LISAW/3's SparkPeople Blog LISAW/3's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Frustrated... with myself I am so frustrated with myself this morning that I don't even know where to begin!
I admit that the past 2 months have not been the best. I actually did okay in October, then really struggled in November with food and exercise. I know that not getting exercise combined with not the best food choices is a bad combination, but I had not expected this bad. How bad could it possibly be? Let's just say a 12 pound weight gain in 2 months.

I'm not sure how that is even possible! ... Mon, 26 Nov 2012 10:57:58 EST 2012 Update It has been such a long time since I last posted a blog and I guess it's because I haven't had anything to contribute. Or anything I wanted to share! Mainly since while I still regularly checked Spark, read your blogs, and tracked, my efforts regarding my weight were half-assed. In the last half of 2011, I gained about 10 pounds. Nothing horrible, but above my maintenance range that I had stayed in for about 18 months. By the end of 2011, I was getting close to 160 pounds and I did not w... Mon, 23 Jul 2012 11:34:35 EST New Year's 2012 Welcome to 2012! Another year has ended and a new one has begun. I'm not big on New Year's resolutions, but I am going to use today as a day to stop making excuses and allowances where they are not justified.

Everything dates back to my injury at the end of March 2010 when I ran 2 half marathons within 4 weeks. The stress fracture gave me the perfect excuse to rest, but I didn't manage it well. I ate more than I needed (since I wasn't training) and cut way back on my exercise... Sun, 1 Jan 2012 14:07:40 EST I feel like a fraud... One of the interesting things about meeting my weight loss goal (over a year ago) is learning how to maintain. How to eat to not lose weight, but not slip back into old habits. It was easier for me to cut out "bad" foods altogether than to have a "small" piece since it is too easy for me to have another "small" piece. After all, I'm at goal, right?

I blogged about a month ago about how I had backslid and gained some of the weight back (about 8 pounds over my maintenance range). ... Sun, 28 Aug 2011 23:22:57 EST Back-At-It Challenge This is a challenge to me, to get back to where I want to be. To not let myself continue to backslide. Brief back story: I started Spark in April 2009 at 204 pounds, lost 60 pounds in a year and began “maintenance,” was able to stay within a five pound range until May 2010.

What happened then? A stress fracture in my tibia. That required that I not run for 6 weeks. Even though I continued to exercise at the gym during those 6 weeks, I also continued to eat as though I was st... Mon, 1 Aug 2011 17:54:15 EST Parkway Half Marathon I'll add more details on a later blog, but wanted to get the nitty gritty details down!

This was my third HM (others were Oct 2010 and March 2011).
This was the first HM I ran when I was not sick. (Bonus!)
This was the first HM I ran with a friend!
I set a PR of 2:18:17!

Here's the breakdown:
Mile 1: 10:35
Mile 2: 9:56
Mile 3: 9:42
Mile 4: 10:58 (bathroom break)
Mile 5: 9:51
Mile 6: 10:18
Mile 7: 10:13... Sat, 30 Apr 2011 18:12:50 EST Disappointed in today's eating This isn't a long blog, but it was too long for a status update.

I knew I had eaten too much today. Yet, I continued to eat.
I knew we were going to a birthday party tonight with cake, but instead of declining the cake or decreasing my other calories today, I ate it all.
There was no snacking today, no mindless eating in front of the tv. In fact, I only had 2 meals today, but both were substantial to say the least.
We had brunch out. I was full, but ate until my p... Sun, 10 Apr 2011 00:37:33 EST March and Half Marathon Update Wow! I can’t believe March is gone and it is already April 5! Kind of late for an end of the month recap, but that’s just how it goes sometimes!

Overall, March was a good month. I was able to maintain my weight and tried to get more healthy foods. I’ve been keeping up the running and cross training and trying to keep the strength training going. With limited time to exercise, and running taking up so much of it, I found it difficult to get in cross training and strength traini... Tue, 5 Apr 2011 16:45:28 EST End of February Update I kind of got through February as though in slow motion. I went to work, got the chores done, took care of the kids, got my minimal exercise in. But I felt as though I was just going through the motions. When I got on the scale just over a week ago and saw I had gained 7 pounds, I was not a happy camper.

