JOANOFARCTIC's SparkPeople Blog JOANOFARCTIC's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Lunchtime Buffalo Wild Wing Adventure Friday a coworker sent an email inviting a group out to lunch for Monday as it was his birthday. His suggested place was Buffalo Wild Wings. I'd never been before so I toddled off to the website to see what kind of food they had, and to see if they had anything that looked like it would fit into my targets. They actually don't have the information on the website but they'll email it to you if you ask.

(As it turns out a pound of deep fried, breaded chicken wings is a particularl... Mon, 26 Nov 2012 16:57:06 EST Hubby tried a new recipe tonight for my birthday Sweet & Sour Pineapple Chicken. Up until now he's only cooked things I've made before, this one was totally new to us. Although he followed the recipe exactly, it needs a bit of tweaking for flavour but health wise it was pretty good:

Including 3/4 cup brown rice, a nice generous portion clocked in at less than 500 calories: 73g carbs, 9g fat & 30g of protein. So the fat and protein are great and the carbs are a bit high but that's the rice. The fibre is a bit low, only 6g. I ... Thu, 22 Nov 2012 20:02:58 EST Tomorrow I'll have been fat for 27 years I mean, technically I suppose I was a normal toddler. But I think I qualified as at least somewhat overweight every year afterwards. So, that's a bit depressing.

I hope this is my year, though. I hope that by my 28th birthday I'm under 200 lbs. It'd be nice to be well under but I want to be somewhat realistic at the same time.

I went to the pool today. I only did 550m because of horrible toe cramps. They seem to be getting worse - even though I had a banana this af... Wed, 21 Nov 2012 23:01:11 EST Mum's birthday cake - picture!

So we had dinner at The Keg... it was DELICIOUS. aaaah! no regrets!

And then we had my cake, which was RIDICULOUSLY chocolatey - three layers of Martha Stewart's Ultimate Chocolate Cake (which was a teeny bit dry imo but that might be from baking it the night before?) filled with dark chocolate ganache and frosted with ombre peach roses in vanilla buttercream.

It was pretty awesome, if I do ... Sat, 17 Nov 2012 23:40:49 EST spark tracking for cake batter licked off spoon? No idea. Calories for the rest of the day were low so I'm not going to worry!

So far the cake looks good - Martha Stewart's Ultimate Chocolate cake. It has a 3/4 of a cup of strong coffee in there (and the batter was delicious!)

I made it in three layers instead of two. I'm going to make a chocolate ganache filling, and I'm going to decorate with buttercream. It's going to be EPIC.

Because birthday cakes should be amazing 211

(I'll ... Fri, 16 Nov 2012 22:10:21 EST ugh, I'm hungry but I don't have anything that will fit in my calories and fill me, so I'm not even going to bother.

Tomorrow is Friday... and I'm getting started on my mom's birthday cake! Thu, 15 Nov 2012 23:26:40 EST Things I will do when I'm thinner # 87: Give myself a pedicure I guess technically I could do that already since I can reach my toes and all that, but it would be really annoying and all that contorting for the necessary time would be really uncomfortable. So currently I just take care of my cuticles and the general health of my feet and otherwise they remain plain toe-nailed, which I'm more concious of now that I'm swimming. I can obviously go and get them painted by someone else, and that's nice and all, but it's quite expensive so that it's not some... Wed, 14 Nov 2012 22:07:21 EST Today was a good day again :) I'm still not fully organized, I ended up having a couple of 100 calorie granola bars for breakfast instead of a real breakfast. But that's better than nothing!

For lunch I had the rest of a potato - onion - egg hash thing that I made on Sunday. Again, more vegetables would have been nice but it needed to be finished anyway. And I ate a cucumber. Yes, a whole cucumber!

When I got home from work I had a big bowl of spinach topped with some canned salmon mixed with lig... Tue, 13 Nov 2012 22:54:23 EST Return of the prodigal daughter... So I fell off the wagon in a BIG BIG way.

With the flu, I couldn't exercise and my eating plan went down the tubes since all I wanted to eat was mashed potatoes. And it was also hallowe'en so I made sure to stuff my face with chocolate and goodies, too. And then I got an infection in my thumb (probably as a result of my immune system taking a beating following the steroids & flu) so once again I couldn't swim or lift weights and truth be told it was constantly throbbing so even w... Mon, 12 Nov 2012 13:28:58 EST Preventing foot cramps while swimming I just looked this up because I had to cut my swim short this evening.

