I knew I had some problems hearing but it turns out I have mild to severe hearing loss in the high ranges - which is the same thing my Dad had, and one of my brothers has. It's due to exposure to loud noises (think 70's hard rock music, which had to be played head banging loud) .

I spend almost 2 hours trying different hearing aids and wandering around the store. I would try on a pair and wander around the tv ... Fri, 14 Mar 2014 00:05:49 EST 7th Thursday http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5647111 I've got a GREAT daughter. When I got home yesterday she had fixed the wheelbarrow and then picked up the rock path that had gone between my old square foot garden. She had also raked the soil smooth so it was ready to put down grass seed. The cats love it. While I was looking at it one of them used it as a litter box! I'm going to wait until this weekend to put seed down. I'm going to need some time to put some chicken wire over that area after I seed it. Maybe that will deter the cat... Thu, 13 Mar 2014 16:29:10 EST 7th Wednesday http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5646282 Yesterday, instead of coming home and getting on the computer to chat with my teams I went to my DD's room and chatted with her. Since I have a doctor's appointment on Thursday after work we decided to have our family dinner tonight. She really wanted the tacos that I was going to make for Thursday's dinner so I put the meat in the crock pot before I left for work.

It rained all yesterday so I wasn't able to get out to the garden. I've gotten most of the back cleaned up, one of the 4 x 4 garden boxes planted with some cold weather crops and put under a hoop house, and the pond put back into operation. Today it decided to pour rain so that put a stop to my momentum. I still have one more 4 x 4 box to finish ma... Mon, 10 Mar 2014 19:56:01 EST 6th Monday http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5638931 Woke up with a slight headache that was raging by 3 p.m. Came home, rested and I'm starting to feel better. Didn't go to the gym.

Got my 5 veggies in.

Got my food tracked and I'm well below my calorie limit.

I've got to get my food prepped for tomorrow and make it an early night tonight. Mon, 3 Mar 2014 20:20:38 EST A Terrible Hurt http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5635512 It's amazing how a few words from a co-worker can hurt and change how you view yourself. I've known this officer since he started about 5 years ago and liked him as a person and respected him as a co-worker. Today, in a meeting, we were discussing the openings and promotional opportunities that were coming up in Boise with the state taking over the private prison. I mentioned that I had thought about moving to Boise. This co-worker said "I've been thinking of you moving to Boise for 5 yea... Thu, 27 Feb 2014 19:16:52 EST 5th Wednesday http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5634567 Spent yesterday sitting around the hospital watching one of the offenders. Didn't get much walking in there. When I finally got off work it was so nice that I decided to garden instead of go to the gym. I shoveled & moved 2 wheelbarrows of dirt then got the clippers and started cleaning up the perennials and getting rid of the dead annuals. It was a good 45 minute work out. There was much more to do but my back finally said "No more!". Today is another beautiful day so I'm going back ... Mon, 24 Feb 2014 20:06:01 EST SMART Goals Revisited http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5631878 I don't seem to be doing very well with the SMART Goal that I posted 4 weeks ago. So, it's time to tweak the behavior goals.

1 - Work out for 1 hour per day. Lets face it - I hate to work out. I like walking outside, but not on a treadmill. On a treadmill I start thinking of all the things I need to get done and after 30 minutes I hop off and leave. It's too cold and windy right now to to walk outside so I will have to make do with the treadmill. I've signed up for Audible.co... Sun, 23 Feb 2014 19:10:25 EST 3rd Thursday http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5623474 Sore throat, achey, stuffy nose, headache - decided to stay home from work today. I lazed around, played on the computer, did the dishes. This afternoon I was feeling better so I did a little reorganizing.

Probably not the best choice but I had DD go to the grocery store for some fried chicken and cole slaw. There were also some Hawaiian roles in the meal but I didn't have any. I pulled as much of the skin and breading off of the chicken before I ate it. Not so much because ... Thu, 13 Feb 2014 21:29:36 EST 3rd Tuesday http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5621684 Today was ST day. I walked a mile on the treadmill to warm up and then did the Beginners Total Body Workout from About.com that BLC24 had for TNT a few weeks ago. I added a few of the exercises that I liked from last week and finished off with stretching and yoga exercised that my chiropractor suggested for the pinched nerve that I had.

