HEALTHYLIFER's SparkPeople Blog HEALTHYLIFER's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Long awaited (??) update on my husband's fall and injuries My husband, who has osteogenesis imperfecta (O.I. or brittle bone disease) fell back on Feb 17. He broke his arm in several places, three fingers in the back of his hand and had multiple facial fractures. He had to have surgery to place a plate just about his right eye for a depressed orbital fracture and a rod & screws in his arm and pins in his three fingers. He was in a cast for four months due to a fracture I believe the doctor called a 'butterfly fracture'. Basically it was a fracture wh... Fri, 18 Nov 2016 18:37:30 EST Follow up visit with the hand doctor for my husband My husband fell down on Feb 17 breaking some facial bones and also three fingers in the back of his left hand just below the knuckles and also his radius bone in his left arm in two spots, called a segmented fracture. He had surgery on Feb 25 to have a plate put in the arm and he has wires in the fingers. Today he went back for a follow up visit to see how the bones were healing. He had his original cast removed, x-rays taken and the doctor was determining if he should remove the wires or not... Wed, 6 Apr 2016 20:02:21 EST Going to look at a new apartment today Going to go look at a new apartment today and sure hoping we can get it. A little back husband has a genetic bone disease called osteo genesis imperfecta (brittle bone disease) We live in a duplex right now with six steps going down to our apartment. In the last two years he has fallen four times breaking bones each time. He currently has multiple broken bones from a fall in Feb. We have been trying to find somewhere that does not have stairs so he can use a electric wheelchair to ... Tue, 5 Apr 2016 15:57:35 EST 13 Days Post Surgery Doctor Visit for my Husband Took my husband today for his follow up visit after his surgery. It has been 24 days since his accident/fall and 13 days since his surgery. They removed the surgical splint and took x-rays and said that the bones all looked like they were aligned good and starting to heal. He does have a fracture blister on his arm that looks gray but they said that it will heal on its own. The doctor said that usually he puts patients that have had surgery/gotten a plate into a splint at this point. But he s... Wed, 9 Mar 2016 19:50:23 EST My husband fell down hard! Last Wednesday my husband took a fall and landed on his face and his arm. He broke his left forearm (radius), three fingers in the back of his hand below his knuckles, three ribs on the right side and his sternum (breast bone), his right cheekbone, eye socket and sinus. He had surgery to repair the eye socket and sinus while in the hospital as they were depressed fractures. The doctor went in through his upper eye lid and placed a plate about eye brow level to attach the bones back to his sku... Sat, 27 Feb 2016 20:50:55 EST I am the mother of a State Champion! My son plays hook for a local high school age rugby team. Friday was their regional play off game.

They won the game 13 to 8 and advanced to the semi-finals on Saturday morning.

They won that game 17 to 5 and advanced to the finals later in the day.

<img src=" Sun, 27 May 2012 02:37:29 EST Wishbone Day Celebration! Yesterday was the 3rd Annual Wishbone Day. My family celebrated of course since my dh has Osteogenesis Imperfecta, or brittle bones. He has broken over 300 bones in his 54 years of life. His last major break was a year ago--a broken left shoulder/humerus bone in 3 places from tripping on a rug at church. Since then he has had some broken toes from stubbing them and a few cracked ribs from sneezing but in our life those are considered minor breaks and we handle them at home.

Here a... Mon, 7 May 2012 16:22:53 EST May 6th--3rd Annual Wishbone Day! Today my family will be going yellow to help raise awareness of OI (Osteogenesis Imperfecta) which my dh has. My dh is 54 years old and has broken over 300 bones in his lifetime, his first ones being when he was born. For some families like my dh's it is genetic (his father had OI as do two of his sisters) He also has uncles and cousins with OI. For other families it is a spontaneous mutation in the genes. We were lucky that we were able to have two healthy children who do not have OI.
... Sun, 6 May 2012 02:31:27 EST 3 months Well, been back on Spark People for 3 months now and I've lost 9.8 pounds so far. My jeans are so loose that I don't have to unbutton them to pull them on/off. I've even noticed that my wedding ring is starting to feel a little looser (I can even take it off/on now and find myself playing with it sometimes).

My progress has been slower than I would like but I know that I am older now than the last time I lost my weight. I also know that my health isn't as good as it used to be, ... Wed, 2 May 2012 18:37:31 EST Choices My daughter got her state refund deposited into her bank account today so she decided she wanted to buy lunch for everyone. Well the place she wanted to go everything is pretty much fried. So, I said you three go ahead and get something and I will just eat here at home. I seriously couldn't think of one thing from the restaurant that would of been safe for them to bring me home.

