HEALTHY-SPARK's SparkPeople Blog HEALTHY-SPARK's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Someone once told me... Always have a plan. If life changes, then make a new plan.

It may seem simplistic, but I think it really speaks to the idea that you will never be able to plan for everything, and even when you think you've thought of everything -- something is bound to crop up in the middle of your well thought out plans.

So maybe that should read. Always have a few plans (e.g. Plan A, Plan B, Plan C, Plan D, Plan E, etc.)

I moved a few years ago for a new job and "new" life ... Sat, 9 May 2015 17:29:32 EST Ready for the beach! I'm heading to the beach for a long weekend -- really looking forward to the change of scenery and being away from work.

Today marks five full days of staying on track with calories and making healthy food choices. I've decided not to stress about adding in daily exercise this week -- I don't want to overwhelm myself with changes.

But a few days at the beach will result in lots of beach walking, so that will make up for the last three days of no exercise.

Wor... Thu, 23 Apr 2015 01:14:50 EST Staying on track - Feeling Optimistic Originally, I was planning on doing weekly blog entries, but I see it's been a bit longer than that already! Such is the nature of time sometimes.

Update on me: The last two-three weeks have been mostly trying to get into the right frame of mind for making big changes, and to slowly replace some bad habits with better habits. Additionally, I've been trying to put things in place that will help me along my path to success.

I didn't start in with tracking food until just... Mon, 20 Apr 2015 23:37:03 EST I'm back. March 29,2015 Yes, I did seem to fall off the face of the planet the last year here -- it's been a pretty rough year. I'm back now, and just got done revamping my SparkPage a bit. I've come to the conclusion that the last two and a half years have probably been my most unhealthy to date. While it's not a mystery to me what caused all of this, it does mystify me somewhat in that I feel I've just been watching myself spiral out of control as far as living a health lifestyle goes. The ugly truth is that I've ... Sun, 29 Mar 2015 23:10:42 EST Exercise and eating more. So, when getting re-revved up last month and setting up my fitness plan and diet plan on the SparkPeople account settings, I took notice of a new feature of the daily calories that takes into your daily exercise. Woohoo! Since I've been wearing my fitbit regularly, I thought this was great, even though I think the fitbit really overestimates the number of calories you burn (I'd be a string bean if what it said were true after this last month), I still thought an extra couple hundred calories ... Sun, 22 Jun 2014 11:19:58 EST In celebration of Maya Angelou I've always love this poem...

Phenomenal Woman

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
I say,
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you pl... Wed, 28 May 2014 11:14:25 EST New treadmill In the spirit of a clean slate, I am so excited for this weekend because I bought a new (used) treadmill that is being delivered on Saturday morning.

The last 6 months have been a pretty much abysmal failure as far as weight loss and healthy living go. I've really floundered. It is almost as if the whole thing sorta avalanches on itself, one bad choice leading to another and another to the point where I just didn't seem to really care at all. Ugh. So that's got to stop right here a... Tue, 29 Apr 2014 18:37:22 EST Getting back into the swing of things... So I fell off the Spark wagon a few months back from what was, in retrospect, fairly haphazardly committed plan anyways. Now with the New Year here, I've of course renewed my interest in losing weight and getting in better fitness shape. No matter how many times you fall down, none of it matters so long as you keep getting back up, right? Well that's me. I started here a little over a year ago, and had some initial very encouraging success, then well, not so much. The last 6 months have been ... Wed, 8 Jan 2014 15:40:46 EST The *secret* to fast, easy and effortless weight loss So this morning while I was vacuuming, I realized that my vacuum wasn't sucking up stuff very well, compared to when I first bought it. (I have one of those uber fancy vacuums specific for pet hair that I swore was one of the best things on the planet when I bought it.) I had cleaned the filter recently, so I was a bit concerned that my big investment wasn't all that I thought it was.

