LAURIETAIT's SparkPeople Blog LAURIETAIT's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community OMG It's been a long time since I blogged! Thanks go to the 5% Challenge for getting me blogging again. It is our Living the Good Life challenge of the week.

I have done an awful lot of 5% Challenges in the past. Some have been more successful than others. I have been close to losing 5% of my body weight a few times. This challenge won't even be close. But that's not all bad news.

These challenges make me accountable to others. How the team does is dependent on everyone contributing. So more often than I make an... Sat, 31 May 2014 00:39:36 EST Friday, March 13, 2013 - Update It's 8:45 pm and I am still at school doing report cards. The good news is, even though I know there are boxes of potato chips, granolaa bars, pizza pops etc upstairs in the canteen, I have not broken down and eaten anything. I am going home now but first I'm stopping off to buy myself a well deserved salad. The hovering spectre of weigh in day is keeping me on track. The real test will be how I fare through a weekend of (these must be done by Monday 9am or my goose is cooked) report cards. T... Fri, 8 Mar 2013 21:48:08 EST Thursday, March 7, 2013 - Progress report So far so good today. I haven't eaten anything I shoudn't. I am stuck in my office doing report cards so that is a bigger deal than you may realize. I'm tired and leaving for home and dinner shortly. I plan to have a Healthy Choice frozen meal and go to bed before I'm tempted to eat anything else. I hope you all had a successful day and are headed for a satisfying weigh in day. Thu, 7 Mar 2013 20:03:51 EST Wednesday, March 6, 2013 - How'm I doin" so far? Well.... today I had a little bit of a slip. I had a good breakfast and lunch. My snacks were nutritious and low calorie. And then... I wound up doing extra supervision after school and I got hungry. So today I had some not so good snacks before dinner. I've had a good healthy dinner at my daughter's every day this week. (She's alone with baby while her hubs is working out of town for 2 weeks)Today we ordered sushi. Not too bad but it doesn't line up with the huge amounts of vegetables and f... Wed, 6 Mar 2013 23:26:27 EST March 5, 2013 -What am I doing to encourage myself to stay on track? Well, I'm trying to maintain variety in the fruits and veggies. If it's interesting I am more likely to stick with it. When I eat raw I have hummus as dip. I LOVE hummus. So that helps. I'm feeling thinner and weighing a little less and that is always good motivation. If I stick with all the other things like drinking water and exercising regularly that really helps too. Sometimes you let down in one department and the whole thing starts to go downhill fast. I guess my mantra for this part o... Wed, 6 Mar 2013 00:50:30 EST March 4, 2013 - What am I doing to change my habit? I have been surrounding myself with fruits and vegetables. I'm finding when you eat a lot of these its really hard to find room for something inappropriate like a bag of chips. I have to stay on top of the grocery shopping and keep resisiting any urge to splurge. Being lighter on my feet will be worth it! So far I've lost 2 lbs. Apparently crossing my fingers, toes etc is working.
45 277 210 368 267 69 Mon, 4 Mar 2013 16:21:20 EST March 3, 2013 - How am I going to do it? I'm working at staying within my daily calorie allotment. I think I need to just say NO to those impulsive (and often nutritionally deficient, high calorie) snacks. To avoid the empty feeling that usually precedes an unscheduled snack I am going to concentrate on eating nutrient dense foods like fruits, vegetables and seed and nuts. And then I'm going to cross my fingers, toes, arms, legs, eyes etc. lol Sun, 3 Mar 2013 18:41:52 EST March 2, 2013 - Healthy New Habits I have been having trouble staying within my recommended calorie limit. I will never be truly successful until I harness the undisciplined eating beast within. I have done it before. I just need to get back on track. So.... here's to a week of healthy new beginnings for us all.
408
PS- These drinks are totally calorie reduced! lol Sat, 2 Mar 2013 15:31:33 EST Amiyah (aka Mimi, aka Yahyah) at 6 Months Friday, March 1, 2013

As promised here is my Granddaughter update blog.

