Fri, 9 Aug 2013 08:25:04 EST Summer Challenge http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5404009 My office is renting space in a large complex that has a gym we can use. They're putting on a fitness challenge for July: pay $2 for a fitness assessment, repeat the assessment in a month, and the person who has improved the most will win a prize. I did my assessment today - not too shabby for a desk jockey. If I had been thinking about it, I probably should have held back, but when I see somebody with a clipboard and a stopwatch I get competitive. Now I'll have to work really hard to show so... Thu, 27 Jun 2013 22:01:14 EST So far so good http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5386674 The last two weeks were - interesting. After I lost the initial 5 pounds of glycogen and water, I was sitting at the same weight for the rest of the time. The scale did not budge until this morning, the first day of Phase 2. It's nice to see the reward of being disciplined. Today I celebrated with oatmeal and fresh strawberries from my garden. I'm just hoping my body is not greedily glomming on to the carbs and pasting them back on my waist. On the other hand, now I have fuel to burn; time to... Wed, 12 Jun 2013 08:39:23 EST Once more unto the beach... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5376422 Even though I don't want to get hung up on weight, I was getting tired of my clothes getting slowly tighter and tighter. I've made a few changes over the past year that did diddly-squat for halting this process, so I decided to give my metabolism a real kick in the butt by repeating the South Beach diet. I did it about 7, 8 years ago with good - but not permanent - success. This time around, with everything I've learned from SP, I hope I can make it last. Lost 5 pounds the first week which is... Mon, 3 Jun 2013 08:25:58 EST Happy Weight http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5108043 Today's Spark Coach video was really interesting. I've long thought that height/weight charts aren't realistic for me - the last time I was at my "ideal" weight I was in hospital with the first bout of Crohn's Disease, having lost 10kg or so in a couple months. It was good to hear my belief confirmed by a dietitian. It was also a good reminder that I really don't have any weight-related health problems. My blood pressure, lipids, and blood sugar are great and I'm able to do most anything I wa... Mon, 22 Oct 2012 07:58:27 EST The perpetual student http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4870134 Well, here I am, back on campus after 15 years! Back then it was just one week for a workshop, and this time it's for a two-week "bootcamp for the mind" - two courses for my Masters program in two weeks! Sounds gruelling but I think it will be better than taking two courses the "normal" way while working full time, as I did last semester.

The room is ok for couple weeks, but I can't imagine anybody living here for longer than that. It's much smaller than your average hotel room, ... Mon, 7 May 2012 09:28:14 EST Happy Anniversary, Kitty! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4631075 Yesterday it was exactly one year since we went out to the Abbotsford SPCA shelter and brought Rani back home with us. From being a sick, scared cat who would not come out from under the desk, she has become the uncontested ruler of the house. The dog defers to her and humans work hard to be good cat servants.

By and large she's satisfied with our efforts, except for that door thing. Cats don't see any need for doors, ever. Especially doors that lead outside should be open at all ... Mon, 19 Dec 2011 08:35:58 EST Sir Marley the Brave, Lord Protector http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4626201 Our dog Marley has never paid much attention to raccoons in our yard. In fact, he snored through both times that they raided the goldfish pond. (By the way, take note raccoons: the sushi bar is now closed - we dismantled the pond after the second raid).

One day last summer I was sitting at an open window and could hear the little rascals chattering away in the back yard. I went downstairs and nearly tripped over the dog snoozing on the landing, although the back door was wide open... Thu, 15 Dec 2011 00:16:48 EST Ouch! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4599498 So yesterday I got my flu shot. Then I went to my bootcamp class. After I was done my arm was aching like crazy (a gazillion push-ups right after you get a shot will do that) and I was generally a wreck because I had a very good but taxing core workout.

Today I wasn't feeling too bad, a little sore but in a good way. Then I went to my karate class and first of all Sensei thought it would be a jolly good idea to see how high we could all kick. I was surprised to realize that I can k... Fri, 25 Nov 2011 23:49:15 EST Christmas Junkie http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4593018 Ok, I'll admit it. I'm a Christmas Junkie. There. I've said it.

