So maybe that's the culprit?

Today is Thanksgiving, so Happy Thanksgiving to any Sparkers that happen across this blog! 426 427 428 429</em... Thu, 27 Nov 2014 10:10:45 EST Day 25 snacking and scale fluctuations http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5823244 Last night was a snack night, not much to say there. The scale has been crazy lately, I think it's my GI tract still trying to sort itself out, but it was way up yesterday morning (like 3 pounds higher!) and down about 2 of those pounds this morning, despite the no snacking on Monday, and the snacking yesterday....go figure!

So today I am grateful for being fit and healthy, well, healthy for the most part, GI issues notwithstanding. I know fitness is a gradual thing, and takes co... Wed, 26 Nov 2014 09:09:00 EST Day 24 more gratitude http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5822706 yesterday was a no nosh night, so I think I'm now at 13/15. 2 more and I hit my goal for the month! 224 521

Woke up too early this morning, and could not get back to sleep, so I just got up. These pre-5am starts are not making me happy or feeling rested, but I also don't want to just lie around when I could be up starting my day, if I'm not sleeping anyway.

I have my training today, I switched days this week, (and it's my last session that I... Tue, 25 Nov 2014 09:34:24 EST day 23 keep plugging away http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5822110 Yesterday was a snack night-day, so nothing to report there, really. Oddly, I kind of skipped lunch, we had a late breakfast (brunch?) and so I wasn't hungry at lunchtime, and I went for a long walk/hike instead (a couple of hours) and when I got home I had some fruit and nuts instead of lunch.

My brain decided to stop working this morning when I was re-heating my coffee....for some reason, I put it in for 5 minute rather than the 15 seconds I usually go for....not sure what I w... Mon, 24 Nov 2014 08:27:52 EST Day 22 What are you thankful for? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5821551 I'm now as 12/15 for the month, no noshing nights....only 3 left to make my goal a reality! Totally doable, so I must give myself a high-five for that. 458

Yesterday was my last day on the low-FODMAP experiment. I would not call it a success in terms of fixing my problem, but I suppose I ruled that out as the issue. At least I can go back to eating onions and garlic, and many other foods that I love (avocado, mushrooms, pistachios) that were on the "do not eat" list.... Sun, 23 Nov 2014 09:53:38 EST Day 21 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5821044 Last night was a snack night, not much to say about that, except I probably did go a little overboard on the cheese and crackers! It's that "just one more" phenomenon that can get me sometimes....I know it's better to portion it out rather than eat out of the bag, but convenience and a but of laziness win out sometimes, and that's what happens! It's a lesson I have to keep relearning.

Moving on! Today is the last day of the low-FODMAP plan, so I'm looking forward to just eating ... Sat, 22 Nov 2014 10:05:20 EST Day 20 Happy Friday! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5820550 I'm now at 11/15 days this month of no night noshing....still working the plan of every other night. Last night I actually was not hungry even before dinner, not my usual MO. I'm not sure why that was, but I did enjoy a giant banana for a snack in the afternoon, maybe that was so filling I wasn't hungry hours later? I guess I'll see how it goes today, I have another one at work for today's afternoon snack.

The probiotics really seem to be doing the trick, I'm finally feeling "... Fri, 21 Nov 2014 08:33:45 EST Day 19 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5820007 Last night was a snack night, not much to say about that. I did enjoy it though!

And we watched a movie about the Eagles, lots of good music and interviews with many artist of the 70's, if you like that music you will enjoy this movie, available on Netflix.

Today is my training day with Iain, should be fun! I think I have 2 sessions left of the package I bought, and then I'll switch over to the other gym, which I'm really looking forward to. I also ran into one of my ... Thu, 20 Nov 2014 10:03:08 EST day 18- 10 down, 5 to go! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5819392 Well, it looks like I'm 2/3's to my goal of 15 "no noshing" nights this month! I'm feeling good about my goal and the progress I've made on it, it feels very doable and sustainable. I didn't even flinch when Larry brought out the back of chips and salsa...I LOVE chips....but I didn't even feel tempted to partake. It's a good feeling! 224

On the GI front, I've been feeling more normal the past few days....I have a feeling the probiotic is kicking in and doing it's job... Wed, 19 Nov 2014 08:59:37 EST Day 16 and 17 (whoops, forgot to blog!) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5818828 I just realized I forgot to blog yesterday....well I walked to work so was just trying to get out early, and then when I got home my yoga and meditation were my priority.

