KELLY122581's SparkPeople Blog KELLY122581's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community knee pain - new shoes help but don't solve the problem Well, my new shoes from my last blog post ended up being too small so I returned them for a larger size. They didn't have the larger size in stock, so I had to wait a while. I finally got them this weekend and was able to take them out for their first run this morning!

Maybe its weird, but I decided to start a personal journal today too, to write about my runs. It occurred to me that the shoes I just retired have seen me through a lot of miles, and I would like to be able to... Mon, 17 Jun 2013 07:04:59 EST Getting Real Big changes for me. A few weeks ago, I got a job in Germany that starts in August - which means I am not just starting a new job, but I'm also moving and changing countries!! (I'll be teaching physics at a high school in Thuringia).

The stress of change and of dealing with the logistical and practical arrangements, ON TOP of my normal stress of working(ish) on my PhD and doing my current job means that I have been SERIOUSLY SLACKING!!!!

My running is down to abou... Tue, 4 Jun 2013 16:15:18 EST 10k, new goal, new focus Well, I "ran" my first 10K last weekend! My partner organized it with her work, and it was a fundraiser for Duchenne's Syndrome (her boss' son has it). It was totally fun! It was a trail run, so there was a lot of terrain and up and down hills. I walked the "uphill" parts - and think I ran about 3/4ths of the race and walked the rest. We ran through a little village and a lot of farm land. We saw lots of cows and the first flowers of spring!

I came in dead last! haha. ... Sun, 5 May 2013 11:33:37 EST New Goal So I'm finding myself very close to my weight loss goal. I'm not sure where to go from here.

Back when I set that goal, I couldn't imagine being any thinner than that. But now that I have more or less hit it, I feel I could lose a few more pounds.

So I'm asking myself, "what should my goal be?"

Should I reset my goal from 149 to 145 pounds? (I'm 5'4", but I have a "large" skeletal frame)

Should I keep my goal at 149 and enter maintenance wit... Tue, 16 Apr 2013 10:10:29 EST Vacation! My parents were visiting us for the last 2 weeks, and we took trips to Barcelona and Normandy. Aside from a few pastries and a little too much wine, we all were very good about keeping to our diets!!

My dad and my partner rode bikes all over Barcelona, and all three of us went for an early morning run.

My mom recently got a fancy pedometer (this one

up-review/
) and it was her goal to reach 10000 steps a day. ... Tue, 16 Apr 2013 08:30:24 EST Milwaukee - suggestions of places to live Anyone from Milwaukee out there?

We're considering a move for work - my job would be on the East Side. From what I've read, I think we would most like to live in Riverwest. The internet says it is a lively area, and would be close enough for me to bike to work.

Anyone have any good tips about where to look for apartments or what areas are fun to live in? I'd like to have a lively community-oriented atmosphere: diversity and liberal minds are a necessity, parks and ... Sun, 24 Mar 2013 18:07:13 EST Approaching Maintenance Well - I'm 3.5 lbs above my maintenance goal!

I've been losing at a rate around 1.5-2 lbs a week for most of this journey. But for the past 4 weeks I've been slowing it down. I've been increasing my calories a little at a time, and now I'm losing about .3-.5 lbs a week. My goal is to find the "sweet spot" calorie range at right about the same time that I hit my goal weight.

I'm doing this on purpose because when I hit my maintenance range, I want to really maint... Mon, 11 Mar 2013 22:08:41 EST SJ2F5K - just roll with it, it will catch on! So, my running has been stuck in a rut, without a real goal or good instructions about how to improve (or vague instructions, or conflicting instructions)..... So my partner and I have been making excuses not to run, being lazy, and not keeping up with our normal schedule.

Then - a flash of brilliance!

We decided to take our C25K schedule and adapt it for our needs now. We can run now 5K without stopping, but rather slow (30 min for her, 38 min for me). We need ... Sun, 10 Mar 2013 17:49:48 EST IBS? I've been having abdominal pain a lot lately, which intensifies during exercise. I saw one doctor who diagnosed it as "benign abdominal wall muscle pain" and said I just have to wait it out until it heals. I saw a second doctor who said he could feel my intestines were inflamed and diagnosed me with spastic colon/IBS.

