GETINSHAPEGA's SparkPeople Blog GETINSHAPEGA's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Salad Bar Danger Zone I went to Jason's Deli a few days ago with a lady friend, and was able to eat a very reasonable meal - one little cornbread, a small teaspoon of nuts on my salad, and a HUGE plate full of greens and raw veggies. I was so proud. Then,

Today I returned to the same salad bar with my husband. He is a big eater - hard to fill up. His actions seemed to rub off on me. Suddenly, I found myself stockpiling food for the long haul, adding little tastes of the many processed goodies to th... Fri, 15 Nov 2013 21:27:49 EST A new breakfast favorite I have a new breakfast favorite.

In advance, I boil up some potatoes that are cut into cubes. I've been using these instead of eating lots of grains lately. But you can't eat a whole plateful at a time - maybe just half cup to one cup full

Start with non-stick spray in a nonstick pan. Add 2 egg whites and one whole egg. Start them cooking while you tear leaves in small chunks of 1/2 cup baby spinich. Once the eggs start to cook, add the spinach and add 1 cup of the ... Wed, 13 Nov 2013 08:24:17 EST Moving my household has gotten me moving! The past few months have been so busy. Bought a new home, got my current home ready to show for selling just too many times (sure wish it would sell), and cleaning up the new house -- all have been very physical activities.

The new house was a bit of a mess. Some older folks who had limited mobility owned it, and could not maintain the yard or keep the nooks and crannnies clean. So I have been on scrub duty, vacuuming and mopping my heart out, cleaning windows, etc. Oh, and he... Mon, 12 Aug 2013 08:33:41 EST Spring is just around the corner! It's going to happen - spring will arrive soon!

We had an awesome weather day today - low 60s and a little cloudy - but the air SMELLED like springtime. It was a perfect day to get the kayaks out for the first time this year, and spend a bit of time on the river.

We put into the Tennessee River in Downtown Chattanooga. Directions were easy - paddle upstream about 1 1/2 miles, turn around at one of our favorite restaurants, cross the river, then go downstream. Turn lef... Sat, 9 Mar 2013 17:39:28 EST Surrender to those things you cannot change Sometimes one can fight and fight - then suddenly realize that you cannot change it. When you surrender to a higher power, it can be an amazing stress reliever.

Background: Mom is 91. Until a few months ago, she was vital and able to live on her own. Suddenly, she quit eating, lost lots of weight, and got weak. Yet, she insists on living independently. She lives a long way away from me, but I have been her daily phone call for years -- so we are close. Every time she has a pr... Thu, 7 Mar 2013 11:12:18 EST Flu All that really needs to be said. About 2 weeks ago, we were traveling, and all the warnings about the flu were on the news. So I was using Airborne, Cold Eeze, Emergen-C all day long. But the conference I was at included buffet meals 3 times per day. I had hand sanitizer, and I also put some at the front of the line. But hardly anyone used it. Was hanging in there till about Wednesday. Then, stuffy head, itchy eyes, sore throat. Followed by sneezing. Then congestion. Maybe a fever - ... Wed, 23 Jan 2013 08:46:25 EST Happy Holidays! I wish everyone a happy holiday weekend. Stay healthy, and remember, it is not so much what you eat between Thanksgiving and Christmas, as it is what you eat between Christmas and Thanksgiving!

I will be eating light for the next day or so, knowing there is a big Christmas dinner headed my way. And, I'll get in a little extra workout time - even 10 minutes each day will help out.

Safe travels to those on the road. Fri, 21 Dec 2012 08:19:24 EST Happy Holidays! I wish everyone a happy holiday weekend. Fri, 21 Dec 2012 08:19:24 EST Reality -- and taking steps to change it. I was once an active, outdoorsy type. Visualize someone who hikes in the morning, then goes hang gliding, then rides her mountain bike for a bit. Someone who easily can handle a multi-day kayaking trip or hiking adventure or can do a 36 hour yoga intensive. Get the pic? Excellent physical shape.

Then time drifts by....

I am now about 30 pounds above the top of my new goal weight, and some 40 pounds above the lean machine I once was. Don't get me wrong -- I AM making... Wed, 5 Dec 2012 08:43:48 EST Rocktown

Less than an hour from me is an absolutely amazing hiking/bouldering/rock climbing area. I have heard about it for years, and several times started out there, but never made it. The rewards (great views) were so worth it.

Mon, 26 Nov 2012 17:59:13 EST Disc Golf Also called Ultimate Frisbee. Not my favorite sport, but actually on a cool fall day, it was great fun. Lots of sunshine, but not too hot. Of course, when the wind picked up, the discs went flying everywhere!! Sun, 25 Nov 2012 18:00:33 EST Holiday is over! Time to get back to eating right. Okay, so the last of the hoiday leftovers are gone, the house is almost back to shape. Time to focus on the next few weeks -- the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas has always added 5 pounds to my frame. Not this year!!

