Wed, 13 Jan 2016 13:55:06 EST Part 1: The Decision to Have Weight Loss Surgery http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6066891 I've decided to write a series of blog posts on my weight loss surgery journey to get my old Spark Friends caught up on what I've been doing over the past year and a half and to help inform people about the weight loss surgery process. So here is Part 1:

On the morning of July 7, 2014, I weighed myself and tipped the scale at 260 pounds. 260 pound! That was exactly 10 pounds lower than my highest ever weight of 270. In November 2009, I began a SparkJourney that allowed me to lose 9... Mon, 11 Jan 2016 17:01:48 EST Return to SparkPeople http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=6063964 Hi everyone! I hope some of my old friends are still around. I have decided to return to SparkPeople to hold myself accountable, track my exercise, get some support and motivation, and hopefully help some people out as I work to maintain my weight, post-weight loss surgery. I posted a big update on my main Spark Page explaining my most recent weight loss journey, as well as all new pics on my Spark Page and in my gallery. I'm excited to start tracking down my old friends and find some new one... Fri, 8 Jan 2016 10:27:19 EST Elbow Update http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5508825 Sorry it's been so long since I last blogged. It became very challenging to type after they put a full cast on my right arm form my broken elbow last Monday. As I had previously posted, I hurt my elbow on a week ago Sunday at my first Roller Derby boot camp. I went to work on Monday, but ended up seeing my doctor in the late afternoon. She was immediately in a panic about it and had three of her nurses calling all around the area, trying to find a place I could get x-rays and see an orthopedi... Wed, 9 Oct 2013 10:28:01 EST Derby Damage http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5500089 Well, last night was my first night of Roller Derby Boot Camp and it didn't go so well. I managed to really hurt my elbow... twice! On two separate occasions, I fell backwards and stupidly tried to catch myself with my right arm and stubbed/hyper-extended my elbow. After the first time, I kept going and just babied it. After the second time it was clear I needed to stop. So I ended up just sitting on the sidelines and watching the rest of the practice.

My right arm is fairly usele... Mon, 30 Sep 2013 09:16:38 EST Rough Day http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5497737 Yesterday was a hard day for me. It was the one year anniversary of my 16-year-old niece's suicide. I decided to take the day off work, because I didn't know how functional I would be with that weighing on my mind all day. It was supposed to be a fast day for 5:2, but it's nearly impossible for me to fast while I'm at home (the reason I fast on work days in the first place).

I decided to swap my fast day to today and I'm proud to report that, despite my compromised emotional state,... Fri, 27 Sep 2013 12:03:36 EST Down 40 Pounds! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5495058 Well, it's official! I have lost over 40 pounds since returning to SparkPeople on April 30. I'm now down 69 pounds from my highest weight when I began my first SparkJourney. And I'm only six tenths of a pound from Onederland! I fully expect to unofficially see Onederland tomorrow morning, but it won't be official until my 5-Month weigh-in on Monday.

I can't tell you how happy I am with the progress I've made. If you count out that one terrible week in August where I went way off tr... Tue, 24 Sep 2013 15:46:23 EST A Little Short http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5493753 Well, it looks like I'm going to come up a bit short of Onederland in tomorrow's official weigh-in. I'm okay with that, because I wasn't really expecting to make it to Onederland until next week's 5-Month weigh-in anyway. However, I think it's a real possibility that I will reach another big milestone tomorrow. I will reach the 40 pounds lost mark on my current SparkJourney.

When I returned to SparkPeople on April 30, I weighed in at 241 pounds. As of this morning, I was down to 20... Mon, 23 Sep 2013 11:32:54 EST Week 20 Weigh-in (with bonus pics!) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5488160 Well, I reached my goal of 203 this week. In fact, I weighed in at 202.6! I don't know if I can pull another big week and lose those last 2.6 pounds to make it into Onederland by next week's weigh-in, but I will DEFINITELY make it to Onederland in time for my 5-Month weigh-in on the 30th!

Today was also my weigh-out for my current round of DietBets, which means I had to take my weigh-out photos. I've decided to go ahead and share them with you guys, because I am really happy with t... Tue, 17 Sep 2013 11:00:40 EST So close! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5487001 Tomorrow is my official weekly SparkPeople weigh-in as well as my weigh-out for my current round of DietBets. I had hoped to get down to 203 for a loss of 2.4 pounds this week. As of this morning I met that goal and I still have a day to go! And today is a fast day so I have to think I'll at least drop a couple tenths of a pound just from water weight.

