GOLDENGLORY's SparkPeople Blog GOLDENGLORY's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Feeling a little spark today I never realized how much stress I am under at any given time. Sometimes it feels like the weight of the world is on me. It's just something I live with being a single parent with special needs in the home. It can be difficult sometimes and a real challenge.
So, this year there have been a lot of changes. Just the anticipation of many of these changes has been a cause of stress that I didn't even realize I was feeling.
So, my oldest turned 18 this year. This meant no regular homesc... Tue, 23 Oct 2012 14:49:48 EST Keepin' on keepin' on I am working hard on not getting discouraged. It can be annoying to spend so many years working towards a goal and still not get any where near it. Even worse is to have spent so many years doing what you were told would do the job only to end up in worse shape as time went by. Several times I did give up. The only time I got close to being a "normal" weight and size was in my early 20s. Unfortunately it was the result of almost constant starvation, bulimia, and daily workouts at a gym for at... Wed, 19 Sep 2012 16:35:20 EST Moving around more I have been working harder on staying off my butt so much. I have tried, off and on, to follow FlyLady for a number of years without much success. Lately though, I got the kitchen cleaned and have been keeping it clean. Sometimes it can be hard because "stinkin' thinkin'" can sneak in there about how unfair it is that my kids don't try to keep things cleaner. In the long run though, I am the one who suffers the most if I don't keep things going. Everything piles up and then I get more overwhe... Mon, 17 Sep 2012 17:33:54 EST Quiet lately I know I have been quiet and most of it has been out of frustration. The scale moved back up after the fat fast to what it was before, bouncing back and forth roughly 5lbs, between 313 and 308.
I have kept my carbs and my calories well within limits. Except for mowing grass the other day, I have not done much in the way of regular exercise... unless sweeping, mopping, cleaning the toilets/bathrooms and laundry count. My joints have been hurting which makes it harder to get myself moving... Sat, 8 Sep 2012 19:58:23 EST Laughing is good for you!- Funny Story link I absolutely had to share this link on here today! I kid you not when I say I laughed so hard I hurt from reading this. The whole, tears pouring down my face, not being able to breath, falling down from laughing so hard kind of funny article! To give an idea of what the article is about... the title of the story is The Fart That (Almost) Altered My Destiny. The woman who wrote the story had been staying away from carbs to lose a little weight but this particular night, on her third date, she ... Tue, 28 Aug 2012 11:56:07 EST A good week so far Thank you to everyone for giving me a little sympathy for the way last week went. It was definitely a rough week.

I have my mower fixed. I found out the man who lived at the end of my road (with a pink pig statue next to one of his driveways) does small motor repair. Much as it pained me to have to get help, I was glad to get my mower fixed. Since I had the part already off, it didn't take any time at all for him to wind the spring up and to get it back in place. He had stronger h... Wed, 22 Aug 2012 18:29:40 EST Sorry for not being around this week It has been one of those weeks. I was finally able to mow my grass Monday but, before I could get all of the part I needed to get done the most... my pull cord broke. The mower won't run without a pull cord. So, the next day I was able to buy a new pull cord and thought I would be able to fix the mower easy enough. I found the how to online and it didn't look hard. Unfortunately, in order to remove the old cord, I had to remove the part to which it was attached. The recoil spring popped out. ... Sat, 18 Aug 2012 16:30:36 EST Natural Trans Fats vs Artificial Trans Fats While adding frozen all beef hamburger patties to my food list on here, I was surprised and dismayed to read that each burger had about 1.5g trans fat per burger. Considering how many times we have been told ALL trans fats are bad for us, I was kind of upset about discovering this. So, I started looking around to see if I could find any information about the differences between the artificially produced trans fats such as "hard" margarine and vegetable shortening and the naturally occurring t... Tue, 7 Aug 2012 20:12:09 EST Low Carb and digestive problems Since I have had some very uncomfortable digestive problems due to the fat fast and back into starting the Atkins Induction, I decided to see what I could find online about the situation and to see if others have had the same type of problem.
While a number of people end up with constipation in the beginning, there are also some who develop the opposite problem of diarrhea. 39 This time I have had the second problem. There are a number of reasons for it happening including the... Tue, 7 Aug 2012 13:23:26 EST Off to a good start As expected, some of the 9lbs I lost through the fat fast came back once I started eating food again. I went from 304 back up to 306, which isn't bad. That still means 7lbs down since Friday. It might still fluctuate some in the next day or so as my body adjusts to more real food again.
I got up early so I could mow part of my yard before the heat kicked in. Unfortunately, the humidity was at 95% this morning and no breeze. Still, I was able to get an hour in on the yard. The wet grass ... Mon, 6 Aug 2012 13:50:42 EST Went off the Fat Fast The good news is it was a great start to get me on my way again. I went from 313lbs Friday morning to 304 when I got up this morning. The digestive problems I have been having because of my lack of a gall bladder persuaded me to go ahead and start Atkins induction. I am guessing I will probably go back up a few pounds just because my digestion will go back to normal.
I really appreciate the suggestions made regarding taking digestive enzymes and using magnesium oil on sore muscles. I wil... Sun, 5 Aug 2012 18:36:54 EST Took a break but now I'm back I had a number of things going on in the past few months and everything was starting to get to me. I ended up taking a break from SP even though it wasn't intentional. The frustration of gaining weight no matter what I was doing or eating was depressing me. The stress of dealing with my son becoming a legal adult and having to start the process of applying for adult disability for him hasn't been a lot of fun. We are getting SSI for him at the moment and he is still on medicaid, which is good... Sat, 4 Aug 2012 15:28:19 EST Food Police Reading one of my friends blogs, I knew exactly what I wanted to talk about today.

