I've managed to outwit her so far but she never stops trying. 18

Well....2 Sundays ago my Bible Study Group met as usual for dinner and Bible Study. The lady who was scheduled for dessert decided on an Easter theme. She make little coconut macaroon "nests" with malted milk "eggs"; peanut butter "bales of hay" and a scrumptious concoction made of saltin... Tue, 28 Mar 2017 23:20:28 EST REINING IN MY INNER CHILD 4 I've discovered that my my dear, sweet inner child can be extremely devious and calculating. Recently I've been able to curtail her efforts to sabotage my goals to eat healthy. Now she has taken aim at my other vulnerable spot - the propensity to stay up way past a reasonable bedtime (a residual from working night shifts). She is aware of 2 things: 1. when I stay up late I am more likely to snack on "junk" and sweets; and 29

2. I'm usually too tired the next day to pl... Thu, 16 Mar 2017 16:48:07 EST REINING IN MY INNER CHILD 3 Last week I bought several boxes of a granola bar which was on clearance at a local store. They were only 25 cents per box (due to expire at the end of the month). Now, one would think that the inclusion of popcorn and marshmallow in a granola bar would make me tread cautiously in even buying such an item no matter how cheap it was...but my inner child was ecstatic when she saw them and convinced me that it would be a "healthy snack". Well, to make a long story short, all the bars were gone... Wed, 8 Mar 2017 13:23:48 EST REINING IN MY INNER CHILD, 2 The other day I had a real tug-of-war with my inner child over chocolate and sweets. Did you know that some retailers still have Valentines's Day candy on sale at clearance prices? 50% off. Hearts full of nougat, caramel and fudge - oh my - I'm getting a sugar rush just thinking about it. Well my inner child was ready to snatch up an armful and head to checkout; and believe me it was quite a struggle to prevent her from doing that. This opportunity appealed to two of my loves - a sweet t... Thu, 2 Mar 2017 18:26:47 EST REINING IN MY INNER CHILD I've been "sparking" for over 8 years. I've set S.M.A.R.T. goals; read hundreds of articles; joined dozens of challenges; posted on thousands of threads, blogs, etc; collected over 46,000 spark points with various tracking activities and made many good, supportive spark friends...and I am thankful for all of these because they are evidence that I have been taking this journey to a healthy lifestyle seriously.

Even though I have established many good habits: 91 5... Wed, 22 Feb 2017 12:59:57 EST Why I'm Eating Ice Cream and Cake I lost a good friend last Friday. He had endured many health challenges throughout his 75 years in addition to the cancer that finally took his life. Through it all he managed to maintain a positive attitude and engagement with life. On the Tuesday before he died I was able to visit with him for a few hours. He was lying in his hospital bed, clearly uncomfortable and restless but obviously pleased to see his friends. He had been unable to keep much food or drink down but he asked for a str... Tue, 17 Jan 2017 15:08:44 EST Eight Years of "Sparking", Still Sizzling! This week I reached another milestone at SP - my 8 year Sparkversary! I could have accomplished many things in 8 years: achieved a medical degree; driven over 100,000 miles; had 6 or 7 kids; flown 5 round trips to Mars or accumulated 43,575 spark points (which I did - the spark points that is).

You would think I would have been able to lose 23 lbs of unwanted fat during that time, but, sad to say I am still very much short of that goal. In fact I am just about where I started... Fri, 26 Aug 2016 14:21:31 EST Birthday Blues Here comes yet another birthday, and here comes yet another weight loss goal unrealized.
It would have been a really nice present to myself to get back into my size 8 red dress to celebrate. Instead I have a size 14 two-piece outfit (black to camouflage the bulges). Oh well, it could be worse. Without SP I'm sure I would be in worse shape. Every time I start to get discouraged I check in with my sparkfriends or spark teams to get or give support. So many struggles similar to mine or... Wed, 15 Jun 2016 23:17:06 EST One More Birthday Every year when my birthday rolls around I do a little personal inventory. I look at the goals I've set over the past year and measure the progress I've made. Over the years I've learned to set aside my perfectionist tendencies and give myself more grace. There is so much I am thankful for and feel truly blessed in so many areas. One goal that continues to elude me is reaching my ideal weight. I've been on SP since 2008 and have improved my overall lifestyle considerably: drinking more w... Thu, 2 Jun 2016 19:38:49 EST Making The Case For New Year's Resolutions New Year's Eve has an extraordinary way of making otherwise calm, rational people put on funny hats and jump up and down shrieking at the top of their lungs "Happy New Year". In past years I'd strive to have the house clean, the laundry done and the kitchen sink sparkling before that stroke of midnight as if by some magic those chores would no longer be present in the new year. No such luck! The cleaning, dishes and laundry were just as time-consuming as before.

