JECKIE's SparkPeople Blog JECKIE's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Hello 2014 2013 seems to have been a rough year for many, myself included. Work woes, injuries, etc. all made it more challenging than I would have liked.

That said, 2014 is going to be great! I won't accept anything less. :) And I have a goal!

I want to PR the half distance in the fall. To do that, I need to do a few things:

- Get my eating back on track. It's not terrible, but it has been sloppy over the past month or so. For me the best way to get back on track is t... Tue, 31 Dec 2013 09:06:02 EST Still breathing... Well, breathing may be an exaggeration today. This cold has me wheezing at best. I hope I can manage through my workout tonight! Yikes!

Anyway, things are good, just busy. New job started on Monday, and while I'm not yet super busy I am off my game because of the change. I am the type of person that needs structure in my life, even if it's just knowing that I own the lack of structure and can focus on creating structure around it. But having none of that has been tough. I will get ... Fri, 13 Dec 2013 09:57:34 EST And it's a wrap! Aaah. Sleep, beautiful sleep. So loved after a crazy week!

Saturday night went off without a hitch. We were prepared and ready, and it was a wonderful night!

The day started at R&T's house, getting auction items together, making sure name tags were set, etc. But we also spent a lot of time wondering if we were missing anything since it seemed too easy. That's the beauty of an experienced team - everything was done ahead of time!

We packed the cars and headed ... Mon, 18 Nov 2013 10:48:58 EST 2 days, and being awesome Why am I awesome today? Well, that would be because despite not feeling well (i'm getting a sinus infection - 'tis the season), I not only went to the gym but had a kick-a$$ workout.

Food was pretty good today. I was munchy, but ate all whole food, healthy munchies thanks to being prepared. :)

Here's the workout:

Warm Up - 5 min

Set A - Repeat 4 times
Push Ups X 10
Landmines X 45 pounds X 10

Set B - Repeat 4 times
Standing... Wed, 13 Nov 2013 19:45:39 EST 3 days, and a slacking blogger Yikes! SO busy I haven't blogged in a couple days.

I've been good, though. Eating mostly on track, moving a lot.

Here's today's workout. It was "Butts and Guts" night:

Run 2 (slow) miles
Stretch for 10 minutes
Ladder drills - 10 minutes

Set A - repeat twice
Single Leg Glute Bridge X10
Kettlebell Reverse Lunge - 40 lbs. I fell asleep on the couch last night)

So today was a pretty good day. It started at the gym, then I went to the mall and didn't lose it with anyone, spent the afternoon with my best friend getting some work done and it ended with me and D watching Castle. :) I love days like that!

For those who asked, here is the Paleo apple pancake recipe:

rain-free-goodies/german-apple-pancake/

And here's ... Sun, 10 Nov 2013 08:44:47 EST 7 days, and struggles Today was a bad day.

Oh, I suppose if you looked at my calories they wouldn't be too bad. But carby: a muffin with coffee for breakfast, pumpkin chips and hummus for lunch, and a BLT for dinner. And no workout.

I got some bad news today that I was somewhat expecting but still kicked me in the gut. That's why no workout. I had my gym bag all packed and in my office, but I didn't have the heart to go.

But I'm not letting this derail me. Tomorrow will start wit... Fri, 8 Nov 2013 19:07:54 EST 8 days, and the dress So last night I went dress shopping. By the time I got home I was exhausted, thus no blog. I just crawled into bed.

Anyway, the past two days have been okay. Not much in the way of exercise, since I've been running around like a crazy woman.

As for food, yesterday was eggs for breakfast, meatloaf for lunch, and we went to Chilis for dinner, which isn't my favorite. So I had spicy shrimp tacos and didn't eat the rice and beans. All okay, but not great.

Today ... Thu, 7 Nov 2013 19:42:33 EST 10 days, and The Hungries Decent day today. I busted my butt at the gym:

Warm up stretching
Ladder drills - 10 minutes
Repeat this circuit 3 times:
- Single Leg Glute Bridge X15 each leg
- Leg Lowers X 15 each leg
- Donkey kicks X15 each leg
- Plank with overhead reach X15 each arm
- Side to side hops X10
- Standing plate circles X15 each direction
- Reverse lunges X15 each leg

As for food, I've done okay:
B: coffee, roast veggies
L: meatloaf... Tue, 5 Nov 2013 19:31:39 EST 11 days and our final planning meeting Our final face to face meeting for this shindig was tonight. Yikes! So much still to do. But we're on our way! Even got a last minute donation (intro flying lesson! Whee!)