Enter Google.
387
Did you know you can learn just about anything on google... Sat, 9 Nov 2013 16:26:15 EST OK what is with all the naked people at the gym?? I have been on vacation from work this week, doing a stay-cation, which has been really great. Furthermore, I have been able to go the gym in the middle of the day, when less people are there, and really get nice long workouts in which also has been super great. (Usually I have to workout at the end of the day, after I finish working -- and oftentimes by then, my motivation really starts to drop off, especially now that it's getting dark earlier.)

So this has been great. But there'... Thu, 7 Nov 2013 16:30:39 EST You could learn something from this mouse!

se-vs-cracker/

I just want to hug this mouse for sticking with it!
Just keep trying! Fri, 1 Nov 2013 23:31:31 EST The wintry season is upon us! So it's mid-October already. Hard for me to believe that the holidays are peeping around the calendar corner. Well, according to all of my calculations earlier in the year, I'm supposed to be totally skinny by now and in the best shape of my life. lol. Well okay maybe not, but I did have high hopes much earlier this year to be further along than I am now. This last year has included a lot of trial and error and quite a few false starts before I realized how damaging my old habits could be whe... Sun, 20 Oct 2013 22:02:53 EST Two of my latest discoveries So my new weight loss plan has been partly helped by two new discoveries, which I will now share with each of you!

1) Buying a new car really helps with getting increased walking in.
Huh? Let me explain. So two and a half weeks ago, I finally bought a new car -- my first brand new car ever, it had 18 miles on the odometer when I got the keys. I needed a new car since my old one had too many miles on it. So preface here. I live in an apartment complex, without a dedicated parki... Mon, 23 Sep 2013 17:46:22 EST Oh just the usual type of morning for me... (long) Okay. so after my 5:30 am workout at the gym (body combat) -- YAY me for getting up and going twice a week in the mornings now. On the way to work, I accidently tried to break into the Air Force base here in town. See below for detailed story on what an idiot I am.

OMG. So this morning, I am working over at a different hospital than I normally work at. On the way there, there was so much traffic on the freeway, that I decided to get off a mile early, and avoid all the traffic (I sh... Tue, 17 Sep 2013 13:51:11 EST Starting over, yet again!! I have no one to blame but me *shakes finger at self*. On the other hand, after falling down the mountain for the umpteenth time, I am determined to climb back up again. I started Spark almost a year ago, and then really got down to business about 6 months ago and made some great progress with my fitness level and my overall health. I learned to run - my cardio fitness vastly improved, I learned how to plan ahead and put together a healthy meal plan each week - and make healthy choices and se... Sat, 7 Sep 2013 16:03:36 EST July Progress Report Not a great month (and yes, I realize it's not yet over) -- but hoping to turn things around with the remainder of the month (both diet and fitness wise)

This indeed has been kindof a crummy month. After my bug-in-the-eye-outdoor-running experience, I managed to break my toe a week later, and then find out that my poor cat is a diabetic and needs twice daily insulin shots, and then I found out my big motivating trip at the end of September has been cancelled. Maybe not for some, bu... Sun, 21 Jul 2013 01:36:31 EST My poor kitty is quite sick :-( Not fitness or weight-loss related blog:

So I'm really upset and sad. I found out on Sunday morning, that my 6.5 year old kitty (J Marley) has diabetes. Something hadn't quite been right with him the last two to three weeks, and I'd noticed he seemed to be drinking a lot more than usual from the kitty water fountain (and the litter box was a lot fuller and wet!). So on Friday I called for an appointment with his vet, and in the meantime, read all the internet info I could find on c... Mon, 15 Jul 2013 14:28:30 EST First outdoor run.. Kindof an epic fail.. Okay. So today after work, I decided to try a run outdoors since I just wasn't feeling the whole gym atmosphere, and it had rained earlier so it was kindof neat weather outside. I'd planned out a 3 mile trip and set out at a gentle pace.

