LIBRARIANJEN's SparkPeople Blog LIBRARIANJEN's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Argh Trying to get to the place where you add a blog entry is SUCH a pain. I'll be blogging my fitness at
. I just don't have the time to sit and click and try to figure out where they hid the blog button.

I had a blog entry all thought out, but lost it in my annoyance at the bad design. Sat, 30 Jul 2011 00:56:08 EST Back at it I'm happy to report that I'm back at it-- motivated to go for another 20 pounds or so. I've cut out pop and have ramped up salad intake and my exercise.

My current exercise plans are pre-training for the Austin half. Right now, I'm just trying to get my running base back after taking a couple of months off due to extreme heat. I'm run/walking every other day with my black dog. These are short runs because the heat is way too hard on her, even though we run after dark.

bronchitis/pneumonia thing several of my friends have had in the past few months.

It's getting old.

I'm antsy to run. I'm going to try a quick, short run tomorrow morning before heading to a birthday party in Kansas. I know I don't have to worry about overeating-- I'll likely be the only vegan there-- but I'm bring hummus (YUM!), chips, and a veggie tray.

Oh, my Dad is now on SP!! Welcome, Dad! Sat, 24 Apr 2010 01:15:57 EST Coughing Run Did a short run today (Wednesday) mostly because Blackie the dog needed it! My son and I went to the Capitol and back. He biked and I ran. Despite my cough, I got to the Capitol 30 seconds faster than I ever had. I walked back, though.

If I feel up to it tomorrow, I'm going to do the same run with Blackie. I'm trying to push myself just a little bit harder on my runs. One thing I learned in my DNF is that I can currently run 10 miles at a consistent 12-minute/mile pace. Not ... Thu, 22 Apr 2010 02:15:32 EST Sick. Yuck. I'm antsy to get running again, but I'm sick. Last week, we all got the cold that seems to be going around. Mostly a sore throat and coughing, but for me, between my asthma and my lowered immunity from the marathon attempt, I'm trying to be careful. I'm hoping to start running again Wednesday, if I've stopped coughing by then. It didn't help that this weekend I stayed at a local "resort," where I was helping with a presentation. The place was so nasty. Both my roommate and I woke up ear... Tue, 20 Apr 2010 02:26:38 EST Registered for Green Bay! I'm registered for Green Bay! I don't have a lot of time to adjust my training very much, but I am going to work on running faster over the next few weeks. If it weren't for my sore left toe, I'd be ready to run right now, but I'm giving it a few more days to feel better. I think I'm going to lose that nail.

I'm going to use SP's food tracking to make sure I get my calories up. I think I averaged 1300-1500 calories a day while training (not on purpose) and that's not nearly eno... Fri, 16 Apr 2010 00:18:07 EST The Plot Thickens I'm getting more upset about my DNF by the day. More than 30 people finished after 6:15 (clock) including one who finished AFTER seven hours. When we found out they allowed more than 30 people to cross after the finish line was supposedly closed, my husband called them. They told him no one told me to get off the course. Which was a lie. He was right there when the official told me to leave.

I went into the marathon knowing about the time limit, but I didn't know it would t... Wed, 14 Apr 2010 18:10:16 EST Run Report and Lessons Learned Well, I have collected another DNF at the St. Louis marathon. It was a nice course and a good crowd, but I ran out of time and they threw me off the course.

My friend and I got to the starting area just before 6am. We wandered a bit and talked about how excited we were. The portapotties near the front were RANK-- they made me gag. We hung out with my DH until about 6:30, when we headed back to the slow runners area. The potties were more tolerable, so we got in line and did ou... Tue, 13 Apr 2010 23:06:32 EST Two more days! I'm so excited! Sunday is the marathon! My stomach has not been happy the past couple of days-- I think it's the excitement. I have to calm down. Friday, we're taking Blackie to the dog park to make up for the lack of long runs.

I think my fall marathon will be the San Antonio Rock and Roll marathon in November. That gives me plenty of time to get on a really good, consistent training program. Thu, 8 Apr 2010 01:49:50 EST My Dog is Annoyed I haven't run since Tuesday (a GREAT 5.5-miler) and my dog finally let me know today that she needs to run more! She tore up my bedspread-- this is the first thing she has destroyed since we started running. She definitely needs to run more. What better motivational coach?

I'm running 8 miles tomorrow, then just short runs during the week, to keep Blackie from destroying things and to keep my legs "sharp." (I laugh, because as a slow marathoner, I can hardly claim to have "shar... Sun, 4 Apr 2010 03:44:37 EST Two Weeks to Go! (LOOONG) (First, I have to wonder why SP makes it so difficult and confusing to get to this page? They would really benefit from web usability studies.)

