On the positive side, I get to spend more time with my family. The negative side is obvious and there's no need to get into that here. I keep telling myself that a door closed on one opportunity leaving the chance for something better in the future. It's hard waiting for the future when you live in a challenging present.

Needless to say, finding the strength to lose weight has been... Fri, 10 Aug 2012 14:41:56 EST Hiking it! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4994378 Having moved back to my hometown, I've been able to get reacquainted with the hiking trails that are nearby and accessible. Sharing the experience with my son has been exceptionally gratifying. But the real bonus has been the exercise value of it for both of us. He's a little skinny guy and certainly doesn't need it as much as I do, but good habits begin early. Tue, 31 Jul 2012 08:58:20 EST Treadmill Fodder http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2344656 With total credit going to NEALP81 for the idea, I wanted to post my playlist online. I tend to want to rock out while I'm pushing it and I'm a little old school.

Here's my iPod playlist. I set it to shuffle every time so there's no sense to the order below...

If I Had $1,000,000 - Barenaked Ladies (good for visualizing, not so much for the beat)
Get What You Need - Jet
Gonna Need My Help - The Muggs
She Sells Sanctuary - The Cult
FFF - PIL
Semi-... Tue, 25 Aug 2009 10:42:40 EST Rough times, life happens. http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2328694 Father went into the hospital for a battery of tests yesterday. I spent the whole day there keeping my mom company.

With all of the stress involved, I just chucked the whole idea of diet and eating smart out the window. I gave myself a float day and for the most part ate whatever I wanted and was available. Boy was I surprised when I stepped on the scale and it read the same weight as before. Do a few days of eating like that and I'm sure I'd be seeing quite the uptick quickly. <BR... Wed, 19 Aug 2009 11:58:37 EST Pushin' it http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2304316 Whew. I'm beat.

Got back up on that treadmill again, despite my body's protests, and pushed the limits. This time, I set my Nike+ to 5K and knew there was going to be a point in which I walked. The question was when. Was I going to beat yesterday's 3K distance? Was I going to beat my previous 1 mile time?

Yep and yep.

3.5K before walking. I walked for 1K. Ran the final .5K. Finished the whole 5K distance in 27:04. If this was last year's Farmington Road Race (... Mon, 10 Aug 2009 19:36:16 EST Could the plateau be over? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2299832 For the record, I've never had a weight loss plateau before. Having it hover around the 13 pound loss mark for almost a week wasn't pleasant. Then, all of the sudden, I hit the scale this morning and...poof...15 pounds gone. More better.

Suffering through some trying times personally. But not letting any of it effect my eating habits. Unfortunately, it's been seriously negatively impacting my exercise habits. I did manage to jog 2.5K last time on the treadmill. Makes me think that ... Sun, 9 Aug 2009 09:28:14 EST Revvin' it up! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2281981 Wife and I just picked up Wii Active. It's kicking both our butts, and that's a good thing. We needed our butts kicked. Of course, today I had to show off and hit the treadmill for an extra 10 minutes after the workout.

After a very nice weekend with lots of family and a weekend where I just created (finally) a Facebook account and connected with a TON of people, I'm facing a Monday. Could be a great day!

Have I mentioned I love working from home? Mon, 3 Aug 2009 00:51:53 EST Trouble staying on task http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2271997 Damn snacks.

All day long, mind your food. Track what you eat. Try to fit in exercise. I'm even adding in more fiber (e.g. Benefiber in my water) to feel fuller. When those around me aren't making the best choices, I've been staying on course.

Then the evening rolls around. You get tired of it all. My wife and I have been going through the Harry Potter movies (she's a huge fan, I've never seen them). Well, you know that movies need popcorn. Next thing you know, the cal c... Thu, 30 Jul 2009 09:15:35 EST Killer treadmill session http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2260887 I wasn't going to push it. I was just going to take a nice stroll on the treadmill for fear that I would hurt my back again. I did a little yoga to loosen up before starting.

But then, around the 1/2 mile mark, the tunes on my iPod got me jazzed. I decided to go for broke. After 30 minutes and 2 miles, I was feeling pretty high. That runner's high I barely remember from my youth.

A shower never felt so good.

It's been a tough 24 hours knowing that my wife brou... Sun, 26 Jul 2009 15:36:59 EST More better http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2254325 New client mailed deposit check.

No real mistakes to be had with my eating habits.

Didn't get a chance to exercise.

Finished meeting of Chamber of Commerce board. Felt energized afterward. Now working on something creative. Thu, 23 Jul 2009 20:28:05 EST Whew! What a (rough) day! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2248531 Meetings with prospective clients all went poorly.

