FITJANE's SparkPeople Blog FITJANE's Blog on SparkPeople, home of free diet plans and a healthy living community Get it going I have made some positive changes in my diet, but also some lazy habits. Too much easy snack type food. Processed food. I have quit almost all artificial sweeteners and have lost my taste for them. Never drink soda. But a little more alcohol than I used to.
Where do I go now? What do I need to improve my health?
I need some weight loss, so decreasing processed food and baked goods and cheese.
I need to increase my exercise, aerobic and strength.
I need to ma... Sat, 18 Nov 2017 19:26:39 EST Sugar Challenge, missing my Mom I have many issues, but evidently one of them is "situational struggles with sugar"! I decided to take the 21 day sugar challenge and day one was the "test". I think I knew that going into it, so it confirms my impression of my behavior.
Sugar and sweets (chocolate, pastry, baked goods, candy, etc) are my biggest downfall. I just love them. I have seen that they don't love me. I know that when I avoid this stuff, I am healthier all the way around. Besides feeling better, I find m... Tue, 13 Oct 2015 14:07:20 EST Nearly a year It is almost one year since I made a goal of 30 minutes of exercise EVERY DAY. It is a modest goal, but I was going for consistency. Later this month will be my one year mark if I continue to be successful. I am so happy that I haven't missed a day in almost a year.
My next goal is to reduce my sweet habit. Again I want to make it a modest goal. I want to succeed, not set myself up to fail. Any ideas on how to form this goal would be appreciated. I don't think eliminating sugar is... Tue, 1 Jan 2013 22:38:51 EST This year I decided I needed to work on my consistency. I found a site called HabitForge that helps keep you accountable. I get an email every day to see if I have done the thing I planned to do. The thing I chose was "exercise 30 minutes daily"
Now, 30 minutes is a small amount, but I have a tendency to do too much followed by too little (ie nothing). So this was a good choice for me.
To date, I have gone 171 days consistently of "working out every day". Many days were more ... Fri, 20 Jul 2012 11:05:12 EST This year I decided I needed to work on my consistency. I found a site called HabitForge that helps keep you accountable. Fri, 20 Jul 2012 11:03:56 EST Triathlon T I was looking for a tshirt to wear yesterday, and found the tshirt from my first sprint triathlon 6 years ago. Training for that was the beginning of my trip to improved fitness and weight loss. I lost about 30 pounds and moved from couch potato to running a sprint distance tri.
In the 6 years since, I have maintained my weight for the most part, being as much as 10 pounds up from where I am now at times, to as much as 8 pounds down. I feel pretty happy that I have maintained pretty w... Tue, 5 Jun 2012 14:51:25 EST Setting a deadline. I think maybe I need a goal date or deadline. Being loose with this takes the stress out of it, but also lets me meander along on my weight loss journey without an arrival time.
I think this week I will make some weight loss schedules I can work towards.
I think my first mini goal will be 5 pounds by Halloween. OK, there, I've made a challenge.
Just stay out of the candy aisle! Wed, 28 Sep 2011 09:04:48 EST I can do this..... I have been struggling, and thought it had been a year since I had logged on to Spark People.
But, guess what, it has only been 5 months or so!
I broke my leg in April. That put me out of commission for about 6 weeks, lots of sitting, etc.
MId-June I got the ok, and seriously biked for 5 weeks, training and completing a 7 day 550 mile bike for diabetes through New England coast and mountains in July.
August was a week of horseback riding in the mountains of Colorado. W... Mon, 26 Sep 2011 16:56:52 EST "Just because it's on sale doesn't mean I have to buy it" I was reading an article on organization the other day, and of course one problem is aquiring too much "stuff." I ran across this sentence, and it has been resonating with me.