First of all, running outside is a lot different than running on an indoor treadmill. But I figured it would be harder, and the first part of my jog was a hill, so I just plugged along pretty slowly and was definitely not feeling all that graceful ... Fri, 5 Jul 2013 23:26:25 EST Goals for July First off, I cannot believe it is the end of June and that 2013 is half way finished already.

That being said, it is the end of the month and it's goal-making time.
249
By July 31, my goal is to lose 6.0 pounds.
I will do this by committing to eating right, limiting sweets, and emphasizing exercise.
** My motivation is to act like I am "in training" for my upcoming vacation at the end of September that will involve hiking, so that I will be in bette... Sun, 30 Jun 2013 23:40:13 EST Kayaking totally rocked -- despite crazy 40 mph wind gusts But hey -- it was really fun. Nevermind the fact that the crazy monsoon wind made for some good resistance training opportunities on the water.

I felt so much more confidence on the water today -- after getting a bit freaked out when I did the whitewater kayaking weekend class, this was pretty much just class 1 rapids in recreational kayaking territory. Would like to repeat the whitewater class again this summer. So many activities to do and not enough time!

Several of u... Sat, 29 Jun 2013 23:56:02 EST Starting the weekend off right So this week I've been on a real fitness kick -- I actually love to workout, the problem I sometimes encounter though, is that for some reason I think working out for an hour entitles me to eat like an olympic athlete -- Uhm no. That doesn't work.

Anyway, this week has been going really well though, so I hope my enthusiasm and motivation will stay with me for awhile. Met all my nutrition goals today, stayed in calorie range, drank way more than my 8 glasses of water, and worked out... Sat, 29 Jun 2013 00:54:50 EST Ran 30 minutes straight -- first time ever. Woohoo! So I'm feeling totally awesome tonight. After work, I had a private ballroom dance lesson which was fun although a little frustrating as I'm out of practice. And then on the way home from that -- I was contemplating skipping the gym as I was tired -- but since it is right on the way home -- no excuses -- and I knew I'd feel great after working out. (it was the getting into the gym that was the toughest part.)

So as some of you know, I've been working on a running program since Marc... Wed, 26 Jun 2013 00:18:58 EST Philosophizing tonight.. (is that even a word?) Just had a really interesting discussion with a friend of mine from Phoenix that I haven't talked to in quite awhile.. so I'm in a very philosophical mood. Here's some quotes we were talking about.

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wis... Fri, 21 Jun 2013 01:36:51 EST Day 90: Rain!! I'm loving it. Okay, so tonight we had these great rainstorm -- complete with giant raindrops and crazy wind. I just loved it.

Did awesome with nutrition today -- although was getting a little snacky. I got up late, so grabbed a powerbar for breakfast rather than my planned yogurt, cereal and fruit -- which I think didn't fill me up the same way in the morning. But managed to get through it.

Went to Body combat class after work at my gym -- it was so great. What a great way to de-stres... Fri, 14 Jun 2013 00:25:02 EST Day 89: Going to feel my quads tomorrow..Kickstart going well. It's Wednesday, five days down of my 7 day kickstart and going strong!

I had my weekly 30 min session with my trainer tonight after work. Did some squats on a weird machine I hadn't used before where you are at an angle -- so that was good although tough, I'm still working my way to obtaining the strong legs I had at one time, but I will get there -- so I will likely "feel" those effects tomorrow and the day after.

Stayed on plan with nutrition today. Finishing up the l... Thu, 13 Jun 2013 00:41:29 EST Day 88: Off to a great start this week My internet service was down last night once I got home from the gym, so no blog yesterday, but I was completely on plan.
334

BUT, Yesterday was awesome -- nutrition-wise and exercise-wise (work-wise -- not so much).

