By Monday a good thaw, but one must use some ice melt to make walking safer for postal workers and for me to make it outside as well.

Since Saturday a cold virus has had hold of me, coughing and congestion. So far the flu has sidestepped me. So even if tired, I can't complain.

Today I got back on the exercise bike for half the usual time, after a break from it. Time to slowly get back in the groove.

I hav... Thu, 22 Feb 2018 22:47:42 EST Strange January Thunderstorm and lost a bit more weight http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6454428 It warmed up, and tonight a thunderstorm arrived in the night. Nothing wakes me up faster than lightning and thunder, but I was thrilled to hear it. I wanted to video it, but as soon as it started, the lightning went away. The rains continue. Very unusual but better than the deep freeze of two weeks.

My scale is being a joy to get on each week.
Today I picked up my weights again, to strengthen my arms, as soon enough it will be yard work time, and must be ready for the work. <... Sun, 21 Jan 2018 23:40:12 EST December was my restart month, finally. http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6446150 For quite a few months, in my mind, I kicked around restarting my better eating habits and exercise. But my heart was not in it.

Then sometime near the beginning of December, I started eating less, even though enjoying a holiday meal and some treats, still noticed the once a week weigh ins, showing some loss.

I weigh every week just to keep mindful of my size, not just when I am trying to improve my health.

I eat when I am hungry, keep distracted by doing thin... Tue, 2 Jan 2018 12:06:16 EST To gobble or not to gobble? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6433628 This year involves two full turkey dinners.

The first was at church, in the evening.
Yes, I made my tummy ache a bit, and had to sit up a few hours for everything to settle before bed. A couple of Tums, and then a fine night's rest with no acid reflux even with the extra serving of dressing.

The next meal is with a precious couple who have had me over for a late lunch for a number of years. She makes a turkey and sides, and sends some home with me so the food goes... Sun, 5 Nov 2017 22:19:59 EST I live in a batty town http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6402118 Yes, it is true, our town has an abundance of brown bats that in over twenty years, has not decreased. We still have lots of insects, but I don't know why with the bats supposedly eating tons of them to stay alive. It is a mystery.

They find their way inside even though my house has newer siding. They end up crawling everywhere finding a way in at times.

I know the routine well. Much earlier than all my neighboring gardens. The west side of my house shaded them from the blazing heat this summer and temperatures were right for the blossoms to set.

There are still more blossoms so may to cooking with tomatoes fo... Since the heat index most days is 100, and very humid even in the mornings and evenings, venturing out isn't happening.

I do water my tomato plants that for the most part are doing well, with lots of tomatoes set on and growing, and more flowers, too. I had put in lifetime plastic slightly raised beds and put in onions and garlic. Onions doing well, garlic I may have to leave till next year if they don't do better. I am new to this so it is a learning experience. In the ground next to my house I put in several tomato plants and also sweet pepper plants. Fri, 7 Oct 2016 08:32:58 EST Eye exam and very busy http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6247036 I had not had eye exam in eight years, so got that done, and very little change in my eyes. I have scars on both retinas, but no problems from them so far. That was from a long ago lung infection when I was in my twenties. I had been dreading going in, but eye pressures better than they ever were, and not much change in vision. Wed, 5 Oct 2016 22:33:11 EST One productive walnut tree http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6234896 Today decided to tackle clearing the front yard of walnuts, so I can mow later in the week. A few walnuts were opened and eaten, but the neighborhood cats seem to keep squirrels away too effectively this year.

I raked for an hour, stopped for ten minutes to rest and drink water. May day.... candy? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6155169 So what gives with May day this year. Once upon a time it meant giving lilacs, or some kind of flower. Now people give you plastic cups full of miniature chocolates, sugar laden hard candies. Okay there was a mini box of raisins that sent my heart racing in bliss! Yay, raisins.

Our culture seems to feel that candy and donuts and .... you name it.... are part of everyday life instead of the occasional treat.

There are so many 'holidays' that candy is being offered almost ... Mon, 2 May 2016 22:53:26 EST 10 lb weights and a hill http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6129791 So the last week, my weights are raised to 10 lbs. I started with fewer reps but will increase. When I get up to 15 reps, I will up the weight again and start over. Less time, more strength. Testing this out to see if it will work for me.

