Well, I did it!! I ran the SF Marathon with a 28 minute improvement over my Big Sur time. My training over the past 3 months went really well without any interruptions. I wasn't incorporating speedwork, but I was running lots of hills and continuing to increase my monthly mileage (ending at 130 miles)... Tue, 28 Jul 2009 15:02:26 EST My first 26.2 mile marathon distance run. http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2010743 I registered for the Big Sur Marathon relay months ago with some of my running friends. At the time I wanted to run the third leg of the race because it's the most challenging and the most scenic. As the race approached and I continued to push my distances further and further I began to think about runnining the first leg instead so that I could continue and experience the entire course. Bart Yasso is quoted as saying "If we were told that we could run only one marathon in our lifetime, Bi... Mon, 27 Apr 2009 14:24:35 EST All About Running http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=1616263 I haven't written here since last spring. Yikes! Lots to catch up on. The top of my left foot was hurting after those two spring 5Ks. Not sure if I mentioned that because it wasn't exactly a running injury. A pair of new street shoes I bought was buckled too tightly and I think it caused some tendonitis. The top of that foot bugged me all summer. Fortunately it's gone now, but I haven't really done any speedwork this year because of nagging aches like that one.

My last blog ... Thu, 18 Dec 2008 20:17:59 EST New 5K PR and 1st Place!!! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=1122015 I did it!! Just barely but I did it! Can you see the little numbers in the picture? 25:58!! My goal was set at 25:59. Thank God for GPS because that little screen telling me I was falling behind in the last mile was really pushing me. It was an out and back course and the first mile had some downhills so I knew the last mile would be tough uphill. I passed a girl in my age group somewhere around that last uphill and I ended up getting 1st place in my age group! My mile splits were 8:1... Sat, 5 Apr 2008 15:49:09 EST Mermaid Run 5K http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=1110593 I ran the Mermaid Run yesterday and I am so glad I did. It was an all women race which I've never experienced before. I was racing this one for the girly t-shirt and the post race pancake breakfast. I had no idea that racing with only women would make such a big difference. When I went to line up at the starting line there was a ton of room up in front. I think most women are used to letting the men line up in front so there just weren't many people up there. So I went up to about the ... Mon, 31 Mar 2008 22:49:11 EST Theodyssey http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=1077412 For the past couple of years I've been deeply involved with a ministry called Theodyssey. The lessons I've learned there have been extremely valuable. They've even helped me with my running. I was cleaning off my desk today and came across a 2007 calendar from theodysseygroup. As I read over the ideas on each month, it brought back to mind so much of what I've learned and how it's changed the way I think and live. Instead of just tossing it in the recycle bin, I decided to copy the 12 id... Sat, 15 Mar 2008 23:41:18 EST Turkey Trot http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=836591 Last year, 5 weeks after starting Couch to 5K, I ran my first 5K at the Turkey Trot. This summer I had the bright idea of starting my kids on the Couch to 5K to run the Turkey Trot. Fortunately, my husband said he'd join us in the training because looking back I never could have done it without him. We ran together as a family 3x/week the entire three months leading up to the Turkey Trot. Even with our flexible schedules being self-employed and homeschooled, that was no simple feat. Chal... Fri, 23 Nov 2007 14:00:32 EST I ran my first half marathon today!! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=786306 A year ago I wasn't a runner. I tried running on the treadmill at the gym once or twice, but it was hard and definitely not fun. That all changed last year at the Rock 'N Roll Half Marathon. I only went to cheer for my brother-in-law Gordon at the finish line. I was watching all the finishers come in and it brought me to tears. I thought to myself, "I want to do that." The strong and powerful running bug bit me that day. I started running the very next week with the Couch to 5K program... Sun, 14 Oct 2007 17:48:08 EST Last run before my half marathon. http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=784096 Yesterday was my last run before my half marathon. Unfortunately things haven't been going very well at all. I'm so glad I was able to experience that great 10.5 mile run that I wrote about in my last entry because my runs have been pretty rough since then. A day or two after that long run I started to feel my old symptoms that I had six months ago from a rotated pelvis. Things got worse quickly so I saw my chiropractor a few days before a planned 12 mile run. He fixed me up enough so th... Fri, 12 Oct 2007 15:13:51 EST What a wonderful Maker!! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=746888 That's what was going through my mind this morning during the last mile of my longest run to date! What a wonderful Maker to design my body to release those oh so wonderful endorphins when I need them most. Today I ran 10.5 miles! I ran 9 miles last June and spent the next couple of months dealing with ITBS which meant reducing my mileage. :( It was extremely challenging to keep a posistive attitude during that time. If it had been easy for me to hit 10 miles, I probably wouldn't have bee... Sat, 15 Sep 2007 19:48:23 EST June http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=678235 Better late than never, here's my June fitness and nutrition recap. Yes, June. July will come later.