As for New Year's... Sat, 2 Jan 2016 16:26:26 EST Seven Sparking Years Young Hello Sparkers,

Hard to believe it was 7 years ago this week that I joined SP. SEVEN YEARS! This should be a good time to take the opportunity to look back on the past 7 years and count up all the successes and progress I've enjoyed as a SP member. Hmmmm.....? On the face of it - not a very good report. I'm actually 7 lbs heavier than when I started, and most of the entrenched bad habits I had hoped would be gone are still stubbornly hanging around.

Am I disappointed... Sat, 22 Aug 2015 16:58:23 EST TALK THE WALK AND WALK THE TALK Spring is just around the corner (I can tell because my allergies are starting to act up). The days are getting longer and warmer. Yikes! Soon I won't be able to hide under all those layers of clothes. Can you believe bathing suits are already showing up in the stores? Now I have to concentrate of losing all that "holiday" fat. Unfortunately, although my pant size is at an all time high, my motivation to exercise is at an all time low. I had joined a weight loss challenge in January wit... Tue, 3 Mar 2015 17:01:35 EST COLD TO THE BONE! Brrrr! I won't say I "hate" the cold. Hate is too strong a word. But I definitely dislike it. I used to live "up North" in NY and dreaded the coming of winter.

How much snow will we get this year?
How cold will it be in the morning when I get up?
Will my car start?

I thought I left all that behind when I moved to the "Sunshine State" but it gets cold here too. I feel it right down to my bones and it really puts a damper on my motivation to exercise. I just... Wed, 4 Feb 2015 11:52:32 EST SHARING MY FEARS OK, I know I said "no resolutions" in my last blog, but I would like to make this one. For 2015, instead of letting my mind marinate in thoughts of anxiety, guilt, frustration or fear - I'm going to share. For too long I've attempted to figure things out for myself, mistakenly thinking it was a sign of weakness to expose your weakness to the world. Even though I've been a member of SP for over 6 years and have posted and blogged, it has been sporadic. I realize I need the support, encourag... Mon, 5 Jan 2015 15:46:49 EST New Year Revolution - not Resolution. Joined the Winter 5% Weight Loss Challenge due to kick off on New Year's Day. Seems like such a cliché - that's one of the top resolutions for most people - and the first to broken long before the first buds of Spring open up.

I wasn't going to join at first. Too many unsuccessful years tend to make me cynical. "This time I'm going to do it! This time will be different! This time....!"

The fairy tale ends "happily ever after" but real life is not so easy. Sometimes ... Mon, 22 Dec 2014 22:38:55 EST SHORT AND SWEET 2014 has not been the best year. I've regained most of the weight (actually all of the weight) I lost., and was feeling very discouraged until I got an invitation to join a new team next month with the goal of losing 5% over 8 weeks.

I know, it is such a cliche to start a weight loss challenge at the beginning of a new year but there is something to be said for that unmistakable feeling of motivation and momentum which seems to grip hundreds of thousands of people, and 5% seems ... Mon, 15 Dec 2014 03:11:46 EST Six Year Sparkversary I joined Spark People in 2008 and -SURPRISE- I'm still here! The surprise is for myself. I am not noted for longevity on any site. Usually after 2-3 years interest wanes and I move on; so there must be something really special about SP.

I was hoping I'd be at my goal weight by now. I've been up and down; discouraged and fired up; lazy and motivated. At least I have not gone above my start weight (163); I've been as low as 142 but watched it creep back up when I stopped doing... Thu, 21 Aug 2014 22:12:41 EST Not a Good Time For A New Challenge. I started round 2 of the "Tame Your Sweet tooth Challenge" about 2 weeks ago but my life has gotten so hectic of late that I haven't been able to give it much attention. So I've decided to defer it to a later date when I can concentrate and focus better, (probably after Labor Day)

