GRETEL1128's SparkPeople Blog GRETEL1128's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Germany again! It seems like I only post when I am about to go on another Trip. It's back to Germany again and at weigh in this morning I weighed 143 lbs or 64.9 kg.
Since the last Trip to Germany, which happened to be the coldest January / February that anybody I spoke to can remember, we have been on a Cruise. So I feel good about my current weight. I always watch what I eat, even when I am away from home. Granted, sometimes it is not possible for me to log exactly what I eat, but at least I make an ... Wed, 16 May 2012 09:00:57 EST Time to reflect In the nearly two years I have been a Member of I have managed to shed 10 % of my original body weight - twice.
I am working on my 3rd 10% now.
Today I am leaving for a trip to Germany for 4 weeks. I just hope that my Mom's good Cooking does not set me back too far. I just know that I won't be able to resist some of the foods she prepares. But I promise to drink my 8 cups of Water daily, go to Water Aerobics twice a week, and at least make an attempt to walk a mile a... Wed, 25 Jan 2012 09:19:28 EST Dear Blog, I apologize....... I have been lax in writing.
I'm not going to make excuses, just some explanations.
I have worked out, have been eating (mostly) right. Just have not input the data into SparkPeople.
This must change.
We just returned from a cross country trip with our 2 Grand Daughters (15 and 4 years old). The Trip took us to quite a few National and State Parks.
Palo Duro Canyon, Texas.

Mount Rushmore, S... Tue, 9 Aug 2011 16:15:55 EST In Memory of Hans Herrmann
My Parents at my Dad's 75th Birthday. He was born Feb 25, 1918. He passed away April 9, 2011. Mary he rest in peace.

I've been to Germany twice this year, just got back Wednesday April 6, and now I am going back for his Funeral.

Needless to say, I have not been eating the "SparkPeople" Way and will really have to buckle down and get back with the Program once I get back from this Trip. Mon, 11 Apr 2011 03:58:47 EST Travels Here I am, back from Germany for not quite 2 weeks, and nearly lost the weight I gained while eating my Mothers wonderful cooking and the good German bread while I was there for 2 weeks. And now I am going back to Germany, this time without Hubby and for 3 Weeks. My Dad is not doing well and I want to be there and help my Mom. I will try to restrain myself from eating too much of the Bread this time. I just have to tell myself that one slice is enough. It will be hard.
Wish me luck. Mon, 14 Mar 2011 08:46:25 EST It snowed in Texas

This is not normal for us. My Husband's Therapy was cancelled. They called us at 7:30 am to let us know. When I stepped outside we had about 4 inches of Snow on the Ground, so needless to say I did not go to Aqua Aerobics either.

I hope the Snow melts real fast. I don't like the cold. Sat, 5 Feb 2011 01:27:17 EST TGIF Today I went to Water Aerobics earlier than usual, since I wanted to go with some friends to lunch. We went to the Victorian Lady Tea Room. I had never been there and I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. I am certain this was not my last visit there. Fri, 28 Jan 2011 22:57:53 EST A New Year has begun! Good Morning everyone!
When I started SparkPeople in February 2010, I was 51 lbs off my "ideal" weight of 136 lbs. My goal was to lose those lbs by February 28 of this year for my 42nd Anniversary.
Since then I have been on a few vacations, which really did nothing towards my weight loss goal, but I have stuck with it, religiously tracking my food intake and managed to lose that first 10 % of my body weight. I added exercise (Curves) and lost more. Now it has been 11 months and I am... Tue, 18 Jan 2011 09:52:32 EST Successes and Failures Our Christmas Vacation is over.
I gained nearly 2 lbs, because all our relatives had to have us over for dinner or took us to dinner and the amount of good food was just overwhelming.
On a positive note: during a Swedish Pancake Breakfast at my Sister in Law's Church another one of my Sisters in Law remarked on my ill fitting jeans. (I was wearing my comfy ones, which were very loose.)
Well I decided to go shopping and get myself a pair of Jeans that fit. I am used to buying s... Mon, 27 Dec 2010 19:04:14 EST Blue Monday Weighed myself this morning and did not lose any weight last week. On the bright side, I did not gain any either.
Baked 2 Banana Nut Breads yesterday, took one with me to Curves this morning to share with everyone. Tomorrow will be my last day at Curves. I am going on Vacation on Wednesday, and by the time I get back, the local Curves will have closed. I sure miss all the ladies I have been working out with these past 2 months.
In the process of packing carry ons for our trip. Sure ... Mon, 13 Dec 2010 18:01:45 EST Today was a good Day I went and had my last blood work for this year. My Hemoglobin actually came up slightly to 8.5 and I won't have to have another transfusion at this time.
Went to Curves and worked out, had all good meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner and now I am tired and think I will go to sleep.

