While I did not throw all caution to the wind, I did relax a lot on diet habits. I ate a lot more sweets than I normally do and just ate a lot more of the delicious foods available in the US. Most nights, I walked about 2 miles, some nights a rather slow stroll other nigh... Sat, 14 Sep 2013 19:08:06 EST A Fantastic Week!! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5465239 250 pastors from Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico, came together to celebrate their common roots! It was a wonderful time, but quite a logistical challenge! Airport and bus arrivals changed quite frequently, at least two groups experienced border delays, one car break down....so that the last of the attendees arrived around 2 am! Our job was to keep up with this and run to meet whoever was coming in and change directions at the drop of a hat! I t... Sat, 24 Aug 2013 22:02:04 EST Made it to Managua http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5460237 After two long days of traveling, we...my husband, our team leader and a Honduran pastor, made it to Managua this afternoon. We left home at 9 am yesterday, stopped for lunch (yup, I was right about the half avocado!) and got to the church where we spent the night just in time for supper before their worship service.

This morning we were at the border by 8:30 and finished by 9:30, just the routine crossing stuff that takes time. Lunch actually included mixed veggies and grill... Mon, 19 Aug 2013 18:50:56 EST On the road...again...without freggies. http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5458772 This week in the 5% challenge we are challenged to eat and count our freggies. Normally this is not a problem for me at all, as I get between 7 and 9 almost every day. However, in just a few minutes, we're hitting the road again, heading to Nicaragua for a Central American Pastors' Congress (ID card in hand, so no border issues tomorrow!)

I've eaten Nicaraguan food before and I know how many freggies will be served! Maybe half an avocado once a day, maybe fried plantains, but n... Sun, 18 Aug 2013 10:42:29 EST Vacation report http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5449298 This morning, after having been in the US for a month, with all the celebrations and high fat/sugar food involved, with fear and trembling, I stepped on the scales. My goal was simply not to gain weight while there! Goal was accomplished!!! The scale read exactly what it did the day I left for the US! Good times celebrating all the events with family, I enjoyed some of the special foods, like birthday cake, ice cream etc, but in moderation and balanced with some physical activity. Who k... Thu, 8 Aug 2013 21:46:55 EST Mission "Issues" http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5448039 A few days ago, I mentioned on our 5% Challenge board that my husband and I were going to talk to our sending church about the possibility about leaving our current mission. So, I thought I'd write a bit about the circumstances that are leading up to that. We've been with the mission here in Honduras for 10 years, so it's not something that we're doing lightly or quickly. However, "issues" have been building up for 4 years now and at a recent meeting, the leaders of the mission made things... Wed, 7 Aug 2013 20:07:10 EST 5% Challenge Assignment #6 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5433319 List YOUR reasons/excuses on why YOUR diets and exercise plans have not been well executed in the past. OK that might be too long a list, so give 3 or 4 reasons and for each write a strategy that will keep you on track for 8 weeks.

1. The biggest reason why MY diet plan has not worked well in the past is that I want what works for everyone else to work for me! I want to be able to just cut calories, log calories, and follow the “calories in, calories out” idea and lose weight. ... Thu, 25 Jul 2013 16:06:46 EST 5% Challenge Assignment #3 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5433295 Reasons I want to lose weight:
1. Due to chronic pain issues, I need to lose weight to be kind to my joints, my muscles, and the rest of my body. Lower weight will result in less pain.
2. I want to lose weight so that at my next annual exam, all my blood work will be within normal ranges.
3. While I do not particularly wish to look like a model, I would like to look nice in my clothes. No bulges and buttons that don’t quite reach. I want my skirts to be comfortable. <B... Thu, 25 Jul 2013 15:38:13 EST 5% Challenge Assignment #1 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5432457 I'm a few days behind on getting started with the 5% Weight Loss Challenge Assignments. Hopefully, I'll be caught up in a day or two Here is Assignment #1.
I will exercise daily for the 56 days of the challenge, making special effort to establish a strength training program while on the road. I will follow Zone Diet and watch the calories and portion sizes. On my Team page I will record my daily exercise and Living the Good Life Points, and on Saturdays I will weigh in and record it. ... Wed, 24 Jul 2013 22:40:00 EST "God alone knows when we shall see each other again" http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5425608 "then we shall leave it in His hands" (Fiddler on the Roof) Since dropping our son off at college years ago, this quote has been used in our family a lot! We are all comfortable with the knowledge that God has called us to be a missionary family, but by far the hardest sacrifice we have been called to make is being separated from family. The past 4 days were an unexpected time of joy as our son "just happened" to be in the US from N Ireland for a wedding when we were here with his sister,... Thu, 18 Jul 2013 17:41:21 EST Mindful vacationing http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5413592 My husband and I traveled to the US from Honduras on Friday, and as expected eating healthfully has been a challenge! Of course, travel days are always difficult as airport food leaves much to be desired. We left home at 6 am and arrived at our daughter's house about 11 pm. A fruit smoothie before we left home, a quick cup of coffee in the airport, then lunch/supper at the Houston airport. How quickly we forget how big the serving sizes are here! I did order a soft drink and then threw o... Sun, 7 Jul 2013 20:49:52 EST To sign up for the next 5% challenge or not, that is the question http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5407732 I'm aware that the deadline to sign for the summer 5% challenge is coming very soon. I'm having trouble deciding if I should sign up for this round. While I enjoy the challenges, the accountability and the friendship and would miss being part of the starfish, I'm thinking my participation would not be fair to my teammates.