Hope everyone is having a great summer! Wed, 23 Jul 2014 16:52:40 EST Fudge, anyone? I am 5 days into round 2 of my "Tame Your Sweet Tooth Challenge" (I took this challenge about 1 year ago with pretty good success). At home I did not have any problem staying away from sweets. Away from home it was a different story. Meals in restaurants and a road trip over the past weekend really did me in : ( I found a place which sold about 10 different flavors of fudge, including key lime pie (my favorite). There was too much dipping into the box to where the "box" became a "servi... Mon, 14 Jul 2014 15:28:01 EST TAMING MY SWEET TOOTH, ROUND 2 It has been a rather disappointing year. I had hoped to be at my goal weight by now. I've been a member of SP for almost 6 years but my weight continues to fluctuate as does my motivation. One big problem has always been my consumption of sweets. All manner of sweet treats: chewy, creamy, crunchy will eventually find their way into my mouth. (I have enriched the pockets of several dentists over the years.) Last year I took the "Tame Your Sweet Tooth Challenge" and did quite well, but no... Wed, 9 Jul 2014 11:12:50 EST CAN SERIOUS EXERCISE ALSO BE FUN? I came across an interesting thread today. Someone wanted to know if "serious" exercise could also be "fun". It started me thinking about my own views and attitudes about exercise. It has undergone quite an evolution since I joined Spark People about 5 years ago.

Initially my enjoyment of exercise was on par with a visit to the dentist. It was always a struggle to get in even 3 days/week. I joined a gym and for the first 2-3 years I literally threw my money away by going so inf... Mon, 28 Apr 2014 15:54:48 EST LENT: A TIME TO ADD AS WELL AS SUBTRACT The season of Lent is about to begin. In the Catholic Church the period between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday is dedicated to prayer , fasting and setting aside money to give to the poor. It is a period of deep reflection and self-denial which will hopefully produce a greater depth of spirituality and appreciation for all the gifts we receive from God. Last year I decided to take a hiatus from SP as part of a general decision to cut back on computer time (which was really getting out of ... Mon, 3 Mar 2014 14:07:47 EST Valentine for One Valentine's Day is approaching. The store's are overflowing with heart-shaped boxes of candy, fragrant bouquets, adorable plush toys, and everything guaranteed to spark up the romance between you and your honey. But what if you don't have a honey? Very few options out there for the single lady who is unattached. It's hard to tell yourself that you are special when society tells you that you are lacking. My closest family is 600 miles away, and I don't have any pets, and most of my frien... Thu, 6 Feb 2014 17:11:29 EST No Resolutions - Just Good Choices Goodbye 2013. I hope I shall remember the lessons I learned from you and take them into the New Year. One big lesson I learned is that I need the support and accountability of my friends to help me reach my goals. It has been too easy to let things slide on my own and I have regressed over the past few months. Surprisingly I am not as discouraged as I expected I would be. Somewhere in the back of my mind were the memories of all the little successes and changes for the better that I have... Sat, 4 Jan 2014 00:10:32 EST Four Year Sparkversary Wow! This is a tremendous milestone for me. I have never been a person known for "stick-to-it-tive-ness" so being an active member of Sparkpeople for 4 years is a real accomplishment. When I started out I was "kicking it at 56", now I am still "kicking it at 60" For a while it felt like it was "kicking me". I was gagging while trying to drink all those cups of water. Exercise was my main nemesis. There were countless cycles of: exercise - pain - pain goes away - slack off exercise - st... Sat, 18 Aug 2012 16:39:01 EST "SWEET TOOTH CHALLENGE" DAY 30 "And the winner is......." WooHoo! I have completed the Tame Your Sweet Tooth Challenge!

These last few days have been a little tough but I was able to pass up the majority of temptations and I have definitely noticed a change in the way I perceive sweetness.

Some things, like jam and icing are way too sweet for me now. It almost feel as if it would make me sick. I'm using less sugar in my tea and eating unsweetened cereals. I know I have only won the battle, not the war so I will have to be ... Fri, 8 Jun 2012 20:24:17 EST SWEET TOOTH CHALLENGE DAY 25 - Heading into the home stretch! I am on Day 25 of the "TAME YOUR SWEET TOOTH CHALLENGE" heading into the homestretch. This is the most dangerous time. I have an uncanny way of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. But I keep telling myself, "Self, if you can make it 25 days, you can do 5 more." Just 5 more. And then what? Just keep it going - unofficially. Thank goodness it's Summer and I can indulge my "sweet tooth" with all the fresh fruits I want (within reason of course).

I still have not decide... Sat, 2 Jun 2012 15:24:24 EST SWEET TOOTH CHALLENGE DAY 21 "HELP! THEY'RE AFTER ME!" This is day 21 of the "Sweet Tooth Challenge". It's really getting tough now. The old "tapes" are starting to kick in and it is becoming harder and harder to drown them out. Usually when I reach a certain point where I've made significant progress and seem to be vanquishing those old bad habits, the "tapes" start:

"You never finish what you start"
"It's not going to work this time either"
"you're not strong enough" etc., etc., etc.