So no exercise for me today. Monday is generally my rest day anyway, so no shocker there. Food-wise I did well, especially considering I had many temptations (Whose idea was it to put a Crumbs cake shop in the mall, anyway?)

B: coffee, roast veggies
L: meatloaf
Snacks: carrots and celery; sma... Mon, 4 Nov 2013 21:53:00 EST 12 days and writing product descriptions I was a bit a victim of my own success this year. We have SO many awesome donations for our charity auction. That means many write ups to be done! So I spent some time today doing that.

First, though, I did go to the gym. Walked there in a light snowfall, which was really pretty (didn't stick). Had a good TRX/Kettlebell workout but didn't really track the details. I know there were rows and curls and kettlebell swings, etc. But not really in any order. I dislike when they don't wr... Sun, 3 Nov 2013 18:37:03 EST 13 days and creating a quiet space I love quiet weekends. They restore me (hello, I'm a classic introvert). So being home for the whole weekend alone with no car is just what I needed!

Decent workout this morning. The Doctor was away, so we had a sub. She was okay, though she didn't push the way he does. Anyway, here are our sets:

Set 1 - repeat 4 times

Box Jumps X 8
Army Crawls X 8 each side

Set 2 - repeat 4 times

Kettlebell lunge with side twist - 15 lbs X 8 each si... Sat, 2 Nov 2013 19:29:07 EST 14 days, and pasta? It's true... I ate pasta. Not a ton, but I made a critical error in my grocery purchasing and gave in. Not worried about it. I'll just be extra non-carby tomorrow.

I'm tired, so this will be short.

Exercise was walking, that's all.

Food:

B: 1 hard boiled egg, coffee, 1 apple with almond butter
L: brussel sprout slaw
D: fresh ravioli, steak

I dress shopped, but so far no luck. I want something cute and black so I can buy crazy ... Fri, 1 Nov 2013 20:12:06 EST 15 days, and stuffed mushrooms Today was a good day. Rest day from exercise, since I wasn't up for running in the cold and I'm really sore from last night. Food-wise, the day worked out well even through the challenge of Whole Foods, where there is carby goodness around every corner.

I ended at over 100g of protein (yay!) and about 58g carbs, of which 19 were in the apple. All in all, I'm pleased.

B: coffee, 2 hard boiled eggs, apple with almond butter
L: goat cheese salad with chicken
D: p... Thu, 31 Oct 2013 20:26:09 EST 16 days and a World Series... Wonderful day today.

First off... GO SOX! I'm watching my boys in what I expect will be the final game of the World Series. It has been nearly 100 years since they have won the WS at home (2004 and 2007 were both away) and our city is SO ready! I WILL be trying to find a way to go to the celebration parade. :)

Ok, on to the healthy living. :)

Food was good:
Breakfast: coffee black, 2 hard boiled eggs
Lunch: small amount of pork ribs, a couple chick... Wed, 30 Oct 2013 21:00:10 EST 17 days of awesome Okay, it's time for a mini challenge. It has been a while since I've set one for myself, so why not!

On November 16th we will be running our 4th annual Peak Potential DInner and Auction event. This is our biggest fundraiser for the year, and preparations have been going incredibly well.

That's where this picture was taken last year (on the right):

So, between now and then my goal ... Tue, 29 Oct 2013 19:21:12 EST What many fail to realize... Is that for me, it's not about losing weight. It's about being healthy and strong, and being so when I'm 90. It's about avoiding heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, etc. It's about being able to climb a mountain and see three states with just the turn of my head. It's about walking through 120 degree temps to see the Taj Mahal. It's about saying "sure, I'll do that with you!" and then figuring out HOW.

It's knowing that we only get a century to do everything we want to do and I a... Wed, 28 Aug 2013 18:56:21 EST Article Share: Where's the Meat?

e-meat-foods-that-pretend/
Fri, 23 Aug 2013 14:53:58 EST For my Sheriffs and other BLCers I shared this video with the Sheriffs yesterday. Some of you may have noticed that we've decided we're done with mediocrity, we're done with making excuses as to why we aren't succeeding during the round or are *gasp* gaining between rounds. We're done with everything except working towards being the most awesome versions of ourselves we can be 24/7/365. So who's with us, BLCers? WHO is going to decide that regardless of what the calendar says, or what the "rules" say, you are better, stronge... Thu, 1 Aug 2013 09:26:38 EST My starting #s for BLC22 This has been written for days, but I haven't had internet at home so I couldn't get the pic off my computer! Oops! Anyway, here it is. :)

6/6/13
Crunches: 50
Push Ups: 20
Plank: 90 seconds
Bridges: 2 min, 26 sec
1.5 mile run: 18 min.

