HOCKEYGAL21's SparkPeople Blog HOCKEYGAL21's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Coming to my senses Well, it's been going good. I am onto week 3 of this new weight loss adventure. After the marathon, I kept eating like I was still running as much each week. It did not do a body good. So now, I have some pounds to lose and it's been pretty good. I am back to being fully committed and back to my senses when it comes to food.

Portion control, planning my meals and exercise, and just focusing on my health has been really nice. I feel more in control of my hunger and my body. ... Wed, 23 Jan 2013 08:44:54 EST 30 Day Shred Killed me. I could hardly pick up my Brita Filter Pitcher to pour myself some water after. Wonder how I will feel 30 days from now....? Wed, 16 Jan 2013 21:17:19 EST Ode to Quinoa I love it! That's all.

Tonight I ate romaine lettuce, with a quinoa mix on top. I made the quinoa yesterday with zucchini, summer squash, and onion chopped up in it. I put some shrimp on top with a honey soy glaze that I made.

Delicious! It's called Sworkit. You can either choose ... Tue, 15 Jan 2013 20:08:28 EST Lettuce Wrap So gooooooood!!!

I made a lettuce wrap with ground turkey. I have started to eat almost the same things each day. I am going to change it up each week to keep things fresh, but I have enjoyed not worrrying or having to think about what I am going to eat. This week it was:

Breakfast-
Oatmeal
Small, skim latte

Snack-
Orange

Lunch-
Turkey Sandwich <... Goal- to lose weight, instead of gain it over the holiday season.

Plan- Fresh fruit and veggies daily, work out at least 30 min. per day 5 days a week, and do light exercise the other 2.

I feel excited to start this now, so by the Spring I am in fighting shape again. :)

Also, I've missed Spark! Tue, 27 Nov 2012 09:24:02 EST New Levels of Soreness Thanks for all the comments and support from my marathon post!

I experienced new levels of soreness after the marathon. This is a big deal for me because I have been an athlete my whole life, frequently pushing my body to it's limits, but I have NEVER felt like I did after the marathon. Holy crap!

First, my parents wanted to get a cab because I was struggling walking the 4 blocks to the car. Seriously. That day was bad. I spent the rest of it on the couch. The nex... Thu, 11 Oct 2012 09:48:08 EST Chicago Marathon I did it! I finished the Chicago Marathon today! So excited. I ran the whole way, VERY slowly. A bunch of friends came out to cheer, including my hockey team! They were amazing and kept popping up all over the course. My parents, sister, and boyfriend had t-shirts made that said, "Team Steph- Chicago Marathon" It was awesome. I truly had the best experience. I am happy to have done it. I raised over $2000 for the Special Olympics. It was a huge success.

I doubt I will ever ... Sun, 7 Oct 2012 18:28:20 EST Just do it! Nike knew what they were talking about when they came up with that slogan. I wrote this blog in my head while I was running today, so just bare with me.

I was tired when I came home from work today. And sweating. I started the summer program that I am helping facilitate and we were out all day in the fields catching bees and other insects. My legs were tired. I considered just skipping the run and sitting on the couch and watching the olympics. But no! That would not do! I h... Tue, 31 Jul 2012 20:28:17 EST How I know I'm a Runner 1. I've lost 2 toenails. :(
2. 3 miles seems like a warm-up
3. I like shopping for running clothes more than going out clothes
4. I drink chocolate milk after I run
5. I bought body glide to prevent chafing

I have a 13 mile run coming up on Sunday. I am now averaging 20-30 miles a week. It's getting intense! Thu, 12 Jul 2012 21:33:25 EST 100 Days of Weight Loss I just got the book in the mail and am so excited to start it. So today, it begins. I am at about 1700 calories and feeling full and satisfied. I am happy to set some new goals and to basically be taking a weight loss class with the book. It's going to be interesting. I am writing all the activities in my regular journal, because I think its going to help me learn a lot about myself.

But, the most exciting part is, after completing 100 days, I will be at my goal weight!!!!!!!!... Tue, 10 Jul 2012 19:23:07 EST Food Fight I have been having a horrible time with food this summer. Meaning, a great time. LOL. I have eaten basically everything and anything, and it shows. And though, it tasted pretty good, I feel horrible!

