FORMERFATGUY777's SparkPeople Blog FORMERFATGUY777's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community It works for me I kept my calories today to around 2000 calories. I took the time to track my eating for tomorrow. It's between 1600-1700 calories planned. This gives me wiggle room for a treat after work if I so choose. So eating plan is down pat. I'm working a desk job and am working to incorporate the job into a healthy lifestyle. We don't have stand up desks, so I have to work on the exercise thing. But the overtime is only going to last one more week, so I need to make hay while the sun shines so ... Sat, 7 Sep 2013 00:28:23 EST Done and Done Today I got up early. Truth be told I slept hard and woke up at 4:00 and couldn't get back to sleep. Mornings like this make me happy that coffee has no calories. I also took the time to track my lunch, snacks and supper. Thankfully it leaves wiggle room . I make a point of saving some calories for after work on Friday. The kids will want to get out and do something. I would rather go for a walk personally.

Other than that, I'm working long hours. I've been blessed with a... Fri, 6 Sep 2013 08:06:49 EST Pushing through This morning I really didn't want to work out. I was planning on doing walking for my Cardio exercise, but it's raining. Not that that has ever stopped me by the way. But today I just didn't feel like exercising in the rain. So I decided to stay home and try a workout from Sparkpeople. In that I have a set of dumbbells set up, I chose the lower body blast. I did wide leg dumbbell squats, 60 all together. Dumbbell lunges, 30 on each side I also did 60 calf raises.. That left my abs so ... Wed, 5 Jun 2013 09:07:44 EST Sunday I'm in the process of setting up a home gym for the myself and the family. We figured out a way to fit the elliptical trainer in our small home as well as a weight set. I also have a gym membership that helps. If I or anybody else for that matter pays 39.00 for a gym membership, I'm going to use it every day. Yesterday nobody was there when I did my workout and Star Wars was on the TV, the original one not the dorky last three they made. The time went fast. Today I'm planing on heading ... Sun, 2 Jun 2013 08:30:35 EST Saturday I have a busy summer ahead of me. We had the last child graduate from high school this last week. It was a fun Memorial day weekend to say the least. Next my middle kid is getting married in July, so I get the dual roll of Pastor and Dad, which means I can have a lot of fun with the ceremony. And we have a 25th anniversary as well. I don't consider myself old in the least. I still enjoy life and feel better than I did ten years ago. But last week somebody gave me a senior coffee witho... Sat, 1 Jun 2013 09:02:46 EST Weightlifting and fasting update I've decided to do a partial fast so I can continue my workout regime. That and some family members want to do it with me. The good thing is this way those I work with and people around me won't know we're fasting. They'll just assume were on a new diet kick. Besides, I never was a fan of fasting oneself into eternity before God was ready to call you home. So we have it worked out already. Besides, one can chase a thousand and two ten thousand. It's better to do this with a friend anywa... Thu, 30 May 2013 23:33:57 EST Weightlifting while Fasting Advice needed. It's been a great spring so far. I've switched work which is a nice change. I also am setting up a home gym to save a little money on gym memberships. But I'm doing well. It's going to be a busy summer with weddings, anniversaries and the like. But I'm going to enjoy every minute of it. Where I live, every day above zero is a very good day.

I'm doing research about long term fasting and weight lifting. I don't want to burn muscle while I do this. And I have to keep workin... Thu, 30 May 2013 07:39:44 EST Perkins Mistake I've begun to pack a gym bag and leave it in the back seat of my car. I can work out at gym Snap Fitness has in the nation, so I figure if I had a bag packed, it would be easier to squeeze in a workout. I still have to admit, I guess wrong with my eating. I have to learn never to order anything at Perkins except oatmeal. I tried their eye opener breakfast because it looked like a light meal, on paper at least. It was 750 calories. YIKES! At least it's early in the day and I can work of... Thu, 18 Apr 2013 09:39:16 EST Wearing my son's jeans and other reminders. Yesterday was business casual at work. So even though I don't feel comfortable wearing jeans to work, I got into the spirit of the day and donned on a pair of jeans. I happened to pick up the only clean pair I could find which happens to be a pair of jeans my son wore in high school. It did feel good being able to wear the same size clothes my son does. It reminded me of how far I've come, and how much I don't want to go back to what I once was. So little things like that serve as a remin... Sat, 13 Apr 2013 10:16:01 EST There's no such word as Can't! I have a great way to maintain what I've lost. I just get rid of all of my fat clothes. Then I have to maintain my healthy weight or go broke buying new clothes. And clothes my size are hard to come buy. I have a new job where I sit most of the time. They're working on stand up desks for those of us who are a bit on the hyper side. But until then I have to deal with it. I planned out my eating for the day and will do so for tomorrow as well. I also am planning out my workouts.
<... Sun, 7 Apr 2013 10:39:38 EST A new Plan. I have further refined my eating plan to fit where I am in my life right now.

