FUNKYG1's SparkPeople Blog FUNKYG1's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community I am here 148 I have not been on SP for a very long time but I have been advised to track my sodium levels and this is the best place to do it. I have been fighting several things over the past few months but on Wednesday I was diagnosed with the early stages of "Congestive Heart Failure" and that has scared me straight. I am allowed only 1.5 litres or 6 glasses of water a day and have been placed on strong water pills and a different BP pill and told all kinds of other things but those ar... Sat, 20 May 2017 17:36:35 EST Pain, pain go away! 148

I finally got into one of the pain clinics. I had to take two days to go over the "Basic Pain" course which is mandatory. I even heard back from them regarding an appointment with one of their doctors and got an appointment - for January 3, 2017. That helps NOT.

Had to have a CT Scan for the pain in my lower abdomen, which I have suffered through for I don't know how long. Turns out I have a hernia in my bowel and have to see the surgeon. It has only... Sun, 30 Oct 2016 16:44:41 EST OMG 148
OMG is the best I can do right now. Have not posted for a while, actually have not been on spark people for a while. I seem to go from one thing to another right now. I have been waiting for over a month to be accepted into a pain clinic, either in the hospital that serves my community or another pain clinic that is not too far away. My doctor cannot do anything as he has no control over this issue so he did the next best thing - prescribe Emtec, which is like Tylenol... Sun, 2 Oct 2016 19:58:39 EST Slowly returning to normal 148

Heard from both daughters today, #1daughter just passed her probationary period at her job for her part time job discovered today that she has a full time job as of today. Just so very proud of her! #2 daughter who spent all of last week in bed is back to work today. Turns out she had a bladder infection that travelled to her kidneys causing tremendous pain. She says she is feeling better and I really hope she is. No word on the results of her hospital tests or... Mon, 6 Jun 2016 17:07:10 EST Things are looking up 148
What a difference a few days make, especially for me personally. Although I am still not 100% I am feeling better and my blood sugars are settling down somewhat. I found out recently that it could take up to a month for them to return to "normal". I have to be careful about my activities and I should have someone with me for any "adventures" like grocery shopping.

My DD is still not any better. She is still spending most of her time in bed however she did... Sat, 4 Jun 2016 21:33:10 EST Diabetes and Hyperglycemia 148

As you may divine from the title of this blog, I have recently experienced what could have been a diabetic coma. If not for the fast thinking of my sister and our doctor's MOA I could have gone into a diabetic coma. Long story short, I am scheduled to see a specialist on the 14th of June. Until now I have treated my diabetes as more of a nuisance but now realize that it can become very serious very quickly. I got "scared straight" you might say. I am working on... Wed, 1 Jun 2016 18:12:18 EST too many clouds in my life 148

So I gained a few pounds over the last little while. I forgot time and again to renew a crucial medication (Zoloft) and although I did not think it had affected me, I was very wrong. I went on an eating binge of junk food for too many days so here I am starting at day 1 again. I know I will do well however it just goes to show what meds I really need and what ones I can get along without.

Strangely enough, I am not that upset about this because I kno... Sun, 15 May 2016 20:28:17 EST Sun is shining and no clouds in the sky. 148

Good sunny Sunday to all and Happy Mayday. Doctor is very pleased with my blood work and my cholesterol is down (at least the HDL is which is good). This means I just may be able to get rid of that med. I am working on getting rid of most of my many meds so please wish me luck on that goal.

DH is out cutting the grass so I am going for my walk and then doing some gardening. I have a couple of beautiful peony's which are blooming so going to cut a coup... Sun, 1 May 2016 15:06:36 EST Challenges etc. 148

Today I joined the Walk this way challenge. I have walked the required 10 minutes and now I must tell at 3 people about my commitment to the challenge, so I think I have fulfilled that requirement.

Another challenge I am facing is getting my carbs under control. I am hoping my doctor can advise me on how to do this.

The last challenge (at least for now) is overcoming my insomnia which seems to be mostly caused by my Restless Leg Syndrome... Sat, 23 Apr 2016 17:04:57 EST Not my best day. 148

Well I am back to watching my grandsons on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Today certainly was not my best day food wise but that is okay. I really thought I would be over my daily carbs but it turns out I am over my daily fat intake. Not too surprising considering I a MacDonald's Bacon and Egg McMuffin for breakfast and a Tim Horton's BLT sandwich for lunch so tomorrow I will be extra careful about my food intake.

