GINA180847's SparkPeople Blog GINA180847's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Doing A Happy Dance So after wondering how my morning walk got posted on my pg. without the actual physical presence of my tracker( It had gone missing) I went on with my life. I thought maybe one of the dogs had swallowed it (the big guy will eat just about anything) and that would be the end of that. No more phantom readings. DH's leg was swollen and then it turned kind of purple. Off we go to our local clinic and the nurse says it looks like a DVT, deep vein thrombosis and so off to the emergency room at the ... Tue, 3 Mar 2015 12:53:47 EST Phantom Spark Tracker! This morning I got up, said my Long Obligatory Prayer (love that prayer) and got ready to take the dogs out on their first daily walk. We don't have a fence around our yard so I got into the habit of taking them twice a day for at least 45 mins and often over an hour. This village has great areas to walk and I have lots recorded on my mp3 player to listen to. So the walk is a given and I have a Spark activity tracker that I love to have record my every step. Are you with me so far? This is wh... Mon, 2 Mar 2015 15:08:59 EST Super Dawg SUPER DAWG
I am Super Dawg, neither young or old
My job is to protect and serve
A lot of protect and not too much serve
I live with two humans, very different from each other
They like each other a lot
Because they are elderly and vulnerable I will protect them from many
things in this world that threaten their lives.

The older of the two is Him
He is a little grouchy and
gets on her nerves when he blows
He takes me on many walks <B... Wed, 17 Sep 2014 18:45:56 EST FRIENDS! I have been musing all morning on the friends I have made in my life. A lot of them have faded away as our interests diverged and that is okay. Sometimes you just run out of things to talk about. But some of them have stayed in my life despite distance, unshared interests and just plain busyness with the life we have.

One dear person I will never forget is a lady who was a former employer. Her daughter was someone I took care of as a care aide for many years. She started out a chil... Tue, 9 Sep 2014 16:33:05 EST Potpourri I call this blog potpourri because there is lots to say none of it really huge.
It is the first of Sept. and I am looking at what I need to get done this month. I need to be calm and not feel overwhelmed. Lots to do and very little is optional. I'll mention some of them and if you get bored just feel free to not bother with my ramblings.
No. 1. There needs to be a new front door bought and put in. The wind damaged the frame, outside door and the inside door should be replaced at th... Mon, 1 Sep 2014 15:21:29 EST A Grizzly and My Two Dogs! I don't usually post this often but my life has been exciting and not in a good way.
Because I had a lot to do today I thought I would take the dogs out and walk them early and get that out of the way. They nag if the day progresses and they have to stay at home. So I took them out to a remote area where the only traffic I ever see is a lonely Fisheries officer in his truck. I walked along and the dogs stayed with me till I came to an area which is a deep dip (gully) with steep hills on ... Mon, 5 May 2014 16:27:09 EST Fabulous Northern Lights Dancing! Early this morning Annie and I and the two dogs set out to drive to the city 4 hrs. away to visit with my husband Charlie who is in the hospital after having knee replacement surgery and then a stroke. The surgery was April 7th and he is still very ill. He's been moved from the surgical ward to Rehab to continue to recover and finally after talking about the amount of pain he is in and them not understanding this at all they decided to do an ultrasound of his leg and he has a huge blood clot ... Sun, 4 May 2014 03:40:34 EST 100,000 Spark Points Plus Today I hit a milestone, the last of the trophys to be won. When I started at Spark in 2011 I had high hopes for the journey and Spark has never disappointed me. I have learned so much and progressed a great deal. Especially I have met on the computer so many wonderful people. I cannot even remotely thank them enough.