1. Three 400 calorie meals a day. I use a dinner plate made in the 1930's, we would call it a salad plate right now. 1/2 veggies and fruit. 1/4 protein and 1/4 startch.

2. Eat three 200 calorie snacks a day.

Exercise daily. With my life, this is a must. I have to do this. No excuse.

This is a simple plan that will make healthy eating fit my current lifestyle. And I ca... Wed, 3 Apr 2013 14:39:20 EST Adjustments! It's OK to make mistakes. Many times it is necessary to reevaluate what we are doing and make adjustments. I currently work in the field of sales, I have to do this on a daily basis. If I'm not making sales, I have to ask why? My goal is to become the best salesman in the place where I work. It's that simple. And to do this reevaluating your approach is a daily task.

It is necessary to do this with our eating plan. I'm currently working a job where I sit most of the time. I have asked for stand up des... Tue, 2 Apr 2013 10:26:40 EST Adjustments! It's OK to make mistakes. Many times it is necessary to reevaluate what we are doing and make adjustments. I have was able to get a laptop due to some great timing, and what I credit is the leading of the HOly Spirit. Yes I am one of these nuts that think God does indeed bless his children and lead us to where we need to go. And I needed a laptop to take my work on the road. I have a good one for a price I can't beat. So the long and short of it, I'll be able to update my spark page more often.

Now I'm downloading my files that I need. I use Eswo... Thu, 21 Mar 2013 11:42:55 EST Let's be an example. I was at Mcdonalds today enjoying a good book and a cup of coffee when I noticed one of the people who work there. I like Mcdonald's coffee, and I am a regular there. Besides they have some healthy choices on their menu and have wifi. So I know this woman has a husband who loves her very much. She is also a hard worker. In fact when I have never seen her stop. But she is significantly overweight. She also was in severe pain today. It's evident from how she moves, that she has significa... Tue, 19 Mar 2013 11:49:57 EST Update and rejoicing I wanted to take some time, not that I have time, to update you folks on what has been going on in my life. I lost my job of 11 years where I was working. At first you panic. Then you pray and ask others to pray. And I sent out applications. I have discovered two things. First and foremost, unemployment insurance is not worth the effort. You have to jump through so many hoops and go through so much red tape, I would much rather work. I couldn't imagine having to be on it for a year. Bu... Mon, 4 Mar 2013 12:16:10 EST Trials, Car accidents and miracles. In the last couple of months my wife was hit by a car walking to Mcdonalds, I lost my job, my son rolled his two times yesterday. But through it all we have seen both my wife and my son walk away from an accident that should have done them serious injury. We have seen Jesus supernaturally provide for us as well. I know as a Christian when you are going through this many trials, that God has something wonderful in store for you down the road. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but... Thu, 24 Jan 2013 10:08:05 EST Update With being unemployed, I thought it would be nice to take a vacation on the governments expense for an extended period. Then the feeling past and I got out and began to fill out job applications. My primary goal is to find a job where I can be a blessing to people that works with my church hours. I have several applications out and will continue to fill out at least one every day until I find employment. But I do feel good about one I am turning in this morning.

I've been goi... Fri, 18 Jan 2013 12:23:47 EST No Going Back. Still no lead on jobs, but I just started to look to be honest. I am setting myself on a daily schedule, which starting tomorrow is looking for work every Monday through Friday, working out, devotions and church work. I refuse to sit around and watch netflix all day. I had someone give me a gym membership which I deeply thank God for. My old membership was through my job. I made it to the gym today and did cardio and an intense upper body workout. Now I'm have to get cleaned up so I can... Wed, 16 Jan 2013 10:34:48 EST Prayer request I would like to request prayer. I lost my job today. I need prayer for direction and a place of employment where I can provide for my family and use the gifts that God has given me. As for me, I'll land on my feet. Jesus never closes one door without opening another one. And I do have uneployment insurance.

I would like prayer though.