Today. Work was much better. Nutrition was awesome and exercise was awesome (I finally made it back to where I was on my running schedule -- 12/1 x3 (plus warmup/cool down). So I just got back from the gym, and I'm totally excited I did it ... Wed, 12 Jun 2013 00:18:17 EST Day 86: Weekend Recap Ahhhhhh. I haven't had a totally free weekend like this in such a long time (not that I haven't been doing fun things on my weekends for the last 6 weeks, but it's been awhile since I wasn't slated for something all weekend.) So, this weekend made up for that, and to top it all off -- it was great weather outside.

Thankfully I had planned out how to get all of my cleaning "chores" done during the week, so once Friday came around -- all the laundry was done, all the dusting, vacuumi... Sun, 9 Jun 2013 23:50:57 EST Day 83: Surprisingly, my arms have not yet fallen off today Okay, so yesterdays TRX workout with my trainer was intense -- I thought for sure I wouldn't be able to move today. And not so bad, which I'm thankful for. We'll see how they are tomorrow.

Today was a little tough on the food choices -- we had a catered lunch due to an interviewing candidate -- and although the food options weren't entirely bad, there were some overly temping things like scalloped potatoes. YUM. I can't remember the last time I had those. And then we went to dinner... Fri, 7 Jun 2013 01:30:46 EST Day 82: A couple kayaking photos * Got 10 servings of fruits/veggies (mostly veggies) in today -- woohoo.
* Drank all my water. Woohoo.
* Stayed within my calorie/nutrient ranges.
* Went and did a short run before my trainer appointment. (It's slow getting back into the running routine -- but I'm working on it.)
* Had an awesome TRX workout, mostly upper body. (I'm pretty sure that my arms are going to both fall off sometime in the next 48 hours -- oof!)
* Household chores -- mostly done. Need to va... Thu, 6 Jun 2013 01:45:13 EST Day 81: Sticking to my plan... Okay, did great with sticking to my menu plan today.
Got in my running exercise today (although OOF, had to cut it down a bit -- not running for three weeks is hard to get back into the swing of things). So going to take this weeks running workouts slowly, until I'm back up to speed again.

Tomorrow is going to be another fantastically on-plan day. And then after work, I'm meeting with my trainer for a 30 minute workout. I'm was a little foo-fooey about only doing 30 minutes (a... Wed, 5 Jun 2013 02:01:53 EST Day 80: Off to a great start this week Busy week ahead -- but I'm planning for it.

Tomorrow is my first day back on my running schedule. Woohoo. Let's hope I get through it because it's now been two and a half weeks!

I can tell you that the lavendar oil fixed my sunburnt hands from kayaking -- I was actually pretty impressed that it worked (again).

I really don't have anything exciting for this blog tonight -- other than I did great with my menu plan, and stuck to it today. I've got a menu for the ... Tue, 4 Jun 2013 00:15:27 EST Day 79: Back from Kayaking -- getting ready for the week Whew. Two days of white water kayaking has really worn me out -- I had fun time. My arms are going to be sore I can tell already -- guess that just makes sense since my legs were so sore last week. Guess it all balances out. :-)

I don't have any kayak photos yet -- but hopefully will get some to post. I did well with catching eddies, and ferrying across the river. But got freaked out with "peeling out of eddies" in fast water -- so definitely will need to try that again when I'm le... Sun, 2 Jun 2013 23:13:19 EST Day 77: All packed for kayaking! Okay -- decided to stick with my original 'Day' numbers, despite going waaaay off track. But I guess the ups and downs are part of the journey -- and the "not quitting" is also part of that. So rather than do another "start over", I'm still here.

