The first words I heard were "Damn it..." and as I started thinking "sigh, another grumpy man" he finished with ..."you're walking faster than I'm running." I was the only other person there at that moment, so as this very fit, 40-something year old guy ran past me with a thumbs up, I laughed out loud and replied "No I'm not, ... Sat, 15 Jun 2013 13:54:08 EST Signs of spring here in Madison, Wisconsin http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5306364 I have to begin by saying I don't hate winter. In fact, I prefer winter to summer, so I have not been desperately waiting for spring. That doesn't mean I don't love the change of seasons, and all the signs we have, if we are paying attention, that the seasons are doing their thing.
So - last week and this, on what I optimistically call a run, I heard and saw sandhill cranes. That was my first sign.
Again last week, I purposely walked by a certain yard - and there they were - snowdr... Sun, 31 Mar 2013 14:21:24 EST Advantages and disadvantages of walking one's errands http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4801323 I just made a lovely little trip to my neighborhood shopping area. In about 40 minutes I was able to get in 30 minutes of walking, drop off a library book, pick up some wine, order flowers for a friend, and buy stamps. The bonus was I ran into a neighbor heading in the same direction for a baby present, so we walked together and had a nice chat. That wouldn't have happened if we'd each driven.
The downside is that I suppose if I had been in a car I would not also have stopped at the cof... Fri, 23 Mar 2012 12:18:19 EST Teachers http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4596377 On Monday evening my favorite high school teacher was hit by a car, and died. Now I haven't been in high school for 40 years, but I still feel like I lost my second mom. Sr. Virginia was the kind of teacher who expected you to do your best simply because that's what people should do. She had a dry sense of humor, sometimes a little cutting, but a heart of gold. For the past 40 years I received a birthday card from her without fail. I could go on, but I have to get out of my jammies and go to ... Wed, 23 Nov 2011 07:18:02 EST Motivation for Motivate http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4591627 My health was my first motivation to lose weight. I had kept my cholesterol and blood pressure in check for years in spite of overeating because of all the walking I do. But age caught up with me. Once I started losing weight I would have to say that success and feeling better about myself are great motivators. I'm still trying to find motivation to get rid of this last 15 pounds. Seems to have been pretty elusive these past several years. Sat, 19 Nov 2011 19:04:06 EST Why I hate to track my food http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4439542 I'm going to try very hard to make myself track my food this week. I am just like a stubborn little kid when it comes to that. I'm happy to track my exercise because it feels like a positive thing. Tracking my food makes me critical of myself because even though I eat well, I eat too much. I just realized that is the reason I hate to track. Hmm.. Sun, 21 Aug 2011 09:01:22 EST Retirement! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4275698 Today was my last day at work. I'm retired! I have been showered with lunches, gifts, hugs, a party - lots of love these past two weeks. The very same folks who have been called "thugs" and worse by some elected officials are in fact, the kindest, hardest working people in this state, and I'm proud to have worked with them.
This weekend my older son and his wife come to town for a wedding, and then two days after they leave, we follow them out to San Diego for the ceremonies surrounding... Fri, 3 Jun 2011 21:44:03 EST FEF week 9 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4249392 We are going to San Diego in early June to celebrate my older son's attainment of his doctorate. We tend to eat lots of fruits and veggies and fish when we are there, and I imagine it will be the same this time. They have a nice farmers market we usually attend. We are staying in a place with a kitchen, so we will definitely do some of our own cooking. And it's in a neighborhood, so I will get out for a walk or run in the mornings before the guys get up. Sun, 22 May 2011 19:35:57 EST Wave runners music survey http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4246920 This for me is the hardest challenge, because I crave more quiet in my life, not more noise. I don't drive to or from work, so no music needed there. I don't listen to anything but the birds when I run, and I almost never turn on any music when I'm home. Again, there are birds chirping along with a DH who talks to no one else...and talks a lot, so this is going to be a very limited, probably not very accurate list.

HAPPY DANCE Songs: List at least five songs that you c... Sat, 21 May 2011 10:19:16 EST Lots to celebrate http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4244741 We are a fortunate little family indeed. This weekend my younger son turns 30 and we'll attend a party for him at the home he shares with his sweetie. My DH and I celebrate our 35th anniversary, and we got the news last evening that our older son defended his dissertation successfully and now has his PhD.
I have much for which I am grateful!