True, I still need to lose about 20 more lbs. but I finally feel I can do this. No one has ever said 'why are you still not at goal?' And I appreciate that immensely. Some... Tue, 29 Apr 2014 13:02:01 EST My Vacume Cleaner 28 years ago I had to leave my first husband and about 4 months later I lost my job. There I sat on unemployment insurance (pitiful) in an apartment with 2 children in their teens and was able to pay the rent, utilities and had minimal left over for food. I had no vacum cleaner and certainly no money to buy anything with. A salesman came to my door and said he would sell me this lovely vacum cleaner (and it was a good brand and worked wonderfully) for $1200 and give me $600 up front for I for... Sat, 29 Mar 2014 22:11:51 EST It Just Gets Worse! This morning I opened the door and neither dog would go out. Nothing much I can do so they will have to figure out what to do about toileting. All accidents will be forgiven. When Charlie finally got up and checked the temperature it was (drum roll here...ta da,da da) -32 C.
I am not sure what the day will hold. It will warm up a bit but I will not start the car colder than -15 C. There is something happening at the clinic today that I wanted to support but I just don't know if I will go... Wed, 5 Feb 2014 12:08:46 EST Tracker Addiction This morning when I opened the door and put the little dog out she scooted around and then wanted back in very quickly. Then I opened the door to let the big fellow out and he looked out and turned around and went back to his bed. I do not understand but he went from 7 last night till noon today without going out. I wish my bladder was that good. So then I asked hubby to look up the temperature (one of his few jobs in life is to know what the temperature is) and he said -27 C. So I decided sa... Tue, 4 Feb 2014 19:51:41 EST Never Take Anything for Granted!! Firstly we are doing very well with my menu plan which runs for a month. What I did was develop a menu for a month of meals. It includes 31 blocks of time which has two main meals inserted in each category of lunch and supper. Breakfast around here is always porridge either Red River cereal or oatmal, coffee and 2 tbsp. of ground up flax seeds. Lunch is always a main meal, green salad, and .5 cup of coca zero(not for everyone I know but hubby and I miss having a little soda so we plan it. We ... Sat, 14 Sep 2013 19:55:51 EST Amazing Things! Firstly we got a phone call today from MEXICO, wow! Remember we are in northern Canada, really very northern where bears, moose and lots of other wild things are. Our sweet Mexican daughter wanted to hear our voices so she called us. I was born in 1947 so don't mind me if I find that amazing. She is the head officer at a bank and she will miss practicing her English with us but there will be others there to practice on. Her husband lost his job. He had a job in a casino for 2 yrs. and one day... Sun, 8 Sep 2013 19:42:25 EST Now, That is Exercise! Seeing as we have to stay in the frozen north this winter: That is because hubby needs some surgeries we have to prepare to heat our house without paying $300 to $400 per month for natural gas. That is for a minimum of 6 months where a house needs heat. So last yr. we put in a pellet heater and on chilly days in the spring we tried it out and it works ever so well. So I think we will be very cozy all winter long with popcorn and hot tea in the evenings reading or watching something on Netfli... Fri, 6 Sep 2013 18:29:37 EST Getting a Grip on Weight loss and Losing Friends After reading the Spark (I know I am a bit slow but I like to do first first) I really am feeling very encouraged. I adore my vision collage and spend the 5 minutes doing self talk for encouragement daily while reading the stuff on my collage. I love the 10 minute workouts too. That is about all I can do in the way of contortion. I am a walker and taking the dogs out for a good long walk is my main exercise. But the best thing I felt I should do is the month long menu. That was such hard work... Mon, 2 Sep 2013 13:36:07 EST My Heart, Dogs and More Berry Picking Yesterday I finally found out the results of the echocardiogram done on my heart and it is interesting. I have something called aortic stenosis. The aorta is the largest blood vessel in the body and carries