I think I am still pretty limited as what I can do because am I still coughing a lot, but I can at least go on my lunch walks again and maybe try the elliptical at the gym. I'm not sure that I'm ready to get back to my kickboxing or water zumba classes just yet.

Amazingly I have somehow managed to lose another pound in the month since I got sick. Part of that is probably that... Tue, 12 Mar 2013 23:17:36 EST Fitbit http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5188474 My husband got me a Fitbit for christmas. So far I am really loving it. I like being able to see how well I am sleeping every night. And the pedometer is much more efficient than the Actiped that I had been using.

I also like that it can track the flights of stairs that you climb during the day. However, I am almost never in a building with steps, so I am having a hard time meeting the minimum goal of 5 flights. I tried using my step at home and just doing that for a while, ... Thu, 3 Jan 2013 15:41:58 EST Holiday Goals http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5139887 So I am adjusting my goals for the next month or so. I will continue to workout as I have been doing and tracking what I eat. However, I realize that there will be a few instances when I will not be able to accurately track my food. So in those instances I will make healthy food choices, allow myself a few of my favorite treats, and not allow my family to push me to overeat (although that is rarely an issue).

So my weight goal from now until after Christmas is to maintain. I ... Sun, 18 Nov 2012 23:46:56 EST Results from my health screening http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5119550 I got the results from my result health screening today. They did a full blood panel and I am in perfect health! There was only one area that showed up a being a moderate risk, my HDL is 44 mg/dL (down from 51 mg/dL last year). Although that is in the healthy range (above 40 mg/dL) it is recommended that women have an HDL above 60 mg/dL to reduce their risk of heart disease.

So I asked the nurse about the results, since I have been exercising and eating well (lots of healthy fat... Wed, 31 Oct 2012 21:13:05 EST Back to the Blog http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5111784 After a short hiatus I am back to blogging. I took a break from most of my SparkPeople stuff over the long weekend when I had my comprehensive exam for graduate school. Essentially I had four days to research and write a 10-15 page paper on a topic that they give me at noon on the first day of the exam. I still ate well and exercised during those four days, but I just didn't have time to do all of the message boards, quizzes, trivia, articles and everything else. I did have to take sever... That is a pretty big difference. So it is no wonder that I haven't been losing any weight. Now that my range is corrected I... Sun, 23 Sep 2012 12:05:04 EST Measuring Success http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5070364 So I did my girth measurements today. After a month of fluctuating back and forth between the same two pounds, it is finally time to check my other measurements.

With no weight change I have still lost:

1/2" on my waist
1/2" on my hips
1/4" on my thighs

Also at yoga today, I noticed that I was able to stretch a little more deeply into some of the poses than I was able to before.

One more happy note, I had injured my wrist a while back ... Sat, 22 Sep 2012 12:48:49 EST Making Friends at the Gym http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5068476 The girl that recognized me at kickboxing yesterday was at Body Pump tonight and introduced me to a couple of her friends. They all seem really nice and it makes it that much more fun to know people at the gym.

Plus I also love the instructors at the YMCA. They are all so nice and encouraging. They really care more that you have good form than that you push yourself too hard or try to keep up with other people in the class.

I had been a member of my old gym for 9 ye... Thu, 20 Sep 2012 22:42:00 EST Kickboxing Rocks! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5067013 I went to my first cardio kickboxing class today and it was so much fun. I have done kickboxing on Wii Fit, but had never been to a class before. the instructor told me that I had great form and couldn't believe that it was my first class. I was kind of intimidated when I first got there, but the instructor was great, welcomed me into the class, and paired me up with a regular who was also super nice. I'm so glad that I decided to stay. The class was great and I feel so energized.
... Wed, 19 Sep 2012 21:50:28 EST Check-In http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5065581 So I had my body fat checked at the gym today. They have one of those bioelectrical impedance devices, which has a margin of error of +/- 3%. So today's measurement was 27.8% body fat, which is roughly 38 pounds of fat and a lean body mass of 98.91 pounds.

