LKEITHO's SparkPeople Blog LKEITHO's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community 8 years on SparkPeople! I passed my eighth anniversary on SparkPeople the other day. I haven't missed signing in every day during that time, even when things weren't going so well. Seeing everyone's posts and comments is a great motivator to stay on track and continue to improve my eating. I was slowed down this past year by three surgeries, and I regained some weight while recovering, but I am back down into the range I feel best in now. I would still like to lose another couple of pounds, but that will come by jus... Sat, 30 Sep 2017 13:24:34 EST Seven Years on SparkPeople! So I actually hit the seven year mark a couple of days ago on Sept 26. I have had some good times and some bad times over that period, but overall it has been a great journey. I have seen many others come and go over the years, unfortunately, but they have each helped me on my way in some measure. I hope everyone is achieving what they want and need! Thu, 29 Sep 2016 21:50:27 EST 400,000 points! I passed the 400,000 point mark today. Only took me 7 years. I'll hit my 7th anniversary on SparkPeople tomorrow! Wed, 28 Sep 2016 09:44:37 EST New RV, and a promise to myself I picked up my new Type B RV (basically a converted Mercedes Sprinter van called a Roadtrek CS XL) and drove it home from Tucson today. I am making a pledge that I am going to eat healthy foods only when I am traveling in it, and that I will maintain my exercise streak while I'm on the road. Here's to some new, healthy, adventures! Sat, 17 Sep 2016 21:39:13 EST Back to work Today was the last day of my time off, and it is back to work in the morning. It will be a short week, though, so that will help break me back in gently (I hope). I get my hearing aides on Wednesday, so I'll be getting used to them and experimenting with them a bit for the rest of the week. Next week I should get to pick up my new vehicle if there are no issues with getting it delivered to the dealership, so that should be fun! Mon, 5 Sep 2016 21:47:41 EST An eventful couple of weeks for my health Several issues have presented them selves over the past couple weeks. First, I had been monitoring my BP since my last visit with my doctor, and I could see the pattern. I have mild hypertension. I went back to my doc with the list of Bps I had recorded, and he agreed it was high and felt I needed to start on some medication. Next, I had decided to get my hearing checked during my week off this past week and guess what? Yup, I have fairly marked high frequency hearing loss. I have also had ti... Sat, 3 Sep 2016 15:26:47 EST 2500 days on SparkPeople! I recently passed 2500 days on SP. Can't believe I'm coming up on 7 years without missing a day. Love this site! Mon, 15 Aug 2016 20:14:56 EST 6 Years of Exercise This Christmas (December 23 actually) marks 6 years of daily exercise without missing a day. I have done at least 30 minutes of either walking, running, biking or swimming every day since December 23, 2008. This streak has helped keep me motivated to stay mobile and on track even when I have had some rough times with my eating. So on to another year!

Merry Christmas every one! Thu, 25 Dec 2014 14:36:16 EST Senior Olympics Cycling Events Last weekend I did three cycling events as part of the Arizona Senior Olympics.

As you can see, the weather wasn't very good while people were signing in.

