We participated in - and finished! - the Tough Mudder, Topeka!

This is us BEFORE the Tough Mudder. Jordan wore a kilt with his family clan's traditional colors. (Don't worry, he had compression shorts on underneath!) lol. And I'm the only girl in the group, in the blue shorts.

<img src=" Wed, 25 Sep 2013 16:36:59 EST Toe Update, part II Yesterday, I went to the doctor and had my toenail removed. The local block was the worst part - that stings! But the removal went fine and it was over before I knew it. I was feeling pretty good and thought that my problems were solved!

Until the local started to wear off. Now it's in pain, but a different kind of pain than before. But I'm back to work today, where I have to wear closed toed shoes, so we'll see how much pain I'm in by the end of the day!

The doctor also... Wed, 4 Sep 2013 07:48:02 EST Toe Update Well, I finished the first round of antibiotics, and my toe was slightly better but not 100% healed. So I went in for a recheck on Tuesday, and the doctor gave me another 10 days of antibiotics, and scheduled me to remove the toenail.

So on Tuesday, Sept 3 I will go in for the "procedure" and to be honest, I'm freaked out and think I might faint. But they say they do it all the time and it's no big deal. They just numb the toe and all I should feel is pressure... Still oogs me out.... Thu, 29 Aug 2013 07:54:59 EST Sore Big Toe I've had a sore big toe on my left foot off and on since April. I did the Hard Charge, which was an obstacle course through the mud, etc. I noticed a week later that my toe hurt and assumed I stubbed it during one of the many obstacles.

I kept forgetting about it because it didn't hurt all the time, only when I kicked a chair or a dog stepped on my foot at work, etc. Then in June, I started noticing that I hadn't cut that toe's nail for a while.

In July, Jordan told me I... Thu, 15 Aug 2013 17:08:56 EST Trading a FM for an Ultra Well, it looks like I won't be able to do the Prairie Fire Marathon this year. It is October 13th, which is the 2nd Sunday of the month. Jordan and I have obligations at church on the 2nd Sunday, and I haven't been able to find a sub. The people who normally sub for us said no, so now I'm kinda stuck. At least I haven't signed up yet...

I was looking around to see if there are any other marathons near Wichita between October and November. It's slim-pickings, and I have to keep in m... Sun, 11 Aug 2013 15:23:53 EST Bad Running Week I just realized how long it's been since I've blogged... almost a month! Sorry!

This week has been a bad running week. I missed 2 runs this week, short-changed another 2 runs, and my long run tomorrow will probably get cut back due to participating in a Summer Slim-down Challenge to help out my mom's team.

But I'm not going to beat myself up over it. Each day is a new day, each week a new week. I know a lot of you serious runners out there may disagree with what I'm goin... Fri, 9 Aug 2013 18:29:14 EST A great week! It's been busy, but this week had been a great week!

Yesterday was Jordan and my 4th anniversary! We played glow-in-the-dark mini golf (indoors) and then ate pizza at Il Vicino. Ok, we splurged and had cannoli's for dessert.

Also, we paid off Jordan's car loan this week! That's 33 weeks early! We got a sizable insurance check for the hail damage on his car, and instead of fixing it, we decided to use that to pay down the loan, which left only $46.08 that we owed. It's su... Fri, 19 Jul 2013 18:07:53 EST Tough Mudder!! Jordan and I are officially signed up for the Tough Mudder near Topeka on Sept 21st! Woohoo! Super excited. We're doing it with a group of friends and I think it'll be great.

Here's my problem... This might sound crazy, but on the weekend of the Tough Mudder, my marathon training plan has me running 20 miles. So, believe it or not, the Tough Mudder is too short! They typically range somewhere between 10-12 miles. But I'm thinking it will be grueling enough to make up for it. What ... Sat, 13 Jul 2013 08:13:29 EST Yesterday's long run Yesterday, my FM training plan had a 9 mile run scheduled. This was my first run over 5 miles since the Spring HM in April 2012...