NSV - Today I was finally able to balance on my left leg while pulling my right foot behind me for the count of 30 without touching the wall.... Tue, 11 Feb 2014 19:45:37 EST 3rd Monday http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5620759 It was back to they gym today. I found a 5K training program on the treadmill that I used. I only made it 2 miles in 41 minutes. I'm going to continue to use it and see if I can 1) Do the whole 5K and 2) do it in under 40 minutes. 39.8 was my best speed about 5 years ago. My stamina isn't what it was 5 years ago, but that's something I can work on.

I did do some exercise yesterday, but not at the gym. I fired up my Wii and bowled 3 games and played a game of tennis. Not su... Mon, 10 Feb 2014 20:32:05 EST 3rd Saturday http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5618907 After a week of arctic temperatures and snow today was a Hawaiian heat wave. It got into the mid 40's! It rained and there was a hard wind but I'll take that over snow and 17 degree weather.

My Fitbit quit on me Thursday night. Friday I used a pedometer that work had given out to promote exercise. It wasn't exactly accurate. A trip around the institution would normally give me 500 steps but this one only recorded 350. Sat, 8 Feb 2014 19:32:14 EST 2nd Wednesday http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5616266 This week is whizzing by!

I didn't make it to the gym yesterday. I was changing clothes at work and realized I hadn't packed any tennis shoes. Fortunately I had brought long pants to work out in. I put on my work shoes back on and headed home. I did have all the best intentions to do my ST & yoga stretches when I got home, but DD started talking and then Mom came over and that was it.

I did go to the gym today and had a good 30 - 40 minute workout. I have to admit that with the cold keeping me inside I was starting to get bored. I finally pulled out an old To-do list and got started on a few of the forgotten projects.

It was back to the gym today. I did a 1/2 mile on the elliptical and then did the ST workout from last week and ended with some yoga stretches.

I did the weigh-in for my jobs BLC today. Mon, 3 Feb 2014 23:01:58 EST 2nd Saturday http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5612444 I got back on the exercise & eating track today. I took a 30 minute walk around the block and then used the 8 lb weights to do some ST. I live on the top of a hill so it was quite and up and down walk. When I go back to the gym next week I'm going to have to find a treadmill that has a hill walk on it. It gets your heart rate going real fast - even at a walk.

I set down and made a menu for the next week. I am going to test my beloved salmon and shrimp. On Thursday I had lobst... Tue, 28 Jan 2014 20:13:15 EST Saturday http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5605315 I'm starting my vacation today. 10 days of sleeping in as long as the cats will let me, not having to wear my uniform and having the day to do with as I please.

Yesterday it was warm enough that I raked more of the grass that had frozen on the black plastic off. I'm going to move my raised beds over there as soon as they defrost a little more. I put a plastic tarp over one to start trapping the heat. The theory is it will defrost over the course of a few warm days. As long ... Sat, 25 Jan 2014 13:36:38 EST Thursday http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5603167 Down .5 this morning so Rye must be friendly for me. I can also add rice crackers & my homemade hummus to the friendly foods. I had a snack attack and had crackers & hummus before bed.

I didn't go to the gym yesterday. Instead I came home and cooked some of the go to foods for the next weeks. I finally finished up and cleaned up the kitchen around 8 p.m. I made hummus, a spicy vegetarian soup, and a blueberry pear compote. I will go to the gym after work today.

Thu, 23 Jan 2014 09:29:54 EST Wednesday http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5602094 I was down .6 this morning so eating according to TP helped. Today I'm testing Rye. I already know that I'm intolerant to wheat but I haven't tested rye, barley, or oats to find out how gluten intolerant I am. I've just been eating gluten free for the past 6 months. This time I'm going to test them so I know exactly what I can or cannot eat.

I went to the gym yesterday and got reacquainted with the elliptical machine. It definitely uses different muscles than the treadmill. ... Wed, 22 Jan 2014 09:11:48 EST Tuesday http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5601176 I was up .8 after yesterday but I'm not certain it's because of the almond butter. I deviated from the plan and had some rice with my chicken for dinner. I remembered this morning that Lyn Genet said some people are reactive to that combination. So I don't know if it was the combination or the almonds. I'll have to eat friendly foods today and get myself back to a neutral stage. I'll retest those later. I have a whole list of foods that I want to test.

Since yesterday was a h... Sun, 19 Jan 2014 14:03:55 EST Looking Back http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5599010 I just looked back at some of my blogs from Dec. 2007 to today. I can't believe how much weight I have gained since then. I was at 157 then and now I'm 177.