I wish that I had measured this when I first started working out regularly back in June, just to have something to compare it to. My goal is to get my body fat percentage below 25%. I don't know who long that will take, but... Tue, 18 Sep 2012 22:37:54 EST People are Starting to Notice! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5063457 So far I have lost 10 pounds, although I've hit a plateau and haven't lost any more weight in almost a month. Still, I had dinner over the weekend with some friends that I hadn't seen in a few months and they noticed that I had lost weight. It is such a great feeling when people start to notice the positive changes that I have already started to see in myself!

252 Mon, 17 Sep 2012 15:13:24 EST Trying something new http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5058274 I had heard from several friends that the Body Pump class was a lot of fun and a great workout. So today I decided to try it out. It was a little intimidating because you have a bunch of different equipment and have to change things out frequently.

I'm so glad that I went and I know that next time I will have a better idea of what to expect and be able to keep up even more. 386 Thu, 13 Sep 2012 21:48:20 EST Eating like a Hobbit http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5056717 I love food and I love to eat. And much like a Hobbit, I probably have 6 or 7 meals each day. Unlike a Hobbit, those meals are fairly small. So this is my usual, Hobbity day:

7am - Breakfast
10am - Second Breakfast (small snack)
12pm - Luncheon
3pm - Tea (small snack)
6pm - Dinner (small snack on the way home, usually before the gym)
8pm - Supper

No room for Elevenses on a typical day. Wed, 12 Sep 2012 21:11:54 EST Streaking http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5053466 No, I'm not talking about running across a football field naked. I am currently in my longest SparkStreak, 57 days. Unlike the previous times that I have used SparkPeople, I am still motivated and going strong.

Today I went on a jog during my lunch break (I'm training for the Trick-or-Treat Trot 5K) and then I went to pilates after work. Mon, 10 Sep 2012 21:57:56 EST Waking up without an alarm http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5050433 Now, I'm not saying that I would completely go without using an alarm. But I went to bed early last night, around 9pm and was able to wake up before my alarm went of this morning (which was just before 6am). That really is so much nicer than being jolted awake by an annoying, buzzing noise.

I have actually been able to wake up before my alarm a lot more recently. I love this because It is so much more relaxing and I tend to feel more well rested. 102 Sat, 8 Sep 2012 23:58:06 EST Exhausted and feeling great http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5049003 I did strength training last night and decided to swim laps today. I only did 30 minutes, because I was short on time, but it was still enough to feel like to got in a good workout. Now, for the rest of the day, I have had that great feeling where your muscles feel like lead but don't ache.

It was also a busy day because I had a ton of errands to run and my husband and I met our Little Brother (we are volunteering with Big Brothers/Big Sisters). Fri, 7 Sep 2012 20:23:16 EST Ignoring my frustration http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5047753 I have gained two pounds in the past two weeks and I have no idea why. I have measured & tracked all of my food, staying within my calorie range. I have worked out every day (minus one) alternating cardio, weights, & flexibility. Sometimes I have even worked out twice a day.

I find this very frustrating because I lost the first 10 pounds fairly quickly and now they are trying to creep back on me. But I will not let this get me down. I love the way that I feel after I workout. ... Thu, 6 Sep 2012 21:55:14 EST Preparing for Tomorrow http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5046276 I realized this morning that I was running low on lunches and only had enough stuff to get me through today. When I got off work, and did birthday present shopping for my nieces, I was too tired to run to the grocery store to buy lunch meat or frozen meals. Then I remembered that I bought stuff to make Buffalo Chicken Chili and would just need to thaw the chicken and throw everything in the crockpot. Took less than 30 minutes and now I have lunch (and probably dinner) for tomorrow!
<... Wed, 5 Sep 2012 22:11:59 EST Enjoying Strength Training http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5044671 I am getting more familiar with my new gym and knowing where all of the weight machines are. Today I did a full body strength training session and really enjoyed it. I like the feeling of pushing myself and gradually seeing improvement. I was able to lift a little more when doing my bicep curls (7 lbs, up from 5 lbs).

I was a little worn out this afternoon, plus it was 103 F outside, so I decided to skip my lunch walk. Tue, 4 Sep 2012 21:45:50 EST A Lazy Labor Day http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5043067 I think that today was the first day in two or three weeks that I did not workout. I'm counting today as a rest day, since I have been getting in two workouts on most days anyways.

