It was my youngest son checking to see if we were ok. He'd already called his sister to see if they were ok. I asked if he was ok (of course) and he said yes, I am, but not the house. First thought was a fire, then he said straight line winds (less than a tornado) hit their place. Thankfully he was already on his way to work and wasn't hone so he called into work and went straight back home.
His roommate heard something, went dow... Thu, 11 Jun 2015 10:26:59 EST Wedding Day http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5775334 My son's wedding was beautiful yesterday. The weather was a perfect 75 degrees and sunny. The one glitch however, was that they were directly in the sun and shortly after the ceremony started Kyle told the minister (who is Erin's aunt) that he was "going down". My husband heard it and quickly grabbed a chair for him to sit on. We then got him some water. After sitting a few min. he seemed better. His face was very pale and he was sweating like crazy. I think it was hot and he hadn't eaten plu... Sun, 7 Sep 2014 18:59:39 EST Update on my friend http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5658107 Some of you have asked about my friend who had the stroke. He was sent to rehab in Chicago a couple of weeks ago. He is now able to walk using a cane held in the left hand. At first his leg wasn't working so this is great news. He hasn't had as much improvement with his right hand as he'd like. I'm not sure how well his speech is coming along but he is in speech therapy as well as occupational and physical therapy. His brother works with him during the day as well. It sounds like he'll be hom... Thu, 27 Mar 2014 20:44:47 EST Prayers for a friend http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5638887 I only lost a little over 3 pounds in February. I had a med change which caused 4 weeks of daily migraines. I also went out of town for a weekend and it took me a few days to get my food back on track. I'm close to 10 lbs. gone so I'm happy about that. I'm shooting for 8 lbs. lost in March.
A teacher friend of mine collapsed at school on Thurs. We had conferences that week and since we had worked 3 nights we were done at noon on Thurs. Thankfully he was still at school so someone could ... Mon, 3 Mar 2014 19:04:24 EST Jan. review/Feb. goals http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5612530 My goal for January was to lose 10 lbs. I lost 6.2 lbs. I didn't reach my goal, but I did do much better on nutrition and exercise. Nutrition has been much better. That's not to say I haven't eaten any junk, I have, but much less than I was. Exercise has been more consistent as well, but again, I can do better. Overall, both nutrition and exercise has improved and most days I track my food. I'm always one to want the weight to come off quickly so I'm focusing on being patient and making chang... Sat, 1 Feb 2014 22:02:54 EST Motivator of the Day? Thank you! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5610451 When I checked my mail this morning I saw that I was the motivator of the day. I'm not sure how that happened since I've only been back on plan for a few weeks. I have a very long way to go before I'm even close to my goal.
I appreciate all the comments, goodies, and friend adds that I received today. I'll weigh in tomorrow and post my Jan. results. I know I didn't reach my goal of 10 lbs. lost by Jan. 31, but I'm fairly close. More on that tomorrow.
Thank you again! Thu, 30 Jan 2014 18:04:00 EST More big news http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5606504 I knew this was coming, but now it's official. My son asked his gf to marry him last night. They've been dating over 2 yrs. She has been married before and has 2 little boys, one who just turned 6 and one who is 3, (she is 5 yrs. older than he is). I'm so proud of all he's been willing to take on in helping raise the boys. He just turned 25 two weeks ago. He didn't have the best example of how to be a husband and father growing up so I'm very happy to see how he treats his fiance and her boys... Sun, 26 Jan 2014 19:40:10 EST I can finally share my news http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5602755 My daughter and SIL announced they are having their first baby. I've known since Dec. 27, but was told not to share until they got together with family at all the belated Christmas celebrations. They've been married 7 yrs. and if I do say so myself, I haven't bugged them about having a baby at all. Now that they are though, it is exciting! Baby should be here around Aug. 5. Just one more wonderful reason to get healthy. My daughter has felt good and hasn't been sick at all. She did have the... Wed, 22 Jan 2014 21:20:09 EST Almost a Year http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5578665 Yes, it's New Year's Day, but that isn't the reason I'm writing this now. I realized it's been almost a year since I've blogged. Why blog when you're either gaining weight or losing the same few pounds over and over. On track for a few days, then way off track for more. I did "start over" again about 2 weeks ago. Staring over right at Christmas time is a good move isn't it? Anyway, I've lost 5 lbs. so far and gone up and down over break. I'm ok with it because I haven't gained 5-10 lbs. over ... Wed, 1 Jan 2014 22:12:27 EST January in review http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5232258 My goal in January was to lose 10 lbs. I lost 6 which is ok since I spent the entire fall gaining and losing the same 3 or 4 pounds. I spent a lot of the month working on building better habits, mainly exercising consistently and eating better. I've been pretty consistent with tracking my food but I still need to up my exercise in February. I'm making progress but some days are still a struggle to not eat a bunch of junk I don't need. I want to have between 30-40 lbs. off by the end of May wh... Thu, 31 Jan 2013 20:45:41 EST Today's update http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5186997 I started the day off with strength training, then started working on my basement. I went through some boxes, tossed some stuff, found some to sell or donate. I didn't get everything done, but I got a good start. Later I walked 45 min. on the treadmill. I go back to work tomorrow so I hope I can keep up with the workouts. Nutrition has been good for several days so that's a start! Wed, 2 Jan 2013 21:01:48 EST 2013 Goals http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5184582 I suppose I should write these goals down since everyone else is! This year I plan to accomplish the goals I set instead of just writing them down and doing nothing about them. At least the ones regarding weight loss.