Food police.

Most of us have had to deal with them at one point or another, especially those of us who have had weight issues for a while and/or are more than a little overweight. I haven't had anyone around to do that to me for a while. But growing up with a weight problem most of my life, you bet I have.

Some food police are well intentioned and try to actually help you. Th... Mon, 25 Jun 2012 17:15:38 EST Checking out some different sites Not long ago, I found a site called TribeSports:
. It's fun because there are all of these groups, called tribes. Yes, I know Sparkpeople has groups and they are set up for pretty much any interest you might have. I also know there are lots of challenge groups. Still, this is another site to give you more options. There are plenty of challenges on this site for just about any kind of health or fitness challenge you could want.

I guess the main... Sun, 24 Jun 2012 18:35:30 EST Feeling much better now First, I want to thank LEIAMLOW and LINDAMARIEZ1 especially for taking time to encourage me regularly this past month or so. It has been very difficult feeling so bad to do much of anything since getting sick/hurting so bad when I mowed grass about a month and a half ago. I had never had muscle cramps like that... and truly hope I never go through it again. Since then, I have made sure to have stuff around to help counteract the electrolyte loss from sweating. I've mowed grass twice since the... Sat, 23 Jun 2012 16:54:26 EST Going back to very low carb for the time being Nothing has been working lately for me. I tried adding carbs for a while to see if it would help with my fluctuating weight and it helped... move the scales in the wrong direction. I was starting to have more headaches again, started feeling tired all of the time, just have been feeling bad.
Yesterday I went back to around induction levels of carbs. Not quite as strict as induction since I did have some 2% Fage greek yogurt, plain, with a big handful of blueberries and a little stevia. ... Tue, 19 Jun 2012 16:22:09 EST Allergic reaction to something I ate Not real sure what is going on with my body right now. Something I ate the other day set off an allergic reaction with big welts on my lower jaw, neck, chest, shoulders and back. I am thinking it was the rotisserie chicken I had. I never have had a problem with them at the store I bought it from but I have had a reaction similar to that from eating them from a different store before. I don't have the ingredient list from the packaging but I think maybe it was caused by MSG. I know sometimes t... Thu, 14 Jun 2012 16:31:24 EST A good link to explain why the scales lie

hy-scales-lie.html

Definitely has some good reasons for our not losing scale weight at times. Thu, 31 May 2012 21:17:13 EST Loving my Wii and You Tube Today I reminded myself of another one of the reasons I love having my Wii. Not only can I use my Wii Fit to workout with... and my Jillian Michaels 2009 fitness program (haven't used that one much yet). But, I had forgotten it has an internet channel that allows access to You Tube.
I have been wanting to try some of the thousands of workouts available on You Tube made by Spark People and other sites and posted on there. Basically, I could work out every day for the rest of my life and ... Wed, 30 May 2012 15:10:42 EST The best reason for using a food scale Many people take time to read labels, making sure the food they are getting is nutritious, low in fat, and/or calories and/or carbs and/or has what they are looking for or doesn't. It's a shame many do not also go that one step further by weighing the portions. Of course there are times when a food scale or measuring cup is not available but, by weighing the portions, you see actual amounts and can eventually have a better idea of how much a portion is by the feel and size.