But hey, it went pretty well! I ran indoors because it was sprinkling, and while I don't mind a light rain, I DO mind the humidity!

I ran the first hour at a 4:1 interval. Proud of myself for keeping it up so long! The last 30 minutes were tough because I was tired and, like I said, I hadn't done that long of a run in over a year...
<BR... Sun, 7 Jul 2013 08:51:58 EST Had a good run today! This morning, my marathon training plan had me running 5 miles. I got new running shoes this week and wanted to start breaking them in.

The shoes felt great! Also, I didn't have any knee pain. I did have a little pain in my left ankle (not shoe related, but joint related). I've been better about taking my glucosamine supplement regularly so I think that's really helping my joints.

I did the first 3 miles at a 4:1 ratio, and then 3:1 ratio for the last 2 miles. I finished... Sat, 29 Jun 2013 13:08:38 EST I've decided - I'm doing a Marathon! After playing around with the idea for some time, I've finally decided that I AM going to do a marathon! I've done 2 halves as well as a 50k, which is further than a marathon, so I already know I can do the distance.

The Prairie Fire FM is October 13, just over 16 weeks away. I know that's a little short for marathon training, but I can't go back in time, only forward. So here we go!

I picked out a Hal Higdon plan for novices that entails 4 days of running and 1 day of c... Wed, 19 Jun 2013 16:41:41 EST Mexico Mission Trip I've been gone for the last week or so to participate in my 5th short term mission trip with Amor Ministries. We built a house over the course of 3 days for a family in need in Puerto Penaso, Mexico. It's a long drive (2 13-hour days both ways) so needless to say, I did poorly with my steps on those days. On construction days, we did a lot of manual labor, but still not too many steps. Other than the construction and some light walking, I haven't done much exercise for the past week! Also, I'... Sat, 15 Jun 2013 11:59:30 EST I'm Back!/River Run 10K Race Report! Hi everyone! Thanks for your encouraging words and continuing support. I'm back after about a week-long break from Sparkpeople. I feel really refreshed. I practiced going easier on myself this week and celebrating the little things instead of focusing on the "failures."

Today was a beautiful day for a race! I signed up for the River Run 10K without having really trained for it. But if you know me, I just kinda think that if I can't run it, then I'm at least in good enough condition... Sat, 1 Jun 2013 13:31:30 EST Hiatus I need a break from life. lol, ok so that's a little dramatic. But work is just crazy right now and I'm feeling so drained. I just want to relax and read my books. I'm an introvert by nature and I need some major recharge time.

Also, recently I have stopped tracking most of my daily goals. As some of you know, I have a LOT of goals, but what you may not know is that part of me finds my worth in meeting those goals. In other words, if I don't meet a goal, I feel like a total failure... Fri, 24 May 2013 21:11:43 EST Challenge, Day 6-7 Ok, so honestly my challenge kind of fizzled. I didn't meet any of my goals except for flights of stairs on these 2 days. Sundays and Mondays are always the hardest for me, as I don't always exercise on those days.

But yesterday was a good day! I went to the Y at 8 pm after dinner instead of sitting on the couch all evening. Jordan had already worked out earlier that day, so I went by myself even though I didn't want to. When I got home, we went for a walk around the block because ... Wed, 22 May 2013 08:34:13 EST Challenge, Day 5 I met all of my goals yesterday, including 47 VAMs, to help make up for those days with little or no VAM.

I had a fun day, with a race in the morning, time to relax and get things done at home in the afternoon, and then RibFest and the new Star Trek movie with the family in the evening.

I slept really well last night. I guess it was supposed to storm, but honestly I didn't notice if we got any kind of bad weather. I was zonked!

Have a good rest of the weekend! Sun, 19 May 2013 08:32:25 EST East vs West 5K Report I ran a 5K with my sister this morning. She lives in LA and I don't get to see her often, so it was nice to run together. I was trying to break 30 minutes for my 5K, and at this same race last year, I set a PR of 30:12.