Thanks Mon, 14 Jan 2013 16:34:00 EST temptaitons One thing weight loss and my spiritual life have in common is simple. Temptations are a part of life. With my spiritual life I can take certain steps to keep me. For example; I have Covenant Eyes installed on my computer so I can be accountable to my wife with my online activities. There are other rules I have that help me stay on the straight and narrow as well. Let's face it, we may be strong enough to resist temptation, but if you're an alcoholic, why put yourself in a place where you w... Mon, 14 Jan 2013 08:12:18 EST Lessons from the Seals I have the day shift at work today, so I wanted to do a quick update. I read the story of Abraham in my devotions this week. I'm impressed with the fact that Abraham didn't reach out to God, God reached out for Abraham. Abraham became what and who he was because of God's grace. Now the word grace means unearned favor. But it's a favor that is compelled to act. When you care about someone you have to do something for them. That's grace. God looks at us with favor and is compelled to act ... Thu, 10 Jan 2013 08:18:48 EST Goal in sight. If I want to reach my goal by my son's wedding in July, I have to lose about ten pounds a month. It sounds like a huge amount when you look at it. But I have the benefit of being a tall guy. This can be done. Ten pounds a month would put me at my goal in June, the rest of the month is cushion.

I can jump start my metabolism by weights and nutrition. Drinking green tea, drinking my water, eating six meals a day instead of two or three huge ones will help. And doing cardio and s... Mon, 7 Jan 2013 21:43:07 EST Loving healthy foods. I'm starting to eat more foods in the category that you could call clean eating. My kids are looking at what I cook with very suspicious eyes. They think it's a conspiracy trying to get them healthy. The truth is I just don't feel like making two meals all the time, one for me and one for everyone else. And if I have to do most of the cooking, I want to do it my way. I made my son a grilled cheese sandwich for his supper at work. He doesn't know it, but I used extra virgin olive oil in ... Mon, 7 Jan 2013 21:34:42 EST I may try this for my lunch or supper. It would be different for someone like me. Fried Rice With Tofu and Broccoli

I like to use brown rice for this dish, though you can make it with white rice, too. Use the same pot in which you blanch or steam the broccoli to cook the rice.