Apparently eating more calcium and potassium and staying hydrated can help. I didn't drink that much water today so that must be the issue :(

So, in future... lots of water + a banana prior to swimming! Wed, 17 Oct 2012 23:01:09 EST I just... can't do mornings Well, it may have been wishful thinking on my part, really, after swimming from 9 to 10pm last night, that I could make the 7am - 8am swim this morning.

I'm disappointed though, because 1) there are only two morning swims a week and now I've missed one 2) we have an engagement tonight that for the most part, precludes swimming this evening... but I'll see if I can swing it anyhow.

I did 1500m last night - that's standard triathlon distance! It took me 55 minutes... my s... Tue, 16 Oct 2012 10:48:51 EST I'm behind... I have a bunch of stuff around the house I need to do and I have no time to do it in. Here's hoping I get some of it done tomorrow...

Laundry, cooking, cleaning... why didn't I do more over the weekend?!

Oh well, we went to the store and I have cucumbers and celery for afternoon snacks (I need volume... a 1/4 cup of almonds leaves me ravenous) so at least I've got that. Mon, 15 Oct 2012 23:47:47 EST Need for achievement I took just one psych class in University - Introduction to Personality. (I had to fight with them to let me skip the pre-requisites)

It was incredibly interesting - mainly because, like most young people in their early 20s, I was very interested in myself ;)

I discovered, in that class, that I have a very high need for achievement. I need to accomplish things. I need to master them, I have high standards. I always excelled academically. In the workplace, I continue... Sun, 14 Oct 2012 13:02:39 EST My friend isn't pregnant anymore She miscarried sometime before her ultrasound yesterday. Her uterus was empty.

She had been experiencing a lot of bleeding and some cramping, and she hadn't started to show yet and so she's been very worried these past few weeks, but a lot of these early miscarriages are inevitable and the doctors can't do much.

The pregnancy wasn't planned, and it was going to throw a wrench into things, but she's not a teenager so it was going to be ok. She was pretty excited. ... Sat, 13 Oct 2012 20:22:16 EST I think I'm going to buy a swim pass Now that it's gotten colder, but mostly because the nights have been closing in, I'm looking into alternatives to my 5k walks with the dog. I'd always meant to buy a swim pass in October, but I've put it off because my nose is still very irritated and I'm not sure how it will react to the chlorine. However, I think it's gotten a bit better lately so I think I'm going to buy a swim pass this weekend.

I went to the community centre to get the schedule & information. This community... Thu, 11 Oct 2012 21:06:32 EST Honey Crisp apples I went apple picking with my dad on Monday and I got 4L of Honey Crisp apples! The farmers around here had a really bad harvest because of the late spring frost we had so it's been hard to find Honey Crisps, but they are SO GOOD.

I think if I ever got a tattoo (and I don't think I ever will, but this is hypothetical) it would be of a Honey Crisp apple. Wed, 10 Oct 2012 22:50:34 EST Thanksgiving Weekend! I have been looking forward to this all week... Long Weekend! Followed by a short work week... woohoo!

We're going to the Norfolk County Fair tomorrow with my sister, I'm going to bring my camera and hopefully get some nice pictures of the Autumn leaves... only problem is it's supposed to rain tomorrow. Well, we'll see what happens :) I'm sure we'll still have fun.

Sunday is the big Turkey dinner at my parents' house, I plan to have whatever I want but not too much of... Sat, 6 Oct 2012 00:00:33 EST Having a pregnant friend... means that at 5:30 pm after dealing with auditors all day (@#$%!!!), she says, "hey we should get nachos"

Sigh. I love nachos... but I've been having a lot of cheats lately! Gotta fix that... and go work out! Right now! Thu, 4 Oct 2012 23:07:52 EST My freezer is full (of chicken) We went back to Fresh Co this evening to see if we could get some more skinless, boneless chicken breasts at $2.97/lb. We picked up four value packs this time instead of two, and so even though I took it all out of the packaging and put them into ziplock bags to save space, our freezer is ridiculously full right now! But with mainly good for you stuff (still the last few pierogies remain...)

Of course price matching takes a bit of time, they have to call the supervisor for meat. ... Wed, 3 Oct 2012 21:33:09 EST It's 11pm, do you know what you're going to have for breakfast? I don't know if it's because I'm a planner or because I'm looking forward to it (lol) but I usually decide the night before what I'm going to do for breakfast the day of.

