I increased the intensity as the class progressed and I believe I am getting a stronger core. The nerve is still letting me know to take it easy but my body is saying it's getting stronger every day.

244

MARY Thu, 2 Jul 2009 21:20:32 EST Taking it Easy Ain't Easy http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2159336 The water felt so good today. I was so glad to see familiar faces in the water aerobics class. As agreed, I took it very easy, in spite of what I was told to do by our new instructor.

When I arrived about a half-hour early, I used the noodle to float and gently bicycled around the pool. When the new instructor arrived (a little late), we got busy with a few warm-up exercises that I could do comfortably. Tue, 16 Jun 2009 16:16:51 EST ...I Got to Keep on Moving (forward) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2147769 Okay, so on Thursday after my learning about my pinched nerve injury, I pleaded for help from my SparkPeople friends and was gently reminded to stay focused on the big picture: Getting and staying healthy. Prior to the pinched nerve and bursitis setback I had hit my stride towards achieving that goal and believed that nothing was going to "Breaka my Stride" (I love that song).

Well, either because I was moving too fast or was doing too much (probably both), my body has told me to ... Sat, 13 Jun 2009 13:49:22 EST HELP!!! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2143983 I'm so confused! The doctor says to do only what I can and stop when it hurts. That with therapy the nerve will heal with time (2 months). The physical therapist says don't do anything until Tuesday when I'm reassessed for the new PT order I got from the doctor today. No Water, No upper body work, NOTHING! Thu, 11 Jun 2009 21:52:39 EST Adding Insult to Injury :-( http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2140532 I saw the head PT today after my water work, and she's identified the source of my pain as being a pinched nerve at the base of my spine. The burser may be a little inflamed but the back is the primary source.

So, she treated me with heat, stretching, and ice. I still hurt but she thinks we can have me back in business soon (2 or 3 days) with me doing the treatment at home. Well, let's just say the length of my rest is up to my body.

At first I thought I had overworked some muscules and needed to let them rest. This is partially true. Usually I do PT in the afternoon after my water work. But today, the Inaugural National Day of Running, it just had to be different. The primary therapist took me through a series of exercises that had me moaning and groaning; however, she did say my range of motion and leg strengh has improved. So, that was enough to send me to the pool in great spirit... But, no, I decided to follow in the footsteps of one of my Boot Camp teammates.

I was reading the final posts of the boot camp members and ran across a post that mentioned a team that is devoted to fitness challenges. PT advises me not to do any land running yet, but I really want to participate in the Inaugeral National Running Day on Wednesday, June 3. So, I am really feeling it today.

I hope I'm not coming across as a whinner. I'm really pleased with myself for being so physically active to be feeling sore. I do the water aerobics and chat with the folks who come regularly and cheer on the new people. I share with my family meals that are nutritious. So doing the Boot Camp in the privacy of my own home I thought I would be alone with the laptop and Coach Nicole was my ME time.

Today a thought came to me that I'm one of 21, 000+ and that at the same time I was doing the 7-Minute Seated Resista... My upper thigh muscles are looser and stronger (if that makes any sense). Seeing results motivates me to continue on. So, I immediately followed up with the challenge workout, the 6-minute Hips, Glutes, & Thighs Workout; and WHOA!!! those squats let me know there is still a lot more work to do. Then the lunges did the trick, sweat started pouring and the workout b... I did pretty good and stayed within my nutrition ranges. However, the night was very emotional for me and so was the morning when I talked on the phone with my sister in Seattle, WA (I'm in San Bernardino, CA).

I was determined to do the workout for today, the 10-minute Cardio Kickboxing Workout, before going to church this morning. So, I was relieved that my hips weren't pushed to the limit (Ahhhh:-)

Since Pilates is new to me I watched the short introductory video that explained the 7 principles of Pilates. I learned so much about the correct posture, tempo, and the isolation of body movements not involved in the exercise.

One of the exercises included one of my goal exercises: the plank. The challenge for today (go without caffeine) was not really a challenge either because I eliminated caffeine from my diet in March when I began this journey. I went on a herbal cleansing fast for 10 days, and no I did not go without food for 10 days, I'm not crazy. Just the first 3 days of consuming cleansing herbs, lemon water, and fiber capsules. When Coach Nicole began an exercise and said it would be the last one before our cool-down stretch I had just experienced a moment of dread that I wouldn't be able to go on. It's like she knew I was nearing the end of my endurance level.

The focus was on the lower-body, but this workout was much more intense than Monday's that was also for lower-body work. I could feel my upper thigh muscles around my hips scream with each movemen... The "Crunchless Core Workout" was a serious challenge. A few of the exercises are just what the doctor ordered. One of my fitness goals is to be able to do a modified plank. Well this workout should definately prepare me for meeting that goal.

The upper and lower body work we did previously enabled me to support the core work. I actually think I'm a little stronger today than I was last week; which are other goals: More upper body strength and flexi... I finished the boot upper-body 7-minute work out as well as the challenge (wall close-hand push-ups) and I feel so energized.

I also made the decision to train for the June 5th 5K. I'll be running in the pool with a couple other ladies in my senior center water aerobics class. We are so excited and we started training today. Sun, 3 May 2009 01:51:24 EST BOOT CAMP NEWBIE http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=2024350 I've signed up for Coach Nicoles Sweatsuit to Swimsuit Boot Camp that starts this Sunday. Now granted, there have been many Springs that I went all out to look good in a swimsuit. When I read the info a couple of days ago and made the decision to take on the challenge my primary interest was to break the plateau I seemed to be in. Week before last I lost no weight, last week I lost one pound, and when I, with bated breath, weighed myself today, to my surprise and happiness, I am now two pound... Neither have I gained any and that is a very good thing. I've done the work, following my nutrition plan, and exercising. I've even added cardio and strength training exercises this week. I feel really good about what I'm doing and am inspired to keep doing what I'm doing. I've read great articles and have received wonderful support from team members. I'm looking forward to the day when 100 will be the slot in which I can place the metal bar. For now 200 is the slot and the even smaller metal bar slides across the other scaled ruler to 10 then 20 and balances out at 27 (no more 30's 250 ). Last week the smaller number was 28, so this week I was a little disappointed to not have lost my 2 lbs a week goal. The previous wee... I remind myself of this throughout the day when I feel I must strain to do what I'm not capable of doing right now. I would love to drop and give 20 perfect push-ups but I'm just not there yet. Each treasured moment spent with a loved one is more valuable than wealth or fame. I am at the age where friends and loved ones die which permanently eliminates the opportunities to make any more treasured moments playing scrabble, watching a movie together, taking long walks, going fishing, or just "hanging out" as the young folks say.
