Fri, 17 Dec 2010 20:26:21 EST Farewell Sweet Sylvia Hi friends,
It was a rough night and morning. Our darling kitty Sylvia started struggling last evening and couldn't get a full breath. She was diagnosed with heart failure last Tuesday and the specialist gave us medication to give her to buy some time but it was too late. We debated taking her to an all-night urgent care vet but my daughter wanted to try to make it to 7:30am, when our own vet clinic opens. She called her BF over and they stayed up most of the night with Sylvia, keeping a... Tue, 14 Dec 2010 19:55:35 EST My 3 Simple Rules for a No-gain Plan for December Here are the 3 basic rules to my no-gain plan:

Rule 1: I can eat one cup of whatever food I want, as long as it fits in the bowl.
Rule 2: I cannot eat that same item more than once in a day.
Rule 3: I have to wait an hour between bowls.

I bought a set of 6 small glass bowls with lids at a Pampered Chef party. Each bowl holds 1 cup of food. These bowls are the key to my no-gain plan for December.
Using these rules, I have been able to take off 2 lbs since ... Tue, 30 Nov 2010 19:31:31 EST Turkey Trot 2010 My daughter Janelle and I ran in the 4 mile Turkey Trot on Thursday morning! Yes, it was cold, but it did not rain on us. This was Janelle's first timed race, and our very first mother-daughter race as well! We finished just under 45 minutes, treated ourselves to a pumpkin spice soy latte afterward, and felt great about ourselves the rest of Thanksgiving Day!! Hope you all had a wonderful, healthy and relaxing weekend with your loved ones. Happy running!

<img src="http://photos-ak... Mon, 29 Nov 2010 01:29:20 EST My Second Half Marathon: Frosty Fun! I ran my second half marathon on 11/20/10. It was a benefit run, and proceeds went to families who struggle to pay their heating bills in the winter. I wasn't in the same shape that I was in September for my first half marathon, but I have been running 2-3 days per week since and had a good 12.5 mile training run the Saturday before, so I knew that I could still do this!

This time I wasn't so nervous about the race, and in fact I really looked forward to, and enjoyed the entire ex... Sun, 28 Nov 2010 00:18:59 EST How I tricked myself into running on a rainy day In anticipation of my planned half marathon only a week away, and my lack of training for the past few weeks because of travel and a head cold, I knew I needed to do a long run this weekend. But when I woke up on Saturday, the weather was dark, gray, cold, and drizzly. I am a bit wimpy about getting cold and wet, so I put it off to see if the weather would improve. I made a big pot of soup and some fresh whole wheat bread, cleaned the whole house, and watched some football while I was waiting... Mon, 15 Nov 2010 18:59:30 EST Greetings from the East Coast- Day 3 Day 3 was Museum day! I started my day out at 7:00am in the hotel lobby, where 20 of us conventioneers met for an early sunrise run. The organizers gave us each a glow bracelet to wear in the early morning light. We ran through the city until we got to a bike path along the Potomac River. We enjoyed a beautiful sunrise while trying to warm up against a frigid 37 degree morning. The delivery drivers along the city streets stared at us as we ran by like we were aliens. The Reagan National Airpo... Tue, 2 Nov 2010 22:38:06 EST Greetings from the East Coast- Day 2 Day 2 in Washington DC was a tour day. I started out with the Sunrise Yoga activity here at the hotel at 6:00am, grabbed a banana and a Cliff bar for breakfast, and headed to the Metro train. The first stop was the Pentagon, and the second stop was Arlington Cemetery. I got off at the cemetery. When I got up to the admission booth, I decided to buy a ticket for a guided tour through the cemetery, which included a lot of other memorials, statues, and attractions. The tour bus took us all aroun... Tue, 2 Nov 2010 00:12:34 EST Greetings from the East Coast- Day 1 Hi everyone,
Happy Halloween! I arrived at Reagan Airport in Wash. DC yesterday from Oregon and my flight was a half hour early so I had lots of time to get settled in before dinner. I had dinner with my former boss, who I used to work for at the Center on Human Development on the third floor. He is here to meet with some colleagues about a grant project and participate in a focus group that they have planned for their project. He said jokingly that if he doesn't attend these annual meet... Sun, 31 Oct 2010 20:30:26 EST Our pumpkin carving contest!