You see, my husband and I are leaving for the US this Friday and we'll be gone for a month. While I totally intend to eat mindfully and exercise and live heal... Mon, 1 Jul 2013 18:02:38 EST End of my two "found" weeks! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5383532 Today is the day I should've been traveling back from Guatemala....and I promised to let you know how I spent my "found" time!

Turns out the paper work for our new visa was, in fact, ready by the day we were supposed to travel. Our lawyer was not advised of this, even though he had been in the office the day before. Go figure! And, also turns out, we had to go to the office within 30 days of the visa being finished...which as it happened, left us less than a week. We went to S... Sun, 9 Jun 2013 16:10:46 EST My biggest mental challenge http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5376813 Last week, on the Starfish 5% Challenge, we were asked to describe our biggest mental challenge on our weight loss journey. I’ve done a lot of thinking about that question since then. My biggest mental challenge is to keep deciding to make the healthy choices even when I do not get results. I’ve been attempting to lose about 20 pounds for more than 5 years, and the sad truth is, I’m just about where I started. No matter what I do, the weight just does not come off, nor do I see many non-s... Mon, 3 Jun 2013 13:28:42 EST Surprise change of plans! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5369269 The Business as Mission Consultation is scheduled to begin this evening. But, it is going to begin without my presence. Yesterday morning we headed to El Salvador and arrived at the border around 2:00 pm. We are in the process of changing our residency status in Honduras (which we started 6 months ago) and because we don't have a current plastic id card from Honduras, El Salvador would not allow us to enter the country. Complicated immigration laws, but the law is the law! So, we turned ... Mon, 27 May 2013 12:07:07 EST Who Me? An International Conference Speaker? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5367982 The title International Conference Speaker was certainly not what I had in mind when I told God "yes' to serving on the mission field! And it really isn't something I'm exactly comfortable with!! I mean really, who am I to stand up in front of mission board presidents and tell them why their Spanish speaking candidates need to learn English? All the while butchering their language?

But, that is what I'm doing these days. First, I did it in Honduras, next, I shared in Nicaragua,... Sat, 25 May 2013 22:59:56 EST Great week end http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5361502 Nothing like spending a week end traveling with friends and doing ministry all at the same time. My husband and I are really blessed that our team members are also great friends and we end up traveling with them a lot. We left early Friday morning to show Canadian visitors a coffee plantation, which required a lot of hiking, bird watching, sampling fresh cut sugar cane (however does one track fresh cut, sucked off the cane sugar juice? Couldn't have been that many calories..forget it and en... Sun, 19 May 2013 20:49:15 EST A small victory http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5359077 Yesterday I was with a group which included my husband, a couple of our co-workers, plus two visitors from Canada and a Honduran pastor. To reach the house we were going to visit, we had to walk down a steep hill...and then of course back up the hill. Although the other lady had to stop several times to make it up, I reached the top without feeling at all winded. The men, with the exception of my husband all had to stop a few times on the way up! Fri, 17 May 2013 09:36:40 EST Food tracking- Help Please! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5355209 Ok, it's something I've bee avoiding, but know it has got to be done. I started thyroid medication 6 weeks ago and after an initial 2 pound loss, nothing more has come off. I really feel the need to have an accurate food log to take when I go back to the doctor next month, so the food tracking has got to start.