I mean, it doesn't always work out - last night I decided on a smoothie and this morning I remembered I still had salad dressing in my immersion blender's plastic jar. So I had oatmeal instead.

However, I have a few main breakfasts that I basically just rotate:

- soaked oats, usually with fr... Tue, 2 Oct 2012 22:51:23 EST SMART October Goals SMART stands for "Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Relevant & Time-bound".

Cardio 3x per week
Strength training 3x per week
Stick to eating plan, apart from Thanksgiving*
Require new jeans! Mon, 1 Oct 2012 21:57:11 EST @#$%ing George Foreman grill... About 50% of the time, it destroys my salmon fillets. When I open the grill, half of the fillet is stuck to the top and the other half is stuck to the bottom. I never had this problem with my first GF grill, but I really don't like this one.

I would have done the salmon in the oven but I didn't have enough racks: I already had acorn squash baking and broccoli roasting in there.

So anyway, since the salmon was half flaked up anyway, I added some BBQ sauce and called it ... Sun, 30 Sep 2012 19:19:42 EST Finished watching the 1/2 season finale of Doctor Who oh, it was good! As usual, a few minor plot holes... since we're nerds and we notice these things... but overall, great episode!

I went out for dinner with my mom, my sister and some family friends last night. We went for all you can eat sushi. The place we went to also does chinese take out type items but I stayed away from those and mainly ate sushi - I think I did reasonably well, considering. I just wish I'd had a better week food-wise leading up to it.

We're lea... Sun, 30 Sep 2012 14:47:29 EST Just spoke with the recruiter He thinks the role may be too much of a lateral move for me, although he said he has no doubt I'd be able to perform well. He said he'd let me know if he finds something that would be more of a step up from what I'm currently doing.

I mean, I'm in the best possible position to be considering my options: I'm happy enough where I am to stick around for the time being, and I'm only looking at opportunities that would lead to real career advancement. So I can wait.

And in ... Fri, 28 Sep 2012 14:48:12 EST Sriracha! Fri, 28 Sep 2012 01:05:40 EST Kind of on a whim, but I applied for a job A recruiter contacted me about a job, and I just spent the last three hours updating my resume (it is a thing of beauty, btw) to apply.

I'm not terribly unhappy at my current job, I love my coworkers and I'm still somewhat hopeful that the opportunities for advancement that they've been dangling in front of me for what seems like forever will actually come to fruition... but I figure you don't get anything out of life if you don't go for it.

Since it's through a recruite... Thu, 27 Sep 2012 23:29:28 EST Things are looking up! The melatonin worked reasonably well. I definitely woke up around 5am and couldn't get back to sleep but overall I feel far more rested this morning than I have for weeks. Melatonin > Ativan, for sure.

I'm working from home today, not because I have to but because there's hardly anyone in the office today so I may as well :)

After showering, I walked the dog around the "block" (which I haven't been doing because I haven't been waking up in time, even though it only tak... Tue, 25 Sep 2012 10:47:57 EST Ok, enough of this! I'm going to feel better. It has officially been too long since I felt healthy, and frankly, I've had enough of it.

I had the sinus surgery on September 7. I haven't slept properly since. The benzos leave me feeling groggy and crappy in the morning. I'm going to try melatonin tonight - I really need this to work. Fingers crossed!

I need to get back into the regular swing of things. I need to get my sleep schedule sorted out, my exercise routine back, and I need to get my eating back on track... Mon, 24 Sep 2012 23:16:18 EST Dinner with family We went over to my parent's house for dinner tonight. We always bring the dog when we go because my parents have a lab too, and my sister's cat was there... it was a houseful of animals! My mom asked what we wanted for dinner, my husband wanted ribs. I would have preferred something like roast chicken because I think there are fewer calories, but to be honest I don't think you can really win when it comes to my mom's cooking. She puts butter in everything, even rice.

So I track... Sun, 23 Sep 2012 22:30:06 EST Marshall's & Costco I went shopping with my mother today - at Marshall's I got a top and two cardigans. One of the cardigans is especially nice - it's navy blue, lightweight cableknit cashmere, and it's a bit more casual because it has a hood & a zipper. I'm allergic to wool so I love finding cashmere for good prices. This one is an XL - it will look better as I lose weight but it does fit now.

I am going to need jeans soon, these ones are starting to go at the inside thighs, but I want to stick ... Sat, 22 Sep 2012 18:21:24 EST Work Lunch Out it was someone's last day at work today so we took him out for lunch at Kelsey's (how original, I know... wasn't my choice!)