As soon as the weather turns cold, I get the irresistible urge to go shopping (mostly on line these days), start craft projects and bake traditional German Christmas goodies. I'll restrain myself from decorating the house until the 1st Advent Sunday and I'm rejoicing when it comes early, like this year it's November 27th. I go to Christmas craft fairs and if possible take in any Christmas Markets in the vicinity. Last ... Sun, 20 Nov 2011 21:17:27 EST New Kata http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4547525 Last night I learned Jutte, my 3rd black belt kata. Sensei is really keen on me learning them all quickly so we can practice together. He misses his son, who used to be his pracice partner, but who's now going to school halfway across the country. It's a little sad; we used to have a few black belts in the club but they've all drifted away - not sure why. Well, one family of 4 moved to Ontario; that was a big loss for the club.
Anyway, the reason Sensei needs a partner is because his mem... Sat, 22 Oct 2011 08:43:38 EST Jack of all Trades and (maybe) Master of one http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4540688 So as if I didn't have enough stress in my life I've started a Master's program in Health Informatics. It's online, hugely expensive (but fortunately there is a fund available at my work or else this wouldn't happen) and lots of work. I've spent the last 4 weeks working on this assignment worth 40% of my grade. There is only one other assignment worth 60% (yes, I do know math). Finally submitted it last night, 5 hours short of the deadline which is some kind of new record for me and now I'm w... I had the best intentions but I'm not motivated when I'm by myself.

Never mind; I've started up again with karate class on Tuesday which I had to teach - a great way to get over jet lag! Yesterday I decided to try a 5k walk/run and did it in 43.5 minutes. Not my best time but still under 45 minutes. Today I've joined the 5k run program and I'm aiming to do a 10k next April.

Group power today and kara... Thu, 13 Oct 2011 08:45:54 EST 5k my way! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4467677 Today was race day. I decided to heck with the numbers and just ran for as long as I could. Most of my runs were 5-7 minutes long, with 2 min recovery walks. Considering that I started 5 weeks ago with 1 min runs and 4 min walks that's pretty darn good!

I've done the 5k walk/run three times now, and my time went from 45 min to 40 min 30 sec today. Karate is starting up again tomorrow but I'm planning on at least one run per week, trying to improve. And definitely when I'm going to... Mon, 5 Sep 2011 15:04:38 EST My First 5k! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4457410 I bet most martial arts students have heard at one time or other that "the best way to avoid getting hit is to run away". Ah, but what if you can't run? That's always been my problem, and this August I decided to do something about it. I joined the SP "5k your way walk/jog" 5 week program. The first 4 weeks weren't too bad. I still don't "love" running but I was able to stick with the program.

Today I started week 5. I've figured out that 1 lap=400m, therefore 12.5 laps=5km. When ... Tue, 30 Aug 2011 22:21:30 EST Interesting... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4438042 After not budging for months, this morning the scale showed a 1 pound loss. That's interesting because I hadn't done anything different for food or exercise, but I've been on vacation this last week. Much less stress, and better sleeps. (Except for the one night when the cat was hiding in the linen closet and we all thought she had been eaten by a koyote but that's a different story.)

I'm fairly happy with my weight. I'm still a touch above "healthy" BMI but I know that my strength... Sat, 20 Aug 2011 09:39:45 EST Love my Vacation http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4431522 So far I've been to the gym almost every day - well, except for Sunday but I ran outside instead.
Today I completed Day 2 of Week 3 of my 5 week walk/jog 5k program and I'm seriously considering to continue with the 5k Rookie running program - it's 8 weeks and it seems the first 5 weeks are very much like the 5 week program so I could simply carry on. I still don't "love" running but it's less hard than I thought it would be. I'll see how I feel at the end of the 5 weeks.
I'm also ... Tue, 16 Aug 2011 22:48:42 EST Another Exercise Benefit http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4426126 Week 3, Day 1 of my 5k program. It's perfect running weather so I decided to take it outside instead of the gym. The benefit for me was not to get hung up on the numbers in front of me. The downside is that I have no idea how far I ran but I figured it couldn't have been less than 2 miles as I was at that level already.