I am a real sucker for a "good deal." If I see a great bargain, I am strongly pulled
to buy it. Some times it is something I want and need, but often it is "another black
t shirt" or the like. The article said that you can look at the item, admire it, acknowlege
the great sale, but then le... Wed, 6 Apr 2011 14:41:30 EST Nice little visitors
I have had a fun 2 weeks. After our tripto visit my youngest daughter
we brought her home with us for 2 weeks. Although I haven't really
suffered with "empty nest syndrome" it is fun having her around. She
had some work she needed to do and a quiet place to do it, so it has
worked out well. I will be sad to see her go back this weekend.
Then our son, daughter in law, and grandaughter came on ... Tue, 5 Apr 2011 16:57:40 EST Survived the Weekend. I went away for the weekend to visit family. I would say I did about 50% better than I usually do when I am away from home. Far from perfect, but some improvement. I will count that
as a positive.
I ate most of my meals out. But I was more careful about what I ordered, and left some food
on my plate. I ate oatmeal for breakfast when everyone else had pancakes, and I was ok with it....didn't feel deprived. Had birthday cake, but just a small piece, and not seconds.
Sh... Mon, 28 Mar 2011 11:15:34 EST Supper? Last night I got home late from work, too late to want to cook.
I assembled what amounted to dinner out of my frige and leftovers.
I ended up with a mound of cooked cabbage, a pile of pumpkin with
a spritz of butter spray, salt and pepper, some cottage cheese and some
tuna. It looked rather pathetic. But it was filling. I didn't get hungry
and went to bed feeling just right. And it was pretty healthy.
But I think tonight I will do better. Food is fuel, and... Wed, 23 Mar 2011 13:06:26 EST Eating better decreases hot flashes. This is my experience. I'm not sure if it is the whole foods and lack of processed ingredients, or, maybe more likely the negative calorie balance. But whatever it is
I can really tell a difference when I am eating right.

Another point for my advantages card! Tue, 22 Mar 2011 12:50:09 EST What is my problem? This is a contemplative essay for myself. I have been struggling since December, and an entire quarter of a year is gone now forever without getting back on track.
I have had a good day or a good week, and then slide back into trouble.
I have been full of negative thoughts about myself and my body.
I have been unable to walk or run due to a foot injury.
I am sleeping poorly.
I am unfocused and restless.
It all seems to work together and keep me off track.
... Mon, 21 Mar 2011 12:16:23 EST A Study of Hats! My son mentioned that our granddaughter needed a floppy hat. To keep of the sun (when it
happens to come out) while out in the stroller. All you grandmas know that there is nothing
more fun than getting something for a grandchild. Except making something.
I LOVE being creative, and this was a perfect opportunity.
I started with a simple idea I found on the internet and make her first hat.