Good night! Thu, 9 Dec 2010 23:46:26 EST Pssst, don't tell anyone. It's true, I am really losing weight, and not just weight, inches around my waist and hips as well. I actually had to go out and buy, not a new wardrobe, I still have clothes around from when I was a bit less weighty, but I had to buy new underwear, because the old size 9 and 8's literally fell off my hips. I am now in 7's and 6's and for the first time in my life, I bought other than white ones!!! That was a major step for me.
I also got me a pair of new workout shoes.
It's gettin... Tue, 7 Dec 2010 23:54:53 EST After Thanksgiving Good Evening!

I survived the Holidays (Thanksgiving and my Birthday). Ended up cooking both days, on Thursday it was just Hubby and I and I prepared Chef Meg's Herb roasted Turkey with Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes, green Beans, and Cranberry sauce. It was yummy.
Sunday (my Birthday) all the Kids came for Dinner and I made a Ham, Oven Roasted Root Vegetables, Fingerling Potatoes and Gravy. Then of course I had to have a piece of Birthday cake, but I took it easy and only had... Tue, 30 Nov 2010 19:38:44 EST I joined Curves I finally decided I needed to do something in the way of exercise, so I printed out the free Week's Coupon and went to my local Curves.
I plan on going Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.
Unfortunately the local Franchise is closing at the end of the Year, so I will have to travel to get to the nearest location. I hope that will not be a deterrent for me.
Thu, 28 Oct 2010 15:37:38 EST Today I spread the Spark! Today I saw my PCP the first time in about 3 months. He commented on my weight loss and asked me how I was doing it. I had brought a print out of yesterday's full report as well as printouts of my weigh-ins and other items I measure.
He was very impressed with the detail that is available and said that he would recommend the site to any of his patients that ask for weight loss advice.
I am able to get rid of 2 more pills I used to take, since they are no longer needed with my curren... Fri, 22 Oct 2010 00:57:28 EST Vacation is over The Cruise was wonderful.

But, I did not do as good as I had hoped.
The morning after we got back I weighed in at 165.8.
I walked a lot more on the ship that I would do at home and I wrote down everything I ate, but since I had no way of weighing my food it was tough to stay the course.
I did eat of the SPA Menu, whenever we ate in the Dining Room. The weekend after we got back we had overnight compa... Tue, 28 Sep 2010 05:55:32 EST Had Dinner with Friends last night in Houston on our way to Galveston.
Hubby and I shared an entree, since we could not very well take leftovers. The Managers Special was an 8 oz NY Strip Steak, a grilled Quail and 1 Shrimp.
He had the Steak and Cole Slaw, I had the Dinner Salad and the Quail as well as the grilled Shrimp.
I can honestly say that this was the first and last time I eat Quail. But the grilled Shrimp was very good.
This morning it's Breakfast at IHOP.
Sat, 18 Sep 2010 06:53:43 EST the Bags are packed and ready to go into the trunk.
Tomorrow morning around 11 am we shall hit the road.
I am really looking forward to this vacation.
Today I had a "me" day. Hair Appointment, got Nails done. Hubby took me to Dinner and I had them bring a to go box right away, so I would not be tempted to eat the whole plate of food!! The Refrigerator is nearly empty. I have a cup of Milk left for tomorrow morning. Everything that could be used was used, some of it got frozen as a meal, so I don'... Fri, 17 Sep 2010 01:11:13 EST It's Vacation Time again In only 4 more days we will be off on another cruise. Our second one for this Year. This time we will be driving down to Houston on the day prior to the Cruise and having Dinner with some Friends Friday night and Breakfast with another group of Friends Saturday Morning. After that it's off to Galveston, where we will get on Board the Carnival Ecstasy for a 5 night Cruise of the Texaribbean.
My plan is to eat from the "healthy" menu at least every evening, if not for Lunch and Breakfast ... Mon, 13 Sep 2010 07:28:58 EST I have a bad Habit Since I am the only one eating healthy, whenever I prepare a Recipe it has far more servings than I need. So I put the rest into freezer bags or containers and put it in the freezer. Most of the time, without labeling what it is and when I packed it.

So this evening I was standing in front of the freezer, getting containers out and had no earthly Idea what was in there, so subsequently my calorie intake might be incorrect, cause I don't know what it was I ate.