We have a pumpkin carving contest at work every year as a fundraiser for families with children with disabilities that use our clinic. Since my carving skills are not very creative and I was a bit lazy last night, I decided to make good use of some old Mr. Potato Head pieces in our preschool classroom. I thought the children would laugh when they recognize the pieces from their toy box! My entry is above. Some of th... Thu, 28 Oct 2010 13:10:05 EST Our first egg! Here it is, our first egg. It's small but perfectly shaped and a beautiful shade! We've been waiting for 6 months for this moment! Since chickens lay 2 eggs every 3 days and we have 3 chickens, we should get a dozen a week if all goes well and I won't have to buy eggs anymore!! They will most likely stop laying in the winter, so we will enjoy whatever eggs we get this fall and look forward to more in the spring!

Wed, 6 Oct 2010 00:36:20 EST Belknap Hot Springs I took two days off work and went to Belknap Hot Springs for a retreat with two of my best friends. It is a beautiful rustic lodge that was established in the 1800's and is a historic stagecoach stop alongside the beautiful McKenzie River. It has two hot natural mineral pools and many acres of gardens and hiking paths. We had a fabulous time!

Front entrance of lodge

Kitchen and sitting area of our l... Mon, 4 Oct 2010 01:01:11 EST My baby chickies are big girls now! Look how big and beautiful my Australorp hens are now! They are so fluffy and fun, I just love it when they follow me around the yard and they are curious about everything I do! They constantly chatter about everything, just like little old ladies and are so competitive, if one of them discovers something good, they will all dive in to get a piece. They have officially declared dominance over every other critter in the family, including the dogs. In fact, I have seen the chickens herding the ... Wed, 29 Sep 2010 13:44:23 EST Blackberries, bees, and poison oak: A hike to remember! Tonight after work my daughter picked me up and we headed up to Mount Pisgah to meet 2 other friends for an evening hike. We hiked the main front trail and it was perfect weather and a beautiful evening. On the way back down, our friends talked us into trying a different trail, one they said would take us through a meadow and forest area, and drop us down by the river, a half mile or so from our cars. They had hiked this trail 5 years before and said it was really pretty.

We start... Tue, 14 Sep 2010 01:12:00 EST Shrewsbury Renaissance Faire My daughters and I love to go to fantasy festivals, faires, and cultural events. This year I have been to the Scottish Highlander Games, the Faerieworlds Festival, and the Shrewsbury Renaissance Faire. We plan and make most of our costumes and accessories and go back in time to talk and behave the way they did during that era. As usual, we had a wonderful time and it was a beautiful day. Below are some pictures.

<B... Sun, 12 Sep 2010 02:14:32 EST Eugene Women's Half Marathon: Sprint to the finish Julia and I sprinting to the finish line. You can see me waving my arm at my daughters as I run by way over on the opposite side of the street about halfway through the video! Tue, 7 Sep 2010 02:20:54 EST The Eugene Women's Half Marathon My first ever half marathon. This was the most challenging and rewarding activity I have ever done and it was an absolutely incredible experience, one that I will never forget. I'd like to share it with you!

THE NIGHT BEFORE: I decided not to eat any pasta, despite my coach's suggestion. I have been combining this training program with weight loss, and because of that I have not eaten any pasta in a long... Tue, 7 Sep 2010 02:03:14 EST Are you ready for some football?! Today was our first game, and beat New Mexico 72-0! Everybody played well, no injuries, and next week is Tennessee. Great start to the season. GO DUCKS!!