Kelsey's had a few lower calorie entrees but they were all around the 20 dollar mark... more for dinner than lunch. Instead I went for their soup + salad combo, which was spicy chicken corn chowder & something called a sonoma salad.

Here's what I did to "healthify"
- I got the feta cheese and dressing on the side (I did end up using all the... Thu, 20 Sep 2012 20:21:59 EST (kind of gross... weak stomachs stay out) Both the pharmacy and my doctor neglected to tell me that my new sleeping pill, Ativan, shouldn't be mixed with Tylenol 3s.

This morning was like a scene from exorcist :(

So, I missed work this morning AGAIN, sleeping instead, but I felt well enough to work from home this afternoon. Still, I've made NO headway on my project work that is due on Friday. Tomorrow is going to be a looooong day. I'd do some now but I'm actually quite tired and probably just going to sleep ... Wed, 19 Sep 2012 21:10:38 EST fell off the wagon last night I ate a bunch of random stuff... I was so tired and frustrated with everything, and frankly, hungry too.

Today was ok but I had a bit of a rough night emotionally and I'm going to go to bed soon.

I'm very behind with work now, so that's starting to stress me out. Coming up to a couple long days, it looks like... Tue, 18 Sep 2012 22:42:43 EST Let's try this again... I had to leave work early today again because I was feeling nauseous from lack of sleep. Went to my doctor's office, and he prescribed a benzo this time, which really did help me sleep.

I'm going to take another and go to bed and hopefully sleep until morning, this time. Mon, 17 Sep 2012 21:30:20 EST Last few weeks of sunshine and warmth... I really do love autumn - cooler temperatures, sweaters & scarves, stews, colourful trees, Hallowe'en. It really is a great time of year... and any time the seasons change it's new and exciting.

However, the evenings are really closing in and soon I'll see very little daylight day to day. Sunshine is such a mood booster for me - I wouldn't say that I have seasonal affected disorder but I certainly AM affected by a lack of sunshine. Trust me... I spent 3 years in a place where it... Sun, 16 Sep 2012 19:05:07 EST Stew & Bread... cure for what ails ya

Wow - this stew is good, and I feel MUCH more human after eating it (sleep was not in the cards last night since I've decided to stop taking my sleeping pills to avoid dependency)

It's super easy too, I highly recommend giving it a shot! I posted the recipe here as well as the brown bread (Irish Wheaten Bread) that I made to accompany it.

Stew:

Sat, 15 Sep 2012 19:22:28 EST Sometimes, it's good not to have money because after work today, I REALLY was not in the mood to cook dinner

I actually left work early because I wasn't feeling well at all. Once I got out into the rain I felt a bit better (although the wet seeped in through my shoes... must find better fall shoes somewhere) so I went to No Frills because they were supposed to have Eye of Round for $1.97/lb. It was right there on the top of the front page of the flyer too, so I knew it was their "loss leader". They never get enough o... Fri, 14 Sep 2012 17:42:14 EST Back to work today (sorta!) Well, I worked from home. Which meant I got to have a nap at lunchtime, ha!

Tomorrow I plan to go into the office (it's jeans day, after all). I miss my co-workers, I haven't seen my two best buddies in weeks actually since they were on vacation the week before my surgery. I managed to get a lot done today so I'm happy. I have several hours of project work to get caught up on but I can handle that this weekend.

We watched the latest episode of Doctor Who (the one wit... Thu, 13 Sep 2012 21:13:12 EST Well... that's why we have savings, I guess My husband drove the car down to the pharmacy yesterday to pick up my prescription - and called me about 45 minutes later to tell me the car wouldn't start... perfect. I asked my neighbour for a lift down so that I could see what was going on exactly.

It's a good car, but I've had battery issues lately. Anyway, this didn't sound like normal battery issues - for one thing, the lights and the keyless entry were working, and the start sounded like more of a clickclickclickclick than... Wed, 12 Sep 2012 18:36:56 EST Still foggy I had been planning on returning to work tomorrow but it's becoming clear that that can't happen. I'm quite disappointed about that.

Has anyone ever watched TV all day for days? It kind of makes you lose faith in humanity. But my head is throbbing and reading or browsing the internet for long makes it worse.

My surgeon's office didn't call me back so I only have one more sleeping pill left. If I don't get a hold of him tomorrow I'll ask my GP for a prescription... Mon, 10 Sep 2012 20:40:24 EST I'm sorry that I've gone all negative on you guys I know I've totally turned into that whiney jerk that nobody feels like listening to. I hate that person and these days I've been her.

