So on Monday I called the medical group and made an appointment with a new doctor. 224 It's not until the end of September, but for a new doctor appointment, I'm good with that. I don't have anything pressing, but I do want to schedule some screening stuff, so September it is!

As far as ... Not a bucket list, just a list of potential goals that I could work through. That got me to thinking about all the things I've already accomplished, and I thought that might be a good place to start. Give myself credit where credit is ... Thu, 6 Aug 2015 10:13:15 EST What to do? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5972488 I do a lot of thinking...and that is helpful, but doesn't really get to the doing all the time.

I don't know if it's because I don't get around to picking a goal, then working on it, or if it's because none of the things I think about really gel, but I do want to continue to make progress.

I listen to many health and fitness podcasts (as well as a lot of science and skeptical podcasts) and many of those have great information about goal setting and how to create a be... Wed, 5 Aug 2015 10:06:33 EST ***link***plan to stop tracking food http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5944517 From Armi Legg at Evidence mag this is a 9 step process to ease into not tracking food anymore. Since I've been tracking for a couple of months (off and on, mostly on) I think I may try this once I get to my mid-weight in my range, I'm still a few pounds away from that, but this looks like a sensible way to ease off the tracking.

evidencemag.com/stay-lean-without-tr
acking
Sat, 13 Jun 2015 14:59:13 EST Has it been a month already? Mindfulness wrap-up http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5884220 Wow, February went by quickly! I guess that's the norm for such a short month....

I think my mindful eating has gone pretty well. I do find myself distracted at times, but have been noticing that more, and making an effort at those times to slow down, and I think it's definitely helped! I find myself less likely to snack mindlessly, and have been gauging my hunger before I eat, asking myself if I'm really hungry, or just wanting to eat out of boredom, or habit...and if I'm not h... Sat, 28 Feb 2015 11:35:48 EST reflections on week 2 mindfulness http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5878004 Well, it's really week 2.5, but who's counting? 334

I do have to remind myself at times when I'm eating to slow down, chew thoroughly, enjoy the flavors and textures, put my fork (or spoon) down between bites. But I also feel I'm appreciating my meals more, enjoying the good food I prepare, or that is prepared for me (Larry does the evening meal most nights) as well as the occasional indulgence! It's so easy to get distracted, and I find it's nice to make an effort to... Wed, 18 Feb 2015 09:54:16 EST one week of mindful eating http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5871443 I was pondering as I walked home from work the other day how focusing on being mindful while eating was moving into other parts of my life. I have been focusing more on the present moment not only while eating, but also while walking, working out at the gym, doing the dishes, even watching TV! And it's a wonderful thing.

So for the mindful eating, I notice it's taking me longer to finish a meal. I'm making an effort to really chew my food thoroughly, to enjoy the taste and tex... Sat, 7 Feb 2015 20:18:24 EST February goal(s) and reviewing January http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5867164 Just looked back at my January goal blog to see how I did. My January goal was to pick up my knitting again, and I set my goal at knitting at least 3 days a week. I nailed it! I put it on my tracker, and made more than 3 days every week in January. I actually doubled it, and knitted 6/7 days each week. And even though I had to take apart my latest scarf to start over, I'm very pleased that I've kept up with the project.

I also had some team goals that I tracked.

... Sun, 1 Feb 2015 13:14:40 EST keeping it simple http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5857023 It's been more than a week since I've blogged, and a busy week it's been!

I did get some knitting done 6/7 days, so that's one for the "win" column, since my goal is 3 days a week. 248

I've also been getting in plenty of steps! I added them up yesterday and was already over 70.000 for the week, and that was with just the first 6 days! 248 548 All the walking to and from work does help! I also managed to stick to my resistance trai... Sun, 18 Jan 2015 10:41:48 EST Down time http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5850964 Yesterday was a low key, hang-out-at-home-and-do-nothing kind of day...I think we all need those every now and again. I'm not sure if it was a bit of a hangover from the yoga/facial (she did a fairly deep massage, especially my shoulder/neck area during the facial) or residual virus in it's death throes, but I wasn't feeling 100%, so just kind of took it easy. I did get out for a walk, not too long, only about 3.5 miles. The creek is iced over! I hand't noticed that on my other walks, so ... Sat, 10 Jan 2015 10:36:21 EST change of focus http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5850244 So I've read about a study where if an event ends in a painful way the event is thought of as painful, whereas if it ends in a neutral or painless way, it's not thought of that way, even if there was more pain before the end. (I believe they were studying people undergoing a medical procedure, but I also think this concept may fan out to other areas of life).