I hope you all had a wonderful Tuesday, I k... Tue, 12 Apr 2016 23:55:09 EST Being greatful 148 41

Hi all, just want to say how very greatful I am and how very blessed I am to have the husband and family I have. My family extends also to all my SP friends as well. I know I have not posted as much as I did in the past however this time around I am concentrating on losing the weight and getting my life in order. Past events in my life are starting to emerge from the compartments I locked them in many years ago and I am seeking help in acknowledgin... Sat, 9 Apr 2016 19:12:58 EST Adult children who should know better 148

My very dearest, best friend was recently the object of a horrible, foul language rant by none other than her adult son. Apparently he feels left out of family occasions because, in his words, he is never invited. His rant included the "fact" that his family has done absolutely nothing for him, especially his parents. This young man, in his 30's with a wife and 4 beautiful children, 3 boys and 1 girl, says that his parents do everything for his sisters but nothin... Sat, 2 Apr 2016 20:56:47 EST Three days of pain 198 148

Wow, where did that headache come from. I do not normally suffer from Migraines but the last 3 days have been spent in bed with all the lights out and an eye cover over my eyes. When I could see a bit, I logged on to SP and completed my challenges but have not tracked anything except my water. Keeping hydrated seems to help somewhat but not enough to chase it away. I am better today and hope to be back to normal tomorrow as our kids and grands ar... Sat, 26 Mar 2016 16:13:45 EST Exercise or lack thereof 148

Well you will not see me doing too much walking/swimming anytime soon. Last August I had a fall and broke my left ankle in three different bones - the one on the left or outer bone of the ankle, the bone running up the back of the ankle and the one on the right or inner bone. I spent 8 weeks basically in bed with a non-walking cast on and using a knee walker then a further 12 weeks in an air cast (or as I prefer to call it, my franken foot). I have graduated to a... Thu, 17 Mar 2016 23:09:49 EST Challenges 148

Well we have had power outages so I could not post my food but I still ate well and smart. Right now my biggest challenge is sleep. I am unable to sleep some nights but fall asleep around 6AM and then sleep until sometime in the afternoon. Tonight I will take a sleeping pill or actually half a sleeping pill as a whole one wipes me out completely for the next day. I am sure there are a lot of you out there who share this experience.

I hope all have a... Wed, 16 Mar 2016 18:56:43 EST A long hiatus 148

I have been away for over two years dealing with a lot of issues. My DH has been going in far too many colonoscopies and has another one is September of this year(the 6th in less than a year). My councilling has been good up until recently. I realized that one on one is needed soon as group has reached a plateau for me. Hopefully it will come soon. I am glad to be back where I know that support is always available.

Nora

249 <B... Sat, 12 Mar 2016 16:58:47 EST My Reality part 2 148

I have found some of my triggers - things that make very angry (which is sometimes a good thing as I get a lot accomplished), things that make me very sad and then there are things that start out sad and end up angry. The sadness I can deal with mostly but the angry can be very, very destructive. It is at these times I feel my self esteem/worth is at its lowest and it is very difficult to stay on top of my posting and my nutrition. I finally told my DH about an e... Thu, 9 Jan 2014 18:11:03 EST My Reality 148

Hello to all my Spark Friends, I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
As you see by my title I have discovered my own reality with regards to weight loss. Actually I think I have known it all along, I am just now in that place in my mind that I can accept it and work with it.

I am NOT perfect! I am not able to follow a plan every day! I have health issues that I cannot control and therefore am unable to exercise every d... Tue, 7 Jan 2014 18:31:21 EST Very unexpected interruption 148

Almost a month gone by without posting. The foot I had surgery on was run over by a small child on a bike (NOT my grandchild) and after seeing the doctor and sitting for many, many days with it up again, iced again, it started to not hurt as much. So got that done and BANG, out of nowhere, sick, sick, sick. Four days in bed or should I say four days in a make shift bed by the porcelain throne with a metal bowl in front of my face! Anyhow, that is behind me (fing... Tue, 1 Oct 2013 11:15:26 EST Incredible people 148

What a day I had on Friday. I took my 5 year grandson to his kindergarten class and picked him up again. SIL had an accident a while back and needs a custom made knee brace so he cannot do this. Any how, after that I went shopping for a pair of jeans and a couple of tops for myself and pants and shirts for DH. I got the jeans however, I now have to have them altered as they are about a foot too long. Clothes for DH fit him perfectly.

At the store whe... Mon, 9 Sep 2013 13:43:07 EST Miscellaneous/for Kerry's friend 148

Kerry, after I posted about my surgery I realized I left a few pertinent details out.

First of all I live in British Columbia and all Canadians have universal health care. I did NOT take advantage of this as I would have had to wait 2 or 3 years to have this surgery, so we paid privately and the cost was $3,300.00CDN.. The surgery I had lasted approximately 1.5 hours as I also had the Tarsal and Metatarsal bones fused so the spur would not come back(thi... Wed, 4 Sep 2013 17:02:43 EST Wheat Belly 148

I don't know if any of you have read this book or actually tried the cook book but right now I am just reading it. It is very interesting what he says about our modern wheat and all the whole grains, etc.. I am taking a lot of what he says with a grain of salt but will talk to my doctor about it when I see him next. He is the one who recommended the book to me.