He gave me a smooth muscle muscle relaxant which really helped but also knocked me out! SO sleepy, I could barely function! I saw him again yesterday and he g... Sat, 16 Feb 2013 04:10:20 EST into the 60s!!! I weighed in at 69.9 kg today! I started in the 90s - so this is my 4th and last decade in my weight loss!

I've only ever been below 70 once in my life (5 years ago) when I hung between 69-70 for a couple weeks.

My goal weight is 67.5 (149 lbs) and that will be my lowest weight ever as an adult.

While I'm nearing my goal weight, my %fat is still relatively high: 36% (according to my impedance scale) - signaling that I need to up the ante with strengt... Fri, 15 Feb 2013 06:03:29 EST Dad is no longer in the diabetic range! My dad was diagnosed as pre-diabetic in 2011, and shrugged it off, as many people do... in 2012 his numbers tipped him into the diabetic range, and after he got over some depression regarding his diagnoses, he got serious about fixing it!

Together with my mom, he's been eating better (about 90% vegan), and exercising, and he's lost about 20 lbs so far! I still can't believe that my meat-and-potatos, McDonalds eating Father is now essentially eating a plant-based-diet, and ENJO... Tue, 12 Feb 2013 08:25:28 EST Valentine's Run!! - photos :-) On my way to the Valentine's Run starting line! My wings moved one at a time while I was running. One lady who passed me said it looked like I might take off. haha

After the run! Still alive, and managed to keep our wigs!

"I Love You" S... Sun, 10 Feb 2013 14:00:24 EST Well hello! So it seems like it has been a LOOONNG time since I last wrote a blog! So this blog is a hodge-podge of what has happened in the mean time.

My life has exploded over the last month with new (and fun) commitments! I got to substitute teach (biology, environmental science and general science) for a whole month, and it was fantastic fun. I'm a certified chemistry and physics teacher - so bio and environmental science was WAY outside of my comfort zone, so I had to do a lot of ... Sat, 9 Feb 2013 16:58:30 EST The goal is in sight! Well, on Friday I had a meeting with my two PhD advisors (yes, I have two - twice the opinions, twice the fun!). We agreed that I am in a place where I should start giving them chapters to review.

My first chapter - the introduction - is now due in 3 weeks. EEEEKKK! I should get on that. Two more chapters (either 3 and 4 or 6 and 7, my choice) are due at the end of March. This is getting real! The verdict will soon be in as to whether or not my research is sufficient... Sun, 13 Jan 2013 07:04:24 EST Maintenance In my last blog post, I discussed the sudden realization that I am terrified of the "maintenance phase" .... I've been thinking about that for the last few days and think that the reason I am so afraid of this is that I am REALLY a goal oriented person. I have a hard time in my house, for example, tidying everyday to maintain cleanliness. It is my personalty to prefer to let thing get to a catastrophic level of disorder and then spend a weekend reorganizing, cleaning, and making things bet... Mon, 7 Jan 2013 07:23:41 EST Getting Real Well, as I previously mentioned, I gained 2.5 lbs over the holidays in the time that I should have lost 2.5 lbs - leaving me a total of 5 lbs behind what I could have done. I estimated that at about 4 "weeks" lost even though it was a physical period of 2 weeks. So, I just re-entered my current and goal weights and recalculated the time to get there - I also changed my goal weight from 152 to 149 lbs (after getting real about my "frame size" - I've been convinced that I had a large frame fo... Thu, 3 Jan 2013 06:29:07 EST Resolutions - a four letter word? So I've been seeing a lot of blogs and SP motivational sayings that are against resolutions. My favorite anti-resolution SP saying is "don't make resolutions, make yourself!" While this seems on the surface to be motivational, I am not sure why resolutions are a bad thing. I posed something about resolutions in one of my SP teams and got a lot of resistance.