So, I am back to healthy eating and it starts today. I don't need to restrict my calories like before, because with the marathon training, I am burning a lot. I think that if I eat 2000 calories a day, I will still lose a little weight. I just need to get back on track in the ... Tue, 3 Jul 2012 13:30:36 EST Marathon Training Thanks, Chocoholic2276, for asking about my training. It's been going great. While school was still in session for me, I ran 3 times a week or so, but had a lot of hockey. Since then hockey has finished, and now my training is in full swing. I have been running 4 times a week and cross training when I can. My long run last weekend was 9 miles and I ran 24 miles last week. This week, my long run is 10! Wahhh. Tomorrow. I started running in my training group and it was great. It does g... Sat, 23 Jun 2012 11:43:12 EST I will lose weight this summer! I am going to eat healthier, fresher food. I will ride my bike daily. I will run my butt off. I can do it!

Hope all are well. :) Wed, 13 Jun 2012 19:14:48 EST Adopt-a-Beach I am going with my class to adopt-a-beach and clean up this morning. It should be a nice little work out if I do it right, anyway. Lots of bending and picking up trash! Lots of walking! Lots of fun. I like that my school sets these things up. I used to do tons of community service in high school and I kind of miss it.

Anyway, tonight I will be hydrating like a mad woman and then going to bed early. I have my 10 miler in the morning and I am still pretty nervous. I am sore ... Fri, 25 May 2012 08:55:47 EST Nervous... I am so nervous for my 10-mile race on Saturday. I haven't run 10 miles since high school. I don't think this is going to be pretty. I am hoping the other runners will motivated me to not die on the course. Eek. BUT, 10 miles is only a small step up in my marathon training. By this time, in a couple months, like 18 miles will be my long run. CRAZY.

What did I get myself into? Thu, 24 May 2012 10:54:46 EST Beaver Fever! I went to an ice hockey tournament this weekend and my team won! We are on a roll. This wasn't more normal season team, it was just a random group of girls. Our team name was the "Angry Beavers." Too funny. Anyway, it was a great time.

School is only 2 1/2 weeks from ending, thank goodness. But, I must be insane, I signed up to do summer school this year. I figured it would help me from sitting home and eating all day. Also, make a lot of money. Also, I will be able to buy... Wed, 23 May 2012 10:36:56 EST A break I took a little break from Spark this past week. Not intentionally, just so busy. With all my hockey games, a benefit for school, and running, my nights have been filled. But, I will try to do a better job checking in. I ran 5 miles tonight, slowly. I have a cold and just haven't been feeling up to it physically. Hopefully I can shake it by this weekend, I have a hockey tournament in WI. We'll seeeee......It won't stop me!

I hope all are doing well! Thu, 17 May 2012 21:08:44 EST Satisfied I am still riding high from winning the State Championship Hockey Game last night. It was so exciting and fun to see our hard work come to fruition. The game was very intense, we were playing one of the dirtiest teams in the league. I was shocked when the referees kept calling OUR team for penalties. During the game, I got tripped, punched in the back of the head, and slashed in the arm. Did the refs see that? No. We played most of the game in penalty kill. I scored the first goal of t... Mon, 7 May 2012 10:13:28 EST State Champions!!! My team won our State Championship Tournament tonight 2-1. I scored the first goal. I am sooooooo pumped, I can't believe it. We get to go to nationals next year in Florida!!!!! it's amazing. All of our hard work and dedication paid off! Woooooo!!!!!

I believe that Spark is directly related. I am in the best shape I have been in years, and it certainly showed. You can do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I did!!!!! Mon, 7 May 2012 00:15:47 EST A Win! We won our hockey game! Which is good, because if we had lost this one, we wouldn't be in the championship game Sunday. All we have to do is win today and we are in. We are playing the weakest team in the tournament today, so it should be in the bag. I hope.

Another win, was I stayed within my calories yesterday! It was Friday, I even had pizza, but I was good!

I ran today and have hockey tonight. I started the day off right with an omelet with parmesan and spinac... Sat, 5 May 2012 12:07:34 EST State Hockey Tournament So, today marks the first game of our state ice hockey tournament. If we win, we get to go to Nationals next year, so I am VERY excited. I feel really confident lately with hockey, and I think it's because of my overall physical fitness. I have been working out like crazy, and I no longer get that tired on the ice. I skate my shift, recover quickly, and am ready to go again. I actually can't believe the change in my stamina. I think it's because when you are running so much, your lungs,... Wed, 2 May 2012 08:21:12 EST May Goals I am glad it is May, for a few reasons.

