LAURUMZ's SparkPeople Blog LAURUMZ's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Want to start running? Don't be afraid! I was the kid in high school that took 15-20 minutes to finish the mile run. I couldn't even run for one minute without becoming entirely breathless. The gradual nature of the Couch to 5k (

ex.shtml
) program appealed to me, even though I had and still have no plans to participate in a 5k. I just wanted to learn how to run!

This morning, I just finished Week 6 and 25 minutes of continuous running. Here are some words of advice i... Mon, 1 Aug 2011 11:19:23 EST Can You Repeat That? Well, I've had a glimpse this past week and half of what it's like to be hard of hearing. As the ear infection in my left ear began to clear up, I got one in my right ear. What luck! It was my first time ever having this problem and wow... it threw me off way more than I thought it could. The pain is gone now, but I'm still waiting for my ears to clear out so that I can hear properly again. Right now things sound kind of muffled.

My weight is still on the decline, little by little,... Wed, 14 Jul 2010 22:51:25 EST A Different Approach I've made a decision to stop tracking my calories for the time being.

The first reason is that I know that I eat a healthy diet consistently. I've been at the same weight for over two years now. Not every Vegan eats healthy, but my boyfriend and I always fill our shopping cart with nothing but heaps of veggies, whole grains and proteins. The closest that I come to junk food is my nightly chunk of dark chocolate. We don't eat out, save for special occasions.

The second re... Sun, 27 Jun 2010 18:54:22 EST Happy Friday! One of the ways that I pass the time at work is to listen to podcasts. Lots of podcasts. Today I stumbled upon the Quick and Dirty Tips "Get-Fit Guy" podcast, and his most recent show was comparing cardio, strength training and a combination of the two (together, in the same workout). He presents data from a 2008 University of California study. This study's most surprising claim states that combination training burns 991% more fat than doing just one or the other. Almost 1000 percent more! Wh... Fri, 25 Jun 2010 18:59:24 EST Bedtime Ramblings I flip through numerous Sparkpages and find the same background story again and again. This story involves the girls and women whom are trying to reclaim their high school bodies after the pains of childbirth or that sneaky Freshman 15. I, on the other hand, would never like to return to my high school weight... or my middle school weight, for that matter. I have been pleasantly plump from the moment that I sprang forth from my mother's... okay, I won't go there.

I've really begun ... Wed, 16 Jun 2010 22:31:21 EST Make or Break Right now I'm going through that difficult (re)starting period where the scale isn't moving because my body is still adjusting to all of the extra exercise I've been taking on. I call this the "make or break" period because it is when most people become discouraged and quit. After two weeks of careful eating and cardio every day without a budge on the old scale, it would be so easy to believe that this is just too difficult. I went through this when I first started losing weight and now that... Tue, 15 Jun 2010 21:47:27 EST Some Photos Here is the first broccoli harvest from my balcony garden. It was quite delicious!

Dinner from a couple nights ago... Tuscan Sun-dried Tomatoes and White Beans over Whole Wheat Pasta. This was a delicious meal! It really covers it all... veggies, protein and whole grains. I even used fresh basil from my garden! You can find the recipe in 'The Vegan Table' cookbook.

<img src="http://photos-ak.s... Tue, 8 Jun 2010 21:25:01 EST Binge Eating You may have read this CNN article recently published about recognizing binge eating as a psychiatric disorder.

.disorders.bingeing.obesity/index.html

I never considered myself as having an eating disorder before I lost weight and I'm certainly not one to scour the contents of WebMD attributing every symptom of every disease to myself. However, a lot of the things that would classify someone as being a binge eater,... Tue, 8 Jun 2010 21:00:59 EST Fantastic Week! My HRM was waiting for me when I got home from work yesterday. I headed to the gym before work this morning, eager to try it out. I was pleased to discover that all of the cardio machines at my gym are "Polar equipped," meaning that my Polar HRM can sync with and transmit directly to the machine! No more fooling with those silly hand sensors. I also noticed that according to my HRM, I burned more calories during the half hour than the machine typically estimated. BONUS!

I also got ... Fri, 4 Jun 2010 22:07:00 EST Get a bike! Wow, what a feeling! I rode my new bike to work today for the first time and I did not imagine that it could be so much fun! I kept having to wipe away a big goofy grin that crept onto my face from time to time. What a sight I must have been if anyone happend to glance my way at the right second... especially with my brown mushroom-shaped helmet (complete with Hawaiian pattern of neon green palms, pink flowers and an 'I love my brain' logo).

A racing heartbeat and intense burn in m... Wed, 2 Jun 2010 20:56:41 EST Heart Rate Monitoring I decided to try something different at the gym today (I usually stick to the elliptical) and ended up on the "Summit Trainer" which is a cross between an elliptical and a stair climber. Wow... I need to mix it up more often! Halfway through, there was sweat pouring down my face and I don't often break much of a sweat on the elliptical anymore... even at full speed. Sometimes I wonder why those machines even bother with the heart rate sensors on the handles. One minute, it reads 160 and then ... Mon, 31 May 2010 13:21:24 EST Introducing... new best friend!

It's a Trek Allant WSD. I added a basket to the front rack since I'll be commuting to work. It's incredibly fun to ride and the seat is so comfy! I went on the ride this morning to see if my youngest dog would like to run alongside me, and she did it perfectly! She's part greyhound, so running is a necessity for her. It will be so nice to be able to move with her as quickly as she l... Sat, 29 May 2010 13:31:36 EST Poor Planning! [Pros for this week:]

- I didn't miss any of my scheduled gym days. I'm very happy about this! While I've only been going three days a week, the other four days I've had dog-walking duty (total of 1.5 hours a day). I don't track the walking because I don't consider it cardio exercise for someone of my fitness level. It's really just a bonus.