Two weeks to go until the St. Louis marathon! I can't believe I'm really going to do it! Yesterday I did my longest long run. Only 16 miles, but I started my training about a month late, so I'm okay with that. I would like to have been able to do an 18 and a 20, but this time, my goal is just to finish. (Okay, to finish around 5:20, w... Tue, 30 Mar 2010 06:38:35 EST It's been a while! I didn't realize how long it's been since I last posted! Since then, I've finished my PhD and started training for a marathon (St. Louis in April). I've been running with friends on the weekend and running on my own during the week with one of my dogs. I always forget how much I love to run. I'm a little sore and tired, though.

Weight-wise, I only have about 22 pounds to go before I'm back to what I consider my "normal" weight. People are finally starting to notice that I have... Mon, 1 Feb 2010 23:37:44 EST Some good, some bad The past couple of weeks have been strange and busy. I've been working full-tilt on my dissertation. I need to have a decent draft done by August 15.

Also, during TKD class a couple weeks ago, I got a deep muscle bruise on my shin/calf while sparring (I don't have gear yet, but believe me, after that, I will not spar without gear!) That means my daily 5-mile walks have been on hold, since the impact hurts. I have been walking the dogs around the block every night and working ... Mon, 27 Jul 2009 03:19:57 EST Eating- Double Post Double post. Thu, 9 Jul 2009 02:10:10 EST Eating Our son is away at a summer camp this week. Dh and I are making plans to have better mealtime habits when he comes back this weekend. We all tend to be snackers and eat in the living room. We're going to try to get back to eating at the dining room table.

Something else I need to work on is spreading my eating out through the day. I have a very bad habit of eating nothing until dinner, then having an entire Chipotle veggie bowl (without cheese and sour cream, of course, but wit... Thu, 9 Jul 2009 02:09:42 EST Fat Acceptance or Body Acceptance? I've been thinking about fat acceptance-- accidentally stumbled across some fat acceptance blogs the other day and spent hours reading them. I'm having mixed feelings about the whole thing. For one thing, I still don't believe that this is the weight I should be. Through most of my 20s, except when I was pregnant and nursing, I weighed between 138 and 145 pounds. I didn't hit 170 until we moved to the States, and that was pretty sudden and dramatic. It was the lifestyle change-- I went fr... Tue, 7 Jul 2009 17:28:44 EST Back from summer camp My son and I got back from Boy Scout summer camp this morning. I'm sooooo tired and sore! It rained the first two days, so my feet were constantly wet and I ended up getting bad blisters. On the other hand, I was more fit than I was last year, so other than the blisters, I feel pretty good. Every year after summer camp, I vow that I will get into better shape. This year, I think things are in place for this to actually happen. We're going to try to add in a weekend hike. I'm looking fo... Sat, 20 Jun 2009 21:15:59 EST Struggling with SP I'm having a hard time visiting SP lately, simply because all of the new "features" crash my browser. Sigh. But I am still exercising and I'm trying to log my food as much as possible. I'm definitely eating too many calories. It might only be a couple hundred extra a day, but it's keeping me fat.

I'm up to four miles on the treadmill, aiming for every day. I'm also about to start week 3 of Cathe Friedrich's STS endurance series (weights).

I'm trying not to get disco... Fri, 12 Jun 2009 03:56:05 EST About to go run on the treadmill I'm spending some time on SparkPeople before hitting the treadmill tonight. Tonight is a four-mile walk-run. I'm going to try to speed up a little.

For dinner, I had delicious broccoli and yellow rice. Only one bowl. DH dished it up for me... he has a tendency to over-serve. But we're working on that.

I've posted a couple of old and very bad pictures of me from 2007 and 2008. 2007, I think, was when I hit my top weight, 201. The picture makes me cringe when I see i... Sun, 7 Jun 2009 23:06:55 EST Goal, I has one Back from Canada, where I walked a lot and didn't have much Internet.

My health and self-image have been struggling a bit recently. I've been having trouble feeling good about how I look. I know that being happy with myself is one key to feeling motivated to be healthier, but I feel unattractive. I'm working on being cuter, "fake it until you make it," and that kind of thing. Realistically, though, I will feel better about how I look when I don't feel so shapeless.