1. I am getting discouraged. With myself, mostly. I work so hard during the week, to eat well, to exercise, and then I bomb every weekend. And have to start over, and start over, and start over. I am a hamster running in a wheel it seems. But, at least I am running. I haven't given up. This month will be better than the last.

2. I think May is my official one-year Sparkiversary! I have made it a year. I feel good. I lo... Tue, 1 May 2012 10:57:11 EST Ironman Hockey Tournament Champs! it is 5 a.m. as I type this. Why, you might ask. Because i played in an all night Ironman Hockey Tournament. 3 girls teams signed up, so we played each team twice. The games were 15 min. long and our teams had no subs. So, you played 15 straight minutes. In our final game, our team got really pumped. I felt fresh, like I hadn't played 4 other games that night. I was ready. We won it 3-0 and I scored 2 of the goals. It was awesome! And we got some sick sweatshirts that have patches s... Sun, 29 Apr 2012 06:07:03 EST My Year Without Soda Yesterday marked my year without soda anniversary. Really, the year flew. When I started, I was VERY addicted to Coca Cola. This addiction runs in my family. There is rarely a day I see my mom or aunts without a McDonald's coke in their hands. Truely. And, sadly, I take after them. So, last year when I started my healthy lifestyle journey, I decided to get off the stuff. I gave up soda for a year. At first, it was difficult. I like Coke with pizza, burgers, Indian food, Thai food, u... Fri, 27 Apr 2012 08:53:05 EST Recommitted Day 2 of perfect eating. I can do this. I am feeling really good lately about trying to lose weight. I feel motivated and strong. I am happy to be planning out meals, cooking, and making healthier choices. After stagnating for months at right around the same weight, I think I will be able to start losing again. This is the same thing that happened last year, right around this time. I had been eating poorly, being wishy washy about counting calories, and all of a sudden something just s... Wed, 25 Apr 2012 10:32:49 EST Biggest Loser= Whiny Babies Omg, I am just watching the new episode from last week now. I am sooooooo angry. I cannot believe the way these contestants are complaining. This is a huge gift that they got to be on the show. Tons of people sign up to try to get on the show, get the best trainers, live for free, free food, free gym, free weight loss if you put in the work. It's sooooooooooooo frustrating. There are millions of people doing it on their own, paying for gyms, health food, trainers. How ungrateful. This... Mon, 23 Apr 2012 18:35:21 EST A New Plan I am trying something new for the week. I absolutely outdid myself eating poorly this weekend and it needs to stop. I feel incredibly guilty and am very thankful the scale does not reflect the junk I ate. Fortunately, I ran 7 miles yesterday, so that might have helped a bit.

My new plan is to eat more calories throughout the day, and see if that helps my self-control at night. Also, I am actively trying to get more protein. So here is what today looks like.

500 cal... Mon, 23 Apr 2012 09:43:28 EST Exercise Clothes Shopping Addiction? I can't stop! I have bought a lot of new exercise clothes in the last month. I keep finding discount running gear at Marshall's, TJ Max, and, that I cannot stop purchasing it. Seriously. I have gotten a running hat, sunglasses, fuel belt, Iphone running case, socks, shoes, like 4 shirts, and a pair of capris, and also a sports bikini for paddleboarding. I feel like I have finally reached my limit on the amount my closet will hold and my wallet can handle. :) But, I am READY. ... Thu, 19 Apr 2012 10:53:15 EST One day strong So yesterday's eating went well. Today, I will do it again. Also, I have a run scheduled for later. I just got my new Runner's World magazine and I feel like it's going to really inspire me. I just got a subscription (a b-day present to myself). I think it will help motivate me and help me find foods that will keep me full and fuel me for running. If I can get through this week and weekend eating well, I will feel very encouraged. The only thing standing in my way is me.