So I had a lot going on yesterday, it was pampering day for my staycation. First I went to the aerial yoga class. It was ... Fri, 9 Jan 2015 10:40:44 EST a dose of reality http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5849425 Sometimes reality strikes, and you just have to take a good look at it. I've decided to start a manual food log, just to see if I really am making healthy choices for the most part. And I think I am, but I do find that when I feel like I have to write it down I make different choices. I don't dip my hand in the bag of nuts or crackers or cookies, or whatever other snack foods I have lying around.

I'm also trying to up my daily step count, as I have not been hitting my weekly ... Thu, 8 Jan 2015 11:12:48 EST midweek update http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5848764 It's day 2 of my "staycation", and I thought it would be a good idea to check up on my progress against my previous blog.

We went skiing yesterday, which was on my mental list of things to do, even if it didn't make it into the blog! That helped me get over my 10K step goal yesterday too, 224

Today I was going to try to get to the aerial yoga class, and I called the place to see if I could also book a facial. When she called me back, she didn't have any ... Wed, 7 Jan 2015 16:14:03 EST The week ahead http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5846420 It's Monday again, and officially I'm off work this week....but I have some work that needs doing, so I am going in today to get that done. Also, I wanted to get in my Monday training, and figured it would be more likely to happen if I went to work, since it would fit right into my day!

So I'll have most of the week off work, and with that time, I want to make sure I use it to full advantage, meaning, do some things I'd like to get done around the house, try some things I've bee... Mon, 5 Jan 2015 08:46:02 EST Sunday blogging http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5845727 Last night I got out the knitting needles again, and decided on yet another scarf! I have this chunky brown yarn that I think will make a great scarf, and since I'm trying to use up the yarn I've already bought, I can't really make anything but scarves, since I don't have enough yarn for much else! And it's good practice for the stitches anyway, so I'm OK with making scarves for now.

I was quite ambitious this morning and have 2 recipes going right now! The Brown Sugar and Win... Sun, 4 Jan 2015 14:49:22 EST New goal for January (not a resolution) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5844571 I'm not making resolutions anymore, I didn't last year, and I'm not this year. I really can't remember the last time I made a "resolution", since what I do now is continually make new goals. I find it's easier to start a new habit one at a time, and I can even go back and re-start a habit I had going, but then dropped off.

Some of the habits that are now ingrained are typical ones, flossing and brushing daily, drinking my water and herbal tea, working out regularly, yoga, medit... Thu, 1 Jan 2015 11:30:52 EST day 31 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5842590 Last night was a no snack night....no problem there, Larry made the delicious potatoes, and we had steak and salmon along with a giant salad. Needless to say I was stuffed after all that!

And it was New Year's Eve! But we just stayed in, watched a little TV, and I think I was so tired I started falling asleep around 8, so I headed off to bed even earlier than usual! And I was doing so well this month with this blogging. Moving on!

The 29th was a no snack night, and I managed to not snack after dinner, and the 30th was a snack night and I did snack after dinner, and before dinner, actually yesterday I hit the cookies pretty herd! These are cookies from our German neighbor, who makes these wonderful, homemade, not too sweet with lots of nuts cookies. I'm pretty sure there is lots of butter in ther... Wed, 31 Dec 2014 17:41:31 EST Day 28 soup's on! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5840422 Yesterday was a snack day, nothing too bad, some popcorn, and some chocolates....nothing crazy!

I did try to get in more steps than I do on my rest days, mostly because I've not been hitting 70,000 steps a week, and I had no problem hitting that in the summer! Guess I'm just more active when it's warm and sunny out, go figure! I was close to 9,000 steps which is pretty good considering my scratchy throat kept me from going skiing with Larry. He said the conditions weren't as g... Mon, 29 Dec 2014 09:06:26 EST Day 27 some simple successes http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5839781 Yesterday was a no-night-noshing day. I was assisted by the headache that came on early evening (right before dinner) that made me not very hungry....and tired, so I went to bed pretty early (before 8pm!). I even skipped my usual reading in bed before shutting out the lights....that's how tired I was.