Flexibility pic:
Tue, 11 Jun 2013 08:36:39 EST IT Band Update... So it has been a week since my last run (the half). My ITB feels okay as long as I don't overdue it. Saturday I had PT in the morning followed by walking around a farmer's market for a while. I was really really sore after that.

My ankle is swollen, but the PT said it's just from how I'm walking right now. Ugh. I hate all the over-analyzing of every little ache and pain. I need to be back to healthy! I'm dying to go for a run. A couple more weeks at least, though, before I'm back ... Mon, 13 May 2013 10:11:25 EST Flying Pig Half - part 2 So Sunday we met in the lobby at 5:30. *Yawn*. That’s early! We all made our way down to the start line and found our corrals. Tammy and I were in G, so we hung around and chatted with nearby runners as we waited. The moment of silence for Boston, followed by “Sweet Caroline” and “Dirty Water” made me smile. I felt the love for my city all weekend!

It was almost 20 minutes after the gun went off before ... Thu, 9 May 2013 07:53:59 EST Flying Pig Half, Cincinnati, May 5, 2013 - part 1 Flying Pig Half Marathon
May 5, 2013 (Happy Cinco de Mayo!)
2:58:28

Slowest half ever. And I’m proud of it!... but I’m ahead of myself.

The weekend started Thursday night. I left work and ran around like a crazy woman packing, picking up snacks, etc. Then I picked up Tracy and we were on the road by 6:30! Thankfully this allowed rush hour traffic to mostly clear, and we got out of Mass with no problem.

New York City is where we started to get silly.... Wed, 8 May 2013 11:39:09 EST Thanks! Here goes nothing! Thanks for putting up with my ramblings the past couple weeks. They went so quickly! And here it is, race weekend! :) I'm off tonight after work for the first leg of our journey (after I shop and pack, of course!) and I couldn't be more excited!

The leg feels good today. Compression socks are going on for the drive (can't run in them, unfortunately) and the Stick is going into the car!

Last night I went out to eat and was so good! It's amazing how well I do when I stick... Thu, 2 May 2013 13:51:30 EST Please oh please let my leg behave... Ugh. Ran 2.5 miles last night. Last "keep loose" run before the race this weekend. And there was pain. This is not good.

My left knee - the opposite one from the one I have been doing PT on - was surgically "fixed" several years ago. I haven't had much of an issue since. But the calf has been super tight the past few weeks. :( So now I'm pretty freaked that I'm going to have problems this weekend. I'm stretching like crazy, and will hope for the best (what else can I do?) and pray ... Wed, 1 May 2013 08:33:24 EST Tuesday morning "regrets" I'm not much for regrets, so this isn't really about that. It's more about the fact that yes, I am paying for last night.

Bloaty? Oh yeah. Ick. I just want to drown myself in water today!

So dinner was...blah. I'm not a fan of chain restaurants to begin with, and this one was less impressive than most. I ordered a salad with steak tips on it, which was fine though really boring. And I had a couple buffalo chicken wings - also fine. What wasn't fine was that someone else... Tue, 30 Apr 2013 08:50:40 EST Monday, Monday... My inner 5 year old is functioning well this morning. The soundtrack in my head has been:

- Where in the World is Carmen Sandiago
- The Muppet Show theme song
- Mananana

:)

Anyway, this weekend was the "let's start to pack" weekend. Fun times! My legs felt really heavy last night, though, so I need to work on some stretching for the week.

No official workouts this past weekend, but my eating was on track. I tried a new recipe last night... Mon, 29 Apr 2013 10:46:14 EST It's a beautiful morning... 335

I always loved Belle in the Disney film Beauty & the Beast because when things were good, she sang. I feel like singing this morning! It's so beautiful out. I slept with the windows open last night - best sleep ever!

Anyway, PT this morning went well. Though he gave me the "lecture" about tapering properly. I'm bad at it. I feel lazy! But my legs need the rest, so I shall try to behave. Lots of stretching and icing!

Last night was one of thos... Thu, 25 Apr 2013 10:19:01 EST And another day missed... oops! I'm terrible at this blogging daily thing! I get too busy, I think.

Anyway, let's see. Monday was pretty calm. I have a standing "date" on Monday nights - TV night. That's the only night I ever sit in front of the tv, and we catch up on our mutual shows (right now it's Once Upon a Time. Love it!) So there was that.