So while they sat there crunching their fried foods (which after awhile actually even started sounding ... Wed, 18 Apr 2012 18:19:16 EST Sickness/Health After being sick earlier this week (Tuesday) with a horrid stomach/intestinal bug I am finding how thankful I am for my health. It's amazing how much for granted we take our bodies and what they do for us until they aren't doing for us!! Tuesday really wiped me out!! I felt like I was put into a blender and then spit back out into my house. I was weak, disoriented and just plain exhausted. I had no umph, no desire to eat, no strength at all on Wednesday. So not only was I out of commission on... Fri, 6 Apr 2012 16:35:52 EST 2 months back on SP report Well, its been 2 months that I've been back on Sparkpeople now. Sun, 1 Apr 2012 18:45:20 EST Walking Errands My daughter has been wanting to change banks because the one she has her account with now has been charging her a monthly fee for not having a direct deposit. So, today we decided to go get it done before they charged her again. My mom suggested we try her credit union which happens to be sorta close to our house. So, since my son always seems to have our car to go to school and then rugby practice we decided to make a walking afternoon out of it instead of trying to squeeze it in between his... Wed, 28 Mar 2012 19:46:28 EST Rugby Game #1/My son inspires me! Today was my ds's first rugby game of the season. He plays position 2, hook or hooker. His job is to hook the ball with his foot during the scrum and pass it out to his teammates. Here he is getting ready to start the scrum...he is in the green shirt with the white socks in the middle of the picture.

One of his other "jobs" is to throw the ball in during line-outs. He calls the "play" so that the other p... Sun, 18 Mar 2012 01:38:18 EST What a beautiful day for a walk! Woke up today and my migraine felt like it was still trying to hang on from yesterday. But I got up and had some oatmeal and light cranberry juice. Then I got dressed and went around a few places with my mom looking for some things. My head started feeling better as the day went on. After coming home and having a snack of some yogurt and a banana I asked my husband how he felt about going for a walk.

So...I filled my water bottle, got my sunglasses and got his wheelchair out of th... Fri, 9 Mar 2012 20:53:25 EST One Month Back on Spark People--Feb Report After being gone for awhile I've been back on Spark People for 1 month now. Here are some of my accomplishments for the past month.

1. I logged into SP every day in Feb.
2. I exercised 8 out of 29 days (I know it may not sound good but I exercised 0/31 days in Jan!)
3. I completely logged my food 27 out of 29 days--the two days I didn't was because I couldn't figure out how to log the food because I had eaten out and couldn't find the food.
4. I got my 8 glasses of ... Sat, 3 Mar 2012 02:07:33 EST Carmel Apple Cobbler Cake Added a new recipe to Spark Recipes tonight. I had some calories left after dinner and decided I'd splurge on a dessert, so I pulled out my old handwritten cookbook of recipes from when I had hit my goal weight before. I had some apples on hand so this recipe was the one I chose to do. My husband and I both had a nice bowl right after I took it out of the oven. I even dished up some for my daughter to take to work tomorrow as part of her lunch.

<img src="http://photos-ak.sparkpeo... Thu, 1 Mar 2012 01:35:22 EST Emergency Room/Friday So, today my son and his friend were attempting to fix the cv joint on my car that shattered on Monday. They had the car jacked up and the front tire off and under the car next to the jack. From what I understand my son's friend was under the car using a crowbar trying to get some part off. Next thing they knew the jack failed and the car started falling forwards. Luckily the tire stopped the car from falling completely on my son's friend!! But his hand did get caught between the crowbar and ... Sat, 25 Feb 2012 01:40:01 EST Car troubles, Kidney stones and Migraines What a week it has been!!

