I have been doctoring a shoulder injury for 3 months now. I still can't raise my arm straight up but I am making progress. After 2 months of no exercise, they started a walking competition at work where we track and log our steps. That's all it took to get me up and moving again. After all, walking doesn't require a strong shoulder. My goal is to get into the top 20 and so far I am 37th out of 168 co-workers so I am makin... Wed, 4 Sep 2013 06:35:09 EST Turning 60 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5450580 I haven't blogged in a while but this morning I am thinking about where I am in my fitness life as I turn 60 on Monday. First, the saying "I wish I knew then what I know now" is so appropriate foe me. I found Sparkpeople 3 years ago and have learned so much about healthy cooking, balanced diet and fitness. If I had learned this when I was younger I would not have gained the weight in the first place. Today I feel more fit then I have been in DECADES.

Fitness becomes a habit with t... Sat, 10 Aug 2013 07:31:41 EST Serratus Anterior http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5411238 This is a muscle that holds the shoulder blade in place when reaching or performing exercises such as push ups or lateral flies. It receives stimulation from the long thoracic nerve which tells it when to contract. If the nerve is injured, the shoulder blade will protrude outward from your back because the muscle is weak.

I was told that it takes 6 weeks to 3 months for this to heal. Therapy includes steroid drugs and isometric exercises to strengthen the muscle. It will be a l... Fri, 5 Jul 2013 07:40:43 EST Isometric Exercises http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5410329 I am doing som very targeted exercises to strengthen the serratus anterior muscle in my shoulder. Until now, I never gave much thought about how you can target one specific muscle with exercise. It's amazing all the different ways I can move or put pressure on a particular muscle. I have a much greater respect for Physical Therapists now who have learned how to isolate a muscle and give you exercises to strengthen it.

Our bodies are amazing and intricate. The repetitive motion and over extension has caused an inflamation in this nerve which tells the muscle just under the shoulder blade when to contract. When it is not working, you develop weakness and reduced range of motion. Right now I can't do simple things like put dishes in an overhead cupboard, adjust the rear view mirror in my car or vacuum with my right arm.

Treatment is steroids, reduced phys... To help attendees understand how many times a day they think or speak negative thoughts, we ask them to wear a rubber band around their wrist and to snap it each time they think or say something negative. Thu, 27 Jun 2013 06:59:25 EST Exercising with an Injury http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5402065 I am still struggling with a shoulder injury and can't wait for my Dr. appointment to find out exactly what I have done. However, as time passes waiting for my appointment, I am getting restless from not exercising.

Yesterday I talked to my trainer and he said I should continue to do exercises to keep my legs and core in shape. Mon, 24 Jun 2013 07:00:24 EST Sidelined by Pain http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5388716 This is no fun. Shoulder and arm pain has kept me from exercising for the 3rd day. The bad part is this is the 3rd time in 6 months this has happened so I suspect I have a pinched nerve in my neck. But with the help of a New Health Chiropractor and Advil, the pain has subsided more quickly than the last time. This morning I will attempt some light stretching and a bit of core and lower body exercise because I feel like I need to do some exercises.

It's no fun to be sidelined by... Thu, 6 Jun 2013 07:21:56 EST Cucumbers http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5378708 I learned something new in Trivia this morning. Cucumbers are 90% water and only 7 calories per serving yet they have great nutritional value. So if you like cucumbers, add them to your lunch or dinner salads. I like to add them when making guacamole to slim it down and you would never even know it's in there. I also like to dip them in your favorite dressing as a snack. But wash them well or choose organic. Cucumbers are a great summer time veggie. That was 3 days ago so I must have had a good workout. But it's a challenge to make myself keep going back when I hurt so bad after one of these lunch hour workouts. I always thought your upper leg needs to be parallel with the floor. But his instructions say you have to go beyond that point.