So my question is: Why are we so anti-resolution?

I don't get it. Aren't resolutions just goals? Aren't... Wed, 2 Jan 2013 07:41:13 EST Sugar headache Started eating healthy again yesterday. Last night and today I've been suffering from a detox headache after a 2 week long sugar binge. No wonder it is hard for people to recover from the bad decisions over the holidays!

I just keep reminding myself to consume lots of water, fruit and vegetables. The headache will go away soon, and I'll be back on track to my goals.

Why did my friend have to bring me 2 packages of Oreos from the USA??? I swear Oreos are my krypt... Tue, 1 Jan 2013 07:20:50 EST Holidays! 2.5 lbs is the cost of my Holidays.

I've gained 2.5 lbs over the last 2 weeks which is about a 2 week setback for me and a lost 2 weeks, so I am now a month behind where I wanted to be. That isn't TOO bad, though of course not the direction I want to go. I had fun with out of town guests and family, but now it is time to get back on track.

I'm not waiting until tomorrow for a resolution, because I don't believe you can change your life on New Years. So today, ... Mon, 31 Dec 2012 11:17:18 EST This weight loss thing isn't easy, but it isn't rocket science either... 1+1=2 ......... diet + exercise = weight loss

The math really does work, people! Why can't everyone do this? Just like people who think they stink at math, there are people who think they can't lose weight. I used to be one of those people. I really don't understand that anymore.

My success aside, I've also been witnessing my parents - both of whom are seriously overweight and battling difficult health problems - being very successful at losing weight! De... Fri, 7 Dec 2012 06:33:26 EST Last day of November - and goals. On the last day of October I noted that I weighed 168 lbs, and had lost 6.8 lbs in October.

urnal_individual.asp?blog_id=5118759

Today, on the last day of November I am very proud to announce that I weigh 162.9 lbs for a total of 5.1 lbs lost this month.

This, despite getting REALLY busy this month, as well as getting closer to my goal weight (meaning it naturally 'should' be getting harder to lose). ... Fri, 30 Nov 2012 04:59:58 EST Busy schedule - fitness Well my workload has just increased dramatically. I'm working on writing my PhD thesis, and my research contract was just reduced to 50% part time.... so, in order to supplement my salary and to gain some teaching experience, I've started tutoring some high school students in chemistry and physics, and I've also started substitute teaching.

My research and my tutoring jobs are 15 miles in opposite directions to my house, so I am also spending TONS of time in transit between acti... Sun, 18 Nov 2012 13:45:32 EST Hey! she looks like a runner! I really really really really (did I mention really?) didn't want to go running this morning. It was raining, and I had the worst PMS cramps of all time OF ALL TIME!

But I didn't run all week because I had a cold, and the weather was awful (I hate Belgian weather 10 months out of the year). So I had to go. I dragged myself out of bed (with the significant help of my partner). I bargained with myself and decided to only do a short 2 mile run because of the situation. Goo... Sat, 3 Nov 2012 18:00:18 EST Last day of October. On the last day of September in my blog, I noted that I weighed 174.8 lbs, and wondered where I would be on the last day of October.

urnal_individual.asp?blog_id=5080628

Today, on the last day of October, I weigh 168 lbs for a total of 6.8 lbs lost in October!

I hit a little plateau there for a bit, but somehow the moment I decided to not obsess over it, about 1.5 lbs melted off in a day or two, and... Wed, 31 Oct 2012 07:58:24 EST thyroid? So in the ongoing saga of my unexplained joint pain, my joint specialist tested my thyroid function. Seems there is some indication that I have mild (or early stage) primary hypothyroidism (under-active thyroid).

My thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH - from the pituitary gland) was slightly elevated (4.5 and it should be in the range of 0.3-3.0 apparently), and my thyroid hormones themselves are just a hare on the OK side of low (0.98 and the range is 0.93-1.7).

