Not only can't I exercise for who knows how long (shoot, hard enough hobbling around the house), but I have to eat constantly throughout the day because of the NSAIDS and Prednisone I have to take multiple times daily. Between the steroids, no exercise, and much more food, I'm going to ... Wed, 19 Sep 2012 15:08:59 EST Tips for making healthy eating easier http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5058930 How many of you reach for the wrong foods when you're in a hurry, just because it's easily accessible? I know I do, and I'm not nearly as busy as most people (just lazy!).

I've found a couple of ways that even a lazy person can make better food choices throughout the day. Cutting up veggies, making individual hamburger patties, a quick oatmeal breakfast ... what other ideas can you come up with?

Visit me at
fitinmy50s.blogspot.com/2012/09/make
-healthy-food-p... Fri, 14 Sep 2012 10:51:10 EST Late start, but got 'er done http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5058365 I had hoped to get my workout done earlier in the day, but I wasn't able to pull it off. I managed to get my walk/jog in by early evening and did about :32 or so, but the jog is killing me on this road. Time to get in the car and scope out other locations, as I can't walk along the main county road here.

Well within limits on food intake again today, so I'm hoping I see the scale start to move again (been stagnant, or up and down the same pound or two for several days now).
... Thu, 13 Sep 2012 22:59:04 EST I shouldn't have planned for an off day http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5056733 I thought I was going to take the day off from working out today, or at least from training towards the 5K walk/jog, but I think I ended up doing more than if I had just gone and done it.

:30 Recumbent bike
:27 Walk three dogs (separately, but only for a short time each)
:15 Walk this evening before winding down for the day

Here's how my "I'm not going to work out today" day went:

fitinmy50s.blogspot.com/2012/09/when
-is-day-off-from-train... Wed, 12 Sep 2012 21:18:12 EST Do you wear the same shoes when walking and running? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5055898 I just recently started out again walking more often, and have added a bit of a jog into the routine as I prepare for the virtual 5K walk/jog at the end of Oct. I didn't bother with running shoes yet because the jog portion of my training was only very short distances at this point, but boy, was it tough. With the extra weight I'm carrying around, I could barely lift my feet off the ground and it actually felt like I was going slower at the jog than when I was walking. Enough of that!
... Wed, 12 Sep 2012 11:17:37 EST Hula Hoop Hilarity http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5053393 I was a pro with a hula hoop as a kid, so I couldn't resist picking one up today to give it another whirl. What was I thinking? This stuff is harder than it looks!

After looking around, I found that my cheap-o dollar store purchase isn't really worth the buck I spent, not for someone of my age and girth trying to use it for exercise.

I'll need to try something else if I want to return to my childhood. Mon, 10 Sep 2012 21:23:30 EST Do you follow a training plan? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5052139 If you're just starting out on the road to fitness, training plans can be an important tool to use on your journey. I picked one that I think is right for me, but there are loads of them out there and there should be one that's just right for you too.

I got ahead of myself on my current training plan without realizing it, so need to back up and stay with the program.

I discuss more about training plans in general and what I'm doing in my journal at the link below.
... Mon, 10 Sep 2012 08:51:36 EST Great week! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5051599 I'm still journaling my training workouts for the Trick or Treat Trot virtual 5K. I just started this week, but it was a good one, and I also did well with food and overall motivation. My weekend workout is posted at the link below.

fitinmy50s.blogspot.com/2012/09/week
end-workout-wrap-up.html
Sun, 9 Sep 2012 21:08:41 EST Calculate Those Calories Burned! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5050671 I track everything here on SP, but it's nice to have something that will take into account my weight to get a more true picture of what I'm really burning when I exercise. I found these neat calculators that will do that, and I've posted them on my journal at the link below.

fitinmy50s.blogspot.com/2012/09/calc
ulate-calories-burned-more.html
Sun, 9 Sep 2012 08:25:13 EST Rest Day Turns into Dog Days http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5049945 I was going to take yesterday as a day of rest, but while I ended up not doing much, it still didn't go quite as planned. Sat, 8 Sep 2012 16:26:24 EST Training for the 5K http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5048442 Another good day yesterday for both food and fitness. I did my first day of the 5K training suggested here on SparkPeople, walking for 4 min, then jogging for 1, repeating until 25 min are completed. It wasn't pretty, but I did it!

More info on my blog that is going to journal my path to fitness (link below). I'll be adding more topics soon that I hope others will find helpful. Fri, 7 Sep 2012 11:30:39 EST Start of my 5K training http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5047744 Yesterday was a good day for both food and fitness. I stayed within all (I think) nutritional guidelines, and got out for a good bit of exercise trying to map out a course for the upcoming virtual 5K. I thought I might have overdone it, but I felt good when I was done, and still feel good today, so I'm not going to worry about it.

I've chronicled my day on my new blog (link below). I hope you'll follow along on my journey.

fitinmy50s.blogspot.com/2012/09/trai<B... Thu, 6 Sep 2012 21:51:30 EST Going on Record http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5047256 Now I've done it.

I've got several blogs on other niche topics, but I wanted a place where I could chronicle my day to day activities, as well as share tips and tricks, things I've come across in my journey towards fitness that might not be appropriate for this SparkPeople blog. The result is a brand new blog just started moments ago.

I'll still be posting here on the SparkPeople blog, but will probably expound more on the other. I hope you check it out and follow al... Wed, 5 Sep 2012 18:33:32 EST Good Day Today http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5044295 I've had a good day so far.

Oatmeal with cinnamon and brown sugar for breakfast (Cooked, NOT from a package)
Walked the dogs for about 20 min
Lunch of chicken salad with only one slice of bread
30 min on the recumbent bike
5 min working my arms with 3lb weights (I HATE strength training/working with weights)
Cheddar cheese for snack

I've got some chicken breasts left in the fridge from when I baked a whole package the other day, so I'm debating... Tue, 4 Sep 2012 16:51:54 EST Making a Commitment - Again http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5042840 After losing over 50 lbs a couple of years ago, here I am again. I started out a couple of months ago at only 1 lb less than my highest weight ever before starting the low-carb diet, which was very successful -- until I succumbed to temptation. No more.

I have good days and bad days with food, some days doing very well, and other days stuffing my face with everything I can get my hands on.