There ... Sat, 26 May 2012 16:06:04 EST Cold showers I never would have thought I would ever enjoy a cold shower or get used to it. But, several weeks ago I decided to try them for several reasons. I have seen on a number of sites the benefits of cold showers/cold therapy. Here are just a few links touting the wondrous things cold showers can do for you:

www.secrets-of-longevity-in-humans.c
om/cold-showers.html

le/health-f... Fri, 25 May 2012 17:26:04 EST Inner thigh cramps? Seriously? I mowed grass yesterday. I took breaks, drank plenty of water and didn't even feel as tired as usual when I got finished. I took a nice cold shower to get cleaned up and felt pretty good but tired in the evening. I dozed off reading on my bed and had my legs bent some while sleeping.

About an hour later, I stretched my legs and felt something I had never felt before. One of my thigh muscles, just above the knee, to the inside of my leg cramped up like a charley horse. When I tried... Wed, 23 May 2012 15:11:07 EST With millions of people in the world, why do I let one or two ruin my good day? My next door neighbors and I had a falling out about a year ago. Since then, I've avoided them... which is usually easy since we both live in single family houses. I think, to some extent, we both used each other. They remember only whatever negative things I did and only the positive things they did. They are good at rewriting history to fit their agenda. I admit I didn't always thank them when they mowed my grass. Most of the time when they did it, our landlord paid them to do so or they we... Tue, 22 May 2012 18:01:58 EST Slow and steady Sometimes I really want the changes on the outside to match the changes on my inside. It can be very...frustrating... to not have a more obvious manifestation of the work I am doing. But, I know it will come with time.
I would really like my scales especially to show the difference but it stubbornly remains in the same spot. I am considering changing my ticker to show workout minutes or calories burned or something other than weight just because that would at least show the effort I put... Sun, 20 May 2012 16:48:39 EST There are a few changes after all I just posted an updated picture of myself wearing the same clothes as the ones from my first before picture. Although there is not big changes or even very obvious ones, I could see the differences. My stomach is smaller which makes the pants sit higher on my waist. My backside is rounding some, instead of being so saggy. While its frustrating how there hasn't been much change in the past year, actually there have been more than what is showing.
Besides being a year older, my weight fl... Thu, 17 May 2012 21:39:38 EST mmmm... Strawberries! I bought a container of strawberries from Aldis yesterday with huge strawberries and had to share a picture of a couple of them because they are so big!
Sat, 12 May 2012 16:16:08 EST Newest Member of our Family! My brother, Jeff, and his beautiful wife, Amy, welcomed their baby boy into the family today. Colton weighs 9lb 5oz and is 21" long! Mother and baby are both doing well and Colton's big sisters are very excited he is finally here! He is so beautiful!
Fri, 11 May 2012 23:58:29 EST Slowly changing shape My weight is not moving off very quickly but I realize some of it is from building muscle while losing fat.

I'm starting to sort of like working out every day now. It feels good to get that little bit of a burn or ache when I'm pushing myself. I like sweating, at least some. It helps me to keep going knowing I am doing something good for myself, even if there are no obvious results yet. I have started being able to see some of my muscles better, even under all of the padding. I li... Tue, 8 May 2012 16:29:30 EST New kettlebell Yesterday I bought my new kettlebell. I went up to the 10lb from the 5lb. I needed something with more of a challenge, which I definitely got! I am still tight and and a bit sore today. I'm happy though because it means I got a good workout yesterday with the new weight.
I'm able to see and flex muscles I don't remember seeing or flexing before. I know it's silly but its sort of fun flexing my pecs and, well, seeing my breasts actually move. lol I got a good triceps workout yesterday be... Sun, 6 May 2012 20:47:01 EST Never Give Up! Tonight I saw a wonderful video on youtube:

I found out about this video from one of the kettlebell blogs I follow, this one is by Tracy Reifkind. Both she, and the man in the video named Arthur, are inspirational and both of them have lost over 100lbs each.

What I learned from this video was to not give up on yourself, even when other people might. Many times we let others shape our reality. We let fear keep us from trying. Fear o... Fri, 4 May 2012 22:53:13 EST Hot The kettlebell workout almost got me today. I don't know if its because its hot or because I'm pushing myself a bit harder for the bootcamp but I thought I was gonna throw up during the workout today. I didn't but it was touch and go for a minute there.

I am not eating any solid food before the workout. I do make myself a protein shake and drinking it first. From what I have been reading, bodybuilders do their cardio workout either without eating anything or with a protein meal be... Wed, 2 May 2012 14:18:47 EST Frustrated This isn't exactly a rant but I am kind of frustrated right now.