But I did get in my steps for the day! I was trying to get to 15,000 so my weekly average would be 10,000 steps per day, and I hit it. I did get out for a walk on the trails beh... Sun, 28 Dec 2014 09:46:22 EST day 26 step it up! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5839232 Last night was a snack night, had some popcorn (yummy!) and a few chocolates that I got from my dad for Christmas. Everything I got from my family this year involved chocolate in some way, they know me! And I won't have to buy chocolate for quite some time! I may see how long the stash will last, I'm guessing it may be February before I run out, but who knows?

I'd like to get a walk in today at some point, I've been slacking off on my steps lately, even with waking to work twice... Sat, 27 Dec 2014 09:53:24 EST day 25 family holiday http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5838938 We went to my sister's house for Christmas, made it just before they served dinner! I had to move quickly to get my kale and pancetta dish ready, and ended up burning the first batch of pine nuts! 198 but I had more, and ended up just adding to the pan as the kale was cooking. It turned out great! Lots of good food, roast beef and ham, mashed potatoes, asparagus wrapped in proscuitto, and needless to say I was stuffed when dinner was through! I also wore some "skinny jeans", n... Fri, 26 Dec 2014 18:26:16 EST Day 24 Let it storm! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5838406 Snack day yesterday, so moving on....

It was also Christmas Eve, and the boss kindly let us go home early, so I left about noon, after finishing up my e-mail. It was nice to be home since it was starting to get windy, and I did encounter a few drops on the way....and then around 4 or so it just started coming in, wind, rain, sleet! I heard a loud clatter on the roof, that just kept going "thud, thud, thud" and while I gave consideration to Santa and the reindeer, it really was mu... Thu, 25 Dec 2014 14:57:15 EST Day 23 early morning http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5837869 No snacking last night, although when I got home Larry was out (he went skiing and then had to run some errands) so I ended up having a pre-dinner snack of some cheese and crackers. But I did not indulge after dinner, and that's my current challenge so 248 . I think for next month I'm going to change the challenge to pick up my knitting again, it's been just sitting there for months, and I think if I add that as a challenge, I'll get back to it!

I signed up for an ear... Wed, 24 Dec 2014 08:35:35 EST Day 22 feeling strong http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5837388 Yesterday was a snack day. I like popcorn 477 and often have that for my after dinner snack, so yesterday was no exception. I poured my normal serving into a bowl, but oddly was not able to finish it! That is unusual for me, as I'm a card carrying member of the "clean plate" club, so normally finish everything I'm served. I know this is not a good practice, but it's so ingrained, that I'm happy to see glimpses every now and again that I don't have to do it!

Had a goo... Tue, 23 Dec 2014 08:46:20 EST Day 21 skiing in slop http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5836721 Skipped the snacks last night, so I should be back on track, since last week was kind of crazy, and I didn't do the every other day thing. Still I had 2 two day streaks of not snacking, mostly because of social events, so I'm OK with getting back to a routine this week, even with Christmas coming!

We got out for a ski yesterday, and while I love skiing, and was glad to get out, the conditions were variable, and I tweaked my back a couple of times. I'm happy to report that it fee... Mon, 22 Dec 2014 09:01:25 EST Day 20 back to the snack http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5836240 Yep, after a couple of days of not snacking after dinner, I did hit the snacks last night, not too bad, but it was a quiet evening, compared to the past few days, and I was grateful for that! I was falling asleep around 8:30, so went to bed, and got a very restful night sleep!

It was a windy, blustery, cloudy day, so we stayed in and did stuff around the house, I imagine we will get out today for a ski, if it's nicer out. No wind so far this morning, so it's looking good!
<... Sun, 21 Dec 2014 09:08:59 EST Day 19 friends and cake http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5835854 last night turned into another no snack night, probably because Larry surprised me with a birthday dinner, and had invited some friends over, so by the time they left it was late, and we just went to bed! I was not happy when I got home from my massage, and found out he was having this surprise dinner, the house was a mess, I wasn't prepared for company, and after a week of work and a relaxing massage, all I really wanted was to curl up on the couch in my pj's and relax. But they were comin... Sat, 20 Dec 2014 11:18:45 EST Day 18 you can't control the reactions.... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5835316 Well, I had set this month up from the start so that my birthday would be a snacking day, and here it was, and I felt so full after the chicken and potatoes Larry served up that I didn't even finish the salad! So it turned into a non-snack day. I'll take it. And I'll have the salad for lunch today, so don't think it will go to waste!

