LISA01605's SparkPeople Blog LISA01605's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Recipe Blog: Banana Almond Paleo Pancakes It's been a while since I blogged. Hasn't been a great year health wise. I fell back into old habits and regained a lot of weight. I started a new program and so far it is working but I'll get more into that another time. Let's see if it sticks.

Anyway, I am trying to eat healthy foods and cook more. Over the past year I have been getting take out WAY too often. Trying to curb that.

I am not really following any diet per se. I feel like I have a good handle on wha... Thu, 11 Jul 2013 21:18:08 EST Recipe Blog: Roasted Butternut Squash with Cranberries I haven't blogged in a while and haven't recipe blogged in even longer. I kind of lost my mojo this summer. It definitely wasn't the summer I had planned. I was in a bit of a funk. I feel like I am coming out of it now. I am feeling more positive and motivated. I am really committed to getting my eating back on track. Exercise too. I am jumping in with both feet but I'll save that blog for another day. It's a story everyone has heard before: I was off track. I was disgusted with mys... Mon, 8 Oct 2012 20:02:14 EST Evaluating and Generally Feeling Good I haven't blogged in a while and thought I would take a minute to take stock of where I am in my quest for health.

I just finished a challenge with the STOP team. I am co-leader of the STOP team and truly love all of my team mates. It is the most supportive group I have found on spark. We are a private spark team but if you are interested in joining just ask and I will send you an invite. Challenges tend to be 8-12 weeks long- usually right around 10 weeks. A new one starts ... Tue, 28 Aug 2012 20:34:34 EST Weekend Update and The Olympics Overall the weekend was not too bad. Saturday was very active and Sunday was very not.

My trainer workout on Saturday was tough but good. Just what I needed! After that I went to a little farm stand and bought tons of veggies. The big plan for Saturday was to have a cookout with my parents, sister, and her boyfriend. When I got home I cleaned the house and then spent a bit of time running around making food. The weather had been beautiful all day until about an hour before ... Mon, 30 Jul 2012 05:17:51 EST Update Days 2 and 3 and Look Ahead at 4 The past few days have been really great. It feels like I flipped a switch. The difference is like night and day. I feel very focused and on track. Now I just hope it lasts.

I have decided to stick with Eat To Live as my main eating plan. I have mentioned ETL many times. I feel it is very healthy, balanced, and sustainable. It is not overly restrictive either. I want to move toward a vegan eating style but for now I am allowing meat 2-3 times a week. I plan to be more stri... Sat, 28 Jul 2012 09:20:59 EST Day 1 I have done a lot of thinking about how I am going to turn things around. I decided to start journalling again. My current plan is to spend 10 minutes in the morning thinking about my day and setting goals for the day. The goals should be reasonable and achievable. They should also take into account any foreseeable challenges that the day presents. At the end of the day I want to reflect on my goals and see how I did. I can also refer to them throughout the day to give me strength and encou... Wed, 25 Jul 2012 22:43:48 EST If at First You Don't Succeed... Well, that was fun. My no sugar experiment seems to be a failure. Sunday I had dessert at a scrapbooking event. The funny part is, I didn't even really enjoy it. It wasn't worth ending my sugar free streak, it wasn't worth the calories, it simply wasn't worth it and yet, I ate it. I did not have any candy all day and there was plenty around so that's good. I did have zucchini bread which might sound healthy but I suspect there was more sugar and less zucchini. Yesterday I had a late af... Tue, 24 Jul 2012 21:20:59 EST Two Days and Already Tested Today is day 2 of my no sugar decision. So far, so good.

I am still working out the details. It is easy to say "no refined sugar" but what does that truly mean. Some things are obvious like: cookies, cake, brownies, pastries, candy. All of those are pure junk; filled with sugar and really no redeeming qualities. The questionable things are foods that have value but also have sugar. One example is my morning oatmeal. I love Nature's Path organic instant oatmeal. I buy the ... Fri, 20 Jul 2012 22:19:51 EST Decisions I think Wednesday will be my blog day. I go to a yoga class on Wednesday. It is 7:30-8:45 PM. It is also near my work which is 1 hour from home. On Wednesday I go into work a little later and just stay at work until 7. I have a little downtime to fill while I wait. Sometimes I use it to catch up with work stuff other times I use it to catch up with email or reading. I think some of it should be used for reflecting and blogging always helps me reflect.

