Fortunately, I haven't let these things derail me (too much).

I ran the Portland Half-Marathon on October 7th. Definitely am proud of myself for taking on the challenge. Still eating paleo and doing CrossFit and couldn't be happier. I havent felt this good in a long while. I'm not really tracking food anymore - I eat when I am hungry and can have a a variety of things. Foods I've given up as part of Paleo: breads, grains, legumes, pasta, white potatoes, peanuts, and refined sugar. I eat all of the veggies, meats, healthy fats (there is such a thing) that I want. I have 1-2 servings of fruit a day. I used to think straw... I'm still doing really well with the Paleo eating. I'm finding that the cravings for grains, breads, etc are just about gone. I did have a couple of cookies one day this week, and let me just tell you, totally not worth it. I literally felt like I had a hangover afterward. From here on forward, cookies out - fruit is in.

I also started my CrossFit jump start classes on Monday of this week. The classes are designed to work on for... Sun, 26 Aug 2012 12:47:31 EST Weekly Recap and Paleo Update http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5020947 This week wasn't as focused as I'd wanted. I had to travel up to Seattle for a few days for work, which threw a wrench into my normal routine. Fortunately, I managed to eat fairly well during the week with a "treat" meal early in the week. I didn't get as much exercise as last week. That will all change this upcoming week with the beginning of Crossfit classes.

Paleo eating is going well. Sat, 18 Aug 2012 18:31:41 EST Weekly recap and results!! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5010844 I had a great week this week. Work was very stressful, but I managed to eat healthy 95% of the week, cook most of my meals at home, and get some good exercise in. Overall, I'm proud of the way I handled myself this week and stayed on track.

I'm currently training for the Portland half-marathon. I've decided my goal is to just finish. I'm going to try and train as if I'm going to run the entire thing, but in reality, I know it will be a run some/walk a lot endeavor. I got some good ... I'm on day 4 of eating Paleo and loving it. This morning's breakfast was scrambled eggs and pork chops with a cherry and pear balsamic reduction. This evening, I'm going to plan my menu for the week and go grocery shopping.

Yesterday I walk/ran 3 miles on the riverfront in the morning. It was super hot, but I felt amazing afterward. Sun, 5 Aug 2012 18:29:13 EST A return to me... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4998249 So I've been away from SparkPeople for about 3 months now. Life, vacation, summer... they all got in the way of the momentum I had going. In this three months, I've ate lots of bad food, drank lots of cocktails, and somehow only managed to gain around 8 lbs back. It's time for me to get back on track, get motivated, and continue on my journey.

I also have a large goal coming up on October 7th, I will be running the Portland Half-Marathon. I started my training plan this week, but I... Thu, 2 Aug 2012 15:54:57 EST A good week... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4868294 I had a relatively good week. My food consumption was right where it needs to be save a couple of splurges (that's what life is about though, right?). On the days I had a little splurge, I compensated with the exercise to bring everything into balance.

The weather here in Portland is finally starting to change. We're supposed to have our first longer stretch of rain-free days this week. I'm hoping to take advantage of the improved weather and return to working on my running speed a... Sun, 29 Apr 2012 00:38:52 EST April Goals http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4815282 I definitely want to continue my recent success and move forward into April with momentum. Sun, 1 Apr 2012 16:38:00 EST Back in the groove... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4808624 So after my confessions, I'm back in the groove of living a healthier me. I've returned to cleaner eating habits, getting some exercise in each week, and most importantly for me, not letting work and life stresses derail me.

I ran the Portland Shamrock Run 5k on March 18th - or should I say - I ran part of the run. Wed, 28 Mar 2012 09:13:53 EST Confessions... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4776481 I've figured out that I have to either be all or nothing in this journey. Letting some things slide - convincing myself I'll do better tomorrow - self sabotaging - it all has to stop here and now.

Monday was a dark day for me. It kind of snuck up on me. Leading up to it, I had been somewhat OK with my eating habits for the past week or so. There were occasional splurges, but nothing out of control. It seriously is like running on clouds. If you have never been fitted for running shoes, I'd highly recommend it. They have you jog on the treadmill while a camera watches your steps. I learned that I tend to pronate (the inside of my foot hits first) so I need a sturdier running shoe. I also learned that I've been buying my shoes a 1/2 size too small! Who would have known! After trying on three different pairs recommended based on my step, I fe... Sun, 26 Feb 2012 21:51:01 EST Oatmeal fiasco... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4746106 Word to the wise - don't try and cook when you first wake up. Take a little time, drink some coffee or green tea, let your body and mind wake to the day, then cook. This morning, I decided to try my hand at making steel cut oatmeal for the first time. Until now, I've always used instant oatmeal, but friends rave about the creaminess and heartiness of steel cut. Since cooking this kind of oatmeal is an investment in time, I decided to batch some for the entire week.

Instructions: 4 ... I have been floating between 228 and 232 lbs. This yo-yo plateau has frustrated me beyond belief. Finally, I decided to accept it and just continue what I am doing knowing that the results would come eventually.

