LCERVERA's SparkPeople Blog LCERVERA's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Summer Fun Well, today it's back to reality around our house, or at least our summer reality. My husband was off for two weeks and we had a great time. The first week, we just did a "staycation" and went to the local beach, ate out a lot, and generally enjoyed being home. Here are a few pictures:

Then, we the second week we went out to Montauk (the end of L... Mon, 21 Jul 2014 07:24:20 EST Taking It to the Streets (and the Yard!) The best time of year for me-the beginning of the summer! Although I've been off from my part-time teaching job since mid-May, due to an illness in my family, I haven't really been doing my usual summer stuff. I have been exercising, though. This past weekend, I got to really enjoy the outdoors. It was my daughter's 15th birthday, so we took her and her friends to Fire Island (a barrier beach with little shops and restaurants only accessible by boat) for the day. it was gorgeous. <img ... Tue, 24 Jun 2014 10:06:58 EST Spin Instructor Training: Done! Yesterday I spent 9 hours on a GORGEOUS Saturday attending a Spin Instructor training at a gym about 30 minutes away. A friend did it along with me, so that made it more fun! We got there at 8:15AM, protein bars and healthy lunches in tow. A friend of mine who is already certified through this company (the "original," Spinning) said not to worry, they never actually keep you the whole day. Actually, my instructor took this all very seriously, and kept us late! We didn't get home until 6:... Sun, 18 May 2014 17:51:09 EST Pics from 5K My other pics wouldn't attach to my blog, so here they are (I hope!) Sun, 11 May 2014 20:39:32 EST Mother's Day 5K! Today was the Mother’s Day 5K that is in honor of a young law student who died from an undiagnosed heart condition. It was a GORGEOUS day, sunny and beautiful, which was very welcome after a week of clouds, rain, and chilly temps. My husband came with his camera, and my two daughters were nice enough to get out of bed early on a Sunday to cheer me on! As I lined up, I went around the 9 minute people (signs told you where to line up), since I was expecting to be at around a 9:30 pace, give ... Sun, 11 May 2014 20:34:58 EST My Third 5K Tomorrow! I'm really excited that tomorrow, Mother's Day, will be my third 5K Race. The cool part is that my first ever 5K race was last Mother's Day. I started running at the end of March last year, just due to stress, and found out that I loved it. My time hasn't improved all that much. I think last year I did it in right around 30 minutes, and I did a race in September where I was like 28 and change. I don't really think I can get below that, but maybe the excitement of the crowd and the adrena... Sat, 10 May 2014 08:31:54 EST Yikes! Taking the Plunge! I've been thinking about getting Spin certified (to teach) for a while now. I really enjoy Spin, and it is a great workout. I do it about twice-three times a week, although I found I had to back off a bit and mix in running and other cardio to stop my thighs/hips from getting too big! I have a friend who teaches and she's been encouraging me to go for it. Well, my friend and I both teach English as a Second Language at a community college, and we organized a Spinathon to raise money for s... Thu, 1 May 2014 15:43:37 EST Mango Madness Smoothie I don't know if this is blogworthy, but I just finished the yummiest smoothie ever and thought I'd share it. For one tall glass, I used 1/2 a mango, 1/2 a banana, 1/2 a small container of plain Greek yogurt, about 1/4 cup of Almond Coconut (unsweetened) milk, and about three or four ice cubes. Yummmmm! Definitely satisfies that sweet tooth and gives a little protein boost from the yogurt.
