Merry Christmas to all my sparkfriends!
You have made this a wonderful year - thank you for all your support!!

Feliz Navidad

Thu, 25 Dec 2014 10:39:03 EST Day 2 of the hurricane The wind started was getting stronger and stronger after I posted last night and at around 10pm the rain started - tropical down pours. We had sustained winds around 65mph and gusts up to 75mph - tropical storm force as we were getting the outer bands.

Our electric was going in and out with all it's accompanying sounds: back-ups beeping when it went off and things making noises kicking back in. Most of this was between 2 and 3 am and just as we were ready to settle back to sleep t... Tue, 16 Sep 2014 21:24:28 EST Hurricane Odile It's 9:30 pm Monday night (9/15) and the wind is really picking up as well as the rain. The windows are rattling and it is all sounding quite ominous... and that is just the outer band of hurricane Odile going right over us. I cannot imagine what it must have been like for the people in Cabo San Lucas early this morning, which took a direct hit.

This morning I was out around town and took a few shots of the waves. That was 12 hours ago and the show hadn't really started yet. Tomo... Tue, 16 Sep 2014 00:43:09 EST Haircut and color Yesterday we had a day off from spanish lessons and pickle ball, so I took the opportunity to have a long overdue haircut and have it colored again.
It is a little shorter than planned and the color slightly more copper but it will grow and it will fade :) Still, I love my new cut and color, even if it wasn't quite planned that way.

August has been a busy month so far. We had a week off from less... Sat, 23 Aug 2014 17:24:19 EST It's been a while.... It has been a while.. ahum.. over a month... since I last posted a blog. I guess I got lazy
2
Or.. maybe there just hasn't been much going on this last month. Not quite true - our town is different in the summer months. Most of the gringos have gone north for the summer and there are more mexican tourists in town, especially the last 2 weeks. It is fun to watch the families with small children on the beaches.

The down side of the hotter months is the lack of ... Wed, 30 Jul 2014 13:44:12 EST Zucchini noodles On our trip north last week I found this funny looking gadget at Walmart - a spiral vegetable slicer called "veggetti" It cuts vegetables like zucchini and carrots (to mention a couple) into long stands, like spaghetti noodles. It has 2 thickness settings.
As I have eliminated wheat (for the most) it means that pasta is not an option for me, so this looked a great way to still get the look and maybe even the texture of spaghetti.

Yesterday was my first time playing with it an... Fri, 27 Jun 2014 11:52:16 EST Back patio cover When we covered the front patio, we also had the steel guys put up a structure in the back to be covered with bamboo at some point..
That happened last weekend and it looks beautiful and it gives a nice shade.

Right now it is a little warm (95F) to sit outside, even in the shade but come fall, this will be wonderful! Wed, 25 Jun 2014 12:27:49 EST Haircut and color Yesterday I went to make an appointment for a haircut at the salon I found in March. I hoped they could fit me in right away and I was lucky. I asked if she had time for color as well and she she said that this is the quiet time of year and she had all the time in the world.. so I took the plunge and had my hair colored professionally for the first time ever! I have always used a box and did my own color at home but this was luxury!
It turned out really nice and she did a great job on th... Wed, 4 Jun 2014 13:04:12 EST Morning view from my front patio The front patio faces east and gets the morning sun. It is a great place to enjoy breakfast of a cup of coffee and watch the boats.
I love it when the sun sparkles on the bay - so pretty

This was over the weekend. We are having cloudy weather right now and it feels like rain, which is a nice change from the sunny weather we have most of the time but even with the clouds we are in the 90's and this ... Thu, 29 May 2014 12:12:07 EST Memorial Day outing We were invited by our neighbours to go out with them on their boat for the day, together with other neighbours of ours. DH had planned to take his boat out for the day but this sounded like a fun get together with friends.

We left the marina around 10:30 and headed north towards San Pedro Island. On the way there we spotted some sea lions, a sea turtle close by the boat and a whale in the distance.

San Pedro Island

<img src=" Tue, 27 May 2014 12:56:00 EST 2 week water shortage The water company had to shut down one of the big wells for maintenance and that means limited or no water for 2 weeks. We had water coming in to the big 500 gallon tank till mid day Monday and have used very little since.
In Mexico water is a precious commodity and we are already careful but now we had to be downright frugal. At least we got notice from the water company so we could prepare.
We filled totes and buckets and put those in the showers. The master shower has 1 tote and ... Sat, 24 May 2014 12:05:36 EST New patio cover! Our front patio faces east and doesn't get shade till the afternoon. We have a gorgeous view over the bay and like to sit and have our morning coffee watching the boats go in and out. We do gt a lot of wind and found that the umbrella doesn't hold up... it has been blown inside out several times, so most of the time it's not an option. We finally bit the bullet and decided to have a cover build.

