LINDA!'s SparkPeople Blog LINDA!'s Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Oh, to be 18 again!

I had lunch with a good friend yesterday. We have known one another for over 20 years. We have talked about many things through the years. One of the questions she asked me yesterday was what would you tell your 18 year old self. I am now 59. If I were 18 and had experienced what I have through the years, I would have plenty to say. Would I have made most of the decisions that I made through the years. My answer wo... Sat, 12 Apr 2014 13:58:45 EST What are your fitness goals?

It is a common thread that we have on Spark People. We all want to change our lifestyle. By doing so we make goals. Fitness goals for me have changed from year to year. I began my Spark journey in September 2007. Due to some health issues, my goals changed. How about you? What are fitness goals?

If I had to guess, I’d say these are the most common answers you’d get to this question:

•To... Wed, 26 Mar 2014 21:34:26 EST No Shame Campaign Did anyone see this on HLN this morning? I love this story. It is sad that this beautiful woman developed PCOS and gained 200 pounds in college. This would be a terrible situation for anyone. You have developed an illness and your weight just creeps up. My youngest daughter has PCOS. She has also gone through this ordeal. It is a tough disease. What I do like about this story is the self discovery that this woman has made. Most of us do discover, as we age, that we develop a love for ourselv... Sat, 8 Mar 2014 19:10:54 EST Spark support My journey with Spark People began in September 2007. My reason for joining Spark was as a weight loss site. I had no idea that there were teams of every interest to join.

It was an eye opener to see how many wonderful people are on this site. Perhaps the fact that it is virtual, I found that many people were so honest. I have also discovered a lot about myself. I really was more introverted and rarely spoke of myself. I wanted to hear more about others than to "bore them" with a... Fri, 28 Feb 2014 22:44:12 EST Mixing it up

This week has been warm on the Florida gulf coast. I have been able to exercise outdoors. Sometimes walking on the beach or other forms of cardio. Although I like to exercise outdoors, I am also using exercise videos as well. I have lost almost a 4 inches in the past 4 weeks so I know that things are working. I just need to keep working at it. Oh, if I can only get some more inches off soon, I will be so happy. ... Sun, 23 Feb 2014 23:26:40 EST #2 Turquoise Titans "I Love Myself" assignment I love myself because I am a positive person. I expect things to turn out well. This keeps me motivated to exercise and look at each day with rose color glasses. I seem to think that I am younger than my 58 years. I have a tendency to challenge myself to do new exercise routines. While I do not have the figure of a younger person, I do always work at it.

My father was a very positive person. He lived to be in his 80's. I had spoken to him the morning that he passed away. He had no... Sat, 1 Feb 2014 23:26:10 EST Is there something about you that you really love??? My Turquoise Titan Spark Team has an assignment, we are to write a blog about something we love about ourselves everyday for an entire week. This is a great challenge. Many times I think of the negative qualities. I often wish I had this quality or that quality...I compare myself against other people. It is my duty to find good qualities and love myself.

One quality I have is that I am a great listener. I started talking and listening to others at an early age. I have never been to... Fri, 31 Jan 2014 23:24:05 EST Goals I am setting goals as I continue with my challenge teams.

My first goal is to lose 30 pounds. No, this will not be done in a matter or 10 or 12 weeks. It is doable but I am planning my goal at 5 pounds at a time. For me, it is easier to set a goal at a small amount rather than overwhelming myself with thinking 30 pounds as the total goal. I don't normally set a reward as I reach a goal. Rewards don't really impress me. I am at the age that my children are raised, I am retired and i... Mon, 6 Jan 2014 21:52:13 EST I Reached My 2013 Fitness Goal

I set my 2013 fitness goal at 20,000 minutes. I have now exceeded my goal. My minutes to date are 20,217. There are 5 more days left in the year. I will have five more days of fitness to add to my goal.

For 2014 I plan to increase my goal....but I am not certain where to set it. It really is important for me to be accountable. Tracking fitness each day really motivates me to work harder.

Thu, 26 Dec 2013 21:38:14 EST Half-Off Special A challenge on my Turqouise Titans team is based upon a subject presented by Linda Spangle called the HALF-OFF SPECIAL in her book 100 Days to Weight Loss.

Our intention is to eat half of what we would normally eat. For instance, when we gather for our holiday celebrations our goal is not to eat as much as we normally world. Instead, we will eat half. This is very doable. An idea is to eat some turkey, dressing, casserole...or whatever your servings are at your event. Instead of ... Sat, 21 Dec 2013 21:25:02 EST 2013 Fitness Minutes - Very Close To My Goal

Each year I set a goal for fitness minutes. My goal for 2013 was set at 20,000 minutes of exercise. I last posted fitness minutes on 12/15/13 - the total 19,687. I am THIS CLOSE to making it to my goal by December 31.

