JEM0622's SparkPeople Blog JEM0622's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community At A Crossroads A lot has been going on inside of the last 30+ days. Between losing my job (and trying to find a new one), unexpected other loss, having to commute to a job again....the stars are not in alignment. Further, I really do not know what I want to do regarding fitness. I wake each morning with my caloric range in my head, and I am making good choices based on what I know. I respect the range and I am grateful for that. I am not motivated to sign up for a specific race, and right now I feel like th... Fri, 28 Dec 2012 18:23:07 EST Attitude of Gratitude We all should really try to look at each day in a positive way. Some days are harder than others. For day:

Woke up! - positive
Fed the kids - positive
Made all required lunches - positive
Got the kids off to school - positive
Recycle guy picked up all of our recycles - positive (i recycle a lot!)
Made all my scheduled meetings - positive
No calls from school - positive
Attended the PTA meeting - positive (maybe? lol)
Ran the dish... Tue, 2 Oct 2012 21:54:17 EST Slow Down I've been having fun finding the appropriate Beatles song for my blogs 334

Today was about slowing down. Not in many ways, really. Just in movement. It is something that, unless you want to get injured again, you have to do after a race. I've been injured, and don't want to be again. So I had to slow down today.

I still packed up lunches, put out recycles, hung laundry, walked the dog, etc. etc. All that 'to do' stuff that is just a part of what has to be d... Mon, 1 Oct 2012 21:06:45 EST Carry That Weight Man does 0400 come early in the morning! But given my forgetfulness of last evening, it was best to get up, get my bearings, gather my stuff, remember the stuff I forgot, and get on the road.

A stale cup of coffee is still a stale cup of coffee, no matter the hour 101

But a tasty pumpkin pie bagel does warm the soul and move the soul out the door 334

You do know you are ambitious when you take very seriously the notification that tr... Sun, 30 Sep 2012 20:32:29 EST That Means A Lot Did you know that is also a Beatles song? I did not. You learn something new all the time!

Anywho...busy day here. I saunter up to the table and announce my name.

what?

sigh. anxiety. digging for email history on my phone. race director (that I know) is on the phone having her people check.

nothin... Sat, 29 Sep 2012 19:30:05 EST Twist and Shout's all about the might as well make it fun!

I felt the title is appropriate. It describes where I am, and it certainly describes how I've been feeling lately.

Twist - well, the twist part is a reflection of where I am with fitness and pondering what the next destination is. More of the same? A new goal? Should I twist out of what I've been doing to get moving more? Or just register for something because it's different and go with it? I'm thinking o... Fri, 28 Sep 2012 17:14:12 EST serious angst it could only be 7 days and counting to something i haven't ever tried. thank you for the you tube videos. i am grateful i have had skill drills. i am thankful for breathing drills. i have had no practice with a wet suit. nothing. i just want to come out on the other side intact. knowing me...i'll end up renting a suit and i'll add minutes to my transition but oh well. i think i could survive on what i had but the trouble is that it is colder where i live...with regard to where i am swimming.... Sun, 2 Sep 2012 21:33:21 EST Throw Caution to the Wind You know that saying...if you wait until the time is right, or all conditions are perfect...then it will never happen.

I think a lot can be said for not waiting. Drop the self doubt. Drop the fear. Drop the disbelief. This is not to discount the tools or training you might need...but taking that first step is the beginning of something that could be great. Wed, 22 Aug 2012 12:53:06 EST Tough Goodbyes Sometimes we get to say goodbye, and sometimes there isn't an opportunity or a time to do that. My hope for many Spark friends is that you do get the chance to say goodbye. Whether it is a friend moving away, or moving on to a new job, or having a really tough and sorrowful time of sending someone on to the other side. I think we deserve and need this important step, regardless of circumstance.

I have had this opportunity many times, but there is a time I didn't get to do this. I f... Tue, 21 Aug 2012 22:35:01 EST Make It Good Gosh life sure seems busy and demanding these days. There is a lot of good that comes from it, and that is where I like to keep my focus. I helped with coordination and fundraising for a Women's Distance Festival that was held today. I loved seeing the gym full of Moms of all ages, daughters, sisters, and all the men who marshaled the course for us. It was a very good thing.

The event gives back to our community, and I love to be a part of things like that. I loved that it was on ... Sat, 11 Aug 2012 11:03:54 EST Painful Loss No, this isn't a story about weight loss. This is about the loss of a person who I would have so loved to meet in person...but did not. However our friendship was strong. I am sure we can all attest to how strong we develop bonds here on SP. This is about a wonderful woman named Teresa. She was the quiet type. Not quick to jump on a bandwagon or say the popular thing. Very much centered on her family, and not spending so much time wishing for different family. She maybe, if I talk to her one ... Thu, 5 Jul 2012 23:21:44 EST Y-M-C-A Since Memorial Day weekend, we have been members of our local Y. We had talked about it, and it really was ideal so that I could get ready for my late September Sprint Tri.