Much of the day spent driving around.

Check engine light came on. Car now in garage. Had to take bus home.

Rained all day.

Glad I'm finally in my pajamas. Tue, 21 Jul 2009 20:58:23 EST 300 miles today - driving http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2245441 Had to do a crazy trip to Boston today. Drove up to deliver a video tape to New England Sports Network. Then had to drive all the way to the CT shore for a meeting before heading home. Over 300 miles.

I'm finding when you're on the road and have to get places, it's real easy to get back into bad habits. Especially when good habits haven't been formed yet.

Tried to redeem myself at dinner time. Mon, 20 Jul 2009 20:51:04 EST Treadmill activity http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2239189 Finally got back up on that treadmill. Back's still killing me so I went much slower than I typically do meaning I burned fewer calories, but at least I got on it. Sat, 18 Jul 2009 13:26:54 EST Losing weight too fast? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2237884 I've been doing some reading, both on SP and other sites, about weight loss. A good goal is about a pound a week. I'm starting to get worried because I've been on a pound per day streak. My appetite is almost gone until I finally make myself eat. Then I want to keep on eating, but I don't. Certainly, tracking my calories every day has made me much more aware of what I'm doing. I wouldn't have been surprised to have been told that I was eating in excess of 3k cal/day. Tonight, just about ready... Fri, 17 Jul 2009 21:18:37 EST Oh, the pain! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2235025 The lower back pain I was feeling yesterday has turned into a real pain today. Barely able to move. Did a slow 1 mile walk just to try to stretch it. Doesn't feel any different.

Now, where's that heating pad? Thu, 16 Jul 2009 19:41:31 EST In-between day http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2230885 It's not that I'm too tired or don't want to. But I'm thinking that it's ok to give your body a rest once in a while. Yesterday's treadmill session was a beating that I didn't expect. Feeling lower back sore so might just want to do some yoga. Wed, 15 Jul 2009 11:38:16 EST Unhappy treadmill day http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2228058 Whew...it wasn't so much as I didn't feel like getting on the treadmill. But once I was on, it just didn't feel right. My knee was giving me an issue before I started like it always does and felt better once I got going. But it was an effort getting those 30 mins in. Another 2 miles down in my goals on both Nike+ and the exercise.lbl.gov website.

We don't have coverage for watching my son on Tuesdays so he's with me while I work. Everything bogs down then workwise, but what's bette... Tue, 14 Jul 2009 12:03:52 EST Back on that horse http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2224421 After doing the full 5K distance, I gave my body a rest yesterday (if you can call only 30 mins of yard work and 30 mins of cleaning a rest). Today, it was right back up on that treadmill.

Feeling a little discouraged that the weight is taking its time coming off, but then again, it didn't suddenly appear either. Mon, 13 Jul 2009 09:29:10 EST 5K - first pass http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2221575 Set out on the treadmill to walk (9.5 km/min pace) to see how a 5K stroll felt. Around the 3K mark, I started feeling a little cocky so I broke into a jog.

Good lesson there. Don't overdo it.

Made it the whole 5K though.

Not planning to walk the real one in 10 weeks. More work to do... Sun, 12 Jul 2009 00:30:56 EST Goal set...now let's head for it http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2220090 Shared my 5k goal with my wife. She's almost as excited as I am.

I love having a support system, both here at home and online with SP.

I've been checking out active.com for inspiration and came across this article:

6 Reasons to Run a 5K

Put a few 5Ks on your schedule.

By Jeff Galloway
Runner's World

5K's are one of the most popular races out there, and here are six reasons why:

1. Great people, but I'm not a big fan of going back there.

4th of July was fun. Very challenging in the food department, but I'm still in the honeymoon phase with Sparkpeople so the shear newness of it has helped me want to stay away from some of the foods that I know are bad.

Trip home meant stopping for fast food for lunch. Bad moves there. Live and learn. I'll be better about it next time. Mon, 6 Jul 2009 00:15:16 EST It all begins with the first day... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2193602 There's some things I really miss about high school. I especially liked the being able to run up and down stairs without sweating. I also liked the playing football all day without needing a break. And baseball. And basketball. And hockey. You get the idea.

That was a long time ago. However, not being that old (yet), it shouldn't be as bad as it is. Therefore, on the cusp of the start of a new month, a new quarter, and the second half of the year, it's time to start the long haul b... Tue, 30 Jun 2009 21:32:23 EST
