KELMOM23's SparkPeople Blog KELMOM23's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community End of a goal, start of a new one Today was day 33 of my exercise streak which consisted of #20minutesofrunning each day. This was the result of a challenge by my sister-in-law to run for 20 minutes every day in April. Tomorrow I am taking a planned day off of running but will be walking instead. It would be great to get in 10,000 steps during the course of the day! Thursday I will be timing a mile run to see if or how much my pace has improved. The last timed mile was 9:47. Starting this weekend, we'll jump into about w... Tue, 2 May 2017 14:39:47 EST reboot my routine I just need to reboot my excercise routine...will I be active tomorrow? Yes, we are planning a day at the water park! Wed, 23 Apr 2014 21:00:30 EST Fitness Goal for February/March A few weeks back I decided to incorporate running 3x/week instead of just walking during my workout.
I was able to run 3 times around the park near our house which turns out to be 1 mile. So, it takes 1/2 mile to get there, I usually spend 30 minute at the park (5-6 times around the park), and then another 1/2 mile home.
I then started increasing my distance running, maintaining the increase for a few runs before adding more distance.
This week I'm up to 5 laps (1.67 miles) wi... Wed, 26 Feb 2014 11:27:31 EST Meals and exercise Some people have particular foods they eat before working out. For example, my hubby loves to eat sweet potatoes the evening before a morning race and needs a banana the morning of...
I just know I can't skip breakfast and that I need my protein to start the day. It may come in the form of yogurt with almonds and raisins mixed in or a couple of fried eggs, and I always eat those with a piece of fruit.

I've tried to stay away from breakfast cereals because they usually contain ... Tue, 25 Feb 2014 10:35:10 EST Weight Goal I would like to drop eight pounds by the end of April. That's less than a pound a week, which seems realistic. Losing just 4 pounds would put me at a previously achieved weight which I would also consider a worthy goal.
They say it's a good idea to write down your goals. That is one that I have.
Another is increasing (slowly) the distance I run during my exercise time. This week I'm at roughly 1.5 miles while walking the remainder of my 45-60 minutes workout.
My hubby, mrthnda... Tue, 18 Feb 2014 13:50:27 EST Focusing on the positives This week I saw the scale move :)
Last night I participated in an energetic, enjoyable worship & prayer service that incorporated everyone from the kids to the adults.
Today our family spent time together during an outing to an incredible outdoor area where there was swimming, walking, and exploring. I got to take pictures and be in the great outdoors breathing the fresh air. Sat, 1 Feb 2014 20:40:22 EST Fitness Goal For the past week, since January 13th, to be exact, I have been logging my food consistently. Being strict and disciplined in this area can only help me. My mom got me hooked on green smoothies* over the holidays which is maybe partly why I didn't show any weight gain over the 3 weeks we were traveling. However, I have gained about 6 pounds this past year, too much for my liking. I'd like to lose them again!
This is why I need to bump it up a notch when it comes to exercise. I think maki... Wed, 22 Jan 2014 21:33:54 EST Gratefulness I am grateful for family and friends because they are my support and community.

What are you grateful for today? Mon, 13 Jan 2014 12:29:00 EST What inspires ME to workout? I feel most inspired to work out when:
1. My hubby is planning to, and we can work out together
2. I'm at my kids' flag football practice and I have 2 hours set aside there at the park.
3. The weather is cool (not cold or hot) and I can walk outside.
4. There are others around me who are interested in exercising.
5. I'm by myself in the house and can put on a workout video without interruption.

What reasons inspire YOU to workout? Fri, 10 Jan 2014 07:18:58 EST what to do... With those old, too big clothes???
Well, when I have some, I'll probably pitch them... No need to keep them around. I like the idea of simpler living anyway. Less just seems like "more" to me lately.
What will you do with your old, too-big clothes? Wed, 8 Jan 2014 21:22:49 EST Improvements Developing and practicing healthy habits improve my general outlook on life. I feel better when I make a decision to exercise. I feel better choosing NOT to drink sugary sodas and juices. And when I control portion sizes, my body feels better.
How has developing healthy habits improved your life? Fri, 3 Jan 2014 08:38:13 EST Last day of Plateau-Busting Program It's hard to believe that I have been on this program for 4 weeks. However, I think about a week of it was me debating whether or not I wanted to pay for Sparkcoach. So, I don't know if I got the full benefit of the program.