1 bunch broccoli, crowns broken into florets, stems peeled and diced

2 tablespoons canola oil or peanut oil

1/2 pound firm tofu, diced

1 to 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce or Thai fish sauce

2 eggs

2 garlic cloves, minced... Sat, 5 Jan 2013 14:17:00 EST Vegetarian Red Beans and Rice. Monday's Lunch 1 cup of long grain brown rice (Note: You could use white rice if you wanted to, but brown is much healthier.)
2 cups of dried red kidney beans that have been soaked overnight
1 medium red onion, chopped
1 medium bell pepper, chopped
2 stalks of celery, chopped
6-8 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 cup of chives, chopped (Note: I used dried chives this go around, but you can use fresh as well.)
1-2 tablespoons Cajun or Creole Seasoning
1 tablespoon of smoked pa... Sat, 5 Jan 2013 14:08:01 EST A New Toy! Yesterday I picked up an electric steamer from Wal Mart to assist me in cooking healthy foods. I tried it out on rice last night and am happy to say it turned out great. I'm never going to cook rice any other way. I then steamed some veggies and shrimp for my lunch at work. So today I'm feasting on steamed shrimp with rice. My kids noticed it can double as a deep fat fryer. My comment was that they can't defile my steamer with garbage. I'm going to try it out on cod loins tonight. I'm g... Sat, 5 Jan 2013 08:44:17 EST Checkpoints One thing I believe that all of us need in our life are checkpoints. We have computers we hook our cars up to to ensure they're running in peak condition. And if their not, they can tell you what's wrong. We have such a checkpoint in our spiritual life as well as our struggle with weight. For example; if I get on the scale and my weight is up five or ten pounds I know instantly something is wrong. I can do two things. I can get frustrated and throw in the towel, or I can get frustrated a... Thu, 3 Jan 2013 08:47:46 EST A different kind of peace The Bible says, "Let everything that hath breath Praise the LORD". I have no idea what lies ahead of me in 2013. I expect the year to be filled with many wonderful moments. I also know that there may be much sorrow in store for me. I realize life comes with no promises. But no matter what challenges I face, I am never alone. There is a peace that comes when you give your life over to Jesus. It isn't like the peace we think of. Sometimes I'm going through some pretty horrible challeng... Mon, 31 Dec 2012 21:07:29 EST Calorie check Based on the information I've received from fitbit, I have to readjust my calorie intake. I thought I was burning more calories than I have. Even if I work out daily, the rest of the day I'm not very active. Not my fault by the way. I drive a desk for a living. So I find ways to be more active, for example; I do more hall checks at work than required. And I adjust my calorie intake to allow me to lose weight. Besides if I eat healthy food I can eat a heck of alot of food and still lose ... Mon, 31 Dec 2012 18:57:22 EST A dieter's Prayer My church tradition almost never writes out their prayers. We usually pray from the heart as the Spirit leads. However; there are times writing out prayers ahead of times works very well. Weddings and funerals are a good example. I wrote this prayer this morning before church. It expresses what many believers feel concerning their battle with weight. And I also believe if we surrender our appetites to Jesus and choose to eat for God's glory, it could make a difference in our lives.
... Sun, 30 Dec 2012 15:32:31 EST Motivation There are times when I'm reminded of how far I've come. When I am reminded of what my life could be like in this moment of time, I have to humble myself and thank Jesus for His deliverance. Today a gentleman came into work significantly overweight. For him, walking was a struggle. He was out of breath and miserable to say the least. I know where he is coming from due to the fact, I wasn't far from where he was. The fact that I'm still living on the right side of the dirt, and enjoying l... Sat, 29 Dec 2012 13:52:54 EST Who changed the Standard. Today is a typical slow day at work. So I brought my copy of Today's Living Bible to read. I was reading the book of Acts and refreshing my memory concerning what a New Testament church is supposed to look like. I am fully aware that they were far from perfect. They had liars, prejudice, division, immorality in some cases and worse. But they're was a presence about them. I also have to admit that if the 21'st century church in America is everything Jesus died for, then the Bible is a fal... Sat, 29 Dec 2012 12:48:47 EST Friday's ramblings. It's a very slow day at work this morning. It's the season where the tourist tend to leave us alone and we have our town to ourselves. It wouldn't be bad except some days it does tend to get a bit chilly to say the least. I took the time to check out the blogs of my spark friends. I figure if you care enough to want to be my sparkfriend, I can at least try to stay in touch and be an encouragement. The funny thing is I have the history channel on TV for background noise and off things, M... Fri, 28 Dec 2012 11:22:08 EST New Beginnings If you would like to see a perfect man, you'll have to look elsewhere. If you want to see a man who hasn't made mistakes, again you'll have to look elsewhere. But the good news is that doesn't matter much in the long run. Because there are indeed new beginnings in this life. One time I had a computer that wasn't running right. It was slow as molasses in January. I could get rid of it and get a new computer, but i'm one of these nuts who enjoys old computers. So I decided to do some cle... Thu, 27 Dec 2012 09:53:32 EST Let's Do This I believe with all my heart the success or failure of anybody's weight loss begins in the mind. You have to apply a Biblical principle written in the book of Daniel, "Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the kings meat" (Daniel 1:8), and in Romans 12:1-2 , "Be not conformed to this world but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind". The passage in Daniel means to make up your mind. The key is to make up your mind you're going to eat healthy and exercise. And you need to conti... Wed, 26 Dec 2012 09:03:18 EST A Guide to Understanding Northern People It's -3 this morning. For this time of year, believe it or not, thats warm. It could be much worse.
I have learned the code of the north. First of all when it's bitter cold and we see someone from down south, we tell them it's a bit of a nip in the air. But when we see a fellow northerner, we compalin about the weather all day long. Secondly; when driving down the road we tend to wave at everybody. And the wave is lifting two fingers off the steering wheel. (It drives city peopl... Wed, 26 Dec 2012 08:50:22 EST Never Quit Growing I was able to see all of my kids this Christmas. My middle son and his fiance stopped by on their way back to college. What's nice is she's a like a member of the family already. I have to laugh at them though. For years they talked for hours on the phone and told us that they were just friends. The fact that they're engaged isn't a huge surprise. One one hand one kid moves out for good, on the other hand I gain a daughter. I win twice over on this deal. We didn't have time for a workout... Tue, 25 Dec 2012 21:36:14 EST Christmas at our house. I've just come into the possesion of an old beat up Weber grill. I had a really neat one that I loved, until my kids decided they wanted a fire pit and burried it in the yard. This comes from the same two geniouses who once washed the inside of my car with a garden hose. It does work nice as a fire pit, but there is nothing better than a Weber kettle for grilling and smoking meat. So now I have a grill to refurbish and clean up. And then I'll be able to accomplish a family tradition. Tha... Mon, 24 Dec 2012 14:10:00 EST Writing project I have found Sparkpeople a tremendous blessing in my life. I enjoy the encouragement I receive from others. I also find that I enjoy writing. Usually an idea hits me and I just share my heart. I could take credit for it, but much of it is due to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. It's the same thing that happens when you go to church in a town where nobody knows you and the preacher has a sermon that is so fitting to your life you swear he was reading your mail. The truth is, Pastor's a... Sat, 22 Dec 2012 09:04:51 EST Keeping it simple I believe the Bible is more than a religious book. I find it filled with practical advice that can be applied to every area of your life. The Hebrew food laws are a perfect example. If you examine the food laws of the Old Testament, they are an excellent guide to healthy eating. We're not in bondage to them, but if you follow them, you'll live longer. It seems that God having created us, knows how to feed us in a way that's nutritious and healthy.