20 pounds gained in 5 years, most of it in the past 3 years - since I broke my ankle in Dec 2010. It took 5 months before I was released to go back to work and the gym. I was still in pain so I went to a physical therapist who told me my arch had fallen! No wonder it hurt to walk. Once I got some arch supports I start... Sun, 19 Jan 2014 13:46:03 EST Getting Back on Track http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5477224 I was back to the gym today after a 6 day break. I have to keep to my schedule if I'm going to do well in the upcoming 5K. 1 more week to train. I'm going to stick to the walk 1 minute/run 1 minute plan. When I run more than 1 minute I get light headed. It's only been 3 week of off and on training so I'm good with running 1 minute at a time. I'll move up slowly to 2 and then 3 minutes at a time.

Thu, 5 Sep 2013 22:20:02 EST Severe Thunder Shower http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5474951 I'm sitting her listening to the crash of thunder & lightening and watching the rain pound my flowers to the ground. We've got a Severe Weather Alert going on along with Flash Flood Warnings! This is the 2nd super thunderstorm we've had in a week. The one last week dropped 9 inches of rain in 2 hours! That's unheard of in Idaho. We've had drought conditions all summer with highs in the 90's most of June, July, and August. This is totally unreal for September.

I am ready for... I thought I did a lot of walking at work but barely got in 2 miles.

I was up .4 pounds this morning which I halfway expected. I splurged yesterday and ate what I wanted for breakfast & lunch. I also didn't get all my water in and was up 1 & 1/2 hours earlier than normal. Sun, 1 Sep 2013 21:13:28 EST Pledge Day http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5471257 I had a great workout this afternoon. I made it to the gym! 104

I walked 2 minutes and ran 1 for 10 reps. I used to think that I ran/jogged pretty slow but now I think I'm doing pretty good. An exercise class was going on while I was running the track and every once in a while they would come out and run a lap or 2 around as part of their routine. I was able to keep up with a lot of them! I was only in the middle of the pack but that's better than being tail end. ... For the 1st time since I got it my Fitbit I had over 14,000 steps!

Today I went lap swimming. I didn't stay as long. Too many people were coming into the sauna & hot tubs and I was their entertainment. It made me self-conscious. Maybe when I can swim more than 5 lengths of the pool without stopping I won't be. I like Fitness, Inc. for it's track and better layout. However, Metro is not as busy and on my cross-training days (Tuesday & Thursday) the swimming pool is Open Swim all day. It is also an adults only gym so there are no little kids in the pool.

I hadn't swam laps for any length of time since I was in my 20's and worked as a lifeguard. I didn't get to the gym although on Days 6 and 7 I did spend a significant amount of time stretching, bending, and sweating as I cleaned house and worked in the garden. Tomorrow starts a new week and I renew my Pledge to go to the gym after work each day. Sun, 18 Aug 2013 21:01:46 EST Pledge Day 4 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5456698 Day 4 and I made it to the gym. I did 30 minutes on the treadmill and another 10 doing floor exercises.

I checked out the other gym that my membership gives me access to. It doesn't have as nice of a cardio area, has no track and generally had no personality. On the upside - on the days I cross-train there is no class in the pool. I'm going to be there on Thursday afternoon to do my lap swims.

Thu, 15 Aug 2013 23:37:37 EST Pledge Day 3 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5455467 I made it to the gym today, but it was a close call. I generally get off at 4 p.m. but today it was 5 o'clock before I left. As I was going to my car there was that internal debate of going to the gym or going straight home since it was so late. I mentally kicked myself and said "Late for what?" I have no one to make dinner for, no one counting on me to do anything or be anywhere. The only thing I need to do is what I had pledged to do - GO TO THE GYM. So I went. I didn't spend the wh... I used Jeff Galloway's 1 minute system to do a 36 minute run/walk. After a 5 minute warm-up you do 28 minutes of run/walk and then a 3 minute cool down walk. I downloaded the music that rings a bell when you change pace. Afterwards I did my stretching/yoga/strength training (floor exercises). I was totally soaked by the time I finished . It wasn't a full hour today, but it was intense. When I got home I worked in the g... I did a 15 minute walk/run, 15 minute stretching/yoga, 15 minutes on the weight machines . and a 15 minute cool down walk. It felt good and I still had energy when I got home.