The best thing I can take away from the program is the idea that there can be a positive outlook on "victories" that have nothing to do with the scale. And, I am glad for that because the scale really didn't move at all for me. I'm OK with that because I a... Fri, 27 Dec 2013 22:21:32 EST 10 pounds left to go So if I picture those last 10 pounds falling off . . . good feeling. I image my jeans being loose, my shirts and sweaters falling straight down instead of having a little bulge, and myself walking just a little bit straighter.
How will you feel after achieving your weight loss goal? Mon, 23 Dec 2013 19:55:46 EST What will I do to change my life for the better? I am starting to make lists, so that I can relieve a little stress in preparing to travel for the holidays. I'm hoping that seeing items crossed off will be motivating and helpful overall in accomplishing the goals I set for myself.

How will you change your life for the better today? Sat, 21 Dec 2013 10:48:48 EST Goal for this week We are traveling. Nuf said, right?
I want to keep my rhythm with spark people and sparkcoach. I'm hoping to have internet connection each day in order to login daily, enter food, etc. The holidays don't mean I need to pause until the festivities are done. Rather, it is a time to plan ahead and practice making good choices!
How will you stay on track this month? Thu, 19 Dec 2013 23:48:38 EST Relationship with Food If I were to rate my relationship with food between 1-10, I would give myself an 8.
I feel that I do fairly well when it comes to putting meals together and staying within calorie range. I eat a good breakfast, 3 meals a day plus a snack or two on some days. I used to eat go-to was sweets, but I've since worked on that, replacing sweets with fruit and/or working on the cause for my cravings.

Where I could use improvement:
*eat more of a variety of vegg... Tue, 17 Dec 2013 17:50:57 EST With one extra hour I would Filter out and organize my stuff! Sun, 15 Dec 2013 22:50:19 EST Habit to focus on I think I can be fairly disciplined when it comes to calorie intake. If I were to focus on one area to improve in, I would say getting in more cardio and/or adding in strength training. Today my hubby and I walked at a nice clip for 3.25 miles. I had in my head to meet or exceed my sister-in-law's run today. Kind of a virtual challenge, if you will. She and her hubby made a plan to run 1 mile a day for a month. But 3.5 miles twice a week would also count. Maybe that will inspire you, too, thi... Fri, 13 Dec 2013 00:43:11 EST 1-sentence assessment I am feeling empowered with the freedom to change up my exercise and incorporate strength training, reminded that with just a few more minutes each day I can strengthen specific muscle groups.

Ok, so it was a longer-ish sentence... Wed, 11 Dec 2013 18:43:35 EST My goal for this week Stay within my calorie range for 7 can be day 1!
If I exercise more, I can eat more. Tue, 10 Dec 2013 18:39:56 EST 1 sentence assessment I am feeling confident that with consistency I can push past this plateau! Sun, 8 Dec 2013 10:07:53 EST PBB Portion size Today's task was taking this quiz and posting the results:

Portion Distortion Quiz SparkPeople Nutrition Quiz

Quiz Completed
You scored 12 of 16 correct on this quiz.
Perfect Pro-Portions
You know a thing or two about portions, and that's important when it comes to maintaining a healthy weight. Way to go!
Share this quiz with your friends and challenge them to beat your score!

I think I was tired...:-/

On a happier note, I walk... Tue, 26 Nov 2013 00:11:35 EST Day 2 PBB (plateau-busting blog) It's hard to write about things we like about our body. But that is the task today. So, I'd have to say my hair. It's naturally curly with red tones...used to be auburn. Right now I'm "blessed" with white hairs which I'd like to think are creating natural highlights :) I'm pretty content with my height as well, although I do enjoy wearing a "wedge" or high heels from time to time. Sat, 23 Nov 2013 21:31:30 EST 28-day Plateau Busting Program I finally clicked on the spark coach button to see what it was all about. I've been a member of sparkpeople for awhile and have utilized the various tools to achieve my weight loss goals. But, this coaching thing was new, and I thought maybe it was a paid program. But it is FREE, and you get more sparkpoints for completing the daily check-in!
For several weeks, and maybe months, I have felt stuck at about 10 pounds over where I'd like to be. I am not an unhealthy weight, but it is accumu... Fri, 22 Nov 2013 09:53:28 EST 2 1/2 weeks of no flour, no sugar I'm still hanging in there - but, better than that, I'm seeing some noticeable differences in how I look and how others see me. My mom and I talked via Skype and she thought I had looked thinner in a recent picture I had taken with my son. Also, my hubby told me he saw that I had thinned out in my face a bit. These are nice comments that let me know I am on the right track.