Today was also the first day that I ate enough calcium without having to take a supplement. In fact, I met all of my dietary goals today. What really did it was the Pad Thai that I made (recipe in the SparkPeople Cookbook). It had tons of calcium, protein, & good carbs. My husband really liked it, wh... Mon, 3 Sep 2012 21:33:51 EST Success at Dinner http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5041682 My husband and I went out to dinner with his parents tonight. We went to this German restaurant, which none of us had been to before. I know that German food is notorious for being heavy and not exactly healthy. So after perusing the menu for a few minutes I actually found something that was relatively healthy. Beef medallions cooked in red wine sauce, steamed asparagus, German noodles, and a side salad. I ate a little less than half of my meal, plus a few brussel sprouts off of my husb... Sun, 2 Sep 2012 21:44:54 EST Saying Goodbye http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5040367 I attended a memorial service today for my great-aunt Toni and my great-uncle Bill. They both passed away recently, within a month of each other. The service was beautiful and it was great getting to see my family and hear stories about my aunt & uncle. I have very fond memories for Thanksgivings, Christmases, and Fourth of Julys at their house. It was kind of a tough day, but I'm glad that my extended family is still so close and that I was able to get so many hugs from my aunts, uncles,... Sat, 1 Sep 2012 19:12:31 EST Enjoy Your Burrito http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5039384 "Enjoy Your Burrito" is an expression (from the Nerdist podcast) that means live in the now. Don't spend so much time being concerned about what might happen in the future that you can't appreciate the moment that you are currently in. I think that it is such a good mantra.

This can extend to many areas of my life. I have been stuck at the same weight for about two weeks now, which might seem disappointing. However, I still managed to lose inches on my legs, waist, hips, and b... Fri, 31 Aug 2012 22:18:54 EST Overcoming my excuses http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5038068 I did not feel like working out today. I woke up early even though I was still tired because my husband had to go to work early today and I figured I might as well get out of bed. So I had an extra 30 minutes this morning. I decided to just do a short warm-up by marching in place, rather than putz around on the computer for half an hour. Once I was warmed up, I figured I might as well do a few strength training exercises and then I did a short cool down. Only about 20 minutes, but I did ... Thu, 30 Aug 2012 21:59:59 EST I eat constantly http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5035938 I have actually been doing really well with my eating habits lately. I plan out my meals and portion out everything at the beginning of the day. So it often comes as a surprise to many people that I am not consuming several thousand calories a day because I do eat constantly. In fact, my coworkers often comment about how often I eat at work.

I probably consume a quarter to a third of my daily calories in snacks. I think I am just one of those people who has to have something to... Wed, 29 Aug 2012 11:19:43 EST The importance of research http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5035340 So I finally decided to start taking a calcium supplement because after two months tracking my food I have only been able to get the daily recommended amount of calcium once. I had tried increasing my dairy and calcium rich veggies, but still wasn't getting enough. So I read some articles about calcium supplements and found that calcium citrate with vitamin D was the best option for me.

Yesterday was the first day that I took the supplement and it was the first day that I met a... Tue, 28 Aug 2012 22:10:56 EST Cutting Back on Salt http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5033804 I am not one to add salt to my food, but it wasn't until I started tracking my sodium intake that I realized how much sodium is in everything. At first, I had a really hard time staying below the recommended daily serving of sodium. But now, because I eat mostly fresh fruits and veggies and make almost all of my meals, I am finally able to stay well within the recommended range.

So tonight I attempted a low sodium makeover of one of my favorite meals: Paula Deen's Taco Soup. Mon, 27 Aug 2012 21:24:47 EST I LOVE the YMCA! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5032052 So I had been going to Aspen Athletic Club on and off for the past 9 years. It was recently bought by Gold's Gym and they moved to a new location and bought all new equipment. I was pretty excited about the changes at first, but in the process they had closed all but two of their locations. Now the fancy, new location was always busy and I hate having to wait to using a cardio machine. They also increased the membership fee and I decided it was time to try a new gym.