Tomorrow I'm going to do the Jeff Galloway Walk/Run program. It's about a 30 minute work-out. Mon, 12 Aug 2013 23:39:25 EST My Pledge http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5452127 So I've been in the BLC 22 for 8 weeks and I've lost 1 pound since we started. I've gone up 3 pounds and down 4 pounds and I just5 stay at the same weight. I've been doing the same thing I had before I joined BLC except I quit going to the gym and began counting the gardening as my exercise. Pulling weeds does make me sweat but it's not in the same category as using the strength training machines. As of today I am making a pledge to go the the gym 5 days a week - Monday thru Friday. For my morning snack I had put a slice of chicken lunch meat (deli thin) in a romaine lettuce leaf with 1/6 ounce of cheese. I had 6 of these. When I tested whole wheat bread a month later the intestinal distress was even greater, more immediate, and I gained another 1.5 pounds. I cut breads out of my diet, and decided to try and go wheat free. I continued to test and found that when I ate prepared foods I gained weight or had intestinal distress. I tes... They're not my usual choice for movies but I that's what appealed to me. Amazingly, the cats let me sleep until 7:30 this morning!! After feeding them, I took care of the necessities and went out to work in the garden. Everything was looking good. I harvested 2 radishes, and realized I hadn't planted any cucumbers! Another thing on the shopping list. I managed to clear out the weeds next... Sat, 8 Jun 2013 20:22:30 EST S.M.A.R.T. Goals for BLC 22 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5382724 Sept. 13, 2012 I set my 1st SMART goals. They were quite a bit different than the ones I have here. I'm not in as good shape physically as I was then. The operation on my foot in October 2012 left me with more pain and problems than I had before. I have pain when I flex my foot or go up and down stairs. I am finally getting the tendon stretched out enough to walk comfortably. The back of my foot is partially numb. If I'm tired or hurting my foot seems to flop down rather than have a con... Sat, 8 Jun 2013 19:09:31 EST What a Day! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5375163 Today I planned on picking some goldfish up from a co-worker. Her DH has a huge pond with koi and goldfish. She said they had too many goldfish and invited me to come over and get some. I didn't know what I was in for!

We started out trying to catch the fish with a net and soon realized that the net was too slow and the fish too fast. An hour later we had caught 2 fish and were ready to call it quits. I brought my prizes home to find that the heat of the past 2 days had chan... Sun, 2 Jun 2013 00:08:56 EST Biggest Loser Challenge on Wii Fit http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5372032 My goal for today was to get the Wii Fit out and start using the Wii Fit exercise routine. It is a nice gentle 30 minute yoga based routine, at least the way I had it set up. Things were going fine until the game asked for the disc. It was no where to be found! The last time I had seen it was more than a year ago and it was in the game. No there. Not in any of the other Wii Fit game boxes. I checked everyplace I could think of.

I was determined to get a Wii workout so I pu... Wed, 29 May 2013 23:15:31 EST Don't Know it I'm more Pumped or Pooped http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5367027 I just got back from my advanced weapons training and it was a blast! The 1st 4 hours we did our weapons qualifications. We do this every year and I dread it because I am such a bad shot. This year the range of fire had changed but the biggest change was the sights on the glock. They were huge. It was so easy to sight in that I was able to qualify on the 1st round. I haven't done that for 19 years. Generally it takes me to the 2nd or 3rd round to finally make enough points to qualify... Fri, 24 May 2013 20:17:43 EST Goal Check-In http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5133995 Day 1 of my revised goals, Monday:

Stayed on track with my "To Do" list. Got most of it checked off, including my seated exercise. Would probably have got it all checked off but I had wine with dinner and lost my motivation. I still had some reading and crocheting left. I'll try and do double today.

Made a wonderful Spinach, Cheese, Ham Stuffed Chicken Breast for dinner last night. It was the 1st time I had tried butterflying a chicken breast and stuffing it. Can't... Tue, 13 Nov 2012 12:25:59 EST Revised Goals http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5132033 When I started with SparkCoach, in Sept., I was asked to set goals that were Smart, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely. Things have changed in my life so I need to revise my goals. When I made them I was able-bodied and these were my goals:

GOAL: Work out for 1 hour 5 times each week. Thursday and Sunday are my struggle days so I'll make them my exercise rest days. On Friday & Saturday I'm off work so I'll get up and take a long walk, or if I get up late I'll go to th... Sun, 11 Nov 2012 21:53:53 EST Lost Muscle http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5123449 I weighed myself today and I'm down 4.5 pounds this week. At any other time it would be cause for celebration, but I know that this weight loss is not good. It's muscle loss - not fat. I look at my left calf and the skin just hangs there like a rooster waddle. I've been doing chair exercises but they don't do much good for the legs since I can't put any weight on that foot. 4 more days and then I can start weight bearing. Sun, 4 Nov 2012 10:33:26 EST
