After two days of hard driving, our first destination stop was Bryce Canyon. We stayed in the most wonderful rickety hotel, with the most amazing manager! We hiked and mountain biked. My husband caught his first trout. We saw beautiful canyons and climbed up rocks and scurried down into creeks and waterfalls. We had campfires and watched the full moon and listened to coyotes. We were so relaxed in Southern Utah, I was sad to leave.
<i... Tue, 12 Sep 2017 08:54:20 EST 17th Bike Crashiversary Today is the 17th anniversary of the bike crash that changed my life, so I went for a ride. I endured four surgeries (including 3 shoulder replacements), a case of osteomylitis, nine years of no active range of motion in my dominant arm, and a lot of physical therapy to finally get an arm that works at a functioning level. It took me 13 years to get back on a bicycle. I am still afraid, but I do it. I do it because I won't let that single accident rule my life. Now I own two bicycles, and I r... That was what Siri told me yesterday morning, when I found myself in a random trailer park 12 miles south of downtown Louisville. Technically, I supposed I actually had arrived. I had arrived at the destination to which she guided me. However, it wasn't the destination I requested. I had asked her to take me to 2nd Street in Louisville, to all the parking for the Kentucky Derby Marathon. I have no idea why Siri took me the trailer park, but at 6:30am, with a car full of fr... Fri, 17 Mar 2017 11:47:48 EST 35th Anniversary Trip This past week my husband and I celebrated 35 years of marriage. It doesn't seem that long. We actually only knew each other 11 days on the day we got married. He was a really good first date!!

We decided to go somewhere for the weekend, but couldn't decide at where to go. Our first choice was Milwaukee. It's strange for someone from Kentucky to want to go to Milwaukee for vacation. Everyone around here wants to go to the beach. A week of sand in my shorts in not my idea of fun. Bu... Sun, 24 Jul 2016 17:39:40 EST No Feuding, Just Running, 2016 What can you say about running 26.2 miles in 95 degree heat, over mountains, through feuding country? You can say it's brutal, it's hard, and it's just about the most fun you can have along the Kentucky/West Virginia border!

This is the 3rd time I've run this race. The first time was 2012. I completed the full. The last half of the last half was so hot, and it kicked my butt. I was spent!! Having forgotten how awful I felt during the last 6 miles, I signed up for it again in 2013.... Sun, 12 Jun 2016 19:20:16 EST RunTheBluegrass 2016, Race Report This is a race that is super hilly. Even though I run hillier courses, there is something about the way these hills are laid out that makes this course really challenging. It is the most challenging half marathon in Kentucky. It is also one of the prettiest in the country!
Race day morning, 43 degrees, sunny, no wind. I had my outfit picked out, and I was going to wear a skirt. For some reason, my skirt was not with my shirt. There was a pair of capris there. I didn't feel like looking f... Sun, 3 Apr 2016 15:28:50 EST Setbacks -- Regroup, figure it out, go on On May 16th I walked a half marathon with my friend. I normally run, but my friend is not a runner. Apparently, I am not built for walking. Around mile 6 my toes on my right foot stopped bending, and my foot was extremely painful. Long story short, I had a long, diagonal, displaced fracture of my 2nd metatarsal (aka broken foot with a sideways separated bone). The bone is displaced by about 3mm. It's been a little over two months, and I don't have clearance to run yet, but my foot is feeling ... That's how I trained for it, and that's how I was going to race it. I kept that up the first 4 hours, then I got a little lazy, and I went to a 1 1/2 min run:30 sec walk. I'm tired from swimming, biking, running today :-)

How did my tri go? It was good!! We got in the pool to warm up. I was in the first heat (aka "slowpoke" heat). I shared a lane with a man named Chuck. He was faster than I was, but since we didn't circle swim, it was okay. We each stayed on our side of the black line. The pool was different than the pool at the Y. The chemicals were different, and it caught me off guard. It affected my breathing at... The temperature is just below the freezing point, the sun is shining, and we couldn't ask for a more perfect February day. All the snow from last weekend has melted, and today is a day to get things done. But I'm not going to get anything done except maybe some house work. Today I choose to be lazy and enjoy the sunshine through my windows.