I met another Mom here in town who has a stricter diet than me - she doesn't do meats or dairy either! ... Sun, 11 Mar 2012 00:03:08 EST Joined the 4 week Sugar Detox team! I am already 2 weeks into this challenge, although I officially joined the team today. How fortuitous to find a group facing similar challenges that I can encourage and be encouraged by . . .

I have been tracking my food (almost) daily for the past 2 weeks and those who are interested can view my food tracker. Also, I walk at least 5 days a week, which is also logged and can be viewed on my fitness tracker.
<... Tue, 6 Mar 2012 14:30:48 EST T.G.I.F. (Day 10 of Lent - No flour, no sugar) Most people look forward to the weekend. I guess for them it means no more work week and "hello" to sleeping in, spending time with friends and having fun.
Weekends can mean that for me, too, but it can also mean that the routine goes out the window and along with it a little of the discipline that routine brings. So, I may have to work a bit harder on the weekends. My kids are home, we have various activities that we're involved in, and the "break" of the weekend can't mean a break ... Fri, 2 Mar 2012 11:03:43 EST Lent: Day 6 (Monday) 273 You know how Mondays are. Back to the routine, the daily grind. But sometimes you get thrown a curve ball, like when your car breaks down or someone in the household is sick, causing you to kick it up a notch.
So, hubby's down for the count with an infection. None of us are often sick, so it kind of surprises you when you know someone isn't feeling well or has caught a bug. The other family members pitch in and help carry the load.

26 As I am wri... Mon, 27 Feb 2012 19:49:03 EST Lent: Day 4 (Saturday ) Interestingly enough, after a good night's sleep (about 7 hours or so), I woke up with another headache. But I decided to work through the pain. It wasn't a migraine, just a headache. That made things a bit frustrating for me while I was making breakfast and trying to use a new recipe and dealing with a non-stick skillet that was NOT non-stick!

So, after enjoying the end result - a Spanish omelette - my family left for some morning activities while I cleaned up the kitchen. B... Sun, 26 Feb 2012 00:21:20 EST Lent: Day 3 Getting over a headache was the biggest hurdle of the day. It started last night around 8 or so and lasted all night, through the morning, into the afternoon. I finally took a Tempra around 3:00 and it was gone by about 3:30. I would have rather had it go away on its own, but we had 2 more events going on and I needed to be able to interact/listen well.
The only time during the day that it subsided on its own was during my morning walk which was a bit longer today, about 3 1/2 miles. ... Fri, 24 Feb 2012 23:48:10 EST What I'm giving up for Lent On Ash Wednesday, I decided to give up white flour and sugar for the season of Lent, a time when many people think about starting over, repenting, reflection, and focusing on their relationship with God.

I am not Catholic, which is the group of people that largely identifies with the season of Lent and its restrictions and/or purpose of denying one's self by abstaining from meat certain days between now and Easter Sunday.

I am, however, a follower of Christ. And, thro... Fri, 24 Feb 2012 07:55:50 EST What a cool month. So, today is the first day of February, a month with exactly 4 weeks in it. It seems like a great goal-setting month. For me, January with it's resolutions comes too soon after the holidays and days off for my kids - it almost surprises me. So, although I have been thinking of goals and resolutions and the like, getting out to exercise a few times a week, and trying to eat healthy, I have yet to hunker down and write things out.

