I was listening to my favourite pair of early morning radio guys a few years ago. One of them (Larry) was talking about his recent trip to Ireland. Somebody asked if he went to the Blarney Stone and kissed it.

"Oh, yes I saw it" Larry said, "but it was so crowded and everyone was kissing it, so I didn't."

"Afterwards we went to a nearby pub, and I was talking to an old guy who lived in the village."

'"Did you kiss the Blarney Stone lad?" he asked me. I to... Tue, 17 Mar 2015 19:09:27 EST Adorable Sharks! These guys were my favourite part of the Superbowl.

They not only danced with Katy Perry, they lip-synced with her too (not that they have lips).

I want a shark costume just like this! Mon, 2 Feb 2015 13:41:57 EST Lunch Walk Thought I'd give you a look at the downtown Vancouver seawall where I walk at lunch whenever I can.

Here's the seawall with the wharf walk, which is a wharf with 2 ramps - you walk out, then walk along the wharf and then walk back up the other ramp. Lots of fun as the wharf is always bouncing in the waves.

Here's the fog rolling in. That's Stanley Park in the background

<img src="http... I had to poke him twice this morning, because I couldn't do the inject part when he was struggling. The poking doesn't seem to bug him that much, but he usually squeaks when I inject him, then I feel nasty.

I don't think he is drinking as much now though, and I haven't found any of his "biblical floods" in the cat box. However, he is still having trouble with his back legs.... Sun, 11 May 2014 11:24:51 EST My Diabetic Cat part 1 One of my cats, Mac, had something wrong with his back legs recently. I was hoping it didn't have anything to do with the raccoon bite at the base of his tail he got last fall. He didn't seem to be in pain, but it's got to the point that he had trouble climbing into the litter box, so I made an apt for him at the vet.

I was surprised that the vet didn't think there was anything wrong with his legs. She thought that it was a muscle weakness that was the problem. After hearing how... Fri, 9 May 2014 21:26:57 EST 4 Fitness Tests Completed I did my fitness test for BLC25 this morning.

pushup test: 14 - average
crunch test: 26 - good to excellent
3 minute step test: pulse 82 - excellent
1 mile walk test: 16 min - average

I wasn't surprised by the step test. I know my pulse is slower than most people's because of the blood pressure meds I take - at least that's what my doctor told me. I know the nurses often comment how slow my pulse is when I give blood. I also do the 6 flights of stairs ... Sun, 4 May 2014 21:29:41 EST BLC25 Goals My #1 goal for BLC25 is simple - to weigh less in 12 weeks than I do now!

Other goals:

1. ST at least twice a week.
2. Run at least twice a week.
3. Bike ride at least once a week.
4. Eat freggies & protein with every meal.
5. Eat fewer calories on the weekend.

If I stick with these 5 goals I should have no problem with my #1 goal! Fri, 2 May 2014 14:53:29 EST Summer Kamp My Hogwarts team wants to know all about my ideal summer camp.

I think it would be in a temperate region of the world, but the summer would be nice and hot. It would be isolated and private, but with accommodation for selected friends! It would be so far in the bush that no sounds of human activity would intrude.

We would be tenting, but the tent would look like this:

Of course someone else w... Fri, 25 Apr 2014 22:15:39 EST Lament for Azaleas On Saturday I walked down to my favourite produce store instead of taking the bus. I decided to walk past a house with the most beautiful azalea garden I've ever seen. I didn't think all the azaleas would be out yet, but I thought some of them might be.

Well the house was gone and the beautiful garden was a mud pit. A new house was under construction.

I've made a conscious effort the last few years to try to embrace change rather than being negative and bitter abo... I bought it last year and did not ride it a whole lot but I did use it.

First thing I need to do is ride it to the dealers and get the handlebars straightened out again. For some reason they moved just off centre, which is enough to throw off my steering just a little and probably was the reason I lost my balance and fell over once (onto the grass, fortunately). I can't adjust the d*amn things at all - they are too tight! I need someone with the ... Fri, 21 Mar 2014 12:01:20 EST First day of spring ... wait - I thought that was March 21? Long Days! So I'm supposed to write a blog about something I am looking forward to. At first I drew a blank. I'm don't have any vacations planned and I don't have anything I'm waiting for that I ordered online which are two of the main things I look forward to.

Then I thought that I'm kind of looking forward to running in the woods again, which I can't do until it gets light earlier in the morning, then I thought of course! I'm looking forward to spring and summer! Specifically the loooon... Tue, 18 Mar 2014 13:43:57 EST Spring, Spring, Spring! Yesterday was the first warm(er) and sunny day this year. All the birds were singing their spring songs and the woodpeckers were drumming away (part of their spring song). Everywhere I went I heard Northern Flickers calling and drumming - I didn't know there were so many around!

The camellias, and flowering cherries were opening up everywhere and the crocuses were so happy to see the sun! Mon, 17 Feb 2014 11:41:54 EST Weekend Cooking I was inspired to write a blog when I thought about all the food I was going to cook this weekend. I have a couple of new snacks I am taking to work and I also cook a huge batch of something to eat all week for dinner.

I need to get my snacks and lunch all ready to go (prepped and in containers) on the weekend, because I know from experience I will just not get it done if I leave it to the night before. Sporadically throughout my SP journey and now, every day for the last month or so, I no longer eat breakfast. I didn’t want to admit it, especially to my BLC team (Warriors!) because I thought I’d get tsk, tsk and finger shaking. “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day!” “People who are the most successful at losing weight always eat breakfast!” “Your body needs to fuel up first thing!” “If you don’t eat breakfast you’ll be so hungry you go over your calorie quot... Tue, 24 Sep 2013 11:25:34 EST Reflections on BLC22 So how did I do in BLC22? Not so great weight-wise, but not bad in other things.