As an injured runner, I've spent the last 6 weeks or so lamenting the fact that I cannot get out on ... Lots and lots of love. Our new son-in-law makes our daughter happy. They complete each other. Sun, 26 Aug 2012 21:53:22 EST Run With All Your Hart Yesterday I ran a 4 mile race. I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to run it. I’ve been very sick for about 3 weeks. I didn’t realize I was as sick as I was, but when the clinical diagnosis was made Friday, it was whooping cough. I had a lab test, but by the time the results get back, I will be over it. Sun, 12 Aug 2012 10:49:13 EST Running is all about fun and prettiness I love running these trails.
Sun, 5 Aug 2012 11:30:00 EST Are your kids ever too old to brag about? No, never. Yesterday I took my daughter on a really long run. She’s 30 years old, mother of 4, stepmom to 2, and earlier this year she decided to get herself in shape. Sometimes as a mom, you lose yourself in the kids and forget where you left you. It’s easy enough to do that with one child, let alone 6. So earlier this year she followed my lead and took up running. Running allows her time on the road with just her and whoever she chooses to take along for the run – sometimes I go with her, sometimes s... Sun, 29 Jul 2012 12:11:39 EST No Feudin, Just Runnin That's the motto of the Hatfield-McCoy race -- No feudin, just runnin. Today I ran the full marathon at the Hatfield-McCoy. This was an amazingly fun race!!

It started out last night. My husband and I drove the 3 hours to eastern Kentucky, and got there just in time for a wonderful pasta dinner. Sat, 9 Jun 2012 21:06:40 EST Beaten by a Flying Pig Today was the day I was supposed to be awesome. Today was the day of my second full marathon. It was my day to say, “Oh, yeah. I can run 26.2 miles – no problem!” I’ve trained hard, and I’ve trained well. There was no reason I shouldn’t have been able to do. But sometimes, things just don’t go as planned.

My training started at the beginning of the year. My friend, Erin, and I would get up in the wee hours on Saturday or Sunday, and run in the dark and the cold. We would run for mi... Sun, 6 May 2012 20:31:52 EST Determination, and the Power of the Human Spirit Yesterday I had the most amazing experience. As a runner, I don't often get the chance to be a spectator at a race. Since I'm running a full marathon next week, though, I wanted to go cheer for my friends who were running the Kentucky Derby Marathon and Mini-Marathon.

I originally planned to go to Louisville to cheer for my friend and running partner, Erin. She was running her first marathon, and we had trained together all winter long. No way was I going to miss it!! I had to see... Sun, 29 Apr 2012 12:52:27 EST Fun and prettiness I love to run. It's fun. Any exercise you do should be fun. If it's not, you're doing the wrong thing. I take pictures when I run, because to me, running is all about fun and prettiness. Even if something is fun, if you are in an ugly environment, it will quickly become un-fun. So yes... Fun and prettiness. That's why I run.