I decided to hit last week hard. Meaning to up my exercise (and intensity) and make sure I not only stayed within my nutrition ranges, but made sure they were quality calories.... Sun, 27 Feb 2011 23:48:57 EST Running School 10K and a PR! 312

I ran in a community race today that supports the Running School program. It is a program for elementary schools where the kids can run at recess and break times. Volunteers track their mileage over time and they get recognition and awards as they accumulate mileage. It's a great program and I hope it expands to more schools, including ours!

I signed up and ran the 10K, but according to my Garmin, it was 6 miles. My goal was ... Sun, 23 Jan 2011 22:37:00 EST Fender Bender As I was leaving work today, I was in a car accident. I was rear-ended. Seriously, though, I think I have a curse of some sort. I am always rear-ended. I know it's better than being the one causing the accident, but I've been rear-ended 4 times in the past 6 years. Anyway, today's accident had a silver lining.

When the Highway Patrol Officer showed up I handed over my license, insurance, and registration. He stared at my license and kept looking back between the 3 documents. ... Thu, 20 Jan 2011 22:56:14 EST Sub 10 minute mile! I have to start by saying, I love my Garmin.
No, I don't work for the company, but I love the information it tracks for me. I love that I can keep track of my mile splits during a run and see what my current pace is.

Last weekend, I ran 7 miles. I ran the 7th mile in 10:04. I was amazed and couldn't believe I had run the final mile that fast. But it made me think, I can probably run a sub 10 minute mile.

Fast forward to yesterday. I ran 6 miles. I decided to... Tue, 18 Jan 2011 00:30:44 EST Weekly Update As you know, I've been dealing with a cold all week. It started with a sore throat on Sunday and was in my head Monday through Wednesday. Wednesday evening it settled more into my chest and I lost my voice. My 5 year old keeps asking me why I sound like a chipmunk! I don't feel as bad as I sound. I don't feel great, but not terrible.

Nonetheless, I exercised every day this week except Thursday. I haven't run since Sunday morning, but I've gotten in some other cardio and some ... Sat, 1 Jan 2011 18:13:42 EST Blah-filled Tuesday I don't know if I can pinpoint the problem, there are a lot of things contributing to my blah day.
282 I woke up with the head cold (started Sunday).
192 Got on the scale and it said more than I expected. I knew I had gained weight last week since I couldn't stay away from the sugar, but since I'd been weighing every day, I thought I knew where I was. I weighed yesterday morning, then ate great and made it to the gym, and this morning there were 2 more pounds ... Tue, 28 Dec 2010 16:25:46 EST Fitness Christmas Gift You can tell the life changes you've made when you open your Christmas gifts!
Each year, my siblings, hubby, and I all contribute towards a larger group gift for each of us.
This year, my gift was all fitness related! I got a set of 10 pounds dumbbells, some body glide, a 13.1 magnet (in honor of my HM in October), a pair of arm warmers, and a $30 gift card for the local running store! I was super excited with each one I opened!

And with the Christmas money I received... Mon, 27 Dec 2010 20:13:26 EST Holiday Classic Run- cancelled So, I got up bright and early on a cold, wet and windy Sunday morning to hit my local Fleet Feet's Holiday Classic 3 mile run. This was the first run I did last year after I started running, so it felt monumental somehow to run it this year. It was pouring rain when I left my house, but since the run was 20 minutes west, I was hoping the worst had already passed through.

I got to the race site, a park near the American River. It was raining, but it was a light rain. However, th... Mon, 20 Dec 2010 00:41:15 EST First time running with others I was bummed that I missed running with the group from work on Tuesday, but I was at home since my youngest daughter had an ear infection and needed to get in to see the doctor. But...I promised I would get that run in- and I did!