However, the rain held off during the rides, and it turned out to be quite a pleasant day. Here people are lining up for the individual starts for the 5K time tr... Sun, 9 Mar 2014 09:44:58 EST Five Years of Exercize As of today, I have gone over five years of doing a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise every day. Come hell or high water, no matter what else was going on in life, I have made time for that 30 minutes, and usually much more. The treadmill desk has made it easy to get my exercise when I'm working, and since I work from home I can use the time I would normally be commuting as well. It has made a huge improvement in how I feel, and in my productivity, even when I have had occasional slip ups wit... Tue, 24 Dec 2013 21:14:13 EST Triathlon today I did the SW Valley YMCA Reverse triathlon today. Not one of my better performances, but the weather was perfect and it was a fun day. Thu, 28 Nov 2013 16:53:17 EST Scottsdale JCC Sprint Triathlon I did the JCC Scottsdale Sprint Triathlon this morning. Beautiful day for it - sunny and warm, with just a slight breeze. I got third in my age group again, which sounds great until you find out there were only three of us in the 55-59 group. Even so, I was very pleased because I improved my times in all three disciplines as compared to the same event last year. I took 15 seconds off my swim, 21 seconds off my bike and an amazing 4:55 off my run time! The run time is the most gratifying for m... Sun, 29 Sep 2013 15:13:10 EST Four Years on SparkPeople! I haven't posted a blog in nearly a year, but I've been here doing all the rest of my Sparking the whole time. And today marks my 4th anniversary on SparkPeople! I'm still a couple of pounds above my final goal weight, but I'm down more than 60 pounds from my highest weight. I have done half marathons and triathlons since I started here and have felt so much better it is unbelievable! And now here I am 4 years in and about to turn 60 and very grateful that I joined this community. Thanks to a... Thu, 26 Sep 2013 21:49:26 EST I'm going to do my first Olympic Triathlon! I started thinking about this some time back, but I hadn't convinced myself to go for it. The swim was the part that was intimidating me. For the event I was looking at, the swim is 1600 m, bike about 24 miles, and the run 6.2 miles. I knew I could do the bike and the run distances, but I was pretty uncomfortable with the swim. However, a couple of weeks ago I did an open water swim in the Bartlett Lake Triathlon, and I did a 1600 m swim at my local pool as well. Today I did a 1700 m swim, an... Thu, 18 Oct 2012 17:15:43 EST Seville Sprint Triathlon I had planned to do what they call the Maxi Plus triathlon today - basically a little longer on each discipline than the regular Maxi sprint. However, yesterday I decided to do the regular Maxi instead because I was still sore from the Bartlett Lake tri I did last weekend. So today's race was a 300 yard swim, 15.4 mile bike and 2 mile run. This format is good for me because I do better on the bike, so the shorter swim and run is OK with me.

The swim was six laps going up one lane ... Sun, 14 Oct 2012 19:47:10 EST Peoria Sprint Triathlon I did this sprint triathlon this morning. It started off to be good conditions for it - cloudy, a slight breeze to keep it cool. However, I found myself feeling kind of crummy, and I couldn't figure out why. I thought I might be a little dehydrated, so I drank an extra bottle of fluids. This helped, but I still didn't feel completely normal. Then it came to me - I had made the mistake of getting wrapped up in loading my equipment and had forgotten to eat my breakfast. Fortunately, I had a cou... Sun, 9 Sep 2012 22:14:09 EST My events for the rest of the year OK, call me crazy, compulsive, committed, or whatever other term comes to mind, but my event calendar is getting kind of full for the next while.

9/9/12 Peoria Sprint Triathlon
9/23/12 Nathan's Tempe Sprint Triathlon
9/30/12 JCC Scottsdale Sprint Triathlon
10/7/12 Bartlett Lake Sprint Triathlon
10/14/12 Seville Maxi Sprint Triathlon
10/28/12 Mesa Iron Gear Sprint Triathlon
11/22/12 SW Valley Regional YMCA Sprint
12/2/12 Fiesta... Wed, 29 Aug 2012 13:08:39 EST Anthem Sprint Triathlon This was a reverse order triathlon (run, bike, swim). We started after the kids race, so it was just after 7 AM and already 87 degrees. Because of the recent storms, it was also very humid! I never seem to do well with the humidity, and today was no exception. I tried to compensate by getting lots of fluids in, but it was still tough. After the run, I was already feeling the effects, but the breeze on the bike helped cool me down a bit and I did better with that part. Getting off the bike, t... Sat, 25 Aug 2012 22:37:40 EST During the dust storm I had a few folks ask me whether we got thru the recent dust storms alright. They haven't given us much trouble other than coating things with dirt outside, but I thought I would give you a look at what happens at our house during one of these storms.

Before the storm:

During the storm:

Mon, 13 Aug 2012 10:58:57 EST Celebrating the rest of pack Over the past couple of months, we have lost three of or best friends and 'pack members' - Frodo earlier this week (cancer), Strider (kidney failure) and Muffy (heart failure). This has been very hard, and we will always have them in our hearts. However, we still have seven little ones to keep us busy and to enjoy life with. Here they are:

Arwen

Gamgee
<img src=" Sat, 11 Aug 2012 10:27:37 EST Frodo is gone We had to let Frodo go last night. He could no longer get fluids in, and was not able to get comfortable. A week from today would have marked 11 years since we rescued him as a tiny sick puppy. It was hard to have to get up this morning and not have him here with us, but we know he is no longer suffering. He will always be with us in spirit.