A little earlier today I... Wed, 18 Jul 2012 18:33:54 EST A BIG THANKS! I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who read my blog and reached out to me. I truly appreciate all of the comments to my blog and spark page, the spark mails, and the spark goodies. I also appreciate all the advice and commiseration. While I am sorry to hear that many people are going through the same thing I am, it does help to feel less alone.

I haven't had too much time to think about things but I do plan to blog more regularly. Even when it is difficult and the new... Thu, 12 Jul 2012 10:09:16 EST HELP! I can't seem to get my eating under control.

I feel like I am searching for something that will work for me. I have tried a vast array of strategies and ultimately I revert back to my old ways. I know what I need to do (decrease/eliminate refined sugar and processed food). I know all the reasons why I need to do it. I have read MANY books. I understand all the science. It all makes sense. And yet... I find myself in Dunkin Donuts getting an Oreo donut and a coffee roll. I... Wed, 11 Jul 2012 17:59:32 EST Ready, Set, Go! Tomorrow I start a new 10 week challenge with the STOP team. The STOP team is a private spark team and I am one of the two leaders. It is a very supportive group with a challenge going pretty much all the time. Most challenges are 10 weeks long. If anyone is interested in joining just let me know and I will send you an invitation to the team.

I want to make some real progress during this challenge. This challenge runs until August 27 which is most of the summer and what better... Sun, 10 Jun 2012 18:56:25 EST The Fitbit I have wanted a pedometer for some time now. I bought one years ago and found it too hard to set up so it sat in a drawer where it may still be sitting. Back then you needed to measure your stride and all this crazy stuff and then wear the device in the exact right place. I have heard that modern pedometers require little to no set up but just hadn't gotten around to getting one. DH bought an ipod nano and uses that as a pedometer. I considered this but the nano is kind of big to carry a... Mon, 4 Jun 2012 21:01:01 EST Food... UGGGGHHH! A lot of what I am going to blog came from a message board post I wrote. After writing it I thought it captured where I was at pretty well and decided to use it to jump start a blog. It seems like quite a while since I have blogged. There never seems to be time for it so I just have to make the time.

After doing a lot of reading about various eating plans I think I have found what works for me. I want to eat along the lines of the Eat To Live plan (by Joel Furhman) but increase... Fri, 18 May 2012 14:04:39 EST Adventures in Raw Food Continue I just wanted to give a little update on where I am. I never seem to have time to blog so I am just going to make the time.

Since the St Patrick's Day Green Smoothie Challenge ended on 3/19 I have stayed pretty much 100% raw. On a typical day, breakfast is a green smoothie, lunch is a chopped salad, and dinner is a free for all. Dinner is always tough. I am tired from work and don't really feel like putting anything together. Some nights I am not even hungry. I usually make a... Thu, 29 Mar 2012 20:37:45 EST Post Challenge Day 1 Yesterday was the first day off of the challenge. My goal is to eat raw for the rest of the week and then take it day by day. I am really curious to try out raw for a while and see how I feel. I had two smoothies and chopped salad yesterday.

Breakfast Smoothie:
banana (119 g)
raspberries (287 g)
dandelion greens (70 g)
yu choy (123 g)

Total Calories: 311

Here are the pics:

The fruits:
<img src="http://photos-ak.sparkpeop... Wed, 21 Mar 2012 05:37:57 EST Green Smoothie Challenge Day 3 Wrap Up and Overall Wrap Up Day 3 was yesterday. It was also the last official day of the smoothie only part of the challenge. There are 3-4 more days of readjusting. I joined the challenge late so my daily challenge emails are delayed. I am not exactly sure what I am supposed to do during the readjustment time. Guess I will find out in two days when I get the emails. LOL!