I ran today at lunchtime with 2 of the gals at work who run. Both are extremely more experienced than I am, but they have also been huge supporters of mine since I started running a year ago.

They have their usual 3 miles out and back route t... Sat, 11 Dec 2010 01:21:12 EST Running group? There are a group of people at my work who are runners. And they frequently run together during the day. They each have their own pace, so sometimes they stay together and sometimes they don't. On any given day, it is a different set of people who run- it all depends on schedules and who remembered their running clothes!

I am close with one of the gals who runs. She is the one who got me to start running in the first place and encouraged me to run my half marathon. Well, she h... Mon, 6 Dec 2010 23:27:53 EST 2010 Turkey Trot This year, we did our first Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot as a family. All 5 of us were out there. I had decided when I signed us up for the trot that I wasn't going to run this one. The priority was for us to be out there as a family.

Hubby had the twins in the double jogging stroller and I had our 5 year old daughter. We started off walking, but shortly into it, my 5 year old asked if she could run. "Sure," I said, and off she went! I jogged behind her until she stopped. We... Sun, 28 Nov 2010 00:36:24 EST My Run-iversary On November 15, 2009, I went for my first run. That was when I began the Couch 2 5K program. At that point, I had lost almost 50 pounds and needed a non-weight related fitness goal. A co-worker encouraged me to run and I learned about C25K from Spark members. So, I went for my first run, using the C25K template. I covered 1.75 miles in 34 minutes.

Fast forward one year to today and this morning I ran 3.3 miles in 33 minutes! Monday isn't my usual run day, but it felt momentou... Mon, 15 Nov 2010 17:02:06 EST My First Half Marathon I can't believe that I did it! Despite the planning and the training (and actually running it), I can't believe I did it. It feels surreal and it is a blur, so I will try to recap the best I can remember!

I ran the Four Bridges Half Marathon in Folsom, CA. It starts in Folsom and follows the bike trail along the American River. The course ran approximately 6.5 miles downstream, across a major bridge, and back approximately 6.5 miles back upstream. Overall, the course traversed... Tue, 2 Nov 2010 01:31:27 EST HM Tomorrow- I'm going to do it! For those of you that have been following along, I began running on November 15, 2009, with the Couch 2 5K program. I began running with the goal to run a half marathon the fall of 2010.

I made it through C25K, did some 5Ks, and a 10K race. I began my half marathon training in August and dutifully followed the weekly running schedule. I've endured bouts of shin splints, sore knees, and a wicked butt/lower back muscle that tightens the moment I stop running, but I continued to ru... Sat, 30 Oct 2010 23:57:06 EST 5 days until Half Marathon...and I'm sick! As luck would have it, I am sick. I have 5 days until my first ever half marathon and I am sick. I can't even express how upset I am, but I am determined to do what I need to get better and be out there on Sunday.
198

I ran 7 miles on Sunday, instead of my scheduled 10 miles. My 10 mile route has a 3 mile loop in it where there isn't any way to cut it shorter. When it started raining harder, I made the decision to cut out that 3 miles. I wish I'd gotten all 10 ... Tue, 26 Oct 2010 13:12:10 EST Some Random Musings I ran 10.24 miles on Sunday. As I type that, I can barely believe it. In fact, I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't been there! I finished in 1:53, but that includes 3-4 stops at red lights. I used 2 gels during my run and did not have any negative issues. I think it helped that I had been awake longer and had a regular breakfast before my run, as opposed to rolling out of bed and hitting the road.

I skipped my short run this morning. My knee is bothering me just a bit and I'm a... Tue, 19 Oct 2010 18:53:21 EST Got it in! Despite the stupid toe injury, I got in my morning run today. I kept it short and did just over 5k. The toe is still swollen and sore, but didn't give me any problems on my run- whew!

But I could definitely feel that I hadn't run since Monday! I felt sluggish and it took a long time to find my stride, but that's okay because I did it!