I tracked my food 12/30 days averaging 1651 calories and my weight stayed between 117-119 most days. In the middle of the month my BF% dipped down to 18.8 for the first time during a morning weigh in. Like my weight, I only keep track of the number I see first thing in the morning. In the evening, weight goes up and BF% goes down.

I ran 67.7 miles for the month, mo... Mon, 30 Jul 2007 16:26:52 EST May update http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=622821 Here we are 3 weeks into June and I never posted an update about May.

With the 10K at the end of the month to motivate me, staying on track with fitness was pretty easy. I ran 61 miles total for the month. 13 more than I did in April. I didn't check my 1 mile time, but my 5K time was 26:21 (8:29/mile) and my 10K time was 54:23 (8:45/mile). Next time I race a 5K I'm going to aim for 25:00 and my 1 mile goal for this summer is 7:00.

It was also a really good month fo... Mon, 25 Jun 2007 13:56:57 EST My First 10K http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=583742 I did it! I finally raced my first 10K. My last race was a 5K on New Years Day and I had planned to race my first 10K back in February, but had to change the plan after I began having issues with my hip. This time my hip was just fine throughout the training and the race.
The race was about 20 minutes from home so I got there about 45 minutes early. I picked up my goodie bag, t-shirt, and bib and dropped it off at the car, then did a slow warm-up jog for 7 minutes, waited in line ... Thu, 31 May 2007 02:43:59 EST April http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=542766 All has gone well and I'm back to where I was before my break 3 months ago. I think I'm maintaining alignment in my pelvis because my hip pain has not returned. I ran 49 miles in April. My last long run was 6 miles. My last tempo run was 3.5 miles in 31:28(8:59/mile). I'm registered for my first 10K on May 26th. For now my goal is 55:55.
Still maintaining my weight around 119-120 although I haven't tracked my food for a couple of weeks. I can hardly believe it's been almost... Thu, 3 May 2007 01:49:24 EST March recap http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=496931 Now that I'm running again, I'm back on track with healthy habits. I tracked my food for 21 days in March and am currently maintaining my weight at 119. I burned 4485 calories from exercise, mostly by running a total of 33 miles for the month. I started off slowly since I only ran a total of 2 miles in February. I'm up to 4 miles now, which is where I was at the end of 2006. I had 4 chiropractic adjustments in March before my re-exam where he said I'm 100% improved and that I've "graduat... Tue, 3 Apr 2007 15:13:47 EST (no title) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=475818 I had a great run yesterday! It was only 2.5 miles, but my whole body felt perfect for the first time in over two months! Since I started seeing the chiropractor I've been doing a short easy run 3x/week without any joint pain, but my hip flexor was continuing to give me grief. It was actually the most sore after the first run after the first adjustment. He said that was because I had to retrain the muscles there to work properly and that that would be the last pain to go away. I'm so hap... Tue, 20 Mar 2007 17:06:08 EST Dr. Phillips is my new best friend! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=452538 I can hardly believe it, but I actually ran without pain yesterday. I ran on the grass again for 25 minutes this time. My hip flexor was achy afterward, but my joints felt great! Nothing like last week when it hurt the minute I started running. I've gone from someone who said, "I'll never go to a chiropractor," to someone who says, "My only regret is that I didn't go sooner." The adjustment didn't hurt at all. The next day my sacrum was a little achy, but he expected that and had given ... Sun, 4 Mar 2007 17:00:00 EST (no title) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=451196 This blog is long overdue for an update. My recovery has gone so slowly. I spent almost the entire month of February doing no exercise at all except stretching. It took over a week of rest for the pain to go away, but it came right back just with extended periods of walking, like grocery shopping. After two weeks most days were painfree unless I did things like wearing heels, walking downhill, or jumping. After a month those activities felt pretty good so I decided to try running on gras... It took me 7 weeks and a total deficit of 17776 calories to lose 4.2 pounds. That deficit should have worked out to 5 pounds lost, but I'll bet I gained a pound of muscle in that time with all the training I've been doing. Crazy thing is I think I'm too small now. 117 looks different on me than it did last year now that my body composition has changed.
<B... I lost another pound this week. My body fat is down to 19.1% I'm amazed that it's gone down 3% since I started running almost 3 months ago. I think I still need more calories if I want to gain muscle. I'll keep it at 1350-1700 for another week and see what happens.