Yesterday was different in that I had to go to work. Working makes it difficult to make smoothies fresh. I could bring my blender ... Tue, 20 Mar 2012 05:43:38 EST Green Smoothie Challenge Day 2 Wrap Up Day 2 was yesterday and overall it went well. I did stray from the challenge at lunch by going out to eat and having a garden salad. I went out to be social and felt awkward not eating anything. I ordered a house salad, no dressing, and two waters with lemon. I feel bad for straying from the challenge but I feel good about what I ate and my ability to stick to my plan. Before I went I made a deal with myself that I would only have raw vegetables and I stuck to that deal. The good thing... Mon, 19 Mar 2012 05:17:44 EST Green Smoothie Challenge Day 1 Wrap Up Today was day 1 of the Three Day Green Smoothie Challenge and it went very well!

I am very glad today was a Saturday and also glad I did not have any plans. Both factors made sticking to the green smoothie challenge much easier. I slept in and overall today was a lazy day. I gave my body rest that it desperately needed and on top of that I gave my body excellent nutrition.

I started the day with 16 oz of water (warmed to 95 degrees F) and the juice of 1 lemon
A w... Sat, 17 Mar 2012 22:02:33 EST Three Day Green Smoothie Challenge Well, the last time I blogged was Feb 8, 2012 and I had just bought size 12 jeans. Well, time has not been on my side. I am now solidly back in my size 14s and a good 10 pounds heavier. Not too happy about it but I have only myself to blame. My eating has been out of control. Too much eating out, taking out, and sugar, sugar, sugar. I somehow stumbled upon Easter candy in a store and somehow I got hooked on sugar... again. I have made several attempts at getting back on track and none ... Fri, 16 Mar 2012 23:08:40 EST Size 12s! Major non scale victory today!

I bought 2 pairs of size 12 jeans and they fit! The last time I wore a size 12 was in college and it was for a very brief time. It was the first time I ever learned about healthy eating and working out and I had gotten into the 160's. At least 168, not sure if I got lower. If I did, it was fleeting. I probably wore size 12s for a month before starting to gain and going back to 14's. 14, 16, and 18 are the sizes I have worn for the majority of m... Wed, 8 Feb 2012 19:02:50 EST It's Been a While- Checking In The title says it all. It has been a while since I blogged about my progress (or lack there of) and I wanted to check in. Review for myself where I am and where I am going. Making my review public gives me that little added incentive to stick to my plans.

January was going along pretty well and then this past week it all kind of fell apart. I don't really know what happened. I went to a wedding last Saturday and while I didn't eat out of control I did eat things I haven't been... Sat, 4 Feb 2012 21:07:38 EST Recipe Blog: Raw Rosemary Crackers Note: This recipe requires a dehydrator. If you don't care about the crackers being raw you could probably bake them in the oven but I have no idea what temp or for how long.

I try to eat as much raw food as possible because raw foods have most/all of their nutrients intact. There are some non raw items that I really like. For example, crackers and breads. I like the crunch. After getting a dehydrator for Christmas, it became possible to make my own raw crackers. Anything co... Sun, 15 Jan 2012 14:09:11 EST Recipe Blog: Beet, Carrot, and Red Onion Salad with Minneola Yesterday I stocked up on produce. I was very low on fruit. While shopping in my local organic market I came upon minneolas. They look like oranges to me. According to Wikipedia they are "a cross between a Duncan grapefruit and a Dancy tangerine." I decided to try one. One of my goals is to try new fruits and veggies when I stumble upon them. This one was a no brainer since it looked so non threatening. I also bought beets. I used the greens to make a smoothie and absolutely LOVED it... Fri, 13 Jan 2012 19:35:07 EST C25K Goal Met!! The big news for today: I finally completed the couch to 5k (C25k) program!!!