Thank you to all my Spark friends and your encouragement!
Only 2 weeks until my half! Fri, 15 Oct 2010 08:28:35 EST Another stupid injury! I've heard people say that runners become complete hypochondriacs leading up to a big race. They worry and stress about every twinge or pain they feel for fear of an injury which will derail their race.

My first half marathon is Sunday, October 31, which is just about 2 weeks away. And I seem to be subconsciously trying to sabotage my own efforts!

Last week, I rammed my knee into the desk support so hard it actually scraped skin off of my knee. My knee was so sore, bu... Thu, 14 Oct 2010 16:13:03 EST Ten Mile Run! I did it! I ran 10 miles this morning. I have 3 weeks until my first half marathon and I just finished my very first 10 mile run. Even after running it, I can't believe it! I ran for 1:47 minutes. A year ago, I couldn't run down the block and here I am gearing up for my first half!

I noticed a few times during my run that I became lost in my thoughts and forgot that I was running. I had gotten into a grove and my legs just kept going! I'd come to and realize I was still ru... Mon, 11 Oct 2010 13:52:41 EST Stupid Me! I did something today that was stupid and only happened because I wasn't paying attention. At work, I pulled my chair in to sit down and rammed my knee into the wooden support. And when I say rammed, I mean RAMMED! I have never rammed my knee so hard before! I was almost in tears. The pain was enough to make me want to cry, but what really upset me is that I only have 3 weeks until my first half marathon and I don't want to blow my training because I wasn't paying attention and screwed u... Fri, 8 Oct 2010 17:19:49 EST Miner's Ravine 10K Race This race was awesome! I know I'm a few days late with my race report, but I am still feeling great about it 2 days later!

I ran a 10K race in July 2010, walked more than I wanted to, didn't drink enough water (they ran out at the water stations), and finished in 1:12:04.

Since then, I've been training for my half marathon at the end of October, bought myself a hydration belt, and have been experimenting with fueling gels.

I have a few points/highlights about... Tue, 21 Sep 2010 17:50:20 EST Twins- 2 year check-up The twins turned 2 years old at the end of August and had their well baby check up yesterday. For some background, they were born 6 weeks early after my water broke and had to have an emergency c-section. They were both just around the 5 pound mark. My little guy had to spend just over a week in the NICU until his lungs were better developed.

Fast forward 2 years. My little girl is in the 40% for weight and 80% for height whereas my little guy is 80% for weight and 90% for heigh... Thu, 16 Sep 2010 19:17:10 EST Six Mile Training Run Yesterday was a run of firsts for me.

~ It was my first 6 mile training run.

~ It was the first time I ran 3 miles straight without a walk break.

~ It was the first time I experimented with fueling.

It was the best I've felt running to date!

I've only run 6 miles once before and it was a 10k race I did back in the beginning of July. I finished in just over 72 minutes. Yesterday, I finished in 65:38 minutes! I was thrilled to have manag... Tue, 24 Aug 2010 00:17:48 EST Running Pains Well, maybe "pain" isn't the right way to describe it. But that's the problem, I'm not sure how to describe it. A twinge? An inconvenience?

I am in the middle of week 5 of my half marathon training and I have made every scheduled run. But I have been logging more miles overall than I ever had before (even though my longest so far has only been 5 miles). But this week, I've noticed the pain/twinge throughout my legs. It is never debilitating, it doesn't hurt, it doesn't last l... Fri, 20 Aug 2010 18:57:01 EST Running Update and Half Training I just finished Week 4 of my Half Marathon training and I am getting ready to start Week 4. Nope, not a typo!

When I looked at different half marathon training schedules and programs, I decided to go with Hal Higdon’s novice training program. It includes 3 runs a week (one of which is a long run), but it also incorporates strength training and cross-training. I find that I follow programs really well, so having something written out for me is perfect! I printed up a blank calen... Mon, 9 Aug 2010 17:18:27 EST General update, but so tired today I got up this morning and was out the door at 5am for my training run. I did 3.5 miles in 39 minutes. I'm thrilled that my average pace is 11 miles (down from 12 minute miles a few weeks ago).