Monday, I am signing up for 3 week challenge (at Curves) to simply maintain my weight. My real goal is to continue to lose a pound a week, as I have been. My weapon -- restraint!

All those holiday treats that are offered to me will be a)ref... Sun, 25 Nov 2012 08:17:14 EST Getting back on track -- again! Another new week begins, and a new opportunity to start back on track. It was this week last year (just before Turkey Day), that I decided to get my life back in order. Well, in reality, I really haven't lost any weight in that year, but at Ieast I am starting to exercise. And I have SO much more balance in my life -- a good portion of the last 365 was getting my priorities straight, and finding direction of where I wanted my life to go. A lot of bad things have left my world - including ... Mon, 19 Nov 2012 08:38:30 EST Paddling along... Awesome day! Dropped the kayaks into the Tennessee River just before noon. Bright and sunny weather but kind of cool. The sunshine warmed us up quickly, as did the brisk headwind that counteracted any downstream current. Nearly 2 hours later, we got to our takeout point- after some hard paddling into the strong headwinds. We were kept company by a blue heron that flew from riverbank to riverbank as we cruised down his river. Great day. Sun, 11 Nov 2012 21:04:33 EST How a Vision Board can Help Get Back on Track So I fell off the path for a while - diverted from my route a little bit.

Last night, I made my vision board -- clipped lots of pictures from Shape, Self, Outside, Get Out, and other favorite mags. Pasted them all on a mat board. After that, I took a really good look at it. Amazingly, the things on the board - yoga poses, mountain biking, veggies and fruits, outstanding physiques -- they are not part of my day to day world yet. But things that I seem to spend the most time o... Thu, 8 Nov 2012 10:39:34 EST Getting Back on Track I have been out of sorts for more than a week now -- and slowly bad things have crept in to my world. Finding myself eating a bunch of little Halloween Snickers bars at my desk today was a low blow -- how did I get this far off my course.

Time to redirect and get back on the right track!! A little time on SparkPeople to get motivated again is a good first step!

Tue, 6 Nov 2012 16:34:28 EST Mixed up day! So I thought I had finished this big project I had been working on for the last week, and then at the last minute, broke a tiny prong. (I am a jeweler, the part that broke was less than 1 mm x 1mm x 1mm). But at this point, my only choice was to start all over again. So a few tears, and a call to my client to delay delivery for a few days. Normally, I would have gone face first into a bag of chips or something. Instead, i took a break, did a long walk, and went to the movies. AND, no po... Sat, 13 Oct 2012 19:23:14 EST Day 3: Moving Forward! I realized that I sit too much! So, after my morning workout, I arranged my workstation so that I could stand up and work for a few hours. I put on some "oldies" on Pandora, put on headphones and dance around a little bit while working. Felt good!

I was very hungry tonight, but still made sure to eat within my ranges for the day.

I love SparkPeople and the ability to track my eating -- and the ability to use the phone app to update on the go. Thu, 11 Oct 2012 19:57:14 EST Day 2: 60 pounds over 30 years = 20 calories/day too much!! Woke up this morning with an eye opening thought. When I got married about 30 years ago, I weighed 118 pounds. At Curves yesterday, I weight 178 !!!! That's 2 pounds per year. Which does not sound like much really. About 20 calories per day too much -- that's all it took.

Well, we all know that averages like that can be misleading, but the point is really clear. Very small changes can make a big impact over the long term.

Now it is time to implement some bigger... Wed, 10 Oct 2012 09:21:49 EST Day 1: Curves Two lady friends picked me up for my first day at Curves. After the obligatory paperwork, we did weights and measures. YIKES! I am fatter than I thought, and the lady said my size indicates I should be wearing a size 14, not the size 12 I've been wearing. (No wonder my pants always feel tight!) Then, the Curves rep showed me a video about Curves Complete.

I will be going back later this afternoon to have another Curves rep walk me though how all the machines work. And to giv... Tue, 9 Oct 2012 14:31:14 EST Day 0: Before I got started So yesterday, I was heading over to Curves to join. A friend asked me to meet for lunch beforehand at a Chinese buffet across the street from the workout place. While we were eating (okay, it was a buffet, and I ate 3 eggrolls and a bowl of soup, then a few veggies. Not good, but it could have been SO much worse.) While there, a "1000 pound family" came in. No, not 1000 pounds, but heavier than that. The tables are 30" wide, and this man was wider than the table!! His wife was a clos... Tue, 9 Oct 2012 14:24:55 EST
