KRISTEN_SAYS's SparkPeople Blog KRISTEN_SAYS's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community April 2016 Hello friends. Last update was about a year ago where my goal was to lose enough weight to fit into my bridesmaid dress for my friend's wedding in September. Well, I succeeded! The dress fit perfectly, I didn't have to wear Spanx (THANK GOD) and the wedding was wonderful. And now I have gained the weight back since then. I'm back, once again, and I hope to keep this going. Usually what happens is I eat healthy for most of the day and then it all comes crashing down at dinnertime (portion con... Fri, 22 Apr 2016 10:32:39 EST So far, so good! It has been about three weeks since my last blog post. I am still going strong. The junk food is still in my house and I have not touched any of it - cookies, chips, cupcakes cookie cake, Reese's, M&Ms, etc. I don't feel tempted at all, and it feels awesome! I'm still struggling with portion control at dinner. That is the one thing I've always, and probably will, struggle with. However, I'm running most days of the week and I look forward to exercising again. Sunday morning I did my usual 2.2... Wed, 6 May 2015 10:03:24 EST Long time no see! Hello, SparkPeople!

So, here's a rundown of what has happened in the last 34875938475 years since I've been active on SparkPeople.

2014 = weight gain. Beginning of 2015 = more weight gain.

I joined Weight Watchers this past fall. I signed up for a 6-week session where my mom works and lost five pounds in 6 weeks. In January, I signed up again for a 12-week session. My starting weight at the 12-week session was about 165. (YIKES. On the bright side though, my ... Thu, 16 Apr 2015 22:03:51 EST Oh boy! Hi, SP! Quick update. Unfortunately I managed to pack on some pounds over the holidays. I ended my 3+ year relationship right before Thanksgiving, started a new relationship right after Thanksgiving, and I have been spending a lot of time with my new man who loves to cook for me. Between delicious, not-so-healthy meals, skipping the gym, drinking way too much wine, treats and goodies in the break room at work in the days leading up to Christmas and Christmas itself, I had a really hard time r... Fri, 17 Jan 2014 18:37:30 EST Oh...hello there It has been almost six months since I've published a SparkPeople blog, and almost eight months since I've done anything with my weight loss blog on WordPress. I spend most of my day on the computer at work, and I guess the last thing I want to do when I get home is spend even more time at the computer. But now that summer is over and there was snow on the ground this morning (WTF, mother nature??), I know I won't be spending much free time outside (my arse freezes when it drops below Thu, 24 Oct 2013 13:04:53 EST One year of maintenance! Yesterday marked one year since I reached my weight loss goal of 50 pounds. I am proud to say that I have kept it off, and better yet, I am one size smaller than I was a year ago! I promised myself that I will never, ever be the unhealthy, overweight, miserable girl I was 3+ years ago. So far so good! Sun, 5 May 2013 22:13:43 EST Updates Hi friends! So I ended up joining the gym I was interested in - something I never thought I would do. I'm finally getting back into a routine, and I've been dragging my butt to the gym three nights a week after work. I'm proud of myself - my job moved me from the local store 4 miles away from my house (where the gym was on my way home) to the store located 30 miles away (where the gym is NOT on my way home), so I'm happy that I'm making myself go (and for the most part, I am enjoying it). For... Mon, 15 Apr 2013 21:54:42 EST RIP my beautiful Baby My beautiful 14-year-old cat, Baby, passed away peacefully on Tuesday at the veterinarian. He was suffering from oral cancer, and a tumor had developed on the right side of his face, making it very difficult for him to eat and also making him blind in his right eye. It has been a really difficult week, and I think I'm okay until I see little reminders of him around the house and realize that he's not here with us anymore, and then I'm overwhelmed with sadness again. The hardest part is comin... Fri, 15 Mar 2013 22:16:52 EST Gym Membership Options Okay - Today I visited the gym I'm semi-interested in joining. I'll call it Gym 1. I got a tour - there are two pools and a Jacuzzi, plenty of cardio machines, weight machines (which have FitLinxx, which is basically a computerized "trainer" that keeps track of your progress every time you use it), a decent-sized area for free weights, a sauna and classes (most of them you have to pay extra - $3 or $7 per class). For the gym membership, there's a $130 initiation fee, then it's $50 a month. I... Wed, 20 Feb 2013 15:00:01 EST Thinking out loud Hi, friends! It has been a busy week. I started my new job last Monday as a sales associate at a local furniture store. There's a ton of training involved so it's a little overwhelming but overall I think it will work out. As of right now, the earliest I start is 10. That will change to 9:30 once I'm on the floor selling furniture. My issue is that I'm having the hardest time dragging my butt out of bed at 7am for my workout. (I know, it's not terribly early AT ALL.) I was up everyday last su... Sun, 17 Feb 2013 17:24:15 EST Finally! I finally found a job! Starting next Monday, I will be a sales professional in a local furniture store. I'm really excited, and I'll even be working with one of my old friends from elementary school. Since 90% of my clothes are casual, I went shopping yesterday and dropped about $250 on new work clothes. (I WANTED TO CRY. SO MUCH MONEY. But...I love everything I got, and I did get a lot.)