reoxygenated blood from the heart through your arteries all over your body to use as a pathway for everything. At the heart is a valve to release and not release this life giving fluid without which you cannot live. My valve does not open and close as it should. At this time it is not life... Fri, 23 Aug 2013 12:19:50 EST Tired but Content Today I am super exhausted. Beyond what I thought possible for tiredness. I was up at 5 which was normal as I fell asleep by 9 last night. I immediately showered and washed my hair, made coffe, made breakfast and then spent a while on the internet while it held (have been having long periods of time without because of the changeover to a new and better system). By 7:30 I was bugging hubby to come and walk dogs with me as by 9:30 some friends all wanted to get into the forest to pick huckleber... Wed, 21 Aug 2013 22:13:39 EST My Lovely Vision Collage In the book 'The Spark' after the intro there are 4 topics that one needs to pay special attention to. Actually all of it needs special attention but I felt those 4 topics Focus, Fitness, Fire, and Positive Force were worthy of concentration and because the idea of making a vision collage was suggested I thought I would try to incorporate those ideas in the collage. I went out and bought a large poster board(colored cardboard 2'X3'. I found it at the drugstore. I had saved a small pile of ma... Sun, 18 Aug 2013 22:33:40 EST Reading 'The Spark' I was told in my spark coach session to make a blog today. So I guess I will. Firstly I wish the hot weather would come back. It is still nice but I really want to go swimming in our lake again. It was such fun! And I do love fun. Enough whining, we are going to town and I am shopping for new to me jeans and a new microwave. My sz. 14 jeans are slipping down around my ankles so need to get sz. 12. The thrift store is reopening today, Yay! I prefer previously owned stuff and I can get 2 pr. th... Fri, 16 Aug 2013 11:34:06 EST Wasp Sting Remedy.........Wow! I had posted that I would be very busy with my daughter and 5 yr. old twin daughters and boy oh boy was I ever. I am surprised I am sitting here thinking instead of napping. They arrived and it was just go, go! We planned an outing to the park and playground but before we could get going little Carolyn was stung by a wasp. This yr. we have a lot of wasps around and they can be nasty. Poor little girl, her finger swelled up and she was very upset and weeping. First I called a friend who knows ... Sat, 10 Aug 2013 17:52:01 EST Thank you! Thank you to all of you who read 'Super Dawg' which was written as a tribute to our lovely Badi who is over the rainbow bridge now.
Partly why I put that poem into a blog was because I was trying to figure out how to copy and paste and I finally got it to work. That has been a hard skill for me to master because it means going from one window to another.
Yes, we have a lot of wild animals around here. The foxes overrun the village and our dogs going a little crazy because they are ... Wed, 24 Jul 2013 12:30:38 EST Super Dawg I wrote this one day after walking our lovely german shepherd one day in the wilds and we encountered a moose.Super Dawg

I am Super Dawg, neither young nor old.
My job is to protect and serve.
A lot of protect and not too much serve.
I live with two humans, very different from each other.
They like each other a lot.
Because they are elderly and vulnerable I will protect them from many
things in this world that threaten their lives.

The olde... Tue, 23 Jul 2013 20:34:13 EST Very Serious Topic For those of you who often read my blogs you know I try to keep it light and on the humorous side. But today I reached a conclusion that I have to make a change which will make my daily activities a little different. I have always gotten up, dressed or not and sat down at the computer and charted out my life. I often end up short changing myself on exercise minutes as those darn dog walks go on and on. That is not serious but what is is that I decide what I will eat and put it down on my nutr... Sat, 13 Jul 2013 22:46:21 EST Amazing Me! Sometimes I am blown away with my own amazingness. Okay, okay, I am not always amazing but today I was. Firstly I went to chair exercises for the 10th time in a row. They are at the clinic twice a wk. and I love them.