A little history... running was never my thing. Even is high school. I was never particularly athletic. I was always more into books, and TV, and other sedentary interests. It probably didn't help that my running form was often ridiculed. Even by my own mom. To be fair, she wasn't being mean I just looked that funny. I was convinced running wasn't for me. It probably doesn't help that I didn't pa... Sun, 1 Jan 2012 19:17:48 EST 2012 is here!! 2011 is officially over.

It was a pivotal year for me. In April I decided to restart my weight loss/get healthy journey in earnest. In April I was 236 pounds and not happy about it. In 2008 I reached a low of 187.5 and maintained around 193 for a while before starting to gain. I gained and lost the same 20 pounds for a couple of years before I started steadily gaining at the end of 2010 and beginning of 2011. I was rapidly approaching my start weight of 254 pounds. The thou... Sun, 1 Jan 2012 00:52:30 EST Recipe Blog: Raw CA Sushi Rolls Now that the holidays are over I am getting back to healthy eating. I am going to try a bunch of new recipes that I have been collecting. Most of them are raw recipes from the book "Raw Food Made Easy for 1 or 2 People" by Jennifer Cornbleet. This is the first recipe I have tried from the book:

California Rolls

Makes 2 rolls, 1 serving

Ingredients:
2 nori sheets
2 teaspoons mellow white miso
2 cups alfalfa sprouts
1/2 ripe avocado thinly... Mon, 26 Dec 2011 14:54:58 EST Turning things around? So yesterday was flat out horrible. I don't know what got into me but all I wanted was junk and sugar and that is exactly what I ate. By the afternoon, I was almost in a frenzy looking for any junk/sugar I could get my hands on. I don't know why I get like that! I can be doing well and staying my course and all of the sudden it's like someone else takes over. I throw my aspirations and goals out the window and live in moment. I give into any and every temptation.

Today has be... Tue, 20 Dec 2011 15:44:46 EST Day 1 of 5 Day Challenge: Success! From today until Thursday (5 days) I have no planned social events. I challenged myself to stay on plan for these 5 days.

Today was day 1. I would call it a success even if it wasn't perfect.

We went over a friend's house and ended up staying for Chinese food. Eating was not planned. We thought we were dropping by for maybe an hour. It turned into 4 hours. My usual Chinese food order is filled with unhealthy appetizers and virtually everything involves meat. Thi... Sun, 18 Dec 2011 19:31:46 EST Cookie Fest: Epic Fail Today I went to a friend's house for "cookie fest" which is a tradition started back in college before either of us were married and long before her daughter was born. Basically, my friend bakes cookies like crazy over the holiday season and DH and I go over to help frost the sugar and ginger bread cookies. Then we leave with a tin or two of a variety of cookies. DH isn't a big sweets eater so for a week or two after I pig out on cookies. And I wonder why I always gain over the holidays..... Sat, 17 Dec 2011 22:57:07 EST Day 3 of 3 Day Challenge: Success!! Today was another successful day!

Eating was excellent given the temptations. DH and I went out to dinner. We went to his favorite restaurant. There's not a ton there that I can eat. Most dishes contain meat and/or cheese. They make a killer chicken parm, which is why DH likes it there. In the past I got the dinner salad with balsamic vinaigrette on the side and an order of edamame. Tonight I tried something different. I got the "Berry Burst" salad which had greens, strawb... Fri, 16 Dec 2011 22:52:22 EST Day 2 of 3 Day Challenge: Success! Today was another perfect day!

Eating was excellent. There were some temptations but only minor. On my drive in I really wanted to stop for a muffin or bagel. I resisted. I stopped by a friend's house to check on her cats and she had pretzels out. I was tempted to take one but I didn't. That was more of a fleeting thought. She also has a bowl of candy on her table but I was prepared for that and I didn't even think of having a piece. The pretzels took me by surprise. By th... Thu, 15 Dec 2011 19:51:55 EST Day 1 of the 3 Day Challenge: Success! Today went exactly to plan!

