.
Pretty easy, isn't it? Give it a try and see if that simple practice works for you! Mon, 24 Feb 2014 12:15:53 EST Weight Group Retreat Well, our retreat is over ---but we were so pleased that we have vowed to continue the practice, in some way or another. Near the end of this month we will meet for one day , all day 9-9.
Six of us were there.; we left home at noon Sunday and returned on Tuesday.
We had planned our meals and that worked very well. Short talks were presented by participants. Exercise was a blast as we went for a walk, did stretching, Sweatin' to the Oldies, dancing wildly as we sang karaoke. We were... Wed, 5 Feb 2014 14:17:19 EST Retreat I have been in a weight group for a few years and our most successful book to date is the Beck plan. This afternoon we are going on a retreat as we begin our latest book: The Spark Plan. I'll report how it went. Send us good vibes! Sun, 2 Feb 2014 12:50:37 EST new year, new opportunities I'm back home, determined to tackle this year with energy and focus. Trying to touch base with many SparkBuddies today, to encourage them and reiterate that we are stronger together.
We have another dump of snow and cold temperatures so I will do some shovelling and of course, spending time in the house cleaning is burning calories too, so it's all good!
My Fitbit will read at least 10,000 today, I vow!
211 Fri, 3 Jan 2014 13:43:08 EST time marches on wow, so much has happened in the last month. My brother took a turn for the worse and went back into the hospital, where they opened him up again to repair damage that somehow occurred, I went on a holiday to Florida and tropical destinations, came home in time for a monstrous blizzard........... life is never boring!
I gained weight while I was away which is what I expected so now I am working hard to get back down to where I was and then keep the downward momentum going..... Tue, 3 Dec 2013 21:35:08 EST technology vs. me! I have always considered myself to be intelligent and capable regarding most mental challenges but I am baffled by technology! I managed to program my VCR back in the day, but now it seems like there is a new problem daily, with gadgets, programs, downloads, applications, ..... Drives me crazy! Sun, 3 Nov 2013 23:06:15 EST heading home Trying to get 101 things done before I leave. When I came back from running errands yesterday, found out Les had cut himself 3 hours before and had gone thru 3 bandages so we went to the doc to have it looked at-- and to do what was scheduled for the appt today so got that over with. Sure hope he will be okay on his own; just like having a kid in the old days, for me! He is a big boy, as the nurse told me several days ago. She thought I was pampering him too much; he needs to build up his st... Fri, 4 Oct 2013 14:03:14 EST update it has been interesting to be care-giver for my bro but he is doing well with his warfarin balanced, the swelling and healing of his leg improving, stronger, so much improved. My intention is to head home tomorrow. Thu, 3 Oct 2013 13:14:50 EST being a "nurse" Have come to stay with my bro, who came home from the hospital yesterday. His open heart surgery has left him very weak but we are doing well, and a home care nurse is due any minute. Lab tomorrow, doc on Thursday, lots to keep us busy... Thu, 22 Aug 2013 02:00:05 EST boing! why is it that after a few days of being good and achieving some success, I over-eat and the scale goes back up? self-sabotage..... Mon, 19 Aug 2013 00:52:53 EST July 1 Canada and July 4 USA Today I'm celebrating my country, including the fact that we are fighting back from a catastrophic flood that has not defeated us. Together, we are strong.
And I'm thinking of my Sparkbuddy from AZ who was evacuated from their summer home, as fire swept through their community killing 19 firefighters. I am so thankful that Eve, her husband and fur babies escaped safely. Neighbors and friends, including Sparkers, are expressing concern and offering support.
SparkPeople may be pri... Mon, 1 Jul 2013 21:11:43 EST thankful to be allowed to return home The mandatory evacuation order was lifted so I was able to sleep in my own bed last night. Today's #1 task is to clean out the fridge/freezer as everything will not have survived the power being off.
I did not get any flood water in my house but the river is now visible whereas it was many, many feet below the sight line previously. The deer are around in the daytime as their homes are gone. My walks will be very interesting as it will be a different landscape now.
Much to do in... Sun, 23 Jun 2013 14:07:35 EST flood! we are experiencing probably the worst flood this city has ever seen. My neighborhood has been evacuated, I'm at my bf's. Also his business cannot operate today, we'll see about the wkend. Since this wkend is one of the biggest of the 6 he runs each year, this could decimate his business. Send us positive vibes.
Hope to be able to check on my house today to see if there is water.
Trying hard to remain positive.............. Fri, 21 Jun 2013 11:09:43 EST computers: episode 2 gaaaa! my laptop won't connect to Wi-fi and so my FitBit isn't tracking either. BF spent an hour trying to trouble-shoot last night, and had no luck. Using the desktop in the den is not as convenient as having the laptop at hand when I'm watching tv, multi-tasking.