Three blazers, ... Mon, 4 Feb 2013 21:57:47 EST Not feeling too hot... Ugh, I have a pounding headache and my tummy feels weird...I have to babysit two rambunctious toddlers tonight until midnight or so, so I hope I feel better. I'd hate to cancel on the parents, but there's no way I'll be able to keep up with them while feeling this yucky.

I reached 1,000 views on Fit Foodie today, so thank you for contributing to those views, Spark Friends! I've enjoyed blogging, and it has given me something constructive to do while I search for jobs.

I... Fri, 25 Jan 2013 14:15:40 EST I've outdone myself - Blueberry Quinoa Bake & Vegetable Lasagna I bought a box of red quinoa from Wegmans a few months ago and had been searching for recipe ideas. I found a few I was thinking of trying, and then I was like SCREW IT! I'm going to experiment! ...which is what I did.

YUM! I made a Blueberry Quinoa Bake. I posted the recipe on Fit Foodie:

(I also have another new post below that one - Weight Loss... Sun, 20 Jan 2013 14:41:26 EST Good week with lots of food! My best friend was in town, so we pretty much had a cooking marathon all week...because that's what we do. We both tried kale chips for the first time (SO GOOD OMG), we made a light version of Penne alla Vodka, vegan chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting, guacamole, burrito-fajita-taco concoction (the burr-ji-co), Moscato cupcakes, alfredo using avocado and more guacamole...because we love guacamole. So much food. But it was all so good. I miss her already!

I'm having fun wit... Fri, 18 Jan 2013 20:21:57 EST New entry on Fit Foodie

Some of you may have seen the information before. It's late, and I'm tired, and I still have to do some Pilates, so I copy and pasted and tweaked one of my blogs I posted on here in May. Even so, read it, comment, share it! Thanks, friends :) Wed, 16 Jan 2013 23:26:17 EST I made a weight loss blog on wordpress! I wanted to share my story and reach out to others outside of SparkPeople, so I made a weight loss blog today!
So far it's not very impressive, obviously I only started it today, but I hope a lot of people follow it once I get going. I plan to do one entry per day covering topics from nutrition, fitness, overall health and wellness, motivation, recipes, workout ideas, all that fun stuff. I'll let y'all know when I make a post a new entry! Tue, 15 Jan 2013 00:06:47 EST 2013 Goals 1) Save more, spend less. Always use cash, and use credit card only when necessary
2) Keep in touch with friends better
3) Get my own place with my boyfriend
4) Find a full time job (even though I love my current job...most of the time)
5) Start the process of becoming a Certified Personal Trainer
6) Promote my photography through social media, enter photo contests, gallery shows, etc.
7) Paint and draw more - I haven't picked up a paintbrush since graduating in ... Wed, 2 Jan 2013 13:04:52 EST Exciting things that happened in 2012 1. First trip to the ER
2. Reached weight loss goal of 50 pounds
3. Graduated from college
4. Found a job that I love
5. Gave up (most) processed foods
6. Didn't get a single haircut...this was unintentional though.

Bring it on, 2013!

Have a safe and happy new year! Mon, 31 Dec 2012 18:36:13 EST Yeah, so about that whole resisting temptations thing... Xmas recap and pics! So, I thought I had the whole sugar addiction thing under control. And then I made cookies Sunday for my family and my boyfriend's family (and for me). Chocolate chip, peanut butter chip and peanut butter blossoms. Guess what I didn't do? Control myself. One cookie after another after another since Sunday.

Ugh, just look at them. This is the best chocolate chip cookie recipe ever.