Unfortunately, it was very humid today, and my asthma is worst in humidity. I wasn't able to break 30. My time was 31:43 by my watch. Not my fastest 5K, but not my slowest either. Oh well, there's still plenty of 5Ks left this year in which I can break 30 minutes!! Sat, 18 May 2013 10:44:54 EST Challenge, Day 4 Yesterday, I met all of my goals except for VAM again! Grrr! I NEED to figure out how to get those minutes on non-running days!!!

I have a 5K race today, that I'm running with my sister! This will be the first race we've ever done together! I'm hoping to break 30 minutes, so wish me well! I'll update later.

Have a great weekend! Sat, 18 May 2013 07:23:13 EST Challenge, Day 3 I met all of my goals yesterday, including the "very active minutes" (or VAM for short). I ran on the treadmill, and yesterday's VAM was 38, which beat my goal of 30. Yippy! Today is a non-running day, so it will be hard to get those 30 minutes again. Fri, 17 May 2013 07:55:03 EST Challenge, Day 2 Yesterday I met all of my challenge goals except for "very active minutes." I find that if it's a non-running day, I don't get many "very active minutes" in, if any. Does FitBit expect you to run every day!? I wonder if there is a certain number of steps per minute that qualify as "very active"... hmm, I'll look into this.

Today should be no problem, as it's a running day. Thu, 16 May 2013 07:47:10 EST Challenge, Day 1 Yesterday was day 1 of my mini FitBit challenge. I'm happy to say I met all of my goals! I even ran a treadmill 5K in 29:31!!! I am hoping to break 30 minutes at my race on Saturday. 244 Wed, 15 May 2013 08:02:57 EST Challenging myself For those of you on FitBit, have you tried the new dashboard yet? I really like it! I think it displays your daily progress nicely.

I've been slacking off lately and not reaching my daily goals on FitBit, so I'm going to use the new dashboard as an excuse to get back on track!

I am challenging myself to meet all of my daily goals for the next 7 days. That includes: take 10,500 steps, travel 5 miles, burn 2,500 calories, have 30 "very active" minutes, and climb 15 floors... Tue, 14 May 2013 19:32:17 EST Plan for today I work this weekend, but that doesn't mean that I can't exercise!

Plan for today:
1. 2 CrossFit workouts
2. Run 5K
3. Do 25 flights of stairs
4. 22,000 steps
5. BlackJack workout tonight at home
6. 4 servings freggies
7. Finish reading at least 1 books! (I am currently reading 6 books and it's getting to be too much, as much as I hate to admit it!)

I hope you all have a great weekend!

Edit: Here's the workout I did toda... Sat, 11 May 2013 08:12:02 EST Feeling better about myself Yesterday, I blogged about my plan of attack to help me stay on track. I'm happy to say I completed everything on my list!

I don't know what I was thinking with 11,000 steps... if I was going to run a 5K, I should have set my goal higher, because I ended the day with almost 19,000 steps! I also went above and beyond and did 25 flights of stairs (which is a badge on FitBit!)

For my 5K training run, I did it on the treadmill. I did 4:1 ratios instead of my usual 3:1. I br... Wed, 8 May 2013 08:51:40 EST Today's plan of attack Thank you all for the birthday wishes yesterday! I had a great birthday. Well, really, Jordan and I have been celebrating since Friday! We went out to eat, eat, and eat some more! And my weight shows it. Now it's time to get back on track and start eating better.

I weighed in at 147.1 this morning, yikes! That's up about 3 pounds from where I usually hang out.