If I end up under 203 tomorrow, I don't know if I am going to be able to resist hoping I make Onederland by next week's weigh-in. S... Mon, 16 Sep 2013 09:01:10 EST Jillian Michaels DietBet! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5482539 I was super psyched this morning to find out that Jillian Michaels is sponsoring a DietBet that begins on Sept 24! If you have been curious about DietBets from reading my blog posts and you are a fan of Jillian Michaels and The Biggest Loser, this would be a GREAT Bet for you to join.

I've posted about DietBets many times in the past, but here's a brief reminder of what they're all about. DietBets are a way for you to win money by losing weight. You pay the Bet amount (usually $25-... Wed, 11 Sep 2013 09:56:55 EST Pushing Through to Onederland http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5481493 Last summer I briefly worked on my second SparkJourney. In the months following my surgery I had gained 50 of the 90 pounds I'd lost on my first SparkJourney and since I was finally recovered by late spring, I decided to start a new SparkJourney. I was going strong for about three months and then I completely lost my motivation. The lowest weight I got down to on that second Journey was 205.4 on August 13th.

Well, at my official weekly weigh-in this morning, I weighed exactly 205.4... Tue, 10 Sep 2013 10:05:37 EST Back from Vacation http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5480465 I got home from vacation on Saturday and today is my first day back at work. I am happy to report that I did fairly well over vacation. I wasn't 100% perfect with my food. I overate two days. I also wasn't 100% perfect with my strength training. I missed one lower body and one upper body workout. I was, however, perfect with my cardio! I did the treadmill three times at my parents' house, did my bike before I left for vacation last Saturday, went to the satellite YMCA location near my parents... Mon, 9 Sep 2013 10:59:23 EST 10 Days In http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5470697 Yesterday was Day 10 of my new streak. It was especially rough because it was a fast day and by early afternoon I was STARVING. I managed to fight off the urge to go to the campus book store and buy food. And I fought off the urge to try to convince Dan to let me order pizza or go out to dinner instead of having the 500 calorie dinner we'd planned. Then I fought off the urge to eat a huge bowl of ice cream after dinner. Then I made it to bed, having stuck to the original plan all day.
<... Fri, 30 Aug 2013 10:03:15 EST C25k Progess http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5468830 I mentioned it briefly in yesterday's blog, but I thought maybe I should make a separate post about it. I started Couch to 5k back at the beginning of June. It's theoretically a 9-week program, but it's turning out to be more of a 3-month program for me this time around.

I've completed C25k twice in the past on both of my previous SparkJourneys. Both times it took me longer than 9 weeks, but it's never taken me THIS long. I've always spread Weeks 5 and 6 our over about 5 weeks. Bot... Wed, 28 Aug 2013 11:08:30 EST Down 6.2 Pounds! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5467653 I did it! I managed to lose all 5 pounds I had gained the week before last. At last week's weigh-in I had jumped back up to 215 pounds, but now I am down to 208.8. That means I lost the 5 pounds I'd gained plus another 1.2 pounds! I am super psyched!