I h... Sat, 27 Oct 2012 10:44:06 EST still enjoying the view! I don't fixate on my BMI, since I don't think it is super important anyway - but I just recalculated it for the first time in a while, and it has gone down 5.4 points!

I started at 33.6, and I am now 28.2! What???

I also cheated and measured my waist (mid-month), and I'm down just a hare below the 31.5 inch "healthy" waist measurement cutoff!!! yay! I'm aiming for at least 30, so I can fit in my old clothes - so not to far away! I've lost at least 8 inches f... Fri, 26 Oct 2012 15:59:22 EST plateau! Well, it seems it may have happened? I might be in my first plateau of this weight loss journey. It was bound to happen sooner or later. I last reported on my mysterious weight gain that I'm attributing to my increased yoga strength training... since then, about half of that weight has come off, but I'm still hovering around 171.ish lbs. I was down to 170 two weeks ago.

I'm doing things mostly right, though I think I could be eating more veggies and less grains, but I'm s... Thu, 25 Oct 2012 05:49:15 EST surprise weight gain So I went to the advanced yoga class last week thursday, and again yesterday. It is safe to say that my arms and shoulders and core muscles are all more than a little sore (my legs are fine since they are used to being worked hard by running).
405

I haven't changed my eating habits, and I'm in a "loss" week according to my hormonal cycle (I've blogged about it before, but I only lose every other week, but I see big losses those weeks).

So you can ... Sun, 21 Oct 2012 05:08:37 EST xoxo My partner dragged me out of the house kicking and screaming (ok, not literally, but almost) to go running this evening. We scheduled it, we have to do it.... that is our rule. No excuses once it's in the calendar.

Well, were back now. We did 4.1 km, even though we are both exhausted, and I feel great! More than that, I feel truly blessed that I have someone here who knows exactly when I need to be pushed (and when I kneed to be left alone).

I'm proud of how I'm... Fri, 19 Oct 2012 16:17:04 EST Sucess and Oreos (no thanks to) Wow.... I feel like a steam train! Nothing can stop me this month! So far in October, I've lost nearly 5 lbs (4.7 lbs so far) and 1 inch from my waist! And I still have almost half of October still to go!

I looked at myself in the mirror today, and for the first time I think I'm starting to look like how I feel. I've always had good self esteem (thanks, mom!) and I think that leads to me having kind of the opposite distorted body image than your normally hear about. I... Thu, 18 Oct 2012 06:03:56 EST mid-month update and re-focus So, a mid month update: As of the middle of October, I've lost an astonishing 4 lbs this month! I'm now 170.8 lbs. I am sooooo excited to almost be in the 160s!!!

My goal for the rest of the month is to lose at least 2 lbs.

I'm also fitting into more of my old jeans! I also got rid of some dress pants that are too big! I can't bring myself to get rid of jeans that are too big until they fall off.... because big jeans are so comfy for lazing around in..... bu... Tue, 16 Oct 2012 08:14:31 EST 4 miles! This morning was the NICEST day to go outside! It was clear and sunny with nice crisp air - 55°F.

So, we jogged a total of 4 miles today! 3.5 miles then a couple minutes break when we passed my house for some water, then another 0.5 miles! My speed was sloooooow... i averaged 12.5 min/mile - i got pretty slow after the first 2.5 mi. But whatever. I'm still amazed that I can jog more than 3 minutes at a time! lol.

After running, we walked about 2 miles to the... Sun, 14 Oct 2012 09:39:22 EST just keep movin' along! Since I posted my shoe post yesterday, I've lost 0.5kg! (I think I've been holding onto extra water from a few days of eating salty food - homemade pumpkin soup, etc).

So, that means I'm only 1kg (2 lbs) away from wearing my new shoes! I think I will plan a night on the town next weekend to wear them. That's motivating, right?