I also use these (so 20 lbs) for weighted squats.

Today I was out with friends and they charged up an extremely steep hill. I managed it fine, and think the squats really helped. Eight months ago there would be no way I could do this. A... Tue, 29 Mar 2016 00:23:08 EST Nonstop strength exercise http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6119858 So I have raised my weights to 7.5 lbs from 5, and do a nonstop 15 minutes session of exercises. I am really enjoying this new weight to challenge me, and I breathe hard now doing this, so better for me. I can do weighted sumo squats easily now.

I can notice that standing from a sitting position is almost effortless.
I spring up like a jackrabbit and that puts a smile on my face.
And I know if I keep at this, it can only get better. Tue, 15 Mar 2016 12:52:38 EST Spring chores beginneth! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6115436 This evening began outdoor spring chores. Step one was an hour and a half of shoveling dirt and leaves from the street by the curb, into a bucket, then carrying them to a pile, to be dealt with another day.

Noticed the bank is over the curb, so mentally noted I could add another chore to the list! Right now the dirt is soft with no weeds/grass growing, so the perfect time to deal with it.

One of the reasons I walk and do weights is so I have the energy to do the yard w... Wed, 9 Mar 2016 19:23:52 EST 5 day Fitbit challenge success! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6112925 I had joined a work week five day challenge on the fitbit site, after being invited. I thought, I can do this!

So it wasn't a huge group of ladies, but all motivated to improve their step count.

I was stoked and did 20,000 steps on Monday thinking I would get an early lead and check out the stats of the others. Lo and behold, one gung ho lady in the bunch was right there with me. Then the next day it was ON!

I really pushed myself all five days to stay in th... Sun, 6 Mar 2016 21:11:32 EST Gotta get out of my holding pattern! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6087226 Seems like the last few months, I have not shifted much for weight. I did not gain which is a victory of sorts, but I am getting antsy for some downward scale movement.

So I set a goal that by the end of the year I could walk five miles at a go, instead of the two miles which I can do now. I never thought of upping my mileage for some reason until a friend suggested this. I was happy with the two miles since that meant I could walk to whatever I needed and back in my small town. ... Wed, 3 Feb 2016 22:47:23 EST December Decisions! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6041784 This month, I will be in my first challenge in a long while, as a Black Panther, in a Winter Meltdown with lots of other lovely people! I hope I am up to this, as my brain is still swimming with just five months since my husband's dying.

What I dislike the most is that I forget my scheduled weekly things! Thu, 3 Dec 2015 13:41:37 EST End of October http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6023300 This month has been one of readjusting my life to my new routines. Sleep is still a difficult issue, but my walking has increased despite the new nerve pain problems in my left leg. Since I know many people that deal with chronic pain everyday, this keeps me up and at it with my motto 'no excuses'.

I am being kind to myself. If I am truly tired, I do my best to rest. If I need to cry, I do. But I also dive in wholeheartedly to my daily walks, and prayer time, bible studies. I s... Thu, 29 Oct 2015 18:49:48 EST So this man impressed me http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6006332 After my husband's death, I made the acquaintance of a man(57 years old) who became a great help to cleaning up my acreage, in trade for items I own. He doesn't have a lazy bone anywhere in his body, and very intelligent (as is his wife!). He is having a good influence on me, as I can see, as rule I've been too lazy. So whenever I resolve my stress related sleep issues, I know I will step my activity up a notch or more. This family has really inspired me. I am so grateful. Having someone to help move a table, etc, made it so much easier and fun to work. So over 7000 steps and not as weary as I normally would be. Had a small hamburger for dinner, then we split a banana split, then walked around our small town graveyard to relax and read tombstones. The older ones are amazing in design. Then drove around to see a fancy stone structure which I never had seen in the cemetery as I've never been down every ro... I had food, water and ibuprofen. But I do seem to have a sinus/inner ear problem making me a tad dizzy.

It did make me feel a bit blah being at my lowest weight in two decades, yet not as fit as I'd like to be. Scary to type, yet I am keeping so busy, I do not think the reality has set in fully yet.

I am boxing up possessions for a short move into town.