But, I skipped out on my lunchtime workout at the gym. Why? Because I was tired and I didn't feel as though I could lift the weights for my strength training today. On one hand, I felt bad, but on the other hand, I knew I'd already run 3.5 miles this morning.

Was I tired becau... Wed, 4 Aug 2010 00:32:01 EST Fifteen month progress It has been a busy month! I'm still in maintenance mode- Hooray!

For May and June, I had been fluctuating between 145 and 148, and this month I've been fluctuating between 143 and 146. I'll consider that a "loss"! I also took my measurements this morning and have lost another inch around my waist.

My goal in maintenance has been (and continues to be) to not gain weight, to remain within a 5 pound range, continue to improve my overall health and fitness, as well as t... Tue, 27 Jul 2010 19:19:55 EST Good news from the doctor I went and had my foot x-ray done on Monday and I met with my doctor this morning.

The good news is that there is no stress fracture or anything like that. However, my doctor thinks that burning sensation is caused by a nerve being pinched in my arch. When he asked me what I thought and I mentioned maybe the burning was from the friction inside my shoe and that I had been wearing thicker socks. That's when I realized that my workout socks that I have wearing, not only are they t... Wed, 21 Jul 2010 19:31:30 EST Running shoe solution? So, I don't know if I've found the full answer, but I am making progress in the right direction.

When I last blogged, I had returned the 3rd pair of running shoes I had been fit for. I had mentioned my theory of pain in my right foot being caused by the fact that my right foot is smaller than my left and maybe the shoe is too big. I emailed my doctor, who wants to do an x-ray. (I don't think it's necessary, but I am having it done and I have an appointment with the doctor on W... Mon, 19 Jul 2010 18:41:35 EST Argh!!! The frustration! I don't even know how to handle this shoe/foot thing!

So, I tried a different running store yesterday and got fitted for a new pair of shoes. After trying on 20 pairs (or so), I found a pair that fit well and were comfortable when I ran down the sidewalk. The employee recommended wearing them at home last night to see how they feel. Well, about 30 minutes in, my right foot began to burn! The burning sensation started on the bottom of my foot, but eventually went up the sides, t... Fri, 16 Jul 2010 19:22:24 EST On-going shoe saga Thanks to a suggestion from a Spark friend (4EVERADONEGIRL), I looked for another pair of my off-the-rack shoes that I bought when I began running in November 2009. I've been fortunate to have had no problems with these shoes. I shopped online and found the shoes. And one site had them for 50% off! So, I ordered them and am waiting for them to arrive.

I still have the second pair of shoes I got from the running store. I am waiting to return them until after my shoes come in th... Tue, 13 Jul 2010 01:13:03 EST Running Shoe Frustration It shouldn't be this hard, seriously, it shouldn't.

My $40 off-the-rack at a department store shoes never hurt my feet- not one bit.
But I can't seem to get professionally fitted correctly for a pair of running shoes!

First time, I was told I overpronate and have high arches, so they suggested shoes with lots of side support and inserts. Those caused arch pain and shin splints, so I took them back.

Second time, a different employee reassessed me. He sai... Thu, 8 Jul 2010 19:10:37 EST First 10K Race Recap This past weekend, I ran my first 10K race. In fact, it was my first 10K ever! The furthest I had run before had been 5.3 miles. Overall, I can look back at the experience and say it was great! I know I wasn't thinking that at miles 4 and 5, but I can say that now!

It was the annual Run 4 Independence. They had a 5K and 10K, so I decided to push myself and do the 10K. The race was scheduled to be at the park, so I was looking forward to a more scenic route. Unfortunately, on... Tue, 6 Jul 2010 12:57:51 EST Fourteen Months Progress I can't believe another month has gone by! What happened to June? Before we know it, summer will be over and my oldest will be starting kindergarten. Yikes!

Anyway, back to the topic at did I do this past month? Overall, not too bad. I've stayed within the same 2-3 pound range all month, including my week vacation. I did manage to lose half an inch around my waist, so I am thrilled about that!