I did extremely well for a while on a low carb plan but after about 6 months I had stalled out. Nothing I did changed it. Then, about a year after that, back in September of last year, my weight started going up again for no reason. I didn't get back up to my highest weight of 350 +/- but I did end up finally stopping at 310lbs about a month or so ago.

I read in a few places that people with thyroid condi... Mon, 30 Apr 2012 14:20:47 EST OOOOOoooo... muscles Ok, this cracked me up today so I had to share it.

I have been doing my kettlebell workout almost every other day for about 2 weeks now. I am loving it! I am getting close to needing a higher weight kettlebell. The one I have is the 5lb put out by Danskin. While it is still kicking my lower body's butt, literally, because of my body weight, my upper body is starting to need a little more weight to keep it going.

I was flexing my muscles some today in front of my daughter... Sat, 28 Apr 2012 19:19:25 EST Got my workout goal covered for the week Much as I do not like mowing grass, I have to admit, it is a killer workout. It would be so much better if my yard wasn't hilly and full of mole, gopher, whatever holes. lol Got it done today in 2 hours, 25 minutes, which I think is the fastest I've ever finished it. That isn't counting the breaks I took. I really don't mind it so much except for being as heavy and big as I am, it can hurt moving on the hills because my feet are at angles and I am pushing something at the same time. One of my... Mon, 23 Apr 2012 17:01:31 EST Refocusing While I try to figure out the best way to eat for me, I plan to stay active. I received a belly dancing dvd and scarf that I had on my list of wants for my birthday. I love to hear the scarf jingle when I move from the coins hitting each other. Amazon had a scarf that could go around my hips (barely). The dvd is called Belly Dance For Beginners with Leila as the instructor. The different sessions range from 10 to 30 minutes. I took belly dancing classes back when I was in my early 20's and lo... Wed, 18 Apr 2012 16:43:35 EST Homemade yogurt... mmmmm I have found that I really, really like greek style yogurt. I buy the plain kind and you can add it to so many things. it makes a good substitute for sour cream. Its so nice and thick and creamy. I love it with a little fruit mixed in and some stevia, if any sweetness is needed. I'm not so crazy about the price though.

I had been planning on making my own yogurt for a while now, especially since I found several sites that tell you how to do it, step by step. For me, the easiest is... Thu, 12 Apr 2012 15:15:36 EST Kettlebell training All I can say is, "Wow!" For the amount of time spent working out, you definitely feel it from the very beginning. Especially if you haven't been steady at working out and haven't done much weight training. I have the Danskin 5lb kettlebell, the lightest they have. It came with a dvd that discusses safety, has a warmup section, 3 different workouts that can be mixed up or done individually and a cooldown/stretch after. The first workout is about 10 minutes long. The second one is 15 minutes a... Tue, 10 Apr 2012 19:10:04 EST Resetting Everything I posted Friday but I guess it was eaten. Basically, what I wrote about was this past week was not a good week.

I wasn't bothered by turning 30 or 40 but I am bothered about turning 50. I realize a lot of it has to do with there being a lot of changes coming up this year.

The big one, besides me turning half a century old, is my son, my oldest, turns 18 this month. This is a big deal in many ways. He is autistic/asperger's syndrome. Since my husband died from cancer, w... Mon, 9 Apr 2012 13:04:56 EST Bummed I've been having some mild depression issues lately. I thought at first maybe it was just from this time of year and the prospect of turning 50 in less than 2 weeks now. I am beginning to think it maybe one more sign of my thyroid being out of whack. My weight has been going up instead of down again and that may or may not be because of my thyroid. I went to the dr today and he ordered a TSH blood test. I would prefer the more extensive blood test that includes Free T3 and Free T4 but I think... Wed, 4 Apr 2012 14:50:10 EST Getting my head back in the game I finally got a pretty decent sleep last night. I do not do well when I don't get enough sleep. I know others can function well on only a few hours sleep and/or with broken sleep but I don't. I won't go on too much about it but lack of sleep causes me to be more tired, of course. When I am tired, I tend to make poor food choices and not take the time to cook like I should. It also tend to keep me from being as active as I need to be.

I feel pretty rested today. I did have to get u... Mon, 2 Apr 2012 11:11:21 EST Back on plan today but still sore and tired Trying not to be a whiner or make excuses but going about 40hrs with only a 1 hr nap is hard on this older body. I used to be able to do stuff like that all of the time in my 20s and still keep going. I did finally get some sleep last night/this morning but I am paying for it.

