GROEDER's SparkPeople Blog GROEDER's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Tough few months!! I feel bad that I have not been around since the first part of November. Two surgeries in that time have pretty much taken the spirit out of me for a while.
After my knee replacement around the first of November, I was out of action a lot longer than I expected, but it is coming along pretty well now. I am still doing therapy so I can get all the movement and strength back.
As soon as I was off the crutches, I had surgery on my hand. The Dr. cleaned up a mess in the joint between... Sat, 18 Jan 2014 13:25:32 EST Starting over I had the last re-check following my hand surgery yesterday. The Doctor said things are healing very well and that I can return to all of my normal activities, as I feel comfortable.

I decided that this is the perfect time to make some serious changes to my goals and routine, and work on making other changes in my lifestyle. So, today I will sit down with pen and paper and WRITE down the changes I want to make and what I will do to be sure they happen.
While I have not final... Sat, 18 Aug 2012 08:00:50 EST The Surgery Is Done - Now I Just Have To Let Things Heal It has been a week since my surgery. All I can do now is put up with the pain and do absolutely nothing with my right hand. Iwas supposed to have the cast put on Monday, but when they unwrapped it, my hand was still too swollen for that. All they did that day was remove the staples and stitches and change the dressing. I go back on Friday and get it checked again. If all is well, the cast will be put on so I can start the countdown to getting rid of it so I can start therapy.
The do... Wed, 23 May 2012 13:48:03 EST Surgery Tomorrow I am going to be out of action for a while. Tomorrow morning, I have surgery on my right hand (yes - I'm right handed) to replace a bone that is rubbing against the one at the base of my thumb.
The surgery is at a hospital about 3 hours from home, so I will stay there until the following week. Then they are going to check things out and put the cast on my hand and forearm. Luckily, my sister and brother-in-law live there so I will stay with them. It will be nice to see them, and to d... Mon, 14 May 2012 07:30:01 EST All my biking goals accomplished (for this year)!! It was snowing. The temperature was 29 degrees. The wind was 22 MPH . I was out riding anyway.
Today I rode 15 miles and accomplished the last of the goals I had set for myself for the (short) North Dakota biking season.
This is a list of the goals I worked on this year:
1. Buy a bike and start riding again after nearly 40 years. Got a new Trek Navigator 2 in January. Then I had to just look at it until the snow was gone in April.

2. Start a biking routine a... Sun, 13 Nov 2011 16:33:42 EST A gift to myself I turned 60 years old today!!!!!!!
Yesterday I gave myself a very important birthday gift that will stay with me forever. I gave myself a lesson in what is possible with a positive attitude and determination.
Shortly after my knee replacement surgery in June, I decided it would be a good exercise in my ability to access my capabilities if I were to ride my bicycle 60 miles on or before my birthday. Well, yesterday was the day!!!!
About a month ago, I told some people about m... Sun, 23 Oct 2011 05:55:00 EST I can't believe I did this!!! I just came in off the bike path and checked you trip meter. I found that I have ridden 754 milse so far this summer!!!
That may not seem like much for a summer of riding, but 2 1/2 years ago if I had been asked to go biking, I might have made it to the end of the driveway!
Now, 160 pounds lighter and with a new knee ( which I got on June 17th of this year), I have my sights set on 1000 miles before winter comes to North Dakota.
I put 500 miles on new Trek Navigator 2 before ... Mon, 19 Sep 2011 21:25:24 EST Six weeks ago..... It has been six weeks since my knee replacement.
Everyone says I'm doing great, but I'm not so sure!!! There is still a fair amount of pain when I do therapy, I haven't been given the ok to ride my bike, and I can't completley straighten my leg or flex it as much as the Doctor wants. I am only able to straighten it to about 7 degrees and flex it to about 109 degrees (he wants me at completley straight and to at least 115 degrees for bend).
On the positive side, I am able to take O... Fri, 29 Jul 2011 06:39:00 EST Now for the HARD part!!!! My surgery went well. All the new parts fit and are in place. Now all I have to do is the rehab so I can get back to the activity level I was at before and then move forward.