- I stayed within my calorie ranges. I'm not celebrating this, though. See below.

[Cons for this week:]

- I d... Fri, 28 May 2010 07:22:00 EST Today's Food As a Vegan, people are always asking me what I eat. From time to time, I'll show you!

Breakfast was pretty standard... sliced banana topped with crunchy unsalted peanut butter and raisins, washed down with a shot of espresso and some soy milk.

Skipped lunch today in favor of a very early dinner (to work around real-life obligations): Vegan ravioli with sautéed tofu, yellow squash, mushrooms, broccoli, tomato, fresh basil and pine nuts. Yum!
<img src="http://photos-... Sun, 16 May 2010 21:15:58 EST 70% Gone Well, finals are over and my full time summer job begins tomorrow. It's time to get a little structure back into my life!

First thing's first... I started by tracking my calories again today. I will begin by tackling the chocolate problem. When is chocolate ever a problem, you ask? Well, that's what I would ask, which in itself lies the problem.

Every weekend I grab a couple Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate Truffle bars with the purest intentions. I know that I wouldn't want ... Sun, 16 May 2010 16:13:20 EST Reset Button I'm still struggling to get back on track, but I'm not giving up! Gearing up for finals and hopefully (pending interview results) a new summer job. It will be nice to have a normal 9-5 schedule again. When things are predictable it's so much easier to structure my eating habits in a healthy way. The summer is sort of like my reset button after two semesters and all of their destructive sway.

I've also got my garden all set up with broccoli, brussel sprouts, tomatoes and a few diffe... Mon, 26 Apr 2010 20:54:16 EST Confession Dear SparkPeople,

I have a confession to make. You may have read my article, "How I Found my Inner Spark." Since it was written, I lost an additional thirty pounds and completed the P90X program… which may I say, is no walk in the park! I've even managed to keep the weight off for the past two years. This is a list of accomplishments that anyone would be proud of. September rolled around and I quickly found myself neck-deep in the heaps of homework, exams, and labs that accompany a... Mon, 22 Mar 2010 16:55:07 EST College I've managed to maintain my weight (just haven't managed to lose anymore!), but I feel that this semester has taken a toll on my health. I have a week off for Thanksgiving and I'm going to focus on replacing all of the soy lattes and chocolate that I've been jacked up on with more fruit and veggies!

Stay good this holiday, but don't forget to indulge a little bit! Have a few bites of that cake -- just not a few slices!

Love,
Lauren

4 Mon, 23 Nov 2009 18:32:51 EST Summer I hope everyone is having a great summer!

My boyfriend and I finally finished P90X last week. I remained the same weight throughout the entire thing, but gained a lot of muscle. Now that it's over, I'm going back to concentrating on weight loss, but maintaining muscle mass. We are going to incorporate some of the P90X routines with standard cardio at the gym.

New plan:

M,W,F: Cardio (30 minutes)
T: Cardio (30 minutes) and alternating P90X Arms/Shoulders/... Tue, 11 Aug 2009 08:12:11 EST It's time... I've been maintaining my weight for the past year. I had still been eating healthy, but needed a break from the calorie counting.

With the spring semester coming to an end, I'm ready to kick it up a notch and finally lose the last of the pounds, no matter how long it takes!

As of yesterday, I've started tracking calories again. I started going to the gym again on Monday and plan on doing so every day. When my finals are over, I'm going to restart P90X and incorporate som... Thu, 16 Apr 2009 08:44:29 EST Happy Holidays Wishing a Happy Holiday to all of my Spark buddies!

Lots of love,
Lauren Fri, 19 Dec 2008 21:52:15 EST Summer I've been back in PA for a little over a month and I've been trying to have as much fun as possible before classes start again. The weight is still coming off slowly. I'm going to order the Power 90 program today and start it as soon as it arrives because I'd like to concentrate on toning up and building some muscle. This is something I've been neglecting.

My (new) boyfriend has been doing it for the past two months and he has gotten great results. He also says that it's really fu... Thu, 10 Jul 2008 13:27:07 EST Checking in After my boyfriend and I broke up, I decided that it would be best for me to move back to Pennsylvania (which is where all of my family is) but I needed to stick around until my semester was over.

During that time, they discovered advanced thyroid cancer in my grandmother, and after flying down to see her a couple times she finally passed away on Mother's Day. She went peacefully in her home surrounded by family and because she didn't want a funeral we had a wonderful celebratio... Thu, 29 May 2008 08:41:30 EST Rough week... I'm in the process of ending an almost three year relationship. This will also come with several life changes, as I'll be moving back to my home state (Pennsylvania) and transferring to a new college. Even though this is a mutual decision, I've been a wreck and I'm just trying to not take this out on myself. I haven't been eating enough and I certainly don't want to go to the other extreme to cope with my stress. So, I'm counting on you, Spark People... to keep me from going off the deep ... Thu, 17 Apr 2008 16:30:01 EST Under 200 Granted, it's only by half a pound, but I've never seen that number on a scale. It made me burst into tears. I've come so far and I never knew I had it in me. Mon, 7 Apr 2008 16:17:27 EST Thank you! Okay, I admit it. I've been slacking lately. I only lost two pounds last month. However, after this morning, your comments have inspired ME to get my ass to the gym. Thank you. Wed, 26 Mar 2008 08:15:08 EST E-mails and comments Between full-time work and full-time school, I have barely any time to respond to comments or sparkmails. However, I am very interested in chatting with everyone. I am signed on to AIM almost all the time from my mobile phone and would really love to hear from you. I'm usually bored out of my mind at work! If I don't respond right away, I am probably in class. My screen name is Laurumz.

Look forward to hearing from you. Thu, 13 Mar 2008 14:00:33 EST