This is actually stres... Tue, 29 May 2012 13:56:29 EST SWEET TOOTH CHALLENGE DAY 18 "The shoe finally dropped" Hello again,

I'm on day 18 of the "Tame Your Sweet Tooth Challenge". Well the shoe finally dropped. I was expecting some glitch to occur. Things were going just a little too smoothly. Last night at bedtime, I snuggled under the covers to read for a while like I usually do. I had a bag of "Lemonheads" next to me intending to suck on a couple - and ended up popping them in 3 and 4 at a time. These are pea-sized lemon lavored hard candies meant to be sucked on. I ended up chew... Sat, 26 May 2012 12:25:16 EST SWEET TOOTH CHALLENGE DAY 14 - Thoughts that make you go.....mmmm! Hi Everyone,

Can't believe I'm almost half-way through this "Tame Your Sweet Tooth Challenge" This is actually Day 14. I've had very few cravings for sweets For a snack I usually eat fruit ( apple, banana, dried apricots) Today I had an orange. Remarkably I am not craving sweets when I eat them. I just have it to tide me over til the next meal.

Tracking all my meals was a bit tedious at first. I had tried tracking before but usually only put it 1 or 2 meals, an... Tue, 22 May 2012 20:46:46 EST "SWEET TOOTH CHALLENGE" Day 10 - "Kicking the devil off my shoulder" Hi Everyone,

I'm on Day 10 of the "Tame Your Sweet Tooth Challenge", one-third of the way completed. The Easter candy is still unopened and the sweet cravings have been minimal. I credit this mostly to always eating breakfast and not letting more than 3-4 hours elapse before the next meal. I have also been focusing on eating "mindfully", sitting at the dining table not in front of the TV or computer. I start with a word of "thanks" to God for His provision and then focus on all ... Fri, 18 May 2012 11:53:40 EST Sweet Tooth Challenge Day 6 The Fuse is Lit! The is day 6 of the sweet tooth challenge. The Easter candy is still out of sight and unopened. I've hardly given a thought. Aside from a couple of Tootsie rolls I haven't had any candy. It seems that the fresh fruit is sufficiently sweet to keep me satisfied. Funny thing, I have always loved fruit but never used to think of fruit when I wanted "sweets". Hopefully I can make that transition in my mind and make it permanent.

I have also noticed that I am not experiencing that ... Mon, 14 May 2012 20:24:02 EST "SWEET TOOTH CHALLENGE" Day 3 A good start This challenge has really started off well. This is day #3 and I have had no cravings. I think the main reason is that I am being scrupulous about eating meals on time so I never feel hungry.
I decided to keep the "ticking time bombs" (see previous blog) with the expectation that they will turn out to be harmless duds. In addition, I am developing a greater appreciation for the sweetness of fruit. It really is satisfying. This am I had a yogurt parfait for breakfast which include... Fri, 11 May 2012 10:45:21 EST "SWEET TOOTH CHALLENGE" Day 2 Ticking Bomb I joined the "Sweet Tooth Challenge" yesterday, and today I found TWO bag of unopened Easter candy in the bottom of the fridge. YIKES!! My first instinct was to get rid of them.....but then I thought "if they stay closed, I have nothing to fear." I would like to prove to myself that I can stay in control and choose to do the right thing. I put a little note on them that says, "Do Not Open Until After the Challenge" one bag has dark chocolate mini eggs (which I love) and the other has p... Thu, 10 May 2012 12:14:49 EST Taming the "Sugar Monster" I don't write many blogs or join many sparkpeople challenges because I am notorious for not completing things I start. However, today when I logged on I discovered a new team with a new challenge that is just what I need , the "Tame Your Sweet Tooth Challenge". I've overindulged with sugar most of my life and I have the added pounds and dental work to prove it. Even knowing the damage it is causing has not been enough to keep it in check. My inner child feels entitled to indulge and th... Wed, 9 May 2012 12:58:15 EST A " FORK" IN THE ROAD About 6 months ago I set what I considered a reasonable weight loss goal of about 28 lbs to coincide with a milestone birthday. At the time I felt very positive and motivated and was doing very well for the first two or three months; I was making steady progress and feeling very much in control. Then something happened.

I'm not sure exactly why, but my engine started to lose steam. The late night snacking reappeared; the exercise excuses started popping up, and, to make a long s... Sat, 28 Apr 2012 17:16:12 EST SAD END FOR THE "SENATOR" Some of you may have heard the news about a tragic occurrence this past Monday. The "Senator" reportedly the oldest pond cyprus tree in the world was found burning on Monday night and there was little that the responding firefighters could do to save it.