Here goes:

Lose 50 lbs. in 2013 which includes losing inches and body fat
Learn to maintain weight loss (my biggest challenge!)
Improve my health by dropping my BMI & make my cardiologist happy in the process
Make time for hobbies
Spend more t... Tue, 1 Jan 2013 19:11:17 EST Week in review http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5153981 I lost 3 lbs. this week (first week back always shows a bigger loss) which I'm pleased about. I'm trying not to focus on all the pounds I still have to lose, but am taking it one week at a time. I did get more exercise this week, although the weekend wasn't as good as I'd hoped. I wasn't feeling that great on Sat. and didn't end up getting a workout in. I guess I needed the rest.
I got several gifts bought today and also got a start on my Christmas cards.
For those of you that rea... Sun, 2 Dec 2012 20:56:02 EST Santa Came Early http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5151948 I checked my mailbox at school this afternoon and found a letter addressed to me. Most of the time we get mail from within the district, not mail from outside. There was no return address which made me curious. I opened the envelope and found a Target Gift Card inside along with a letter. The letter talked about how this person knows how many hours I put in outside the school day as well as in the summer. It went on to say how lucky the kids and their parents are to have me as their teacher.... Fri, 30 Nov 2012 18:46:34 EST My weight loss has been similar to the football season http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5144324 I went to college at the University of Iowa and grew up near there so I'll always be an Iowa Hawkeye fan. I knew the season was going to be a rough one with young players and lots of injuries. I didn't have much hope for a very good season. Unfortunately, my prediction has come true. Early in the season some people were hopeful that the team would still do ok.
My weight loss efforts have been similar this fall. I didn't even try very hard earlier this fall because the start of the schoo... Fri, 23 Nov 2012 14:48:47 EST Day 3 and going well http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5085725 I started fresh on Monday and was very hungry by the afternoon. My stomach isn't used to eating smaller amounts. Just got back from a nice walk with my husband (who never goes along) and both our dogs. I didn't want to miss out on the last warm evening we're going to have for a while. I've stayed within my calorie range the past 3 days and I'm back to tracking. I haven't been as hungry the past 2 days to that's good! Wed, 3 Oct 2012 20:42:43 EST New month, new goals http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5081078 I've been up 2 lbs. and down 2 lbs. for what seems like forever. I want to work on building consistency in October, especially in the area of exercise. I was in such great shape a few years back and able to do a lot of exercise. Now that I'm so out of shape, everything is hard. I'm just going to do what I can. I know it will come back, it will just take time. My goal for Oct. is to get a minimum of 500 fitness minutes and to lose 10 lbs.