Yesterday was also a run/walk day, I ran in to work, and this was my fastest run so far for the month, just under 11 min mile! I think because I... Fri, 19 Dec 2014 09:03:16 EST Day 17 switching it up http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5834843 Since the day before yesterday ended up being a no snack day, I went and snacked it up yesterday! I may have hit those coconut chocolate almonds a bit too hard! They are like Lay's potato chips, you can't eat just one! Note to self: don't even start! 15

Pilates was nice yesterday, for the next 2 weeks I'm going to have to switch it up, since the gym is closing early on Christmas Eve and NYE, they won't be having the 4:30 class. I'm going to the 7am class next week... Thu, 18 Dec 2014 09:17:17 EST Day 16 get to it! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5834344 Well last night was supposed to be a snack night, but instead we were invited to our neighbor's for a Hanukkah celebration, and we got back later than we normally go to bed, so, no snacking! I'll see how it goes tonight, I may or may not snack (I had the every other day plan going so I would be able to snack on my birthday if I wanted, but that's tomorrow....) I think I should be able to get back on track. Getting in late meant getting to sleep late, which led to getting up later than usua... Wed, 17 Dec 2014 09:54:14 EST Day 15 Happy Hanukkah! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5833781 No snacking last night. I did have a giant salad with dinner (Larry likes to pile it on the salads!) and that really filled me up (I'm still feeling it this morning, and not really in a good way...).

Had my third training session at the new gym last night, it was a calorie burner! My heart rate ended up in the 160's, so I was feeling it! Feels good to be able to push some weight around like that.

We had some pretty snow falling yesterday morning, it was so lovely fa... Tue, 16 Dec 2014 08:52:16 EST day 14 snacking and skiing! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5833311 Yep, it was a snack day....and a ski day! First day out for the season (we have season passes to Royal Gorge, a local ski area) and we got a light dusting of snow while we were out (for about an hour) we met a friend who also has a season pass, so we skied with him, and then went to his place for dinner with his girlfriend. Really nice day! I was the designate driver, so abstained from the booze until I got home and had a glass of wine with my snacks!

Today is training day, so I... Mon, 15 Dec 2014 10:07:03 EST Day 13 sticking to it! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5832754 Yesterday day was a no snack night, and even though I started to feel hungry just before bed, and even contemplated breaking my goal, I stuck to it, resisted the urge, and just went to bed. Had a good night's sleep too!

We were planning to ski yesterday, but the afternoon crept in and it ended up being too late to get out, plus the area only has a few track groomed (only 10K open) so Larry decided to go for today instead. Hopefully they will have more groomed today, and it will... Sun, 14 Dec 2014 09:30:59 EST day 12 training plan coming together http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5832401 Snack day, but I didn't go nuts (actually I did EAT nuts...but in limited quantity) and did not go whole hog on the indulging. Having a big salad with dinner didn't hurt either, it's so filling!

I pulled a workout from the "Women's Guide to Strength Training" program I had purchased a few months back, but never got around to trying. I'm still looking for a good fit for my current regimen. I think this might do the trick, although it was pretty short when it was over and done. Bu... Sat, 13 Dec 2014 12:53:38 EST Day 11 made it home before the storm http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5831834 Yesterday was a no snack day, and finally the scale is slowly headed in the right direction....I also told Larry I wanted a light dinner, and he did a great job with that! I'm hoping more diligence on my food choices will get me back where I was only a few weeks ago. My digestive issues are another problem, but I think I may wait until January when I can just go see the GI specialist without going through my PCP.

Yesterday was predicted to be stormy, and I was planning on walki... Fri, 12 Dec 2014 09:17:19 EST Day 10 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5831279 yesterday was a snacking day...I did indulge. I'm trying to work out a better plan though, so I'll be thinking about what I want to change up here, and will probably try something new in January.

I had my second of 10 Pilates reformer classes yesterday, and the instructor is also a yoga teacher at another studio, and mentioned that they do aerial yoga. I can't wait to try that now, as I had no idea there was a studio in Reno that had that! And the first class is free!
... Thu, 11 Dec 2014 09:10:49 EST Day 9 odds and ends http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5830724 last night was a no snack night, and it went very well. Larry even commented after dinner "you're not having any chocolate or popcorn?" I said I wasn't hungry, and it was true! So no post-dinner munching!

Today I have Pilates this afternoon after work, and I skipped my yoga/meditation yesterday (just didn't feel like if after walking home) so I will get to that here soon, before I head in!