I'm not sure exactly how to get it done. My previous efforts have ended in frustration, since it seems difficult to enter made from scratch using fresh ingredients recipe... Mon, 13 May 2013 13:18:15 EST Earthquake http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5318615 I was lying down for a mid day rest when I felt the bed move. At first I thought our dog was moving around, but quickly realized that he wasn't even in the room. About that time my husband came in and we agreed that we had felt an earthquake. We checked out the news and there was indeed at 5.4 earthquake up on the North coast of Honduras. So far I haven't heard of any damage. Wed, 10 Apr 2013 16:03:47 EST Non scale AND scale victories!!! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5317143 It's just been two weeks on the new thyroid medication, but so far I'm impressed! Little things that I hadn't really attributed to thyroid, such as awful looking finger nails because of dry skin have changed! My hands look nice for the first time in years! Maybe I'll have to splurge on a manicure next time we're in town. I now occasionally actually feel hunger, my digestive system is waking up, my husband says he sees good changes in my body! AND I have actually lost two pounds!!! 2... Tue, 9 Apr 2013 12:31:21 EST Doctor Report http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5302408 It's been a while since I've been on to give updates. After coming home from having the thyroid biopsy done, my pain level escalated to the point a pain block became necessary. So, it was another 2 hour drive back to the city for another doctor appointment! Thankfully, Dra, Haylock was able to get me in before she left that day for her Holy Week vacation. One and a half hours and 10 injections sites later, I was done. For some strange reason, Dra Haylock seemed to think that stress set ... Wed, 27 Mar 2013 19:41:01 EST Another loop http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5294247 So, what I thought was going to be a fairly routine follow up look at blood work with the endocrinologist didn't turn out to be quite so routine. She was happy with glucose and cholesterol, but didn't like the high TSH. Before she did anything else, she wanted to repeat that test, and just to be on the safe side, ordered an ultrasound of my thyroid. She sent me straight to the lab, the lab promised the results by 4pm, which would barely give me time to get back to the dr office. The ultra... Wed, 20 Mar 2013 21:34:11 EST Strength Training Plan http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5290060
I’ve been thinking through what my strength training program should look like. Unfortunately, I have discovered I am prone to over analyze a situation, until I find myself unable to make a plan or decision, for fear of missing something or not doing something the right way etc. I have had a few occasions in my life when I had the luxury of working with a trainer, and I looked forward to going to the gym then. The trainer made the decisions for me, based on what he knew to be best. S... Sun, 17 Mar 2013 16:41:12 EST Stretching http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5285335 Thinking about stretching this week has been a challenge. I have no problem getting my time in on cardio, because it can be easily measured and I know exactly when I have accomplished what I st out to do. The clock says 45 minutes, I know I'm done.

With stretching, on the other hand, I never feel like I am getting anywhere, I don't know what I should do and therefore, I don't what when I'm done. I have been spending the 10 minutes this week, but I have no idea if I'm doing what ... Wed, 13 Mar 2013 13:50:12 EST Headed to the UK http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5281798 I'm getting excited about our 5% challenge heading to the UK. Maybe we can drop by Belfast and visit my son and daughter in law while we're there. Julie is from Northern Ireland and has had some special experiences. Her grandfather was chosen to get to meet the Queen a few years ago, and this year, her father was invited to a special dinner with Parliament. Her dad was allowed to invite 3 guests, so Seth and Julie had the awesome privilege of dining with the Secretary of State for Northe... Sun, 10 Mar 2013 22:39:58 EST Health update http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5279343 In the midst of everything else, I was scheduled to do follow up blood work after last Nov. Of course, the lab order sheet was stolen, along with everything else and the doctor was headed out of town yesterday. Her secretary was able to get a new copy.

Since she is out of town until March 19, I can only guess at the interpretation of the results, but from what I can see, there are indications that my thyroid may not be working well. Maybe, do I dare hope, there is reason that I ... Fri, 8 Mar 2013 20:14:51 EST Update from yesterday http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5279339 Finally, after 3 days in the city, we are back home, safe and sound! Purse has been replaced, love my new smart phone, bank accounts restored etc. I'll still have to go to the driver's license office to get a new license, and we'll have to make the 5 hour trip to get my resident card.