I am still a long way from being caught up to my 1% per week challenge. I'd fallen behind with that plateau back in July and fell even more behind with the weight gain last week. I was supposed to be down to 203.1 this week. I'm over 5... Tue, 27 Aug 2013 09:14:41 EST Back in the Groove http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5466557 Well, I think I'm ready to say that I am officially back in the groove. Today will make Day 7 of my new streak. Since last Tuesday I have stayed on point with all of my nutrition and exercise. I'm back to doing cardio 5 times a week and ST 6 times a week. I've actually started moving forward in my C25k program again (was stuck on "Week 6" for several weeks) and I start Week 8 tomorrow. I've been hitting my deficit target every day. Even on my "over day" last week, I managed a 1000 calorie def... Mon, 26 Aug 2013 09:12:52 EST Up 5 Pounds http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5463281 Well, as you guys may have guessed from my prolonged absence, I fell off the wagon again last week just after posting my "Day 1" blog about starting a new streak. I posted that entry on Wednesday and made it through the rest of the day as planned, so I actually made it two days into the streak. But on Thursday, everything fell apart again. I felt woosie and feverish at work Thursday morning so I decided to leave work only a couple of hours in. Thursday, as always, was my scheduled fast day. B... Thu, 22 Aug 2013 16:46:50 EST Day 1 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5455022 After my last blog about my 100 Days on My Streak, things went way down hill. I made it through day 101 okay, but everything fell apart on Friday. My husband and I had tickets to go to the PGA Championship, which I was SUPER excited about (yes, I love golf). I literally bought those tickets the day they went on sale for "early birds" who had registered online far enough in advance. We got up dark and early Friday morning so we could make it out to the course for the earliest tee times. I chec... Wed, 14 Aug 2013 11:53:46 EST 100 Days of My Streak http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5448755 When I began my current SparkJourney, I guestimated that it would take roughly 300 days to reach my goal. I am now 1/3 of the way through. Yesterday was the 100th day of My Streak. For those of you who are new to my blogs, "My Streak" isn't as simple as a regular fitness streak. Basically, My Streak boils down to me making it to the end of each day feeling like I did everything I could do in my Journey for THAT DAY and going to bed proud of my accomplishments. Usually this means doing my sche... Thu, 8 Aug 2013 11:49:22 EST My Rant About Weight Loss Ignorance http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5447536 Is weight loss really that complicated? I feel like, over the past 4 years, I've explained it 100 times. All long-term weight loss boils down to calories in versus calories out. There are a million different things you can do to effect the numbers on either side of that equation, but the equation remains the same. In order to lose actual weight (not water weight) you need to consume fewer calories than you burn. Period.

Now, don't get me wrong. There are a lot of complicating facto... Wed, 7 Aug 2013 11:07:51 EST DietBet Weigh-in Pics http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5446252 I wasn't going to post any progress pics until after I was under 200 pounds, but today I had to take weigh-out photos for my 5 DietBets (I won!). The site keeps all of your weigh-in and weigh-out photos on file (not viewable by the public). So I was browsing through all of them and I decided to pull up today's photo along side my initial weigh-in photo for my first DietBet back on April 30 (the day I returned to SparkPeople). I was super psyched to see quite a big difference and I decided I w... Deal with it!

Tonight I am very excited to be going to an info session for our local roller derby league. I've been interested in roller derby since my first SparkJourney. In fact, I was even signed up to do the league's pre-season workshops back in 2011, but they started in September and I ended up having my surgery in August. If you've read my SparkPage and old blogs or been a friend of mine for a while, you'll know that my surgery put me comp... Wed, 31 Jul 2013 09:13:44 EST What the what?!??! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5438324 As I posted yesterday, today was my official weigh-in for both Week 13 and Month 3 of my current SparkJourney. I had unofficially weighed in yesterday at 213.6 and was hoping to drop the 0.6 pounds for this morning so I could weigh in at 213. Well, much to my shock and amazement, this morning when I stood on the scale, it read 212.0! I even weighed myself a couple of times, picking up a heavy bottle of mouthwash and then setting it back down again to make absolutely sure. I don't know how th... Tue, 30 Jul 2013 09:12:58 EST Big Day Tomorrow http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5437327 Tomorrow is a big day for me. It's my 3 Month weigh-in and my 13 Week weigh-in. I am really really hoping to see 213.0 on the scale. That would mean a 28 pound loss so far on this most recent SparkJourney and 1/3 of the way to my goal from my start weight back on April 30. It would also mean I only have to lose another 1.5 pounds by next Tuesday in order to win my current round of DietBets. And, finally, it would put me that much closer to "catching up" to my 1% per week goal after my plateau... Mon, 29 Jul 2013 12:13:34 EST Catching Up? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5431612 Because of the plateau I just broke through (hopefully?) I've fallen a bit behind on my 1% per week goal. As of yesterday's official weigh-in, I was supposed to be at 213.6 pounds, but I weighed in at 215.2. So I was 1.6 pounds off my goal. However, things really seem to be moving on the scale finally and this morning I was unofficially down to 214.6. If I can keep this up, I am hoping that I can catch back up to my 1% goal in the next few weeks. I'd love to do that, because if I can get back... Wed, 24 Jul 2013 09:23:19 EST 25 Pounds Down! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5430313 It's official! I've lost over 25 pounds since returning to SparkPeople 12 weeks ago!