Tha... Thu, 3 Mar 2011 16:28:36 EST Using up what I have stashed... I finished a quilt for my daughter this weekend. It is only about 4 years late (was supposed to be for high school graduation). I found it when I was trying to organize my sewing stuff, and decided to get to work and finish it for her birthday. It feels good
to have some projects getting completed. My hope for this year is to finish up projects and
empty out stashes. I have started on emptying out my pantry and freezer. I'm trying to use
up what I have, not buy more stu... Sun, 27 Feb 2011 19:33:18 EST Saturday I am feeling a bit better about things the last couple days. I've had a lousy cold, so maybe that
has ruined my appetite, but I have felt like my eating isn't "out of control" like it sometimes is.
I got a much needed haircut on Thursday, which was sooo relaxing and looks so much better.
When it gets a bit long the frizzies start to get unmanageable. Last night after work, DH and I
went outside and cross country skied for over an hour in the twilight as new snow was comi... Sat, 26 Feb 2011 11:47:51 EST New month coming, get rid of the old attitude, and back with the new. I seemed to have veered off track this winter. Got a bit lazy over the holidays, and ate too much as well. Then I started having foot problems (metatarsalgia, a bunion, and arthritis in one toe)
that have made it impossible to keep up my walking and running. I have added several new
routines to replace a couple new workout dvd's, including kettlebells, which work
up a good sweat. Finally got my bike in the house and onto the trainer, but overall, my consistency ... Fri, 25 Feb 2011 12:16:53 EST Turkey Trot We ran our Turkey Trot yesterday. My husband and I, son, 2 daughters, and son in law all
ran. There were 500 or so runners. It was a chilly 30 degrees.
It was the first official 5k I had run.
I had 2 goals for the race: to run the entire distance, and a time under 40 minutes.
I made them both.
My time was 35:11 minutes, even better than I had hoped. I had enough left to sprint
the last quarter mile (perhaps "sprint" is to strong a word, but I did pick up ... Fri, 26 Nov 2010 17:57:03 EST Rereading Beck I am joining some of my friends and re reading Beck. I started this weekend with the first couple chapters. I know I need to redo some of the exercises, like:
Hunger won't kill me, and making my environment less tempting by removing junk food etc.
I haven't bought anything for a while, but I think removing what junk food is there by eating it is perhaps not the best way to fix my environment.
I think tonight I will have a pow wow with my husband and see what treats he reall... Mon, 8 Nov 2010 11:49:55 EST Big week ahead! I thought I would have a couple quiet weeks to get life back on track, but that never happens,
does it? My son called last night, and the grandbaby we were expecting at Thanksgiving will
probably be coming early! Next week, to be exact!! So, the baby quilt that I thought I had
3 weeks to get done needs a speed finish this weekend (I will probably be sewing on the binding
in the car on the way there lol).
So, feeling excited and restless this morning, I decided to... Thu, 4 Nov 2010 11:43:22 EST Turkey Trot, a new family tradition Last year my oldest daughter (who is running a marathon in 2 weeks) thought it would be fun
to do a turkey trot, a 5k on Thanksgiving morning. We live in a small town and the nearest run
was nearly 2 hours away. I just couldn't justify driving 4 hours on Thanksgiving just to spend less than an hour racing.
So we decided to do our own.
We mapped out a course. I printed up t-shirts for everyone, even the 2 dogs. We had entry
forms and gift bags. There were prizes f... Wed, 3 Nov 2010 08:44:40 EST Everyone Votes Today Biggest plus of election day I guess is to let our voice be heard. But almost as good
is the end of those persistent phone calls and political ads for a while.
I am going to stop on my way to work this am and vote.
Tue, 2 Nov 2010 09:35:16 EST Intervals for weight loss I have been losing weight in intervals over the last few years. Lose a bit, coast, push and
lose some more, maybe gain a little, then lose again. I have done fairly well at keeping it off,
but I need to keep pushing to my goal, which is another 15 pounds.
Today I am focusing on what I am doing ornot doing that is different from when I was being
more successful at losing. Of course I understand it is harder as you get closer to goal and
your calorie needs decreas... Mon, 1 Nov 2010 13:49:29 EST gbr beat texas Fri, 15 Oct 2010 22:00:03 EST Riding Gorgeous fall day. We decided to enjoy it and go for a horseback ride. The dirty house will still
be dirty next time we have a rainy day.
Enjoy the moment! Thu, 14 Oct 2010 18:15:31 EST Eat junk, feel like junk Yesterday I had snacked on too much junk and generally felt bloated and sluggish. Last night I sat on the couch and watched some dvr episodes I had missed. I messed with my computer and ipod. I really felt very unproductive.
Aha! Perhaps I will avoid the junk food today. I'll bet I will feel better, less bloated and more energetic!
Maybe I'm not too dense to figure this stuff out. Tue, 12 Oct 2010 10:39:46 EST Hoarders I just watched hoarders for the first time. I felt very connected to these people. I know I don't have the degree of a problem that they are struggling with, but I do have tendencies. It really
made me think about some of the things I do.
I am watching my diet, but when I see a sale on chocolate (Dove, or Kisses, or MIniatures), I will
buy several bags. I probably have 6 bags of Kisses stashed in my cupboard that I don't really want to eat, because they won't get me closer ... Mon, 11 Oct 2010 22:39:54 EST Fall I love fall. It seems like beginnings even
Tho it is the end of growing seasons.
Maybe from all those years of going
Back to school
I am poised for a new push on my
Challenges and weight loss.
I feel positive that it will be a

Productive season. Thu, 7 Oct 2010 21:42:17 EST Woolyworms The catepillars are on the move. Those brown and black ones that tell us how long winter
is supposed to last or how cold it is supposed to be.
For some reason, they like to cross the highway.
They just inch their way toward their destination without regard to how long it will take or
how dangerous it will be. If they knew what was coming, they might not even try. Some will
make it, some won't.
Like Sparkpeople. Some will make it. Some won't finish their j... Wed, 6 Oct 2010 12:45:18 EST Ok friends, I did it There's no quitting now. I just dropped off my clothes at the church rummage sale.
Everything that was a size too big had to go out of the closet. My Spark friends said
to go for it and I did. I know if I quit working out the first thing that happens is my hips will spread and I'll go up a pants size. I can't do that now because all those pants are gone so we only go forward from here. No back sliding. I WILL do it!
Let's go team!!
Tue, 5 Oct 2010 11:02:24 EST Losing the last pounds I really wanted to reach goal before my grandbaby comes in November, but I have piddled
around so much I am not going to make it. If I get serious now, I might be able to do it by my
birthday in January.