Eating was excellent. Below is what I ate today in case anyone is interested. I didn't have too many temptations today. I went grocery shopping this evening and was a little tempted to buy a treat but I did not let myself. I have used up all my treat calories for the week and then some. I did buy a lot of healthy fruits and veggies including what I need to make a raw California sushi roll. I bought a sushi mat from Amazon and it arrived yesterday... Wed, 14 Dec 2011 21:02:40 EST Three Day Challenge: Feel Free to Join Me So my eating has been out of control and I am going to reign it in before I undo anymore of my hard work.

Challenge:

For the next three days: Wednesday 12/14 until Friday 12/16

No refined sugar
No artificial sweeteners
No white flour
No meat
No dairy

I need a major reset to the healthy living path I was on and this will be a huge step in the right direction. Over the next two weeks I am going to be met with many food temptation... Tue, 13 Dec 2011 21:39:11 EST 12/5 to 12/11 Update... A week of sugar binges So last week was not great. On the plus side most gains were short lived. My weight went between 181 and 185 all week. I ended up at 185 today but only because I ate horribly yesterday and haven't recovered from it yet.

Sugar is my main problem. It seems that once I start, I can't stop. I guess I shouldn't say "can't" since I control what I eat but let's just say it's REALLY difficult to stop. Both literally and figuratively, a taste of honey is worse than none at all. As so... Mon, 12 Dec 2011 11:09:56 EST Allergy Reaction Update In my last blog described a weird reaction I had to an allergy shot last night. I talked to the Dr. and after discussing things, he thinks the nurse may have hit a blood vessel during the injection. Usually allergy shots are injected under the skin and allowed to slowly absorb for 48 hours. If a blood vessel is accidentally hit, they get absorbed rapidly which can lead to an adverse reaction. This theory is supported by the fact that my arm did not swell at the injection site. Actually, ... Tue, 6 Dec 2011 20:07:06 EST Weird night Leads to an Eating Binge So last night after work I went for my allergy shot. I have been getting allergy shots for over 10 years now. In the beginning I got 4 shots. After a reevaluation I was able to go down to 2 shots. Allergy shots have changed my life for the better. Before them I was on 3 meds and an inhaler and I couldn't be around a cat for more than 20 minutes without my eyes swelling shut. If I touched a cat, my skin would break out in hives. After being on allergy shots, I can have 3 cats live with ... Tue, 6 Dec 2011 15:43:54 EST 11/28 to 12/4 Week in Review Last week was a great week! I jumped right back into my Eat To Live eating plan after being off plan for Thurs-Sun (11/24-11/27) the week before. I started the week with a 5.5 pound gain after my 4 day eating binge. I was committed to getting rid of it. I am happy to report that this morning I am down 6 pounds. All of my holiday weekend binge weight is gone plus an additional 0.5 pounds!

Eating wasn't completely perfect but pretty close. There were a few days where I just f... Mon, 5 Dec 2011 10:48:39 EST Update... Restarting ETL This week should have been week 6 for ETL. I was so far off plan so much of the time that I can't really call it week 6. I did ok until Thanksgiving. I had some cheese a few times but nothing terrible. Even Thanksgiving wasn't that bad. I stayed away from the turkey, gravy, and rolls but did have some butter sour cream. I gave away all the dinner leftovers but ended up with ice cream cake, ice cream, pumpkin pie, and cookies still in the house. That was not good!

Friday wa... Sun, 27 Nov 2011 20:25:16 EST ETL Days 30 to 33 Tuesday was day 30, Wednesday was day 31, Thursday was day 32, and today is day 33.

Weigh in:
Day 30: 185.5
Day 31: 185.5
Day 32: 184.5
Day 33: 183

So, as a recap. I ate very off plan Sunday and ended up with a 2.5 pound gain bringing me to 186.5 on Monday, my official weigh in day. I expected the gain and I didn't let it bother me too much but I immediately set about getting back on plan and getting rid of the gain. I have learned that quick gains... Fri, 18 Nov 2011 14:42:44 EST ETL Day 27, 28, and 29 Saturday was Day 27, Sunday was day 28, and today is day 29.