Yesterday was a great day, despite the rain and chill. I ate clean, had a kick butt workout, and even slept despite some really weird dreams. The work, thou... Wed, 24 Apr 2013 08:52:34 EST Weekend Slacker Report Ooh, I didn't blog on Friday. I was way too caught up in the news. Oops!

Anyway, I had a phenomenal weekend. I spent it with my youngest sister (I have several, but she is 10 years younger than I am) watching tv, eating things I shouldn't, and really just recharging. I needed it in a big way!

Back at it today, though. I prepped food for the week. Lunches are mashed sweet potato, green beans, chicken sausage and a touch of blue cheese. One of my favorite meals. Breakfas... Mon, 22 Apr 2013 10:02:30 EST Sunny Thursday Boy, this week has been a kick in the teeth, hasn't it? Wow. West Texas, we are praying for you!

For me, last night was a bit of a return to "normal", whatever that is. I watched the ballgame (Go Sox!), cried at the memorial before the Bruins game, and slept the sleep of the truly exhausted.

Before that I hit up both a half hour core class (oww oww oww) and an hour long cardio/strength class. Got a great sweat on, and I felt great! Knees even behaved like they are suppo... Thu, 18 Apr 2013 08:27:51 EST The Run Doctor's Orders... Take 1 set of tight calves, add light rain, a killer headwind and one really pissed off attitude and what do you get? A personal best on the 5K, apparently.

363

That's what I did last night. Previously my absolute best road 5K was around 37 minutes. Last night it was around 35. And while my knee was a bit sore (thanks to the tightness), not too bad. I stretched it out and things are good!

Still, I feel rather gross and bloated this morning, and ... Wed, 17 Apr 2013 09:55:50 EST The morning after. Last night sleep was elusive. My family was in pain - how could I sleep? But it eventually came, and I woke up to a clear sky filled with sun. And the promise of a community coming out in support, running, gathering together, and remembering that we are stronger than those who hide behind anonymity.

So today I will run. Tue, 16 Apr 2013 08:23:46 EST Boston Marathon Day!!! First, a weekend recap:

Took 3 classes on Saturday (Active, which was step-ish, Core and Power (which are both weights classes). Felt great, though the knee is a bit sore - Active probably wasn't the best decision there. Food-wise my day was okay. A little light, because I just wasn't in the mood for anything I had available.

Sunday I went into the city and cheered on some friends running the BAA 5K in the morning. Then I walked/ran a 5K with a friend in the afternoon. ... Mon, 15 Apr 2013 08:44:59 EST Rainy Friday Given my knee pain this week, I was attempting to convince myself not to run tonight - and was losing. Well, the weather took care of it. Thank you, Mother Nature. It's nasty out!

Anyway, no workout today. I did get some boxing and strength training in last night. Felt pretty good. Strength training will be key over the next few weeks.

Dinner last night was great. I had chicken cut very thinly, and fresh pineapple. So I "breaded" the chicken in almond meal, cooked it up... Fri, 12 Apr 2013 13:32:29 EST The cheat day... The day each round of BLC ends, I release the reins a bit. It's the day I have that thing I've been craving, and last night it was pizza. It's great because I don't feel guilty, I get that little bit of "naughty" and I'm back at it the next morning! These days, though, I do pay for it a bit... my body doesn't much like the wheat and cheese in a pizza, and it tells me so.

I also ran last night, though "run" might be stretching it. My legs are still sore from this past weekend's 12 ... Thu, 11 Apr 2013 10:38:26 EST And then came the busy season... BLC 21 ends today. It has been a good round. Personally, I had great success not only on the scale (dropped a little over 9 pounds) but in how I feel and look. For the most part I have stuck to eating clean, I have been running, going to PT faithfully, lifting, and having a great time!

But we have 56 days between now and the beginning of round 22, and while I have a TON to do to get ready for next round, I also need a break and so am not running an interim challenge.

Wh... Wed, 10 Apr 2013 08:52:45 EST On My Mind | Taking Care of Our Kids... This has been rolling around in my head for some time now. So bear with me, please...

We all know that we cannot control the actions of other adults. Not only is it nearly impossible, it's rude and uncalled for. We CAN, however, control the actions of our children (whether biologically ours or those in our care for a time). In fact, it's our responsibility to do so!

Given this, why do I constantly see things like "I won't force my kids to eat healthy. Just because I'm o... Go read this week's Nerd Fitness blog:

/02/25/the-20-second-challenge/

Now... what are you doing this week that scares you? Find something! Do it!