My son is doing well from the surgery. His face is a bit swollen but there isn't much drainage and he is eating soft foods just fine. I set my cell phone alarms so it would go off every 4 hours for the first... Sat, 31 Mar 2012 14:01:37 EST Too Tired to think much today I am one of those people who tend to not go to bed until around 3 am. I don't have to be up at a certain time, so its not really a big deal. I have been trying to work on getting on a little more "normal" schedule since its difficult to interact with the rest of the world when you stay up half the night and get up late in the day.
Anyway, I did not go to bed last night. I had to drive for over an hour to Egleston Children's Hospital this morning and be that at 6am so my 17yr old son cou... Fri, 30 Mar 2012 16:03:10 EST Sore but happy I'm starting to notice a difference when I work out now. I tend to still get sore and stiff when I wake up the next day but I do seem to have a bit more energy after working out. I am still not consistent enough at working out daily but, one day at a time to bring about the changes I want. I am making it much more of a priority now.

I read a quote today that I really like. It said, "Your future is created by what you do today, not tomorrow." ~ Robert T. Kiyosaki Makes sense, no m... Tue, 27 Mar 2012 14:44:56 EST Not enough carbs... I am so used to eating very low carb over the past few years that I am struggling with finding the balance. Because I have hypothyroidism, I take Levothyroxin, or synthetic T3. I did very well eating extremely low carb for about 6 months or so. Then the weight loss stopped for about a year. Last September, I started gaining weight and ended up regaining 30lbs of the 70lb I had lost over the couple of years before. I was beating myself up over it for a while and couldn't figure out what I was ... Sat, 24 Mar 2012 17:05:03 EST Strike Three and Four and Five all at one time As I have said in one of my earlier blogs, I decided it was time to get out there in the world of dating again. I have one man I have been talking with almost daily through texts and phone calls. We are supposed to meet at the end of the month. He lives about an hour away and works two jobs, so gonna squeeze it in when we get a chance. He has made me realize how inadequate my cell phone is since it sucks texting with a regular phone keyboard instead of a qwerty.
Since he was honest with ... Fri, 23 Mar 2012 13:07:34 EST Oww! I went to the LifeSouth blood bank yesterday to donate some blood since I haven't done it in a while. I don't know if I didn't hydrate myself enough over the past few days or if it was just the person who stuck me but it did not go well. She didn't get the vein right to begin with. She kept wiggling the needle and moving it trying to catch the vein better. I have smallish veins but I could see them better than I have in a long time. Apparently they weren't good enough for her to get it just r... Thu, 22 Mar 2012 16:28:38 EST Better day by day I am slowly doing better about working out. I still am not doing it daily but I have done more this week. I started using the Wii Fit again. Right now I am not doing so well on the body tests... mostly because my kids talk to me while I am trying to do it. I get an attack of the giggles which keeps me from being able to actually do some of the stuff.
I am still reading a lot of information about the effects of a low carb diet and the thyroid. There really doesn't seem to be a lot of inf... Sat, 17 Mar 2012 19:32:26 EST Boldly going where I haven't gone before! While I am working on changing my mindset, my eating plans and my body, I am also trying a few new things in my every day life. One is my daughter and I are trying our hand at our own artwork. I am still trying to figure out what I want to paint... thinking a nature scene but there are so many ideas in my head its hard to decide. She has all of the paints right now so I am letting her do her thing first. It is part of redecorating her room and I thought it would be more fun to have something ... Thu, 15 Mar 2012 20:33:32 EST Beautiful Day! Wow! Not even April yet and it is 78 degrees at 6pm.
I got a few things accomplished today. I ended up digging 2 different holes in my yard trying to find a good spot for my forsythia bush I bought the other day. I couldn't dig the first hole deep enough because my yard is a bit rocky and there is huge rocks on that side of the yard. So, I dug another hole near my bedroom window so I will be able to see the flowers next year when it hopefully blooms. I had to dig through heavy clay and ... Wed, 14 Mar 2012 18:31:56 EST Working on my mind set This time around, I am working on not only my body but also my mind. I know there are things in there that hold me back. I know there are things in there that want me to stay the way I am. I know there are fears mostly of the unknown keeping me from progressing and moving forward. Even if we don't want to be overweight, there are many factors that keep us there. Our own bodies fight to keep the weight on once it's been gained. It can be an ongoing battle on many levels, even once the weight i... Tue, 13 Mar 2012 15:13:46 EST