I wasn't anticipating a loss when I stepped on the scale this morning. Sat, 18 Feb 2012 13:22:13 EST Music is my motivation - This month's key players http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4737856 Music is my motivation. A song can come on during my workout and spark me to an amazing finish when all I want to do is give up. I'm a firm believer that music is a very personal experience to an individual. The lyrics can conjure up a memory. The beat can drive emotion. The melody can take you to a place where the sweat and fatigue don't matter (or motivate beyond belief). I thought I'd share some of the key songs on my playlist that are getting the job done this month. Not for everyone - bu... Tue, 14 Feb 2012 02:25:59 EST Keep on Movin' Don't Stop... No. http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4736110 That's my mantra. Even though I'm not seeing results on the scale, I'm not feeling defeated. I feel fantastic. I can do 60 minutes of cardio without feeling winded. I'm going to keep on movin', knowing that the results will surely come with time and continued dedication. It seems my stay in the 220s may be longer than I wanted, but I'll continue to exercise and be disciplined. The results will come.

I crossed 250 fitness minutes on the month today. I was very focused on both what I was putting in my mouth, as well as the level of exercise I was getting. Allowed myself to have a "cheat" evening last night with friends and cocktails (drinks pack a LOT of calories!). I actually ended the day just slightly above my recommended calorie range though, so it was definitely a win.

Without further delay... Sat, 21 Jan 2012 12:36:33 EST Upping the exercise = upping the caloric intake http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4685967 So I'm taking heed to the "you have to eat in order to lose weight" advice that I see all over Spark by ensuring I get my recommended caloric intake for my activity level. Currently I'm burning around 4,000 calories a week above and beyond my BMR of 2,300 calories a day. Fortunately Spark does the math for me and recommends, for a 1.5 lb a week loss, that I need to eat between 2,100 and 2,500 calories a day. It seems like a lot. I feel like I'm eating all the time. Before, I was consuming und... Tue, 17 Jan 2012 04:06:16 EST Weekly weigh-in http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4680035 So I have decided to start my weekly weigh ins again as one way to track progress and hold myself accountable. I was nervous about this morning's weigh in, as I didn't get any cardio in yesterday due to having to drive up to Seattle for work. Then I remembered that I have over 180 minutes of cardio logged on the week and watched my eating, so I felt better about getting on the scale.

Starting weight: 257 (2/28/2011)
Last weigh in: 229.8 (1/7/2011)
This week's weigh in: 2... I was so exhausted Tuesday night that I didn't get my 30 minutes of cardio and weight training in. Boo! So this morning, I was up and at 'em at 5:30 am in order to meet some tight deadlines at work. I came home during my lunch break and got 30 minutes in on the elliptical. Tue, 10 Jan 2012 21:40:12 EST Plateau Buster Challenge to Myself http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4670444 I've been hovering in the 229 - 232 pound range since Christmas. I had success with this strategy before, showing a 1.0 - 2.0 lb loss a week on average. I read a blog this past week that really inspired me (http://www.bendoeslife.com). This guy went from 360lbs to running marathons and becoming an Ironman twice! The inspiring part of his story is that he started small. He began running and walking as much as he could in his health. Pounds lost and improving health motivated him to keep at it. Did he have setbacks? Of course. The key here ... Fri, 2 Sep 2011 02:22:21 EST September Goals... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4454753 I'm being proactive and prepping myself for the month of September. Below are my goals and rewards if I make it.

- September weight loss goal: 6lbs (1.5lbs per week = 234lbs by September 30)
- Log 500 fitness minutes in the month of September (I really want that 500 fitness minutes trophy)
- Weight train 3 times a week

That's it. Mon, 29 Aug 2011 14:08:50 EST This week's results are in... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4453029 So I have decided to change my weigh-in date from Wednesdays to Sundays. I think this will help hold me accountable on Fridays and Saturdays, which have been my most challenging days in terms of getting my exercise in and eating right. I'm not having huge problems staying on plan, but the potential is there. Knowing I have to weigh in on Sunday morning will hold me accountable and surely be a motivator.

As part of this new strategy, I'm happy to report that I weighed in this morni... Sun, 28 Aug 2011 16:02:18 EST Weekly weigh-in.... Goal met!!! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4445754 Today was my weekly weigh-in. Last week I weighed 244.7lbs. My goal for this week was to lose 1.5lbs which would put me at 243.2. I totally nailed it on the head - the scale this forming fluttered back 243.2. Ensuring I hit the gym for at least 30 minutes the last three days contributed to this success, along with watching my calorie intake. As I said in my previous blog, I'm going to strive to have a 30 minute-a-day workout streak for the next 7 days.

Beyond thrilled with my resu... Wed, 24 Aug 2011 11:34:33 EST What have you done today to make you feel proud? http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4445185 So excuse my foul mouth, but today was a ___________ day. I will let you fill in the blank. I was at the office from 7:30am - 10:30pm working on a deadline. Did I mention I had to fire one of my staff members today? Granted she had every opportunity and more lives than a cat, but in this economy it is still unnerving having to terminate someone. I sincerely hope she uses this as a catalyst to find something she enjoys and motivation to grow professionally.

So after all of those ___... Wed, 24 Aug 2011 02:57:14 EST Saturday update... http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4438824 I do my weigh-ins on Wednesdays, so I am going to strive to do a "mid-weight-week" check-in blog each Saturday. I think this will help hold me accountable so I won't think I can slide by a few days and get sidetracked from my plan on the weekends. Case in point - the last 3 days I have not been a very good Sparker. While I've kept my calorie intake under control, I definitely have not been making the best food choices and have not been eating a consistent 3 meals like I should. I really need ...