This is the before:

<img src=" Sat, 17 May 2014 12:04:44 EST Batch cooking On the Plan I have been rotating 3 different breakfasts: flax granola, pumpkin pudding and blueberry pear compote. The other day I felt like a change and scrambled some eggs with mushrooms, onion and bellpepper.

It was great and it kept me full till lunchtime. So now I have 4 breakfasts to rotate :)

Anyone who knows me well will tell you that I am a lazy person.. I have to tell you that is mos... Tue, 13 May 2014 12:20:22 EST Fish salad I had some leftover cooked yellowtail (white fish) in my fridge and needed to do something with it. The other night we were at a potluck party and a neighbour brought her famous chicken salad - shredded chicken, mayo and onions and a few other bits and pieces. It was delicious!
It gave me the idea to do something similar with the leftover fish.

I shredded the fish, added chopped red onions, parsley and apple

<img src=" Mon, 5 May 2014 12:01:35 EST Sweet potato chia pudding Living in Mexico it is much harder to find the ingredients of The Plan recipes. Some are simply not available here because of the climate - kale being one of them.. and I love! kale. So over the last year I have learned to make substitutions or just not make that particular recipe..

One of my favorite breakfasts is the pumpkin chia pudding and for a while I could get the canned pumpkin but last month the store ran out and didn't get anymore.. also at 39 pesos ($3.25) a can it was ... Sat, 3 May 2014 12:59:35 EST Time for a re-boot Yesterday was a stressful day between DH having a knee injury (so no pickle ball for a while) and me getting a flat tire on the way to the market and finding out the spare was flat too :((
Needless to say I didn't make it to the markets and DH kindly offered to have lunch out and I jumped at the chance to have my favorite mexican street food, so we went to our favorite taco place. I was ready for some comfort food after lots of salads and veggies and my weight still stalling...
<B... Sat, 26 Apr 2014 12:38:59 EST Sunrise The other morning I woke up early to a beautiful sky - worth getting up for and take a pic :)

5:50am

The sky changed over the next few minutes and looked like this at 5:55 am

We have had a few cloudy days and they make for the best sunrises :)
It has also been great to have some cloud cover when we ... Sun, 13 Apr 2014 11:36:15 EST Grilling time! The weather is warming up and a couple of days we have either come very close or actually hit 90F. We have the doors and windows open and the ceiling fans running. A lot of our meals are being cooked on the grill with plenty of leftovers to have with big salads.

Last month I was given some turkish spices from Istanbul by a friend who was going north of the border and knew she couldn't take them across. Customs on both sides of the border have tightened up their inspections and ther... Thu, 10 Apr 2014 21:37:31 EST I joined a gym! Yes, you read that right... I joined a gym. For someone not into formal exercising at all this is something really weird. Now don't expect to see me in torture room anytime soon ~ we joined the gym to have access to the pickle ball court and the pool but who knows...stranger things have happened LOL
Pickle ball is a lot of fun and the bonus is getting a good workout from the running around, swinging the paddle. laughing and working up a good sweat. I know, ladies "glow", but after a f... Mon, 7 Apr 2014 11:48:48 EST Sunday lunch for 7 Yesterday we hosted a lunch for some of our friends going north. It was fun to spend some time with them over a leisurely meal on the back patio. The wind had died down and it was a lovely calm, sunny and warm day. We needed 2 umbrellas to keep us in the shade!
One of our friends has to eat gluten and dairy free - so my first thought was: Plan food! I did go through my spices and especially the spice mixes to make sure they were ok and had to set a few aside that have "food starch" (what... Mon, 31 Mar 2014 12:55:05 EST Taking a breather I have been on The Plan since February 1st and I am fairly happy where my weight is right now. I would like to be a few pounds less but for now I am taking a little breather and relax my program a little.
This time of year is when a lot of the winter people go back to Canada and the US and there are lots of events saying goodbye to them all. It is hard to stick with a program when there are so many social occasions...
236
So my plan for these weeks is to relax a... Wed, 26 Mar 2014 12:50:43 EST New haircut Yesterday I went to a different salon for a haircut. I have been to many places in town with mixed results, so I was a little nervous.
When I got there the place was busy and obviously they were running late. Hey, this is Mexico a 10am appointment means anything before noon LOL I had fun watching others getting a pedicure, a manicure and a color treatment.
Half an hour later it was my turn and after getting my hair shampooed the girl gave me a head and neck massage - very nice! The... Sat, 22 Mar 2014 11:52:19 EST Chopped salad Anyone who has been following my blogs knows that the chopped salad is a staple in my eating plan. But what exactly is a chopped salad?