Kerry if your friend is contemplating the foot surgery, I would say go ahead with it. I h... Mon, 2 Sep 2013 16:32:17 EST Back after 9 month absence 148

Hello to all my Sparkfriends. As you can see by my title, it has been close to nine months since I last posted. What have I been up to? Well let me see.

I have had surgery on the top of my foot to remove, for the third time, a bone spur and to fuse the Tarsal and Metatarsal bones so the spur does not return (hopefully). That is the bad part.

Our eldest daughter got married last month and of course that was such a busy time leading up to the... Sun, 1 Sep 2013 14:39:27 EST First blog of 2013 148
In my last blog, I told all of you what I had been going through during the last 6 or 7 months of 2012. I had even written a poem about it all (and I am not a poet in any sense of the word)!
At this time I would like to thank all of you who took the time to read, consider and answer it. It is times like these that you find out where your support comes from. Now it is time to move forward until the next trigger hits because it will come sooner or later. I am now b... Wed, 9 Jan 2013 15:58:57 EST A long absense and a (not very good) poem 148

My friends, I have been absent since Sept. 9. It has been a very rough few months and I hope the poem below will explain things.

Here I am, alone in the dumps
Listening to voices, taking my lumps
Inner voices cry "It's not fair"
Outside voices that don't seem to care
I feel adrift, don't know where to turn
Don't seem to have extra energy to burn
I am tired, so tired of constantly fighting
My body, my mind. They both se... Sun, 9 Dec 2012 15:38:43 EST A great Saturday night 148

Last night DH and I and our best friends went out for a great meal and a musical - Jersey Boys. What a great show! It took us back in time to a more innocent time and great music. I have always liked the Four Seasons but did not know the story behind their formation and their successes and failures. If you get a chance, go see it, I know I would go again.

The last six days have been jam packed with activities. Long walk on Monday, housework Tuesday... Sun, 9 Sep 2012 15:41:35 EST Update on just about everything 148

Since my last blog everything in our lives has turned around for the better. Knowing that our physical health issues have now been put to the very back of our minds, we can move forward. Personally, I have been walking everyday for the last 5 days. I am going for another walk after this posting.

I never fail to be surprised at the outlook on life once the negative is taken over by the positive. I find I have more energy and the odd thing that may not... Mon, 3 Sep 2012 14:17:17 EST Good News Day 148

Wow, what a good news day for our family. First of all, DH does NOT have to have further colon surgery. He goes back in three years for a follow up and that is it. Second, our son in law Mark does NOT have a recurrance of his bone or pancreatic cancer. He still has something wrong with his leg but it is not cancer. Third, I am still pain free, close to three weeks now. I have walked and done a lot of housework, trying to get the house in tip top condition after... Wed, 29 Aug 2012 00:06:11 EST Another beautiful day. 148

So I woke up with a foggy brain this morning and then slept for another couple of hours, made coffee and breakfast and read the paper. Our youngest daughter called to say baby Koby has diarhea and she did not sleep last night so I went over and watched the kids while she had a sleep. On my way, I stopped and bought a couple of baby gates as he is now crawling to beat the band and almost ended up outside!

Yesterday, I did go swimming but not for as long... Tue, 21 Aug 2012 00:33:51 EST Wow, what a busy time 148

I have barely been able to keep up with everything now I am pain free. My house is clean, my laundry and ironing is up to date, I have been swimming, looking after the grandsons, walking and planning a deck with DH. We are hosting our DD's wedding ceremony next August and need to get the back yard ship shape and bristol clean for it. We spent yesterday getting rid of old plants, weeds and other unwanted things in the front and back gardens and after a long time of... Sun, 19 Aug 2012 18:22:20 EST Unexpected break 148

Hello, hello. We are back after a surprise vacation. We went up to the Okanagan for a few days and just got back a few days ago. I even managed to lose 3 pounds while we were gone. I was at the pain clinic the other day, only a 7 month wait lol. It seems that I have bursitis in the hip and that is what was causing all the pain. The doctor gave me a shot of Cortisone and I have had no pain or very little pain since. I was even able to swim without any pain at a... Sun, 12 Aug 2012 23:46:58 EST "Serious" Challange, Day 2 148

Got up early this morning, stripped the beds and remade them and then did laundry. After most of the laundry was done, I went for a walk. It was a 30 minute walk, a bit shorter than yesterdays which was 45. At least I got it in today cuz I really did not feel like going, I wanted to sleep! See what I mean about lazy. I have also tracked all my food intake and my water (I am still short 2 glasses, but I have meds to take which will use that up).