10K Training Week 7
Sun: Stretch & Strengthen, 30 min.
Mon: 5K... At this point I'd rather put on muscle than lose fat. Even with the extra calories, I think I can still reach my goal weight by Valentine's Day. My clothes are so loose lately that I'm reconsidering th... Sun, 14 Jan 2007 17:46:27 EST (no title) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=375782 I had the BEST run this morning!! It was the first time I've run 5 miles and miles 4 and 5 felt so great! I found this great trail of rolling hills about a mile from home, and I took it slow at the start because I wanted to make sure I could go the distance. I finished in 50 minutes. I was so high I wanted to keep going!
Ken, you really think the 10K is ambitious? You, the one who has helped me to aim higher? I've still got a month to go. I can do it! Sat, 13 Jan 2007 18:13:03 EST Goals & Rewards http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=374954 With all the New Year's talk of resolutions and goals I decided to put my goals in writing. I even went so far as to make a chart with pictures of my rewards and post it in my photo gallery. I saw a similar chart in another user's photo gallery and I loved the idea. Yes, I'm goal oriented. Along with future goals, I also included some recently achieved goals. Here's the list of my future goals from the chart:

10K under 60:00 - Reward: Food Scale - Target Date: 2/10/07
... Mon, 1 Jan 2007 20:06:43 EST Happy New Year! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=353547 This year is off to a great start! I ran my 2nd 5K today. It was a small race and I was able to place 5th out of 16 in my age group with a time of 29:19, a new personal best! I shaved 2:48 off my 1st 5K time 6 weeks ago. I passed a lot of people on the 2nd mile and then at the start of the 3rd mile I came up behind a guy wearing a marathon shirt and I just kept running behind him. I was thinking I'd do well running behind him since he's run a marathon and he should pace himself well. B... Mon, 1 Jan 2007 19:28:22 EST (no title) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=351606 Well, the tree is now gone and the workout equipment is back. I will be much better about my strength and cross training in January than I was this month. At least I got all my runs in. This week was:
3 miles
2 miles 18:24 (9:12/mile)
4 miles
The 3 and 4 mile runs were on the road and with a few hills. The 2 mile run was on the track. Mon, 18 Dec 2006 13:17:27 EST (no title) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=341882 I'm getting faster! I ran 3.5 miles today on the track in 33:49. 9:40/mile pace. I don't think I've ever run that far without stopping in my life. My 5K split was 29:57. Last week it was 31:05. Two weeks before that it was 32:07. My goal was to get it under 30 minutes. I did it!!! I can't believe I improved my time so much in just 3 weeks. Sun, 17 Dec 2006 21:15:45 EST (no title) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=338974 About that 5 pound weight gain, I've been keeping an eye on the scale since Saturday and it looks like it was just 3 pounds, not 5. Whew! I don't know where that high number came from, but I never saw it again. It did motivate me to start tracking again, so at least something good came out of it. And even better, it looks like the 3 pounds is mostly muscle because today my BF% was down from 22% (where it's been since May) to 21%. Wed, 13 Dec 2006 13:47:54 EST (no title) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=335816 I finally started some strength and cross training on Friday. Sat, 9 Dec 2006 18:34:34 EST (no title) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=330626 I ran 2.5m in 24:35 today. That's a 9:50/mile pace! I was on the high school track without the baby jogger. I tried out my new Nike+ipod during the run but it wasn't accurate. It said I ran about 2.75m at around an 8:55/mile. That was right out of the box. I probably just need to calibrate it. Sun, 3 Dec 2006 20:31:51 EST (no title) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=329660 I finished off week 6 with a 25 minute run pushing the baby jogger on hills. I was pretty slow going up the hills, but I was still