Have a great day, everybody! 274 Mon, 17 Feb 2014 14:39:05 EST Spaghetti Fake-Out I try to avoid flour and sugar as much as I can, which is the eating plan I've been following for over two years. Now that I am on maintenance, though, I will have it once in a while. I have noticed that my weight is starting to creep up a bit (I was actually just outside my maintenance "happy range" today but I'm waiting for Friday to update my ticker!) so I'm reining myself in again, going back to what I know works with a bit more of a vengeance until I get back to the bottom of my five p... Tue, 11 Feb 2014 17:31:37 EST Facilitated My First Workout Class! Thanks to everyone who cheered me on yesterday about leading my first exercise class today! Sparkpeeps are the nicest peeps! We met today, and I really didn't think we would have more than about four people, since we are a very new group and not attached to a gym or anything. We had 9 or 10 women there, and I think everyone really enjoyed it! I am so grateful to God for being able to pass along the joy I've found in working out, and especially the connection I feel to God while I'm doing ... Sat, 8 Feb 2014 11:34:32 EST Another First! Tomorrow, I'm starting something new. I'm going to be facilitating an aerobics/strength training class called Faithful Workouts. I've been doing the DVD and TV show for close to two years now, and I suggested that we gather some people together who want to work out. We are holding it at a conference center for a men's ministry that my husband works with, and this workout group is part of a women's ministry group that I am a part of. I can't believe I'll be semi-"leading" this group! (Act... Fri, 7 Feb 2014 18:51:22 EST A Very Scary Biggest Loser I don't watch The Biggest Loser very often, but I did want to catch the finale last night. I was so inspired by seeing the contestants who had been kicked off come back and show how much work they had done at home to keep losing. I really felt like we were all "riding the same bus," like they would have fit right in here on Sparkpeople, with the emphasis on healthy eating, exercise and positive lifestyle changes. However, when Rachel came out (who eventually won) I was really shocked and, ... Wed, 5 Feb 2014 07:04:56 EST Stop Dragging My Heart (Monitor) Around I'm really getting into adding a little technology to my workouts. When I run on the treadmill, I like to do intervals and vary the speed according to the song, and even within a song. Each verse I'll go a little faster, then bring it down, then crank it for the chorus, etc. I got up to 6.4mph yesterday. I remember a few years ago when 3.5 was my default setting. My husband got me Bluetooth earbuds so when I'm at the gym (as opposed to having a stereo in the basement), I'm no longer teth... Thu, 23 Jan 2014 19:44:01 EST Feeling Happy! Today I felt really great during Spin class. I've been doing Spin for almost exactly a year. When I started, it was all I could do to sit on the bike for the whole hour and keep moving my feet around on the pedals. I couldn't do the jumps, runs, climbs, etc. Little by little, by doing it twice a week and doing other cardio pretty much 6 or 7 days a week, I can now do the whole class and all the "tricks." I love it and I sweat like in no other activity! Today, the gym was crowded (the Ne... Thu, 9 Jan 2014 10:03:02 EST About a Year of Maintenance
(Top picture, I'm on the far right, obviously "Before." Bottom picture, 8/13, "After.")

I just realized recently that I started my new plan right after Thanksgiving, two years ago. I remember sitting around the table after Thanksgiving dinner, feeling tired, bloated and basically disgusted! I didn't have much energy and got very little acti... Sat, 9 Nov 2013 08:06:02 EST Less of Me On Vacation We got back two weeks ago from Hawaii. We took the kids and were there for two wonderful weeks! Although my husband and I would have loved to just hang out on the gorgeous beach every day, the kids (17 and 14) wanted to actually DO stuff! Unlike when I was there a couple of years ago, I did some things that were definitely out of my comfort zone, like horseback-riding a very ornery horse up a mountain trail, hiking up to t... Wed, 14 Aug 2013 21:10:42 EST Grateful I have that song going through my head: "It's the most wonderful time of the year..." For me, this is a really unique time since I am finished with work (I teach part-time ESL at a community college) and my kids are still in school for just a couple more weeks. I love my job and my students, but it is really a nice break to have no papers to grade, lessons to prepare, or schedule to worry about! Today, I threw my bills into one of my daughter's super light backpacks, fired up "Map My Run"... Tue, 21 May 2013 10:12:12 EST First 5K-Happy Mother's Day to Me! Yesterday was the memorial 5K I had signed up for about a month ago. It was my first one, and I had only been running for about two weeks at that time. My 13 year old daughter, her friend, and her friend's parents also did it. When I woke up, the day was dreary: cool, rainy, generally blechy. I was excited anyway, but a little bummed at the prospect of getting soaked. I was really more concerned that my iphone might get wet and I cannot imagine running without music! My husband had mad... Mon, 13 May 2013 17:42:54 EST Squeezing the Joy Out of Every Day Today while I was enjoying my run on this gorgeous spring day, I was thinking about how blessed I am to be able to run. I'm blessed to get the opportunity to run or exercise. Many people are not able to due to physical limitations. I don't have to, I get to. Then I started thinking about a friend's brother who passed away this week. He was only about 50, just two or three years older than I am. He was very lonely, depressed, wracked with pain and dependent on painkillers. He was not en... Sat, 4 May 2013 09:40:47 EST Who Is This Person?? So this is my first blog entry. Actually, it's my first blog anywhere, anytime! I realized I really get a lot out of reading about other people's victories and setbacks, so I should contribute my two cents, too! I've been maintaining about a 38 pound weight loss (plus or minus about four pounds) for about five months. It took me about a year to lose the weight. After the first few months, I started exercising and actually sticking with it for the first time in my life. I found that by t... Thu, 2 May 2013 11:41:17 EST