And the bonus benefit? Here's what happened: my cat likes to go outside and lose her collar. It's a break-away collar and sure, I'd rather replace the collar than ... Sun, 14 Aug 2011 12:05:58 EST Karate Withdrawal http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4407974 So it's been a week without karate. I totally understand that Sensei wants to spend time with his family, but I miss it. I've started the Walk/Jog 5k 5 week program and so far so good. Although since we finally have summer, I've been doing my running in the gym, with a nice cool fan blowing at me - ahhhhh!

I've also discovered a free tai chi class on Sunday mornings - good stuff; Yang style. Well - it's technically free but there's always a collection box for the hospice which is a... Thu, 4 Aug 2011 23:37:05 EST Take this, evil aerobics lady! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4371415 Two weeks ago I went to this Step 1/2 class and I had to bail after 45 minutes because I was pooped. Last week I decided to go to Zumba instead, but today I felt I had to face the challenge and went back to the class. Not only did I manage to stick out the 60 minutes, I found the abs track to be a piece of cake. And, when she asked "How are you guys doing back there" I gave her a cheery wave. She seemed surprised. She don't know me very well, do she?

18 Mon, 18 Jul 2011 22:57:14 EST I Love Summer! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4354707 This weekend we went to my in-laws' garlic farm for the annual harvest. They have different kinds of garlic and some they had done already, but we helped out with the bulk of it - pulled and processed over 1,000 heads of garlic in those two days.

I've only got two dozen plants of my own and they're not quite ready yet. But when we got back yesterday my raspberries are starting to ripen, my faithful old gooseberry bush is producing lovely purple berries, and today or tomorrow I'll ... Mon, 11 Jul 2011 08:34:08 EST Time flies when you're having fun, or as Kermit would say, time's fun when you're having flies http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4348364 Tonight at Group Power I got to talking to a lady about my own age. I was putting 5kg weights on and she was using two 1kg. That made me think I've been doing these classes for about 10 months now and have increased my weights very slowly. Actually tonight was the first time EVER I used the 5kg for my warm-up, but all went well. Of course next week we'll have a new routine so who knows how this will work out.

On Mondays I'm using the weightroom for the heavier weights and fewer rep... Thu, 7 Jul 2011 23:07:21 EST De-cluttering http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4277322 Today I did a big job cleaning out my craft room. Three garbage bags full to the Sally Ann, plus another half bag that was just junk to go out with the trash. Now my room looks a lot better, I got inspired to finish some of my UFOs, and I worked right through lunch without missing it! After all my work I rewarded myself with a turkey breast sub from Subway.

30 Sat, 4 Jun 2011 20:25:34 EST Woohoo! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4263568 After all the practice and planning and three classes a week for five years I got my first grade black belt today. How do I feel?

www.nhlcyberfamily.org/special/happy
dance.htm

Sun, 29 May 2011 17:45:06 EST One Year Sparkversary http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4121495 So it's been a year with Spark. I've lost another 20 pounds but most importantly I've learned a lot about nutrition and fitness and have gotten into some healthy habits. Although I'm still tracking fitness and nutrition, I find that I've got a better handle on portion sizes and portion control. I've taken the step to using free weights and have tried out a few things, like fitness classes and rock climbing, that I wouldn't have dreamed of a year ago.

Looking forward to the next ye... Sun, 27 Mar 2011 13:09:53 EST I'm doing this for fun?!? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4099927 OMG - I went to Group Power tonight and my arms are still shaking, 2.5 hours later. If somebody paid me for doing this I would walk out on them.

It's good for me...it's good for me...it's good for me... Fri, 18 Mar 2011 00:05:26 EST Killer Yoga Again http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4040095 I've done yoga for a while and don't normally feel sore the next day, but this week and last week was pretty challenging. Sensei wanted to see my brown belt katas today - there are a few moves that made my already sore muscles say "uncle"! But at least the second hour was sparring - lots of fun as usual. Tue, 22 Feb 2011 23:33:31 EST Finally getting the hang of this http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4013487 Yesterday I had Indian food AND Chocolate Fondue AND stayed within my calories AND lost a pound.