Afterwards the weight loss support group met and I did a monthly weigh in. I had lost 4 lbs. My friend said she knows where they went. Oh, oh! Not a good sign for her. I know I have been getting a lot of exercise but that blew me away. Then I presented two different... Mon, 8 Jul 2013 19:51:54 EST Sheet Rain, Hiking and Where is my Ark? On Saturday night we had the most amazing lightning storm for about 3.5 hrs. The thunder would roll and then the lightning would roll over and over. Normally I would probably sleep right through this but at the start our smaller dog started to try to jump on the bed with me. I might have just let her come up but I am not too trusting of this kind of behavior as she might just have peed on the bed in her anxiety. So just a lot of warning to stay down but this was not working. Finally I went to... Mon, 1 Jul 2013 12:38:21 EST Earthquake! Today I took a trip with my friend Shirley to town. She had an eye appointment with a Dr. and we both wanted to shop. On the drive there we stopped at a plant nursery and asked if they had any plants extremely on sale and they gave us about 30 plants for $10. That is very cheap and we were grateful. Shirley wants to plant them in front of the seniors bldg. It is looking dull right now. So we need to do this in the next couple of days before Canada Day. That is 3 days from now. Tick tock, tick... Thu, 27 Jun 2013 22:29:42 EST Answer to a Question! First of all, a care aide is a person who assists people who with some needs taken care of can stay in their homes. It ranges from elderly who just need some assistance with housekeeping chores, cooking and maybe being driven to shop or appointments, sometimes supervised baths. The next category of care is helping with handicapped people with a wide range of needs. I have looked after people with early stage alzheimers, disorientation (that was hard as she spent the whole night roaming around... Thu, 20 Jun 2013 23:33:33 EST How to Make My Own Electrolyte Drinks? Yesterday was a good day. We went to Houston and had an appt. with the physiotherapist for Charlie. Charlie has arthritic joints and a problem with waking up at night with severe cramps known as Charlie Horses. This disrupts his sleep some nights more badly than others. We have asked lots of healthcare providers for help with this and it seems to be one of those things that no one is really certain about. One person said he needed to drink more water and he did that. He really does not need t... Wed, 19 Jun 2013 12:44:09 EST Heart Murmur Today both Charlie and I had appts. with the nurse practitioner and she had a student near the end of his training. I went only for BP meds and Charlie wanted new prescriptions of all his meds. He also wanted a referral for a physiotherapist because of all the muscle pain he has with his arthritis. So the NP took both of our BPs and listened to both of our hearts. This was the first time in a long time anyone listened to my heart and it turns out I have developed a heart murmur. So I need to ... Thu, 13 Jun 2013 22:45:16 EST Awesome Pool The pool in Houston was lovely. In the city where we used to live there had been a very standard pool for a long time and then the city built a new pool with a lovely décor, area for shorter people, a river with a current and the usual regular pool with swim lanes. This pool was patterned after that newer pool. It was built in 2006 and we enjoyed it a lot. The cost was $5 each and well worth it. Charlie who usually does lots of laps just spent his time in the river walking and then into the h... Sat, 1 Jun 2013 11:12:52 EST Trying the Pool In a quite small town about 90 km. away in the opposite direction from where we usually go is a town called Houston. We usually go to Burns Lake which is east and has great shopping but today we are going west because of a wonderful veterinarian. This town has a pool indoors with hot tub and all. After the vet appt. we are going swimming. This should be interesting. We used to go all the time when we lived in the city. With Charlie and all his arthritic woes this might be a good thing to do. ... Fri, 31 May 2013 13:39:20 EST Busy Past Several Days On Tues. morning we got up by 5 to get out of the house by 6 and walk the dogs and then drive to the city for an eye Dr. appt. When I stopped to walk the dogs 10 kms. from home our big dog took off into the bush and we could not get him to come back. With heavy hearts we took the little dog and headed to Prince George. First we visited with my previous employer and dear friend who was staying in a suite at the Sandman Inn in town visiting her mother. She now takes care of her disabled (brain ... Thu, 30 May 2013 14:22:38 EST Answers to Both Problems Yesterday I posted about the mouse in my house and I am so happy to say that a friend lent us her mousetrap so hopefully we will see results soon.