Sat, 4 Sep 2010 22:57:29 EST Half Marathon Training- week 12 and a day at the beach! Before I write about my training, can I just say this:
I ACHIEVED MY WEIGHT LOSS GOAL TODAY!! I was 159.8 when I woke up at 6am, and 158.8 after my run. My body fat percentage is the lowest in 2 decades, and I don't think I've ever felt stronger, healthier, or happier than I do right now. Running is the best therapy in the world, and it's FREE!!! Now all I need to do is achieve my fitness goal and I will be a completely whole person again, both inside and out!!

This was the l... Sun, 29 Aug 2010 01:21:33 EST Eat Pray Love I saw Julia Roberts' new movie tonight, Eat Pray Love. Julia actually did an excellent job in her role and they didn't have her looking all gorgeous and perfect in this one either. Her character was someone we can all relate to going through relationship issues, divorce, regret, guilt, forgiveness, love, and finally finding herself. I related to it in a very real way, having spent the last 6 years dealing with grief and failed relationships, then finally finding out who I am and how I want to... Wed, 25 Aug 2010 01:40:27 EST Half Marathon Training- week 11 This was the big week- the longest team training run at 11 miles. I felt confident because I had done so well on the 10 mile team run 2 weeks before, but was the furthest I had ever tried to run. I partnered with a woman who has similar pace as me, and our course was one I am familiar with, so no worries about getting lost! We started out very comfortable, at a 10.30 pace, trying to keep it there so not to burn out too early. At mile 5, we caught up with another team mate, who was struggling ... Mon, 23 Aug 2010 19:18:47 EST Apples, ladders & Wasps, oh my! My gravenstein apple tree is overloaded this year and is dropping a basketful of apples per day. I'm barely keeping up! I peeled and sliced 4 gallon bags of apples this morning and put them in the freezer. I make a large kettle of unsweetened applesauce each week and we use it for smoothies and fresh eating. I made a few healthy pies with very thin whole wheat crust and they were a hit with the neighbors! Since I don't care for desserts right now, mostly I make apple stuff and either give it ... Mon, 23 Aug 2010 00:35:51 EST My beautiful little critters Below is a video that my daughters made as a surprise for my birthday! In it is Daisy, my sweet rag doll kitty, Sylvia, my daughter Janelle's beautiful calico, Piggly, our lop bunny, and the 3 chicks, both as babies and as adolescents. The bunny chases Sylvia around all the time, and like a little brother, she bats at him playfully when he gets too annoying. The only ones left out of this video were the border collies, Ozzie and Hattie, so I posted a picture of them below the link. All of the... Sat, 21 Aug 2010 19:20:02 EST Half Marathon Training- week 10 Last week was great! It was a "low mileage" week, so I ran 2.5 miles on Monday, 5 on Tuesday and Wednesday, then hiked for 2 hours up and down a mountain on Thursday, rested on Friday, and ran 7 miles on Saturday, then rested again on Sunday. I feel fantastic and ready to work up to my first ever 11 mile team run this Saturday. I will follow the same plan as last week, except that I will run 5 miles each night until Thursday, then the hike. I ran up part of that mountain last week and will do... Tue, 17 Aug 2010 01:35:38 EST I made my doctor happy! I go in for my mammo and annual exam right around my birthday each year. Five years ago, when I started with my current OB doctor, I looked like the before picture on my sparkpage. I remember during that first appointment, I kept bursting into tears because of grief issues from having just lost my husband, and shame over how I looked and felt. I was a mess, both emotionally and physically. We talked about the fact that I needed to take care of myself and change the way I was using food as a c... Thu, 12 Aug 2010 17:54:41 EST Half Marathon Training- week 9 Week 9 already! This was a big week for me because my half marathon team was scheduled for a 10 mile team run, my first ever. I have learned what to eat and not to eat before a run, how much liquid to have along, and what to wear to be most comfortable. So Saturday I put everything into place.