Actually I got home last week, but was very surprised how much the surgery took out of me, and how much pain is involved. Today is the first day I have even sat at my computer long enough to write anything. I can't imagine how it would have been if I had not gotten myself into the condition I was before going... Mon, 4 Jul 2011 15:59:41 EST Leaving early in the morning I will be leaving early in the morning on the 16th to go to Fargo. I have to stop and do a number of things is Grand Forks on my way to Fargo. I am taking my bike to the shop for the 10 hour check on cables etc. I'm about 25 hours over the time!!!! I guess I got a little carried away, but I have been on it for a total of 35 hours since the weather got good enough to ride this spring.
Otto is already at a friend's playing with their beagle, so they both should have a good time while I... Wed, 15 Jun 2011 23:31:14 EST Three days to go!!! I have one more day of work, then go to Fargo the next, and have my knee replacement the next day (June 17th). I don't know how long I will be there until they give me the ok to drive the 180 miles home, so I won't be on the internet for a while.
They say I will likely be in the hospital until Monday, June 20, and then I will be staying with my sister and brother-in-law for at least a day or two. Luckily, the replacement is for the left knee, so I can operate the accelerator and brake ... Tue, 14 Jun 2011 21:07:11 EST My dinner date!!! I think everything went well when I cooked dinner for my friend. At least, I had a good time!!! I got to cook and had some one to talk with while I was doing it!!
The big question of the evening was, "you are going to deep fry WHAT??!!" HAHA
When I showed her the wash and dredge I put the pickles and olives through, she was surprised. And when she tasted the end result, I could tell I had a new fan!!!!
Everything else was well recieved too (especially the stuffed mushrooms)... Mon, 13 Jun 2011 07:14:15 EST Dinner menu for my date tonight I am having a new friend over for dinner tonight. I thought I would share the menu I am planning to make.
For the first course I am making marinated mushroom caps that I will stuff with Italian sausage and mozzarella. Then I sprinkle with grated parm and put them under the broiler just long enough to melt and brown the cheese. With them I will deep fry (I KNOW - NOT GOOD!!!!) dill pickl spears and green olives.
The main course will be my own idea of crab, shrimp, and coconut cu... Sat, 11 Jun 2011 10:05:02 EST I have switched addictions!!!!!! On May 10th (a date dear to me as it was the second anniversary of the beginning of my SparkPeople journey) I stopped smoking, an addiction I have had for over half of my life!!!!! I am very sure that many of the things I have learned about myself through SparkPeople have helped me overcome the cravings, urges, and all that go along with ending this habit, but I have to confess that I replaced it with another addiction!!!!!
I have become addicted to riding my bike!! I ride it every day... Sun, 5 Jun 2011 12:59:18 EST Two years ago today...... I knew I needed to do something about my weight and health, but WHAT???
I found SparkPeople very much by accident while looking for weight loss web sights. Nothing in my life has been the same since that day!!!!!!
I just thought I would list a few of the changes that I have seen in the last two years:
1. Weight reduction from 320 pounds to 160 pounds.
2. Medications from 8 per day to 2 per day.
3. Shirt size from 4X to medium.
4. Pants size from 48 to 32. <B... Tue, 10 May 2011 06:39:43 EST Good Doctor Visit I spent Tuesday driving the 3 hours from Devils Lake to Fargo to see a cardiologist about the results of the stress test I had 2 weeks ago. My friend (and primary doctor) told me the results were not completely "normal", so he wanted me to see a specialist.
After reviewing the report, asking all kinds of questions about my activity level and any symptoms (which I DO NOT have), listening to my heart, and checking pulses everywhere, he told me the good news.
He said that although the... Thu, 5 May 2011 06:35:52 EST An act of love Yesterday I was on the receiving end of a random act of kindness!!