Good things: passports were home in our safe, and therefore not taken, I have a photocopy of my id card that will serve until the other is replaced, I can get the driver's license much closer to ho... Fri, 8 Mar 2013 20:10:20 EST Yes, please, encouragement from team needed! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5278088 These last two days have been incredible, as in incredibly difficult! My purse was stolen at the airport where we were dropping friends off. Guess when one lives in the most dangerous city in the word, one should expect things like that. 3 hours at the police station, 3 at the bank to cancel credit card, get new passbooks, another hour at the immigration office trying to replace my id card (only to be told we have to go to another city 5 hours away!), cell phone replaced etc. I was suppo... Thu, 7 Mar 2013 22:20:31 EST Improvements for my plan http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5275500 The idea of how to make improvements to my plan is overwhelming right now. We have house guests and are leaving in an hour for the airport. Although my plan is in place to begin working on Bible verses while exercising, I haven't actually begun the plan yet! I guess getting started is the best way to improve it!

Hopefully, starting Friday we should have a long period of not traveling, so things will fall into place then. Ready and eager to actually get started Wed, 6 Mar 2013 08:14:47 EST Tuesday-How am I doing day by day? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5273909 We live a crazy life, often leaving home in predawn hours and not getting back until after bedtime! Although this does not mean I throw healthy habits to the wind, it does mean I have to be very flexible on how I make and try to meet goals and establish habits. Sunday we were gone all day and spent the whole time with a pastor and his family, so I didn’t{t get on the elliptical at all. Although I didn’t get opportunity to start working on my Bible verses while working out, I did get in mor... Tue, 5 Mar 2013 08:15:07 EST New Habit Day 3 http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5272339 I have a master list of the Bible verses which I will use to check off each verse as it is learned perfectly. Word perfect is the goal for each verse. I will work on memorizing 5 verses per week, with some adjustments made for longer or more difficult verses, and/or shorter, already known verses which need to be reviewed. This week’s are Joshua1:8, 1 John 5.11,12, John 13:7,2 Cor 5:17, and Acts 1:8.
I haven’t really thought about a reward or encouragement for completing a weekly goa... Yesterday, I printed up the first 12, because that is the number of sheet protectors I have on hand. I will insert the printed verses in the protectors, hang the protectors in front of the elliptical and while working out I will recite the verses. I wasn’t really thinking about weight loss or how to make it work or why it’s not working. I was just attempting to go back to sleep. My mind went to my attempts at weight loss and I realized that the ONLY time in my life that I have been successful losing weight was when I was taking weight loss medication. My doctor had suggested that it would be reasonable to try this, given my history of ... Sunday, we will leave home before 7am and get back after 11 pm, with no internet access all day. Monday, not sure yet what time we will have to leave, but will be on the road for a good part of the day and will return home with house guests. Wed, 13 Feb 2013 17:38:15 EST Winding down on the 5% challenge http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5145188 This challenge has taken several surprising turns for me and I'm still processing it all. First, I will admit, I didn't expect to actually lose 5% of my weight. Setting goals like that has just never worked for me. I can do all that I can do and not see anything come off. But, finding out that I have metabolic syndrome may have provided the answer to that. It seems that I don't lose weight because I am glucose intolerant and even though my diet has been decent, my body just isn't process... Sat, 17 Nov 2012 10:43:54 EST Recovering from big shock http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5136779 On Friday of last week, I went to see my pain specialist about new pain issues. In order to rule other things out, she sent me for a female exam. The ob/gyn, one who I had not seen before, discovered that it had been over a year since I had last done blood work. So he ordered the complete work up. Turns out, my cholestrol is pretty high and my glucose level puts me in the pre diabetic category. So much for exercising and eating right....I mean I consider it a big splurge and feel guilty ... I had the privilege of being the subject (maybe victim would be a better word here) of a workship. The foremost expert in the world came to Honduras to teach pain specialists from Central America new methods of treating sacroiliac pain and I was chosen to be the patient for the demonstration. Since I have suffered from sacroilitis for more than 5 years, this was a great opportunity. The downside was two and a half... I can, however, identify a few trigger situations. First, when my husband in gone for a long time, especially over nights, I tend to snack on unhealthy foods or skip eating because I'm not hungry.