Here is an example of my fun. When my daughter and I were running, I thought it was a good idea to climb into a hollow tree stump. Her much younger legs allowe... Sat, 7 Apr 2012 15:06:03 EST Hills? What hills? I ran the hilliest Half Marathon ever in the history of mankind. Seriously, the hills just wouldn't let up. You'd crest one hill, just to see the next one looming at the bottom of the one you're on. Over and over and over again. I've run the course in training runs before, and I knew what to expect. So I went into the race treating it as a training run for my upcoming full marathon, and had tons of fun. I ran a mile before the race, and a mile after the race, a total of 15 miles today. Mostly... Active Children = Healthy Children Sun, 25 Dec 2011 20:00:24 EST Strong as an Iron Horse... I started running in May, 2008, at the age of 49. When I mean “started,” I mean that literally. I ran for about 30 seconds, then paused to gasp for air. By July of that year, I ran my first 5K. I was over the moon ecstatic, and so happy I could run 3.1 miles non-stop. I kept running, and on my 50th birthday I broke 30 minutes with a 29:20 5K. I thought I was doing GREAT, so I kept on running. In November 2008, I ran a half marathon. My time was 2:14:19. Not bad for a 6-month running rookie! A... Tue, 25 Oct 2011 13:01:59 EST Canning and dehydrating My husband and I have a pretty massive garden, so we always have an abundance of fresh vegetables and fruit. I learned how to preserve food years and years ago, and I probably do more canning than most people. Canning is a lost art. It's so much fun, though, and so rewarding! Right now the gardening season is coming to an end, and all we have left is sweet potatoes. Lots and lots of sweet potatoes. We went to the orchard and bought a bunch of apples (hopefully we'll have some of our own by n... Wed, 12 Oct 2011 07:57:41 EST #RunKY (Run Kentucky) Once when running with a friend, I stopped to take a picture of sunlight dancing on a creek. It was amazing, really. I made the comment that running is all about “fun and prettiness.” I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t have fun, and I certainly wouldn’t do it in an ugly, drab, gloomy place. The interesting thing about it is, everywhere I run turns pretty. That's the beauty of running in Kentucky.

For instance:
Cracks in the sidewalk.
<img src=" Mon, 10 Oct 2011 13:55:25 EST Aah, fatigue,my sworn RA enemy. Fatigue can even disrupt sleep.

Sometimes fatigue shows up unexpectedly, but sometimes fatigue is invited by our actions. And apparently I sent him an unwritten, unspoken invitation. My experience as a Hood-To-Coast Ghost For those of you who have never heard of the Hood-To-Coast relay, you should probaby google it, or my blog will make no sense. In a quick summary version, though, it's a relay race in Oregon, where teams race from one point to another, with each team member running a set amount of "legs." In HTC, there were 36 legs, so each of our SparkTeam members ran 3 legs a piece.

In order to share the love and the excitement, SparkTeam Hood-To-Coasters were each paired with a ghost runner. It's the sweet, sweet taste of summery goodness!!

After dinner was over, we snapped beans, and we canned 18 pints. I've already snapped and canned 52 pints of beans in the last week, so this evening I wasn't really feelin' the love when it came to sitting there snapping beans. Normally I find the whole bean process very relaxing. Tonight... Wed, 3 Aug 2011 21:54:20 EST Bluegrass 10,000 – Race report. After several months of sporadic training due to foot issues, I’ve been not racing well at all. My speed is slow, and I generally feel like doo-doo during the race.

But not today. I knew I’d be pleased with my race today. I knew it wouldn’t be my fastest – and, indeed it wasn’t. It was actually my slowest 10K. But I also knew I would give it a good, solid effort.

The biggest stressor in this race was actually my outfit. Silly, I know. I had red/white shorts, and a blue ... Mon, 4 Jul 2011 10:59:54 EST "You're always in the moment." “You’re always in the moment, Jeri. You’re always in the moment.” That’s what my husband said to me this morning. Yes, it seems that for the most part I am always in the moment. Life is too short to worry about the what-ifs of tomorrow, or to fret over the decisions of yesterday. We have the moment, so be in it!!

Of course, I’m not completely ridiculous with it. I do plan for a lot of things. But for the most part, I’m a fly by the seat of my pants sort of person, and it works well... Sun, 26 Jun 2011 15:25:57 EST The fun of group runs This morning I got up at 4:00 to drive to Lexington to run with a group of people. I’ve never done a group run before. I wasn’t sure what to expect. We met at Keeneland (a horse race track) to run 13.1 miles (mapping out a new Half Marathon course). It’s been a while since I’ve run double digits. My feet are really not in a mood to cooperate. My lungs are good, my heart rate is good, my legs are good… but my feet do not like the distance. It’s all part of rheumatoid arthritis. Even though I l... Sat, 11 Jun 2011 14:18:26 EST