It is REALLY hard to stay positive right now. I'm miserable. Prednisone is keeping me up at night and my sleeping pills don't knock me out for more than 4 hours at a time. I'm worried I'll get dependent on the sleeping pills (there are two types of pills I avoid at all costs: sleeping & laxative) but I can't sleep at all without them. I have a ... Sun, 9 Sep 2012 16:42:39 EST my skin is all greasy It feels like I've spread vaseline on it

I only just washed my face a couple of hours ago

I looked it up - turns out this is one of the many wonderful side effects of prednisone... doesn't take long for that crap to start messing you up, man.

2 days down... 15 to go? Sat, 8 Sep 2012 22:02:57 EST Feeling... alright actually! I think the anaesthetic has mostly worn off. It hadn't at around 8pm when I tried to make myself a cup of cocoa (hubby doesn't know how) and had to go lie down with a wet washcloth over my head for 30 minutes. But it's just before midnight now and apart from the pain in my nose I'm mostly ok.

I finally read my post operative medical instructions. I'm on 50 mg of Prednisone for the next 5 days... ugh. That stuff is awful. I then gradually taper down over the following 12 days. ... Fri, 7 Sep 2012 23:46:12 EST no food after midnight My husband's been singing the gremlin's theme and now it's stuck in my head... 42

My surgery isn't until 12:25pm tomorrow. I can have clear fluids up until 6:25am (yeah like I'm going to get up that early for a glass of water!)

I am gonna be so hungry 46 I ALWAYS have breakfast! Thu, 6 Sep 2012 18:45:12 EST One more workout before surgery Starting to get nervous that I won't get back on the horse afterwards :(

It's a sinus surgery, and it's the second time I've had it. It's relatively minor, worst part is actually the post surgical drugs. Oh, and the really painful boogers. They kind of suck.

But I know me. I know my laziness has no bounds.

I've got plans to join the pool once I'm recovered. I haven't gone swimming in a long time and I'm looking forward to it, so hopefully that will spur m... Wed, 5 Sep 2012 23:46:59 EST Hardest part of working out? Starting. Convincing yourself to get up off your ass to put your workout clothes on and go work out is 90% of the effort.

I'm starting to realise STARTING to work out may never get easier, but working out is getting easier and I'm enjoying it more. Tue, 4 Sep 2012 22:11:23 EST Confession - my main motivation is vanity I'm quite seriously overweight. I'm 26 years old (for a little while longer, at least) and until recently, I weighed 261 lbs. I'm 5'7, which means my BMI was 41. Well within the "morbidly obese" category. I'm now down to 248.6 or a BMI of 39, so at least I'm out of the 40s, but I've still got a ways to go until I'm under 30 and merely "overweight" instead of "obese". (That happens at 191 lbs, to be exact)

Until this year, apart from the number on the scale (and on the tags of ... Mon, 3 Sep 2012 20:41:51 EST Grocery shopping for the week... a few deals we went grocery shopping for the week today, since tomorrow all the stores are closed. To be honest I didn't want to go anywhere since my face is still glowing like a radiation burn victim (in fact I am a radiation burn victim, it's just solar radiation) and I'm ashamed. I'm also annoyed because I reapplied sunscreen 3 times (applied 4 times total). I'm just ridiculously pale and we were by the lake for 3.5 hours with the sun reflecting onto us while watching the airshow. I should just gi... Sun, 2 Sep 2012 22:55:50 EST If summer's over, you coulda fooled me When I was a kid, the last big thing we did every summer was go to the CNE. It meant school was just around the corner, which we were always excited for because we were strange kids who liked school!

Anyway, I've been to the CNE a few times as an adult and I still enjoy it. One the one hand, some things are a bit samey and I feel like I've seen it before (I have) but in other ways I enjoy it more since I don't have to constantly meet at pre-arranged spots with my parents every fe... Sat, 1 Sep 2012 23:22:02 EST Wow, what a day Today I found out that a very good friend of mine is 6 weeks pregnant. She hasn't told a lot of people because there's still a relatively high risk of miscarriage at this stage of pregnancy. I'm so happy for her and I hope it works out!

And yet, I'm so sad for myself because a time where I could start trying for a family seems so far away, and at the mercy of things mostly out of my control.

We went out for lunch, anyway, to celebrate and talk. I don't go out to eat v... Thu, 30 Aug 2012 19:24:47 EST