I tr... Mon, 30 Jul 2012 22:51:13 EST "Let's Get Serious" Challenge for myself 148
503

I have had it with ME! It is time to really get serious about my life plan so that I have a life! I have been mired in something for a while and now it is time to leave it behind. 253

Starting today, I am walking or swimming or both every day. Yes I hurt, sometimes a lot and I will not be stupid about getting to the point of damaging myself further physically. I do, however, have to repair myself emotionally and mentally o... When one is in the depth of depression, longing and paralysis, things look very different to a person. Your insights and wisdom have helped me immensely. I can see myself with a clearer perspective. Thank you all for that.

I am still struggling to a degree but am not in the des... Wed, 25 Jul 2012 14:37:39 EST Thank you 148

I want to say thank you to all of you who responded to my plea for support. I know that I did not contact anyone but just knowing you were there helped a lot.

Yesterday was my mothers birthday, she would have been 88. Since coming back from Hawai'i in May, I have been suffering depression, anxiety and a feeling of total lethargy and ennui. I could not concentrate on anything at all. I spent yesterday basically doing nothing except making homemade sou... Fri, 20 Jul 2012 00:57:20 EST Brighter outlook 148

I read all the comments on yesterday's blog and they all have wisdom to them. I will be more open minded in future. And I will continue to blog.

On a brighter note, yesterday I spent the day with DH #1, her fiance, the kids, her SIL to be and her kids. We had a picnic and went swimming. I got a lot of sun over the weekend which really helps me build up immunity and helps with my MS as well. I feel better overall and look forward to tomorrow after getti... Tue, 10 Jul 2012 19:53:07 EST Huddles 148

I think I may give up on huddling. I huddled 5 teams last week and I got one reply (thanks Susan). I thought we were to use this tool as a means of staying in touch with our teams without having to leave a note on the message boards. I will check them periodically but I do not think I leave a message anymore.

Whinging isn't nice to do or to hear so this will be my final whinge.

Nora Mon, 9 Jul 2012 21:40:49 EST Attack of the body 148

As most of you are aware, I have various health issues, not least of which is MS. Well, this little health issue decided that it would make itself known for a while. It has attacked my body and my spirit for the last two weeks with this weekend being the worst. I have paid the price in more than one way and I think, have come through the worst it can give me this time around. I also gained a couple of pounds because I have not been able to keep up the job of maki... Tue, 3 Jul 2012 13:36:31 EST Excuses, excuses 148

Are so easy to come by, aren't they? I do not have time for this or that, I did not eat breakfast so my whole day is shot. Lately, this has been me and I do not want this to happen again. Today is DH's birthday and we will be going out to dinner so after tonight, that is it! Tomorrow morning I am back on track. This has happened so often in the past that now I am able to recognize the symptoms and not let it happen again.

BTW, #1 daughter got engaged ... Sat, 16 Jun 2012 20:27:37 EST Forgiveness 148

I must learn to forgive myself for what I view as failures. After returning home from Hawai'i, I have not followed my healthy eating plan instead I have had fries, mac and cheese and just generally allowed myself to become a blob. I know that part of this is the let down after all the planning for the wedding, the anticipation of a vacation and the actual arriving in Hawai'i.
I am also aware of the fact that the last time I was there was to escort my mother ho... As you can see from the picture, the beach was great, the weather not too hot with a nice breeze. I was told by the doctor that with my diminished immune system I am pretty much open to any and all bugs that are going around. So I have to build up my immunity.

Good news department - my ECG is normal! Yeah, I just have to journal my blood pressure each morning and evening to keep track and if my pulse is over 100, I have to go see the doctor ... Sun, 13 May 2012 15:00:16 EST Great day 148

Had a surprise visit from DD#2, mother of the two delightful boys on my profile page. Hard to believe that the baby will be 6 months old in about 2 weeks. The sun was out, the air was warm and DH and I enjoyed it tremendously. We had a bar-b-que roast and I made potato salad and a nice large green salad for dinner. After that, there was no room for desert. Tomorrow is also supposed to be sunny so I hope to get out and do some weeding. I once again hope everyone... I love living in a rain forest environment yet I get very low when it rains so much. We have mountains to the north of us and they hold in the clouds unless we have a real whipping wind which I also love. Today, the sun is out and I plan to enjoy as much of the day as possible.

Yesterday DD #2, my best friend Barb and I went out shopping. I got a couple of bras that are not only ... I always look forward to this type of day but am surprised when they come along unexpectedly. I went to the mall, got my new glasses but did not buy anything else, just wandered a bit, saw a couple of nice tops but again did not buy.