So here's today's plan of attack.
1. Get in 500 steps before I leave for work. Doesn't sound like much, bu... Tue, 7 May 2013 07:50:05 EST April Review Spiritual:
Do QT daily 5x/week, moving up to 7x (17/30)
Keep a prayer journal (17/30)
Memorize 1 scripture/week (4/5)

Healthy Eating:
Write out dinner meal plans weekly (4/4)
Eat 3 F&V/day, moving up to 5 (22/30)
Take multi-vitamin 5x/week, moving up to 7x (30/30)
Have pop 1x/month (3/30)

Healthy Living:
Marathon? Ultra? Bike Race? (Hard Charge 4 mile Obstacle Course)
Tough Mudder (none yet)
Take 10k steps/day ... Wed, 1 May 2013 20:02:08 EST Hard Charge! Yesterday, Jordan and I ran the Hard Charge Obstacle Course! The course was about 4.5 miles with 20+ obstacles, including cargo net climbs, army crawls through mud, jumping over walls, over cars, through tires, waist high mud, mud and more mud!

We were part of a team, consisting of friends and workout buddies. Our heat was at 9:30, and it was chilly (42 degrees) and windy! The water was take-your-breath-away cold, literally! Jordan and I did the whole race together, helping each ot... Sun, 21 Apr 2013 17:08:11 EST Yasso 800s Last night, I did my first set of Yasso 800s, and it went really well. Mom told me she thought my 400s were too fast and that my 800s were too slow. I think my 400s were just right, but I agree that the 800s were slow.

The idea is to take your marathon goal time in HH:MM and run 800m in that same time MM:SS. I figured at 12 min/mile, my marathon time would be 5:14, so that's what I planned to run my Yassos in. I did the treadmill, which I had the option of 10:40 or 10:20 min/mile, ... Thu, 18 Apr 2013 18:03:19 EST Speed Work Last night I decided I want to start doing some speed work for my running. Not necessarily just because I want to be faster. But I like a challenge, and if I don't have some sort of goal or challenge, I get bored and complacent. So really, I want to add some speed work so that I can mix up my routine a little bit.

I think I'll alternate between 400m repeats and 800m repeats.

The formula I used for my 400s is you take your mile PR, divide it by 4, and then do that pace fo... Wed, 17 Apr 2013 14:54:03 EST Another tough workout... or two... Yesterday was my day off, so I went with Jordan to the Y in the morning and did the CrossFit WOD with his friends. It was "Barbara" - if you aren't familiar with CrossFit, lots of the workouts are named after women.

Barbara was not very nice, let me tell you.
5 RTF (rounds for time):
20 pullups
30 pushups
40 situps
50 squats
3 minutes rest

With the rest times included, I finished in about 42 minutes, just barely beating Jordan who finished i... Thu, 11 Apr 2013 08:33:40 EST Tough Workout Last night, Jordan and I worked out with 2 of his friends, one of whom is super-fit and pretty much works out for a living. We did 1/2 of a Seal Fit workout. Can't imagine doing the whole workout....

Warm up: 500 m row (2:20)
3 rounds of: 1 lap, 10 burpees, 10 situps, 10 spider lunges

Strength: Dead Lifts
10 @ 45#
8 @ 65#
6 @ 85#
4 @ 115#
10 rounds of 2 @ 135# (halfway through, I had to drop back to 115# as my form was suffering)

... Wed, 10 Apr 2013 09:43:48 EST Yesterday's workout I had planned on riding my bike outdoors for about 17.4 miles yesterday, but all said and done I did 22.66 miles! The last 5 were tough, as I was heading straight into the wind.

I iced my knee twice, for about 15 minutes each time. Today it feels fine, but we'll see how it feels when I exercise later.

I also took my glucosamine supplement yesterday. I need to be better about taking it, but the pill is huge, even when I split it in half, the halves are huge too! I'm not a... Sun, 7 Apr 2013 08:35:56 EST Random thoughts, updates, etc... Couldn't think of a good title for this blog, it's just an update of my past few days with some random thoughts thrown in.