I'm still keeping up my... Thu, 27 Dec 2012 13:07:02 EST Resisting temptations Just an update. Last week, I posted a blog about how awesome I feel eating a mostly clean diet, and how my boyfriend gave me 8 individually wrapped Russell Stover chocolates, and how I only ate one and put the rest away in the cabinet. I'm happy to report that I made 8 chocolates last 8 days! I didn't go back for a second chocolate. I wasn't itching to eat more. One was all I wanted.

Monday, my mom and I went up to Rochester to help move my sister back home. My sister is the exact ... Thu, 20 Dec 2012 21:41:53 EST Trying this vlogging thing again A little less awkward than the last one! Although I still feel like I'm talking to myself. Sun, 16 Dec 2012 15:40:03 EST Finally saying bye-bye to "skinny fat" and bad habits I've been on this weight loss/getting in shape thing for almost 3 years. It took me over 2 years to lose 50 pounds, and I know why. My eating habits had improved like crazy over the course of 2 years, but I was still eating a lot of processed food, I wasn't always honest with my nutrition tracker, and I was doing all cardio in the form of running and almost zero strength training. But still, I lost 50 pounds. Yay me. But I was "skinny fat." Yeah, I certainly LOST a lot of fat, but I also lost... Tue, 11 Dec 2012 13:01:10 EST Awkward vlog First vlog just because. Please excuse my hair and my awkwardness. Mon, 10 Dec 2012 13:51:41 EST My kitty :( Some of you probably saw my status yesterday, but Baby's results came back, and he has cancer :( I'm so devastated. He's doing okay now, he's eating a little, drinking his kitty milk with his antibiotics, so for right now he's comfortable. Eventually I'm sure we'll have to put him down, but I don't think it'll be anytime soon. As long as he's taking his antibiotics he should be okay for awhile. Thanks for all of the responses. I'm sorry I haven't been able to get back to everyone, but I do ap... Wed, 5 Dec 2012 14:12:07 EST I got an exercise streak going! I didn't notice it until I looked at my calendar on Map My Run...15 days! Normally I take a rest day once a week. I think I'll keep the streak going, at least 10 minutes a day. And on the days where I feel like I don't want to do anything, I'll do Yoga or Pilates. That's what I did last night - 10 minutes of Pilates, which turned into 20 minutes of Pilates, woohoo! I love streaks.
And sweaty post-workout pictures. Mmmmm unwashed, sweaty hair and shiny face.
<img src="http://photos-... Thu, 29 Nov 2012 16:31:31 EST Update on Baby I just picked Baby up from the vet. He did have a rotten tooth, which the vet extracted. There's still something that "doesn't look good" in his mouth, and the biopsy results will come back within a week. Worst case scenario it could be mouth cancer - I was afraid of that. I'm really upset, but I'm still trying to stay positive. My poor Baby :( Wed, 28 Nov 2012 13:10:02 EST Keep my kitty in your thoughts, please! My cat, Baby, hasn't been acting himself lately. Lethargic, not eating as much, too mellow. Sunday night and this morning, he started to hiss and howl like he was in pain. I called the veterinarian, and she said to bring him in right away, which I did. She tried to look at him, but Baby is vicious when he's at the vet. She said there's something that is hurting him in his mouth somewhere. She's going to sedate him to get a better look. She said it could be serious but it's hard to tell at thi... Tue, 27 Nov 2012 11:06:52 EST GUNSSSSSS (Progress pics of my arms) I've been focusing on my upper body a lot more lately (I CAN DO PUSH-UPS NOW!!!!), and so I thought I'd share some pictures of MAH GUNZ!

Let's take a look at what my former wiggly-jiggly chubby arms looked like:

January 2011, one year into my weight loss, about 40 pounds down:

Sometime this summer, 50 pounds down: <... Sun, 25 Nov 2012 14:37:05 EST Thanksgiving! This year's Thanksgiving was probably the best I've ever had. We hosted, so that was a tad stressful because there were only supposed to be 10 of us, but that quickly doubled. My mom and I panicked that we wouldn't have enough food, but we had plenty. The food was good, and we had a ton of leftovers (SO MUCH LEFTOVER PIE. YESSSSSS). I surprisingly didn't eat as much during dinner! And I only had 2 glasses of wine. But I kind of pigged out with desserts...oh well. We had tons of laughs because... Sat, 24 Nov 2012 16:06:28 EST Considering becoming a personal trainer. Weighing my options. I'm looking at the ACE website where they have self-study material, the cheapest one being $500. Paying $500 for just study material and an exam voucher seems insane. Sure, I may learn the material just fine, but I don't think that it would be as helpful in real-life settings, you know? Another option is to take Principles of Personal Training and Personal Training II at SUCO (where I graduated from in May...I wanted to take these courses but they never fit in my schedule) but that means I ha... Thu, 15 Nov 2012 18:06:55 EST Whoa. (I meant to post this a few days ago. This happened on Sunday while my boyfriend and I were in Ithaca.)