Tue, 7 Aug 2012 09:01:36 EST Frodo doing OK Frodo has been up and down over the weekend, but generally doing OK. He is still eating and drinking, although his energy level is not great. Most important, though, is that he seems comfortable.

Thank you to everyone for your good wishes and prayers. Sun, 5 Aug 2012 21:49:47 EST Frodo is ill We found out today that Frodo (the dog whose picture I use as my profile pic) has cancer. Specifically, he has hemangiosarcomas in his liver. Unfortunately, there is really no treatment for this. They could try to operate to remove the tumors, but it would be very difficult surgery and it would only buy him another few weeks. So, he is basically going to be on hospice care. He will get some pain meds, eat what he wants, and continue to get all the love and attention we can give him. If he bec... Thu, 2 Aug 2012 22:41:37 EST Day 8 Got thru the day despite the event this morning, and having to battle the temptations of post race food. I got by with some watermelon and banana, and lots of fluids.

Off to CT in the morning, so I'm packing myself some fruit and protein bars so that I have something healthy and portable for the trip.

Have a great week! Sun, 8 Jul 2012 22:17:45 EST Day 7 Not a bad day again today. I'm still within my range, got in a good bike ride, and am more or less ready for the triathlon tomorrow. I'll also weigh in tomorrow to see what effect my first week has had.

Have a good Sunday! Sat, 7 Jul 2012 21:43:51 EST Day 6 Not all the best choices today, but I still stayed within my calorie goal and got 7.5 miles of walking in. I should be able to get in a good workout tomorrow, but not too hard since I have a triathlon on Sunday.

Have a great weekend! Fri, 6 Jul 2012 22:01:23 EST Day 5 5 in a row! Stayed within my range and got 7.5 miles on the TD. Not even any major temptations today, so that helped. Tomorrow will be a bit stressful with my wife going in for a procedure on her back, and my going to the office for a bit (cafeteria and vending machines to be avoided). Also having some repairs done to the patio doors which means having to corral the dogs for a bit. However, after that I have the weekend to look forward to, and a triathlon on Sunday.

Have a good one... Thu, 5 Jul 2012 22:00:21 EST Day 4 Another successful day. I managed to avoid the temptations of hamburgers and hot dogs after the race this morning and stay well within my target for nutrition for the day. Back to work and pretty normal routines for the next 2 days, so looking good! Wed, 4 Jul 2012 21:58:55 EST ARR Summer Series #3 This was a 4 mile run for the 4th of July, and it was held at Rio Vista Park in Peoria (west side of the Phoenix metro area). To be honest, as with all of the Phoenix metro area, there is no water in the 'river' as you can see here:

When I got there, they were setting up the start/finish area:

and they were also star... Wed, 4 Jul 2012 12:26:24 EST Day 3 Another successful day. I decreased my exercise today (a little) to give my legs a bit of a break before the four mile race tomorrow morning. Despite that, I stayed within my calorie range and still had a deficit. There were a couple of points when I thought I might cave (I had to run an errand next door to the local McDonalds for example), but I was able to stay on track with fruit, veggies and water.

Tomorrow comes the first real challenge. It is a holiday of course, with all of... Tue, 3 Jul 2012 22:18:21 EST Day 2 I stayed on track with my eating today - more fruits and veggies, no junk. Also got in another 10 miles on the treadmill desk.

2 down, 29 to go! Mon, 2 Jul 2012 22:34:00 EST July will be my month I'm going to make it mine. Today I got back on the nutrition wagon. I never have any problem getting enough exercise, so it is really the food that I need to concentrate on. There will be several challenges this month - at least three athletic events and a business trip. These have always been difficult for me in the past, but I am making a commitment to stick to the plan thru all of them this month.

One day down, 30 to go! Have a great week, and Happy Canada day to all my Canadia... Sun, 1 Jul 2012 22:08:52 EST ARR Summer Series #2 5K This race was run on dirt roads and trails, so it was very dusty and dry. I set out to try and get under 30 minutes again, but in the first mile my legs were feeling kind of stiff and heavy after my bike ride yesterday. I wanted to keep running and not take any walk breaks so I kept going. The first mile went by in 9:14 which was good, but not as fast as the last one. The second mile was on the trails and had an occasional up and down through a wash, and again I didn't feel like I was keeping... Mon, 4 Jun 2012 12:21:58 EST Chino Valley Triathlon I did this triathlon this morning. Chino Valley is a little over two hours drive from here, so it made for a very early and a very long day, but it was a good event.