I... Sat, 6 Jun 2009 02:33:35 EST Monday It's another Monday; another weird weigh-in. 177. That's okay-- I'm still exercising, drinking water, and trying to get my veggies in. Tonight was a treadmill "run": 3:30 in 53 minutes. Watching Dollhouse, of course. Tue, 26 May 2009 02:07:16 EST Still insomniac, but enjoying exercise I'm so happy to be exercising again. Although I've always struggled with my weight (or my perception of my weight, at times), I've always liked to be active. (I just never realized it, because I also loved to read.) I biked, hiked, ran, and played all through school (but I hated PE, so I thought I was some kind of slug.) I was a runner as a young adult, then when my kids were younger, I enjoyed going for walks and doing exercise tapes.

A few years ago, I lost it-- got out of sh... Sat, 23 May 2009 01:04:29 EST Another good workout (I'm up too late-- sigh.)

Today we had a great Tae Kwon Do class. We're still working on our new pattern. We were both exhausted at the end. I also did an incline treadmill walk. (2.86 in 51, watching Dollhouse "Stage Fright.") I've been trying to get more activity to help with my insomnia, so I hope this helps. I hope just being physically tired will make a difference. Fri, 22 May 2009 02:33:24 EST Week One Update, in the middle of week 2! I got a more realistic weight Tuesday morning, but haven't logged in until today to post it. Tuesday morning's weight was 175.5, down 1.4 pounds.

I'm so happy to be exercising again! Tonight, I did a 50-minute treadmill walk/run. 3.05 miles. I was watching Dollhouse (ep 2) and realized that running on the treadmill is perfect when watching those high-adrenaline scenes.

I also did my yoga/Pilates. Still can't do the neck pull.

I'm eating slightly less, mo... Wed, 20 May 2009 22:23:35 EST Week One? Well, my weigh-in today was weird-- 179.4. That seems odd, so I'm not "counting" it unless it's the same tomorrow.

Today's exercise was a 50-minute treadmill walk, pyramiding the incline up to 6 and then back down. 2.75 miles total. I also did my yoga and Pilates exercises.

Got my veggies and water today. Tue, 19 May 2009 00:32:14 EST End of week 1 It is the end of week one of the biggest winner challenge. I was too busy Friday and too busy slacking Saturday to check in, but I think all I managed on those two days were getting enough water and getting in my fruits and veggies.

Today, I got in my exercise and I'm checking in now. I just got off the treadmill. 2.86 in 49 minutes. I'm still having trouble with it slipping. I replaced the end cap a while back and I guess it's going to take some time to get it perfect again. ... Mon, 18 May 2009 00:46:54 EST Up too late My sleep schedule has been all messed up lately, partly because of a stomach bug that I was fighting off. I'm up way too late. But we did make it to Tae Kwon Do tonight and had a great class. We're learning our new pattern. I also walked on the treadmill for 40 minutes while listening to an old Vegan Freaks podcast. I also did my Pilates and Yoga. I'm kind of "stuck" on Pilates because the next move (Neck Pull) should only come once I master the roll-up. I'm working on it.

I... Fri, 15 May 2009 02:48:30 EST May Winner Challenge Points (Monday and Tuesday) I need to keep track of my biggest winner challenge points. I'm going to post for Monday and Tuesday here:

1. Participation!
Yay! Yes, I participated Monday and Tuesday- 2 points

2. Eat a HEALTHY Breakfast!
Yes-- I've started making raw smoothies. 2 points

3. Water!
Yes. I love water, so this one is pretty easy. 2 points

4. Listening To Your Hunger!
Yes- two points. I've been packing portion-controlled bento boxes for lunch... Wed, 13 May 2009 16:31:47 EST Lost a pound Despite my effort to focus on being healthy and not worrying too much about numbers on the scale, I've been happy all day because I lost a pound! I've been working hard on eating smaller portions (I can be a compulsive overeater and I tend to eat more than I really need.)

I'm not logging my food in the tracker today because it doesn't have my recipes and it would take hours to add them, but today I had a

soy latte (homemade)
a fruit smoothie (blueberries, mangoes... Mon, 11 May 2009 22:37:34 EST Treadmill I did a treadmill workout tonight! A total of three miles in 50 minutes. I watched the last half of Torchwood Episode "Small Worlds" and then I did the first part of OKGo's Master the Treadmill workout. Good workout! I'm glad I did it. I'm going to do my Pilates and Yoga later tonight, before bed.

I haven't planned this week's menus yet. Monday and Tuesday are good, because I had so much food last week that I didn't even use the meals I had planned for Thursday and Friday. T... Sun, 10 May 2009 21:15:24 EST Catching Up Things have been going very well for me-- but things have also been very busy. I have been doing well with pre-planning my meals. I pack cute little lunches in my bento box. I just finished my second week of planned meals. I need to come up with a healthy, quick, delicious breakfast, though.