It is definitely harder to lose when you get down close to goal. It will take more determination.
I think I can I think I can I think I can....... Mon, 4 Oct 2010 14:33:41 EST Living and Losing Grrr. My blog disappeared. I will try again.

I have lost about 3 pounds since May. That is about a half pound a month. I am a member
of the Slowest Loser group, afterall.

I could be frustrated and disappointed, but I'm not. It could be much worse. I have
maintained, and even lost, through a summer that included vacations, my daughter's
wedding, weekends away, camping and S'mores, renovating most of the house (which
meant living in a mess, often w... Fri, 1 Oct 2010 11:28:10 EST 28 Day Bootcamp, anyone? I don't know if everyone but me had figured out the 28 day Sparkpeople bootcamp. But in case there is someone else who hasn't found it yet, let me share.
I was struggling with trying to figure out strength training routines. I would get one, do it over and over and over. I knew it was good to do various things and keep it mixed up, but it was hard for me to figure out what moves to do to mix it up. I had done Jillian 30 day shred, had several routines out of magazines, etc. I was lo... Wed, 29 Sep 2010 21:25:20 EST Hollywood I saw an article in Entertainment about Drew Carey, who has lost 70 pounds. He looks great.
I read the article to see what gimmick he was following, but guess what? He was eating healthier, smaller portions and exercising regularly. What a great plan!
It seems like so many people have always been looking for the quick fix, the pill or whatever
to make the fat melt away. But more and more are realizing it is just hard consistent work
to take care of our bodies and get a... Tue, 28 Sep 2010 11:01:38 EST Real Life Strength Training My last 2 weeks have involved moving pretty much every piece of furniture in my house, TWICE! Although I haven't done "strength training" I think I really have. Some of this stuff
has been HEAVY. Lots of squats and lifts and arm exercises. We finally finished recarpeting
(it was 20 years old, and needed replaced) and refinishing wood floors, and re-tiling the kitchen. Of course, my husband blamed me for all the work and mess, because if it was up
to him, we would never cha... Mon, 27 Sep 2010 08:50:51 EST Clothes that really FIT I am working through my closet and paring down to clothes that really fit.
I was down to only about 2 pair of pants, but was still wearing some of my old
favorites. By the end of the day they would bag down, etc.
I finally decided that wearing those loose clothes, although comfy, was not
good for me. To easy to overeat when you are wearing baggy clothes.
Also, after all this hard work, I want to show off my shape a little.
So I got a couple new pair of corde... Wed, 22 Sep 2010 13:00:48 EST No Junk Food week, completed, sort of Well, as a junk food junkie, I did pretty good. I managed to stay "clean " of junk
food for 5 days. Over the weekend, I weakened. Although, compared to my usual
week. all tolled, it came out not too bad.
The fact that I could even keep track was an improvement! I had 3 hershey kisses, one Lindt
dark chocolate truffle, one drumstick, and 2 chocolate chip cookies. If I counted all the
things that I RESISTED, the list would be much much longer. Oh, and about ... Tue, 21 Sep 2010 11:03:54 EST No Junk Food Week- Day 5 I'm breezing along pretty well with this but today there seem to be little fun-sized candy bars
everywhere I look. It is getting time that they start putting all the halloween candy out
in stores, and I think everyone brought a bag to work!
I have been drinking so much water, I am spending a lot of time in the bathroom. I
snacked on half my lunch this morning. I used to avoid bananas because I thought
they were too high in calories, but they are very filling. I got... Fri, 17 Sep 2010 14:48:29 EST No Junk Food- day 3 of 7 So I have made it through 2.5 days without any junk food.
I define junk food as calories that aren't justified by nutrirional
value. Although I initially excluded diet pop from this category,
(since there are no calories), I think I will remove that from my
diet for the rest of my one week commitment. Yesterday I felt
so bloated and full of gas, and I think that is probably a contributor.

Making a decision of NO JUNK FOOD actually makes it easier.
... Wed, 15 Sep 2010 12:37:29 EST For 1 week I give up.... This is a challenge on one of my teams. SO I was happy to join in and give up junk food for one week.
One week is a doable time period. I can't seem to give it up forever, but I think
I can make it a week. And I find when I am off of it a while, I don't crave it as much.
My weaknesses are cookies, bars, chocolate, cake, pie, brownies etc.
I try not to have it around at home, but once in a while I get an urge to bake....