I was just short of my goal in 2012. This year I will make it to the 20,000 goal. 104 Mon, 16 Dec 2013 11:14:56 EST A holiday beverage I like Starbucks. I also like sweet beverages, VERY MUCH. However, I like to read nutrition labels. I went through cardiac rehab after discovering a blocked artery. One of the many things I learned there was to be focused on reading labels. Saturated fat is something that we should avoid. There are various studies on this topic. You can decide that for yourself. But I will say that the calories in the holiday drinks from Starbucks, sugar and other ingredients, are at unhealthy levels. This p... Fri, 29 Nov 2013 22:44:17 EST Improvement There are many things in my life that I have no control over. But I have found that I can take control over my body and health. I love the way I feel about myself while I exercise. While I am working out, I have the image in my mind that I am younger and thinner. I think that by keeping my focus on health and strength that I have improved my quality of life. I am not at the goal weight that I want to be. But I have seen improvements in my body and lost inches. At this time, I am happy with ... Mon, 18 Nov 2013 20:37:44 EST Extra Calories

I have been slow in the weight loss game recently. In particular, this has been a rough week. We traveled to various states this week on some short trips. Well, I will say that we had a lot of fun. Just the two of us and visiting some landmarks in the southeast. The problem is, when we travel, we go to restaurants everyday. There were a few days that we ate at restaurants twice in a day. I tried to be healt... Sat, 9 Nov 2013 21:04:13 EST Do You Feel Pretty?

I was reading a blog recently. A Sparker mentioned that her physician was very direct (and cruel) by pointing out to her that she was overweight. I believe he used the dreaded word that we all hate, FAT. If we are overweight does that mean we are less than a person? To many people in today's society it does mean that. Many think anyone overweight is unattractive. It has even been something that many of us think a... Wed, 23 Oct 2013 21:35:10 EST A Slower Day I normally feel pretty well. At least enough to get in a lot of exercise. But feeling tired today with an aching stomach. It always pays to do things that you need to do earlier in the day. When you start feeling low, you can look back and realize that you did accomplish something during the day.

I will set my goals to do the same tomorrow. I expect to put in more than the 40 minutes of exercise I did today. I am setting a goal to walk and do plenty of other cardio and strength ex... Sat, 19 Oct 2013 23:12:27 EST Challenges

I really like belonging to Challenge Teams. For the past few weeks, there have been plenty of challenges. They range from eating more freggies, increasing physical exercise and sending Spark Goodies to friends. It is great.

I am already noticing a difference in my abs. Looking forward to more progress. I can't miss. Tue, 15 Oct 2013 18:45:50 EST Belly Fat I want to share this article with you. Since I am leading two Heart teams on Spark, I know how important heart disease is. I also was diagnosed with heart disease 9 years ago. I need to really work on ridding myself of belly fat. Getting rid of body fat is a problem for me.

TUESDAY, Aug. 28, 2012 (HealthDay News) — People who have a normal weight but have excess belly fat may have a higher risk of dying from heart disease than even obese individuals, researchers report.

... Sat, 28 Sep 2013 17:59:47 EST Challenge Reward I have been on Spark for many years. I have never considered a reward for reaching a goal. This is the time to do it. As I begin this round, of BLC 23, I have set my reward to be a size 10 jeans. I don't mean granny jeans. I want to have some NICE and flattering jeans. I have gone back and forth from size 10 and size 12. I know that I can fit into a 10 if I can just get 10 more pounds off.

It is irritating for me knowing that I exercise daily, drink plenty of water and eat lean ... Mon, 23 Sep 2013 22:18:42 EST BLC 23 Goals
I am very happy that I am beginning BLC 23 as an Ivory Falcon. Considering the fact that I really like to photograph birds, a falcon is a good fit for me.

I am anxious to begin the challenge next week. I have many goals. Some of the goals that I have are the same ones that I set when I joined six years ago.

> I want to lose weight. That goal is probably similar for everyone, for me 10 pounds!

> I want to make good choices. I will eat more lean meat and ... Thu, 19 Sep 2013 00:09:03 EST Thoughts of You Today was a good day. Frankly, most of the days, since I retired, are good days. No matter how good the day may be I think often of my dear parents who have left the empty chairs in my life. Many days we can think positive thoughts of the deceased. We can remember the fun and the smiles through our relationships. That is what I am choosing today.

One of your hairs fell out last night:
A piece of your life was gone without a sound.
I know a difficult day is ... Tue, 17 Sep 2013 22:31:02 EST Bits and Pieces It has been a busy couple of weeks. DD's wedding, it is a second hoopla like the first. But still...kept me busy. Flying from Ohio back to our home in Florida. YAY! Talked to doctors offices about an upcoming colonoscopy in November. (blah) Trying to organize a sleep apnea appointment that my cardiologist ordered. (blah again)

But I am feeling well and continuing to keep up with my exercise. I like walking and it is better to see scenery as I do it.

<img... Wed, 11 Sep 2013 20:36:44 EST Making Progress - Who Knew That I Could Stick With This

I have been up and down since starting Spark People in 2007. I lost weight and I gained it back.