On Feb 26 (her 6 mo birthday) she had her 6 month check up and shots (on her Birthday!!). Does adding to mini (very mini) cheesecakes and a cream soda to your meal constitute adding variety to your diet? I did a CPR workshop today and lunch was provided. I don't feel too bad about the cheesecake but the cream soda is bugging me. I could have had water. I did eat another grapple today.

Habit Two: Exercise Earlier in the Day
I got 15 hard minutes on th... Mon, 16 Jan 2012 15:50:29 EST 5% Challenge Blog #2 New habit topic: Exercising for longer periods on a regular basis. Try getting my exercise in earlier in the day. The sooner I do it the more likely I am to be able to to more. It seems that when I leave it for later in the day something always interferes and I wind up doing the minimum amount.

How I will do it: Try getting my exercise in earlier in the day. I wish I could say first thing in the morning before school but that will never happen. The sooner I do it the more likely I... Sun, 15 Jan 2012 23:42:34 EST 5% Challenge Blog #1 I haven't blogged in forever but I guess I better step up for the challenge. We're supposed to talk about new habits we are trying to develop and what we're doing to work toward making them a regular part of out routine.

Lately I have been trying to add more variety to and improve the quality of the food I'm eating. I've been perusing new recipes and cookbooks for new ideas. Today I had a delicious, healthy Jambalaya from the Spark Cookbook. It included turkey sausage and shrimp, ... Sun, 15 Jan 2012 00:08:34 EST My Friday Blog This has been a really work long week. I'm glad it was only four days long! The transition from summer vacation to full time school has been difficult for me. Even though we only had two days of classes this week, my voice is shot. All that talking has taken it's toll. It doesn't help that at times we have 75+ kids in the gym at one time.

One good thing about being back at school is that I am trapped there all day. The only food around (so far) is the stuff I bring so I have been ... Sat, 10 Sep 2011 01:51:56 EST My Thursday Blog Well I survived the first day of school with students. I was lucky. We didn't have students in the gym for the first 2 periods. Then I had an In Motion class which hasn't started yet and then I had a prep period. So I got to ease my way into teaching. It's a good thing. My voice is a little the worse for wear. There is always a lot of talking on the first few days of class. I hope I can last through a whole day of teaching tomorrow.

I ate well today. So I'm happy with that. I slep... Thu, 8 Sep 2011 18:34:55 EST My Wednesday Blog It's 6:25 pm and my second day of school has come to an end. It was another day of orientation meetings for classroom teachers and another day of organization and preparation for specialists like me. Every once in a while a student would drop in for a visit but mostly we were on our own.

A day like today is one of the few times we have the opportunity to go out for lunch. Usually we are doing lunchtime supervision in the gym. So we try to take advantage of the opportunities when t... Wed, 7 Sep 2011 19:47:02 EST My Tuesday Blog It's 8:50 pm and my first day back at school is winding to an end. Today is an orientation day. Parents and their children come in for a half our meeting so teachers, students and their parents can get to know each other. It`s not a day when the physical education teacher gets much action. So I have spent the day cleaning, organizing and planning for the year.

My eating has been pretty good so far today. Mostly because I have been stuck here at school with no snacks. We did have a ... Tue, 6 Sep 2011 22:02:23 EST My Monday Blog Today I had a good healthy breakfast and lunch. I ate lots of veggies and fruit and I was staying well within my range. Then mt daughter coerced me (well she asked) me into taking her to Boston Pizza. She's having boyfriend problems. How could I say no. We shared some nachos, cactus fries and an individual pizza. We didn't eat it all. We boxed up half and brought it home.
Even so I am afraid to track that meal. I'm still psyching myself up for it. On the up side I have been for a walk. S... Tue, 6 Sep 2011 02:11:22 EST My Sunday Blog I've been having a really lazy Sunday so far. This is the first long weekend in a very long time that I haven't been working at my part-time job. They have been painting the building all week. I don't know what to do with myself so I haven't done anything. As soon as I finish I'm off for a nice long walk. The weather is slightly cool and overcast so it's perfect for exercising. I wish that I could run.