I got a phone call at work from a lady whose name I did not know (that happens often, since I have a bad memory for names). When I answered the phone she said, "you don't know me and I don't know you. I was talking with the pastor's wife and asked her if she knew of anyone who might be alone at Easter, and she gave me your name. My husband and I were wondering if you would like to join us for dinner on Easter Sunday". ... Sat, 23 Apr 2011 07:08:03 EST Good day at therapy I saw the physical therapist today for more work on getting movement in my knee before my replacement surgery. She checked my range of motion and said, "your doctor is going to love you".
I have gone from 80 degrees to 115 in just over 3 weeks. The doctor wanted me to get to at least 100 before the surgery.
I told the therapist that my knee really hurts and she gave me a little laugh and told me she doesn't have to say it to many of her patients, but I'm an exception. "Back off... Thu, 21 Apr 2011 22:40:27 EST Two months to the new knee!!! Last week I got the date for my knee replacements scheduled. I will be having it done on June 17. That is a longer wait than I wanted, but that was the first opening my surgeon had.
While I wait, I will continue with the pre-op therapy he has me on and work out as much as possible. I want to be as ready for rehab as possible so I will be able to be more active for at least part of the summer.
The pain is too bad to walk much at all, but I can ride my recumbent bike indoors and... Sun, 17 Apr 2011 07:36:48 EST Chocolate Everywhere!!! Our local Lion's club hosts a fundraising event each year in a private meeting room in the former city library, which is a designated historic building. The event is called "Lions at the Library" and features a different catagory of food and drink each year. This year, in honor of Valentines day, we had a Chocolate and Champagne night.
The event included a wide range of homemade ( by the club members) chocolate and sweet "treats" served buffet style, and a number of different champagne... Sat, 12 Feb 2011 08:36:30 EST The blessings keep coming!! The Biblical character Jabez said in the beginning of his very short prayer in 1 Chronicles, "Oh, that You would bless me, indeed, and enlarge my territory.....". He was asking that God give him everything that He saw fit and help him use it to help others.
Since the first time I saw that prayer, I have been sincerely praying it every day and the results are amazing!!
I am not a minister by any stretch of the imagination but I feel the need to share just a few examples of what the... Sun, 26 Dec 2010 10:53:36 EST I shook up my body! After about a few weeks of very little changes, I decided it was time to shake things up a bit. Between vacation and being sick off and on my progress slowed to the point where I was feeling some frustration. So...I changed a lot of things.
The first thing I did was leave little reminders on cupboard doors, the refrigerator, etc. to think about what I was doing at meal and snack time. It is amazing what seeing my notes (in my own handwriting) does to improve my thinking!!!!
Sec... Fri, 12 Nov 2010 05:54:36 EST I WILL make it!!!!! I have had a month of not moving the scale (although I'm very pleased with all other aspects of staying healthy). Here are the reasons for the plateau (REALLY, they are excuses!!!): I went on vacation for about a week and could not cook for myself. I have had a nagging head/chest cold for about 2 1/2 weeks, which has really sapped my energy. The weather changes have kept me inside more than I have become used to.
last week I made a few changes - new weight training routine, walking a... Sun, 31 Oct 2010 10:46:26 EST I MESSED UP - and I know better!!!! I'm very upset with myself! I have worked very hard to get to this point in my journey to losing weight and getting healthy. Last week I got lazy and didn't follow my plan the way I usually do. The result - put back two of the pounds I had lost!!!
I didn't track food as acurately as I should have (I ate out more often and wasn't sure of the values). I also made some stupid decisions on what to eat.
You could call my weigh-in this morning a wakeup call, and writing it down serves... Sun, 3 Oct 2010 06:57:33 EST Half the man I used to be! The math was easy. I started my journey to a healthier lifestyle at 320 pounds. Today at my weekly weigh-in, the scale rested at 160!!!!! To be absolutely sure I wasn't dreaming, I weighed myself three times. It came up 160, 159.5, and 160. It is very difficult for me to grasp that I have actually cut my weight in half, but I'm calling it official since I have been very consistant on how often, time of day, and everything connected to my weigh-ins.