In other news, I just registered to run in a race with the local drug rehab center. Their patients have a running club and some of them tak... Sat, 13 Oct 2012 05:34:39 EST shoes!!! So, at the beginning of my weight loss planning, I made some goals and a rewards schedule. My 15kg-lost reward was to buy some new shoes. I'm 1.5 kg away from that now, but a Belgian magazine ran a coupon promotion for 50 EURO heels for 17 EUROS. They come in awesome colors, so I bought 3 copies of the magazine, and 3 pairs of shoes :-) Black, Aubergine, and Orange.

I wanted Red and Turquoise too, but I stopped myself just short of ridiculous!!!! hahaha.

Anyway, I... Fri, 12 Oct 2012 17:16:03 EST "Ladies Run" 4K race My partner and I ran in the 4K race that was attached to the Brussels marathon on Sunday. The hilariously named (and slightly offensive?) "ladies run" was lots of fun! It was great having a nice relaxed race with a bunch of women. There were a few serious competitors, but most of the folks out were women having a good time getting in shape. I finished the 4K course in 28 minutes, and it was the first race that I finished without walking! I'm pretty proud of that after a multi-week hi... Tue, 9 Oct 2012 16:06:37 EST goals and milestones As I sit here now, I've lost 30 lbs!!!! Woohoo! I now weigh 172 lbs. I have 20 lbs to go to my goal weight. 152 lbs for a 5'5" girl might seem too much, in fact it is still officially an "overweight" BMI, but I have a gigantic bone structure. My ribs and hip bones wouldn't ever let me in any clothes less than a size 6 (and really that is pushing it.... an 8 is probably my healthy lower limit). I have such big bones.... if I lived in a turn of the century prairie, I would probably be c... Thu, 4 Oct 2012 03:16:17 EST A rogue month - update Well, sorry to have fallen off the face of the earth (sparkpeople) for the last several weeks! I've had some major stuff at work to do, some major stuff at home (our house was taken over by a family of mice, and our car didn't pass inspection at the last minute so we were spending all of our waking hours trying to find a "new" car on the cheap while slowly ridding our house of rodents and taking the bus), as well as some major health problems (both physical and psychological)..... needless ... Sun, 30 Sep 2012 13:36:13 EST Race results! So yesterday was the race I was hoping my knee/back would let me run in. I did it! I had a small amount of ignorable knee pain just at the beginning, and a stiff knee when it was over, but nothing serious to write home about.

The race was fun and we got a free shirt (technical sweat wicking fabric, too!), and a free beer at the end. Yay Belgium!

The only problem was that the race was at 2PM on a HOOOOTTTTTTT day, and there were NO water stations set up anywhere!... Mon, 10 Sep 2012 04:28:26 EST Measures of success.... and beer. So, I have one of those bio-impedance scales that measures your % body fat, etc... One thing that it measures is "visceral fat" or the fat around your organs. It gives the result in a scale, with 1-9 being normal or healthy, 10-13 being at increased risk and 13+ being high risk. I bought the scale after 1 month of getting healthy again, and my visceral fat rating was an 8 (probably due to the fact that I carry my weight in my ankles, butt, and upper arms! lol). I was pleased with t... Sun, 9 Sep 2012 03:27:04 EST The internet is an opposite machine. So it seems like the second I put something out into the internet-o-sphere, the opposite occurs. The internet is a trickster! Ok, not always, but for my joints this seems true. And since correlation always implies causation, let's build a religion around it! lol.
17

My joint pain came back a few weeks ago, after being gone for 2 years, the DAY after I got all braggy (and likely annoying) with another SPer over my joint pain relief from learning that I had a ... Fri, 7 Sep 2012 08:43:47 EST The good, the bad, and the depressing Good news:
I've gotten back on track with tracking my food. I've been shooting for a solid mid-calorie range intake everyday, tracking everything, and the scale has been MOVING! I've lost more than a pound since Friday... I don't think I was overeating before, to the contrary, I think my "winging it" approach to nutritional management had me under-eating, and this little boost in calories is also giving me a metabolism boost.

Bad news:
My hair has started falling ou... Mon, 3 Sep 2012 08:52:25 EST No longer OBESE! My goal for August was to break through the "obese" BMI range.