My poor dh started having trouble on Saturday night with pain and burning when going to the bathroom. We were sure he had another UTI. We took him to the doctor yesterday...but when they did the urinalysis they said his white cell count wasn't high indicating it was an infection although all his symptoms said that it was a UTI. He did have blood in his urine though. The doctor thinks he might have/might be passing a kidney stone and/or had/have an infectio... Wed, 22 Feb 2012 19:14:33 EST 24 years of marriage Today is my 24th wedding anniversary. So hard to believe that so much time has passed. It seems like only yesterday that I married my best friend. We have been through so much together through the years. Happiness, sadness, joy, pain, births and deaths...the list goes on and on. Hopefully we are both better people for what we have gone through together. I know I couldn't of got through a lot of the sorrows without him by my side. And I am glad he was there to share the happy times with. It is... Tue, 21 Feb 2012 01:29:09 EST Frustrated and feeling down I am frustrated and feeling kinda down right now. I am not seeing progress on the scale like I normally do when starting to eat right and exercising again. I have tried giving myself a pep talk but somehow its just not the same coming from yourself (if you know what I mean). But I have fought the "devil" on my shoulder that says to just give up....shot down the "why bothers" and kept going. I know deep down inside from past experience that if I keep trying that my hard work will pay off eve... Sun, 19 Feb 2012 01:28:33 EST Varied my workout today Thought I'd vary my workout today and shake things up--LOL!! We have the Wii Fit Plus and after I did my weigh in I gave the remote to my husband and had him pick the activities for me to do. He had me do some yoga, balance games, aerobics and other games (forget what the actual title of the category is)...I had to laugh cause he never picked any strength exercises for me to do!! But he did have me sweating!! Only time I really wanted to complain (but I didn't) was when he had me do a jog the... Mon, 13 Feb 2012 19:23:19 EST Proud of my son & his team, as for me I'm on day 2 of a migraine =( My son and his team won their game today, 30 to 14!! I am so proud of him!! He played hard and has the scrapes, bruises and whiplash to prove it. Yep, whiplash...his neck is so stiff. He basically got run over by a Polynesian kid and got his feet taken out from underneath him. He said one minute he was upright and the next minute he was flying and hit the ground. Luckily he didn't get a concussion, but his neck has really stiffened up over the day and I'm sure it will be more stiff in the mo... Sun, 12 Feb 2012 01:45:19 EST Vegas & Rugby My 17 year son plays rugby for a local youth team (high school age, but not for a high school). Yesterday his team left for Las Vegas, Nevada for a regional tournament. They are going to be playing teams from the intermountain west area. He is VERY excited!!!! I wish I could of gone with him but I couldn't =( He plays position 2, hook or hooker. Basically his job is to 'hook' the ball with his foot when they are in a scrum and pass it out to his teammates. He also is the one who throws the b... Fri, 10 Feb 2012 22:32:35 EST Baby Steps and 1st weigh in after starting back to SP Today my pedometer says 6033 at the end of my day as I am ready to head to bed. I honestly can't remember the last time I got over 4000 steps in a day let alone 5000. So to look down tonight and see that number was very encouraging!

I know it is going to be an uphill battle to lose this weight again. But I've done it before and I know I can do it again. And it takes baby steps and today was one baby step in the right direction!

Oh, and my weigh in after 1 week back to S... Wed, 8 Feb 2012 01:52:21 EST Cheesy Crab Dip So today my husband and son are watching the Super bowl along with another few million other guys across the country (lol). They wanted some munchies (of course) and I had seen the article on the front page of Spark about Super Bowl foods and this recipe was one of the ones listed. So we made it up and we've all been enjoying it this afternoon. I had my portion and I have to say it was pretty good =)

Oh, I did make two substitutions...I didn't have any fresh dill so I used dried ... Sun, 5 Feb 2012 18:23:31 EST Smoke!! Burnt food!! Oh my!! My dh and dd were making dinner tonight while I was working out on the Wii Fit. They had some thyme chicken nuggets and homemade fries going in the oven and some brussels sprouts going on the stovetop and I guess they both thought the other was keeping an eye on things. Next thing I know I hear the timer going off and dh went in to take things out of the oven. I hear him yell for my dd that the kitchen was full of smoke and the fries were burnt!! So, we opened the front door and some windows ... Fri, 3 Feb 2012 22:23:36 EST Here we go AGAIN Well its been awhile since I've been on Sparkpeople. I could list a whole bunch of excuses, but that is all they would be--excuses. But I'm back and I hope I can keep it up longer this time and make more progress towards my goal then I did the last time I came back! That said, I am off to a pretty good start I hope. I started yesterday and I logged my food two days straight now and exercised on my Wii Fit two days straight now. Two days down and more to go... Thu, 2 Feb 2012 00:12:11 EST ICK! I have been having a rough 2010 so far. I gained 8 lbs over the holidays due to not eating right and not exercising (my own fault). Then starting Jan 2 I have been having issues with migraines (which I've had since I was a child) and now since Sunday I have been really lightheaded and dizzy. All I want to do is sit with my head still and my eyes closed so the room will stop moving. Went to my mom's yesterday and she took my blood pressure (she has a cuff she used for my dad) and it was 144/93... Fri, 15 Jan 2010 16:03:47 EST December already? Wow...all the time spent preparing for our move, the physical time it took to move and now unpacking and time has really flown by. I feel like I lost a large part of November...maybe I packed it in a box and will find it soon?? Thu, 3 Dec 2009 01:16:06 EST Halloween 5K Saturday my son, his friend and I participated in a local 5K fun run. As I have been sick for the last week or so I was NOT ready to run, but wanted to do my best under the circumstances. I did try to run twice and both times I felt like I was going to lose a lung on the trail due to deep, hurting coughs. So, needless to say I gave up on that idea and just walked as fast as I could. I was surprised that I was not the last person in (3 people finished after me) and my official time was 50:30. ... Sun, 1 Nov 2009 02:36:12 EST Whew! After trying all day yesterday to get ahold of our landlord (who lives in another state) he finally called us back today. My dh explained to him that we were needing to move due to his physical problems getting up and down the stairs. The landlord was very kind and said that he understood and that since it was due to medical reasons he would let us out of our lease without penalty!! Needless to say we are VERY grateful!!!!! So, our moving day is going to be November 14th. Sun, 25 Oct 2009 21:13:33 EST Moving!!!! Well, long story short...we're moving next month.