Ah, how linked we are to our precious computers! Thu, 20 Jun 2013 13:57:41 EST computers: love 'em and hate 'em I have a desk top and a lap top, both of which are old and slow. I have few skills to get them to do what I want! Now my laptop will not load the left half of the page when I try to visit my teams. I get so frustrated but can't stay off. Hmm, is this another aspect of my addictive personality?
24 211 18 Fri, 7 Jun 2013 10:47:40 EST learn by teaching Remember the best way to get something firmly in your own mind is to pass that knowledge on to someone else! Tue, 4 Jun 2013 01:58:53 EST The more you put in, the more you get out I want to be more accountable to checking in and participating in Sparks so I am dipping my toe in the water and volunteering to be a co-leader for "Life is Like a Box of Chocolates". If any of you (who are not already in the group) are interested, check it out and sign up if you'd like to join the party! Sun, 2 Jun 2013 01:29:50 EST When the birdies return to the nest... My girls are here for the weekend. Since they live in another city, 3 hours away, I don't see them as often as I'd like to and it is sure nice when they come to visit or when I go there. They eat well and are active so they are good companions that way.
I tend to stock up on groceries when they are coming and they usually bring stuff so we end up with lots of food. After they've gone, I have left-overs for days.
Isn't it interesting how food is often the centre of social intera... Sat, 1 Jun 2013 00:55:29 EST music for the soul I use music for many things, not just to exercise but also to soothe myself. For the latter, I've just discovered the late Eva Cassidy. If you've never heard of her, you are not alone, but do yourself a favor and check it out. She has the voice of angel. Mon, 15 Apr 2013 09:22:41 EST rocks and gems One of the things that Ray and I have in common is a history in geology and consequently, a love for rocks and minerals. This trip has been wonderful as we have seen ---and purchased -- a number of beautiful pces and jewelry. I've added to my collection: a chunk of labradorite, a labradorite pendant, an abalone ring, a swiss blue topaz ring, several mystic topaz pces....
Ooooooh-la-la! I know it is my fault but I can't seem to figure out this tempermental thing. Does anybody have any advice? Tue, 26 Mar 2013 00:24:51 EST Sunday slow-down Sundays are such lovely days. I like going to church, reading, going on the computer...
I seldom have anything I MUST do so it is a relaxing day. Today I have really taken it easy, as I continue to recuperate. So I click on something, then go to the other one to see if it has loaded what I clicked on there, and so on and so on, adding up to many steps a day! Tue, 12 Mar 2013 00:04:57 EST Cholesterol Down--Brill My LDL was high when I got my blood tests done so I want to get it down. Read this book last night and wanted to suggest it to other Sparkers.
I intend to follow her steps for the most part, as they are common-sense, achievable goals.
1. eat oatmeal
2. eat almonds
3. eat flaxseeds
4. take Metamucil
5. eat beans
6. eat apples
7. eat margarine with phytosterols
8. eat soy protein
9. eat garlic
10. walk
Tue, 5 Mar 2013 14:50:51 EST snug inside We are having a huge snowfall so I am walking around my house for exercise, cooking a great vegetable based meal and tackling the huge pile of reading material I picked up from the library two days ago. I'm feeling kind of melancholy being alone without my girls.
But one of the things I'm learning through Sparkpeople and other self-improvement reading is that it is crucial to work on yourself. Thu, 7 Feb 2013 15:18:18 EST back to MY schedule my bf's busy time is over until June and we are both resolving to focus on health, fitness and organizing in the next while. I have had a good day today but didn't get enough sleep this wkend so I think tonight will be low-key and tomorrow's another day! Mon, 28 Jan 2013 20:06:27 EST Sunday blessed Sunday chose not to go to church today as I felt I needed to get some more sleep. Fitbit said I'd been awakened 29 times the night before and I believe it! Sun, 13 Jan 2013 18:57:05 EST sick of being sick This cold has settled in, I'm afraid. After being away from home for awhile, I have not left the house since I returned. I have lots to keep me busy but I don't like the lethargy, the nose blowing and the sore throat. At least I got a decent sleep last night, finally. I have an appt on Thursday afternoon, so I will have to go out into the world then for sure.
Bleah.......... Tue, 8 Jan 2013 14:21:45 EST mall walking I hate to walk outside when the weather is nasty and it is slippery so mall walking works for me. So it looks like my resolution to get in lots of walking is working so far! Thu, 27 Dec 2012 17:59:33 EST December musings I have been so busy since I returned home and the Xmas rush shows no sign of abating. Nevertheless, I have been working on my fit and organized goals and feel like I am making progress. The scale may not be where it was when I left, but it is inching downward and I am not stressing too much about anything, really. My bf likes to say that he has no problems, only inconveniences and annoyances. Those are no big deal and in light of the headlines of the day, I pause and count my blessings, at e...