Wed, 18 Apr 2012 10:42:49 EST Eating troubles I am having trouble getting this eating under control. I went wild last week, all week, due to going out to watch hockey games, birthday celebrations, ect. And I just want it to continue into this week, but my weight loss plan does not fit with that lifestyle, so I have to get it under control. I have been doing a good job eating a healthy breakfast and lunch. Lots of fruits and veggies, yogurt, healthy food. Then, I blow it at dinner and don't get me started on the weekend. I have to g... Tue, 17 Apr 2012 10:58:38 EST 9 miles! I set out to run 8. I ended up going 9 miles. So exciting. It felt pretty good. I felt like I could probably go longer. This is pretty fun.

It was my birthday yesterday, so I had a great time and partied with my friends. Now, back to business. I want to make 29 my hottest year ever. :) Sun, 15 Apr 2012 20:31:33 EST Help! I ate a donut. I hate donuts. Seriously. But, this morning at school, I ate one. What am I doing to myself? First the Easter Candy and pizza yesterday, and a donut today. Sigh. It's like I love sabotaging myself or something. Thank goodness I exercise so much, or I would definitely be seeing this more. I really just need to have a healthy food plan for the day and stick with it. The problem I am having is that I am hungry all the time. I need help training for this marathon nutritionally. With all... Tue, 10 Apr 2012 10:33:50 EST Break Update I had a lovely break. It was seriously such a nice break from school, that I am sad to be back at work today. Wah. I went running 4 times! Very exciting and totaled 19 miles. Whoo. I got new running shoes and some gels to try. I had a birthday celebration with my family, even though my birthday isn't until next Saturday, it was the only time I could be back in Michigan. It was great. I ate terribly, but have plans to get back on track this week. I have about 10 weeks left of school- I... Mon, 9 Apr 2012 10:35:15 EST Spring Break!!! Woo hoo! I am on Spring Break for the week and soooo excited. I have plans to do a deep spring cleaning on my apartment. And I am going home to Michigan at the end of the week. I plan on doing a lot of running and working out this week too.

Off to a great start today, I ran 7 miles this morning. I woke up at 6:30 wide awake. So, I thought, why not knock off this run early. So, I got up, got ready, and was off. It took me 71 minutes, so that's not too bad and I felt really go... Sun, 1 Apr 2012 10:04:08 EST Good choices I bought a snack for some students today, but way overestimated how many I needed and have a lot left. They are individually packaged cheez its and cookies. OMG, each have around 200 calories in them and they are so small. It really helped me realize what I am actually eating when I go for the junk food. I thought in my head, is eating on package of these really worth 200 calories? I would still be hungry. I would still be tempted to eat another. So, I put them out of my sight and need... Fri, 30 Mar 2012 10:19:59 EST Healthy Food and Exercise Well, well, eating healthy food in moderation and getting lots of exercise DO lead to weight loss! :) I am really excited today because this morning the scale is at 166. I am 1 pound away from my lowest weight on the journey. It only took me half a year to get here again. Honestly. I had such high hopes when I started school this Fall, that I would be at 148 by this time now. Alas, I gained a few pounds here and there, lost, gained, lost, basically the same 5 lbs. over and over again. ... Wed, 28 Mar 2012 08:17:09 EST Shamrock Shuffle I did an 8k yesterday! It was very fun and gorgeous weather. I ran the Shamrock Shuffle with my best friend. It felt very short, surprisingly! But, we were running VERY slowly. My friend has not been training at all, so she had to stop and walk a bit too, but I stuck with her. We had planned to do this together months ago. So, it was still fun and a good work out too.

Unfortunately, then I pigged out ALL day. My eating is ridiculous. I tried to make up for it today by eatin... Mon, 26 Mar 2012 22:51:34 EST We Won! I meant to post this sooner, but the week has been a whirlwind. We won our hockey play-offs! It's so exciting, it's hard to capture it in words. Our team played awesome and we won every game. Our first game came down to the last minute. We knew that the final team we were going to play for the championship was going to be good, because we had watched them play the night before. They were very rough and there was even a fight! That only fueled the fire, we were ready the next day. They ... Thu, 22 Mar 2012 08:21:27 EST Hockey Play Offs! 345 Well, it's finally here. I cannot wait to play our first game tonight! It's late though, at 11. Thank goodness, because I have to work all day. Anyway, we have 3 games for sure, and when we win, one more! :) It's a big exercise weekend. And I am sure it's going to be tons of fun. I feel so ready for it this time. Last year at this time, I weighed 195 lbs. and hockey was my only real exercise. This year, I am running, biking, playing hockey and eating well. I feel great. ... Fri, 16 Mar 2012 08:37:57 EST Gorgeous Weather! Oh my gosh, the weather has been amazing in Chicago this week. Today it's supposed to be 77!!! Crazy! So, I opted for my easier plan this week and it's been good. I took Monday off from exercise to help my legs recover from all of the running. I did an easy 2 miles yesterday and plan on going for a walk and riding on my stationary bike for 30 min. today.