Long story, not quite so uncle, aunt and cousins were living in a home owned by my aunt's relative of some sort. My aunt is disabled by polio and my cousins are mentally delayed. My uncle who was their caregiver had a stroke and needed care himself now. So, their oldest son moved his parents into a rest home together and his two siblings into a group home. When he moved them out it left the house they were living in empty... Fri, 23 Oct 2009 23:54:43 EST Catching up? Lets see...what do I have to report about since my last entry????

Umm...on October 10th my 15yods and me participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. We had beautiful weather, a good turn out of people, raised over $100,000 as a group and a nice walk too!

On October 15th my dh went to the doctor for a follow up on his hand. It was not as good of a visit as we were hoping. 39 The doctor took new x-rays but he didn't like how some of them loo... Tue, 20 Oct 2009 01:00:58 EST BAD headache/migraine day I got up and went to work from 8:30-12. Then I came home, changed my clothes and went to lunch with my friend. I was enjoying my lunch and doing great except for a headache, but it wasn't too bad. As lunch went on the hanging light over our table REALLY started to bother me. By the end of our meal it was killing me and I wanted it turned off!! We got out to my friends car and she was driving me back to her house to drop me off at my car. I started feeling really nauseated and generally not ri... Wed, 7 Oct 2009 23:35:38 EST Stress... Had a REALLY stressful day yesterday regarding dh being able to go back to work. He was told last week when we took in the paperwork the dr filled out that he could go back Monday on light duty. But when he got there the computer didn't let him log in. Seems the asst. manager who approved him coming back on light duty isn't there anymore and of course he (the asst manager) didn't submit the paperwork before he left . The paperwork can't seem to be found anywhere and of course the overall man... Wed, 30 Sep 2009 01:23:03 EST Doctors vist for dh's hand Dr's visit went well...found out that the break is at the base of the ring finger where the bones connect into the wrist. It is only slightly displaced and the dr didn't believe that surgery was necessary (YIPPEE!!!!) He placed dh in a new splint which he likes better. Now instead of only having 2 fingers free he has 3 and the other two fingers are slightly bent also which is supposed to help with reducing stiffness once the splint is removed.