Just before the start they told us that ABC Television would be filming parts of the event, and it turned out that one of the competitors in the mini sprint tri was a contestant on the Biggest Loser. Very cool to see him doing his first triathlon.

The maxi tri that I did consisted of a 300 yd swim, 22 mile... Sun, 3 Jun 2012 22:11:45 EST A good weekend I got lots accomplished on the chores I had set myself around home, got some donations taken care of, and got a fair ways to having an area set up in the garage for my bikes and triathlon equipment. Also got in three good workouts - a 5K race, a 22 mile bike ride and a 6.2 mile run. All in all, not bad! I hope you all had a great weekend, too! Mon, 28 May 2012 22:34:50 EST Arizona Road Racers' Summer Series #1 5K - Great Run! This morning I ran the ARR Summer Series #1. This is the first in a series of 5 races - 4 5Ks and one 4 miler - that take place over the next 3-4 months. I haven't done a regular 5K since last summer at about this time, but I've had some pretty good runs as part of my triathlons, so I was hoping I could do this one in 30 minutes.

It was a nice morning for it - sunny and warm, but not too hot, and with a nice breeze. The course started and ended in Papago Park, north of the Phoenix... Sat, 26 May 2012 19:25:22 EST First 5K of the season this weekend I'm going to do the Arizona Road Racers Summer Series #1 5K race this Saturday. I haven't done a straight 5K since last summer, so it ought to be interesting. The weather is cooperating a bit, as well, as it is supposed to be a little bit cooler for the weekend. Hopefully will only be in the 70s when the race starts at 6:30 AM.

Have a great long weekend! Thu, 24 May 2012 22:02:45 EST 1500 Miles Just reached the 1500 mile mark for the year today. This is a combination of walking, running and biking. Amazing how quickly the miles add up! Wed, 16 May 2012 12:40:31 EST Lost another dear friend Our wonderful little girl, Strider, lost her battle with kidney disease today. She came to us as a puppy when she beat the odds by surviving distemper. She went on to be part of our lives for another ten years. As with Muffy, who we lost earlier this week, this was not a total surprise, but it is never easy to lose such a dear friend and family member. We will miss her.

Fri, 27 Apr 2012 22:51:06 EST Goodbye to Muffy She was a wonderful little dog that we rescued several years ago. She loved to sleep on the "big bed", or to curl up with my wife in the family room. She was already 7 when we rescued her, so she was nearly 14 at this point. Her heart was bad, and she had a seizure disorder, and things had just been getting worse for her over the past month or so. We will miss her badly.

Mon, 23 Apr 2012 23:02:39 EST Seville Sprint Triathlon - my first gold! The big news is that I won my age group for today's event. However, for the sake of perspective it should be said that there were only 2 of us in my age group! Still, getting the gold is nice! I won it on the new bike - the other guy was faster than me in both the swim and the run, but my bike time was more than 6 minutes faster than his.

It was a beautiful day for it - sunny and warm. By the end of the event we were hitting the high 80s, and later in the day we hit 102.
<BR... Sun, 22 Apr 2012 23:03:15 EST Got an invitation to lunch tomorrow. . . . . .with Vice President Biden. They are holding the luncheon at the Heard Museum in downtown Phoenix. I know it will all be electioneering and fund raising, but how often do you get a chance to meet in a (comparatively) small group with the VP? I'll see if I can get some pictures and post them tomorrow. Mon, 2 Apr 2012 10:56:03 EST Bugs in my teeth! When I was a teenager, I had a paper route. With my earnings from that, one of the things I got myself was a little Honda 90 motorcycle. For a kid, this was a huge deal. A few of my friends also had bikes like this and we used to putter around the neighbor hoods together whenever we got a chance. The father of one of my friends used to always say to us "I can tell you enjoyed your ride by the bugs in your teeth". Well, more than 40 years later, I'm reliving the feeling on my new bike. It is a... Sun, 1 Apr 2012 19:35:10 EST First ride on the new bike and a couple new pics of it I did my first ride on the new bike today. It is fast, but it is also more unstable, so it takes some getting used to, especially in a cross wind. The gear changes are a little stiffer, as well. I've got a month to get used to it before my next event, though, so I should be in good shape.

<img src="http://pho...