I do get to go to Italy in September. I'd really like to lose about 15 pounds before then.

Allergies have been a pain lately. I've been staying inside-- but that means I need... Sun, 10 May 2009 02:57:18 EST Oh, those food issues again... For a while now, as you know, I have suspected that I shouldn't eat wheat. However, since I am also convinced I am a hypochondriac, I don't always trust my instincts about my health. This is a long way of saying that I ate a lot of wheat last week and I am really suffering for it. My rosacea flared up badly this week and Saturday I had terrible bloating and noises. So embarrassing! Hopefully, no one heard it.

I'm trying to get the strength up to commit to a very healthy diet ... Mon, 6 Apr 2009 01:36:03 EST Getting Back on Track Since my last post, I've been back to Tae Kwon Do class twice. I'm feeling more normal, though still coughing-- it's driving me nuts! My husband and I are testing for our green belt on Thursday. I'm very excited. I managed to practice my kicks and patterns today.

My calories are still all over the place. Seems I'm either over or under my range. I am going to focus on being more consistent with calories and more consistent with daily TKD practice.

I would also like ... Mon, 9 Mar 2009 22:21:48 EST Trying to get back on track I haven't exercised yet, but I think I might have stopped coughing long enough. Tomorrow, I'm going to try to do a Cathe DVD. I hope it works out. I feel so lazy. Sat, 28 Feb 2009 22:26:17 EST Small Plate My husband, who works for the health department, told me today about an initiative called the "Small Plate Movement" (which is probably copywrited and trademarked to death, so I probably shouldn't even say it out loud.) The challenge is to eat your largest meal off a smaller plate for a month. I think I'm going to take it on (even though I already try to eat off a smaller plate.)

I'm also giving up coffee for Lent. This really means I'm giving up soy lattes for Lent. I'm having... Tue, 24 Feb 2009 19:07:43 EST About to head into the world again I cocooned myself in the house all weekend, guzzling Theraflu and crocheting. I still feel woozy and thanks to the asthma, I'm having breathing problems, but I'm going to try to go to Tae Kwon Do tomorrow night. I might have to scale back for a couple of classes.

I saw something on the news about Vitamin D and asthmatics and colds and flus, so now I need to make even more sure that I get enough Vitamin D.

I'm so tired. And I'm annoyed at all the time I lost. But I ne... Mon, 23 Feb 2009 22:25:24 EST Why Does This Always Happen? So, I was feeling good, weight-training, even getting ready to run again, and now I have a cold. It's one of those icky ones that includes a headache, fever, sore throat, and cough. It started Wednesday night. I missed Tae Kwon Do last night and I missed a concert tonight and I'll probably miss another concert tomorrow night. Sigh. I feel like dirt. Now I'll need to get back to exercising at half-strength before I can get back to where I was. Fri, 20 Feb 2009 23:29:23 EST Feeling Fitter Today's Tae Kwon Do class was really fun-- we sparred! I'm getting better, but I need to work on kicking with my left leg. I tend to use my right instep in a turning kick the most. We're about to join USTF. That's pretty exciting, because it means we could be two years away from 1st dan (black belt.) I feel like we're getting fitter. I think it helps that Miss Maggie, our Lhasa Apso, insists on a walk every day, so we're getting out more.

Today was also a good day eating-wise... Tue, 17 Feb 2009 21:30:56 EST Wow, I Really Need to Track! This weekend, we went out to celebrate our 15th Valentine's Day together. I drank 2500 calories!!! I like silly girly drinks-- beer and wine give me headaches. I'm very much against the idea of feeling guilty about what I eat or drink, but I do need to be more careful, especially since I have decided to attempt the Des Moines Half Marathon in October (two days before my 38th birthday.) I have to log what I'm eating so I don't have stomach problems.

After I post this, I'm going ... Mon, 16 Feb 2009 18:02:44 EST Getting Closer to Running I think I'm getting closer to being able to go running. I'm still working on that hip. Tomorrow, I'm going to try to fit in a Cathe leg workout (Meso Disc 3) before the big Valentine date.

I did my prep for running "rehab" exercises again today. That's two days in a row! Like I said, I really want to get back into running and I really want to train for and run in a marathon. I think if I were cautious and careful, I could run a half in the fall. I'm not going to set that as... Sat, 14 Feb 2009 00:42:56 EST Motivated I'm happy that I'm more motivated now. Tae Kwon Do class was good tonight. I'm also working on physical therapy type exercises so I can start running soon. I did a little routine today that included my foam roller and my BOSU. Some of the exercises came from Runner's World.