I've eaten pretty well so far today as well. I just have to be mindful and stay... Sun, 4 Sep 2011 15:54:18 EST My Saturday Blog I haven't blogged for so long I've almost forgotten how. I was putting together the promised blog of my trip to Iceland but it's taking longer than I thought. I am having difficulty downloading my pictures.

So I guess you'll just have to make do with my boring progress report.

I have participated faithfully in the Summer 5% Challenge. I've done my best to contribute to the Shooting Stars efforts. I have done at least 30 minutes of exercise everyday. I gave all the good ... Sun, 4 Sep 2011 03:26:21 EST Iceland Here I Come! Last year in August I started C25K program and enjoyed running for the first time in maaaaany years. I received a lot of support and encouragement from my Spark friends. One friend was particularly encouraging. BARBIETEC suggested that I should make it a goal to come to Iceland and run 10K in the Reykjavik Marathon. Things were going pretty well so I figured...Why not? To ensure that I didn't chicken out I posted a blog about my intentions.

Then I ran. Everything was going beauti... Sat, 23 Jul 2011 15:34:43 EST So Much for Blogging Weekly I made a resolution a while back to stay on top of my blogging by posting at least once a week. So here it is July and my last post was in May!! There are a few reasons why:

1. The end of the school year is nuts for a phys ed teacher. We had track, softball, reports, end of year activity days and planning for next year.

2. I'm still having trouble with my home wireless connection. This means sporadic service. Sometimes just enough time to log my meals etc. before I lose ... Thu, 14 Jul 2011 11:45:51 EST This Week was a Blow Out! The short version is:

4 I ate too much!
257 The weather and the long weekend and school stuff interfered with my exercise times.
11 I've gained 4 pounds and the weigh in isn't looking good for tomorrow
198 I've been a little overwhelmed at school these days. The end of the year is always so busy.
312 I have only run once in the last 10 days. Bu... Fri, 27 May 2011 18:17:01 EST A Day in the Park Just thought I'd take a minute to tell you about my day.

This morning I went to Kildonan Park with 3 classes from my school. It was part of an experiential learning event. One class of grade 6, 7 and 8 were involved.

Kildonan Park is a large and lovely urban park situated on the Red River in the north end of Winnipeg.

We were supposed to keep sustainability in mind when we planned our day. We chose to ride our bikes. It was about a 40 minute trip. We also ch... Thu, 19 May 2011 18:01:21 EST I REALLY Love My Kettlebell I have been using my Kettlebell for about two weeks now. I am noticing a trend.

For several months my weight has wavered up and down the scale. I've gone as high as 220 and been as low as 211. Mostly I've been hovering around 215. Since I started using my Kettlebell I have noticed that my weight has been declining daily. Sometimes it's only a quarter of a pound. But I'm okay with that. It's going down and staying down, at least for now. Alleluia!

I'm attributing this ... Thu, 12 May 2011 16:54:34 EST Freezing My A$$ Off in Manitoba It is so cold here today. I have been outside with my phys ed classes because we have to finish our track and field unit before the end of the month. We've already been so delayed by rain that we are reeeaally behind. So out we go.

I have C25K Club today too. We usually run outside but I don't know if we will even go today. We usually run in all kinds of weather but it is cold. I'm thinking we will postpone until tomorrow and hope for better weather. I have a meeting tonight anywa... Wed, 11 May 2011 15:19:55 EST Live Life My sister-in-law sent me this in an email. It's great advice. I thought I'd share it. I've seen it before but I don't know the author. Anyone out there have a clue?

To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me. It is the most requested column I've ever written.

My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more:

1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

2. When in doubt, just take the... Tue, 10 May 2011 11:39:38 EST My Mother's Day Treat On Sunday afternoon I went to my daughter's house for the promised Mother's Day massage. I was really looking forward to it. I'd been a little stiff and sore for a few days.