I have to ... Thu, 26 Aug 2010 00:48:31 EST I think I blew it today We were gone most of the day, which included eating breakfast away from home as well as lunch.
For Breakfast we went to Huddle House and I had a waffle with 1 serving of whipped spread, 2 egg whites, scrambled, 2 cups of decaf, a glass of water (no ice).
And then I ate the 2 Sausage Patties that came with my husbands breakfast, but that he did not want. Strike one.
We then went to the Farmers Market in Grand Prairie, where they had the 1st Annual Hatch Chili Fest. The people fr... Sat, 21 Aug 2010 20:58:00 EST I made it! I am finally no longer "obese" but merely "overweight".
Went and had a manicure and pedicure yesterday to reward myself.
I also found a cute pair of thong type shoes to wear to my pedicture, so I don't have to use those things they put on your feet. (What are they called anyways?) Last time I did wear those and stepped outside the store, I burned my feet on the pavement.
Going to start on losing the next 10%. Tue, 17 Aug 2010 09:18:23 EST I'm back home I really enjoyed my vacation. It was great to see friends and relatives I had not seen for a year. And my weight gain was not as bad as I had feared.
I did exercise restraint while at the Family Reunion Picnic, but it is hard to do, when you are unable to weigh / measure your food. And I cannot force the people I am staying with to cook the way I would cook at home.
So all in all I am pretty satisfied. Thu, 29 Jul 2010 09:24:49 EST About to go on Vacation I went to see my friendly Plebotomist this morning and my Hemoglobin dropped from the last check and is now at 8.1. If it falls below 8 I need another Blood Transfusion. Right now it's wait and see. I go back for another check on August 16.
On Wednesday we are leaving for a one weeks vacation to go to a Family Reunion. I will not be able to track my food while there, so lets see if I can practice Portion Control while there and not eat everything in sight. I will weigh on Wednesday Morni... Mon, 19 Jul 2010 15:20:05 EST July 4, 2010 I survived this weekend without any major food faux pas'.
Tomorrow is weigh - in day and we shall see how I did over the whole week. Sun, 4 Jul 2010 22:44:18 EST Yesterday I did a stupid thing It is not Food related.
I am not that dumb, but I tripped over my own feet and fell flat on my front. Now I am hurting everywhere. 46
Knees, left elbow, ribs.
Finally resorted to taking 2 Tylenol last night so I could sleep.
Hopefully I will be able to move a bit easier in the coming days.
Mon, 28 Jun 2010 12:59:12 EST Doctor Visits Saw both my Hematologist and my GP today. They were both happy with my Lab Tests and I don't have to go back to see either until October. I still need to have Lab Work done every month to make sure my Blood does not break down. Mon, 21 Jun 2010 16:41:12 EST Back from Vacation We are back from Germany, and as I feared I gained some lbs and inches during 4 weeks of my mother's cooking. I just could not say no. However, my Hemoglobin was the highest it had been in a long time. Maybe the Trip did me good after all.

We had a great time, saw same parts for Germany that I had not visited before and took some great Pictures.

Took a detour on the way home from Bavaria to stop at Kloste... Sat, 19 Jun 2010 23:38:32 EST Vacation Suitcases are packed and weighed. I don't want to pay extra for too heavy luggage. Tomorrow morning we are leaving and I won't have regular Computer access until we get back from Germany in the middle of June.
I hope I do not blow my healthy eating habits completely. Weight as of this morning was 173. Let's see what the next month brings. Fri, 14 May 2010 22:47:24 EST it was more than just Rain My last Blog entry told you about the rain we had last Friday. But, it turned out to be just a bit more than rain. Our Relatives were staying at an RV Park in Gun Barrel City and they called me on Saturday morning and told me that they were afraid the night before, their 5th Wheel was being rocked so much by the fierce winds, that they thought it was going to tip over. Turned out that there was a Cat 1 Tornado in Mabank that night. L. told me that for 2 hours the winds were very forceful, Gus... Sat, 1 May 2010 08:54:43 EST It's raining My Husband's Brother and his wife are here to visit and we have bee doing quite a lot of sight seeing and being away from the house. But, with what I have learned here on SparkPeople I was able to exercise good judgement (I think) and use portion control when eating out so I lost some weight during this time.
On Wednesday we went to the East Texas Fisheries Center in Athens, yesterday we met up with our Children in Grand Prairie and went to eat Dinner together at the Hard Eight BBQ. Yumm... Fri, 23 Apr 2010 09:09:06 EST Last Weekend I had a wonderful weekend.
We took a Road Trip along part of Route 66.
Drove from Texas to Missouri via Tulsa, Oklahoma, where we stopped and bought some German Meats. Saw the Big Blue Whale,
Went on to Joplin to start our Route 66 trip.
Had a late Lunch at the Cafe on the Route, one of Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive in's and Dives Locales in Baxter Springs, Kansas.
Overnight in Tulsa. Breakfast at Tully's.
Visited the Golden Driller, took a Picture of Abe Lincolns ... Tue, 13 Apr 2010 00:16:41 EST Happy Easter! Yesterday our Grandkids were here and we were going to color Easter Eggs. But, Granny had made a boo boo and got stickers instead of Egg Color, and the Kids were both too young to understand how to apply them to the Eggs. Now I am sitting here with a Dozen of hard boiled Eggs. I guess it's going to be a deviled Egg Day today. And Hubby does like Egg Salad Sandwiches, so he is set for Lunch for a few days.