Anyway, getting really excited for my hockey tournament. I will keep you guys posted on how we do. Also, once this is all... Wed, 14 Mar 2012 08:08:50 EST A good problem I have a good problem to ponder for this week. I have been getting in 3 days of running per week, for the past 4 weeks now. It's been great. However, this week is hockey playoffs, so I am worried about my legs being tired, if I try to fit in all that running. I really need to be fresh for these games.

So, help me out! Here are the two scenarios. Let me know what you think is the better plan. And, keep in mind I ran 6 miles yesterday and 3 on Saturday, so I am already kind o... Mon, 12 Mar 2012 10:15:14 EST Addicted! Omg, I might be getting addicted to exercising! (Not in the bad, overboard way.) On Wednesday, when I had my dental work, I didn't really exercise other than doing my ab thing. But, yesterday, I felt overly ready to get back to exercising. And, I am chomping at the bit to go running tomorrow. I feel like going 1 day without doing some exercise makes me anxious, like I need to get outside or something.

The weather is getting nicer and nicer. I love Spring running and can't w... Fri, 9 Mar 2012 09:00:53 EST Ow! Had my root canal tonight. Survived, but sore now. However, even though I am not feeling good, I did my ab challenge! LOL. I am doing an ab challenge for March, where I do ab stuff 6/7 days a week and I got today's done. And it hurt. But, no pain no gain.

Also, I am down 2 more pounds. Now I am only 3 away from 165. Let's go let's go let's go let's go. Maybe this enthusiasm is the vicodin speaking.... Wed, 7 Mar 2012 22:32:16 EST Goals for the Week Another rough eating weekend. Blahhhhhh. I didn't go crazy, but sometimes the calories just add up. I need to do a better job of keeping my refrigerator stocked with healthy, filling choices.

Goals for the week:

Stay within calories everyday
Run 3 times- 3 miles, 3miles, 6 miles
Cross train 3 times- floor hockey, stationary bike, ice hockey practice
Survive my root canal on Wednesday.... Wahhhh! I took Thursday afternoon off so I could recuperate. I w... Mon, 5 Mar 2012 13:55:44 EST 6.2 miles! Woot! I ran 6.2 miles this morning! It felt really good and I felt like I could go another mile or so. Yay! Also, my eating was ok over the weekend. I was a little over my calories, but I have been under all week, so I don't feel too bad. Anyway, it was a great week and I feel back on track. Finally. I am hoping this week to get back down to 165- the weight on my tracker and then move forward from there. :)

Have a great week! Sun, 4 Mar 2012 14:10:33 EST 4 Days On Track Woo hoo. I am getting into a groove here. I have exercised and eaten within my calories for the past 4 days. :) And, I am tracking my calories, so I know exactly how I am doing. It's great! I did 60 minutes on the exercise bike tonight and have plans to run tomorrow.

Also, weird, but I was watching Man vs. Food and the Biggest Loser. Opposite ends of the spectrum there.....

Have a great night! Wed, 29 Feb 2012 21:37:05 EST Dental Woes, AGAIN Sob! I am still having dental issues. They have finally, after like 4 appointments, decided that my tooth does need a root canal. Which means another billion dollars that I will have to give my dentist. Another 3 appointments that I don't have time for. And more pain under the dental drill. I can't take it!

But, instead of getting depressed about it (which is part of the reason I gained 15 lbs. after my dental crisis last winter), I am going to keep on keeping on. I have been... Tue, 28 Feb 2012 20:23:42 EST Sunday Relaxing start today. It was such a busy week, I hardly had time to work out last week. I am going to get back at it today. Also, my hockey game last night was VERY physical, and it made me think that I really need to start lifting more weights. Playoffs are in two weeks, so I can probably put on a little bit more muscle.

Anyway, I am going to be a workoutahlic this week, and I am going to focus on eating healthier as well.

To a healthy week! Sun, 26 Feb 2012 13:11:13 EST