Last Sunday, I went through an orientation of the machines in the Fitness Center. The trouble? Where I log in when I am exercising is separate from SP. So you guys do not know what I have been up to. 24

I finally got off my duff. The last few weigh ins, the number just goes up instead of down. I really didn't think I'd be sitting here, having to lose 10 lbs. Not 5, but 10, to get back to goal weight. If I float a few lbs away from my goal doesn't bother me. But 10 lbs changes how my clothes fit. I will not buy other clothes to make this acceptable. It has been giving me anxiety problems, that this is happening. As a ca... Wed, 9 May 2012 07:52:49 EST Frederick Half Marathon Relay Race Report - May 6 2012 So I will preface this blog by saying I am grateful the day arrived, and that I was eager to be a part of the day despite a 3 week hiatus from running. Skin surgery was a necessary evil, but the inconvenience of the gauze/paper tape changes (and inability to run because it could all fall off and I had no one to re-apply) made for a stinky situation!

I am grateful that I arrived suture free to the race. It was such a relief to have them removed early.

The day was due to ... Sun, 6 May 2012 21:13:52 EST Goodbye, Cupcake This blog could have so many meanings. Sun, 29 Apr 2012 22:09:52 EST Sunscreen So...I am sure you have heard the radio song/epitaph about wearing your sunscreen. It is more advice to the young ones on life and their path forward after high school graduation. Well...nearly 20 years after high school graduation...I have a more important lesson for myself and others. It isn't about professional or academia lessons. It's about being smart any time the sun will kiss your skin. It doesn't matter what time of year it is. Sure...we figure the sun is hottest/most dangerous in th... I'll be 38 this year. I had cancer tests myself last Summer. Why? Because my sister has PCOS. I lost my grandmother (maternal) to ovarian cancer. Or should that be goals :) As pare of the BLC 18, I was asked to define/share what my short term, medium term and long term goals and rewards are.

Now, I will first start with the rewards. The rewards are good health. I have never been one to lay claim to a materialistic thing to get in return for doing what I should to take care of me. I don't think I should have to do these things to earn cute toes or fingers or hair or a relaxed back. That is part of hygiene and well being also.... Mon, 5 Mar 2012 23:39:53 EST Julie's Bad Apples So as part of the BLC 18 Disney Princess Challenge, I was asked to define/reflect on something that is an obstacle to you in your weight loss journey (this can be a thing, an attitude, a person) and determine how to overcome this (Just one time over the weekend)

While I was pretty stumped, I think the biggest thing is value of self and that making the time for self is not a negative thing. Will I make excuses for that? No. Do I have a good reason (and not an excuse)? Well, only for 2 of those 4 days. Mon, 28 Nov 2011 21:27:12 EST Week 4, Day 1 Well, today was a struggle. I fell while descending stairs on Saturday evening. Had a plate of food and drink for my oldest. Landed right on my tailbone. This slowed today's pace by nearly 2 minutes. 46 And it did hurt while I ran, but not as bad as it could have...thanks to Ibuprofen. 24

At least I got out there. I didn't do anything yesterday except eat right. Off to see how I handle the PT portion of today. Mon, 14 Nov 2011 14:07:35 EST Week 3, Day 1 So I completely skipped over Week 2, but here we are in Week 3. I will say that I was downright horrible with stretching last week. 198

Due to weekend obligations, I did not do my cardio (2 miles of brisk walk) or ST (upper body). You know we (folks who enjoy the run/jog/walk/etc) tend to advise eager new faces to get good shoes and that a great start is a couch to 5k. Okay, agreed. But something that has really been on my mind is this...why not really nail that 1 mile I am allowed...get to the target pace I want to be at, and then slowly increase my distance? (Note: PT doc said do not extend distance and set a pace goal at the same time. if focusing on pace...keep to same numb... Mon, 10 Oct 2011 12:28:58 EST PT Progress Report It's been nearly 20 days since my last update, so I wanted to post a blog on my PT. Mon, 26 Sep 2011 14:07:58 EST PT Progress Report So this week it was mixed up a little with the holiday. Had PT on Tuesday and Thursday. Added some ribbons and sideways run drills, as well as upping the pace on the TM. The PT doc didn't like me taking walk breaks because she couldn't get a feel for how the constant running would bother the knee. So this week there were no walk breaks.

On Tuesday, I got up to 4.5 on the TM with 0 incline. Today, I got up to 5.0 with 0 incline.

I will have an eval next Wednesday to see ...