I broke out the Treadmill again this morning, watched an Episode of Grey's An... Sun, 4 Apr 2010 12:21:48 EST I did it!! I went out and bought a 25 ft. Ethernet Cable, so I could use my Net Book while walking on the Treadmill. I had not used it in a while (both the Net Book and the Treadmill) so the Net Book needed a lot of updating.

Well, normally I would sit on my butt and watch the updating going on. This time I started the Treadmill and began to walk, warming up, increasing speed slowly and would you believe? By the time my computer was at the latest and greatest, 40 minutes had passed, i had bur... Fri, 2 Apr 2010 12:54:41 EST Places I wish I were losing weight I noticed that the first place I can tell that I am losing weight is on my fingers. The ring fingers in particular. My rings are loose now and I am afraid I might lose them.
Why can't it be visible around my hips? Fri, 26 Mar 2010 22:57:24 EST New Glasses We both went to the Eye Doctor yesterday and got exams for new glasses. It had been 2 years since our eyes were examined. Of course, there were changes.
I will get my new Glasses in a week.
I moved the Laptop to the Treadmill. It fits on there, but of course I don't have a sufficiently long CAT 5 Cable to connect it. That will be my next project. Wed, 24 Mar 2010 01:37:12 EST I need some motivation! Since I am following the SparkPeople Food Guidelines I have been able to stop taking some of the Supplements I had been taking for some time. This is a great feeling.
I have no problems following the Menus and preparing the food like Spark Recipes suggests. They even taste good!! Who said eating healthy has to be bland.
Now all I need is a swift kick in the posterior to get off my derrière and start walking on the treadmill which is sitting right behind me as I am writing this blog.... Mon, 22 Mar 2010 23:18:31 EST Hubby does not like the food I serve him Well, I thought I could convince hubby to participate in my new Healthy Eating Plan, but he misses the meat. He told me outright this evening that he is not a vegetarian. He wants meat in his meals.
So I guess its back to cooking 2 meals. I was trying to avoid this. More work for me.

198 Thu, 18 Mar 2010 20:51:25 EST Back from the Doctor and I have great news:
1) no more getting up at 6:30 am to take Exjade. It worked and my Ferritin Levels are down to 581.4 from over 900.
2) Hemoglobin at 8.6. Lab Visits only every month instead of every 2 weeks.
3) since everything is stable won't have to see the Doc until June 21.

Stopped for Breakfast on the way home. I need to pay attention to my food for the rest of the day and don't overdo it. Mon, 15 Mar 2010 12:24:09 EST Sunday Well it is Sunday, exactly a week since our fabulous Cruise to the Caribbean ended.
The weight I had put on during the cruise is gone.
Logging all the food really helps me to stay motivated, and seeing the numbers on the scale get smaller is wonderful too.
I printed out the Shopping List for next weeks Food Plan and went Grocery Shopping yesterday. Did I ever mention that I dislike Grocery Shopping? Was not able to find everything listed, but I picked up some substitutions. <B... Sun, 14 Mar 2010 19:34:32 EST Back home Well our Cruise was wonderful. 30
Unfortunately I caught a cold / sinus infection and had to go see the Doctor right after we got back. 39
And, I gained 4 lbs. It did not help that I was unable to log my intake on Spark People. So I am back to square one. 29
Weighing in daily
Tracking food daily
drinking 8 glasses of water daily
walking on the treadmill daily Wed, 10 Mar 2010 09:44:46 EST Ah Vacation!!! Today was getting ready for the cruise day.
Hair Appointment, got Nails done.
Had Lunch at Chili's (Guiltless grilled Salmon with seasonal Vegetables) - yummy!!
Pretty much stayed within my goals, except for the Sodium.

We are leaving very early tomorrow morning and I will be gone for at least 8 days.

I will try very hard to be a good girl while on the Cruise and not eat everything I see. Sat, 27 Feb 2010 23:08:59 EST dusted off the Treadmill and walked for 15 minutes. That's all I could handle. I only managed to walk half a mile, but it's a start. Fri, 26 Feb 2010 12:52:04 EST a nearly perfect day Today was a great day. With the help of the SP Nutrition Tracker I was able to not go over any of my Goals. Calories, Fat, Carbohydrates, Protein, Calcium, Sodium, Magnesium, Folate and Cholesterol were all in the green area.
The only sore spot was the Potassium, where I am way under. I guess I have to have more Milk.
I think SparkPeople are going to be good for me.
250 345 Thu, 25 Feb 2010 23:24:42 EST