What I did right was I got out there running more often. I have to get up at 4am to run before work (I start at 7am) but I managed to do it at least twice a week, usually 3 times. I also took my new bike out at least once a week.

The major mistake I made was eating too much while I was on vacation. The vacation was disappointing in some ways, and I let myself order whatever I wanted when... Fri, 23 Aug 2013 15:22:23 EST Gratitude Day 8 I am thankful for the chance to get to know my nephew better - he has moved in with my Dad and myself while he looks for a job (he just graduated with a BA in microbiology). One of the the things I've learned about him is he loves to cook and he uses practically every dish house while doing so! 246 Thu, 13 Jun 2013 10:36:38 EST Gratitude Day 7 I'm very thankful that I've been able to spend the last few years getting closer to my Dad. We've not always had the best of relationships, but we get along quite well these days (which is good because we live in the same house)! I think he has mellowed quite a bit, but I have changed too. He is 84, and has diabetes, but he is quite capable of taking care of himself still. I'm very thankful for that as well! Wed, 12 Jun 2013 10:37:11 EST Gratitude Day 6 I'm very thankful for my furry buddies Izzy (black), Mac (orange) & Tris (white)

They are all rescue cats, Mac from the SPCA and Tris & Iz from VOKRA (Vancouver Orphan Kittens Rescue Assoc). I'm also grateful I have the space and the money to take these guys in and give them a great life! Tue, 11 Jun 2013 10:41:39 EST My goals for BLC22 I've made myself a bit of a problem lately by setting my goals a little too high. When I realize I'm not going to reach them I tend to throw in the towel completely, so I'm starting out at least with smaller steps:

1. Lose 5 lbs

2. Exercise at least 5x per week - 3 cardio and 2 ST

3. Climb the stairs at work to my floor (6th) at least 2x per day.

4. Include protein and freggies with every meal. Mon, 10 Jun 2013 15:15:15 EST Gratitude Day 5 I'm very, very grateful I am healthy! Despite all the nasty things I have done to my body over the years, it has come through in relatively good shape. I have high blood pressure, but that is doing pretty well these days. I've never broken anything or spent any time in the hospital. One of my biggest long-term goals is a healthy, completely mobile old age, and so far it's looking good! Sat, 8 Jun 2013 23:39:25 EST Gratitude Day 4 I'm very grateful I live in such a beautiful city and just a couple of blocks from one of the biggest urban parks in the world! Fri, 7 Jun 2013 19:37:35 EST Gratitude Day 3 1. I'm grateful I'm employed and have a good job that pays not bad. It won't make me rich, but I'm not hurting.

2. I'm very grateful for my immediate co-workers, who are always cheerful, helpful and completely sane! 246 I can't say that for everyone in the 800 person office I work in, but the people I work the closest with are wonderful. Thu, 6 Jun 2013 09:59:32 EST Gratitude Day 2 1. I am very thankful I live in a city with no tornadoes or hurricanes (yet). Though we did experience the tail end of Hurricane/Typhoon Freda in 1967.

2. I am thankful I have a beautiful big house to live in! I was reading the latest Macleans (Canadian news magazine) that had pictures of where poor people in Hong Kong live. Whole families live in spaces the size of a large closet. Made me very thankful indeed.
Wed, 5 Jun 2013 17:01:53 EST The gratitude experiment day 1 I have been reading articles on SP about the power of optimism and giving thanks for the good things in your life. I am going to start making a short blog entry each day for the things I sometimes take for granted.

Today's entry:
1. The beautiful weather.
2. The opportunity to participate in BLC22 and
3. The support of my Warrior team mates! Tue, 4 Jun 2013 11:26:03 EST Stairs on my mind Lately I've been getting into stairs.

I climb the 6 flights to my floor every workday morning.

I make it a point to get off the elevator one floor early and walk up to my floor the rest of the day. I also sneak in as many extra flights as possible during the day.

If it's raining out, I walk the mall next door to my building at lunch, walking up and down all the access stairs and escalators I can find.

On the weekend, I look for hills and stairs i... Mon, 11 Mar 2013 11:25:30 EST Clothes: driving me Psycho! Buying clothes drove me psycho even before I started losing weight, and now it's even worse.

I have to admit that the weight coming off has made me more interested in clothing, but since I am still losing, I don't want to buy anything too expensive. I've been haunting the thrift stores, but it's just not cutting it for pants. I found two pairs last weekend, but my new jeans are cut low in the hips, which might be the current fashion, but it drives me psycho! They show my underwe... Sun, 3 Mar 2013 19:44:04 EST My Dream Trip up the Amazon River I've never been to the Amazon River, but it holds a special place in my dreams. It has always seemed like the most exotic place on the planet to me.

I would love to rent a luxury yacht and travel upriver as far as we could go. We would have no schedule - it could be 2 months or 2 years (money, of course, would be no object either).

There would be a crew aboard who would take care of all the boat stuff, as well as all the housekeeping! And we would have a gourmet chef ... Sun, 24 Feb 2013 11:05:48 EST Walking the Dog

For the last two weeks I have been taking care of my sister's dog while she and her husband are in Mexico. It's been a change in my routine for sure, as my main fitness activity is running and Ned does not run. I have only run a couple of times since I started dogsitting, but I managed to get some exercise while walking him.

Ned likes to amble along and stop frequently to sniff, sniff, sniff. I don't ... Sun, 3 Feb 2013 19:51:42 EST