A dear friend suggested how to deal with the aggressive dog situation and after Charlie and I spend two days working on Dr. appts. we will put this suggestion in place. Yesterday I took Celest's suggestion to the two friends I work with and they agreed we can do this. I feel so lucky to have them on my side. And really Otto has them on his si... Mon, 27 May 2013 10:18:15 EST The Mouse in the House Yesterday was far too exciting. The first thing that happened really perturbed me and hubby is not taking it very seriously. But I want to be able to go to the basement and do laundry without worrying where I step. I had been doing some cleaning down there and on one of my trips down the stairs I saw a MOUSE scurrying under one of the shelving units. I am not terrified of mice but they give me the creeps. I live in this house and never invited any 4-legged creature in except for our two dogs.... Sun, 26 May 2013 10:15:36 EST Just A Lot of Rambling It's been a while. Yes, just busy with the stuff life is made of. The yard needs more raking and flower beds need digging up, dogs need walking and the house could use some deep cleaning. Lots of cooking going on as that is always of utmost importance but almost no baking. Today it is raining so I will bake the birthday cake for a friend whose birthday is tomorrow and I will make lemon tarts and rice krispie squares for all the people coming to the party too. It will be a turkey dinner made b... Sat, 11 May 2013 11:21:50 EST Crossroad Yesterday my husband and I went to the clinic for results on our blood works and he discovered he is prediabetic. Normally this would be bad but both of us realize our diet needs tweeking and we will do it. A wake up call was in order. This will sure help me as well who still needs to lose 25 lbs. Fri, 26 Apr 2013 11:01:01 EST Hauling Stuff! My sister bought a townhouse here in our village 2 yrs. ago. She sold 1/3 of it to a friend. That silly fool trusted her so completely he did not get any paperwork from her at all. Last summer my sister came here again and lived in the townhouse all summer and then her friend came and stayed there as well for about 6 wks. He returned to Korea after that. He is a nice fellow who was raised in Australia and then worked as a teacher in Korea and is still there. He became our friend too. In the p... Sun, 21 Apr 2013 11:49:22 EST Profanity My last blog entry seemed so inocuous. And yet I kept getting a warning that I could not post it because there was profanity in it. I went through it trying to figure out what the problem was I changed wrenched to twisted, and a few other words that were not really profane but I was running out of options. Then I got the idea maybe it was the type of dog my friend had so I changed the dog type to just dog and sure enough that worked. My friend has a shatzu. If you change the a to i it will be... Mon, 15 Apr 2013 04:53:17 EST The Walk Yesterday I finally was able to connect with my two best friends here in Granisle and we decided to go back to our usual Sunday afternoon walk. At that point Shirley brings her two dogs Sam and Muffin. Sam is a long haired german shepherd and muffin is a little dog. Annie has Buddy, a terrier and he is usually a rascal who will take off into the hills. Usually we walk at the fisheries which is a wonderful walk of about 2.5-3 km. not near any highway, so we can let all the dogs off leash. Add ... Mon, 15 Apr 2013 04:46:27 EST Friday: Home for 4 days now Well we are home and settled in somewhat. We have a path to the house but I have only unloaded about half the stuff from the car. I ache and need to rest. I was most concerned about getting to our medical and helping the dogs to adjust. Poor hubby is still a zombie. We took the dogs to a secondary road and just let them go and run. We walked about a mile but they ran around and were so happy taking in all the snow and birds. Fun to watch! The big dog Otto is so happy here, mostly he is happy... Fri, 12 Apr 2013 12:06:35 EST Home Again! Charlie and I left Baja on April 1, Monday. We had our two dogs with us Chica and Otto. They really did well considering we logged in 6000 km. that is about 4500 miles for you metric challenged souls. We went about 700 km. that first day and slept at Las Casitas. Charlie couldn't figure out the wifi so we didn't stay in touch. Las Casitas is a spanish setup hotel with a large courtyard with lots of units around it. It would have been fine but the darn pipe from the sink came off and we had a ... Wed, 10 Apr 2013 11:01:23 EST Yesterday's Spanish Class When we first arrived here one of the boaters had a spanish class in the marina and