This is the recipe from The Plan:
Makes 4 servings
5-6 cups of shredded romaine
1 zucchini
1 carrot
1 apple
red onion (to taste)
cilantro
seeds (pumpkin, hemp or sunflower)
1/2 avocado

My bowl won't hold all that, nor will my fridge accommodate a larger bowl, so I half the recipe. I also leave... Wed, 19 Mar 2014 12:19:06 EST Mexican street food Yesterday I felt like a change from my usual veggies and protein, so I decided to join DH when he said he'd have lunch out. We went to our favorite taco stand: JJ's.

I had 2 carne asada tacos. They give you a choice flour or corn tortillas and being wheat sensitive I went for the corn. You get the tortillas topped with meat and then you go to a cart where you can choose your toppings of different salsas... Fri, 14 Mar 2014 14:35:10 EST Batch cooking and planned leftovers A few comments I have heard lately from family and friends got me thinking about what makes it so hard to stick to a healthy eating plan.. apart from the obvious: cravings for comfort and convenience foods.

The main thing about healthy eating is to dump the junk and for me that is most or anything that comes in a package. If it needs a label to tell me what's in it and the ingredient list sounds like a science project - forget it!

The biggest change from processed food ... Wed, 12 Mar 2014 12:55:36 EST Cookout! Yesterday was International women's day an DH said he'd do the cooking and even offered to do the dishes (I like doing dishes, so I did them)
I had steak and chicken and made some veggie skewers. Mushrooms, bell pepper and zucchini covered in olive oil, garlic and italian spices - yum! That morning I had made a chopped salad and shredded beet root and carrots in my food processor.

This is what it looked like before:

<img src=" Sun, 9 Mar 2014 12:43:07 EST Bougainvillea in bloom Yesterday I did the day 3 menu of the Plan. It is very nice to know that thousands of miles away Mel is following the same menu and eating the same thing - thanks for sticking with me Mel!!
In the morning I went to the markets and stocked up on veggies, chicken, some nice NY strip steaks and a couple of cans of coconut milk.

This is one of my favorite lunches: broccoli soup and a salad

... Fri, 7 Mar 2014 11:22:01 EST Re-starting The Plan My re-start of the Plan has had a rocky start.. I used a different brand of chicken stock and I had a reaction :( After being stuck at 137.5 I am now at 138.3 but I'm sticking with the program as I know it will shift in the right direction again..

Here are some pics of the meals I have had in the last few days.

Monday breakfast - scrambled eggs with onion, spinach, mushrooms and a dollops of hot sauce.

<img src=" Thu, 6 Mar 2014 11:28:50 EST Lunch on the back patio We have unseasonably warm weather here in sunny Sonora, Mexico. The old timers are saying that they never seen it this warm and apparently it is the warmest winter in 50 years. I love it but it could mean a bad storm season late summer with the water being warmer than usual as well :(
For now we are enjoying the nice weather and when it isn't too windy we have lunch out on the back patio. Some days it would be impossible to keep the lettuce on the plate LOL

This was my lunch y... Mon, 3 Mar 2014 12:08:40 EST Grilled veggies and sweet potatoes The other day I made chicken skewers and needed to use up some bell peppers - why not make veggie skewers as well? I marinated the chicken in a peanut sauce and the veggies in olive oil, garlic and herbs.
Served with chopped salad with goat cheese and avocado - I took the food off the skewers before I took the picture..

Dinner was salad with leftover veggies and diced sweet potatoes

<i... Sun, 2 Mar 2014 12:16:00 EST Timbale Last night we played pickle ball again, I think I'm getting the hang of a little - more hits than misses LOL Still it is a lot of fun and great exercise.

The scale finally moved but in the wrong direction. I was up half a pound this morning. We have had a stressful couple of days and it finally caught up with me. You know how you tell yourself not to stress about it... yeah, really? It's there in the back of your mind, nagging at you, even though you know you cannot do much about... Wed, 26 Feb 2014 11:31:16 EST Beyond the first 20 days I worked my way through the 20 day menu on the Plan and now I have to assemble my own menu based on what I have learned in the last 20 days. I know for sure that wheat is a major problem for me and chickpeas are a maybe. Everything else I have tested seems to be ok. I haven't tested protein and starch in the same meals yet - that is for another day.