Well, after all of that -- the most exciting thing I have to report today is that I discovered one of my cats (probably Sasha), ate one of the plants in my open terrarium. Aack. So now I've got to basically re-do that entire one. It wasn't... Sat, 1 Jun 2013 01:41:08 EST Day: I'm not quite sure what day I should be on... Okay. Confession time. The last two weeks have been crazy busy. Kayaking, relatives, craziness. Going into it I knew it would be tough to get my exercise and running in -- and the food I was just going to have to do my best. Well, that pretty much all went out the window about a week and a half ago -- for various reasons. Although I did get some walking in. Ugh, so I feel like I've acutely decompensated over the last two weeks as far as exercise -- and I don't even want to see a scale for ano... Fri, 31 May 2013 01:00:24 EST Life Lesson: Be grateful for the here and now.. I read this sad but beautiful story on today about a 17 year old boy diagnosed with a fatal malignant bone tumor, and his decision to make the best of each and every day he had left.

Here is a link to the story:

h-viral-video-death/index.html?iref=al
lsearch

And a link to the song that he wrote which went viral:

We all have a te... Mon, 20 May 2013 22:32:24 EST Day 61: Today was a rest day, and I decided that my legs and body needed the rest! Especially as I've got stuff going for the next 4 days.

Thursday: fitness hike after work
Friday: Running 15/1 x2, then swing dancing
Sat-Sun: Kayaking/camping

I'm am so tempted to buy this "lot" of air plants I saw online -- they are SO cute (I love plants -- especially ones that are forgiving if you forget to water them). Maybe I'll wait until after Memorial day weekend....

... Thu, 16 May 2013 00:09:08 EST Day 60: Yikes! Running workout kicked my bootie tonight! Okay -- I've been trying to figure this out.

Tonight, I did my running program which was 14/1 x2 = 28 mins total running with one minute walking between intervals (which is 8 minutes less than the last run I did on Sunday which was 12/1 x3 = 36) -- and it just about killed me. Not only that, I was running MUCH slower than the last four runs that I've done. So here's all the variables that I could think of, which *hopefully* contributed to tonight's workout really kicking my bootie.... Wed, 15 May 2013 01:38:01 EST Day 59: Ugh
I like this quote about life that I found online...

Realized that I should up my deliberate weekly fitness minutes if I want to move things along.I think that I need to formulate some actual schedules for my off (running) days and cross training days, since I've been sorta winging it, which isn't always consistent. Good news that my work meeting was pushed back a week this Thursday, which opens up that night t... Tue, 14 May 2013 01:47:50 EST Day 58: And the start of a new week begins.. Not overly awesome on food choices yesterday and today -- mostly as a result of poor planning. So plan plan plan. I know better.

I took Saturday as a total rest day, and had the most relaxing and indulgent facial -- it was a nice treat at the end of my crazy week. My dance instructor flaked out on me again (I swear, half the dance instructors I've worked with are total flakes -- I may switch instructors, but this guy is the studio owner and he's good, he's just unreliable it seems)... Mon, 13 May 2013 00:23:56 EST I had no idea there were so many ways to tie your running shoes! Check out this great article that talks about common running shoe problems, and lacing techniques that help alleviate them!

-shoe-lacing-techniques/
Sun, 12 May 2013 00:00:09 EST Day 56: I made it through the week in one piece -- woohoo! Okay, so when my boss okayed me taking a week long spanish immersion class (8 hours a day), so long as I came into work at night and did all the work from the day that needed to be done -- I thought it would be a little tough, but probably worth it.

And it was SO WORTH IT. What a great week! (I can say that now that it's finished -- it's been a very very long week.) What I'm most happy with, is that not only did the class turn out to be awesome, but work went just fine without any ... Fri, 10 May 2013 23:36:42 EST Day 55: So glad that tomorrow is FRIDAY! Okay, almost finished with my crazy week. I'll be glad when Saturday comes around -- until then though, it's still full swing.