When I arrived I got a big surprise. I got another shellacking. My nails are beautiful. This is a really big deal for me. Phys ed teachers manicures rarely last through a day. In fact we rarely get manicures. It's pointless. But the shellac is really tough. I haven't broken a nail for ages. She put some nail ... Mon, 9 May 2011 19:27:18 EST I Love My Kettlebell While on a recent trip to Grand Forks, North Dakota, on the recommendation of Spark friend COMPUCATHY, I purchased one of Bob Harper's Kettlebells. I chose a 10 pound one. It came with an introductory DVD. I tried it and I love it. What a great workout. My heart rate was up there and I had sweat dripping down the side of my face by the time I was done. I didn't find the moves difficult. The DVD gives great instruction. I also purchased his Cardio Shred DVD. I tried it too but I think I nee... Sat, 7 May 2011 23:48:49 EST Black Ice - The After Party This is the long awaited, much requested (well, twice anyway) ringette banquet blog.
First a little background. The recreational league I play in has been around for 30+ years. It was started by a group of ringette moms who wanted to get active. They had very little skill but lots of energy. They decided to end the year with a fun tournament and themed banquet. This has been the tradition ever since. Teams takes a turn hosting the tournament and banquet. The choice of theme is up to them... Fri, 6 May 2011 17:36:35 EST The Agony of Defeat The Agony of Defeat
So I promised pictures and a blow by blow of our end of year tournament and it’s been more than two weeks since it ended. That’s the story of my life, (more than) a day late and a nickel short.
For the uninitiated, ringette is a game much like hockey. It’s played on ice with a straight stick (no blade) and a rubber ring.
I play in a recreational league for ladies 30 and over. The oldest player in our league (my mother) is 83 years old. We play about 30 gam... Wed, 4 May 2011 19:49:00 EST Blogging Once a Month is Better Than Nothing. Really! It seems like I haven't blogged in forever. I am stuck at school waiting for our open house to start at 7:00 pm so I might as well make good use of my time.

Spring break has come and gone since I last blogged. I spent my time reading, swimming, walking and going to Zumba. I forgot to go to my Monday yoga class though. During a holiday my brain turns off completely! I did go out for lunch a few times but I ate well. My weight was down to 111. I was in alt. The weekend before I wen... Thu, 17 Mar 2011 13:52:03 EST A Pretty Good Week All Things Considered This has been a pretty busy week.

At school everyone is getting a little weird because parent/teacher evenings are next week and teachers and students have been working overtime to finish their growth statements. There is the definite scent of stress in the air. With middle school students it comes out in the dumbest ways. For example, the last indoor track meet of the season was today. Our kid's have been awesome representatives for our school at all the other meets this year. T... Fri, 11 Mar 2011 20:39:02 EST I LOVE Zumba! I spent all day (8:30 - 5:30) in a Zumba Basic instructors workshop. It was great. We were active for about 300 minutes all told. My instructors name is Andrea Sandhu. She came in from Toronto to do the workshop. She was awesome. So upbeat and motivating. I took my camera and was going to include pictures but the two I took are from too far away. I really didn't have time to take any good ones. It was a pretty full day. And now, I'm a Zumba instructor! I'm not doing community classes for a wh... Sun, 27 Feb 2011 10:42:52 EST Today was a Better Day Today I ate pretty well in spite of the fact that it was treat day. Friday is the day when the teachers who are responsible for cleaning the staff room that week bring in treats for the rest of us. It's a pretty expensive proposition as there are 70+ staff here. Today was a pretty good day. There were veggies and crackers and hummus and artichoke dips. I stuck to those and avoided the cookies. Big, delicious looking cookies. But I didn't have one. That's one expectation met.

I also... Fri, 25 Feb 2011 20:29:29 EST Meeting my Expectations...Not! I missed my yoga class on Monday. I missed my Zumba class on Tuesday. I ate way over my calorie range on Wednesday. I haven't blogged since Saturday. Saying I'm falling down on the job is a bit of an understatement.