I have several events next spring that I want to ... Sun, 30 Sep 2012 19:52:20 EST R.I.P. We wondered if it would be hard to convince him to jump in the car. Before the thought was out of my mouth he was in the back seat with his head stuck between my daughter and I. Off we went for home. He had been at the shelter for 7 weeks, waiting for someone to bring him home. The vet guessed him to be 4 yrs. old when we got him. Aft... Sun, 1 Jul 2012 18:06:06 EST 2 days at Mayo Clinic with my daughter http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4863782 My daughter, who is 27, has tried several cholesterol meds over the last few months. She's had many side effects or they haven't lowered her cholesterol enough. It's a family thing with lots of early heart attacks & deaths. I've blogged about this before regarding my own situation. Long story short, we ended up staying an extra day for more tests. She had blood drawn twice, a chest x-ray, EKG, stress test, calcium scoring, and a scan of her carotid artery. I'm not sure I'll get this all strai... Wed, 2 May 2012 21:36:12 EST Job decision made http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4809641 I met with my special ed. director today and told her I had decided to stay in my current school and take the position with students with behavior disorders. I've received a lot of support while making this decision. I could wait a couple of months to decide if I want to, but I've already visited 2 other schools so I can't think of another position that might open up that I'd want. I love the school I work in and the staff is great. My associates have said they are willing to go with me to th... Wed, 28 Mar 2012 21:00:51 EST Back to work tomorrow http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4793827 Spring break is coming to an end. We couldn't have asked for a better week to have off. It was in the high 70's and low 80's most of the week. I got food prepped for the week and spent a couple hours at school today getting organized. Hubby and I rode the motorcycle Wed. and went out with some friends on Friday. I got several things done around the house, but not everything I planned. I got plenty of exercise and stayed with my nutrition plan which is usually difficult when I'm home a lot. Be... Sun, 18 Mar 2012 19:32:45 EST Update http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4786386 Doing fairly well in the nutrition and exercise department. I've lost 10 lbs. since I "started over'. The scale has bumped up a little this week but that may be because I'm back into lifting weights. I'm not going to stress over it because my eating has been good. I'm enjoying spring break with our gorgeous, over 70 degree weather. Some of my pants are getting loose so I got a few things today to get me by until I get into the massive wardrobe I have waiting for me (3 more sizes in boxes). Hu... Tue, 13 Mar 2012 22:29:27 EST Tough workout, but I did it http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4721976 I had a great week on the nutrition front and a good week on the exercise front. The results, a 1 lb. gain. I'll be 53 in a couple days and the weight goes up and down instead of just down. I've never had this problem before. Frustrating, but I know it will move if I keep up with the workouts. I wear a Go Wear Fit so I know I had a deficit everyday.
I bought a new workout a couple months ago and hadn't tried it yet. I felt like I needed to ease into it. Today, I decided I'd give it a go ... Sat, 4 Feb 2012 13:15:24 EST Good start to the week http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4713089 I started my morning meeting with my principal for my evaluation. It went really well. One of my students who has come so far this year reached one of his behavior goals and we can now drop it. What a big accomplishment for him!
It was a gorgeous 60 degree day so I went straight home and got a 60 min. walk in. It felt good to be outside instead of on the TM. Nutrition is right on track. This week is starting out much better than the last one did. Mon, 30 Jan 2012 20:40:09 EST Test results :) http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4707585 I got a call from the Drs office today. They said I had a normal stress test which means there are no arteries where the flow is restricted. She also said the heart muscle is working well. For now I just need to continue to lose the weight and exercise. What a relief! 198 If I can get my cholesterol back down they hope the plaque will hold steady and not increase. It will take some time, but I'll get this done. I get a blood test in April so my goal is to have my cholesterol back to... Fri, 27 Jan 2012 18:17:51 EST Test done, waiting on results http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4705665 I had my stress test this afternoon. I haven't worked out consistently in a long while (up until 3 weeks ago) so I figured it would be tough. I had to get my heart rate to 150 which wasn't a big deal at all. They like you to go above that number so you can jump off the TM, lay on a table, and give them time to take ultrasound pics before your heart rate goes down too far. I stayed on and got to 170 so I was pleased with that. They will call me with results at some point. I hadn't eaten much l... Thu, 26 Jan 2012 17:30:58 EST Stress Test Tomorrow http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4704204 I think I was so stressed out from Monday's appt. that I misspoke here. I'm not in the 90th percentile to have a heart attack, but I'm that likely to have plaque. It still holds that there could be blockages up to 90%. The stress test tomorrow will determine how the blood is flowing through my arteries or whether there are any restrictions. At this point I'm sort of confused.
I got my kids together last night and told them what my results were. Of course, they are worried, but I did get... Wed, 25 Jan 2012 21:54:30 EST A Big Thank You http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4701971 I was teary eyed this morning as I checked Spark and saw all the well wishes from my Spark friends. It reminds me how difficult it is to explain what this site is all about when people ask about it. Yes, it's a supportive community to help us lose weight and get healthy, but it's so much more than that. There are wonderful, supportive friends here. It is truly helpful to have your support and a thank you doesn't quite do it justice.