I have a rubber band on my wrist to r... Tue, 14 Sep 2010 14:10:52 EST There's no place like home.... The last month has been busy for me. Weekends away, travel to football games, a week long vacation, followed by another 3 weeks later. It has all been fun and exciting. I have
gotten to spend time with friends, do lots of horseback riding, see some new places, go to a conference in a beautiful area, spend time with family. I am finally back home for a while.
I am really a homebody. I like routine. I eat better when I prepare my own food than when I
eat out a lot. My weig... Mon, 13 Sep 2010 13:35:49 EST Jane and her 3 legged Beagle I am pretty pleased with myself. I just jogged 4 miles, nonstop.

It was a gorgeous morning, finally cooler and less humid. I was feeling good. My dogs
were FULL of energy, jumping and chasing and playing. I have 2 dogs, a mostly lab mutt,
and a 3 legged beagle. We did a 5 minute walk to warm up, then started to jog.

Before I started jogging I would watch people running and notice that a lot of older adults
(me now) would jog with a very short stride, ... Thu, 26 Aug 2010 11:34:39 EST Scary New Pants Today I wore a new pair of pants. They fit perfectly. No stretched out or puckered areas,
nice smooth lines, not too tight in the waist so there is no muffin top. They look perfect.

They scare me.

They fit so well there is no room for indescretion. If I lay off my jogging my hips will be
too wide to wear them. If I overeat, my tummy will puff up and they will be too short.
Most of my things are a little loose, so I feel secure that I won't outgrow th... Tue, 24 Aug 2010 13:19:12 EST Skipping meals doesn't equal weight loss I have found I really need to plan my diet. The last couple days I have been
really busy with projects that have taken me through meal time. Then I find
myself starving a couple hours after missing a meal and grab a snack, which
is generally not as nutritious, and usually higher in fat and sugar, than my
meal would have been. I also find it less satisfying. I think I can sit down to
a 350 calorie balanced meal and be satisfied until the next meal time. But a <B... Sun, 22 Aug 2010 18:29:53 EST Weigh In and Family Photos Today was spirit team weigh in. My personal weigh in day is Thursday, so it is good to have
2 days to keep me accountable. I am down to the last 15 pounds to lose, and it is coming off
harder now. Yesterday I made some poor choices- sorry team. But I will give myself credit for
the good things I did, too. I had a good week of exercise, and really rocked the fruits and veges.
Yesterday was really my only junk food day, and I am back on track this am.
I spent la... Sat, 21 Aug 2010 09:40:42 EST knew?? I saw in a magazine I got this week a cute vest that was on
I haven't thought about looking for clothes there, but I was surprised at some
cute things that I saw. A lot of the stuff is online only. I ordered a vest and
a cute dress ($22 for the dress!).
They came yesterday and were really cute. The dress is knit and fits great.
The vest is a houndstooth plaid in black and white and will be fun to wear.
Sometimes it is fun to have something you c... Sat, 21 Aug 2010 00:34:35 EST Salsa time Today I have all sorts of plans. One of those includes making Salsa! I love this
time of year. Of course I make a mess in the kitchen, but the smells are wonderful
and it leaves me with jars and jars of fresh garden produce to get me through the winter.
I'd better get to it! Thu, 19 Aug 2010 12:04:12 EST Jillian kicks my butt, again I have really been working out well this year. I completed the 30 day shred and moved on to weight lifting, bikinig, jogging. I've improved my aerobic fitness. I'm feeling strong.
Last night our treadmill was out of commision due to some changes we are making. I couldn't go outside and workout because I was on call and had to be near the phone and available. I had done the stationary bike the night before, and didn't feel like lifting weights.
I finally decided to dust Jillian... Wed, 18 Aug 2010 12:55:03 EST Bloodwork results are in I found out today that since I have lost weight, I need less thyroid medicine.
I have to cut back my dose, which will probably slow my weight loss (but maybe
not). A good thing to need less med, though.
I also got my lipid panel done. My cholesterol was great at 159. I was afraid that
my HDL would be really low now(it tends to drop when you go through menopause
and lose the estrogen effect). It looks like my working out has been able
to offset that, and mai... Tue, 17 Aug 2010 13:02:01 EST