Circumstances have conspired to make it difficult to meet some of my expectations for the challenge. But the only one that is reasonable is that my computer is still waiting to be poked and prodded to discover what's wrong with it. It kinda affects my sparking on the... Thu, 24 Feb 2011 19:29:36 EST My Commitment Blog (and no I don't mean they're finally locking me up!) As part of the Winter-1 5% challenge I must write my expectations, goals and the reasons I want to change my life in a blog. There are 10 points in it for me in addition to the benefit to me of stating them for all to see.

Here goes.

My Expectations:

1. I will eat well and within my calorie range.
2. I will exercise with enthusiasm every day for at least 30 minutes.
3. The weather has been fine (until last night) and I have been able to take my In Motion classes outside. Yaaay! I'm running out of active things to do in the classroom. We played games in the snow. Ice and snow add a whole new dimension and level of difficulty to the activities. I really got my heart rate up there a few times. How cool is that fat burning for a living. I love my job.

I discovered this week that my ringette team has been bumped up to A division ... Fri, 18 Feb 2011 18:10:20 EST Better Late Than Never I'm being such a slacker about blogging. I said I'd do it every Friday and that only lasted about a week. But better late than never I guess.

I've played ringette twice so far this week and I've been feeling really good. My hip hasn't been bothering me as much and my team mates say I moving better so that's good.

I also went to a beginner yoga class on Monday. It was great. The 60 minutes just flew by. I did discover that my hip is not quite as good as I thought it was.... Wed, 9 Feb 2011 20:25:18 EST Checking In Yesterday was a good day for the staff at my school. We had a professional development day. It was a welcomed break for both staff and students. Both groups needed a day off from the routine of school. January can be a really long month.

A colleague and I offered interested staff a chance to certify in a Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR/AED course. It took most of the day but it was fun. My son attended too. He needs to have first aid and CPR certification to become an RCMP of... Sat, 29 Jan 2011 10:45:58 EST It's Friday and I ever happy about it! I had a busy week preparing our kids for the track meet. We wound up taking 70 students. It was a long day for me because I was running the girls long jump event. I started at 10:am and finished t 4:00 pm with a short 10 minute break for lunch around one o'clock. We must have had an average of 80 girls in each age group. (13,14,15) All I can say is please deliver me from Grade 8 girls! It was worse than usual because the school that was assigned to help us didn't show up. It was all worth it ... Fri, 21 Jan 2011 21:21:25 EST 'Cause I said I'd blog on Fridays.... I just finished a workout in the fitness room at school i did 20 minutes of running and 45 of walking. Then I did about 20 minutes of weights. I am determined to lose the weight I gained over the holidays. I have about 6 pounds to get down to my lowest weight since I started Spark. I didn't adjust my ticker when I gained. I just left the low number there to taunt me. I seemed to have worked. I finally got off my butt and started to do a little more. I have also reduced my calorie range. ' di... Fri, 14 Jan 2011 21:19:14 EST Catching Up It's the first day back at school since the break. The stars have finally aligned and I have a chance to blog and a computer that is working on all circuits! Hurray!

I had a quiet and restful holiday. I spent Christmas Eve at my cousin's with my mother's side of the family. We had a really nice and quite healthy pot luck. On Christmas Day my daughter hosted the family for dinner. The best part of that was that there were no leftovers at our house. The rest of the break I spent read... Send a Friend Some Love Some of you may have read my earlier blog about my Spark friend BARIETEC She was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and about a week ago she underwent a lumpectomy. Unfortunately a biopsy of the tumour shows the cancer is wider spread than first thought and she has to undergo a mastectomy soon.

Sigrun is one of the most positive, upbeat and courageous people it has ever been my pleasure to encounter. A little birdie told me I needed to keep my friends up to date! I've been feeling a little blah for a few weeks and this last week I've been sore and achy. I think it's a combination of end of term tired, reduced sleep, the cold and old age. Anyway, after I finish my workout and prepare for the next day I don't seem to have the energy or the mental acuity to blog. Besides, how many ways can you say, "I'm not ready for Christmas."

I ha... Fri, 17 Dec 2010 17:48:55 EST