So day 16 was a no snack night, I did it, and felt good about it. It was Sunday, and I pretty much stayed home, did a workout in the basement, so I'm on track for 3 workouts this week, I'll hit the gym after work today, and meet Iain on Thursday for my training.

Yesterday was a snack night, I really ... Tue, 18 Nov 2014 09:31:24 EST Day 15 still in it http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5817685 Yesterday was a snack night, and I feel pretty good about it. I did not go overboard at all, in fact, after I had finished, I thought I might want more, but decided I wasn't hungry, and just sipped my tea. So, I feel good about the limited snacking I did. I also skipped/missed my mid-morning snack, as I had a hair appointment after which I went to Trader Joes. I picked up 2 basil plants and another pot with 3 herbs, rosemary, sage and thyme. And they smell wonderful, and look great on th... Sun, 16 Nov 2014 10:26:16 EST day 14 a qualified win http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5817146 Skipped the night snack last night, and also the afternoon snack as well. So I am still on track to hit my goal of 15 days this month of not snacking at night. I think I'm at 8 of 14 days this month. Not bad...

Yesterday was an odd day, I walked in to work, which was fine, I only worked 4 hours, one hour of which was working a payroll audit. They had snack/goodies for the auditors. Sat, 15 Nov 2014 09:15:48 EST Day 13 learning from failure http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5816628 Well, my evening did not go as planned yesterday, I was thinking I'd give the "no snacking" a 2 day in a row try, but then I found myself alone (Larry went out to a function) and after a lightish dinner, I was still wanting more....so more I had! After demolishing the almost empty bags of popcorn, I dipped into the chocolate covered almonds. Put them away, but still wanted more....so I went back for more! I suppose one good thing about this low-FODMAP plan I'm on is there is not a lot of s... Fri, 14 Nov 2014 09:06:58 EST day 12 status quo http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5816024 Yep, I've got the pattern down...one day on, one day off of the snacking after dinner. Last night was a no snack night, and I achieved the goal. I think I need to push it a little more though, so I may go for no snacking tonight as well, I'll see how I feel after dinner, I should be satisfied and able to avoid the kitchen, we'll see.

I can hear ti raining now! Glad I'm not walking in to work today! It's my training day, hope I'm up for it. Last week was brutal....and I felt a ... Thu, 13 Nov 2014 08:41:27 EST Day 11 back to the snack http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5815409 Yep, last night was a snack night, had some popcorn, a little chocolate, and some plantain chips....but didn't feel over-full or stuffed, just satisfied.

I'm walking to work today, so I'd better get moving! 311 Wed, 12 Nov 2014 09:16:29 EST Day 10-sticking with it! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5814782 November 10th, now I'm at 6/10 days of not snacking after dinner, I've fallen into a comfortable pattern of every other day not snacking. This is working out well for me, as it's not all or nothing, and I know if I don't snack tonight, I can tomorrow if I want. So I'm not feeling deprived or like "I'll just do it tonight and start in earnest tomorrow" since there is always a tomorrow, and many times putting off starting means it never happens! There is a whole chapter in the Willpower book... Tue, 11 Nov 2014 09:58:44 EST Day 9 fingers crossed! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5814095 As far as my "no noshing" goal goes, I'm in a pattern of one day on, one day off, and I feel like that is going pretty well. So yesterday was my day off, I had some snacks after dinner, felt satisfied and feel like I didn't go overboard, so that makes me feel good! I'm 5/9 days this month skipping the snacks!

On the tummy front, I got the "Align" yesterday, the probiotic the NP had recommended last time I saw her, and took on yesterday morning. And guess what? No symptoms since... Mon, 10 Nov 2014 09:24:55 EST day 8 carrying on (and a book reccomendation) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5813512 Another win yesterday, I finished dinner, had my dessert (the PB2 chocolate mug cake) and enjoyed the rest of the evening snack free. And I didn't feel like I was missing anything, knowing that I can snack tonight if I like. I've been trying to stick to every other day for this challenge, and I think that is working out really well. I don't feel deprived, I know if I snacked last night I won't tonight, and vice versa. I have a feeling if I was trying to go all or nothing, I would more th... Sun, 9 Nov 2014 09:59:41 EST day 7 hit the snacks http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5812993 It was Friday night, and I had decided it was a snack night, and even thought I wasn't really hungry after dinner, I dug in! Popcorn, a couple of chocolates, and later cheese and crackers....