Side note: I lost my voice Sunday evening (2 days ag... Tue, 1 Feb 2011 13:22:18 EST December Renewal November was a huge month for us. My hubby ran a marathon on the first of the month with a PR. 57 We got a miniaturize schnauzer puppy. We had the opportunity to travel to IN and PA to see family for the Thanksgiving holiday.
We feel truly blessed for all of these things and so much more.
December began yesterday with a "normal" school day, a... Wed, 2 Dec 2009 07:51:53 EST Time off? I guess you could say that I've taken some time off in my activity on the SparkPeople site, but have tried to continue the healthy habits I have learned along the way.
One area that I have lost momentum in is the area of exercise. A government site I visited challenges adults to maintain 30 minutes of exercise a day. I don't think our routine will ever be routine (if you know what I mean), but I realize I still need to schedule in the time to stay fit.
One way I started is that ... Tue, 13 Oct 2009 09:51:44 EST Two months of craziness! I'm starting to feel like the count on Sesame Street . . . ah-ha-ha . . .

We have now been in our house for about a week. There is still a little smoke smell in the living room and our refrigerator doesn't stay cold enough (someone is supposed to come tomorrow morning), but overall things have gone well. The boys love their bunk beds and our oldest can't put down her books that she is tracking for her summer reading program. My hubby is keeping fit as he continues to train for t... Sat, 25 Jul 2009 00:29:55 EST One month of craziness! We are in a huge transition - moving from Mexico back to the US. Today we're getting connection at McD's where I chose the grilled chicken Caesar salad and used just a smidgen of dressing :-) with water to drink.
So, needless to say, logging in and participating on SparkPeople has been difficult at best.
Hoping to be more consistent once we get some internet access. Mon, 13 Jul 2009 15:12:05 EST Hope to recover quickly . . . after a fall off a rip stik (newer type of skateboard). We met some friends in the park and their son brought his rip stik. They look so cool! My whole family had to try it out, of course. Before leaving the park, I thought I'd give it another try as it wasn't in use at the moment. Dave told me later that he was thinking how football players generally injure themselves during a last ditch effort, giving it all they've got. But then thought - no, Kelly is doing good . . .
<i... Sat, 13 Jun 2009 10:43:01 EST New Challenges Today is National Running Day. Had you heard that? My hubby informed me and decided to plan an exercise day together instead of him getting up early to run and me walking (dare I say running) in the evening.
How did we celebrate? Well, we visited the ecological park in Mérida, Mexico where we currently live and walked about 1/2 mile together before he started on his 7-miler. I, on the other hand, planned on a 45 minute walk, figuring on at least 3 miles. I also am challenging myself... Wed, 3 Jun 2009 12:45:13 EST Time Flies . . . There has been no blogging for over a week. It is not that I have fallen off the wagon on this May Challenge, but I have been occupied with mandatory medical studies that are needed for our overseas ministry. Between our 3 kids, my hubby, and me, the hospital has become an all too common environment. I am happy to say that we have seen positive results, though.

Compared with 5 years ago, my triglycerides are down from 149 to 51 and my cholesterol has come into the normal ran... Thu, 28 May 2009 13:10:46 EST Days 13-17 - Pressing on Ok, something hit me on Thursday during my walk in the park - no, not a ball or a tree branch . . . allergies. I thought it was from the fumes they were using to repair the streets in the neighborhood, but now I'm not so sure. It could be tree pollen. My sniffles and congestion and headache continued through Saturday before letting up a little. 134 Despite the general yucky feelings, I forced myself to get out and exercise and continue with the May challenge. Sunday I was feel... Tue, 19 May 2009 14:02:59 EST Tuesday, Day 11 and Wednesday, Day 12 12 days into the May challenge and doing great!

Tuesday: Do the Seated Upper Body Band Workout
+ 30 minutes cardio of your choice. 248
Challenge today was including a salad in your day. I read the article about adding low-cal salads to one of your meals so that less of the high calorie food is eaten - for example, pasta.

on_articles.asp?id=649

Well, we didn't have any lettuce, so my hubby offered t... Wed, 13 May 2009 22:13:51 EST Days 7-9 Continuing the May Challenge has definitely been a challenge for me. I am not one to exercise every day. What has slipped a bit is my eating with Mother's Day weekend and all. Now that we are back to a somewhat normal schedule with the kids back in school, I can focus again on my food choices.