Last week I was introduced to pickle ball, a combination of table tennis and regular tennis, played on a smaller than a tennis court w... Tue, 25 Feb 2014 12:27:12 EST Day 19 & 20 - Steak and salad The last 2 days my meals have been very similar to what I have been eating and the pictures are starting to look the same :)
Day 19 was pumpkin pudding for breakfast, steak and salad for lunch, apple and almond butter for snack and veggies and basmati rice in coco sauce for dinner.
My weight was the same the next day - still up from dinner out.
Day 20 was berry pear compote for breakfast, steak salad and broccoli for lunch, almonds for snack and salad and veggies in coco sauce ... Fri, 21 Feb 2014 12:08:18 EST Day 18 - dinner out Last night we had a wonderful evening out at a friend's house. It was fun to chat and catch up and the food was great - mostly on Plan! Salad, rice, chicken kebabs and veggie kebabs. I skipped the rice as I haven't tested rice and animal protein in the same meal yet and I wasn't going to change with so many variables, like the soy sauce marinade on the chicken and an unknown salad dressing. I skipped dessert but my splurge for the evening was a glass of Bailey's - yum!
We got home aroun... Wed, 19 Feb 2014 11:39:42 EST Day 16 & 17 - extra protein Day 16 called for a vegetarian protein at lunch and I decided the test lentil again.

Curried lentil soup with spinach:

Dinner was sauteed vegetables with salad and 3 oz of chicken

Breakfast is a rotation of the pear blueberry compote, pumpkin chia pudding or the flax seed granola with berries. I made a new... Tue, 18 Feb 2014 12:04:05 EST Day 15 - basil zucchini Yesterday I had a day on my own - always good for getting the house knocked into shape, relaxing and there are no excuses to not be on Plan.
I started with a yoga session, I love the episodes from Namaste Yoga, a canadian production which used to be on FitTV and I downloaded on my computer 4 years ago. It's easy, I play the episode on my computer and there is no need to get out of the house... you know what they say: "the hardest part about going to the gym is going to the gym".
<B... Sun, 16 Feb 2014 11:40:16 EST Day 14 - steak The day started out a little stressful. We went over the Guaymas to stock up at the big store. I always get my chicken, goat cheese and a few other bits and pieces there. Last time they didn't have goat cheese but luckily they had it back in stock but this time they were out of chicken breasts! So much for driving all that way and finding I couldn't get half of the things on my list. We ended up stopping at a local market on the way home and found some decent looking chicken breast and also a... Sat, 15 Feb 2014 12:31:02 EST Day 13 - Chicken parmesan Happy Valentine's Day !!

Yesterday was the day to test tomatoes. I did fine with them last year, so I didn't really consider it a test. I had a busy day yesterday and things didn't quite go as planned.. At the book group meeting there were cookies and almond chocolate bark. The cookies were easy to resist, the chocolate bark not so much and I had 2 pieces with my coffee over the course of the 2 hour meeting.. oops.
Breakfast had been a rather hurried affair and I didn't have ... Fri, 14 Feb 2014 11:31:58 EST Day 12 - Vegetable timbale Yesterday was another good day and I was down another 0.3 for a total of 3.6 pounds - my goal is getting closer!!

Breakfast was the flax granola with coconut cream and mixed berries

Lunch was carrot soup with the leftover vegetable from the night before and a side salad

The dinner menu called for the vegetable timbale - another favorite of mine. It's a bit more work to make but oh so good!

zucchini, cut lengthwise to resemble lasagna noodles
r... Thu, 13 Feb 2014 10:31:37 EST Day 11 - rice and veggies For 5 days my weight has stayed the same and it was quite frustrating and I was really ready to rebel but thank you spark friends for your support! I suck with the plan and went for a friendly day. Mel was repeating day 2, so I did the same - rice and veggies sounded like the comfort food I was ready for.

Breakfast was the pumpkin pudding with coconut cream

Lunch was broccoli soup and a bowl of chopped salad

Batch of chopped salad (about 3-4 portions)
<i... Wed, 12 Feb 2014 11:42:21 EST Day 9 & 10 - eggs The food for the last 2 days has been fairly similar to the previous weeks - lots broccoli, carrots and zucchini and any combination and method thinkable and the ubiquitous lettuce leaves - frankly it's starting to get a little old and dealing with monthly hormones and my weight having been stuck for 5 days now (at east no gain!) I'm tempted to rebel!! Not a good idea, so it's going to be another veggie-filled day.