I ate a banana, 2 Tablespoons of peanut butter, and 2 Tablespoons of honey that morning. No fiber before runs, it just wants to go right through me! Then I dissolved 2 electrolyte tablets in... Wed, 11 Aug 2010 00:20:16 EST What I did on vacation: patio set makeover This summer I looked at my ugly patio set and decided something needed to be done. There was nothing really wrong with it, but the weather had taken its toll on the fabric on the chairs and the metal was faded. So I cut open all the chair covers and pulled out the cushions. Then I went to the fabric store and bought some pretty fabric made for outdoor use, and made a new pattern out of the old covers. Then I sewed up all the new cushions, and added velcro closures so I can remove and wash the... Thu, 5 Aug 2010 01:16:47 EST Half Marathon Training- week 8 My new Garmin is here!! I absolutely love it, Forerunner 110 with GPS and heartrate monitor. After a run, I plug it into my laptop, and it gives me lots of data on my pace, heartrate, calories burned, altitude gain, miles ran, total time, etc. It even shows you your route, and you can track the speed and elevation for each mile along the way. There is so much helpful data, it's like a new pair of running shoes or a new music player, my Garmin makes me want to get out there and run!

... Wed, 4 Aug 2010 01:46:09 EST Birdhouse fence planters and other backyard pictures My daughter got me these cute rustic birdhouse planters at her work where they were throwing them away. I fastened them to my back fence and planted some flowers in each one. Now that they are growing I wanted to share how sweet they are. They make me happy and I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Before the planting

<img src=... Tue, 3 Aug 2010 02:20:44 EST We went to Fairyland for a day This weekend was the big Faerieworlds Festival at one of our county parks. My daughters and I love to dress up in our fairy costumes and enjoy the festival activities, food, shopping, and music. Below are some pictures of our day.

Daisy and me getting ready for the fairy festival

Taking pictures in the backyard before the fest... Mon, 2 Aug 2010 02:41:45 EST Half Marathon Training- week 7 Week 7
Ran 10 miles on my own, plus a 2 mile uphill hike and 4 mile hill training run with my team on Thursday. Saturday I ran 9 miles in 90 minutes and felt strong from the beginning. Since I ran out of fuel on my 8 mile run 2 weeks ago and struggled, I ate more before my run this time so that I would have enough fuel to sustain me for 90 minutes. I ate a slice of whole wheat bread with 2 T. peanut butter, 2 T. honey, and a banana. The food lasted and I ran fine but next long run will l... Sun, 25 Jul 2010 13:23:47 EST Hill running- the ultimate leg workout! Tonight was my first hill training run with my half marathon training group. They usually meet on Thursdays to do speed runs at a local track but I am not really interested in sprints or speed drills. I am more of a slow & steady long distance runner I think. However, today was a hill run and I love climbing hills so I had to go check it out! I usually hike Mount Pisgah once a week and love that challenge.

I brought my running gear to work with me today and carefully planned all m... Fri, 23 Jul 2010 02:27:22 EST What to eat before and during long runs This information was sent by my half marathon running coach Anna Heintz and was so good I wanted to share with others who are running long distances.

As these runs are getting longer and you are being active for more than an hour, its time to start thinking about energy supplements. Many of you have heard of runners taking "GU" on a long run. What is "GU"? Gu is a form of sugar/electrolyte supplement to help runners stay energized and hydrated on their long runs.

The i... Wed, 21 Jul 2010 11:58:42 EST Farewell to a little feathered friend This was a sad day for me. Phoenix, the little baby eagle chick that I have been watching grow up in its nest on Hornby Island, Canada died unexpectedly late yesterday. He was 3 months old and ready to fly- literally, right on the edge of the nest, any day now. But he started having labored breathing yesterday and began struggling and thrashing around, and fell over. There are people all over the world who would tune in and watch him growing up every day, including me. The Hornby Eagles faceb... Fri, 16 Jul 2010 02:00:49 EST High Fiber Whole Wheat Garlic Herb Bread This is my newest favorite bread recipe and it's amazing toasted with smart balance lite spread or dipped into olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Store all home-made breads in the fridge to keep fresh longer since there are no preservatives. When bread gets several days old, I cut up what's left into croutons and put them on a cookie sheet, drizzle with a little olive oil, and season with salt & pepper. Note: if you don't have or can't get all the fiber ingredients in the recipe, just put in one... Sat, 10 Jul 2010 01:51:48 EST Important information about staying hydrated in the heat This was sent to me by my half marathon training coach, Anna Heintz and I thought there are probably others who will be training in the heat. Please read:

Be sure you are hydrating extra this week and also replenishing your electrolytes after your runs. You will run into problems if you do not hydrate properly after your runs because dehydration accumulates over time. A good example of this is the Vikings football player who died after three days of summer practice back years... Wed, 30 Jun 2010 14:53:39 EST My Half Marathon Training Blog- updated 7/24/10 Week 1:
Ran 10 miles on my own during the week, and 5 miles in 60 minutes with my training team on Saturday. Was dead tired and every muscle hurt. When I got home I went back to bed for 2 hours. I have a long way to go and not sure I can really do this.

Week 2:
Ran 10 miles on my own during the week, hiked Mount Pisgah, and ran 6 miles in 61 minutes with my training team on Saturday. Missed the half marathon group so ran with the marathon group. Was so sore I couldn't wa... Sun, 27 Jun 2010 02:45:31 EST The chicks are outside in their new coop! The chicks are 4 weeks old now, and nearly as tall as the walls in their little nursery wading pool/pen, so we moved them outside into their new coop. Piggles the bunny was living in the coop until they were old enough to be outside. We moved Piggles into his own space, the old dog kennel, which has been bunny-proofed!

The first night when the sun went down, the chicks began chirping loudly and were panicking because of the dark and cool air, so we installed their heat lamp in the... Thu, 24 Jun 2010 14:56:42 EST Functional backyard art My daughter works at a large hotel. This week they were cleaning out storage closets and throwing most of the items away so she rescued these 10 birdhouse planters for me. I mounted them on my new fence and will be putting potting soil and some plants/flowers in them soon. This is a great way to dress up an otherwise boring stretch of fence. I put this fence up myself this winter when my old fence fell down! In front of the fence is part of my pond, and above is my gravenstein apple tree! <BR... Wed, 23 Jun 2010 12:10:03 EST Graduation time! Below is a picture we took this weekend at my oldest daughter's master's degree graduation at the University of Oregon. Two done, one to go!!

Tue, 15 Jun 2010 14:29:04 EST Look how big my chicks are now! Their first outing! Look how big my babies are now! We read that chicks can be outside for short outings once they are 3 weeks old so my daughter set up a little sheltered cage for them in the backyard and put them out to get a taste of the great outdoors! They were curious but overwhelmed, and after about 10 minutes huddled in the corner of the cage. When my daughter stuck her hand in to comfort them, all three jumped into her hand and onto her arm and wouldn't let go! She brought them back into their little nu... Thu, 10 Jun 2010 17:32:37 EST The new practice perch We made a new practice perch for our baby chicks so they can get used to sitting on a pole and balancing. Today my daughter and I decided to take a trip down to the new Backyard Farm store. I have been very interested in raising a few chickens and having my own organic eggs, and there is a new enthusiastic group of community members raising chickens in our area and meeting at this new neighborhood store.

My daughter and I had bought a nice chicken coop/bunny hutch a few months ago and have been waiting for the weather to warm up a bit so we can go look at chickens. It is an ancient protein rich grain that has a fluffy, creamy, slightly crunchy texture and a somewhat nutty flavor when cooked. Quinoa is available in your local health food stores throughout the year. I cook mine in a rice cooker.

It packs a powerful punch of protein and also contains riboflavin, lysine, manganese, magnesium, iron, tryptophan, copper, and phosphorus with only 300 calories in a cup.