And I still went to bed before 9. I'm not beating myself up about it, it was what I wanted, and had essentially planned, so I can't fault myself for that. And overall, the goal is going well, I'm over 50% of the days in November skipping the snacks at night.

I did have some stra... Sat, 8 Nov 2014 09:04:24 EST Day 6-skipped the snacks http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5812449 Well, I did get another win under my belt last night, finished dinner, and stayed out of the kitchen after that (well, not entirely, I did go get a glass of herbal tea and water). And I wasn't hungry either, so that helped!

The brownies were a hit, although the mint patties did make strange melted spots in them, that turned hard, so were difficult to get out of the pan. I may need to actually read the instructions on the site that posted the idea (assuming I can find that!) to se... Fri, 7 Nov 2014 09:04:55 EST Day 5-limited snacking http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5811836 I decided to let my level of hunger after dinner determine if I would snack or not, and after dinner, I decided to enjoy a bowl of popcorn, and after that some leftover truffles from the Halloween candy that we did not give away. I'm still on track to hit 15 days of not snacking at night, as I have 3 out of 5 days snack free, better than 50%!

Today is my training day with Iain, last week he kicked my butt, and I was sore for a couple of days afterward, so we'll see how today goe... Thu, 6 Nov 2014 08:26:13 EST day 4-skipped the snacks http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5811175 Another success under my belt last night, I was able to finish dinner, and skip the snacks. It's not as hard as I thought it would be, since I really do have an ingrained habit of noshing at night in front of the TV. I guess I just had to make up my mind not to do it. Not saying it's easy, but it is pretty simple, just stay put, sip some flavored water (I add herbal iced tea to my water) and enjoy whatever program we are watching.

And since I started this my scale has been more ... Wed, 5 Nov 2014 08:20:15 EST day 3, Progress not perfection http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5810548 I decided with 2 nights of not snacking under my belt, that I would allow last night to be a snack night, after all, the goal is 15 days this month, so I don't need to be "perfect" and never snack at night. And my scale has been heading back down the past couple of days, so I made the decision to enjoy some popcorn after dinner. That lead to also enjoying some gluten-free cookies, and a small candy bar leftover from Halloween! 198

Now, I know this is what happens wh... Tue, 4 Nov 2014 08:57:58 EST 2 for 2 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5809806 Starting my goal strong, 2 for 2 for November, I resisted the urge to go back to the kitchen after dinner and munch! I was feeling a little hungry right before bed (I don't think it could have been real hunger, as we had a large dinner, and I had a chocolate mug cake for dessert) but I resisted the urge, and instead went a brushed my teeth and hit the sack!

216 102

For breakfast I made an egg scramble on corn tortillas with pepper jack cheese me... Mon, 3 Nov 2014 08:25:11 EST Day 1 success http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5809153 I can report that for my "No Noshing in November" goal of going 15 days out of 30 without night snacking has started out well, 1/15. Last night I ate my dinner (spaghetti squash with low-FODMAP marinara I had made earlier that day), then brewed up a cup of mint tea, watched some Netflix, (Bones, if you're interested) and went to bed! I can't say that I wasn't WANTING to snack some, those habits are hard to shake, but I just sipped my tea (and my water when that was finished) and stuck to my... Sun, 2 Nov 2014 08:01:49 EST No Night Noshing November! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5808640 So my scale has been unkind lately, as I'm dealing with some digestive issues, trying the low-FODMAP eating plan, and, I have to admit, snacking too much at night! So I starting thinking, what can I do to combat this habit? Make a goal! I'm sure you've heard of SMART goals, so here is mine:

S: specific. for the month of November I will not eat after dinner 50% of the days. So 15 days out of 30 is my goal to not nosh at night

M: measurable: I'll add a goal to my goa... Now that I'm here (125) I'd like to get to where I'm comfortable not tracking again. I maintained around 135 for years without much tracking of food, so I know how that feels, I'm just not certain about this lower weight. Sat, 2 Mar 2013 10:06:51 EST I just realized.... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5234694 So I was posting on another blog where the blogger asked for suggestions to curb nighttime snacking, and I observed that I was not feeling the urge to snack as much while watching TV at night. I think I may have hit on something here, so tell me if any of you have observed a similar phenomenon. We (Larry and I) watch almost no "live" TV, and pretty much watch shows on Netflix, either streaming or DVD. Well, you know what, they don't have commercials with all kinds of tempting food triggers... Sat, 2 Feb 2013 16:36:32 EST Making lunches for work http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5161110 So today I made a quiche and mini meatloaves and realized that for a couple of months now, I've been doing really well at making my lunches for work, rather than buying frozen ones at the store.