I'm very happy that I am getting a replacement for my last coder that quit ... Wed, 10 Dec 2014 08:34:55 EST Day 8 better late than never! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5830503 I just realized I forgot to blog this morning...so I'll do it now, before dinner. Yesterday was a snack day, and I was left to my own devices for dinner since Larry was at a speaker last night. I had leftovers, and then some snacks, watched some Netflix, and then hit the sack. Pretty quiet evening.

But before that I had my second training with Iain at the new gym. It was going OK, but my inner hip flexors started feeling really sore about half way into it, so we switched from l... Tue, 9 Dec 2014 21:41:58 EST Day 7 party #3 over and out! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5829518 Yesterday was a no snack night, and I'm calling this one good! We did have the 3 party of the weekend to attend last night, our neighbors joined us, and it was pretty fun! I sometimes feel out of place at these French Club meetings, since I don't speak French, but I was able to mix it up, and talked to quite a few folks, enjoyed some really good food (a couple of wonderful salads, one of which was a kale and pomegranate seed salad, mmmmm!) and finally a slice of buche de Noel

h... Mon, 8 Dec 2014 08:08:05 EST Day 6 holiday party #2 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5829039 This is the weekend for holiday parties in my world, my company's party was Friday night, I had a co-worker invite me to a cookie exchange/Pampered Chef party yesterday, and today is Larry's French club holiday party. That's a lot of party in one weekend! But after that, I think we are fairly party-free for the rest of the month (actually I think Larry has another group event next week, so it may not be the end of the parties, but we don't have any weekends booked that I'm aware of!)
... Sun, 7 Dec 2014 09:52:40 EST day 5 holiday party time! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5828581 Last night was a qualified no snack night, it was our company holiday party, a rather large, extravagant affair, with hors dourves of bruchetta, cheese and crackers to start (I limited it to one small plate with a couple bruchetta, and a few crackers with cheese. Dinner was a nice mix of salads, beef, fish or eggplant parmesan (I had a little of each), also broccolini (I love that stuff!) and a plain roll which I skipped. The dessert table is pretty much the reason I like to attend this e... Sat, 6 Dec 2014 11:20:21 EST Day 4 sore quads http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5827992 Last night was a snack night. I wasn't very hungry after dinner, that probably lightened the snacking up, as I did not indulge as much as I have in the past. That's good!

My quads are pretty sore, probably from the monster mile on Weds. I was thinking about jogging in today, I'll see if that happens or not, if I'm too sore when I start out, I'll probably just walk in. Either way, it's supposed to be not so rainy today, I hope that's still the case!

Pilates was good y... Fri, 5 Dec 2014 08:30:13 EST day 3 monster mile http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5827428 No nosh night number 2 for December. Had a big salad with dinner, so I wasn't at all hungry after that, made staying out of the kitchen very easy! (except to get more water)

My workout was pretty intense. I did what I dubbed afterward the "monster mile". Started with 12 lb dumbells, and did 20 (total) walking lunges with an overhead press on the long sides of the track, and 20 side squat with bicep curls (switching sides at the other end of the track) on the short ends of the t... Thu, 4 Dec 2014 09:02:16 EST Day 2 Let it snow! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5826870 Last night was a snack night, not pretty! but tonight will be no snacking, so it all evens out, i think that's what is helping me stick to this scheme/plan/goal.

I jogged in to work yesterday, and while it was a little cloudy, it was mostly dry, so I really did not think much about the weather. Larry had told me a storm was forecast for later in the evening....well, it came a bit earlier than that, like early afternoon! Suffice it to say, I ended up walking home in the rain. ... Wed, 3 Dec 2014 09:19:27 EST Day 30 end of the line, Day 1 begin again http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5826275 I didn't make this a non-snack day, since I had achieved my goal of 15 days already.

This was a very busy day for me, I made 3 different dishes, so the kitchen was in a constant state of prep, cooking and clean up! And now I have a freezer full of meals for the next few weeks.

I am going to continue my every other day of no-night-noshing into December, which is another reason I didn't skip the snacks on the 30th, I wanted to start December on the first, so I'll be s... Tue, 2 Dec 2014 08:54:17 EST Day 29 making leftovers! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5825089 Last night was a snack night, nothing special or new, but yesterday was a bit of craziness, since I had to take the car in for all the flashing dash lights. Turns out it was going to take them a few hours to get to it, so I called Larry for a ride home. We ended up going grocery shopping instead of going straight home, but the stores are decidedly busier in the afternoon on a Saturday than they are when I usually go (as early in the morning as I can) so it was a little crazy. And Larry is ... Sun, 30 Nov 2014 09:34:21 EST