244

I made the Low Fat Butter Chicken from SP Recipes, had only 1/2 cup of rice, chose roti instead of naan, and planned my calories around the dinner/dessert. Sun, 13 Feb 2011 08:04:27 EST Not so good day http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4000217 Yesterday I was at an all-day union meeting. We meet at a hotel that serves very yummy but not necessarily healthy food. Long story short, I had 2 of everything.
40 2 24
But since I've been there before, at least I mitigated the damage by having only fruit for breakfast, and after I got home I was still stuffed so I had no more food that day. But still... it's so easy to fall back into bad habits.

Today is a new day and new choices to be mad... Tue, 8 Feb 2011 08:07:24 EST De Agony of De Feet http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3985736 Zumba with a different instructor tonight - my butt was thoroughly kicked. But - it was great fun!
344 198 Wed, 2 Feb 2011 23:35:46 EST No turning back now http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3979790 Yesterday my sensei ordered my black belt. It takes about a month as it has to be embroidered and then sewn together. So now it's starting to get serious. I'm doing well with my katas and with teaching a class but I've got to work a lot more on the weapons, especially sai. And I need to come up with some good kumite moves.

I don't know how I'll be going to sleep for the next 5 months! Tue, 1 Feb 2011 09:03:48 EST Digging out of the dumps http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3949706 Last week was much better. I did a few fun things:

o Monday: Zumba. This time there was a smaller class, more instruction and a lot more fun.
o Tuesday: Sparring. There were only four of us so sensei had us doing teams, except at one point we forgot who our partners were and everybody went after sensei. Good thing he has a sense of humour!
o Wednesday: Group Power. Not a lot of laughs but felt good for the workout.
o Thursday: Rest day - played around with an SP reci... Sat, 22 Jan 2011 10:37:11 EST Sick and tired of cruddy weather http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3929103 I've had it with this winter! We've had hardly any snow but day after day is cold, gloomy and wet. I feel like I'm living in Mordor. And the days are still so short!

It's really starting to affect my energy levels. Today I could only manage half my swim. My ears were hurting, my eyes were sore, and I had zero motivation. Then I went to the gym in the afternoon and again could only get through about half my workout. I could be coming down with something but I think it's just this ri... Sun, 16 Jan 2011 00:01:07 EST Next stop: the octagon? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3919807 Yesterday we've started sparring again, after over a year without. In the Nisei style, it's possible to get up to Shodan without sparring, but it's still a useful exercise, and fun. I feel a little guilty for having so much fun hitting people, because normally my philosophy is more along the lines of "the greatest victory is the battle not fought" and so on. I also tend to get competitive and it's not really fair to the juniors - got to watch that!

One thing I can be really proud o... Wed, 12 Jan 2011 23:13:39 EST Update on Kitty - typing around her as she's sitting on my lap http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3907589 So the new addition has become firmly established in my house. We named her "Rani", Punjabi for "Queen". She had some health problems - pyometra, an upper respiratory infection and on top of everything an ear infection, but she's getting over those problems and through it all she's been an amazingly loving and affectionate cat. It's hard to imagine how anybody could have abandoned her. She even gets along with the dog!

On the lifestyle front I've been sticking pretty close to my go... Sun, 9 Jan 2011 19:08:53 EST The Bestest Christmas Present! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3851122 I wasn't looking forward to my first Christmas in twenty years without cats. Two days ago somebody posted at work that there's a cat in a shelter who desperately needs a home as she was really depressed and in danger of getting sick. Bad news: she's black and apparently lots of people don't like black cats.

Long story short; I went to the shelter, fell in love, and now she's busy exploring my office. She hasn't met the dog yet but she can hear him through the door and she appears i... Sat, 18 Dec 2010 17:52:22 EST Re-booting my program http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3839034 I've been sitting on a plateau the size of the Canadian Shield for the last three months. Yesterday I decided to reset my goals. Hmm - no wonder; my calorie allotment is quite a bit smaller than what I had been eating. It's actually not bad because it shows my progress. There is one good thing about being heavy: you burn more calories when exercising and you get to eat more.