I am now very close to my final we... Sun, 26 Sep 2010 07:40:33 EST Good Things Continue I have recently had some very nice things happen to me as a result of my continuing journey to becoming healthier. I decided to write them down as a reminder (mostly to myself) of what can be accomplished with a little work, and a lot of concistancy.
Fisrt, I continue to lose pounds and inches. The only down side to that is that I am always in need of different clothes that fit!! LOL The clothes I was given a few weeks ago by a person I hardly knew, was a great gift. Unfortunately, t... Sun, 5 Sep 2010 11:53:36 EST Front page news!! I recently visited with the editor of the Devils Lake Journal (our local newspaper) about an article for a project the Lions Club was doing. During our visit, she commented on my weight loss and asked me what I had done to have such success. That was all it took for me to start talking about my transformation. In a very short time she stopped ma and said, "we need to do a feature story. When can you come back so we can do an interview about YOU?"
The next week she called and we set i... Fri, 13 Aug 2010 05:28:24 EST I'm Actually WALKING!! To most people going for a walk probably doesn't sound like a big deal. Well, I happen to disagree. A year ago, I wasn't able to walk to the end of the block without stopping because of pain in my knees and hips! Three months ago I could almost make it around the block. I was doing some bike riding, to get some cardio exercise, but I gave myself this "crazy" goal of RUNNING a 5K by my 60th birthday in October of 2011.
When I told a friend about my goal, she gave me a pedometer and I ... Sun, 18 Jul 2010 05:55:29 EST I must have made a mistake!! When I weighed in last week I read the scale as 188 pounds, a gain of 3 pounds from the 185 the week before!!! I didn't like it much, but wasn't really discouraged since I have been working hard on strength training and gaining muscle. Well, this morning I weighed in at 179! I have been working hard at staying on track, but I don't believe that I did anything different enough to drop 9 pounds in ONE week. I actually re-did it 3 times, with the same results. All I can guess is that last w... Sun, 11 Jul 2010 09:40:13 EST Two new fitness goals I have added two long term goals that I know will greatly improve my health!!! They also go hand-in-hand with reaching the one another.
1. Stop smoking (COMPLETELY) by July 1st. As the old joke goes, "I have quit thousnads of times", but this time I WILL be done for good! I will have a lot of help reaching this goal because of goal number 2.
2. I will be 60 years old in a year and 3 months. My birthday present to myself will be to run a 5 K race and finish. I have never run (... Sun, 20 Jun 2010 09:37:55 EST People are talking!!! I had to share an experience I had yesterday at work. As an optician, I spend the day helping people with their eyewear, which includes fixing problems.
Yesterday a very nice lady (who I had never seen before) came to the office in need of a repair, which I was able to do quite easily. As I was cleaning her lenses she introduced herself as a new Doctor at the clinic where I go. Then she asked, "are you the one who they are talking about, who lost all the weight? They say you did it a... Sat, 19 Jun 2010 13:15:22 EST Great week! I had a very productive week and am really feeling like I can be more active.
Since I had my knee scoped on the 20th of May, it feels much better. I waited a week and started riding my recumbent bike again, with much less pain. I even went walking for a few minutes and didn't have to stop to let it feel better!
Yesterday, I sealed and stained my deck and planted my vegetable garden. I have never planted anything before, so I'm guardedly hopeful for fresh produce this summer. I... Sun, 30 May 2010 07:23:57 EST It is hard to go slow now!! I feel GREAT!!!! I am so amazed at how good my knee feels already (had the arthroscopic surgery 3 days ago) that every time I look at my recumbent bike, I have to fight the urge to hop on and ride it! LOL It is going to be a long 10 days until I see the Dr. and get official approval to get back to it. In the meantime, I will do some walking outside, clean up my old (real)bike and get ready to go outdoors to ride.
Of course, I will be doing my other activities. I can still strength tr... Sun, 23 May 2010 08:14:20 EST Knee surgery yesterday - workout today!! I had my arthroscopic surgery on my right knee yesterday morning. Everything went very well and I left the surgery center at 3:20 PM. The Doctor told me I could put as much weight on the leg as I was comfortable with as soon as I could. I was using crutches for the rest of the day, but switched to a cane this morning.