<img src="http://photos-ak... Fri, 18 Sep 2009 01:43:36 EST What a weekend!! We went to a yard sale Saturday morning with our upstairs neighbors. It was just down the street so we had pushed my dh down in his wheelchair. He had gotten out and was walking around at the yard sale and was doing fine. We were ready to leave and he was heading back to sit down in the wheelchair. Well, there was a step up on the concrete about 2 inches and I guess he tripped on it. He was holding stuff in his hands so when he went down his hands were closed around what he was holding so he ... Mon, 14 Sep 2009 00:55:35 EST My cousin Had a GREAT visit yesterday at my mom's house with my cousin. I haven't seen him for almost 21 years. We have both changed a LOT! Since our last visit I have gotten married and have two kids (18 & 15) and he is now a grandpa of 2. We had a great visit and spent a lot of time catching up and enjoying the company of one another. I even got to meet his new wife (he got remarried last year). She seemed really nice and joined in the conversations too which was really nice. I hope it isn't such a l... Mon, 7 Sep 2009 03:31:26 EST Goodbye box of butter! Weigh in today and I'm down another pound. That is 4 sticks of butter gone! Gone I say! I don't ever want to see those 4 sticks of fat again!! Got about 35 more pounds to go till I am back to my goal weight. Wed, 2 Sep 2009 19:52:32 EST Migraines I wish someone would outlaw migraines and make them disappear off this planet. I am so tired of being sick and tired. Was trying to be online last night and my head was killing me. My vision was blurry and I was sick to my stomach. I did the couple things I HAD to do and then put myself to bed! Luckily this morning it was no longer migraine level, but my head still hurts and I was just not myself today. I didn't exercise, I didn't eat right, I just had no umph! I hope tomorrow is a better day... Fri, 28 Aug 2009 01:56:20 EST Candy Corn & Stress Today was my turn to host my bunco group at my house. I always stress out WAY too much over these types of things and try to avoid them at all costs. But, alas I couldn't get out of it this time as everyone has to have their turn. I had to have it outside as my apartment is too little to fit in one card table let alone three card tables and 12 chairs. So, I spent most my day cleaning outside and inside trying to get the place presentable. I also had no idea what to serve for dinner and had to... Wed, 26 Aug 2009 01:14:51 EST I'm back! Well, a lot has happened since I last posted. Let's see...

Dd graduated from high school in May, we went on a trip to Illinois in June, in July dd got a job!!! In August I got to go to PA to see a friend =)

Those are some of the good things that happened. On a sadder note, I gained about 40 lbs =( But I am happy to report that I am back tracking my intake and exercise on SP and I am making progress!!

<img src=" Mon, 24 Aug 2009 01:55:51 EST Not again... Wednesday my dh was home alone while the kids were at school and I was with my friend. He said the phone rang and he got up to go answer it. He says he must have tripped over his own feet, because the next thing he knew he was on the kitchen floor! As he was going down he hit a kitchen chair and then the floor with his left arm. He snapped one of the bones (ulna) in two spots. Right below the elbow and about 3 inches away. We just got through a horrid break, major surgery and 8 months recove... Sun, 5 Oct 2008 03:29:49 EST Yikes...I haven't been keeping up... Yikes, I haven't been keeping up with my site very well have I? Oops!! Guess I will have to try and do a better job.

Let's July my family (me, dh, dd and ds) went on a cruise to Alaska. It was a LOT of fun!! We got to see glaciers, tour cities and just plain enjoy ourselves. Unfortunately I gained about 8 pounds while gone and have been working on getting it to leave every since. Of course it is coming off a LOT slower than it went on =(

In August my kids ... Mon, 8 Sep 2008 22:05:59 EST Mother's Day I had a pretty good Mother's day. My family (dh, dd & ds) gave me a pretty ring with hearts on it, a pink t-shirt, book and a candle. They even made dinner for me and it even tasted good =) Mon, 12 May 2008 01:58:35 EST Visiting Wed night (April 30th) my youngest sister flew in from Ohio. My mom & I picked her up and then went to my mom's house. Of course we stayed up way late talking until my sister just couldn't stay awake (it was about 3 am her time and she was exhausted!). We spent the next two days spending time together and getting very little sleep. But it was WAY worth getting the chance to see her. She left Sunday at 1:00 to go home--I miss her already =( Mon, 5 May 2008 02:28:24 EST Walking... Went on a LONG walk with my ds and neighbor today...we got walking and talking and not paying attention to how far or how long it had been. I got a pretty good sunburn...put some aloe on it. Hope I don't hurt too bad tomorrow. It was nice to spend some time chatting with her's SO nice to have good neighbors again!! Unfortunately we are supposed to drop like 25-30 degrees overnight--ick! I was so enjoying this taste of spring... Tue, 15 Apr 2008 01:35:22 EST Hiking Yesterday (Saturday) my son and I met some friends from one of my sparkgroups and went hiking. Our group consisted of 5 adults, 1 teenager, 2 young boys, 1 baby and 1 little doggie. We were all able to make it to the top of the climb and we were well rewarded with a great view of the valley (see the picture of myself, my son and my new friend CJSTAR). Sun, 13 Apr 2008 02:52:01 EST Report is in We got the report from the medical examiner's office on my dad's cause of death today (Tue 11th). The official cause of death was cardiovascular disease and diabetes with tobacco use contributing and was listed as natural. Wed, 12 Mar 2008 01:36:00 EST