As I posted yesterday, the scale finally relented and started to move again. As of my official weigh-in this morning, I was down 2.4 pounds for Week 12. This was such a huge relief after my Week 10 and 11 weigh-ins where the scale refused to budge. Hopefully I am well and truly through that plateau!

I want to thank all of you who encouraged and pushed me through those bleak days when it ... Tue, 23 Jul 2013 08:42:09 EST Scale Actually Moving? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5429314 I *think* the scale might be actually moving again! After VERY small losses the past two weeks, the scale hadn't moved much since my official weigh-in on Tuesday until yesterday morning. Then I was down 0.8 pounds (unofficially) and was feeling hopeful I might lose at least a pound this week. I'd even kind of psyched myself up to be content with small losses and resigned myself to the fact that I'd likely lose my current round of DietBets. But what I wasn't factoring in was that I was pretty ... Mon, 22 Jul 2013 11:40:21 EST What I Do http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5424140 I very much appreciated all of the responses to yesterday's blog and the suggestions for how to potentially break my plateau, but it was clear from some of the comments that a lot of you don't know what my current routine actually consists of, so I thought I would write it all out in a single blog entry.

Nutrition
I currently am doing the 5:2 Diet, which consists of fasting two non-consecutive days a week. On Fast days I am only allowed a total of 500 calories, which I typical... Wed, 17 Jul 2013 11:44:41 EST Another Bad Weigh-in http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5422865 Despite my comments in yesterday's blog, I stuck to my streak for yet another day. I am up to 77 days in a row of fasting on my designated fast days, staying in my calorie ranges the other 5 days a week, doing my strength training on the designated days (6 days a week), and doing cardio for at least 45 minutes 5 days a week. Over the last seven days I have had a calorie deficit of 8974 calories. The equivalent of 2.65 pounds. This morning was my official weigh-in and I had lost a whopping ONE... Tue, 16 Jul 2013 09:52:43 EST Is the Romance Dead? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5421793 I don't really know how to explain this, but right now I am feeling kind of "done" with this whole process. Like I am just prolonging the inevitable right now by trying to continue to stick to My Streak. You know how when you first start dating someone and it's super exciting and you want to spend every waking moment with that person? Then you gradually got to know them better and spend time with them and it just becomes clear that it's not going to end up really going anywhere long term. So ... Mon, 15 Jul 2013 12:04:18 EST Change of Plans? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5419209 The plateau I hit this past week has got me reevaluating my current plan. I feel fairly sure that the problem right now is that my calorie deficit is just too high. I had been aiming for a 1000 calorie deficit on non-fast days and an 1800 calorie deficit on fast days, for a total weekly deficit of 8600. But as I mentioned in Tuesday's blog, my deficit last week was well over 10000. And even though I've made a concious effort this week to eat towards the higher end of my calorie range, I'm alr... Fri, 12 Jul 2013 20:17:23 EST Crying at the Grocery Store http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5416511 Well, yesterday was a rough day. We all have them. Especially on a journey like this. I ended up crying in the grocery store last night.

As I blogged about yesterday, my weigh-in did not go as well as I had hoped. I came in over my target for the first time in 10 weeks and I didn't cope with that very well. I had been steadily losing weight like a machine, especially in the past 5-6 weeks. So it was a big blow to only lose 1.4 pounds where I'd been losing 2.0 to 2.4 pounds per week... Wed, 10 Jul 2013 09:27:01 EST Disappointing Weigh-In http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5415259 Well, this morning was my official Week 10 weigh-in for SparkPeople and for the first time so far, I didn't reach my target. Based on my 1% per week chart, I should have been down to 218.0 pounds today, but I was only down to 218.6, the same weight I've been since my unofficial weigh-in last Thursday. I can't imagine that I've actually lost NO weight in all that time, because my calorie deficits have been quite high, so I'm hoping I'm still just retaining some water weight from higher-than-no... Tue, 9 Jul 2013 08:45:28 EST My Streak is Still Alive! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5414400 Well, I stuck to the plan all weekend at my parents' house and I am happy to report that My Streak of diet and exercise is still going! Today will be day 70 so long as I continue my fast until dinner time and eat my allotted 500 calories then do my lower body strength training. I am super psyched that I was able to keep it going even while I traveled. Now I have set a goal of making it to day 100! That would put me in mid August. I don't anticipate any events or visits between now and then th... Mon, 8 Jul 2013 13:20:59 EST Late Night Blog http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5411945 Just wanted to post a really quick blog and let you all know that things are going as planned so far with my trip to my parents' house. I did my treadmill yesterday morning before we left and fasted all day yesterday until dinner with my parents. Today was my cardio rest day, but I got my lower body ST done and stayed well within my calorie range. Tomorrow may be more of a challenge because it's shaping up to be a fairly busy day and I need to fit in my treadmill and upper body ST. Will post ... Fri, 5 Jul 2013 23:11:28 EST New Milestones http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5409782 On my first two SparkJourneys, I kept a sort of checklist of weight-related milestones based on my original starting weight of 270 pounds. I thought about going back and using that same list moving forward, but I've decided that this journey, my FINAL journey, deserves it's own list of milestones to look forward to along the way.