Me? I'm giving winter hiking a shot by going after not one but TWO 4000+ footers on Saturday with TRACYTRIS. Yup. Yikes! But I said "sure!" before I had time to think about the scary cold-elevation-ice-climbing-oh-my-god-I'm-
gonna-fail!

345 Mon, 25 Feb 2013 12:27:38 EST BLC 21 So Wednesday marked the beginning of BLC 21. The start of a round is always chaotic as we're getting new folks situated, explaining changes to our returning people, all while following our own progress. And my level of effort is nothing compared to ADMIN!

Anyway, we have survived and are getting into a groove, so I got to think about what I really want out of this round. Last round I made little progress thanks to me allowing setbacks to get in my way. Not gonna happen this round. ... Fri, 18 Jan 2013 09:38:09 EST Getting creative with meals Something that many people struggle with when eating healthy is making meals interesting. I know, I get it. I love rich sauces, too. And cheese. But there are so many other options out there!

Words of advice: don't be afraid! What is the absolute worst thing that can happen if you experiment with dinner? It sucks and you eat a salad, right? I mean seriously, if a meal is lousy it's not the end of the world. So get creative! try things that sound good. Taste and alter as you go alo... Mon, 7 Jan 2013 08:21:16 EST Goodbye, 2012. You were everything I hoped for... There are people in my life saying "nothing good" happened in 2012. You know what? I feel sorry for them. They are so caught in the negative that they can't see the positive (and as a note, that makes people you met in 2012 feel really, really put down...)

You know what? My 2012 rocked! Did I meet every goal? Nope. But I met some. And I did things I never would have dreamed of!

500 miles run? Check! Even with taking the last 2 months of the year nearly completely off fr... Mon, 31 Dec 2012 12:04:53 EST NOT an excuse to slack! I have had 2 real surgeries in my life. Both were followed by significant weight gain. The first was when I first lost weight on Spark and was at 185 for the first time in years. I was recovering for a while because it involved my abdomen and that stuff HURTS! And I went back up to 200ish.

The second was knee surgery and not even major but I ended up going up to 230 after that one.

Well, it looks like #3 will be in the next couple weeks. Knee surgery (other knee) that i... Mon, 3 Dec 2012 11:07:33 EST We all can make a difference The place I get my coffee in the morning recently changed managers. The new manager is a guy about my age who without fail every time I go in manages to say something to make me smile. Flattery? Perhaps. Flirting? Maybe. It doesn't matter. Every morning I go in there I leave smiling.

I wish more people understood how this works. We have such an ability to make others feel great about themselves. What we say has such an impact on people.

Of course, it reminds me of this... Thu, 8 Nov 2012 09:44:30 EST What would you do? So, I'm registered for a half marathon on Sunday. It's my home course, it's admittedly BORING (it's a double loop, flat, on city streets) and the only reason I registered was to have 2 in 14 days to qualify for the Half Fanatics.

Problem is, I'm really not looking forward to it. In fact, I'm kinda dreading it. :( I hate that feeling! I'm not sure what to do about it, either. In addition, I'm nursing some annoying aches. Part of me says that I should skip it. After all, I run becaus... I have to start out by saying if you have ever considered running a Divas race DO IT! They run an awesome race! Everything was so easy and well coordinated! It also helped that it was a great course! Interesting, some slight hills but nothing crazy and TONS of support the whole way.

My weekend started Friday night by sitting in traffic for hours! :) But I ha... Tue, 9 Oct 2012 12:39:36 EST What's your October plan? It's October 1st. Around here it really heralds fall in a big way, and the leaves obliged nicely this weekend by turning colors almost overnight. There are pumpkins everywhere, nights are seeing near-freezing temps and boots are the fashion-du-jour.

For me it also starts the easiest weight-loss period of the year. Life takes on a calmer bent and I find I can focus on myself.

It's also 3 months from New Year's. It's a great time to look back and reflect on what we'd plan... Mon, 1 Oct 2012 10:13:57 EST What's in a number? I asked my team today in their weekend challenge to talk about what their ultimate goal weight meant to/for them.

This is something I struggle with a fair amount. There's the number the doctor's chart says I should weigh (114-127), the number the BMI says I should be (108-145), what that crazy height calculation says I should be (120), what my friends say I should be (150)... where does it end?

My heart would love to see 120. And anyone who knows me IRL would laugh them... Fri, 21 Sep 2012 18:10:25 EST I never knew life could be this fun... Two years ago if you had asked me what my ideal weekend looked like it would have involved movies, going out to dinner, and lots of time curled up with a good book.