Today, on the last day of August, I weighed in at 81.5 kg.... or 179.7 lbs. For my height (5'5"), I needed to get under 180 lbs to enter the "overweight" category.

So.... I did it!!!!

- I am no longer obese
- I'm into the 170s
- I've lost exactly 10 kg (22 lbs) since I started this journey at 91.5 kg (202 lbs) 3 months ago!

At the beginning of this journey I set up ... Fri, 31 Aug 2012 06:41:56 EST The snowball effect ..... and if snowballs were made of high fructose corn syrup or hydrogenated fat, I'd want to eat them too.

I drank a coke on Tuesday. I drank it because I was feeling a little sick to my stomach after trying to get some work done on a public bus and then the bus driver started smoking (really??). The combination of motion sickness and second hand smoke put me over the edge, so when I got off the bus I bought a can of coke. It immediately settled my stomach (the Belgians lau... Thu, 30 Aug 2012 06:44:26 EST Came in last in big race - still feel like I won! 208 364 208 364 208 364

Despite my body putting up a huge fight against me getting to the starting line, I did it! And surprisingly enough, I didn't have any pain throughout the entire race (except in my lungs. lol).

My back was just fine... I practiced my Chi running techniques... soft landings, upright posture, and to thank me, my back didn't hurt at all.

I didn't do it alone, though... Gu... Mon, 27 Aug 2012 03:24:09 EST Have a great weekend everyone! Off to my 5K Well, I wanted to be less than 180 lbs on today's weigh-in. 179.9 and below puts me into the "overweight" range and out of "obese".... now, I know these ranges (and BMI in general) are an overgeneralized measure of health..... and not nearly very accurate, but I still hate that word obese.... and so this was my goal. Not to be obese for my first 5K.

(As an aside, KELLYSWIM12 and I are starting a campaign to change the word "obese" to "fluffy" - we agree it is a kinder word. ... Sat, 25 Aug 2012 03:24:31 EST Missing: My Butt NO REWARD FOR RETURN!!! haha

So, I work at the University as a researcher, and one of the (many) perks is that I don't have a dress code. I work in jeans and a t-shirt most days. So, my jeans have been feeling looser, but I haven't actually gotten too small for them yet. They actually fit comfortably, like somewhat relaxed fit, but they don't look to big or fall off my hips despite having lost almost 20 lbs.

But yesterday I was feeling fancy and put on a p... Wed, 22 Aug 2012 05:25:49 EST overcoming dehydration and race day coming up! Well, the doctor told me yesterday that my super low blood pressure is likely caused by dehydration (heat exhaustion) from Belgium's recent heat wave, added to the BP lowering action of the beta blocker I am on (for an irregular heart rhythm). So... he put me on a no-nonsense electrolyte drink (think Gatorade but grosser)... and instructed me to try to not use the beta blocker, or only use half if necessary. My BP this morning was 88/52 (better than yesterday's 80/40) so it is coming up... Mon, 20 Aug 2012 10:44:59 EST Morning update Well my BP this morning was still super low, 80/40, so I made an appointment to see the doctor during lunch. I'll have that looked at ASAP.... because I certainly didn't feel well last night! I am feeling a little better today, though.

In good news, my joint pain has significantly decreased this morning! I don't think it was the wheat, btw. I was almost 3 days gluten-free (with no change in joint pain), and then yesterday evening we had dinner at a restaurant. My salad was pr... Mon, 20 Aug 2012 04:35:46 EST yikes Woke up about 90 minutes ago with the start of a migraine. Got it in time with meds, and my head feels better. Then started having pain in my veins(arteries?) in my arm and decided I needed to check my blood pressure. 80/40 - yikes. I have naturally low blood pressure... 95/55 is pretty normal for me, but this is a new low.

I didn't eat much today because of the extreme heat we've had in Belgium, and I was sweating a lot and drinking lots of water.... so I think I'm just ...