My exercising was lackadaisical to say the least in May, so I... Tue, 29 Jun 2010 18:18:19 EST Continuing Saga of the Running Shoes (For background info, please read prior blogs- thank you!)

I have my first 10K scheduled for July 3 and my training for that has been substantially compromised by the fact that my running shoes results in arch pain and shin splints. I feel as though my new shoes have sabotaged my training by reducing the distance I could go. I frequently found myself turning around early due to the pain.

I decided that I couldn't waste anymore training time. I went for a 4 mile run/wa... Fri, 25 Jun 2010 18:41:57 EST Running Shoes Update So, if you've been following along, you know I started running in November 2009. I bought a pair of off-the-rack running shoes, which did well. But since I decided to up my mileage and take this more seriously, I realized I needed a "real" pair of running shoes. I went to the local running store, they watched my feet and suggested some shoes and inserts.

I bought a pair of shoes (for my pronating) and inserts (for my high arches) and figured I was set to go! But my first run di... Mon, 21 Jun 2010 19:24:54 EST Vacation I just got back from vacation. I spent 9 days away from home (and Spark). No gym, no tracking...but I survived! According to the scale, I gained 2 pounds, but I think that will be gone by the end of the week. AND I'm still within my maintenance range!

We took our vacation in Las Vegas with my husband's family and rented a house. I had mapped out some walk/run routes using Spark before we left, but I only got in one run. Since we were on vacation, the kids went to bed later, a... Mon, 14 Jun 2010 18:06:33 EST Thirteen Months Progress Well, this was my first month in maintenance. I started and ended this month at 145.1. Well, that sure sounds like I maintained, doesn't it? But actually, I gained about 5 pounds due to 4 over-eating days (in a row) around Mother's Day, then spent the rest of the month losing it again!

Otherwise, it was a roller coaster of a month. I didn't get to the gym as often as I should or wanted to, but the stress of work really took its toll on me. I worked at my desk during my lunches... Fri, 28 May 2010 18:16:32 EST 5K Evaluation and Results 312
So, I ran/walked another 5K this weekend. It was more of a "fun run" than I had been involved with before. No one could tell where the starting line was or where the course went. I knew when I signed up that there were no timing chips, but I anticipated a large timing clock. I didn't see one anywhere, so as the run started, I looked at my watch (regular watch, not digital) and made note of the minute hand.

Five minutes into the run, I was ready to stop and g... Tue, 25 May 2010 00:07:34 EST Maintaining vs. Gaining I have been at my goal weight for about 2 months now. Not a long time, I know, but it's a start. After I hit my goal weight, I continued to lose a few pounds because I was still in "weight-loss" mode. I updated my Spark info and it recalculated my calories to a higher range. That makes sense, but I had a hard time meeting even the lower part of my new range!

So, I've been trying to shift my thinking from "weight-loss" to "weight maintenance." That is HARD! And I think I've be... Wed, 12 May 2010 12:23:16 EST Recent 5K- decisions, decisions If you've followed my comments over the past week, you already know that last Monday, I dropped a 10 pound weight on my toe at the gym. My big toe bruised instantly, but fortunately it wasn't broken! But of course, the first thought that came to my mind was how was I going to run the 5K on Saturday? I couldn't even walk without wincing in pain!

I made it through the week wearing wide-toed shoes and not applying pressure to the top of my toe. Fortunately, the pain was centralize... Mon, 10 May 2010 17:44:53 EST One Year Spark-iversary Sometimes I can't believe that it has been a year. A whole year since I joined the gym and actually started going regularly. A whole year since I started eating healthier and staying with my calorie range. A whole year since I've been active with Spark, Spark teams, and Spark friends.
503

So much has changed in one year. But here are the highlights:
- lost 60 pounds
- lost 29 inches (neck, bust, waist, hips combined)
- lowered ... Wed, 28 Apr 2010 19:32:31 EST