Since I was feeling good and today is my day for upper body strength training, I borrowed my brother in law's dumbells and did 8 of the 10 exercises I had scheduled (wit... Fri, 21 May 2010 12:42:35 EST Doctor week for me! This morning I will make the 2 1/2 hour drive from home to Fargo, ND for a bone density scan and to visit with my friend about lab results from the physical he gave me last Friday. Then tomorrow morning my sister and brother in law will take me to the orthopedic center for my knee surgery. I thank God that they live there so I can stay with them after.
I am having arthroscopic surgery to clean all the "junk" out of the joint, so it is same day surgery and the recovery time should be sh... Wed, 19 May 2010 05:13:12 EST I did it all myself I am very happy with the progress I have made over the past year, but there are bumps in the road on any journey. I encountered on last week - that I put there myself. I stepped on the scale this morning and found that I had gained back 3 pounds that I have worked so hard to lose!! And I did it all myself!!!!! I got lazy about portion control, tracking everything, and stopped thinking about what I KNOW is right for me. Now I have the opportunity to use the advice I always give to others ... Sun, 16 May 2010 09:29:44 EST One year done........122 pounds GONE!!! I started my journey to a healthier life on May 10, 2009, stumbled onto the SparkPeople website by accidnet, and tried it out of despiration.
One year later, I feel (and look) like a diffrent person.
Some of the physical changes I have made are:

Start ----------------------------------- After 1 year
Weight 320 lbs. ---------------------------------- 198 lbs.
Shirt s... Sun, 9 May 2010 07:28:47 EST The temptations felt non-stop! Last week was one filled with one temptation after another. Three of the five days at work felt like they were designed to test me. Here is how it went:
Monday - Started bad by oversleeping, but I did get in my workout before work.
Tuesday - Boss's birthday so people brought in food. There was a strawberry pie and a chocolate and cool whip cake with crushed Oreos on top. My reaction: An apple and 1 oz. of almonds for snacks and a happy birthday wish for the boss!!!
Wednesd... Sun, 2 May 2010 10:08:02 EST Back on my bike!! Until this week, I hadn't been able to ride my recumbent bike since Easter when I injured my knee. That meant virtually no cardio since I could barely walk either. I tried it on Monday for a few minutes (25) and although it wasn't easy, I was able to do it!!
Yesterday I saw the Dr. to get things checked out and he gave me the ok to ride it regularly again. That was the good news!!! He also scheduled me for surgery on the knee for May 20. It isn't the replacement surgery that is goi... Wed, 28 Apr 2010 05:47:25 EST The biggest cookie I ever saw! Yesterday, being Administrative Assistant Day, the Drs. I work for got a very nice boquet for everyone in the office ( except me, since I am the only male in the place). They know where I buy my coffee beans, so I got a gift card from that coffee shop/bakery. They also had the bakery make a cookie for everyone to share. That thing was huge - about a half inch thick and 12 inches in diameter!!! It even had "Thank You" written in frosting.
The gesture was very nice and the cookie looke... Thu, 22 Apr 2010 06:41:12 EST Mixed Emotions Today I feel really good - and then again, I feel bad. How can that be?
First the bad. The two week old knee injury I got while working out just isn't getting as much better as fast as I had hoped. I still can't do much for lower body strength training, and riding my recumbent bike is impossible (yes - I had to try yesterday just to prove that I am stupid LOL). I'm still wandering around on crutches and really tired of the pain.
Now that the "pitty party" is over, I DO have some... Sun, 18 Apr 2010 08:32:42 EST 11 months today - What happened? On May 10, 2009 I started my journey with SparkPeople, searching for a way to finally lose weight. Now, 11 months later, I have lost 117 pounds, reduced pants size by 14 inches, and wear shirts without a big X (or several X's) attached to the size! The biggest question I hear now - and ask myself -is "How did this happen?"