Saturday was a day of challenges but I made it through pretty well. I went to my cousin's wedding. I started the day with my usual healthy breakfast. We had to leave the house at 12 and there was no time for lunch before we left. I brought a vegan, organic, raw bar. It had 190 calories in it. I also brought a box of raisins (100 cals). I figured that was a pretty decent lunch. I was very happily surprised to find... Mon, 14 Nov 2011 15:22:44 EST ETL Day 25 and Day 26 and Short Term Goals Yesterday was day 25 and today is day 26. Both were perfect eating days. Last night I made a big batch of vegan chili so I will be having that over steamed greens for dinner for a few days.

Exercise has been excellent this week. Yesterday I did an interval workout on the elliptical. I did 2 minutes at more or less max speed and 3 minutes at a slower speed and repeated. I did 30 minutes including a 5 minute warm up. Today I did C25k week 2 day 3 followed by incline interval... Fri, 11 Nov 2011 14:00:02 EST ETL Days 23 and 24 Yesterday was day 23 and today is day 24. Eating is no longer a problem. At least on "normal" days. I am perfectly content with what I am eating and even look forward to it. This week I bought some asparagus and I looked forward to eating it. I truly get excited when I see things at the organic market that I haven't had in a while like asparagus or pineapples. Pineapples seem so decadent to me. They are not always available so when they are it's a real treat. I no longer crave, or even... Wed, 9 Nov 2011 14:42:28 EST STOP Team Challenge: Reasons to Lose Weight The STOP team challenge this week is to blog about the reasons you want to lose weight. This is what I came up with...

My number one reason to lose weight is to (hopefully) avoid disease. The genetics from my mom's side of the family are not great. There is cancer, diabetes, arthritis, and high blood pressure. There are also heart attacks and strokes but I think those were related to the diabetes. I don't want to end up taking tons of meds when I get older. In several of the ... Tue, 8 Nov 2011 08:07:11 EST ETL Days 20, 21, and 22 and Week Three Review Saturday was Day 20 and Sunday was Day 21. This was the first weekend since starting ETL that I did not have any social commitments. That meant it was a good opportunity to make this a perfect ETL eating week. I am happy to report that I made this happen. Week three was a perfect ETL eating week. Everything was to plan all 7 days!! The weekend did have some challenges. DH and I went to a movie both Saturday and Sunday. Usually, going to the movies means snacks. Usually Ben and Jerry... Mon, 7 Nov 2011 09:37:58 EST ETL Day 18 and 19 Yesterday was day 18. Eating was perfect. For exercise I did 30 minutes on the elliptical and a 30 minute ST circuit routine. I do 4 machines and then a circuit of 7 exercises. I was able to increase my weights on the machines and I increased my reps for the circuit. Depending on the exercise I usually do 12 or 15 reps per set. Yesterday I did 15 or 20 reps per set for all three sets. I am feeling so much stronger already and it has only been 3 weeks of consistent ST.

Yest... Fri, 4 Nov 2011 09:55:21 EST ETL Day 16 and 17 Yesterday was Day 16. It was a perfect eating day. I was running late (as always) so I only did a 10 minute cardio warm up on the elliptical and then a 30 minute ST workout. I am able to get in 5 gym days this week so I figured a little less general cardio was fine. ST and C25k are my priorities right now. I really pushed myself during my ST workout. I do seven exercises in a circuit. I typically do 3 sets and between 12 and 15 reps depending on the exercise. For my last set I did bet... Wed, 2 Nov 2011 09:19:56 EST Week 2 Review and Days 13, 14, and 15 Day 13 was Saturday. I went to a Bachelorette potluck and I did not eat very well. I thought I did ok with dinner. I had a lot of salad, 1 manicotti, 1 breaded chicken piece, and a little bit of mac and cheese. Definitely not on the ETL plan but I did exercise portion control and there were a lot of foods I didn't even touch. I almost skipped the chicken but it was just too tempting. Dessert is where things fell apart. I should have had nothing but I decided to have a raspberry square... Mon, 31 Oct 2011 14:41:46 EST