I know that exercise has psychological benefits - reduces stress, anxiety, all that stuff. I never really, and I mean truly, noticed it personally, and I always just simply believed that it was true. And then on Sunday night, literally out of nowhere, I became really upset, my anxiety started to take over, negative thoughts started pouring into my head, I tried my hardest to hold... Wed, 14 Nov 2012 21:51:08 EST Back home from my mini-vaca Boyfriend and I went to Ithaca this weekend. I bought us tickets to see Bill Engvall live for our anniversary so we made a weekend out of it. The weather was beautiful the entire time we were there, which was great. We did lots of walking around Ithaca, went to Buttermilk Falls State Park and walked through some trails there. Ate quite a bit of food that I probably shouldn't have eaten but at least we walked a ton, and I took advantage of the fitness center (which did not have dumbbells, even... Mon, 12 Nov 2012 21:10:09 EST Anyone see this video on yahoo?

ic-conditioning-31039862.html

I just tried the workout with 10 lb dumbbells but did each move four times instead of ten and it was good! Burned 174 calories in 20 minutes. I also marched in place for 30 seconds between each exercise instead of standing still. Try it out!! Thu, 8 Nov 2012 14:17:09 EST I love homemade meals! Last night's dinner was homemade butternut squash and apple soup and a homemade black bean veggie burger. Today for lunch I had homemade vegetarian chili (with tempeh and black beans), and I'm gonna have more soup for snack later on. I'm slowly saying bye-bye to pre-packaged food!

Edit: might as well include the recipes :)

My veggie burger recipe:

l.asp?recipe=1900191

My vegetarian chili recipe:
... Tue, 6 Nov 2012 13:21:09 EST Exercise plan for now For the past few months, my workout routine was this: running, running, running and more running. No strength training. No bueno. Over the summer I did JM's Ripped in 30 and ran every other day. It worked for me. Now my plan is to combine the levels in one day with heavier weights. Friday I did levels 1 and 2 back-to-back and burned over 500 calories. This week and next week I'll do this - combine levels 1 and 2. The following 2 weeks I'll combine levels 2 and 3, and eventually combine 3 and ... Mon, 5 Nov 2012 15:40:40 EST Overdoing it? This week was kind of busy. On Monday I did No More Trouble Zones in the morning then took advantage of the nice weather and ran/jogged/walked 5+ miles. Burned a little over 750 calories, more than half of my weekly goal. Tuesday and Wednesday I was in Rochester visiting my sister and didn't get home until dinnertime. Thursday and yesterday I worked all day and didn't get home until late. I didn't really want to exercise, so I didn't. Now today, it's nice out. Just finished a 6.2 mile run/jog... Sat, 27 Oct 2012 15:16:24 EST Butternut Squash Mac & Cheese Saturday night I made this:

l.asp?recipe=439845

and I loved it. My boyfriend, who is pretty picky, even had seconds. SUCCESS!

I doubled the cheddar cheese, omitted the ricotta, added maybe 1/4-1/3 cup of shredded mozzarella, and just topped it with breadcrumbs (not mixed with oil). Then baked it for 15 minutes uncovered because I... Mon, 22 Oct 2012 22:50:13 EST Uneventful day + amazing video It was a pretty uneventful day so I don't have much to say right now. I had a job interview at the library this morning, and I think it went okay. I went for a 3 mile walk this afternoon to give my poor little legs a break from all of the running I've been doing lately, so I have about 6.25 miles to go for the rest of the week to meet my weekly goal of 20 miles. And that about sums up my day.

I am, however, going to share an amazing performance of an amazing song by one of my favor... Wed, 10 Oct 2012 22:31:31 EST Shopping yesterday - so surprised & happy! If you would have told me three years ago that someday I would be wearing a size small jacket, I probably would have laughed in your face. Yesterday I went shopping and found this wonderful belted trench coat at Penney's. Tried on size small and it was perfect. Bought immediately.