Yesterday we had to test a new protein, chicken is considered frien... Tue, 11 Feb 2014 11:23:44 EST Day 8 - curried lentil soup The test for day 8 was a slice of bread but I already know that wheat is a problem for me, so I decided to test lentils instead. I had made a curried lentil soup last month and there was still a portion in the freezer.

This is the recipe I used:

06923-Indian_Spiced_Slow_Cooker_Red_Le
ntil_Soup_Recipe_with_Spinach_and_Coco
nut_Milk_Vegan_Gluten_F?return_to=%2Fr
ecipes%2Fbox

Yesterday's lunch was... Sun, 9 Feb 2014 12:17:21 EST Day 7 - veggies in coconut sauce It's been a week on the Plan and after the initial losses, I think my body is taking a little breather - I was the same this morning, no loss but no gain either :) All the food I had was on plan, no new test, but I may have skimped a little on the fluid in take. I did have my first cup of coffee in a week and it was good. Previously I had not even felt like having one, so this was nice.

Breakfast was the blueberry pear compote with coconut milk and lunch the leftover vegetables fr... Sat, 8 Feb 2014 11:05:42 EST Day 6 - steak Yesterday morning I went to the markets hoping to find a nice ribeye or NY strip steak.. no such luck :( I ended up with flank steak for my dinner and decided to stuff it with spinach, mushrooms and garlic and a little creamy goat cheese.

Then I rolled them up and secured with toothpicks and sauteed them, covering after they browned for about 3 mins.

<img src="http://photos-ak.sparkpeople.c... Fri, 7 Feb 2014 11:21:23 EST Day 4 and 5 - goat cheese On day 4 we could add goat cheese to our lunch - it was really good to have that creamy taste added to my favorite veggies but I missed my soup. Day 5 was the rye cracker test, which I have already failed, so I had half an apple with the prescribed almond butter instead.
I was down another half pound over the last 2 days for a total of 2-1/2 in 5 days and I broke through the 140 barrier :)

Lunch on day 5 salad greens with carrots, avocado and creamy goat cheese, also a bowl of... Thu, 6 Feb 2014 10:17:15 EST Day 3 - italian roasted vegetables Day 3 was another good day :) I was down a full pound this morning! So that's 2 pounds in 3 days - Happy Dance
355

I changed up breakfast and had the blueberry pear compote with a little coconut milk. I like the flax seed granola but it's nice to have a change.

Lunch was broccoli soup and a side salad

<img src=" Tue, 4 Feb 2014 12:08:44 EST Day 2 - spicy coco sauce Day 2 went well, the meals were the same as day 1 with the addition of 3/4 of brown basmati rice at dinner time and this time I didn't forget the avocado on my lunch time salad. I didn't feel as hungry as on day 1, so my body must be adjusting. It's also adjusting to the food because I was down less than the day before 0.3 which makes for a full pound over 2 days - not bad since I was stuck for a while before. Last year I lost 1.2 pounds over the first 2 days.

I was out of the spic... Mon, 3 Feb 2014 11:37:42 EST Day 1 Day 1 of the Plan went very well and I am happy to report that I am down 0.7 to 141.4 this morning. Last year I lost 0.6 on day 1 so very similar results.

Breakfast was a cup of dandelion tea and flax granola, with coconut milk and blueberries. I have to use frozen blueberries and heat them in the microwave for 1 minute. I am so jealous of my friend who found fresh blueberries (and kale!!)

... Sun, 2 Feb 2014 14:39:46 EST Getting back to the Plan Since the summer I have relaxed my eating a bit and of course I didn't maintain my weight loss from doing the Plan in the winter and spring. I am up 7 pounds and it is time to get back to basics. Mel (MELTEAGUE) and I are starting tomorrow with the 3 day cleanse and take it from there. It will be interesting to see how it goes this time around and if I react to the same foods. Ok, I know rye and wheat are still a problem... My biggest hurdle is to curb my afternoon nibbles ~ most of the time ... Fri, 31 Jan 2014 11:22:39 EST 5 years with Sparkpeople Yesterday it was 5 years ago since I signed up with Sparkpeople, although I didn't really get active on this site 3 months later.
I love all the new friends I have made, the recipes I discovered and the knowledge I have gained.
My weight is a little less than when I started and over the 5 years I have been up 10 pounds and down 10 pounds from where I am now - we live and learn :) The good thing is that I know better how to deal with set backs and am less likely to panic when the we...