This tree had been a beloved landmark and tourist attraction in Central Florida since 1929 when President Calvin Coolidge dedicated the park which had been built around it. The tree itself was named after Florida Senator Overstree... Wed, 18 Jan 2012 19:37:32 EST THREE YEARS AND STILL GROWING Celebrating a 3 yr anniversary with SP is a real mile stone for me. In the past I have joined other similar sites which are now only a collection of discarded usernames and forgotten passwords. SP is really something special.

I think the most important lesson I've learned is that there is so much more to being healthy than just a number on a scale or dress size. I'm still not thrilled with what I see in the mirror and I'm still hoping to get back into a size 8, but gradually ... Fri, 19 Aug 2011 13:58:32 EST A NASTY ENCOUNTER WITH A PERSIMMON My mouth got a nasty surprise when I took a bite of a persimmon yesterday. This was a case of "not enough information". Let me give a bit of background. Two years ago while visiting my sister in Louisiana I got my first taste of a persimmon from off her own tree. It was love at first bite! It became one of my new favorites. Unfortunately it was near the end of the season so I only got a few more.

The following year she sent me a box full and I was in "Heaven". This year her ... Sat, 11 Dec 2010 14:36:33 EST Winning the Holiday Game I've stopped making resolutions for the new year a long time ago because it seemed pointless to keep repeating the same thing over and over.

2006 LOSE WEIGHT

2007 LOSE WEIGHT

2008 LOSE WEIGHT

Kind of monotonous isn't it.

I used to dread the holidays since I thought weight gain was inevitable for me.
Sure there are more goodies around and opportunities to eat, and sure the daily pace is more hectic leaving less time to exercise... Fri, 26 Nov 2010 13:04:04 EST MINDSET OVER MATTER We are getting awfully close to the midpoint of 2010 and I am nowhere near where I had hoped to be on the scale by now. (Heavy sigh)! I know the scale is not the only monitor for progress and I have seen other signs of progress. I like being "regular" with all the fruits and veggies and my skin looks much brighter being "bathed" from the inside with lots of water. But important numbers (BP, BMI) remain in the danger zone.

There is one significant change which has evolved over th... Wed, 26 May 2010 18:54:58 EST BACK TO SQUARE ONE Oh rats! Just when I thought I was on the verge of breaking through my plateau - I started gaining again. It's no mystery. I've been eating as if food is a new experience and I have to try everything I see.
Groan??? My "fat" clothes are tight on me, and since I refuse to buy anything larger than what I have now; if this keeps up I'll be naked!

Every time I see myself making progress, I do something to sabotage the effort. It's like I lose my mind and all the good intenti... Tue, 16 Mar 2010 21:15:58 EST BOTH ENDS OF THE HORSE Yikes! the New Year is already 2 weeks old. Looking back on the last 2 weeks I can honestly say I've made progress - well partly. The problem is : although I have been very consistent with my exercise routine, my meal planning seems to have disappeared down a "black hole", so no surprise that my weight has been creeping up.

Now I'm smart enough to know that I can't burn off all those extra calories by exercise alone, but somehow I feel entitled to eat whatever I want as a reward ... Thu, 14 Jan 2010 15:24:56 EST New Year's Non-Resolutions New Year's Non-resolution

I stopped making New Year's resolutions years ago because they were usually broken before the ink was dry. However, it is hard to resist the burst of enthusiasm and renewed motivation which the start of a New Year brings. Like many of you I have reviewed the successes and failures of the past year and have made adjustments; like planning my exercise sessions for early in the day.

Change of any kind is hard enough, and very often something happe... Wed, 6 Jan 2010 19:27:22 EST Walking on Sunshine Now that we are in late Autumn, with Winter fast approaching, I am preparing myself for the inevitable "depression" which plagues me this time of year. It's called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD ) a mood disorder related to diminished exposure to sunlight. This year I am trying to be proactive by making sure to get early morning exposure to sunlight or use a light box on cloudy days. The most important weapon in my mood arsenal is to exercise early in the day. I am feeling much more "up"... Sun, 15 Nov 2009 15:33:59 EST I Don't Know What I'd Do I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have SP. I joined in August of'08 mainly because it had a lot of cool stuff, and it was FREE. I had been a member of several online weight loss sites in the past, but usually only lasted a month or two before the novelty wore off. The idea of posting your personal information was uncomfortable and made me feel too vulnerable. Even with SP I joined a few teams but rarely posted, and it took months before I set up my spark page.

I've alway... Sat, 11 Apr 2009 21:52:55 EST