I'm also trying to log my food intake a bit better. I really want to be healthier and feel better. Thu, 12 Feb 2009 23:59:38 EST Feeling Good! I got my Cathe DVDs last week and have now done two of the DVDs. I can't quite fit them in as planned yet, since Wednesdays, I have no time to work out and I don't want to do anything too intense on Tuesdays and Thursdays (Tae Kwon Do class.) I'm still working that out. It's a great set, though, and I think it will really help my muscle endurance. (Right now, I have neither endurance nor strength. I actually miss the endurance more!)

Our new little dog has been making us walk ... Tue, 10 Feb 2009 02:14:44 EST Cathe DVDs Due Today! I have to go to the other city and get new running shoes, since my trusty Nikes gave me a massive blister in Denver last week. I'm sending them off to Goodwill (I think the toe area of my feet are wider now than they used to be.) At the same time, I want to stay here and wait for UPS to deliver my new Cathe STS series! I'm so excited! My asthma seemed a lot better before I went to Denver (I did have a setback last week thanks to the altitude and lack of oxygen) but I think I'm doing a lot... Fri, 30 Jan 2009 14:06:53 EST Old Intro Text

I'm back from a hiatus. I took some time off from obsessively watching my weight. I probably will continue to maintain a somewhat relaxed approach, but I will try to weigh once a week or so. I'm getting ready for the new semester and starting my running program back up. It would be terrific to lose 10 pounds by Christmas, but it's okay if I don't.

I was not always overweight, but I always believed I was. In about 2000, my body started reflecting the way I had alway... Wed, 31 Dec 2008 01:43:48 EST One Day Closer to My Goals I logged my food today-- what a great tool for really seeing where you are! It's weird-- I really don't eat as much as I think I do. My real problem is, of course, that I drink my calories in the form of soda and cappuccino. But I haven't had soda since Wednesday. I need to start a new streak! Unfortunately, I've been fighting off a cold and I haven't done yoga in three days. Sat, 20 Dec 2008 01:53:05 EST Grow Up I spent much of this afternoon trying to find a pair of indigo bootcut low to mid-rise jeans that look cute on me. I was fitting into 12P or 14P, depending on the level of vanity sizing involved (20 years ago, this would be a size 16.) The problem is, nothing looked cute. The ones that looked good from the waist-band down gave me a terrible muffin top, and the ones that didn't give me muffin top were baggy in the crotch. I definitely don't want to resort to Mom Jeans-- I like to think I'm... Thu, 18 Dec 2008 03:49:55 EST McDougall I've been going through a serious Chipotle and Soy Latte phase lately, but that has to end now. Right now, there's not a lot of food in the house for me (I'm the only vegan in my house), so I'm going to use this opportunity to restart the McDougall Maximum Weight Loss program.

I'm getting tested for allergies on Wednesday. I'm asking for a celiac screening. I definitely have some kind of problem with wheat. I've been eating wheat to prepare for the screening, so I haven't been ... Sat, 22 Nov 2008 21:52:46 EST Energy After my last post, on food allergies, two major things happened. I started Tae Kwon Do with an awesome club in my town and I was diagnosed with asthma. It's been difficult to get back into running, but I realize it's really important to start running so that my TKD can improve. I'm a 7th gup (in our school, that's green stripe on yellow belt. The next rank is green belt.)

I'm getting older, and that means I have to stop being so careless with my health. I have to start sleepi... Sun, 2 Nov 2008 21:44:38 EST Food Allergies Today, I had a chance to meet up with fellow sparkers from my Master's program and we got to talking about food allergies. After I got home, I decided to do some research. I had been thinking about trying a gluten elimination diet. I've been vegan for almost a year, and I still have some problems that I think are connected to food.

I discovered that some of my chronic problems (anemia/iron deficiency, cracks at the corner of the mouth, mouth sores, eczema and various other skin ... Mon, 1 Oct 2007 01:40:45 EST About 172 I think my weight is about 172 right now. I haven't weighed in a while. I'm wearing size 14 and size 12 shorts now, though the size 12s are a bit loose. I do hope beginning my running program again will help that.

I had to stop bellydance class because it conflicted with Scouts. I miss it, but I'm having great fun with the scouts. I might even be doing the hiking badge, so I really need to step it up. I want to be a good influence. Wed, 15 Aug 2007 03:33:29 EST