jogging. The next 3 runs are all supposed to be 25 minute runs. I'll do one more tomorrow and then I'm going to switch to Hal Higdon's 10K novice training program. It starts off about where I'm at with 3 runs a week, 2.5m, 2m, and 3m. The day after the race my hip/thigh joints on both sides started to feel achy, but it only lasted about a day. I did the W6D1 walk/run today. The run segments were 5/8/5 so I picked up the pace on the 5s. I'm guessing about a 9:30/mile because I was making it about 100 yards past two laps. I'm getting the Nike+ system this week so I'll have a better idea of my pace, especially off the track. It's a reward for compl... I can't wait for the next one. I guess I was pretty nervous before the race because I couldn't get my oatmeal down in the morning. We got there only a half an hour before the race, but I still had time to pick up my chip, use the bathroom, and warm up. Starting off in a crowd of over 1000 runners was such an awesome feeling I almost cried. I took one short walk break for a few seconds at the 2 mile mark on a hill, but other than that I r... Wed, 15 Nov 2006 02:10:02 EST (no title) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=310603 W4D1 today. I've got a cold, but I'm pressing on. I plan on doing my first 5K in 2 weeks. There's a turkey trot here in town on Thanksgiving morning. I won't be done with the program yet, but even if I have to walk/run the race, I'm sure it'll be fun. Thu, 9 Nov 2006 19:44:22 EST (no title) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=308140 I finished Week 3 today with a 30 minute walk/run. I finally feel like I'm not at the beginning of the program anymore. 6 weeks to go. Tue, 7 Nov 2006 17:09:36 EST (no title) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=306347 I did a 30 minute walk/run today. It was pretty tough to jog uphill with the baby jogger but I kept going. The runs are only 3 minutes at a time this week. Sun, 5 Nov 2006 19:51:03 EST (no title) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=304184 I got a new ipod nano yesterday. DH got it for me as an early bday gift to encourage me in my running efforts. I'm loving it! I uploaded the C25K podcasts and it was so nice to do the intervals without constantly looking at my watch. Today I did W3D1. Thu, 2 Nov 2006 20:03:58 EST (no title) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=302229 The orthopedic doctor was able to reset DD's bone with gentle pressure. She's doing great, enjoying letting people sign her cast.
I finished Week 2 of the C25K today. On the last run/walk interval I ran for 3 minutes instead of 90 seconds. I think Week 3 starts with 3 minutes at a time and I was curious to see how it would feel. So far so good! Tue, 31 Oct 2006 16:54:14 EST (no title) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=300971 About half way into my walk/jog yesterday my daughter fell off her bike and broke her thumb! I was running on a track and it was one of those sandy types so when she went to turn her bike around quickly, it just slid. Fortunately DH was with us. We went home, got ice, and headed to urgent care where she got x-rays. She'll see an orthopedic doctor today to see if he can reset it externally or if she needs surgery. Mon, 30 Oct 2006 11:22:42 EST (no title) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=299047 I picked up my new Nike+ shoes this morning and broke them in right away doing W2D1 while the baby visited with his mom again. My cousin has a baby jogger she's going to let me borrow so now I'll be able to jog with the baby. Where there's a will, there's a way. Fri, 27 Oct 2006 18:46:58 EST (no title) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=296414 30 minute walk/jog today. I finished week 1 of the program. With 8 weeks to go it feels like it will take forever. I hope I don't give up. I bought new running shoes today but I had to special order them. I guess my old shoes will have to do for another week. Tue, 24 Oct 2006 18:30:47 EST (no title) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=294916 I went for a walk/jog today. Same as Friday. I'm trying to follow the Couch-to-5K plan from coolrunning.com. Sun, 22 Oct 2006 22:59:08 EST