I have been doing well for the past 2 months. I have started calorie cycling and it has been just what I needed. I lose 1 pound every week. Now many can lose much more by following this method of weight loss. My age, health and meds do not allow me to lose weight quickly. Frankly, I am happy with 1 pound pe... Fri, 16 Aug 2013 23:18:25 EST A New Zumba Friend It has been a good week. I have recently met a woman who fell down the stairs the same week in 2011 that I did. We both sustained the same broken bones in our shoulder. How odd is that! It was interesting to discuss our injuries because no one else understands. Plus, who wants to hear about it over and over anyway. As we were talking I was told that her surgeon could not rebuild her shoulder with a prosthesis. I am very thankful mine was rebuilt. Although I cannot lift my right arm above a 90... Fri, 2 Aug 2013 18:38:30 EST Remember you hold the key to your success!

I have never been the type of person that thinks anything is impossible. I may be overly optimistic at times. I believe that things will happen if I persist. However, many times I am disappointed that things I expected to happen did not. I thought that if I believed it would happen....well, then it would happen. Right? Perhaps things do not happen as we expect it to. Or that they did happen but, well, they just di... Sat, 27 Jul 2013 12:55:07 EST A lifetime friend made as we hosted our foreign exchange student. In 1995 I had two daughters, married and working full time. I stayed busy. We had an active social life which included church activities. After seeing a friend become a host parent with foreign exchange students I decided to try it once. My husband and I did not know what to expect. There are some people that have complained about the students that they received. There could be personality conflicts, etc. This was not our experience. We were happy to receive a German exchange student named ... Wed, 17 Jul 2013 00:12:09 EST Outdoor Exercise

I really enjoy outdoor exercise. One of the activities I really enjoy is water aerobics class which is near where I live, in Florida. I can walk to the class. We can have the class year round which is awesome. I enjoy the water exercise especially for range of motion since I have a shoulder replacement. Unless I am in the water, I cannot move my right arm very well.

One of my teams, Turquoise Tit... Tue, 2 Jul 2013 16:56:25 EST Don't Believe Everything You Hear I am so happy that I am an adult and have some wisdom. I have discovered that through out our lives people will discourage us. I know now that we must not believe everything that is said to us. I had a very bad self image for quite some time. As a junior in high school, I was a lazy student. I was bored with high school, bored at home...y'know some of the typical things that a teenager can go through. My parents were busy working. I was a latchkey kid along with my brother. I did not do my ho... Fri, 21 Jun 2013 21:27:58 EST A tribute to our fathers 4 years: My Daddy can do anything!
7 years: My Dad knows a lot...a whole lot.
8 years: My father does not know quite everything.
12 years: Oh well, naturally Father does not know that either.
14 years: Oh, Father? He is hopelessly old-fashioned.
21 years: Oh, that man-he is out of date!
25 years: He knows a little bit about it, but not much.
30 years: I must find out what Dad thinks about it.
35 years: Before we decide, we will get Dad's idea first... Sat, 15 Jun 2013 18:44:33 EST Good News We took our youngest daughter to the neurologist today. After her first, and only, seizure that occurred three weeks ago we are now reasonably certain that she does not have epilepsy. She had recently taken a new prescription and the doctor believes it is possible that her seizure was a side effect.

I am happy to know that he is pretty confortable that she will be okay. She will follow up with him on occasion. I am thankful for answered prayers. So many of you have been so suppor... Wed, 5 Jun 2013 11:22:17 EST I am encouraged

I have mentioned in previous blogs that I love to join challenges. If I follow challenge teams, I will stay with them and see progress. I need the structure of challenges. I had been rather discouraged in the past few weeks that I had stayed the same weight. But this evening I looked back to February 2013 and realized that I was 7 pounds heavier. Many people lose more than that in a month. However, I am in my late... Sat, 1 Jun 2013 22:23:57 EST A quick blog and a prayer request What a day....I drove my daughter to a doctor's appointment because she was dizzy and nauseated all weekend. We were driving her car and of course, she had to tell me how to drive all of the way there. After all, she is 25 and knows much more than her mother who has driven 40 years. lol I then drove her to work since she felt ill. I was back at home and 3 hours later received a call from a co-worker that she was in a seizure, vomiting, etc. in her office. OMG, that scared me. She has never ha... Sat, 11 May 2013 11:40:07 EST Negative choices I really like the quote I have listed about cheeseburgers. It describes how I lived my life for so many years. The cheeseburgers, pizzas, etc. really were a day to day problem. I went to Jazzercise for years. It was great fun to me. But I was not losing weight. Now that I look back I realize that in spite of the hour long classes I went to a few times per week, I had not changed my eating habits. Sat, 30 Mar 2013 12:47:49 EST Seeing Progress I was very happy to have my monthly weight and measurements taken on Friday at Curves. I really have been watching my calorie count closely. I daily complete the nutrition and fitness trackers. I am interested in reviewing my fat intake as well as sodium, protein, etc. I must say that I did have success. I lost 1 pound...but I am happiest with my NSV loss of 5" overall. Now I may not be able to do this every month, but I will certainly continue to follow the same steps.

<img src=... Life was easy so easy as a child. I would ride a bike, jump rope (I don't think kids jump rope anymore. Why?) or sit on the porch with friends.