Wednesday, I worked out with my friend after we got off work and did 35 minutes on the "moon-walker" aka AMT. Then we printed off the ST workout from the MobileFit unit that our Y uses. We did mostly core and legs. I like the idea of the system, because it prints of a workout for you, and then when you enter feedback, you can click "too hard, just right, too ea... Sat, 6 Apr 2013 08:17:21 EST March in review I tried typing this out last night, but my computer crashed and I lost it all. So here's the rundown, without all the fancy emoticons because I just don't want to spend the time doing that all over again... lol

Spiritual:
Do QT daily 5x/week, moving up to 7x (20/31)
Keep a prayer journal (20/31)
Memorize 1 scripture/week (5/5)

Healthy Eating:
Write out dinner meal plans weekly (4/4)
Eat 3 F&V/day, moving up to 5 (29/31)
Take mul... Wed, 3 Apr 2013 16:40:53 EST One time, I read on Sparkpeople... ...that if you dress in your workout clothes, you are less likely to talk yourself out of going to the gym! Testing this theory today because I do NOT feel like working out!! I am soooo sore (shoulders, traps) from CrossFit yesterday and am making every excuse to not go for a run. But the truth is, it's soooooo nice outside, it would be a shame to not run outdoors today!

Edit:
Also, telling people that you haven't worked out yet on facebook and Spark is very encouraging as wel... Thu, 28 Mar 2013 18:51:37 EST Protein Shake This morning, I finally tried the protein powder my mom bought for me a looooong time ago. This one was Mixed Berry, and it's rice protein. I made a shake with the powder, some frozen mixed berries, and milk...

Still gross. I guess I just don't like rice protein as much as soy and whey. Thanks for trying to find something I might like, Mom, but I'll let you keep your Mixed Berry shakes! 20 Wed, 27 Mar 2013 09:16:07 EST I've been eating like a bird! I actually hate this phrase, because as a Zoo Science major, I know that birds eat 25-50% of their body weight every day. So when people say they eat like a bird, what they think they mean is that they are "pecking" at their food and eating light. But what they are really saying is that they've been over-eating.

And mine is the latter. WAAAAAY over-eating. Because I haven't been tracking my food. Because I've been over-eating. Because I haven't been tracking my food...

T... Wed, 20 Mar 2013 16:10:22 EST McAllister's Deli On most Monday nights, we go to McAllister's Deli with Jordan's parents. I hadn't looked up their nutrition information in the past because, aside from the bread, I assumed most of their sandwiches were fairly healthy.

Imagine my SHOCK when I found the nutrition info for the Spicy Southwest Chicken Sandwich I had this past Monday! 930 calories! PLUS the pasta salad I had for my side. Ouch. Well, I tracked it even though I went WAAAAAAAAAAAAY over on calories for the day.

... Wed, 6 Mar 2013 13:58:16 EST Feb Recap and March Goals February is over and we're already 2 days into March! Wow, time flies! I finished up the 10 day challenge with a 1# weight loss, and 1/4" off my waist. Thanks to the bootcamp, I did a lot of strength training in February! 34

Anyway, on to the recap of last month's goals -

Spiritual:
48 Do QT daily 5x/week, moving up to 7x (19/28)
42 Keep a prayer journal (16/28)
248 Memorize 1 scripture/week (4/4)

... Sat, 2 Mar 2013 17:02:40 EST 10 Day Challenge! Today marked the first day of my local Y's 10 Day Challenge. Basically, it's a group training bootcamp for an hour each day for 10 days straight. Today we focused on legs. It was tough, but not impossible.

The impossible part is that the bootcamp is at 5:30 am. That means I have to get at 4:50 (IF I plan ahead and get work clothes, shower stuff and lunch packed the night before). I consider myself a morning person, but in the 4's? That's not morning. That's still nighttime.
... Mon, 18 Feb 2013 19:27:43 EST Jordan finally got his FitBit! My hubby's FitBit finally came in the mail yesterday!! He got it all set up and is ready to go! Let the competition begin!!!

