KIMS51's SparkPeople Blog KIMS51's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community At the Halfway Point The year is half over and I am at the half way mark on my weight loss goals. I quit taking my pain meds because the summer heat was making me feel sick with them. However since I have lost this amount of weight the pain is not nearly as severe as I would have expected. I am very happy about that. I only wish the weight loss would be the solution to my problem and not the upcoming surgery in January. Having seen my most recent xrays I know better than to indulge in that little fantasy. ... Sun, 27 Jun 2010 21:09:24 EST Return of an Old Love My knee has been hurting a lot the last week. I decided to just swim for my cardio this week to give it a rest. I went out and bought a pair of swim goggles and a nose clip. Wow, what a difference. Just using these two pieces of equipment has improved my swimming form and ability immensely. I always liked to swim, but now I love it. Also this is an activity I know I can continue up until my upcoming surgery and after my recovery. It just amazes me just how using the right tools during... Mon, 26 Apr 2010 16:55:43 EST Jumping In! My physical therapist has been telling me to include more swimming or water exercises into my program. So I decided to start on just Saturdays. Today I finally made it after work. It was great! I managed to swim 10 laps. It felt so refreshing and just glorious. I need to find another swim cap however, my current one is letting water leak onto my hair-a definite no-no for me. Jeez, when did I become so prissy? Lol! Gradually I would like to include some swimming after my other gym wor... Sun, 11 Apr 2010 00:18:36 EST Making Plans I can't believe I've already lost 17 pounds. I have a ways to go, but this is a good beginning. I have had more pain lately since I have upped my exercise. I hope I can hold out until I get my weight off. I am thinking that if I am down close to my weight range by the end of the year, I will have my hip joint replacement surgery at the beginning of next year instead of waiting until later in the year. I just don't think I can take the pain that much longer. I have good days and bad days... Thu, 18 Mar 2010 23:13:02 EST Sneaky Snacks! Weigh-in day again. I lost 3 lbs last week. No big surprise there. Pretty good for a 51 year old women approaching menopause. I went to the movies yesterday with my husband, my son and one of his friends. I decided I didn't want to be tortured by the smell of that movie popcorn (which I love with tons of butter-of course). So I put sneaky snacks in my purse. I had a small apple, a serving of almonds and several pieces of my favorite soft black licorice tucked away. All accounted for i... Mon, 1 Mar 2010 14:36:54 EST Progress! Today was my weigh in day. Over the years whenever I have lost weight it always follows a similar pattern. I lose a big chunk on one week, then the next week or two I don't lose. Then I start losing again. Last week I lost 5 lbs in one week, so I wasn't expecting anything this week. Because my weight loss is like this I don't consider it a plateau so I don't feel discouraged either. Overall I have lost 10 pounds since I started. I have gone down a jeans size. That is encouraging to m... Mon, 22 Feb 2010 12:47:54 EST Taking Stock Today while working out on the elliptical I thought about the pros and cons I have as I take my weight loss journey. So I decided to make a list.

Cons
Female approaching menopause.
Osteoarthritis with both hip joints needing replacement in the near future.
A very busy life.
A job that makes me be on my feet all day.

Pros
The largest and newest YMCA in my state within 2 blocks of my house and directly on my way home from work.
A good docto... Sun, 14 Feb 2010 12:26:53 EST A new year with spark It's been about a month since my last entry. I'm starting to log more cardio time a week, but I still haven't started any strenghth training. I had surgery (not related to my joints) on the 15th so I've been taking it kind of easy. I'm making small changes as I go so I don't just get burned out (or injured) and fail. I switched to more fruits and veggies and cut out all eating after dinner. I'm also being mindful of everything else I eat and the portion sizes. So far I've only lost 2 lb... Mon, 25 Jan 2010 21:47:03 EST How I got here. Getting overweight and out of shape is a journey. Here is mine. Five years ago I was in great shape. I rode my bike on a wonderful trail often. I looked forward to my rides with the fresh air and oh the challenge of the hills! I logged over 100 miles a week. I did strength training at my local gym. I was eating healthy and I felt great. Except I started to have some pain in my knees, thighs and hips. I just thought that maybe I was overdoing it. We decided to relocate to another cit... Sun, 13 Dec 2009 15:05:39 EST