it was great. She had taught spanish in the US and taught us all a lot. But she went off to Mazatlan, so we decided to just spend 3 hrs. a wk. with a study group and there were enough of us able to teach that we could continue. I particularly am apt with pronunciation so I volunteered to do a class on that. Yesterday was the day so I had to do it. The number of us showing up is diminishing but the ones who did... Tue, 26 Feb 2013 13:43:00 EST The Rattlesnake Yesterday we went to the ranch of our friends. It is located about an hours drive from La Paz, the city we live in right now. The ranch is a heavenly piece of earth where the wind blows gently and it is always warm but not in the evening when it cools. It is desert but with a source of water like an oasis. The caretaker, the oldest brother in a large family of siblings in their 50s and 60s now grows peppers, tomatos, cucumbers and they have cattle. Those are tough looking cows with lean but s... Mon, 18 Feb 2013 10:09:29 EST Otto....New Dog Just a catch up blog about what is going on in life. Firstly the spanish teacher whom I became very fond of adopted a dog she found on the street. It is a pitbull with lots of scars, a bad case of ringworm, malnutrition and needs neutering. She could not keep him so was looking for a new home for him and guess who just had to help out. Of course, moi! First Charlie agreed to foster him for a wk. and then he fell in love and now we have a new dog. We named him Otto and he is about 7 - 8 yrs. o... Fri, 15 Feb 2013 09:56:24 EST Spanish Class The spanish classes every Mon -Fri have been excellent. I sure have made a lot of progress. By the end of Jan. our teacher is leaving and we have been discussing having a study group. This could be very interesting. I have put my name out there so I will participate. I could probably teach the class with some back up from spanish friends but I sure hope it doesn't come to that. The thing is that we need to break up the material and tackle it systematically. I have good pronunciation but not a... Wed, 23 Jan 2013 21:41:01 EST Oops! I am content today because I have time just to stay home and sort stuff out. Running out the door to spanish lessons 5 days of the wk. is taxing. It means getting up early, showering and trying to spend time on here all before going out the door by 8:15. Then I still have to walk the dogs and possibly deal with other stuff. Yesterday I should have come straight home after class as I was supposed to meet a spanish student to work on english and I FORGOT. Yikes! not good. And I don't have her p... Fri, 18 Jan 2013 12:06:17 EST Life is Good! Again I am just going to talk about anything I am thinking about. Firstly I can't stay on here very long because I have spanish at 9 and one of the teachers is coming for lunch and so that he does not think we are slobs I had better do some more cleaning. With 2 dogs going in and out the floor gets dirty. The teacher is a third year student of modern languages and he and I will chat in german. He also wants to see how a Canadian cooks Mexican food. He will be surprised. I actually do that wel... Tue, 15 Jan 2013 08:36:38 EST Tortillas and Avocados I was writing about how it has cooled off here. This is Mexico and by cooling off I mean that it is in the low celcius range. It still reaches in the 20s in the day but the nights are a little cool. I added a blanket to my bed but I still was not totally good. So yesterday I had the idea of possibly going to bed with socks on and that did the trick. Last night I only woke up once and that is amazing. A full bladder will do that but the great thing was that I fell right back to sleep for a tot... Fri, 11 Jan 2013 09:26:26 EST Pity the Homeless! It has cooled off a little here and I am having some difficulty getting used to it. I had to add several blankets to the bed and still was a little chilled. Went to walk the dogs yesterday and had to cut it short as I was too cool with only one shirt on. So I will adjust and no shorts till the weather gets up to speed. Pity the homeless! Wed, 2 Jan 2013 09:58:42 EST The 'Other' Grandparents! Charlie and I saw in the New Year the way the two of us would. First we went out and saw a movie. It was extremely good. I could tell by how many tears Charlie shed. The stars were Bette Midler and I am drawing a blank ( got it Billy Crystal). Marisa Tome had a supporting role. It was about being the 'other grandparents'. We saw too much of ourselves in this story though it does mean that our children are the pickiest of parents. The children were so fussy that they hardly wanted the grands n... Tue, 1 Jan 2013 12:01:35 EST