My friends, coworkers , and certainly my Doctors are absolutely amazed! Their amazement is only exceeded by my own.
My energy has increases greatly, I have h... Sat, 10 Apr 2010 08:44:06 EST Third day WITHOUT a workout!! I think I'm having fittness withdrawl!!!!! The only workout I have had since Saturday is getting around with the help of the borrowed walker I am using after injuring my knee (while working out).
I can't get onto my exercise machine or ride my recumbent bike, so I have resorted to isometrics and resistant bands for upper body. That is better than nothing but FAR from what I am used to.
I did get in to see my orthopedic surgeon yesterday and found no further damage to the bones in ... Wed, 7 Apr 2010 10:47:29 EST My terrible weekend I started my weekend with great expectations for a wonderful Easter weekend. That came to a very sudden stop during my usual morning workout!! As I was doing my lsat set of knee bends, I heard (and really felt) something pop in my right knee!! The pain was brief but very intense.
By noon, it was very swelled and the pain was so bad that I would not put any weight on my right side. late afternoon I got a ride to the ER where got a shot and some pills for pain and the wonderful advi... Mon, 5 Apr 2010 08:52:35 EST Less weight - Smaller clothes - More comments I finally got the new pants I had ordered (and had to exchange for smaller ones ) last week. They are just a little snug, but work fine. I don't mind the fit because I know they won't be snug for long. After all, they are size 34 waste!! 10 1/2 months ago I was squeezing into size 48!!! Shirts are a very comfortable XL now instead of the XXXL of old!
Today's weigh-in showed a loss of another 4 pounds (now a total of 108).
The positive comments just keep on coming!! When people... Sun, 21 Mar 2010 07:29:49 EST Unexpected Prize First things, first - I just had my weekly weighin. The scale didn't move this week! But, I'm still happy. I am still on my average of 2 to 3 pounds a week and I'm still shrinking.
That brings me to my big prize. I badly needed to find a new winter jacket, since all of mine are way too big for me. I had a bag of old clothes to take to the thrift store for a donation yesterday. While I was there I decided to look for a jacket. What a find!! There on the rack was a perfect leather... Sun, 14 Mar 2010 07:02:00 EST Over 100 pounds - GONE!! The logical side of my brain says that the numbers on the scale are not all that important, but when I stepped off the scale this morning after my weekly weigh-in, I was jumping for joy inside. Just knowing that I have been able to lose 104 pounds (so far - not finished yet) was a great feeling!!!
But that is just icing on the cake! The great things that I have learned, the people I have met on line, the way my health has improved, the changes in my appearance, and the good feeling ... Sun, 7 Mar 2010 07:09:52 EST New clothes have to go back Yesterday I got some new pants I had been waiting to be sent. It took about 10 days from the time I ordered them before they arrived. Well today I am sending them back and exchanging them for a smaller size! The pants I I ordered were 2 sizes smaller than the ones I am currently wearing, so I thiught I would be safe for a while. WRONG!!
Since it will probably take at least 2 to 3 weeks to send them back and get the replacements, I am going to go for another 2 sizes smaller. That w... Thu, 25 Feb 2010 07:28:52 EST Finally! After 3 weeks with a total weight loss of only 1 pound, my body finally caught up with the increases I have made in my exercise and activity. With a recent change in my strength training, I can tell I have been steadily building muscle and can see by my clothes that I am losing fat (which is exactly what I want to do). Since muscle weighs more than fat, I wasn't surprised to see no real changes in my weight, but it is still great to see the results there too.
I just stepped off the sca... Sun, 21 Feb 2010 05:25:40 EST Feel better now This morning I woke earlier than usual and just didn't feel right. Not that I was ill, I felt distracted and and out of sync. I sat at the computer and read some very informative and motivational articles and blogs which helped some. Finally I decided (half-heatedely) to start my workout.
Now I have done my strength training and spent 40 minutes on my stationary bike with good reading material, had breakfast, and I FEEL GREAT!!! I guess, for me, what it takes is to get moving and d... Sat, 20 Feb 2010 07:24:54 EST