Decided to drive down to work during my two hour lunch break during the spanish immersion class (have I mentioned how totally awesome this class is by the way?!). Was able to work for about 45 minutes before having to leave and drive back (it's about a 25 minute drive each way). That was good though, since Thursdays are busy -- and today was busy, which is ... Fri, 10 May 2013 00:51:07 EST Day 54: The power of the Spark! So, when I first joined SP -- I was sorta just reading the website articles, and doing my own thing. I didn't really get too involved with the community side of things here -- big mistake!
198

Wow. So while I'm sure you didn't realize this, but today -- when I was in the midst of last leg of my running sequence -- my SparkFriends helped me stay motivated to finish it. Sounds a little strange maybe, but I envisioned my SparkFriends cheering me on, and posting those... Thu, 9 May 2013 00:47:59 EST Day 53: Trudging along... Okay -- crazy week starting to catch up with me today. Fortunately tonight I didn't have a ton of work to do after the spanish class all day -- (Tuesdays are usually the lightest day of the week as far as the workload goes -- hooray!). I am heading to bed shortly to try and replenish my energy stores for the remainder of this crazy week of mine.

Got some activity in at lunchtime walking around (nothing too stellar, but better than nothing).
Miscalculated my nutrition today -- ... Tue, 7 May 2013 23:45:43 EST Day 52: Crazy Week, Day 1 -- Recap Okay, so today was TOTALLY AWESOME.

I went to the first day of my Spanish immersion class which seriously rocked. So long as my brain doesn't turn to mush in the coming days, by the end of the week, I think I will have made some substantial progress in my learning. Plus it's FUN.

At noon, as scheduled, I went to the gym which was close to my class -- and this was a little surprising -- but during my running sequence for today -- I felt like a superhero (yeah yeah, maybe ... Tue, 7 May 2013 01:34:06 EST Day 51: Weekend recap and plans for the "cRazY" week Fun weekend -- did the 10k walk this morning. We were two of about 10 people who were walking the entire thing, which was a first for me -- usually, there are a lot more people walking it. Although we kicked butt, and even beat some people who initially started out running. I resisted the temptation to try running (didn't want to push things too fast which is what I've done in the past and then regretted it -- (so far my pace with the running program is workout out awesome) plus I was walking... Sun, 5 May 2013 23:44:39 EST Day 48: So much for a relaxing, quiet evening Who knows where my times goes. Seriously, at one minute I think I've got a whole free evening to spend relaxing and working on my much needed study time, then the next minute it's 10:30 at night. aack.

After yesterday's fantastic after work hike, this morning I was glad to wake up and have a "free" day as far as exercise goes -- although I just spent half the night cleaning/dusting/vacuuming/ doing laundry/doing dishes and making a salad starter -- so I guess that's where the nigh... Fri, 3 May 2013 00:37:56 EST Day 47: After work Hike! Today was my official "cross-training" day within my running program, so I thought I'd join some people and go for a fitness hike on a trail. We booked it up the mountain to the crest -- 2.4 miles and 2000 ft elevation gain, and I did it in 45 minutes. Woohoo. From there we turned around and went back the same way to the cars -- round trip 4.8 miles and 90 minutes hiking. WHEW. What a workout. It was great weather and SUPER luxurious to be able to do this in the middle of the week right after... Thu, 2 May 2013 00:01:18 EST Day 46: Kayaking Photos; & my thoughts on Water and Fitness Goals First, here's the kayaking photos from Sunday.

As if I could have found a more bulky life jacket to wear!

Okay for some reason the other photos won't load -- but you get the idea at least. This particular area of the Rio Grande had sorta muddy water which is why it's funny looking, but other areas were nicer (notice we only took pho... Tue, 30 Apr 2013 23:22:47 EST Day 44-45: And I'm off to another crazy busy week! Kayaking Sunday was a blast, all except for the little bit of flesh that I seemed to miss with the sunscreen -- so I've got a big blotch on my inner thigh that is lobster-pink, as well as a small patch on my inner ankle -- ow. Thankfully that's the ONLY places I got burnt. We paddled for about 4 hours on Lake Cochiti and up the Rio Grande. On the way back to the beach where we had parked, the wind kicked up something fierce and made for an intense core/back and upper body workout for about 45... Tue, 30 Apr 2013 02:22:40 EST