I have learned one thing as... Fri, 21 Dec 2012 13:13:49 EST Why I love Christmas I have to admit, when it comes to Christmas I still act like a little kid. Of course the my family would say, I act like that all year round. You don't have to grow up until your 60 I say. I used to say 40, but I turned 40 and I wasn't ready to grow up yet. I enjoy attending church on Christmas Eve. I still shake the packages to see if it rattles or rustles. I laugh at my daughter who to this day, gets so excited about giving a gift that she ends up spilling the beans long before we ope... Thu, 20 Dec 2012 12:29:11 EST The home stretch Today I was thinking of how far I've come. I lost ten inches off my waist thus far. And I have to admit, I enjoy the fact that now my upper body is bigger than my waist. I enjoy being able to work out, in spite of the fact my body doesn't want to cooperate at times. Now I'm on the home stretch
And I've learned a few things.

1. For me exercise is not optional. I'll never control my weight and get healthy if I fail to tone up. I can turn from a flabby fat guy to a flabby sk... Wed, 19 Dec 2012 09:53:34 EST Inspired-Thank You It's December up north with no snow. The long and short of it is work is a bit slow. I've spent some time reading the blogs of both men and women who have reached their goals and made an incredible transformation in their life. I have also been inspired by both men and women who have lost a significant amount of weight and are moving ahead to complete their journey. When i see what others have done, it encourages me to keep moving on. Weight lifting isn't easy at time, and sometimes I ju... Tue, 18 Dec 2012 20:50:17 EST A moment of laughter I was having coffee at Mcdonalds reading the bible. I was reading the book of Revelations and I have to confess, I laughed out loud. Now let me set the scene. John was exiled on the isle of Patomos. He was about 90 years old at the time. It was Sunday and he was in a remote place lost in worship. We don't know if it was a cave, a seacoast or what, but it was very remote. He was alone with God. This Sunday Jesus manifested his physical presence to him. My Grandfather was in his 70's w... Tue, 18 Dec 2012 13:26:10 EST Obesity in the Church. I had a light bulb come on the other day. I was at a restaurant and saw a significantly overweight gentleman eating more than he ever should have. And I thought to myself, "That used to be me". I am a different person than I used to be and I thank God for that. But then I thought of the spiritual life of most Christians in America. I have to admit, instead of changing our world, we are allowing the world's values to change us. And as I sat their I thought that there are a great number of... Mon, 17 Dec 2012 17:53:54 EST Late workout due to Tigger I didn't make it to the gym before work this morning. I was up last night watching the Tigger movie on netflix. I happen to get a kick out of tigger. Sometimes I can relate as my family can attest. It was enjoyable though. I till remember my oldest when he was little laughing his head off at tigger, "Blech, Tiggers don't like honey". He got a kick out of it. I still like Bugs Bunny and Road Runner as well.

So After work I'm hitting the gym. I plan on doing the following: ... Sat, 15 Dec 2012 13:50:31 EST Exercise is a must in my book. I've come to the conclusion that daily exercise is as important to our lives as bathing and eating. The more I read on the subject, the more I realize that we are designed to be active not to be couch potato's. Yesterday I caught an article on Olympic athletes. It turns out they live longer than the general population. This was attributed to their exercise. The conclusion is obvious. If we desire to be healthy we must have exercise as part of our daily life. And as we grow older and as o... Sat, 15 Dec 2012 09:45:59 EST An unexpected compliment I got into a conversation about my weight loss with a coworker this afternoon. She's a cook at work. She told me I look good for a man my age. That made my day. A compliment can keep me going for weeks. Fri, 14 Dec 2012 13:30:41 EST Feeling Good! I'm feeling really good this morning. I'm not talking in the physical sense. Physically I've overdid it with the weights and have a dull ache in my one knee. My shoulder hurts due to the effects of weight lifting on a muscle that has been neglected for years and possible arthritis setting in. I don't know and don't care. I'm going to keep going no matter what. I'm just going to switch my shoulder exercise to side shoulder lifts to be safe. They have a dual purpose of being easier on the ...