19 Fri, 20 May 2011 06:33:45 EST Recipes for FEF http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4240276
http://www.mariquita.com/recipes/beets.htm
l

http://www.taunton.com/finecooking/thanksg
iving/fb00209_rec02.asp

www.taunton.com/finecooking/thanksgi
ving/fbn110.asp

www.taunton.com/finecooking/thanksgi
ving/fb00045_rec06.asp

www.nytimes.com/2011/01/19/dining/19
mini.html?_r=1

Gingered Sweet Potato Soup ... Wed, 18 May 2011 06:35:22 EST another team challenge http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4216469 I'm really not much into blogging. I don't find it motivating, and I rarely read other blogs. So this is for the team, not really for me. My two main reasons for trying to get healthier were a higher than I liked cholesterol test result and my older son's wedding. I needed, and still need, to focus on food, as I already bike or walk to work and get other exercise as well. Sat, 7 May 2011 13:42:51 EST "Spring" activity http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4185597 So the challenge for one team I'm on was to choose a spring activity to do this past week. No offense intended, but I'm afraid whoever had this idea does not live in Wisconsin, or the upper Midwest. We had snow this past week...
I did ride my bike to work a few days, although it's not a lot of fun when it's 30 degrees and the winds are 18 mph. Mostly I stuck with my walking routine.
Maybe next week we'll see Spring? It had to be something lively and engaging, so I thought I'd try a new one, a dance DVD with Patricia Moreno.
I spent 25 minutes trying to follow what she and the very YOUNG people with her were doing, but there was little repetition of the moves, and I simply was not getting it. I finally popped her out of the player and slid in something with moves I knew, songs I could sing along... And halleluia, he emailed this morning to say he's been offered a position at Wright State University in Ohio. He's been in San Diego since 2002, working on his doctorate in anthropology. I am extremely happy he's found employment, and that he and his wife will be so much closer to us!!!! Wed, 16 Mar 2011 12:43:54 EST I am retiring http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4094223 I finally decided on my walk home from work tonight that I am happy enough about this decision to share it - my DH and I are retiring, effective June 24. It's taken some time to get excited, really, as we feel like retiring is something we are being forced to do very soon, rather than in a year or two as we had planned. As state employees in Wisconsin, we just don't know what our governor will do next, and in particular once the fiscal year ends. I'm doing my very best to keep this positive, ... Tue, 15 Mar 2011 18:48:50 EST My winter walk to work http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4000286 I leave the house at 6:15, and it's dark, but not unpleasant. I'm wearing two of everything, as the temperature is 10 degrees, with a 10 mph wind out of the west. By the time I reach the zoo, I'm getting warm, and wondering what I can remove. It's quiet, not much traffic yet. Sidewalks are not too bad. By the time I reach the hospital, I hear the first cardinal. What a welcome sound, song, and sign on a February morning. As I turn the corner by the hospital, there is a peach line of dawn over... Tue, 8 Feb 2011 08:40:16 EST new exercises for the Spark people listing http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3995122 Like many across the US, we've gotten a lot of snow here in Wisconsin this winter. I know snow shoveling is on the cardio list, but how about ice chopping? Those of you who park outside might like an entry for car-clearing. And then there's the one I like to think I invented this morning, but I'm guessing lots of you have done it too.
The snow piles next to the driveway are almost my height. So my new "move" is as follows:
Hard shovel push
deep squat
lift up with shovel fu... Sun, 6 Feb 2011 13:06:54 EST Motivation 2 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3624458 I stay motivated not only by others' successes, but by their struggles too. I find support in giving support to others. This works in all aspects of life. A balance between "giving" and "getting", for lack of better terms, keeps us healthy and happy.
Fri, 10 Sep 2010 08:48:39 EST Motivation http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=3618831 I was motivated to join Spark People because I didn't want to be the fat mother of the groom at my son's wedding. I lost some weight for his wedding, and just the fact that for the first time in years I succeeded in losing a little kept me going . I know that if I stick to the program I will lose weight. I'm just not so good at sticking to the program. Good challenges are helpful, along with knowing what works for other people.