So what does that mean? I'm just guessing here on some of this, since I haven't really done a true comparison but:

1) less expensive. I can spend as little as $1.50 for a sale entree, and up to $5.00 for a frozen entree at the store. If I don't bring my lunch and instead buy... Sun, 9 Dec 2012 13:21:56 EST Trail run! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5042527 So a while back I had a series of blogs about my foot problem trying to see if I could figure out what was aggravating or what was helping the issue. Sat, 1 Sep 2012 21:12:30 EST a fun workout http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5021067 So I got "the Women's Health Big Book of Exercises" on my Kindle a while back, and finally got around to really looking through the tome....let me tell you, it must have all the exercises in there! And with lots of variations as well....so I decided it was time to do what I keep thinking I SHOULD do every weekend, and get in a resistance training routine. I decided to start basic, and follow the first plan (just the workout, they also have diet suggestions, but I'm OK with my current diet) ... Sat, 18 Aug 2012 20:41:09 EST Keeping my eyes open http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5010692 Because there is always something to see...

Yesterday, on my walk home from work, I was feeling hot and tired (because we've been having a heat wave for Reno's "Hot August Nights") and just as I was turning off the main trail to head up the hill to my house, an owl flew right past my head! I got a really good look at him (or her?) since he was just a few feet from me as he flew over, and I turned and watched him fly up the trail into the canyon along the creek. It was a wonderful... Sat, 11 Aug 2012 09:31:44 EST Sunday blogging... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4991819 And it feels good to be back home again....

Had a great trip, my foot felt mostly fine, I did notice the pressure of driving the first day....switched shoes when we stopped and it was OK after that. Pretty much most of the trip I felt OK, occasional twinge here and there, but other than that, OK. I did use the Omega 5 cream in the morning, except one day. The driving on Friday started to bother it a bit, but then I put on the cruise control, and that helped since I wasn't pressi... Sun, 29 Jul 2012 15:02:07 EST Monday meanderings... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4984703 Did the Omega cream and icing of the foot morning and evening....it felt a little "odd" in the morning, but was fine the rest of the day. I mostly wore my slippers and briefly wore my flip flops. I may take the slippers camping....they are my older back-up pair, so if they get dirty, so be it!

We packed up the gear yesterday, so we're probably about half-way ready to leave, I'm hoping we'll get out before 10am, but if it's before noon I'll be happy. We looked over the campground... Tue, 24 Jul 2012 11:00:16 EST Sunday musings... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4983247 Yeah, I know it's Monday...but this is so I can keep track of where I am (or was) on Sunday....

Foot: did the cream and ice morning and evening. My foot didn't seem to give me much trouble today, even with washing the car, and doing some preliminary trip prep (mostly bringing stuff up from the gear closet). I did wear my flip flops for a few minutes, felt a bit of a twinge, then switched to different shoes and it felt better. I also noticed in my yoga this morning that my calv... Mon, 23 Jul 2012 12:58:09 EST Saturday and various and sundry things.... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4981492 Quick foot update: Omega cream in the morning with some ice. Puttered around the yard for the morning, got in a gentle yoga (mostly on my back) followed by meditation, and went shopping after lunch. I even went to a shoe store, and after trying on a number of ugly shoes that seemed like they might be suitable for work, I realized I really need wide shoes. I may try Zappos....and maybe a shoe stretcher for my current work shoes. I was wearing my Soloman's with the old orthotics, and my fo... Sun, 22 Jul 2012 09:40:55 EST Friday: start the blog http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4979028 Just to start for today, I did my yoga, and there were a couple of moves in this one that involved a twisting of the foot (it was a sequence that revolved around the mat) and ouch! I modified after the first one, and picked my foot up and planted it, rather than twisting. I have noticed this really aggravates the nerve. This happened a couple of weeks ago when we hiked up Mt Rose too, another reason I don't want to try any long hikes this next week. The rest of the session went OK, alth... Fri, 20 Jul 2012 10:24:37 EST Thursday foot blog http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4979019 And this one is delayed too....

And first I will say how much I appreciate all the comments and feedback on this series, foot problems seem to be around in abundance these days!

So, on to yesterday (Thursday):

no cream, I had an early dentist appointment and didn't have time. Also, no yoga, no meditation....and I drove to work. I wore the comfy Naturalizers with the chushy soles and my orthotics, and did have to move around a bit at work (my boss's offic...