You can see my old list of milestones here:
www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_jo
urnal_individual.asp?blog_id=4974862

But ... Wed, 3 Jul 2013 15:24:39 EST Plan for the Holiday http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5408486 Well, a couple of weeks ago, I blogged about the potential for breaking My Streak this weekend when I go to my parents' house. However, I think I've come up with a plan that will allow me to keep My Streak alive!

I will be driving down to my parents' on Thursday and returning on Sunday. My usual schedule for those days would be:

Thursday: Fast Day, cardio and ST rest day
Friday: C25k and lower body ST
Saturday: Bike and upper body ST
Sunday: C25k and core ... Mon, 1 Jul 2013 08:24:15 EST 20 Pounds in 2 Months! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5406779 I had hoped to blog about this earlier today, but things got pretty busy. Today was my 2 month weigh-in and I'm down over 20 pounds already! I am really really psyched to have lost almost 10 pounds in my second month. Looking back at the logs from my last two SparkJourneys, I started out strong with over a 10 pounds loss in the first month but only lost a little over 6 pounds in the second month. This time around I have been killing it. Hopefully I can keep it up in month 3! Sun, 30 Jun 2013 22:07:20 EST Looking Thinner? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5404482 I feel like I'm actually starting to look thinner now. When I do my DietBets, I have to take a full-body photo of myself on the scale for my weigh-ins and weigh outs. I weighed in for my first DietBet on April 30 and weighed in for my second round of DietBets on June 2. During that period I had lost 10.6 pounds and I could see even the tiniest bit of difference between my weigh-in photos from the two sets of Bets. However, I have my weigh-out for my current round of Bets coming up on Tuesday ... Fri, 28 Jun 2013 10:32:29 EST Australian Onederland http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5403284 I watch a LOT of Biggest Loser Australia. Unlike here in the US, their show is on 4-5 nights a week, so a season is over 70 episodes. I always watch them on my laptop while I'm working out. It takes a bit to get used to the accents, some of the words they use (they call all squash "pumpkin" and peppers "capsican"), the strange foods they eat (their Temptations are all vegemite and lamingtons instead of peanut butter and cupcakes), and the most difficult of all to adjust to: the weight convers... Thu, 27 Jun 2013 09:02:23 EST Happy Day http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5402335 Today is officially one of the happiest days of my life. DOMA had been ruled unconstitutional on the basis of equal protection. This is a day I have prayed for for 17 years. I'm having trouble even coming up with the words to describe what I am feeling right now. Marriage Equality has been by far the most important legal/political issue in my adult life. The fight isn't over yet, but today is such a monumental victory. Thinking about the fact that my nephews and niece will now grow up in a wo... Wed, 26 Jun 2013 11:19:58 EST C25k, Week 4! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5399962 Well, the dreaded Week 4 is finally upon me. I did the first workout last night and, as I fully expected, it was HARD. Even though I'd been doing an extra 3 minute run interval at the end of my Week 3 workouts, I was not fully prepared for the 5 minute runs of Week 4. And it's not just the longer runs in Week 4, it's the shorter walks. In Week 3, your 3 minute runs are followed by 3 minute walks. In Week 4 your 3 minute runs are followed by 90 second walks and your 5 minute runs are only foll... Mon, 24 Jun 2013 09:10:39 EST