I was worried that I wouldn't be able to stick to the new limits, especially since yesterday was our staff ... Sun, 12 Dec 2010 07:03:38 EST Do I look like a mountain goat? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3824030 Well, I went and tried indoor rock climbing today. For the first time it wasn't too bad I think, although I only got about 20 minutes of actual climbing in. For one thing I had to learn how to use the equipment, and then I had to get up my nerve. I got about halfway up the beginner wall when I realized how high up I was. That's when I remembered I'm scared of heights.
40
I let myself back down and did some deep breathing before I tackled the wall again. And again. I'm so... I'm so glad I took another week off work. Normally it doesn't bother me so much, but I think because it's so dark anyway it makes it harder for me to adjust. When I go to Germany in the summertime, I get back to much more daylight which helps.

Monday: trying to remember what day it is and what I'm doing here
Tuesday: went to my karate class - first horse stance in three weeks - ouch!
Wednesday: walked the dog and cleaned up the... Let's see:

Eat well: I tried, I really tried. And I didn't do too badly but not as well as I had hoped, especially in the fruit and veggie department. At least this time I didn't go for a total pig-out on German bread, cheeses and lunch meats but my clothes do fit a little tighter than before. From past experience I know a fair bit of this is fluid.

Exercise whenever possible: We lived on the... Tue, 30 Nov 2010 18:32:40 EST Duh - Again! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3765672 I can't believe as a mental health professional I'm so dense when it comes to my own well-being. Over the past month I've become increasingly bothered by obsessive thoughts of death and was slipping back into unhealthy habits. Yesterday was my first vacation day and I was finally able to take a good look at myself. I was shocked to discover how depressed I was feeling. I was on the verge of phoning my doctor but something compelled me to do a stress level test first as I had a few things happ... Even though I haven't been a teenager in a long time this still happens to me now and then.

This morning I walked into the kitchen and my husband gasped, grabbed his chest and jumped about three feet into the air. Apparently I "scared" him. Since he is a very overweight, middle-aged guy, him grabbing his chest like that scared ME so I grumbled sarcastically that maybe I should hire a piper to walk ahead... Wed, 13 Oct 2010 00:27:01 EST Top of the Morning http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3696363 Today I used my flex day to go to an early morning Group Power class. Different instructor, new release - my butt was thoroughly kicked. Feels great!
198
I think I'll add this to my routine. Since I can only do it one day every two weeks it won't get old. It's nice to see the sky grow lighter towards the end of the workout. And, I've still got the whole day ahead of me. (Including Chinese food later for lunch)
334 Wed, 6 Oct 2010 10:43:32 EST Always a silver lining http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3667002 Ok, I think I'm on the mend. After all it's just a cold. And I've eaten just up to the minimum calories as I've not had an appetite so this morning the scale showed a welcome drop of one pound (after not budging for a couple of weeks). When I had colds before I would just eat as always and not pay attention to my body or if I even enjoyed the food. I credit SP with having helped me to learn to listen to my body. I hope I can put this insight to good use in the future.

Fri, 24 Sep 2010 09:23:32 EST Grr - last day of summer and sick http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3663387 When my kids were still in school I got sick every year around this time, because they would bring germs home from school and generously share them around the house. Now that they are adults I thought I would be safe but nooooo - still got sick. Sore throat, body aches, lightheaded. No gym for me today! Comfort food and lots of fluids all the way.

29 Wed, 22 Sep 2010 22:32:19 EST Not a black belt yet, but still... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3660088 Today I got a new belt. Not because of grading up, but because my old brown belt was hanging down to my shins and kept slapping me in the face when I jumped. It was a size 8, and now I'm back to a size 5.

It would have been nice to get my black belt but I know it will happen next June. And I also know my Sensei won't have to go and get one custom made because of my size.

Getting there is all the fun!
216 Tue, 21 Sep 2010 23:16:11 EST With Great Power Comes Great Pain http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3656832 Well, Group Power kicked my butt again, but not as badly as last week. I guess that's progress of a sort. I know for sure I won't be upping my weights any time soon; I'm glad I can lift my arms enough to type!
198 84 Mon, 20 Sep 2010 23:59:16 EST