Three years ago I was buying size extra large ... Mon, 8 Oct 2012 12:26:50 EST My tastebuds are beyond happy

The picture doesn't do it justice, but I just made "ice cream" using frozen bananas, peanut butter and cocoa powder. I've seen some recipes around the internet and pinterest, and I finally tried it. It's SO yummy, and I'm glad I finally found something HEALTHY to make when I'm having my crazy ice cream cravings. This is how I made mine:

1 cup frozen banana slices (probably the equivalent of 1 large banan... Fri, 5 Oct 2012 11:26:19 EST Eating healthy doesn't have to be expensive! (Day 2 - with pictures!) Yesterday I posted a blog that estimated the cost of my meals. It drives me NUTS when someone says they can't afford to eat healthy but still eat fast food! My response: ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Yesterday's total cost of my meals was $7.11. About 1800 calories worth of food, pretty healthy, not perfect, but still pretty healthy. Today I took pictures of (almost) everything I ate...just because. So here we go!

BREAKFAST! Total cost = 64 cents
2 cups of coffee: 6 cents total (Big con... Thu, 27 Sep 2012 20:50:51 EST You think eating healthy is expensive? Think again! I've been wanting to do this for awhile. I can't count how many times I have read or heard people say, "Eating healthy is too expensive, so that's why I still eat fast food." You, my friend, are kidding yourself. So as I keep track of everything I eat today, I'm calculating how much, per serving, each food is costing me. (A lot of these costs are estimates - I either don't have or can't find my receipts.) I'll continue to edit this as I eat today, and I'll come up with a final total to show a... Wed, 26 Sep 2012 13:50:20 EST If anyone is interested - workout routine from my body conditioning professor Last fall, I took Body Conditioning for my PE credit. My instructor (the softball coach) loved kicking our butts in class, and this particular routine always left me sore for a few days. She gave us the routine on a little sheet of paper for future reference, and I just found it when I was cleaning! Here it is - we did 2 sets of each

(Warm up) Jog outside for 5 minutes
Side to side lunges (she usually made us do these on our tip toes) - 20-25 reps
Wall sits - 15 seconds b... Tue, 25 Sep 2012 12:15:10 EST Hello, SP :) Life has been kind of boring lately. I recovered from my surgery a week and a half ago (although I still feel twinges of slight pain every now and then, nothing serious) and I'm back to running most days of the week (yay!). I plan on running my first charity race in a few weeks. I'll probably run the 5k since the 10k is a pretty challenging course, and I haven't run that distance yet. My goal is to finish 5k in under 30 minutes, which is doable, right? That's about my average, anyway. I got n... Fri, 21 Sep 2012 22:28:45 EST surgery update Yesterday I had an ovarian cyst removed (and thankfully it was only one). The surgery went well, no complications. However I'm in a lot of pain, and I'm not moving around very well. I'm also not good at lying down and relaxing - I'm one to always be up and doing something. Plus it absolutely kills to get up from lying down. I am getting bored though...I'm not really itching to go back to work since I worked 14 days straight without a day off, but I just wanna do something! I can't even clean ... Tue, 28 Aug 2012 14:04:52 EST Updates and such. I haven't been around SP much this summer. Busy with work and no desire to spend much time on the computer. But I figured I'd post a blog since it has been awhile. So for most of the summer I was doing Jillian Michaels' Ripped in 30 before I went to Florida, which was awesome and butt-kicking. I slimmed down and toned up a little more, went to Florida feeling pretty awesome. I even took walks on the beach in my bikini without a cover up! I never thought I'd have the confidence to do that. But... Sat, 18 Aug 2012 21:20:34 EST Doing my happy dance Went shopping yesterday for denim shorts. Went to American Eagle and grabbed a pair of 2's because they didn't have 4's and tried them on... whaddya know! They fit perfectly!

Sun, 29 Jul 2012 09:44:37 EST Bummed. This week hasn't been so great. My grandpa is in the hospital again. (He told my aunt that he feels like he's dying...but he seems to be doing okay now. By the way, thanks for the well wishes and prayers on my status yesterday.) A friend of my mom and my aunt committed suicide on Tuesday. And yesterday I found out I have to have surgery to remove my ovarian cyst. Great week! Thu, 7 Jun 2012 09:22:02 EST Updates - life and such. With pictures! :) Last weekend was nice - last Friday my boyfriend and I had a date night at one of my favorite restaurants and went mini golfing. Aren't we cute?

Last Saturday the weather was absolutely beautiful (actually the whole weekend was sunny and warm).