Saturday: Do the Pilates Abs Workout Video 248

Sunday: Do the 10-Minute Cardio Kickboxing Workout 248

Monday: Do the 8-Minute Lower Body Workout... Mon, 11 May 2009 10:46:51 EST Days 5 & 6 Thursday: Do the 5-Minute Lower Body Band Workout
+ 30 minutes cardio of your choice. 248
I walked 2 miles in 1/2 hour, played tag with my kids for about 10 minutes or so in the park and walked another 10 minutes with the kiddos back to the house.
Challenge today was walking with music which I typically do anyway :-)

Sun was in the boys' eyes . . . this was after the game of tag!

F... Fri, 8 May 2009 15:56:28 EST Days 3 & 4 I picked up a resistance band - it is purple! I'm glad I found one for less than $8 even.
Here are my results with the Challenge:

Tuesday: Do the Seated Upper Body Band Workout
+ 30 minutes cardio of your choice. 248
Challenge: extra wall push-ups - not too tough, I did those after the Upper Body workout.
Wednesday: Do the Crunchless Core Workout
+ 30 minutes cardio of your choice 248
Challenge: eat 3 veggies - I managed that o... Wed, 6 May 2009 21:12:21 EST Days 1 & 2 Sunday started the first day of Boot Camp. Here are the workouts and challenges:

Day 1: 248
Workout: Kickbox video
Challenge: Blog the start of this challenge with photos.
I also walked for 1/2 hour in the park with a friend.

Day 2: 248
Workout: Do the 8-Minute Lower Body Workout with Band Video
+ 30 minutes cardio of your choice.

My band broke and I refastened it to finish the workout, but I need a new band!... Mon, 4 May 2009 11:25:26 EST Boot Camp Challenge I'm going to Boot Camp! The great thing about this challenge is that I don't have to leave my family to do it ;-) It's called Sweat suit to Swimsuit Boot Camp! Starting Sunday, May 3rd I am joining with others on a journey to add healthy habits to our life. This challenge focuses on daily cardio and strength training. I've been adding in more cardio this year, but I have only dabbled in the strength training aspect. The challenge lasts 4 weeks and will probably be some of the busiest w... Sat, 2 May 2009 22:50:41 EST Getting pushed out the door This morning I woke up with lots of errands to do in my head. I got the clothes out of the dryer, made sure my kids had what they needed for school, and made lunches. The kids and I got breakfast ready and had stuff pretty much ready when my hubby came home from spinning class. I was, however, still in my jammies. He changed into some dry clothes and we ate breakfast. Afterwards my mind went again to the next tasks - new load of clothes started, dishes in the sink, and a needed trip to t... Mon, 27 Apr 2009 11:09:58 EST The Best Buddy I joined SP last year in May, but it wasn't until November that I started really utilizing the site and what it had to offer. Why? That is when my dear hubby joined. Then I became "remotivated" - maybe that isn't a real word, but it is a real concept. I can have good intentions, but having support is so very helpful in fueling those good intentions. I know that finding support can be done through many ways - a friend, relative, neighbor, or someone online with similar goals. Mine comes ... Thu, 23 Apr 2009 09:34:37 EST 3 pounds away from my goal I'm seeing the difference in my clothing. I have not weighed this amount since my 1st year of marriage when I was 20 years old. I am now 34, and am learning new things everyday.
I had a few weeks where the scale didn't seem to move, but things were changing. I am now 3 pound away from my goal of 118. I think I weighed 115 before I got married . . . will I see that again? I think so, in time. I'm still working on the exercise aspect of things. When I make the effort to "get out t... Sun, 12 Apr 2009 16:01:36 EST Stuck, but not stuck This past week presented a little trouble. I went over in calories 2 days, and on these same 2 days I was under on protein. Fitness was not at it's finest either in my week - I didn't make my goal. So, I should not be surprised that the scale didn't show lower numbers either.
I think in the past I would have tried to cover up the fact that I ate too much in general. I wouldn't have even been thinking about how much protein I ate. And, I would have dismissed the idea of exercise alto... Mon, 6 Apr 2009 10:46:40 EST