Already today, we did a 60 minute group training with my mom. Then we each did our own thing for about 35 minutes, which I chose to walk on the treadmill just to stay warmed up. Jordan decided to run stairs, and then came back to brag that he was already at 27 flights and I was only at 14. :( Then after that, we did a CrossFit group with our friends. Jordan a... Wed, 13 Feb 2013 16:03:59 EST Level 17! 244 I am finally up to Level 17! It's nice to have a new trophy to look at!

In other news, this week was horrible and exhausting at work, and I definitely let emotional eating get the best of me, as well as letting me talk myself out of exercise because I was too "tired."

We'll see what the scale has to say tomorrow... Sat, 9 Feb 2013 08:02:36 EST January Recap and February Goals Now that the excitement of the new year is wearing off, often our goals seem less exciting and increasingly difficult to obtain. I am no different. I'm looking at my goals, asking myself what I was thinking to make so many! But I'm still working away at my goals on my journey to a better me!

Here's the recap from January -

Spiritual:
48 Do QT daily 5x/week, moving up to 7x (21/31)
42 Keep a prayer journal (19/31)
248 Mem... Sun, 3 Feb 2013 16:55:58 EST Eat Better, Feel Fitter Challenge, Week 2 Well I finally completed week 1, tracking all my food for 7 days straight! Didn't make it in my range every day, but was close. Today I am starting week 2, and already am having issues.

The challenge is to eat 5 servings of veggies a day, and try 2 new veggies or ways to cook veggies this week.

I still struggle getting 5 servings of fruits AND veggies a day, nevermind veggies alone! I'm "adjusting" this challenge to fit where I am in this journey to include fruits as wel... Fri, 1 Feb 2013 08:12:12 EST Tracked nutrition 3 days so far I've tracked everything I've eaten for 3 days now. Last night I knew I was going to go over calories, but I still tracked anyway. It was tough, but I faced up to what I ate...

I had a good workout yesterday. Jordan and I went to the Y and did the treadmill for 45 minutes. I did 4 miles total, running 2.5 of that. Slowly but surely, I'm determined to make up for the miles I've missed so far this year.

Also, I am challenging myself to 11,000 steps each day this week. Sunda... Mon, 28 Jan 2013 07:52:54 EST Eating Out Last night, Jordan and I went to one of our favorite restaurants: Olive Garden! Yes, Italian food, loaded with cheese and carbs. Yummy!!

I tracked my breakfast and lunch so I knew exactly how many calories, carbs, fats, and proteins I had left. I went onto Olive Garden's website beforehand to see what I could have and still be in range.

Did you know that ONE breadstick is 140 cal? And the salad with dressing is 150? And that most meals are 800-1400????

If I ... Sat, 26 Jan 2013 15:14:51 EST Eat Better, Feel Fitter Challenge I started the "Eat Better, Feel Fitter" Challenge today. One of the goals for the week is to track my food.

Of course, this is something I struggle with... I do really well with breakfast and lunch, but dinner takes too long to track every little ingredient and I usually don't get on the computer after dinner, so then I have trouble remembering what to log from the night before.

Silly excuses, I know. So hopefully this challenge will motivate me to track my dinners! Wed, 23 Jan 2013 16:09:34 EST 1st Race of the Year Complete! My first race of 2013 was on Sunday. It was an Indoor Sprint Tri, put on by my local YMCA. I did 2 of these last year.

I didn't do great, but I finished under an hour, so it wasn't awful either.

I went out WAY too fast on the swim and the 500 yards nearly killed me. Swimming is by far my weakest event. Then I transitioned to the bike, where the strap on my left pedal kept coming loose. One of the volunteers kept trying to fix it for me, but each time he did, I had to sto... Wed, 16 Jan 2013 09:28:55 EST Revamping Goals already... We're 10 days into the new year, and I am already finding that I need to re-work some of my 2013 goals. Which is fine.