I gathered my 3 kids together tonight and told them th... Tue, 24 Jan 2012 20:52:13 EST I feel like a ticking time bomb http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4699624 The Dr. said I've gone from a 10th percentile to the 90th percentile as far as the chance of having a heart attack. Not good. I'm already on a lot of medications so that's not really an option. He said to lose the weight again, exercise consistently and hope that it doesn't continue to get worse. The calcium scoring only says there is plaque in the arteries, but it can't say how much blockage there is. There is no way to know without a angiogram, which they don't want to do at this point. I'm... Mon, 23 Jan 2012 18:37:50 EST Appointment tomorrow http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4697375 It's been a good week nutrition wise and a pretty good week exercise wise. Once I got my calcium scoring test back, eating junk lost it's appeal. I'm building up the exercise because I've let myself get so out of shape. It will take some time, but I have to do it.
I was able to get an appt. with the cardiologist tomorrow so I decided to take a little time off from work to go. I don't want to have to wait another 3 weeks to get in. My DH insists he's going with me. I told him I don't want... Sun, 22 Jan 2012 18:16:25 EST Rude Awakening http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4689950 Some of you may know that my family has a history of heart disease. I've known for many years that I have high cholesterol and have been on many medications for it. I had it down to 180 a couple years ago when I was exercising regularly and dropped 33 lbs. My numbers had gone up to 230 or so last year so I told the Dr. I would lose some weight and start exercising again. Instead, I gained some more weight and it's up to 257. I need to drop 40 lbs. at this point. I've been doing well the past ... Wed, 18 Jan 2012 20:47:57 EST Repeat of long term goals http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4649037 I wrote this list in August and did very little to achieve the things on the list. I've tweaked it a little, but most of it still holds true.

Long Term Goals

I am happy and grateful that I am 135 pounds
I am happy and grateful that I am a size 2-4
I am happy and grateful that I eat clean 90% of the time
I am happy and grateful that I can wear the new clothes I already own and love
I am happy and grateful that I can wear the clothes I want and feel goo... Sun, 1 Jan 2012 17:18:34 EST No resolutions http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4646850 I've been listening to a podcast called "Inside Out Weight Loss". It talks a lot about how to change from the inside so you can keep the weight off for good. She suggest making New Year's Evolutions. Not a bad idea. I don't have them all ready to write down and they really aren't resolutions. It's just time to get this weight back off and it happens to be the end of the year. I've said this many times and haven't done much about it. I want to lose about 40 lbs. I have a serious family history... Sat, 31 Dec 2011 16:17:08 EST Thanksgiving weight loss plan http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4599971 Unfortunately it includes getting the flu 36 hrs. before the big day. I was feeling well enough Thurs. to try and eat a little which wasn't a great choice. We were at the in laws yesterday so it was another 1 small meal day. I'm slowly gaining back some energy, but this one knocked me down pretty good. Thankfully my sweet hubby cleaned and made all the food while I layed in bed Wed. night. We'll see if I can actually stay on plan this week and lose weight the old fashioned way. Counting calor... Sat, 26 Nov 2011 12:14:55 EST Conquered my fear http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4565743 I've been meaning to write this blog all week and am just getting around to it. I bought coupons to an indoor rock climbing place several months ago. We had to use them last weekend because they were going to expire. Rock climbing is something I've always wanted to try so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity. I mentioned to my husband that I hoped I'd be able to do it because I'm afraid of heights. We've been together 5 yrs. and he didn't know this about me. Anyway, we went, took t... Wed, 2 Nov 2011 21:48:17 EST Going ok so far http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4553331 Here I am, 4 days into my latest "do over'. I've done pretty well. I was tired last night and it was getting kind of late, but I drug myself onto the treadmill. It's a lot harder than it used to be since I've been working out less than sporadically and am back to my heaviest weight. I wasn't fast, but at least I got it done. Nutrition has been going pretty well. I did go out with friends tonight and had 2 light beers. I didn't eat any junk even though I was hungry. I waited until I got home t... Tue, 25 Oct 2011 22:25:15 EST Weekend http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4549817 The weekend went pretty well. I didn't get as much exercise in as I'd like, but I did keep my eating under control. Not bad considering there are chips and other goodies in the house plus brownies and cheesecake from 2 of my kid's birthdays. I'm starting to feel a little more under control and the sugar cravings are going away. We'll see if I can start getting more exercise in this week. I started wearing my Go Wear Fit again just to get a feel for how many calories I'm burning. Just wearing ... Sun, 23 Oct 2011 21:38:00 EST Let's try this again http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4527455 How many times have I started over? Too many to count. Most of my do overs lately have lasted less than a week. I spent the day shopping and prepping my food for the week. I've already got it in my tracker for tomorrow. If I can stick to it for more than a day I'll be doing good. From there I need to start exercising consistently again. I think part of my problem is knowing how hard it will be to start from the beginning. I was in the best shape I've ever been in when I turned 50 and now 2 ye... Sun, 9 Oct 2011 21:41:57 EST Who me? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4470178 I have to say I'm feeling a little guilty today. I had an email this morning that said I've earned enough votes to have the spark motivator icon added to my page. I guess when you've been around for 4 years it's bound to happen! I've been feeling everything other than motivated or motivating lately. My plan to lose weight this summer, turned into a weight gain and I'm basically starting over. I will give myself credit for not giving up, no matter how far off track I go. I know eventually thin... Tue, 6 Sep 2011 20:00:24 EST My reasons why http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4412041 I've been on Spark for 4 years today. I'd love to say I'm a success story. I was for the first 2 years I was here. I was within 4 lbs. of goal and now I'm nearly back to my highest weight. Although I don't consider myself a success (yet) in the weight loss department, I haven't given up because I still receive support daily and I learn so much from all of you. I will say that I am successful at losing, just not at maintaining. I certainly drink more water, less diet soda, and less processed f... Sun, 7 Aug 2011 10:02:36 EST My reward system http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4410387 I did ok this week, but ate out a little too much and exercised too little. I have areas I can improve on in the next week, but I'm not going to beat myself up if I don't lose 20 lbs. in a month. I've tried that before and it doesn't stick. One more week and major structure comes back into my life when school starts. Mon, 1 Aug 2011 18:41:02 EST Daily Goals http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4397892 These are my current goals, which I plan to reevaluate after 4 weeks. I'll want to add more strength training, but my focus right now is to get nutrition under control and make exercise a habit again. I have to be realistic about the amount of time I have at the start of a new school year. I have the next 2 weeks to make it a routine again.

• Meet daily calorie requirements (adjust after 4 weeks)
• Eat every 3 hours
• Eat protein with every meal
• Eliminate carbs at ... Sun, 31 Jul 2011 16:25:07 EST Time to get real http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4396630 As much as I hate to admit it, I've regained nearly all the weight I lost on Spark in 2008. It's taken time, and my plan was to lose 20 lbs. this summer, not gain a few more. I hurt my back in July and I let myself eat whatever since I couldn't exercise. Of course, now I feel like crap and can't wear hardly any of my clothes. I wore the same few things last winter and don't want to have to do that again. I have a whole wardrobe of smaller clothes. It was so much fun to shop for whatever I wan... Sat, 30 Jul 2011 22:04:02 EST Changing habits http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4395057 Here is an article that I found helpful and thought I'd share. It has some interesting points.
Fri, 29 Jul 2011 23:34:51 EST Revamp of July goals http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4365305 I've been battling a pinched nerve in my back for 3 weeks. It was somewhat better a week ago and then we painted all weekend. Bad idea. That really aggravated the situation. I went to the dr. today and she prescribed muscle relaxers, pain meds, and no strength training or strenuous walking for at least another week or two. That means my goal of losing 10 lbs. in July most likely won't happen. I'll just have to do what I can in the nutrition department and try to walk a little here and there. ... Fri, 15 Jul 2011 20:14:29 EST July Goals http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4338043 I haven't done well the past 4 weeks. I was super busy in June teaching summer school, taking a math workshop, and another online class. I struggled to get into a good workout routine. July will be busy, but not quite so much so here are my mini goals for the month:
1000 fitness minutes
follow my nutrition plan
lose 10 lbs.
allow no excuses

I'm anxiously awaiting my son's arrival. He's on his way home from Phoenix for a visit. He graduated from tech school a we... Sat, 2 Jul 2011 23:10:19 EST Just Tuesday http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4254133 Day 3 of eating according to plan and nothing else. Workouts are going well too.
I should find out tomorrow whether I have to pack my whole classroom and move again or if I'm staying where I'm at. If I have to move it's one more thing to add to the summer list. Oh well, I'm sure it will burn some calories!
4 more days of school! I'm ready! (and then I start teaching summer school a few days later). Tue, 24 May 2011 20:52:46 EST