This wee... Sun, 26 Aug 2012 18:37:55 EST Subtle Changes http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5030504 I have been using SparkPeople consistently for two months now (after fairly lengthy hiatus over the past year) and have been exercising, eating better, drinking more water, and staying motivated. In that time I have noticed several changes in not just my weight, but also my energy levels and my attitude. I wake up without needing (or wanting) to hit the snooze bar. Sometimes I even wake up a few minutes before my alarm goes off, so I can avoid that annoying buzzer. Also, I have never been... Sat, 25 Aug 2012 12:41:13 EST Unplugged http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5029842 My old routine use to be to come home from work, plop down in front of the TV with my laptop and play games/watch TV from the time I got home from work until the time I went to sleep. This week something has changed.

The idea of watching hours of TV or spending all night playing games on facebook no longer sounds appealing to me. Instead I watch maybe one hour of TV in the evening, but then I turn the TV off. I have been reading instead. I actually love to read, but had been sp... Fri, 24 Aug 2012 21:34:52 EST Unintentionally Vegetarian http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5028513 So for the past five days I have not eaten meat. It wasn't a conscious decision, it just so happened that everything I have prepared has not contained meat. My husband hasn't even noticed. I fixed quinoa stuff bell peppers one day and ate the leftovers the next day. I also fixed a big pot of black beans and have been eating on that. I have had eggs and dairy, but not animal flesh.

I use to be vegetarian for several years in high school and college, but I don't think I want to ... Thu, 23 Aug 2012 21:56:09 EST My Lying Eyes http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5027114 I have decided to completely ignore my reflection for a while. Even though I have already lost 10 pounds, when I look in the mirror I don't see any difference. And as I remember, when I was at my thinnest in college (117 lbs) I still think that the reflection of myself looked not too different than I look now (although my clothing would suggest otherwise).

I allowed myself to get discouraged about a year ago. Despite losing weight and fitting into clothes that I hadn't worn sinc... Wed, 22 Aug 2012 22:55:49 EST Two-a-days http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5025601 There are usually one or two days each week where I work an odd schedule. This week those days are today (when I work 11am-8pm) and tomorrow (when I work 12pm-9pm). There are advantages and disadvantages to having these odd schedules; I have time to do things in the morning before work but I get home too late to cook dinner.

So this morning I put some black beans in the crockpot with bell peppers, garlic, & onions. When I got home from work, dinner was already ready. Also befor... Tue, 21 Aug 2012 22:29:53 EST The Physics of Weight Loss http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5023948 I'm a bit of a science nerd, so when I was reading about weight loss and plateaus this analogy immediately came to mind. Losing weight is like trying to travel at the speed of light. When you first start off the weight loss is typically easier and the closer that you get to your goal weight, the more difficult it becomes to lose those last few pounds. This is similar to traveling at the speed of light because the closer to get to reaching the speed of light the more energy it takes to incr... Mon, 20 Aug 2012 20:26:35 EST Downward Facing Dog http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5021823 I am doing SparkCoach and it was suggested that I include flexibility into my workout routine. So I have decided to get back into yoga after several years. I have definitely lost a lot of the flexibility that I once had, but I am confident that it will slowly come back if I just stick with it. Since I have some congestion from this cold, I have been trying to find low impact activities and yoga has turned out to be a great choice.

I was actually surprised that I was able to do... Sun, 19 Aug 2012 13:06:43 EST Slowly, Slowly, Slowly http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5019989 This cold has totally killed my appetite. Even though I am starting to feel a lot better, I am very congested and haven't been hungry at all. I've been keeping my fluids up and eating chicken soup. But even then, I'm barely getting 1000 calories.

When you are sick, I know that you should listen to your body and not worry so much about tracking food. But I like to stay in the habit, so even though I'm not eating much right now, I won't get out of practice.

Here's to ... Fri, 17 Aug 2012 21:16:47 EST Getting Back on the Horse http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5018606 I still have the lingerings of this cold. I'm much better and gradually getting back into my routine. I started today by going on a short walk on my lunch break. It left me feeling a little winded, so I'm glad i decided to keep it short. I know that I will have to work my way back to where I was, but I am optimistic that I will be jogging again in no time. I will just take things slowly for now, because I don't want to risk over-doing it and making myself sick again. Thu, 16 Aug 2012 20:50:37 EST Guh!
